Christmas in Birmingham – all the festive fun across the city

WINTER 2022 1 colmorebusinessdistrict.com

Welcome

to the Winter 2022 edition of Colmore Life. We had so much lovely feedback after our first ever Christmas in Cathedral Square in 2021 we simply had to bring it back for 2022. The gift and craft stalls, the food and drink, the live music, the children’s helter skelter and the Pigeon in the Park pop-up pub were all such colourful attractions, I’m delighted to say they will be returning this year, between Wednesday 16 November – Sunday 18 December 2022 This winter edition of Colmore Life magazine features the full list of Christmas in Cathedral Square market vendors, along with a whole host of other things to do in Birmingham this Christmas over six festive pages, starting on Page 4. The Business District welcomes a wonderful new arrival to its booming food and drink offer with the arrival of Orelle at 103 Colmore Row, offering spectacular views across Birmingham. Our roving reporter Catherine was blown away by the skyscraping setting when she visited to interview staff for this edition of the magazine. Staying at 103 Colmore Row, we look at the Equinox artwork that hangs above the entrance to the building and tell the poignant story behind its creation. It’s a touching story that sheds new light on a wonderful sculpture. Art, culture and local history are the topics of our interview with Sara Wajid, co-CEO of Birmingham Museums, who talks about hers and Zak Mensah’s mission to make the city’s museums representative of modern-day Birmingham. It’s a fascinating interview that connects Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to the Business District in many ways. Thanks so much for picking up this copy of Colmore Life. I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to raising a glass with you during the festive period. MICHELE WILBY, CEO, COLMORE BID

WINTER 2022

the festive comedy has been seen by more than one million people during its acclaimed UK tour and three successful London runs. Catch it in the city from November 19 through to early January.

There’s artisan food and drink, handmade crafts and the regular Farmers Market stalls too. On November 12 the event runs from 12pm-6.30pm and is combined with the Christmas Lights Switch on; and it’s back on December 10 from 10am4pm.

THE POLAR EXPRESS AT MOOR STREET STATION

All aboard! Immerse yourselves in the sights and sounds of this classic children’s tale as Vintage Trains brings The Polar Express to life. There’s a theatrical re-enactment of the classic film as passengers are transported via heritage carriages to the North Pole

THE FRANKFURT CHRISTMAS MARKET

As festive as an Elves’ workshop, Birmingham’s giant Christmas Market is the largest outside of Germany or Austria. There’s a huge selection of traditional gifts and an even larger selection of food and drink. Pretzels, schnitzels and bratwursts? No problem. Gluhwein, Weissbeer or tasty hot chocolate? Fill your boots. This year, the market runs from November 3 to December 23 and is open daily from 10am-9pm.

There’s a SYMPHONY HALL glittering grotto where Santa and his elves will hear what’s on your Christmas wish list and visitors can get up close to more than 2,000 creatures including sharks, gentoo penguins and the UK’s only sea otters, Ozzy and Ola. The grotto is open from November 20 to December 24. Usual admission fees apply plus an additional charge of £5 per child to see Santa in his grotto.

The city’s world renowned CBSO will be joined by top West End vocalists to belt out the hit songs of Christmases gone by. On stage on December 21, they’ll perform everything from Frosty the Snowman and Jingle Bells to White Christmas and It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

The Big Interview

‘My job is to make sure that the full spectrum of Brummies feel represented in their museum’ COLMORE LIFE CATCHES UP WITH SARA WAJID, JOINT CEO OF BIRMINGHAM MUSEUMS TRUST, TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HER AMBITIOUS VISION FOR THE CITY’S MUSEUMS Interview: Helen Stallard

“Forgive my lateness, I’m currently marching across town!” So starts my chat with Sara Wajid, the Joint-CEO of Birmingham Museums Trust, who – alongside job-share Zak Mensah – took over the top job at England’s largest civic museum service in 2021. Still only 18 months into their role, the duo have faced lockdowns and the ongoing impact of Covid on audiences, vast essential building works at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and the huge influx of visitors during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Sara’s in-box must be enormous, but

she does not seem remotely fazed by the job she’s taken on. Where does her energy come from? “Well, Zak and I applied for the CEO role at Birmingham Museums Trust on condition that it would be as a job share. Our reasons were many, but top of the list was to share the sheer graft that comes from running a large organisation: two sets of shoulders can take more weight than one. Zak has a commercial background, whilst my interests lie in engagement and curation, so our skills are complementary. We are certain that this joint, flexible approach leads to

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery’s famous Round Room gallery was transformed for the We Are Birmingham: Our City display

10

WINTER 2022

better leadership. More than this, it sets the tone for an organisational culture that is open, equitable and reflective of the city it serves.” That’s the key point of Sara and Zak’s leadership: they are determined to make Birmingham Museums Trust’s many venues more reflective of Birmingham, and of the lives of Brummies. During Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery’s brief re-opening for Birmingham 2022 this summer, a new form of exhibition was trialled, one that told the social history of the city. Blacklash, curated by Birminghambased artist Mukhtar Dar, looked at the city’s anti-racist movement in the 1980s and 1990s, whilst Wonderland – produced with Flatpack Projects – told the story of Birmingham’s rich history of cinema. In The Que was a loving homage to The Que Club, with personal momentoes from many a youthful lost weekend. I wonder how these exhibitions went down with audiences? “The response to our new style of exhibition was overwhelmingly positive. We drew in a younger crowd than normal, and in particular younger adults in their twenties and thirties, who fed back to us that the displays spoke to them strongly. My job is to make sure that the full spectrum of Brummies feel represented in their museum, and these displays, full of rich lived social history, really resonated with people on an emotional level.”

Lowdown

Does this mean that Birmingham Museums Trust will turn away from more traditional shows of fine art now, I wonder? “Oh no, not a bit of it. The big hitters, the Pre-Raphealites and the Staffordshire Hoard – they will always be at the core of our offer. Birmingham is rightly famous for its world-class art collection and we will never shy away from that. Our job over the next year or so is to plan the nuts and bolts of how we place the local, real-life stories of Brummies alongside this wider, global history.” Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery closes again in November as the essential works on this Victorian edifice continue. “The roof needs urgent attention, and we’re also going to fix all those annoying problems like the broken lifts.” Until BMAG re-opens in 2024, how can visitors to the city-centre get their culture fix?

“Well as our experiences during Birmingham 2022 showed us, the refigured spaces around Paradise and into Victoria Square are perfect showcases for art and culture. Whilst we’re closed I hope to offer more work outside than previously; there is so much potential for street art and events in the city centre.” What of the business and retail community in the BID – what are Sara and Zak’s hopes for their nearneighbours? “I see the potential for a much deeper connection between Birmingham Museums Trust and the business and retail community in the city-centre. It’s all about collaboration now. “There is so much expertise within each sector, and if we come together, we will all benefit from our lateral thinking. For example, Birmingham Museums Trust is currently working with Bruntwood for some visioning

days, which is brilliant for me as an arts leader – working with people in a different sector helps me think about things in an entirely different way. “I see more of this kind of thing in the future, a coming together of different worlds, to make new and exciting things happen. Placemaking, being part of the cultural life of the city, these are vitally important attributes now for forward-thinking commercial organisations. “Birmingham Museums Trust is more than a collection of buildings and objects. Our role is not only that of a guardian of a world-class collection, but of an active contributor to social change; forging links between past, present and future in ways that inspire creativity, hope and trust. It’s an exciting time to be leading this brilliant organisation.” Visit birminghammuseums.org.uk for latest information about the Trust’s historic properties across the city

RSM, which employs more than 300 people in Birmingham, has signed a ten-year lease at the 26-storey block. The firm said the relocation from St Philips Point would help it facilitate collaborative and flexible working while also creating an improved environment for staff and clients. Regional managing partner Mark Taylor said: “103 Colmore Row gives us plenty of scope for growth over the next few years.”

COLLIERS Colliers has become the tenth office occupier

to sign up at 103 Colmore Row. The commercial real estate firm has agreed a ten-year lease on 9,200 sq ft on the 19th floor of the building. Colliers provides commercial real estate agency and advisory services to businesses across the UK and has 13 offices across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. The 125-strong Birmingham office has 15 service lines operating across the Midlands and will relocate from 11 Brindleyplace in November. James Cubitt, head of Colliers Birmingham, said: “103 Colmore Row is a game-changing building for Birmingham. Our office agency team is joint agent for 103 Colmore Row, so we are familiar with the building and knew that we had to act quickly if we wanted to secure a spot. LIQUID MEDIA CENTRE

FACEPUNCH STUDIOS

Colmore Business District is now home to its first TV channel after the launch of Birmingham Business Television at Liquid Media Centre on Waterloo Street. BBTV is a monthly magazine-style show of approximately two hours in length which is streamed on the second Thursday of each month. It comprises a mixed programme of news, interviews, panel discussions, commentary and analysis. The channel was launched in September by the team behind Birmingham Business magazine, the B2B glossy which has been running since 2018. BBTV editor Henry Carpenter said: “The purpose of BBTV is twofold. The first is to shine a light on some of the exciting things happening across the region’s business spectrum, “The other is to explore key issues of the day with the help of some of the most authoritative figures in their field.” For further information email info@bbtv.live or visit bbtv.live

GOLDMAN SACHS Goldman Sachs has reached a long-term lease agreement for a 110,000 sq ft permanent office space at One Centenary Way. The new office space comprises five floors of the building, including a roof terrace overlooking Centenary Square. The office will have space for a headcount of several hundred, with optionality to accommodate more than 1,000 people in future years if required. Due for completion in early 2023, One Centenary Way is part of MEPC’s £1.2 billion Paradise Birmingham development. It will be one of Birmingham’s most sustainable buildings with a pure electric heating and hot water supply system and cutting-edge technology, services and amenities. Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “When a global employer of the stature of Goldman Sachs first established their presence here in the West Midlands, that decision represented a real vote of confidence in our region’s local talent, infrastructure and economic prospects. “I’m so pleased that Goldman have now invested in this world-class office space in the very heart of Birmingham city centre and

Video game developer and publisher Facepunch Studios Ltd has taken a floor at 103 Colmore Row. The company has signed a ten-year lease on the eighth floor (12,132 sq ft) of the 26-storey office tower, becoming the first non-professional and financial services firm to relocate there. Facepunch was founded in 2004 by Garry Newman and is currently based in Walsall. The company is best known for its popular multiplayer survival game ‘Rust’, which has sold almost 14 million copies to date. Other titles include Garry’s Mod, Chippy and Sandbox. In total, Facepunch has sold more than 38 million games worldwide.

wish them all the best in the coming weeks, months and years. They were an early leader in seeing the potential we have to offer and I’m sure many more companies will follow in their footsteps.” Since opening its first office in Birmingham in September 2021 Goldman Sachs has filled nearly 250 new positions in the city, across functions including Engineering, Human Capital Management, Legal, Audit and Corporate and Workplace Solutions. The firm expects to hire several hundred more employees in the years ahead, predominantly from the region. In their first year, teams based in Birmingham have already been leading on global projects and innovations for the firm, making significant commercial contributions. Gurjit Jagpal, Managing Director and Head of the Birmingham Office at Goldman Sachs, said: “The quality, depth and breadth of Birmingham’s talent pool has exceeded expectations in our first year in the city. This new office space will be perfectly suited to our collaboration, flexibility and growth requirements in the years ahead. We are excited to cement and grow our position as an important employer and member of the business community in the city and the region.”

Fit-out specialists Rhino Interiors are the latest business to move to 103 Colmore Row. The commercial design, build and industrial fit-out experts will move 35 staff onto floor three of the building. Managing Director of Rhino, Ben Wheatcroft, said: “Our move will accommodate not only our future expansion, but will also support one of our core values which is all about keeping the Rhino team connected and enabling them to work productively and efficiently.”

MERCIA REAL ESTATE Edmund Street-based property and development investor, Mercia Real Estate (MRE) has appointed Alan Green as Development Director. Equinox: A fitting tribute to brilliant artist John Pickering

COLMORE ROW WORKERS AND ORELLE RESTAURANT DINERS CAN NOW SEE A STRIKING PIECE OF ART RIGHT ABOVE THEM By Catherine Hendrick

16

It’s not just the fact that 103 Colmore Row is Birmingham’s tallest office building that makes it stand-out from the crowd. It’s also home to a stunning piece of public art which has turned out to be the final work of a celebrated Midlands artist. The striking large-scale sculpture by John Pickering, which hangs proudly in the four-storey colonnade at the entrance to 103 Colmore Row, is called Equinox. The arresting design was inspired by the twice yearly equivalence between night and day. The sculptor wanted to create a symbol of the key moment in nature which he saw as a mark of harmony and a reconciliation of opposites. Pickering was approached in 2016 with the idea of creating a large-

WINTER 2022

scale sculpture for the Grade A office building by the architects for 103 Colmore Row, Doone Silver Kerr. No-one realised it would be the Wolverhampton-born artist’s final commission. Pickering’s dream was to see his work produced on a large scale. He began working on the concept for Equinox with his friend and collaborator, George L Legendre and Doone Silver Kerr in 2016 but sadly died during the prototyping. Legendre, Doone Silver Kerr and 103 Colmore Row’s joint developers, Sterling Property Ventures and Tristan Capital Partners, pledged to see the project through in Pickering’s honour. The sculpture, which is suspended nine metres above the ground, weighs 1.5 tonnes and is seven metres from tip-to-tip – which is the

John Pickering

Public Art height of a two-storey house. It’s made from steel tubes and laser cut metal sheets and was manufactured by specialist fabricators, Structural Stairways, in Dudley. It took three days to install at the new 103 Colmore Row tower, which was previously a banking hall and offices for NatWest and whose tenants now include Gallagher, Grant Thornton and Knight Frank. The project is a fitting tribute to an artist who spent much of his life creating his extraordinary work in relative obscurity. Pickering, who was born in Wolverhampton in 1934, studied classical sculpture and life drawing at Bilston and Birmingham School of Art before beginning work as a stone carver. His talent led to him working on projects at St Philip’s Cathedral and the 15th Century Collegiate Church of St Mary in Warwick. He was inspired to start using geometry and mathematical science in his work after reading a book called ‘Geometry and The Imagination.’ Pickering became fascinated by a mathematical principle dating back to the late Georgian times known as Inversion. The result was a series of extraordinary artworks which led to collaborations with the likes of world renowned architectural practice Foster + Partners and his partnership and friendship with architect George Legendre, who shared Pickering’s interest in mathematics. To celebrate Pickering’s life and work 103 Colmore Row is hosting a special exhibition of his work. ‘Equinox & Other Works: The Art of John Pickering’ features 14 of the artist’s sculptures created between 1970 and 2016. The exhibition has been curated in partnership with Pickering’s family and friends and people he worked with over the years, along with the John Pickering Foundation. A special event was held at 103 Colmore Row in June to open the exhibition, which was attended by members of the artist’s family. John Pickering’s twin brother, Arthur,

said his brother was “always an artist” who performed thousands of calculations to make each one of his sculptures. He added: “I am extremely grateful to Sterling Property Ventures and Tristan Capital Partners for providing the space at 103 Colmore Row for the exhibition and enabling John’s work to be more widely seen and appreciated.

“Visitors will, I am sure, experience a new exhilaration about what art means when they explore the variety and intricate complexity of these uniquely beautiful and timeless constructions.” James Howarth, the Managing Director of Sterling Property Ventures, said: “Equinox is a lasting reminder of John and his amazing work, which we’re extremely proud and privileged to have at 103 Colmore Row. “During his life John produced several sculptures, each as unique and intriguing as Equinox, so when the opportunity to display them at 103 Colmore Row arose we felt it only fitting. “His mathematical and artistic genius has given us an amazing piece of public art for the building and the city and in some small way we wanted to return the favour by putting on this exhibition and giving the public a rare opportunity to view his work.”

The sky’s the limit for District’s stunning new Orelle restaurant COLMORE LIFE’S CATHERINE HENDRICK CAN’T HELP BUT BE WOWED BY CITY NEWCOMER I was hoping to appear cool, calm and sophisticated when I arrived at Orelle – the elegant new restaurant in the sky at the heart of Colmore Business District. Instead, I had to stop myself from shouting ‘wow’ at the kind of volume which might have resulted in one of its cocktail glasses being dropped. Because the views from the 24th floor of Birmingham’s tallest office building, 103 Colmore Row, are extraordinary. The double-height floor to ceiling windows offer a 360 degree panoramic vista over the city and beyond. Landmarks like the BT Tower and Old Joe, the world’s tallest freestanding clock tower at the University of Birmingham, look toy-like at this height. Head Bar Manager Tiago Bastos describes the ever-changing panorama as ‘magical’ adding: “The views change all the time, depending on the weather and the time of day.

18

WINTER 2022

“You might come to Orelle one day and the next time it will be completely different. “My favourite time is around sunset when the sky changes colour and the lights of the city start to come on.” Orelle, which opened its doors in October, consists of a modern French restaurant with a cocktail bar on the 24th floor of 103 Colmore Row and an all-day cafe and terrace on the ground floor. The 3,767 sq ft venue, which also has a private dining room for up to 12 guests, is hospitality group D&D London’s first venture in the region. Its portfolio includes more than 45 restaurants, bars and a hotel in London, Manchester, Leeds, Paris and New York. Chairman and CEO Des Gunewardena says: “Birmingham is known for its incredible food and drink scene, which we can’t wait to be a part of. “This project has been in the works for several years, so to be able to announce our official opening date was an incredibly exciting milestone. “We truly hope that Orelle will become a jewel in Birmingham.” The man behind the menu is Executive Chef Chris Emery, who learnt his craft under the renowned Michel Roux at the three Michelinstarred The Waterside Inn in Bray. He’s also worked at Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social in London. Chris’s menu offers a contemporary take on classic French recipes, which also showcases the best of British ingredients and the stories behind them. Dishes include the ‘Truite’ starter,

featuring blackberry cured trout with fennel, green apple and preserved lemon and the ‘En Croute’ sharer – a venison and chicken ‘Wellington’ with beetroot, potato puree and cocoa nib jus. “I’ve worked with so many inspirational chefs and learnt something from each one,” Chris says. “Working with Michel Roux means a French influence is almost in your blood. “I like to put my own spin on things and the menu at Orelle will also celebrate the best ingredients we can source here in the UK. “The food scene in Birmingham is really up and coming and we want to be part of that.” One of Chris’s favourite dishes is Agneau, which uses Herdwick lamb from the Lake District. “It’s a heritage breed which was almost lost during foot and mouth. One farmer pretty much saved it. “It tastes like lamb but the best lamb you will ever eat,” he smiles. “It’s a beautiful and tender piece of meat. “I think it’s really important to highlight how special it is. So I’ve paired it with very delicate flavours like Savoy cabbage, celeriac purée and pommes Anna. It’s a simple dish which is all about the provenance of the animal.” Orelle’s small but beautifully designed bar offers classic and innovative cocktails, inspired by the French menu, as well as a collection of champagnes, wines, beers and spirits, some produced locally. With intriguing names like ‘Faultless Martini’ and ‘Dark ‘n’ Stormy’ each has been carefully created by Orelle’s

Head Bar Manager Tiago Bastos and his team. Tiago, who previously worked at The Grand Hotel and The Edgbaston Boutique Hotel, is known for his unique creations and for adding a touch of theatre to dining experiences. So don’t be surprised to find a smoke-filled dome accompanying your cocktail to the table. Or the Japanese seasoning Miso, more usually found in soup, used in the Banana Parfait cocktail to add an umami flavour. “I try to play with the senses and create something unique which you won’t find anywhere else,” Tiago says. “It’s about the experience and the service and making guests feel special.” The glamour of the 88-cover restaurant’s sky-high setting is complimented by interiors which pay tribute to its banking heritage. The site was initially the home of National Westminster House.

The original cast aluminium banking hall doors, with their distinctive triangular pattern based on NatWest’s identity, have been saved and installed on the walls of the lobby. Look closely and you can see a key hole which would have protected the savings of generations of city families. Orelle’s design, which features finely detailed golden metalwork and richly veined marble floors, also draws inspiration from the nearby Jewellery Quarter. A hand-painted mural based on an uncut gemstone by local artist Anita Roye, whose father worked in the Jewellery Quarter, adorns the restaurant wall. Thanks to the restaurant’s sky-high setting, cosmopolitan menu and glamorous interiors it could be easy to imagine you’re somewhere like New York. Orelle certainly brings a flavour of the Big Apple to the heart to the Business District. For more information and to book a table visit orelle.co.uk

Homelessness takes centre stage in Snow Hill Square

ROBB SHEPPARD OF SIFA FIRESIDE REFLECTS ON A THOUGHT-PROVOKING PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION IN THE HEART OF THE BUSINESS DISTRICT In September and October, Snow Hill Square and station was home to a socially engaged exhibition which stopped Birmingham’s commuters in their tracks. CONSTRUCT gave people that are homeless, or have experience of being homeless, the ability to present themselves as they wanted to be seen. Twenty-one assisted self-portraits were mounted across scaffolding structures, showing individuals in settings that have a special, sentimental meaning to them. The resulting assisted self-portraits were stunning and in stark contrast to the stereotypical images that often accompany homelessness and the installation included individuals, rather than excluding them. The

24

WINTER 2022

project was developed in partnership with Colmore BID alongside Grain Projects, who specialise in contemporary photography and community engagement. Nicola Shipley, Director of GRAIN Projects, told Colmore Life: “Five years ago we reached out to Birmingham’s homelessness support service, SIFA Fireside, to develop a project that engaged with people experiencing homelessness and that would help promote the main issues confronting people. We commissioned renowned artist Anthony Luvera to lead the project. The exhibition in Snow Hill Square was of a scale and design that caught everyone’s attention and was a fitting culmination to such a significant project.

Artist Anthony Luvera

“We would like to thank Colmore BID for partnering with us on the realisation of the exhibition.” On CONSTRUCT, Anthony Luvera

Art in the District

said: “I was delighted by the way the exhibition came together. When I designed the installation using scaffolding and netting on which to present the photographs, I wanted the public to pay attention to aspects of the city that are often overlooked and taken for granted, in the same way that people who are homeless are often misunderstood and overlooked themselves.” The individuals were all clients of SIFA Fireside and worked with Luvera over a four-year period to become more skilled as photographers. Many of the participants were proud to be in attendance at the launch event in

Snow Hill Square. On the evening of the exhibition launch, a beaming Mauvette Reynolds exclaimed to the audience; “I never thought I’d see a picture of myself like this and look... I’ve done it!” When asked about the location of the installation, Luvera said: “I’m always keen to put exhibitions in the public realm so that they can reach a wider cross section of society, rather than just those who would usually go into a gallery. It’s a powerful way to prompt conversations with those who wouldn’t usually engage with an issue such as homelessness.” There’s now an open space where the scaffolding used to stand. Although the exhibition

has gone, the people who took part in the project are not. CONSTRUCT prompted the citizens of Birmingham to stop and take a look at the homeless people around them, as well as the housing issues within the city that belongs to us all. If you want to help SIFA Fireside to continue supporting homeless and vulnerably housed adults in Birmingham, you can donate using the QR code to the right. on the train as quickly as possible. I’ve also launched an independent gift box company called From BRUM with LOVE, which sells gift boxes filled with products from some of the finest independent creators, brewers and roasters in Birmingham. The local independents we’re working with include Quarter Horse Coffee Roasters, Oh So Soap and Birmingham Stationery Co. Customers can choose from gift box themes like ‘Send Thanks in a Box’, ‘The Curry Lover’ and the ‘New Baby Box.’ We want to promote our amazing city and the amazing independent businesses all around us by curating gift boxes that are beautiful, tasty and indulgent and packed with awesome products. I’m currently putting together a ‘corporate’ gift box aimed at Birmingham based businesses who could use us for their Christmas gifting for staff and clients. The items are wrapped in Birmingham-themed tissue paper and each box comes with a handwritten notelet inside.

WHAT PUSHED YOU TO LAUNCH THE BUSINESS? I think it was a reaction to

the amount of homelessness around the city. It dawned on me that I would like to become an employer, to offer the opportunity of work to those who face so many barriers to employment. So that rather than give a homeless person a fiver (I never have any cash!) or buy them a meal deal - imagine if I could say to the person holding a ‘will work for food’ sign at a busy crossroads, “Hey, I can give you a job!” Wouldn’t that be incredible? So I’ve started a gift box business that champions independent creators in the fantastic city of Birmingham, and will hopefully soon, be able to offer work to those struggling to get into employment.

Community News A DAY IN THE LIFE JOHN-JO VON JOHNSON Job title: Street Operations Manager Company: Colmore BID

My role is to line-manage the security team, ambassador service and the BID’s street cleaner and work closely with local partners in the city centre such as Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Police, support organisations such as SIFA Fireside, Trident, St Basils and all the other city centre BIDs. We have fortnightly briefings with West Midland Police regarding anti-social behaviour and regular offenders in the city centre. This helps us to work more closely with other security teams in the District. We

also host a weekly pop-up engagement tent to speak to the public and businesses in the District. We also arrange weekly patrols with Birmingham City Council’s anti-social behaviour team. This gives us the opportunity to escalate matters around the District to relevant departments in the Council on behalf of our businesses. Our work with neighbouring BIDs and partner organisations is critical for information sharing, arranging joint patrols and helping to promote the support they provide. I am also the Vice Chair of the City Centre Local Partnership Delivery Group. The group brings partners together to co-ordinate responses to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and community tensions in the area. It’s made up of local authority partners and key stakeholders in the city centre. The best part of my role is helping vulnerable individuals who the security team meet across the District. We pride ourselves on offering support to whoever needs it and we make sure we connect them with the right support services. I also enjoy speaking to the businesses about how Colmore Security can assist with security issues or offer advice. It’s great knowing that the businesses feel that extra layer of safety when they see the team patrolling. Lastly, I really enjoy the varied project work such as introducing Bleed Kits to the District, working on the contactless giving scheme we’re about to launch, mapping out defibrillators in the District, working with SIFA Fireside to encourage volunteering and personal safety sessions for our businesses.
