Prep Under Way for 2020 Census

San Luis Obispo County District Supervisors, Debbie Arnold and John Peschong, said the County received $100,000 of the state’s $25 million allocated funds for the Census Outreach Project. The data collected by the decennial census determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used to distribute billions of federal dollars to state and local governments, according to the San Luis Obispo County Census Outreach Project. A large part of the planning process involves reaching hardto-count demographics and educating the public on why the numbers are important. In the 2010 Census, one of the least

NORTH COUNTY — Although the 2020 Census does not begin until April 1, local preparations are under way to make sure everyone is counted. This year the federal government took a huge step into bringing the census process into the new millennium by adding digital tools to its repertoire. The public can go online to fill out the questionnaire or call in and talk to a live person on the phone. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s 2020 Census Operational Plan, 45 percent of the populace that receives notification by mail is expected to respond online.

hen Atascadero resident Donn Clickard heard about his nomination as the California School Board Association Board Member of the Year for 2019, his first thought was, “you’re crazy.” The award was the first of its kind, representing the best of California school boards. Clickard’s tendency toward DONN CLICKARD collaboration meant he shared credit for his accomplishments — an award meant taking credit for things he didn’t do alone. On Thursday, Clickard stood on stage at the San Diego Convention Center with fellow Atascadero Unified School District trustees — as well by superintendent Tom Butler, and assistant superintendents E.J. Rossi and Jackie Martin. He received the Golden Gavel in front of thousands of attendees with a wall-to-wall video screen backdrop. Back home on Sunday, rain gently falling outside and his golden retriever Gabriel keeping him company, Clickard celebrated another victory. He just watched his 49ers beat the New Orleans Saints, 48-46, with a game-winning field goal on a 32-inch television tucked tightly inside a wooden entertainment center. Sitting comfortably in his well-worn brown La-ZBoy, in jeans and an orange AHS football hoodie, he was enjoying a few wins for his favorite teams. Atascadero News caught up with Clickard about his induction as the first name in the CSBA Golden Gavel Hall of Fame, and receiving the lifetime achievement award. Receiving the Golden Gavel “When Tami [Gunther] came to me about nominating me for this first-ever Trustee of the Year Golden Gavel award, I told her she was crazy,” Clickard said.” I am a school board member who works hard for our kids — we all do that — we have seven really neat people. Each one has their strengths, and there is not one better than another. When she rights this nomination, and you look at all these things we have done ... ‘Clickard did CONTINUED ON PAGE A10

Fall in Love with ‘Love Letters’ and Help Fund the Arts

Wine Country Theatre presents a dinner theatre Feb. 13-15 STAFF REPORT

PASO ROBLES — “Love Letters,” a gentle, funny romantic play tells the story of two people that spans decades, from their first meeting in second grade into late adulthood. Written by A. R. Gurney, the unique play will be a dinner theatre production of Wine Country Theatre on Friday, Feb. 13, and runs through Feb. 15 at the Park Ballroom, 1232 Park St. in downtown Paso Robles. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Wine Country Theatre will present the two-character play along with an outstanding dinner prepared by Andre, Master Chef of Paso Terra Restaurant. Guests can enjoy a three-course meal and a complimentary glass of wine or champagne. More

wine and champagne will be available to purchase throughout the performance. “Love Letters” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, and has been performed throughout the world. “We are excited to bring something a little bit different to our stage,” says Laurie Zenobio, President of the Wine Country Theatre Board of Directors. “It is theatre at its most simple, yet highly moving and impactful. The story is told through letters, notes and cards exchanged over a lifetime between two people. The set is simple: only two chairs and desks, and the actors, although highly rehearsed, will read the letters aloud. This creates an intimate dynamic between the characters and the audience.” Performed by Casey Biggs and Cynthia Anthony, the play follows the relationship between a stuffy lawyer and a free-spirited woman. Both characters were born to wealth

and position and are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through boarding school and college, their marriages, careers, a divorce, and even an affair. Through their correspondence they discuss their hopes and ambitions, as well as the dreams and disappointments that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. According to one reviewer, “The most poignant element of the piece is the story between the lines, the words they cannot bring themselves to write.” Biggs, who plays Andy, is also known as the Paso Robles Wine Man. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City. He has been a professional actor for the past 40 years. As an actor, director, writer, and producer his work has been seen throughout the US and in Europe. He was a mem-

ber and lead actor of the famed Arena Stage Company for 10 years and early in his career he toured the country with John Housman’s The Acting Company. An award-winning director, he has staged over 30 productions from Shakespeare to Mamet. He has produced stage, film and television projects over the past 15 years. With Dina Mande, he collaborated on the award-winning “Paso Wine Man” series promoting the Central Coast wine industry. As an actor he has appeared in over 80 film and television productions with a highlight being five seasons as the leader of the Cardassian Empire in Star Trek “Deep Space Nine.” Most recently he wrote and starred in “Heart of Paradise.” It was directed by Mande. His last two films have been, “Half Brother” and “Sweet Parents.” Anthony, portraying the character of Melissa, is founder and Executive Director of Wine Country Theatre. She is an actress, director and Theatre

Educator. Cynthia was most recently seen in “Over the River and Through the Woods,” and directed “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” both for Wine Country Theatre. “Love Letters” is a fundraiser for Wine Country Theatre, to support their ongoing commitment to provide the

community with professional caliber productions. Tickets for the dinner theatre events are $85, which includes a complimentary glass of wine or champagne. Tickets for the show-only matinee are $25. For menu options, tickets and more information, go to the website WineCountryTheatre.com.

California (Mostly) Keeps Its Retirement Appeal

THOMAS ELIAS COMMENTARY

A

ll those folks who have been saying for years that California housing and taxes are too expensive for most Americans to move here, take note: The newest survey of Americans aged 45 or more, those who can be expected to retire in the next two decades, show the Golden State has lost little of its retirement allure. To be sure, California ranks only fifth among the 48 continental states as a desired retirement destination, but it’s well ahead of Texas, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, to name just a few

of the popular destinations for Californians cashing out their high-value homes and moving. The only states ahead of California as desired retirement destinations are Florida, Arizona, Tennessee and South Carolina, with Tennessee the only surprise on the list. Florida, the clear leader as the preferred final home for 24 percent of those surveyed, has far more retirement communities and other facilities catering specifically to seniors than California. The allure of the other three states plainly is their lower housing prices. This becomes clear from a look at the savings and other assets held by a stratified random sample of 1,068 Americans over 45 sampled by the New York-based real estate data firm PropertyShark.com. The firm, using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk tool, found that three of every five persons in that age category possess less than $100,000 in savings and just 4 percent had more than $1 million available for

use in retirement, covering real estate and other expenses. It’s tough to contemplate buying California property with that kind of asset base. So, most likely, California isn’t in the top two in retirement desirability because most nearor middle-term retirees can’t buy into this state’s market. More than one-third of the study’s respondents also said they had experienced some difficulty meeting housing-related expenses in the last year. And yet, the study shows a significant 56 percent majority of middle-aged and older Americans want to stay put for the rest of their lives. Aging in place, said PropertyShark, remains the gold standard. That bodes well for California, the state providing the single largest share of respondents. It means most older Californians do not now plan to cash out and leave, despite the siren call of far lower living expenses in nearby states like Arizona, Nevada and Idaho.

Still, many seniors who would like to stay put have felt a pinch. Among those with yearly incomes between $20,000 and $40,000, fully 42 percent reported struggling with housing costs. There was no breakout for California, but this state’s higher costs probably mean even more seniors had difficulty here. This was one reason onethird of those surveyed said they’d consider sharing a home like the women in the constantly rerunning Golden Girls TV comedy. About 40 percent of those 45 or over would consider sharing space with younger housemates, with 35 percent preferring to share with folks about their own age. The better-vetted a potential houseguest is and the more of a financial contribution that person might make, the more popular the idea becomes. Simply helping with chores would not do it in most cases, while being a family member would increase the chance of acceptance for younger housemates.

Policy makers need to consider these kinds of findings significantly as they plan neighborhoods or begin to make the kind of densifying housing changes now being pushed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and some state legislators. Most Americans in the over-45 category, the survey found, currently do not live in neighborhoods they consider senior-friendly. But with Baby Boomers aged 52 to 74 now controlling about 70 percent of all disposable income and 60 percent of those aged 65 or over living mortgage-free, more and more development will have to cater to them if it’s to be profitable. It adds up to a picture where California is a favored place, just as it long has been. These facts appear to contradict the pessimists about California that former Gov. Jerry Brown used to call “declinists.” At the same time, PropertyShark makes it clear life is not entirely simple for most of the soon-to-be elderly in California or anywhere else.

Tips for Surviving the Holiday Season By DAN RICH FOR THE ATASCADERO NEWS

I

am not suggesting that these tips are new, or things that you don’t already know, but rather a list, basically reminders, of coping approaches to apply during the holiday season. I am not suggesting that one be a Scrooge or that there are not many positive aspects of the holiday season. This is typically a time of celebration with family and friends. Perhaps a time to enjoy parties, to get together, maybe a time to enjoy musical events, movies, plays, wine tasting, or whatever. But there is another aspect of the holiday season for us to examine. It is the phenomenon known as S.A.D. or seasonal affective disorder. Now, this certainly does not affect everyone equally. I must admit that I am a person who is greatly affected by the seasons by the weather. What happens for many individuals is that they are affected by the fact that in the winter months, especially

in the far north in places like Alaska, Iceland, Scandinavia, Minnesota and other northern states, it is typically much colder and darker. The shorter days are usually also much colder. Add to the weather; additional factors are that, for many, there are many more things going on, such as decorating, perhaps getting a tree, attending parties and other events, writing Christmas cards, preparing special food and special meals, like Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, which are typically more like feasts. It is not that these tasks and events are not enjoyable, it is the fact that, for many, these things represent much more activity than usual. More activities, more multi-tasking, can also become more stressful. Then add to the mix that many people get less sleep, less exercise, and eat much more. Also, because of the shorter days and many times darker days, one is receiving less sunlight. There also are psychological factors. For some, it is a time to remember the

loss of a loved one, such as a spouse. When the family gets together, it can be a time of love and joy, but also a time of conflict, especially in families where there has been estrangement. Here are my hints for coping with the holiday season: First and foremost, be conscious of the above factors that I have mentioned. Compensation can include the following: When possible, expose yourself to sunlight, at least 15 minutes or more a day, when practical. Consider specialized light sources, Google light sources for seasonal affect. Amazon is one source, featuring a 10,000 lux Happy energy light, about $30. Get adequate exercise, typically at least 30 minutes a day for most people. Get adequate sleep. Be aware of diet excesses, especially excessive salt, fat and calorie intake. Sometimes that may be very challenging, especially when eating Thanksgiving or Christmas feasts! Be aware of psychological fac-

tors, especially when in gatherings of family or friends. It may be helpful to remember that this is typically also a time of stress for others, so making accommodations to that fact is appropriate. In other words, compassion for others. Make sure that you include spending time in activities that you enjoy. Spend some time each day doing whatever you are passionate about. For me, it is listening to classical music, solving computer problems, spending time with family and friends. Writing this paper was satisfying, especially if it becomes helpful to others. Be selective about your involvement in events or duties that your friends, relatives or associates suggest so that you do not get overloaded with excessive activities. Doing things for others during this potentially stressful time can be very rewarding. Counting one’s blessings is a positive way to compensate for the challenges of the season. I hope that this has been helpful.

This Friday, Atascadero’s signature holiday event Winter Wonderland will take place from 5-9 p.m. in downtown Atascadero. This year the organizers will grind approximately 50-plus tons of food-grade ice into fresh, powdery snow and form it into play piles and huge snow slides. There will be food, music, over 50 vendors, and that beautiful snow. For more information, visit visitatascadero.com If you have not attended Holiday Magic at the Charles Paddock Zoo, put it on your list of “to-dos” and don’t miss this remarkable event on Dec. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Zoo. This event allows you to celebrate the holiday season with animal friends at the Zoo when the animals will be receiving holiday gifts that have been crafted with care by zookeepers and some extraordinary elves. There will also be exclusively made toys and enrichment items for them and you can watch them rip, claw and tear open their presents. Some animals may even eat their gifts, which are made for that purpose. For more information, call 805-461-5080. Just a reminder that Coats for

If you are interested in volunteering, call me at 805-461-1234. On Monday, Dec. 16, we will do the same routine at the National Guard Armory on Olmeda and Traffic Way in Atascadero. We will set-up on Monday and Tuesday and distribute it on Wednesday the 18th. Even if you only have an hour to help, I encourage you to come by. You will be impressed with how we transition the Armory for this wonderful “giving” event. Loaves and Fishes will be there with boxes of food for the families, Kiwanis and the Marine Corps Reserve will provide toys, Coats for Kids will have warm coats and jackets for the families, and the Salvation Army will have vouchers for meat from the grocery store. This is an event started by Loaves and Fishes and is our “umbrella” organization. Jeanne Robbins acts as chairman (followed closely by her husband, Carl). These are busy times I know, but let’s all remember those among us who are less fortunate. Remember, “Hello, Human-kindness!” Cheers!

who graduated with a petroleum engineering degree from the University of Wyoming and he too is doing extremely well. A fourth brother is following in his father’s giant footsteps. I never had such options after high school. My parents said my brother went to college and I would too. Period. Of course they never gave me a dime to do so. I think the only reason my brother went to West Point, and later MIT, was because he didn’t have any money saved after high school like I did. It would have been a huge waste of his genius had he not gone to college. I had to augment my savings with work in the oilfields every summer to get me through college and I had to do it in three years because that's all the money I had. When I graduated I was flat broke and desperate so I got a job as a cowboy making $300 less per month than I was making in the oilfields. I've made my living mainly as a writer and never took a class in journalism or creative writing in my life. I began my formal education after I graduated from university. e are in the heart of winter and quickly approaching the winter solstice, which occurs on Saturday, Dec. 21. Our daily lives are affected by the shortened days with fewer and fewer hours of daylight leading up to the solstice. On the day of the solstice, we will experience the shortest day or the longest

night of the year. Here in Central California, we will experience between nine and ten hours of daylight, whereas, on the Summer Solstice, we experience fourteen hours. The dark triumphs over the light on the Winter Solstice. After that, the days get longer again and it's time to celebrate the return of the sun. The energy of winter and the time leading up to the Winter Solstice calls us to turn within for reflection and rest. Everything lies dormant, awaiting the return of the light. It's a great time to contemplate the seeds you planted in the fall, which will begin to sprout up above the ground as the light becomes more prominent again. Allow yourself to feel your emotions and experience the darkness of winter without fear knowing that the energies of new life and inspiration are birthing within you. Nurture yourself with compassion, rest, and reflection.

As you do so, it can become the spiritual cradle into which your inner light and new life are born. Our souls long for silence. It is from the silence where all things new emerge. I have heard it said that silence is the highest form of prayer. I couldn't agree more. It's what lies underneath all thoughts, feelings, words, emotions, and even physical forms. Silence is a powerful presence as it is in, through, and as all of creation. We emerged from the silence and will one day return to it. Take this time of winter to court the silence. You can learn so much about yourself in the silence. Ten years ago, I attended my second five-night silent retreat. On the first day of silence, I was sitting in my chair in the meditation hall that morning after breakfast, when I noticed a compulsive "reaching for" something. It wasn't a physical reach

who I probably would not have met otherwise, so you could say my college years years were worth every penny. But if colleges and universities are just going to be useful as dating sites then we need to rethink the entire concept. Sometimes I get the feeling that colleges are more proud of their new football stadiums and basketball players than they are their most recent graduates. And far too many college professors are putting more emphasis on indoctrination than they are on education. College expenses have always out-paced inflation. I got a good taste of this when I went to college. The college I chose was undergoing a change from a “college” to a "university" and I remember asking a previous graduate what was the difference between a college and a university? “About $500 per year,” he replied. The major I chose was also undergoing a name change from “animal husbandry” to “animal science.” Again I asked my friend. “What’s the difference?” “Ah,” he replied, “now you’re talking about a huge difference. That's about a thousand per year."

but a reach of my attention and energy. I was pulled by a desire to grasp at or attain something. I went back into the silence for a while and eventually realized that it was my cell phone that was pulling the strings of my attention, which I didn't bring with me. I had become so conditioned to reach for my cell phone to check for text messages, voice mails, and so forth that the reaching continued even when the phone wasn't there. In that moment of realization, the "reaching for" dissipated back into the nothingness from whence it came. In the silence, you will discover so much about yourself and your natural state of existence. You will experience a greater sense of connection to Source and the liberation that comes with it. And so it is.

Joel Douglas Sorrow

oel Douglas Sorrow was born in Norwalk on March 18, 1972. He was the youngest of four children born to Reuben and Thelma (Dunn) Sorrow. After graduating from Templeton High School in 1990, Joel worked a variety of jobs, including working in the oil fields, installing fiber optic cables and a heavy equipment

operator in several states. In September 2019, he relocated to Gun Barrel, Texas, to work with Rail 1. Joel passed away Oct. 12, 2019, from medical complications after emergency surgery for diverticulitis. Joel was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his father; three siblings: Carolyn Huseby, Atascadero; Sandy Lopez (Michael), Palmyra, Neb.; and David Arana Sorrow (Efran), San Luis

Obispo; sons Austin and Aaron Sorrow Huseby, Paso Robles; nieces Sarah Ann Lopez, Danielle Huseby, Kyle Sorrow, and Geremy Lopez (Dana); and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Joel will be remembered as a fun-loving guy who loved to joke around with a laugh you could hear a mile away and an unforgettable smile. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who could not cook but was an expert at BBQ. He was always willing to lend a hand to help

or just sit and listen without judging. He will be missed by all that knew him. A Celebration of Joel’s life will be Saturday, Dec. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the home of Russ Scamara, 2775 Homestead Rd., Templeton. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to “The SORROW SCHOLARSHIP” Fund at Templeton High School, 1200 S. Main St., Templeton, CA 93465 Attn Theresea Scott.

their first two children, Issa (1955) and Greg (1956), were born, they moved back to Los Angeles, where Alexandra was born (1962). The next many years were

spent raising her children, teaching piano privately, and running the music program at The Oakwood School — a small private high school in North Hollywood. Mary remarried (Richard Bert Ferguson) in 1972. They bought 40 acres outside of Creston and moved there that next year. With a learn-bydoing attitude, Mary milked their cow and made butter and cheeses, canned and froze their garden harvests, raised chickens for eggs, pigs for bacon, and rabbits for the market. In 1978, they broke ground and over the next three years built their own 3,400 square foot

house, doing all the work “but the hot tar on the roof and the plaster on the thin wall.” Although music had taken a back seat to farming life, it wasn’t long before Mary grew a new cadre of piano students. Before their split in 1995, Mary and Rich backpacked the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Swiss Alps, the Pyrenees of Spain, and the Caucasus Mountains of Russia. After their divorce, Mary continued backpacking with groups and solo. She trekked the Brooks Range in Alaska and made many returns to the Sierra. She continued hiking well into her 80s, frequently visiting Cerro

Alto and other local trails when she could no longer carry her gear or sleep comfortably on the ground. She retired from piano teaching when she was 85. Mary leaves as her legacy three children, three stepchildren, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and a sister. A memorial service is being planned for early 2020. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Central Coast Music Teachers Association by contacting them directly at 805-237-2281.

he had a light hand, be it with horses or cattle or crew, He spent most of his life learning this cowboy trade, and he’d be honored to teach it to you. “There’s a good feller”, just four little words, and their meaning won’t run all that deep, But when Dad would use ‘em to describe certain men, You knew they were at the top of the heap. “There’s a good feller”, just four little words, but they’ve always been favorites of mine, If after my trails end, my name’s brought up, “There’s a good

feller” would suit me just fine.” — Adapted from “Four Little Words” by Jay Snider Hoppy was the firstborn child to Delbert and Thelma Fowler on June 4, 1948. He would go on to be blessed with four younger siblings, (Tim, Tom, Marilyn, and James). He took his role as the oldest of five children seriously, always serving and taking care of others. Hoppy grew up a true American Cowboy and was raised loving the outdoors, riding horses, learning how to work hard, and hunt. Hoppy’s fondest childhood memories included working as a cowboy on the COJO Ranch (off Point Conception) in Lompoc. At a young age, Hoppy, was drafted and served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany in 1968. Hoppy was a hardworking man of many talents and abilities. After serving in the Army, Hoppy worked many years in the oil fields in California. Hoppy

both drove and serviced 18 wheel trucks and could often be found on the weekends out hunting and enjoying the great outdoors or tinkering and rebuilding something. Hoppy came home to California 12 years ago and spent his remaining years managing his brother’s ranch in Bradley. Hoppy’s greatest accomplishment and most enjoyable moments were spent with his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. He found abundant joy in passing down his love for (and skills) in hunting, shooting guns, working, and playing practical jokes. Local friends knew they could catch up with him at Cowgirl Cafe downtown Paso Robles. He enjoyed his breakfast with old friends and making new ones. Hoppy was one of the kindest, truest American gentleman. He never knew a stranger, just a friend he hadn’t met yet. His sincerity and love for

people was evident to all who met him. His smiles and hugs were the warmest and given freely. Hoppy was one of the last of a dying breed — a true American loving, gentleman of a cowboy who loved and lived to help others. His loss will be felt, not only by family, but by an entire community. Hoppy is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, two brothers and his sister. He is survived and deeply missed by his brother, son, step children, and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Hoppy — now there’s a good fella!! The family invites you to join them in saying their final good-byes. Visitation was at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home at 1703 Spring St., Paso Robles, on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019. Funeral Service was Friday, Dec. 6, 2019, at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home. Burial followed at Paso Robles Cemetery.

CORRECTION MONTEREY BAY POWER A story that ran Dec. 4 on Monterey Bay Power in San Luis Obispo County should have read: The Atascadero City Council chose not to explore a partnership with the power company. Councilmember Susan Funk and Councilmember Charles Bourbeau were outvoted 3-2 to agendize the item for a formal discussion. To report a factual error in a story, email editor@colonymedia.us.

Firefighters battle a fire on Dec. 5 at 6870 Serra Ave., Atascadero. The fire was contained to a bedroom in the house, according to the Atascadero Fire Department. “Our instincts kicked in,” Little said. “My mother, who is her daughter, the nurse and I just started getting her out.” An Atascadero Police Department officer was first to arrive at the home and helped get the elderly woman out of harm. Smoke billowed out of the house and streamed high into the sky. “They got here so fast,” Little said. “We didn’t even have her all of the way out of the house and they were already

here helping.” Paramedics attended to the woman on the street in front of the house. As a precaution, San Luis Ambulance Services transported her to Twin Cities Hospital. Everyone inside the home, including two dogs, got out of the house without being injured by the flames. “They moved pretty quickly and didn’t panic,” said AFD Fire Chief Casey Bryson.

“They did a good job getting her out to the street where she could be treated.” Firefighters from Atascadero, Templeton, Paso Robles and Atascadero State Hospital fire departments contained the blaze in 25 minutes to what appeared to be a garage converted into a bedroom on the south end of the east-facing home. PG&E cut power to the house and Southern California Gas Company turned off the gas.

The fire was limited to the house and did not spread to nearby dwellings or vehicles. Damage to the home and contents was estimated at $20,000 by AFD. AFD believes the cause of the blaze was due to the sparks from a faulty electrical outlet in the converted bedroom. When asked if she felt like a hero, Little answered, “We got our grandma out. That is all that is important.”

Judge Rules Atascadero Man Can Stand Trial in Murder STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO — A judge has ruled the case against an Atascadero man charged with murdering a Paso Robles man can move forward to trial, according to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office. After a preliminary hearing, San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Craig van Rooyen said there was sufficient evidence for Kejuan Guy

Bynum, of Atascadero, to be tried for the murder of Cristopher Vento Wilson, 23, that occurred in Shandon during the early evening of June 1. It is also alleged that Bynum used a knife during the homicide and that he was previously convicted of robbery, which is a violent felony under California’s Three Strikes Law, the DA’s Office reported. Bynum faces life in prison if convicted. At about 5 p.m. on June 1,

deputies responded to a 911 call reporting that two men had been fighting in the 200 block of Escondido Way in Shandon, and one of the men was stabbed, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Office. When deputies arrived, Wilson was being treated by Cal Fire paramedics, according to the Sheriff ’s Office. Wilson was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Bynum was found in a ve-

hicle that police stopped at the 4th Street exit off Highway 101 in Pismo Beach and was taken into custody. Bynum is being held without bail at the San Luis Obispo County Jail and is scheduled to return to court for arraignment on Dec. 18. This case was investigated by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Office and is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Delaney Henretty.

this and Clickard did that’... I’m realistic.” The accomplished district veteran has a storied career, but always recognized those around him. The first-ever Golden Gavel award for the CSBA Board Member of the Year adds an individual award for CSBA, alongside the Golden Bell and Golden Quill awards, and among several thousand board members and nearly 1,000 school districts in California, is exclusive. Clickard, representing Atascadero, is currently the first-and-only member of the CSBA Golden Gavel Hall of Fame. “My mom always said, ‘just say thank you,’” Clickard said, “and D.J. called and said, ‘you always make it about somebody else, but just be quiet and let it be you’ because it’s leadership. I’ve had to digest all of this stuff.” Saying Thank You Given 60 seconds for a thank-you speech, Clickard noted the support of his fellow school board members, faculty and staff, CSBA, and the Atascadero community. “I stood up there in front of thousands of people,” Clickard said, “and it got really quiet.” As Atascadero High

ing how to run the business. Along with leading the sales and marketing efforts, Ryan’s role has expanded to learning about how to manage production and people and the changes as the business evolves. “It is a constant balance of honoring our heritage and contribution of our employees,” Ryan said, “while still pushing toward the future where future employees can spend their careers.” “In the past, Casey Printing has printed the Paso Robles Country News, we’ve produced a local telephone directory,” said Rich. “We’ve been involved in the printing and publishing business here for a long time all the way from Santa Barbara to San Jose.” A century can hold a lot of prosperous and hard times and for a business to weather the storm demonstrates its ability to adapt to the changing times and technologies. “Everybody had their own press room back in them and that all through consolidation downsizing and everything else, they’ve all gone away,” said Bill listing companies that have fallen by the wayside or news organizations that sold there inhouse press and outsourced work. The gentlemen attribute their lasting power to the company’s ability to welcome and master new methods and machines for printing, and to the community they serve and hire

counted people were children ages infant to 5 years old and senior citizens. The homeless population is also a difficult demographic to nail down but is vital to have an accurate count since they use city and county safety net resources. The larger the number of people in an area, the more funds and resources available from state and federal agencies. The County formed a committee to help reach those hard-to-count people as well as to educate people on the importance of the census. “The Complete Count Committees are there to reach out to, in our particular case, the seven cities of San Luis Obispo County as well as stakeholder groups, nonprofits hard-to-count,” said Peschong in a phone interview. “The ad-

Donn Clickard sits at his desk at the Greyhound Foundation’s office, located at the former site of Del Rio Continuation school on Del Rio Road. Photo by Luke Phillips. School athletic director, Clickard received more than few state and national awards, but this one was special. He took a moment to appreciate the historic moment representing Atascadero as the first-ever recipient of the Golden Gavel — then he began his speech in front of 3,000 of his peers. “I believe we hold the most

important elected position in any community in the state,” Clickard spoke as representative of school board trustees across California. Clickard is known for saying, “you don’t throw an event just to get it over.” He is one to take advantage of his time with a microphone, but he stayed the course and finished

his 60-second speech. “You could ask anyone who knows me, and they would tell you ‘Clickard can’t even say good morning in 60 seconds,’” Clickard said with a chuckle. A Unique Community When Clickard spoke about the uniqueness of his community, a few specific projects stood out.

to work with them. Rich said the majority of their employees have been with the company for 20 to 30 years. “This is where we want to stay and work and that’s why we’re here. The reason we’ve managed to stay here so long is because we’ve had such amazing customers over the years and employees,” Bill said. The printing company offers several types of printing that include web printing, letterpress, offset and digital output machines. However, customers should not be thrown off by the terminology. All the options boil down to the Casey family having more tools at their disposal to create a superior product with price points that suit the client’s needs. In the past, newspapers were the primary media to share information on a large scale. With the introduction of the information highway, the whole industry was flipped on its head. Companies like Casey Printing allow smaller newspaper operations to continue to play a vital role in providing trustworthy information on a local scale. “We’ve seen really good smaller community niche publications do well in the face of what is going on in the internet,” said Rich. “For example, some newspapers that we print started in Gilroy and Morgan Hill a few years ago and they’re community newspapers and they are doing really well.” The company continues to evolve and look for other ways to serve the business commu-

nity. Casey Printing is seeking to expand its market in the wine industry. The business has also branched out in the medical industry. “There’s some medical device manufacturers on the Central Coast and they make little parts,” Bill said. He went on to say that local olive oil companies are on the rise and the company does labeling and packaging for them. “Real short-run stuff, they might only do 500 or 1,000 bottles a year, but they want a high-end look.” As fifth-generation in the business, Ryan is part of the future of the company, and looking at how Casey Printing and print media can have an impact on the next 100 years. Ryan and his family are Paso Robles residents, and bringing the local newspaper into the Casey print house has a special meaning, and his family has a long-standing history with local print and journalism. “One of the things we share with Colony Media is the rich history of what journalism can do,” Ryan said. “The contributions that Paso Robles Press and Atascadero News made to the Northern San Luis Obispo County area, along with what Bob Chute did with Paso Robles Magazine, it has had a tremendous influence on the community.” Casey Printing and Colony Media continue a legacy of local print, and both share the value that print holds over other forms of immaterial media. “What the printed word

can provide is a lot more powerful than clickbait,” Ryan said. “Print provides something for the community that can’t be done with anything else — memorializing a historical event, in physical form. There is a big difference between seeing your kid’s picture online and seeing it printed in a newspaper.” The oldest form of media has new life, according to Casey, as the new generations begin to find value in print. “It is interesting to watch millennials discover print,” Ryan said. “It is almost like print is a new thing.”

ministration office of the count is heading this up and they’ve been working with the cities and nonprofits.” SLOC Project Contact Kristin Eriksson said the committee is comprised of County and city staff and some nonprofits. She said the group has met a few times and has received input from the various entities to ensure they are getting a coordinated effort. “We have not added any businesses at this point, although we imagine we will be reaching out to them in the future,” Eriksson said. Verdin Marketing Agency won the contract to design an outreach campaign that Eriksson said is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. “Basically what we’re looking for is messaging that is consistent with the state messaging but also localized to SLO County,” said Eriksson.

“We’re also looking for them to develop materials and tool kits that we can share with the cities and with our nonprofit partners as they work on their own outreach efforts.” Another demographic the Committee is targeting are college students. Eriksson said this demographic is one of the hardest to count on the Central Coast. She said that Verdin is looking at ways to appeal to and educate this demographic. The Committee is also reaching out to Cal Poly in hopes of capturing an accurate count. Closer to home, Paso Robles Adult Service Librarian Karen Christiansen said her Library plans to dedicate a computer for the census. “So, if you don’t have a computer at home or need help for some reason you can come here and get help from the reference desk folks,” said Christiansen.

“Joy Playground is a good example, because of how that happened,” Clickard noted. “Those moms [Sarah Sullivan and Jenelle Allen] had kids with special needs and knew they had to get this done. And Geoff Auslen, and all the people who got involved with that.” Clickard recognized the value of the teammates he worked in building the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation over the past 25 years. “We started in 1970, playing basketball at lunch,” Clickard said, “with Stecher and Nelson, then Larry and Dan. It was never the same people. In doing that, you are learning to play together, trust each other, every day, and we did that for 20 years. We did these things together.” Over the years, that bonding bore fruits for AUSD, and in 1994 was the ground on which the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation formed. “When we did the foundation in 1994, it was a group that knew each other,” Clickard said. “We built the track and the stadium, and then when Jeff [Filipponi] died, Doug [Filipponi] came to us and said ‘we need to do something,’ and we formed Lighthouse. We had the foundation in place.” His quick sentence was

the fast-forward version of the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation. The organization now boasts several addiction prevention programs in the form of “productive use of leisure time” and mentorship between high school and middle school students and is most wellknown for the Lighthouse program and coffee company run by students at Paloma Creek High School. I’m Not Done While Clickard credits teammates past and present, he identified his part in the 50-year career as a member of the AUSD. “My goal was always to be better,” Clickard said. “Make it the best there is. My job was to lead folks to make these things happen.” After 50 years of working for and guiding the community through the school district, he still has goals for the road ahead. “Oh, the next 10 years ... gosh, I’m 78,” Clickard said. “We’re not done, for sure. [AGF] is a unique program. It is not supported by a national organization — it is just us. My main objective is to sustain our foundation and bring in youth, so that [AGF] continues to get better. I am not done with what I want to contribute — I’ll be 79 next year, but I’m not done.”

Hit the Lights!

Atascadero City officials, along with a group of youngsters from the community, provided a countdown to the official lighting of the city's downtown holiday decorations, including two Christmas trees in Sunken Gardens and a giant wreath atop City Hall. Below, Santa and Mrs. Claus visit with children after the ceremony, members of the Atascadero Community Band entertain the crowd and a family visits one of the two Christmas trees on display. t’s nearly Christmas in Creston. Sure, I realize it’s nearly Christmas everywhere, but it feels extra special out here in the country where the community goes all out for the season. Crestonites are putting up lights only family, friends and a handful of neighbors are likely to spot. We’re opening our homes and farms to family and friends, gathering our clubs and our kids to celebrate the season with parties and dinners and bonfires and services and, yes, even looking forward to a lighted parade and a visit from Santa Claus. Creston Community Church kicks off the season with its Christmas Tree Lighting at 5:30 p.m. on December 8. This free, public event at the corner of O’Donovan Road and Adams Street includes Christmas music, cowboy beans, cookies, coffee, hot chocolate and cider. The CATCH Fund Creston Cowboy Christmas Party keeps the festivities going Dec. 14 at Creston Community Center, 5110 Swayze Road. Proceeds from the catered dinner benefit further improvements to the center. The evening includes music, access to raffles and a lively home-made dessert auction. Seating in the old firehouse is limited, so only 100 tickets will be sold at $45 per person or $400 for a reserved table of eight. No tickets at the door. Call 805-610-1517 to secure your ticket. The following Saturday brings the Creston Christmas Light Parade. Locals light up anything they can get their hands on — tractors, trucks, boats, horses, kids — for this fun outing CONTINUED ON PAGE B3

through our village. It’s everything a small-town gathering was meant to be: small, local, festive. If you plan to take part, plan to arrive early, bring your own chair and to find a spot along the route or get yourself in the parade lineup at the Longbranch Saloon, 6258 Webster Road by 5 p.m. Christmas Eve starts bright and early for Creston Christmas Eve along Webster Road. The long-time Creston tradition begins when campfires, tripods and good old coffee pots are set up for some deep, dark, cowboy coffee, the men cook up the sausages and set out the breakfast burritos, and Creston 4H Club leads youth activities. Meanwhile, Creston Women’s Club and Creston Volunteer Firefighters usher Santa Claus to the newly reinstalled bench outside Creston Post Office where he accepts any last-minute requests from Creston-area children. The festivities begin shortly after sunrise with Santa’s arrival close to 11 a.m. depending on how the reindeer are pulling. Creston Community Church, 6256 Adams St., wraps up the pre-Christmas events with its own Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m.

I

t is clear to me by the slow and gradual buildup of sweatshirts and sweaters in the back seat of my car that winter has indeed finally come. Now, if you know me, or even just casually follow me on Twitter, then you know that I despise the cold more than any one thing on this Earth. It’s why I live here in the beautiful, sunny Central Coast where it’s 70 degrees, 355 days out of the year. Not only do I hate being cold in general, but you would not believe how hard it is to update you all with scores when my hands have frozen into human mittens with each of my fingers frozen together like a duck’s foot. Weirdly enough, however, as much as I hate the cold, I would much rather freeze to death than burn to death, but that’s neither here nor there. Winter is here and that means that we have new sports, new seasons and about three months of new stories that are yet to be written, both literally and figuratively. In the winter season, there are now only three different sports going on in the North County — boys and girls basketball and soccer, and wrestling. Girls water polo moved to the fall since we moved to the Central Section. It was the Templeton Eagles that dominated the winter last season as both the boys and the girls earned Ocean League titles along with the boys soccer team. The Eagles don’t have a wrestling team and therefore went three-for-four in league titles, which is about as dominant as a high school can be in a given season. As we are just a few weeks into the season, I have now had a chance to see nearly, if not all, the teams in action at least once. A few have stuck out and will give the North County a great shot at once again locking down a few league titles. I wouldn’t say that the following picks are a lock by any stretch but, “toot toot” (that is me tooting my own horn for being nearly perfect with my recent picks). Both Atascadero and Templeton look to have strong boys basketball

Hounds Primed for Breakout Year ATASCADERO — The Atascadero High School boys soccer team experienced an upand-down season last year when they went 12-14-2 overall but came on strong at the end of the year, winning eight of their final 10 regular-season games to finish second in the Ocean League. “We did some things last year and we are building on that,” Atascadero head coach Gary Setting said. “And now I feel like we are right back where we were at the end of last year’s season, so we are really trying to polish things a little bit.” The Hounds return 14 players from a year ago, including key contributors — Julio Lopez, JJ Subia, Titus Ayala, Martin Anguiano and goalkeeper Seth Camp. Despite their under .500 overall record, Atascadero went 9-3 in the Ocean League, placing second behind the 10-2 Eagles who graduated more than 10 CONTINUED ON PAGE B11

ATASCADERO — Atascadero High School wrestling has been going through a recent downturn, following decades of dominance in the Dan Pry, Chris Ferree and Jeff Spiller coaching eras. They brought in new head coach, Sohrab Movahedi, to get it back on track. “I am pretty excited about this team because it’s a numbers game and we are filling up all the weight classes,” Movahedi said before the dual meet against Paso Robles on Wednesday. “We are filling up every weight from 106 to 285 and we do have some hammers on this team.” Movahedi is a young coach who recently graduated from Cal Poly and wrestled for the Mustangs for five years. In high school, Movahedi went 117-39 in his final three years, including 55-5 as a senior year when he placed second at nationals. Movahedi’s early focus has been getting more bodies in the wrestling room. In his short time with the Hounds, returning wrestlers and the community have started to notice. “Last year we didn’t have a lot of wrestlers, we were just scraping by and would only score like six points and that was it,” said 152-pound wrestler and team captain Sean Hall. “It has been awesome. I love seeing everyone out there and wrestling with all the freshmen and all of the sophomores. I love seeing some kids coming back. It feels good going into the room and seeing a bunch of the same faces every day and it just helps everyone out.” Alex Chavez, who wrestlers at 160 pounds, echoed Hall, saying, “The main difference is

Eagles Soccer Rebuilds Following Ocean League Title

Templeton looks to fill holes from 14 graduated seniors By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com TEMPLETON — The Templeton High School boys soccer team is coming into this season as the reigning Ocean League champions, fresh off its best season in more than a decade. The Eagles face an uphill battle this season as THS graduated 14 seniors off of a 17-win team from a year ago. The Eagles graduated all three of their captains, Charlie Raine, Nathan Lebens and Sam Alsup. Lebens was also the team’s leading scorer. Templeton also lost both of their excellent goalkeepers, Branton Fouquet and Dan Marshall. While the Eagles did lose more than 60 percent of their roster from a year ago, they return two starters, one up front and one in the back end, Rusty Cohen and Tom Onings. Both seniors were selected as captains for this season along with junior Abraham Glossner, and look to lead their young teammates when Ocean League play begins next week. Cohen was third on the team in scoring

there is a lot more people. We can be drilling and it will get hot in there [wrestling room]. It is nice having a lot of kids in the program because you can really build up from there and having good leaders in the room really helps.” While the Greyhounds enter this season with a young team, they are growing and, if healthy, will not be giving up points without a fight on the mat. On Wednesday, the Hounds hosted the Bearcats in their first home dual of the season and the community responded by filling up Ewing Gymnasium. Atascadero jumped out to a quick 12-0 victory with the Bearcats forfeiting their first two weight classes. The Bearcats, who look to be one of the top teams in the area, came charging back. It was a perfect storm for PRHS on Wednesday as the core of their team is in the lower weight classes where the Hounds have mostly first-year wrestlers. Following the first five matches,

teams that should finish near the top of the league. I think it might be the Greyhounds that have a minor edge this season. Neither side is particularly senior-heavy, but the Greyhound nucleus of Mitchell Carpenter and Dylan Talley, who already have a full varsity season under their belt, and you throw in the return of Ayden Bremer who has taken the distributing responsibili-

last year with seven goals and is the focal point of the Templeton offense. Through four games, Onings has become the vocal leader in the back. “It’s a young team,” said THS coach Dale Wiggins. “We lost 14 seniors last year, so it is a different dynamic of a team and we are figuring out the pieces. Right now, it is a bunch of kids that need to learn to play together. I wouldn’t say it is like starting at square one, but, you know, it is a developmental year.” Templeton is off to a slow start to the season at 0-4, but that has not discouraged the team or coach Wiggins. Their nonleague schedule included some of the top teams in the Mountain League, like the SLO Tigers, Arroyo Grande Eagles and Paso Robles Bearcats. While the Eagles would certainly like a win in their first four contests, most, if not all, Ocean League teams have started slow since the Central Coast moved into the Central Section. The move resulted in two new leagues — Ocean and Mountain — being formed based on the size of the schools. This leaves the small-

Paso Robles had three pins and led 28-12. Hall and Chavez ignited the AHS crowd with back-to-back pins and brought the Hounds within four points of the lead. “In the match, you know that if your 152-pounder gets a pin, you don’t want to be that guy that gives up the next match,” Chavez said, following his match. “You have to keep the ball rolling for your team so I just go in there knowing I need this for my team and I am going to fight as hard as I can for them because we are a family out here.” The Hounds are anchored by four experienced wrestlers this season — Cael Cooper (138), Zerek Brown (126), Hall, and Chavez, who all return from last year’s team. “We have a bunch of other tough guys,” Movahedi said. “But those are our four main really tough guys, but, I mean, every weight is stacked.” Atascadero’s next home dual will be on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when they invite the SLO Tigers to Ewing Gymnasium.

ties away from Carpenter and allowed him to play off the ball more, and I think it will ultimately come down to them and Nipomo for the league title. However, the Eagles are a deep and tall team, perhaps the tallest in the league. If they get hot at the right time, they could cause some serious trouble, especially for the Hounds, who are a small, jump-shooting team. In girls soccer, we could potentially end up with a pair of league champions as the

er Ocean League filling their non-league schedule with games against Mountain League schools or traveling to the Valley for games. Templeton’s schedule begins to lighten up after this weekend, but they will open their league slate with a huge road game at Atascadero, who they beat out for the league title a year ago and looks to be one of the top teams this year. In terms of playing style, the Eagles are searching for an identity. They try to adapt their game plan depending on the team that is in front of them. “I think it depends on who we are playing,” Wiggins said. “The thing with the Ocean League is that every school is different, so we kind of go at each school differently. Some we can be very offensive and some we have to play more defensively. I think it will be a mix of both and like I said earlier, we are still just figuring out the pieces.” The Eagles’ next home game will be on Thursday night as they welcome the Nipomo Titans in to begin the defense of their Ocean League crown.

seniors off their roster and are primed to make a run at the title this year. Atascadero has experience at all three levels and expects to be solid throughout the midfield as they return the entire unit from a year ago. Just as they did last year, Atascadero scheduled a brutal preseason slate of games that got them off to an 0-3 start. They began to bounce back in the Cats and Hounds tournament they joint hosted with Paso Robles over the weekend. The tournament was held at four different locations on the Central Coast (Atascadero High School, Paso Robles High School, War Memorial Stadium and Morro Bay High School) and welcomed 13 different schools including Tranquility, Elsinore, Orcutt Academy, Righetti, Coast Union, Sanger, San Marcos, Mission Prep, Lemoore, Cabrillo, Avenal, Morro Bay and Santa Barbara to compete against Atascadero and Paso Robles. The Santa Barbara Dons walked away as the weekend champions, defeating Morro Bay, Nipomo, Paso Robles and then San Marcos in the finale. The Hounds went 2-2 over the weekend but found their offense as they kicked the tournament off with a 5-1 victory over Tranquility. In the win, Atascadero showcased what they can do when firing on all cylinders. The midfield held the ball and controlled the flow of the game and then spread it out wide to their wings when they saw an opportunity. Senior forward Wyatt Hasch scored two goals and recorded an assist in the game as his speed was too much for the Tranquility defenders and he used it to get past the defense. While the Hounds scored five goals in the game, they could have scored 12 if their shots were on target. Atascadero was knocked out of the winner’s bracket by a heartbreaking loss in penalty kicks in their second game against Elsinore that went to overtime tied at 2-2. On Saturday, the Hounds won their first game of the day over the Righetti Warriors via forfeit and fell to Lemoore 2-0 playing shorthanded as two-time team captain and goalie Seth Camp missed the game to take the S.A.T. which landed Hasch in goal. Setting and the Hounds know they have a real shot at winning the Ocean League this year as the reigning champions graduated more than 12 players off their team from last season. “They know each other — they are playing well together, we have a huge roster, so I am really focusing on trying to develop some other players this preseason, so we are set in the case of an injury or something like that,” Setting said. “And one of the things we learned last year was just staying more conditioned throughout the season. It has been raining these last couple weeks and we have been out running on the track and doing things because they recognize that last year at the end of the season in our final game and CIF that we had two or three guys on the bench that we needed and some of it was just conditioning. We are committed to being a little bit stronger this year.” Along with Camp, Setting has elected sophomore Julio Lopez, an attacking midfielder that was a big part of Atascadero’s success last year, as the team’s other captain and has spent the preseason working on his leadership. “I still need to improve my game,” Lopez said. “I need to be more consistent and now I can’t just focus on me but also on the team and have to control the whole field and make sure my teammates are doing their jobs.” After the weekend, the Hounds are 2-5 and open league play on Tuesday, Dec. 10, when they get their first crack at the Templeton Eagles.

Templeton girls return some of the most important players from their 17-5 team last year and are too fast for other teams in their league. The girls are currently 1-3 on the season but have played three Mountain league teams and Santa Barbara. Don’t be surprised when the Eagles start a winning streak in the next couple weeks. While the Eagles are in contention for the Ocean League title, the Hounds are right there in the Moun-

tain League. Under Miguel Figueroa, Atascadero has always been right there, just one crucial game or two away from a league title, but in years past, they couldn’t win that game. This year could be the year they finally climb over the hump, but it will be difficult as SLO proved to be one of the top teams in the state a year ago. As for boys soccer, the Greyhounds should be the favorite in the Ocean League. After finishing the year red

hot and taking second behind the Eagles, the Hounds only lost three players and, most importantly, have an experienced keeper in goal, Seth Camp. The Bearcats are in the Mountain League, which is undoubtedly deeper than the Ocean League, but the Bearcats could not have started any better than they already have. The boys team won only nine games a year ago and is already 6-1 this year. They are strong at every level and also their coach Omar McPherson

had the best quote so far this year. When I asked him to highlight a few impact players for me in an interview earlier, he responded by saying, “I hate answering those questions. All my guys are impact players.” So, the Bearcats are bringing home the title, too. It’s starting to get real fun being a North County sports fan. Don’t forget to send a quick text or a little Facebook message to all your friends in South County just to let them know who is on top.
