ATASCADERO — In Mid-January, the City of Atascadero contracted True North Research to perform a tax survey to gather public opinion regarding raising the City’s sales tax rate. The firm formulated a questionnaire and posed the questions to residents via e-mail and telephone. However, Deputy City Manager Lara Christensen said that not everyone received an e-mail or phone call from TNR. “In order for this to work, [the study] has to be statistically valid,” Christensen said. Christensen explained that TNR polled a specific demographic. People receiving the survey must be registered voters since it is a proposed ballot measure. The company pulled information and names from the most recent registration list from the County of San Luis Obispo, among other sources. Participants must also be Atascadero residents. Since it’s a statistical poll, not every person meetings these requirements received the questionnaire or phone call. “You may have five voters in the household, but could only have one person in the household that would receive it because it’s based on a random selection,” Christensen said. Christensen said TNR would poll 400-plus people, which is standard for a city the size of Atascadero. The City expects to receive preliminary results around by late February or March. The $25,000 spent on the study not only collects useful feedback but may be considered a preventative cost. Creating a Measure to put on a ballot takes staff hours to develop and present to the public and City Council

Atascadero Police Chief: Smoking Ban is Working By LUKE PHILLIPS luke@atascaderonews.com ATASCADERO — According to Atascadero Police Chief Jerel Haley, the City ’s new rules regarding public smoking are having a positive effect. “We certainly were concerned in a couple of areas where we were having some problems,” Haley said during a City Council meeting Jan. 14. “But I’m happy to report that things seem to be going well. I’ve only been able to locate one call for service in the past several months in the area of Atascadero Avenue.” In September of 2019, the City of Atascadero updated it’s public smoking ordinance to ban smoking and vaping in the downtown area, along El atascaderonews.com

Camino Real, Morro Road and Atascadero Avenue and in many other public settings. They also moved to ban the possession of tobacco products by those under the age of 18 after the state of California changed its laws to allow minors to possess tobacco products. “The effect of passing the ordinance has effectively ended the behaviors by and large, at least to our knowledge — at least people are not reporting them if they’re continuing — so that’s a dramatic improvement and we’re grateful for that,” Haley said. NATURE

It’s Not Just the Bees, Butterflies are Disappearing Too

The Western Monarch Butterfly has been disappearing from the California landscape for decades

Photos by Brady Cabe By MARK DIAZ NORTH COUNTY — Since the 1980s, the Pismo Beach Grove Western Monarch Butterfly population has dropped from 200,000 to under 30,000. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received a petition to place the insect on the endangered species list in 2014. The department’s determination if the species is endangered was moved back from 2019 to December 2020. Danielle Bronson, State Park Interpreter III, who has worked on the Central Coast for more than a decade, said that she had witnessed the dramatic decline in their numbers. Each year, volunteers and park staff perform counts across the state to determine population numbers of the butterflies, called the “Thanksgiving Count.” “The Thanksgiving Count,

which is led by the Xerces Society, [tries] to get a snapshot of the population, because Monarchs are spread throughout the California Coast for the Western population,” Bronson said. The Western Monarch migrates from Canada and, in some cases, all the way down to Baja California, Mexico. Bronson said these counts focus on the wintering sites to produce an accurate number. According to the U.S. Forest Service, Monarchs can travel between 50-100 miles per day and it can take up to two months to complete their journey. The farthest ranging monarch butterfly recorded traveled 265 miles in one day. Bronson said a New Years’ count was added to help further the accuracy of the numbers. “There’s been a huge decline,” said Bronson. “And it’s hard to know 100 percent exactly what

the issue is because they cover such a vast territory.” Some possible leading causes Bronson listed were the loss of the insects’ natural habitat through human development, the elimination of milkweed groves that caterpillars feed on, and the failure of eucalyptus plantation sites know as stands. Native California milkweed is the sole food source for monarch caterpillars. The plant is vital for breeding and sustaining the monarch population. Emma Pelton, western monarch lead for Xerces, said that the non-native tropical milkweed is detrimental to the species. Milkweed can host a protozoan parasite called Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, which transfers to the caterpillars. The California milkweed is seasonal, causing the parasite to die off, but its tropical counterpart continues to flower yearround.

Pelton said the one takeaway she wants the public to know is not to plant tropical milkweed at any time and do not plant any milkweed within five miles of the coast. Monarchs use the eucalyptus stands as wintering sites. During their long journey, the butterflies rest on eucalyptus trees where they hang off the leaves. Being coldblooded, the insects rely on specific micro climates to keep their body temperature optimal. When wintering, the butterflies cluster on eucalyptus trees for added protection from the environment. Each insect weighs less than a gram. However, their accumulative weight has broken branches according to the U.S. Forest Service. During the early 1900s, the state government promoted the planting of the trees which originated in Australia. It tuned out the wood was ill-suited for commercial use. After 100 years, the eucalyptus stands are failing and some have been removed and replaced with native plants. The prolific use of insecticides in the commercial and public settings has dealt blows to then entire insect population. The Journal of Biological Conser-

vation reported that “over 40 percent of insect species are threatened with extinction.” Bronson explained the process of counting butterflies, saying the volunteers start in the morning because the colder temperatures help keep the insects from fluttering about. Two-person teams perform the counts. Partners compute a chosen cluster individually before sharing the number with their teammate. If the amounts are within 20 percent of each other, they record the mean of the combined tallies and move to the next group. The tested counting process was developed by Dennis Frey (Ph.D. Emeritus, Cal Poly), who used to tag butterflies individually. “He was able to test this counting method to find its accuracy,” Bronson said. “… he used the counting method beforehand and when he netted them down and counted them individually to verify whether that was a feasible count method of not.” Bronson said she loves when people do the jellybean count at baby showers or bridal showers because she is usually the winner.

WESTERN MONARCH MYSTERY CHALLENGE Help butterflies, win prizes! Western monarchs are at less than 1 percent of their population size in the 1980s. The Western Monarch Myster y Challenge is a campaign to find out where western monarch butterflies are in early spring. Monarchs spend the winter months (November to February) in groves along the California Coast and start breeding in Central California in May and continue through February. However, scientists know a lot less about where they are and what they ’re up to in February through May. Solving the mystery of where western monarchs spend the spring is central to conserving and restoring the phenomenon of monarch migration in the West. How you can participate: If you see a monarch outside of o ver winter ing groves, take a picture! Don’t worry, it can be far away and blurry. Please report it to iNaturalist (the app is free) and include species and location OR e-mail it to: Monarch Myster y@wsu. edu. Be automatically entered to win a variety of prizes ever y week you report a sighting Uploaded photos from outside the overwintering sites will automatically CONTINUE ON PAGE A11

EMERGENCY TRAINING

Look Up in the Sky! CHP Trains Over A-town

CHP conducts a training exercise with the Atascadero Fire Dept over Pine Mountain Photos by Luke Phillips By LUKE PHILLIPS NORTH COUNTY — On Friday, Jan. 25, looking out the window of the Atascadero News pressroom, a man could be seen dangling from a helicopter hovering over Pine Mountain. After a few quick calls, the paper discovered that the California Highway Patrol was performing training exercises. In conjunction with the Atascadero F ire Depar tment, the CHP Air Operation Program trained in hoisting personal with their H125 Airbus Helicopter. Sargent Steve Neumann of the CHP Air Ops stationed in Templeton said that the

program’s duties not only include chasing criminals but also performing rescue operations. The division works year-round training with different law enforcement agencies and emergency medical ser vices all over California. “It ’s is pretty much ongoing,” said Neumann, “It ’s always happening on some level or another with various agencies we work with throughout the state.” The purpose of the exercises is to provide ground personnel the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the procedures and emergency equipment used by the flight-op team.

“ There are many many times when we rely on the other agency that is already there to be our rescuers,” Neumann said.” They may already be on the ground or we may pick them up and insert them, so that ’s what this training is all about.” Neumann said the CHP chose Pine Mountain to train to simulate someone being injured in a hard-toaccess area where a helicopter may be the fastest way to deliver aid. The mountain is the location of a mountain biking path. On Friday, the flight team stationed itself in the Salinas riverbed and practiced inserting personnel onto some of the peaks of the

mountain. Helicopter Flight Officers are required to be paramedic, whereas the fixed wings pilots do not. The paramedic officers are in a unique situation in they perform both law enforcement and medical aid services. If needed, the helicopter can land to assist in providing medical care and transportation to the hospital. Neumann recalled an incident when the CHP chopper was in hot pursuit of a vehicle. The vehicle careened off a cliff, and the officers ended up landing to provide medical assistance. “In that particular instance, our crew goes from law enforcement chasing him to landing and providing him medical aid at the scene and transporting them to the hospital,” Neumann said. The next planned training exercise will take place at Nacimiento Lake on March 25. Called helocasting, the

team puts the helicopter into a low hover position and drops a rescuer into the water. The rescuer then attaches the device to the victim to be transported to safety. CHP works and trains with a technical rescue team.

Comprised of personal from all over the County of San Luis O bispo, the team is trained to perform water rescues. Neumann said that t h e s p e c i a l i z e d re s c u e r s assisted in the Friday exercise. Although the flight op team is most ofter deployed in the Monterrey and San L u i s O b i s p o C o u n t y, the y c an be deployed anywhere. Nuemann said that a couple times a year, the team assists in Sierra Nevada rescue operations. In YEAR when New Orleans flooded, CHP choppers traveled to Louisiana to support the state. M o s t o f t h e re s c u e work we do is say in the Affordable/high-quality spay and Ventana Wilderness up in Big Sur Coast and nobody neuter surgery available sees it because it’s back in Monday – Thursday the middle of nowhere,” Neumann said. He continued to say, “… it’s just not Woods Humane Society North County something people think of because they don’t think 2300 Ramona Road realize we have it, but it ’s Atascadero CA. 93422 a good partnership. We’re the only agency big enough (805) 464-5034 ncclinic@woodshumanesociety.org here to run an air program; it’s so cost prohibitive.”

OPINION The Atascadero News

CONTACT EDITOR LUKE PHILLIPS AT LUKE@ATASCADERONEWS.COM

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF THE ATASCADERO NEWS

Conducting Significant Volunteer Service

T

aking a position as an editorial board will always be something that we do with great consideration for all parties involved. As a local newspaper, we are intrinsic and connected to all aspects of our community. As we stated in our announcement about our editorial board formation, our purpose will always be loyal to what makes the community better. In the season of celebrating community pillars, the local chambers of commerce select their picks for their own particular version of “person of the year.” They are not without controversy, and not everyone will agree on the chamber’s choices. This year, Nipomo’s Citizen of the Year choice was met with a strong case against him because of his personal Facebook page feed. In response, Jim Harrison sent a letter to the Nipomo Chamber’s steering committee, declining the award. Paso Robles chose Mark Perry, whose resume for community giving and involvement in Paso Robles over his lifetime provides an established record in support of the honor of “Roblan of the Year.” At the Atascadero News, we have had three months to mull over the idea of Terrie Banish as

the Atascadero Citizen of the Year. When we first read the news, it was a collective sense of confusion over the choice. We discussed our initial response with Atascadero Chamber CEO Emily Reneau, and received her feedback. Between that time and the annual chamber dinner on Saturday, we have been able to sort through our confusion and unanimously agree to write an editorial stating our position. Terrie Banish was a terrific employee choice for the City of Atascadero. She has since put forth a monumental effort, and produced great results, in the execution of her office as the Deputy City Manager - Marketing/Promotions/Events. Terrie’s involvement with community organizations as an extension of her position has received high praise, and there is no evidence to insist it is undeserved. We might list her accomplishments and her impact on the community of Atascadero, but that would be a long list we believe is more justified (however misplaced) by the fact that she was chosen as the Atascadero Citizen of the Year for 2019. The fact that she is a resident of San Miguel has no impact on

our position as an editorial board. Her salaried position is with the City of Atascadero, and her report card is dedicated to the impact she has on this community. Under those credentials and criteria, it makes perfect sense that Terrie ought to be recognized for her impact on the community Atascadero, not by her city of residence. More and more, as we pondered and discussed our position as a board, we came up with the same conclusion every time. Terrie does a great job at her job. Outstanding. Atascadero is truly fortunate to be the recipient of the commitment, dedication, and — as Rachelle Rickard stated in her review of Terrie — her energy. But as an editorial board, we come away from Saturday’s Chamber dinner with the same sentiment we have not been able to shake since first hearing the news in October. From the details of her qualifications, to the essence of her speech, we cannot escape that the 2019 Citizen of the Year award was given to someone for doing a great job at doing their job — even going above and beyond in their line of duty. We are already aware, as a board, that former Citizens of

the Year truly appreciate Terrie’s impact on the community and have spoken in support of her receiving the award. We respectfully disagree with all of them. Of the names of past awardees — Donn Clickard, Jeannie Malik, Barbie Butz, Albert Almodova, Jimmy Quinonez, Jerry Tanimoto, and others — the honor of Citizen of the Year comes with a lifetime of giving to Atascadero, and each resume boasts of the efforts and impact delivered outside of the scope of their position of employment. When Jeannie Malik was chosen as the 2018 Citizen of the Year, the response was “about time.” The Atascadero Chamber Citizen of the Year is defined as “A person conducting significant volunteer service in the Atascadero Community and its surrounding area.” Reflecting on the chamber’s choice for 2019 — and the chamber’s choice for 2009 for that matter — the recognition was misappropriated. The integrity of the Citizen of the Year award is built by the list of recipients, not just by the decision-makers one year or another. We are sympathetic to CEO Emily Reneau, in taking on the position has seen nothing but an

uphill battle in her way in leading the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce into 2020. We appreciate the challenges she faces, and the support she needs from the City of Atascadero (a “Key Partner” to the chamber). We also acknowledge that the decision was made by vote, and our position as a board admonishes the decision-makers, many of whom we highly respect for their work in the community. We want a better community. As a board, we are in full agreement that Terrie Banish’s work has contributed to a better community for Atascadero. However, upon the full reflection of the award in hindsight, we are left with the impression Terrie was operating significantly within the confines of her job duties. Being a salaried City manager means not a lot of room for “conducting significant volunteer service.” We do not publish this without clear knowledge that we are pushing against the grain, but as a proud community partner with the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce, we will expect better. As a newspaper, we are going to push against the grain whenever we believe it makes the community better.

San Luis Obispo 2020 Local Elections

Lee Perkins

T

COMMENTARY

he sound of “2020” sounds pretty futuristic and yet here we are. 2000 seems like just a couple of years ago. Time flies! What are your expectations for 2020? On the political front, we have an immensely important national election as most of us are aware. The national election candidates have been campaigning for months now. But did you realize we have local elections to fill seats on our SLO County Board of Supervisors on March 3 Primary Election. For District 5 we have an incumbent, Debbie Arnold, running against our home town past Planning Commissioner, City Council person & past Mayor, Ellen Beraud, as challenger. There has already been two candidate

forums very well attended showing voters are interested in this election. We have more dates for District 5/Candidate Forums, Arnold vs Beraud, open to the public for the March 3 Primary Election: • Wednesday Jan 29 - Hosted by the Templeton Chamber of Commerce at the Board Room of the Templeton CSD (420 Crocker St, Templeton) 6-8 p.m. • Thursday Jan 30 — Hosted by the Latino Outreach Council & League of Women Voters at the Board of Supervisors Chamber, County Government Center (1055 Monterey St, SLO) 5-8 p.m. • Wednesday February 5 - Hosted by the SLO Chamber of Commerce at Hotel SLO (877 Palm St), 4:30-6 p.m. • Thursday Feb. 6 - Hosted by SLO U40 at the Madonna Inn (100 Madonna Rd, SLO) 6 p.m. • Tuesday Feb. 11 - Hosted by NAACP at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (2201 Lawton Ave, SLO) 6:30 - 8 p.m. Some of the issues Ellen Beraud supports for our county and specifically for north county are: Access to Childcare. The CA 201920 Budget included funding for univer-

sal preschool for all income-eligible four-year-old children in the state, to be phased in over a three-year period. This funding allows state preschool providers to offer full-day/full-year care to better accommodate working parents. The Budget proposes the development of a plan to achieve universal preschool for all children in California. The Budget includes a $500 million one-time General Fund to build child care infrastructure, including investing in the education of the child care workforce. To promote affordability and family bonding, the Newsom Administration is also committed to expanding the Paid Family Leave program ensuring all newborns and newly adopted babies be cared for by a parent or a close family member for the first six months. Our SLO Board of Supervisors needs to collaborate and support these efforts to make quality pre-kindergarten available, eventually, for all working parents who need it. Santa Margarita Gravel Mine. Yes, they are coming back again for approval for a mine utilizing up to 273 gravel trucks daily coming through the town of Santa Margarita, over the railroad tracks and past the elementary school.

Sensible Cannabis Regulation. The growing of cannabis in our county is a reality now with voters of SLO County entrusting our county leadership to facilitate sensible and safe policies around this budding industry. Infrastructure. Whether it’s developing pedestrian and bike paths, or repairing our aging surface roads and bridges, it is to our benefit to keep our infrastructure in good condition enabling our economy and encouraging tourism. Housing. Our children cannot afford to live here due to the high cost of housing, businesses across the county are finding it more and more difficult to fill jobs, and young families are being driven from our community. Rents are obscene. Sustainable Ground Water. We desperately need a transparent groundwater management plan that fairly and sustainably protects our county’s most precious resource-water. By implementing carefully considered, reasonable, and equitable water policy, we can promote economic growth, and preserve our water supply for our children and grandchildren and generations to come. A shout out to the film “Abominable”--finally a really good children’s film that appeals to adults. I highly recommend it.

A LETTER FROM OUR PUBLISHERS

Colony Media Becomes 13 Stars Media By HAYLEY & NICHOLAS MATTSON

W

e are welcoming in the new year with open arms, open hearts, and as so many have already referenced, 2020 Vision with open eyes. We have a lot of exciting opportunities facing us this year. After publishing the newspapers for almost six months now and consolidating two major local print companies under our roof, we are excited to begin Phase II of the process and improve the overall content in all our local publications. Coincidentally, Phase II will also bring us an overall brand change. We have operated under the name Colony Media for several years. Due to a

conflict, we could not reconcile at the corporate level with an existing company already incorporated under that name, we have chosen to migrate toward our existing corporate name of 13 Stars and run our print and digital publishing products under the DBA 13 Stars Media. With this change, the names of each publication will be at the forefront within the communities, which will allow them to have their own identity and continued community support. So why 13 Stars? The number thirteen has proven to be very lucky to our family and has been present throughout many significant moments in our life together. As for Stars, we believe that

everyone is destined for greatness, and no matter what stars were aligned when you were born, you have the opportunity to change them at any time. As we continue forward, we will strive to bring the very best in print and media services as well as create a company that inspires and allows greatness to grow. We value our time here and want to be sure that we are doing our part to build a better community on good and honest reporting of the stories that make a difference, and that impacts our lives. We believe that together we can do so much more. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to a prosperous 2020.

I can’t believe we’re getting ready for the Superbowl again! Seems like we just watched that! Well, I guess we’ll just have to accept the fact that another year has slipped by, so here we go again. It should be a good game and as usual, husband John has requested that “onion dip” be on the grub menu. Instead of the traditional sour cream and Lipton’s Onion Soup recipe, I’m going to try the following one. It “reads” well and should “eat ” well. We’ll see. I made a change or two to make it work better for us. SUPERBOWL ONION DIP Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 4-5 medium scallions, all parts thinly sliced 1 small yellow onion, thinly

Directions: Heat olive oil in small skillet over medium high heat. Add scallions and onion and cook until golden, about 3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and cook until lightly caramelized, 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely. In a large bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, chives, roasted peppers, lemon juice, onion flakes, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, salt, and pepper with caramelized onions. Transfer to a bowl for serving and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serve with potato chips. So, there you have it. Enjoy

Happiness today is having a large, caring and loving family... that lives far, far away. But it wasn’t that way back when I was your age. Back then if my mother needed a place to send me after school it was to my grandparents house, not to a day care center. There was no such thing back when I was a kid. If you looked up a person’s name in our phone book it was a little confusing, for every last name there was a John, a Johnny and a Johnny Jr.,Three generations living in the same neighborhood. A phone call to a ‘distant’ relative was not even “long distance” and you didn’t need an appointment to stop by and visit an uncle, an aunt, a brother or a sister. Close relatives really were... sometimes

right next door. Sundays were for beef roasts, penny poker, Uncle Charles’ homemade ice cream and my mom’s berry cobbler. The meal was always spiced with an assortment of family members from both sides of my family. Sometimes there were just as many people over on Monday to eat the leftovers. Christmas and Thanksgiving were mandatory family affairs but so were birthdays and anniversaries. When I was your age we didn’t know anything about Alzheimer’s disease. We just thought Grandma was getting a little senile, so we all took turns taking care of her. It was no big deal. When grandpa fell and broke his hip he couldn’t get any rest for all the friends and relatives that showed up to sit and chew the fat with him. Now days when a youngster wants to spend a week’s vacation with his parents he probably has to be shipped off, boarding a plane with a name tag around his or her neck to visit a divorced parent in a city far away. The nuclear family has blown apart. It scares me to know that city kids have to join violent gangs

to feel wanted, as if wearing the same color hoodie can replace the family feeling. When I was your age the only gangs I joined were Little League, Cub Scouts and the FFA. Family members filled the bleachers and bought the Girl Scout cookies. That was when I was your age... but now I am my age and like the rest of the baby boom generation, I moved away from home. Just like the brother who left the farm or the sis who moved to the big city, I pulled up my own roots and left in search of fame and fortune. Most of us did. A person will do almost anything for money it seems. I haven’t been back home in years and find I miss the place. I’ll go back someday, probably in a padded rectangular box to lay beside my grandpa and all my old school friends, acting as if I never left. Although I have a great wife, a nice home and a successful career I am at that stage in my life when I feel like I’m missing something. I miss my family. I think my whole generation does. I have a wonderful aunt and cousins I haven’t seen in decades and, sadly, some

I’ve never even met. We get Christmas cards from people I think are strangers, until I realize they are my very own kin folks. Once upon a time there were these things called family reunions but I’ve never actually been to one. We have bigger homes and more cars than our parents and yet we are not as rich. A Navajo Indian once told me that you can’t get rich if you have taken care of your family. And that’s what worries me. Who will take care of my generation? As the baby boomers get older it will be the parents who are the orphans. We cannot expect our good friend ‘what’s his name’ to be our caretaker, he’s got the same problem. And so we’ll be cataloged in rest homes and forgotten in warehouses for the aged, unable to reminisce with nurses we never knew. It will be lonely out there... growing old and hating it. We have pursued the American dream with gusto but forgot to bring our families along for the trip. Just think of all the fun we missed.

While he was away the world’s richest diamond mine was discovered right on his farmland. Sadly, he died without realizing the wealth he possessed all along. Jesus said that you are worth more than many sparrows. To Him you are worth more than many galaxies. You were purchased not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and His innocent suffering and death so that you may be His own and live with Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness and innocence. To Jesus you are what matters most. If God could give us eyes to see ourselves as He sees us we would be shocked. He sees

us as pure and holy, of infinite worth and possessing unlimited potential for good. Wouldn’t it be awesome to be able to see everyone through God’s eyes? There is no such thing as an ordinary person. Everyone you see is either an eternal glory or an everlasting horror. In Christ we are a royal priesthood. Without Christ we are yet in our sins, a catastrophic disaster. That is why Jesus came and why He sent us to love and help one another. Those walking in darkness need saving. They are of infinite worth, just as we are. No one is beyond hope. David Robert Tillman

avid Robert Tillman left this world peacefully at Stanford Hospital at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the age of 59. His loving wife Sandy at his side, he quietly drifted toward the light. Humble, kind, loyal, funny, brave and generous - all who are blessed to have known him will remember him as a man of the highest integrity and a natural leader. He loved kids, dogs, Jimmy Buffett, Crown Royal, motorcycles and Chrysler automobiles. He served the State of California for 30 years as a Highway Patrol Officer (Badge #11072), motor officer, FTO, CMTO, range officer and academy instructor. Born on October 9, 1960 in Biloxi, Mississippi, the fourth child of Jay and Lois Tillman, young David was a well behaved and shy child. Jay was in the Air Force, so the family moved around quite a bit, finally settling in Livermore, California. David graduated Granada High School in 1978 and hung around with his best friend, Jim Nally. They goofed off all day, chasing squirrels with BB guns until Jim’s wife, Joy, had had enough so she arranged

Harry and Evis have lived at the Atria Assisted Living for the past 5 years, where he touched the hearts of all with his ever present sense of humor. The residents, caregivers, and employees always looked forward to his daily jokes to brighten their days. He kidded everyone, but always with a very big smile. Sincerest thanks to all the wonderful staff in Palm Desert, CA Harry always said that there would come a day when he would be called for duty in “celestial navigation”. Surely, he has been welcomed with love and joy. He had the respect of all who knew him, young and old. No one who ever met him was a stranger for long. He was truly an honorable man and will be deeply missed by all, but never forgotten. There will be a dual memorial service in June at the Estrella Warbird Museum in Paso Robles,CA

an interview for Dave at Precision Metal Fabricators where he was able to put the welding certificate he earned from Chabot College to use. After a few years working as a welder, David followed in his brother Wayne’s footsteps and applied to the Highway Patrol Academy in West Sacramento in 1983. Upon completion the following year, he was assigned to Central Los Angeles Office. He patrolled the freeways of downtown L.A. for 18 years, 16 as a motor. He was passionate about his work in the field, never tiring of the demanding workload. He did several Protective Service Details, securing the routes through L.A. for dignitaries such as President George HW Bush, Vice President Dan Quayle, President Bill Clinton, First Lady Hillary Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and many others. He also became a field training officer. The success of his trainees was a responsibility he took to heart. He was an extremely organized person and remembered the circumstances of every citation he ever issued. In 1987, Sandy Potts lived in Culver City with her grandmother, Edith Potts. She worked as a stenographer at Central L.A. Growing up, Dave’s family did not celebrate Christmas. That year, he was the best suited person in the office to play Santa Claus. Sandy remembers the first time she met Dave, fake beard, dressed in a furry red suit while 3 or 4 guys tried to explain to him how Santa says “Ho! Ho! Ho!”. They eventually went out on a date and on the day of, Sandy left a sweet note on his Dodge pickup. Dave picked her up and they were having dinner when Sandy asked him if he got the note. It turned out, there were 2 officers who drove Dodge pickups and one of them was a married man. Thankfully, they were able to intercept the note left on the wrong vehicle before its owner or his wife discovered it. Dave and Sandy were married on March 20, 1988. At the time, David had handled his first battle with lymphoma and had undergone treatment that doctors said would probably affect the couple’s ability to have children. They took it in stride and

Evis M. Barnett

E

vis M. Barnett passed away October 25, 2019 in Palm Desert CA, just 50 days after her beloved husband of 70 years... left her side. Born in the family farmhouse near Lakefield, Minn. in 1930, Evis was raised in Long Beach after her parents relocated to California in 1935. After graduation from Jordan High School, she began her life journey traveling north on the 395 heading for Reno with her girlfriend to find work. It was 1947 and one stop in China Lake at the Naval Air Weapons Station and she was hired at the Michelson Lab. Evis met the love of her life, a Navy seaman, Harry Barnett and they were married in July 1949. She was very proud to be a Navy wife for over 20 years,

and enjoyed the company and friendship of the wives and children of deployed men. She once traveled by DC-3 to a stormy Adak, Alaska to visit Harry who was on deployment with his VP-2 flight squadron. Evis was a gifted homemaker when the family was young and entertaining was a favorite activity. She loved being a mother to her three daughters, Linda, Susan and Diane and encouraged each with their unique personalities. She emphasized kindness, tolerance, manners and that girls could do anything, no barriers. The second career for Evis was working in the Purchasing Dept. for the Ventura Community College District. She made life long friends in Ventura County for 30 years and her friendships were always forever. Evis and Harry enjoyed an exciting life, with travel

spent the next 10 years raising their two dogs Harley and Moxie, traveling on cross country motorcycle trips, attending Jimmy Buffett shows and visiting places like New Orleans and the Caribbean. Sandy knew that nature would find a way, and in 1998, daughter Rebecca Mae (Little Miss Magic) was born. In 2001, after 16 years on a motor in downtown L.A., Dave transferred to the Academy in West Sacramento as a motorcycle instructor in the prestigious motor officer program for 4 years. In 2006, the family moved to Paso Robles to be closer to the Potts family. Dave transferred to King City and re-connected with Steve Pierce, a colleague he knew from Central. In early 2008, David was diagnosed with a separate case of lymphoma, this time, in his brain. He again underwent chemo and radiation, all the while determined to return to his work on the road. And he did. By this time, he was assigned to the Templeton office. Although it was quite an adjustment from the fast pace of graveyard shift in L.A., he still loved his work. He never aspired to promote if it meant not working on the road. Patrol was the most demanding, but it is what he enjoyed. Sadly, all the chemo and radiation weakened his heart and he retired from the Highway Patrol in 2013, 6 months shy of 30 years. In retirement, he continued as a driving instructor for Precision Driving School. Like his citations he kept track of every student’s progress. He always took a trainee’s success to heart, ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed. He logged over 1,000 hours in driving lessons to local students and continued until he was physically unable to do so. His mind remained sharp, his sense of humor intact until the very end. Through it all, he never complained. His honest, brave, kind heart was simply no longer able to go on. David was preceded in death by his father, Jesse “Jay” Tillman and Sandy’s grandma Edith Potts. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughter Rebecca, mother Lois Tillman of Redmond, Oregon, sisters Sherry Isken (Michael) of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin;

often by “space available” on many types of Navy and Air Force planes all over the country. One of their car trips lasted for two years, visiting relatives and friends and just exploring the West. They spent one month every year in Hawaii and summers in Paso Robles. Settling in Palm Desert CA was a dream for a sun loving, warm natured grandmother. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and boasting of them was her specialty. She spent countless hours playing with dolls, beanie babies, trucks and tractors. She inspired everyone she met with her flair for fashion, her beautiful blue eyes and her deep, sincere compassion. Everyone she met was important and worthwhile and you knew you were special. As Evis and Harry transitioned into assisted living at Atria Palm Desert, their social life got even better. Again, the family thanks the wonderful staff that so loved our parents. Harry and Evis are survived by three devoted daughters, Linda Barnett; Diane Barnett, and her two children, Audra and Wesley Antczak; and Susan (Tom) Wilber, their three children, Tammy (Roger) Haas, Tina (Larry) Knight, and Randy(Elisha) Wilber. Five great grand daughters and three great-great grand daughters. Harry is also survived by one brother, Robert Welch, in Lawrence, KS. The loss of our father and then our mother, so suddenly, is tremendous, but the thought of them holding hands once again brings solace and comfort and peace to our sadness.

Phyllis Kosanke (Darren), Yvonne Tillman and Jeanne Tillman all residents of Redmond, Oregon; brother Wayne Tillman (Cheryle) of South Lake Tahoe, California; Mother-in-law Esther Santos Tucker (David) of Canoga Park; Brother-in-law Rick Potts (Renee Sauceda) of San Miguel; Sisters-in-law Tess Ramirez (Gonzalo) and Lynda Horejsi (Chris) of Paso Robles, his childhood friend Jim Nally ( Joy) of Manteca; nieces Amanda Isken and Georgiana Isken of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, Dara Rahm, ( Joe) of Okinawa, Japan; Bailey Snow (Reed) of Boise, Idaho; Melissa Serna of Los Angeles; Symantha Horejsi, and Madison Ramirez of Paso Robles; nephews Alex Isken of New York, NY; Sergio Serna (Elisabeth) of Los Angeles; Christopher Horejsi of Paso Robles; Bill Potts (Tiffany) of Eugene, Oregon, John Leonard (Lisa) of Reno, NV; God daughters Ashley Borja (Terry) of Alexandria, Virginia and Alyssa Leadingham (Brian) of Carmel Valley. Inlaws Mike and Carolynne Potts, David, Jason and Kimberly Potts, all of Paso Robles; dear friends Mark and Rhonda Beathard of San Diego; Steve and Denisse Pierce, their twins Steven and Sofia of Paso Robles; and so many more friends and loved ones who he inspired and left an indelible impression on. A Celebration of David’s Life will take place on at 11:00am on Friday, February 7, 2020 at Kuehl-Nicolay, 1703 Spring Street, Paso Robles, CA. All are welcome to attend and share their favorite memories of Dave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the CAHP Widows and Orphans Trust Fund in his name. Mighty Fun Awaits Munchkins

Indoor play zone offers a safe and clean environment in Paso Robles Mighty Munchkins Indoor Playzone celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open-play session at its location at 715 6th St. in Paso Robles. The family-friendly event offered playtime for children ages infant to 5 years old. The ceremony was organized in partnership with the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce and the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce and featured special guest City Councilwoman Maria Elena Garcia. Mighty Munchkins Playzone is a local and family-owned business creating a safe play space for children. The play area offers families the opportunity to engage in fun activities that promote exercise and safety as children work on their coordination and fine motor skills. The recently renovated space features brightly colored soft-play arches, blocks, pads, slides, and ball pits that are foam-padded and specifically-designed for crawlers to toddlers and preschoolers. Mighty Munchkins also offers another set of the play equipment as a party rental for events throughout San Luis Obispo County. The company was founded first as a rental service for children’s parties in February 2019 by Paso Robles mom Gabriela Tapar. As a parent of an active toddler, Gabriela invested in the soft play equipment for her son Nico at home as a way to keep him actively engaged in play while also being safe. “I loved the effect it had on my son so much, that I decided to share it with the community,” she said. Soon, Gabriela was booking rentals for the play equipment at more and more parties and local events such as the Atascadero Fourth of July Bluegrass Freedom Festival and the Califor-

nia Mid-State Fair. “At that point, I knew the Mighty Munchkins equipment provided a much-needed play space for local kiddos,” Gabriela said. “So I decided to offer a second set of play equipment in a dedicated play area location in Paso Robles.” And thus, Mighty Munchkins Indoor Playzone was born. Mighty Munchkins Soft Play Equipment Rentals are also still available. The playzone itself is also available to reserve as a rental space for private parties. The indoor play area also offers special sessions for open play, storytime. kids yoga, craft and sensory time and much more. Puzzles, blocks, and toys designed to improve fine motor skills are also available in the back. Parents are welcome to play with their kids or have the choice to relax in a special seating area in the front of the space, complete with a charging station for cell phones. Socks are required for the play equipment. Parents know that physical activity is good for all ages. However, physical activity at Mighty Munchkins offers benefits for young children and toddlers to play and learn at the same time! That’s because soft-play encourages gross motor development where kids can work on stepping, climbing, crawling, jumping and rolling. Having an open space with good sensory lighting can provide just the sensory-motor diet needed to move and learn. With movement can come speech and language skills as well as education. Fine motor skills involve the use of the small muscles that control their hands and fingers. Fine motor skills will develop and improve as kids move through childhood. members. Adding to the staffing hours cost, the City must pay up to $15,000 to the County for printing the Measure and its facts on the actual ballots. If the feasibility study shows that a new sales tax will most likely lose a popular vote, then the City will not spend the additional cost of putting the item on the ballot. According to City Manager, Rachelle Rickard, a half-cent sales tax would generate $2 million for the City annually. A half-cent sales tax means shoppers pay an additional $0.50 for every $100 spent. “The fire station needs a huge overall,” said Christensen. The money would not go toward promotional expenses such as fireworks for the tamale festival. Incidentally, the fireworks cost $5,000 and received funding from money

previously earmarked for promotional services. Cities on the Central Coast do not generate a sizeable amount from property taxes. The City’s Talk on the Block Report stated that of the $3,500 property tax, the City garners $494 while the County’s cut is $579 and schools get the lion’s share of $2,146. And Being a bedroom community — meaning people live here and shop elsewhere — Atascadero generates only $119 in sales tax per capita while its nearest neighbor, Paso, generates $538. The City of Atascadero generates the least amount of tax dollars per capita than any of the incorporated cities in the County. According to the City’s 2016-2017 Fiscal Year Report, Atascadero generates $657 per capita in tax dollars, where Grover Beach (the second-lowest) produces $693 and Paso Robles creates $1,250 per year. said that the company has created significant change in the downtown Atascadero area with its “beautiful La Plaza Project.” “This local, family business was not only selected for their contribution to the commercial sector,” Moreno said. “They’re active in our community, donating time and financial resources to many of our nonprofits. Z-Villages exemplifies the type of business that makes Atascadero flourish. Joanna and Shane Wemple were recognized

passed away in July at the age of 83. Bonnie Wilkins served as Atascadero’s first “First Lady” when her husband Bob Wilkins was elected as the City’s first mayor in 1979 Bob and Bonnie were honored as the Colony Days King and Queen in 2003. She was also a charter member of Quota Club International of Atascadero and was very active in the organization. There will be two gates installed at the Colony House Museum and four installed at the Colony Heritage Center. Designed by local artist Mark Greenaway, the gates will have a naturalistic look, incorporating flowers and vines and plenty of color, Wilkins said. The gates will be made from the deodar cedar trees that were removed from around Atascadero City Hall prior to its reconstruction. The historical society had the trees turned into lumber

a severe financial blow to cities. The lack of big-box stores such as Target or Walmart also hinders Atascadero’s ability to generate revenue to fund city services. However, according to Rickard, shopping locally may not be enough to help Atascadero, at least not in the short term. In November, Rickard told the Council that a “new, nice, big restaurant” would optimally bring in up to $30,000 a year, and a big-box retail store such as Walmart would generate $500,000 annually. The latter makes only an additional $16 per capita. Still, if Atascadero residents deny a sales tax, it does not mean that neighboring cities will do the same. “If other cities are also looking at a sales tax increase and our residents do a majority of their shopping outside of the City,” said Christensen, “…they are now helping to fund additional services in these cities where those services are then not being funded in our city.”

as the Entrepreneurs of the Year for turning an old gas station into the Colony Market and Deli. “They took a big risk and turned a previously blighted property into a thriving community hub,” Moreno said. Introducing Terrie Banish, the 2019 Citizen of the Year, Moreno said that the part she played in hiring Banish as a deputy city manager at the City of Atascadero was “one of the best decisions I ever made.” “And we will never be the same,” she added. “Terrie goes beyond the call of duty, applying her entrepreneurial and marketing skills to build the City of Atascadero and Visit Atascadero brands.

and has been saving the wood for these past few years, saving it for something special. Wilkins said that construction on the gates probably won’t begin for another eight weeks or so because historical society members are currently busy with a few other projects at the Colony Heritage Center including the installation of a sheer panel at the Archival House, preparations for a foundation slab at the Boy Scout Cabin and preparations for the installation of electricity at the site. Wilkins said that he’s not sure how much money will need to be raised for the memory walk project, but those interested in supporting it will be able to buy brick pavers engraved with the name of a loved one that will be installed along the path. He said that supporters have already donated $2-3K toward the project. “People are excited about it,” he said. “It’s going to be very artistic.”

the new rules went into effect, most of them to juveniles in possession of tobacco products in the downtown area, and most of them issued by himself personally. “For a couple of months, we were having a problem with some juveniles who were engaging in some behaviors that were unsavory to say the least and disruptive to businesses in the area, so we did take enforcement actions in a couple of cases,” he said. “It seems to have been effective in clearing out the problems and remedying the situation for our business owners.” Haley said that the smoking ban has been “an effective tool” in eliminating the “unsavory” behaviors happening downtown and the subsequent complaints from business owners and residents. “It’s an effective tool and we’ve had good success with it and I think it was wise to implement,” he said.

As a strong collaborator and a ‘roll up your sleeves and get it done’ kind of person. Terrie has worked tirelessly to create and improve a number of events, branding them and making them iconic to Atascadero.” The 2018 Citizen of the Year, Jeanie Malik, called Banish a “shining star in our community.” “She was not only the People’s Choice at Atascadero’s Dancing With Our Stars, but also a role model for kindness, integrity and brilliance, bringing innovative events to our city. Terrie’s incorporation of Dancing in the Streets and the Tamale Festival put Atascadero on the map for California tourism.”

Banish is a San Miguel resident but she said that her family can attest that she spends most of her time in Atascadero. “I never thought I’d be up here today,” Banish said. “I don’t think I’m worthy of this but I gratefully accept.” Banish named a long list of people who she said helped to support her along the way and bring her vision for Atascadero to life. “This work was only possible because of Atascadero’s amazingly terrific business community and our residents,” she said. “It’s been a privilege to work for and will all of you and I will continue to strive to promote our wonderful city.”

Hares N Hounds Takes 22nd Lap

The original Atascadero Greyhound Foundation fundraiser has a marathoner’s legs

By NICHOLAS MATTSON NORTH COUNTY — Hares N Hounds 5K was the first fundraiser formed under the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation, and celebrated its 21th year in 2019. Race director Robyn Schmidt has led the effort for the past 15 years. “I have had some of the same volunteers and group leaders, ” S c hmidt said. “Dave Fleishman has done the timing, and we have a lot of teachers who have helped with food and registration. Dave Donati and Vic Cooper has managed the

finish line. We have some great teacher volunteers who step up because they know the money comes back to the kids through scholarships.” Historically, the event began as a fundraiser for the Atascadero High School all-weather track that stood for many years as the best track in the county and still plays host to some of the most important track and field events at the high school level. After the track was completed, the Hares N Hounds became a community fundraiser that allowed groups to secure commit-

ments from supporters who sponsored the 5K racers. The high school baseball team and distance running teams raised much-needed funds through the event. Being scheduled on the first Saturday of March each year, weather is always a factor, but that hasn’t scared off most runners over the past few years and happy finishers ran through the finishing chute, sometimes drenched from a downpour. Each year, it is a new story as Mother Nature decides how to manage her weekends, but rain or shine the event goes on — kind of like the community it supports. A treat for attendees is the custom-made “medals” and finisher awards. In the past, hand-made pine rounds and ceramic medals have been used as winner’s adornments. “It ’s always something hand-made for the winners of the race,” Schmidt said. The 5K runs a course around the Atascadero Lake, through the hills of Portola

Avenue and back again. For the less adventurous, the event hosts 1-mile and 1/2-mile races. Pre-registration is open now at active.com, and registration information can be found at atascadero-

Lake, and the 5K race starts at 8 a.m. sharp. The 1-mile race starts at 8:45 a.m. and the 1/2-mile follows at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony takes place at 9:30 a.m. at the Atascadero Lake Band Stand.

Templeton offense, down two starters, overpowers Atascadero By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascadernews.com TEMPLETON — Templeton and Atascadero faced off for the second and final time this season on Tuesday night, Jan. 21, as the Greyhounds tried to avenge their home loss on Dec. 17 but could not generate enough offense to fly with the injured Eagles and fell 60-45. The Templeton team came out of the locker room for warmups all wearing “Braden Crew” T-shirts in support of Bearcat junior Braden Waterman who was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma on Jan. 3. Several of the players on the team played basketball with Waterman growing up and wanted to wear the shirts to support him. It was the Eagles second straight game without returning second-team all-league selection CONTINUED ON PAGE B12

By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com PASO ROBLES — Friday night featured the final game between the Paso Robles and Atascadero girls soccer teams and it was the Bearcats who came out on top 1-0, avenging their 1-0 overtime loss from two weeks ago. Both the Greyhounds and the Bearcats entered this game on a bit of a skid and looking to right the ship against the rivals. Paso Robles entered the game riding a four-game losing streak that started on Jan. 9 with a pair of heartbreakers to Arroyo Grande and Atascadero. On Jan. 9 the girls in crimson battled the Eagles (6-1), who are tied in first with San Luis Paso Robles sophomore Hope McCarthy celebrates with her teammates Obispo, in a crazy back and forth second after scoring the lone goal in Friday’s victory at War Memorial Stadium. Eagles Sweep Pirates Merran Grindley scores six goals against rivals

By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com TEMPLETON — The Templeton Eagles girls soccer team bounced back to their winning ways on Wednesday night, defeating the Morro Bay Pirates 3-0 and completing the season sweep of their rivals. A little over a week ago the Eagles played the Pirates for the first time in league this season and powered past them on the strength of Merran Grindley’s legs. Grindley earned a hat trick, plus one, in the first half of their 5-1 victory. Wednesday night, Templeton hosted their leg of the rivalry and again cruised to a win with reigning Ocean League player of the Year, Grindley, scoring two more goals.

“Dot [Nickel], their goalkeeper, is one of my really good friends,” Grindley said. “She plays on my club team so just having that competition with her, it excites me. I always talk to her during the game and will tell her, usually when she saves my goals, ‘That was a great save, Dot. Good job,’ but even when it’s not my goals too.” The runaway league champions from a year ago have been hot and cold this season and currently sit in fourth place in the Ocean League at 2-3 behind Nipomo (5-1), Orcutt Academy (4-1) and Santa Maria (4-2). While the girls have struggled to find their Templeton junior Merran Grindley scores one of her two offense this season it seems they have the Pirates goals against Morro Bay Wednesday night. SCHEDULE

We save you Time, Gas & Money ATASCADERO

here have only been three events in my life that I can really, vividly remember where I was when they happened and they are all centered around tragedies. Of course, the first one is Sept. 11, 2001, which happened when I was in the fourth grade. At that time, I didn’t have the intellectual competence to really understand the gravity of what had just happened but I remember so clearly the same images being on every TV channel and that struck me. The next time I remember every TV seeming to be on the same channel was in 2009 when Michael Jackson died. I was a junior in high school at the time (I am 27 for those of you doing math on your fingers at home) and while I was old enough to appreciate Michael Jackson, loved all his music, and went out and immediately bought his greatest hits album, it still didn’t have quite as profound an effect on me as the passing of Kobe and Gigi Bryant as well as the Altobelli family and all the others in the crash. I was standing on the putting green at Dairy Creek Golf Course on Sunday morning when I found out about the news. My phone started vibrating off the hook like the gadget that tells you your table is ready at Olive Garden and just like everyone else, I was convinced it was a hoax because he always seemed larger than life, nearly untouchable. Kobe entered the league in 1996 and won his first title in 2000. I was born in 1992. Growing up just three short hours from Staples Center during the prime Kobe Era would lead you to believe that there was not just one basketball team in LA but only one basketball team in California. His influence was ubiquitous.

With more than five decades of touring, The Beach Boys are American musical icons.

Picking up some good vibrations CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE PASO ROBLES — As The Beach Boys mark more than a half-century of making music, the group continues to ride the crest of a wave unequaled in America’s musical history. The Beach Boys have become synonymous with the California lifestyle and have become American icons to fans around the world. The Beach Boys will pull into town to perform on July 5 at the Vina Robles Amphitheater in Paso Robles. Since lead-singer Mike Love penned the lyrics to The Beach Boys’ first hit, “Surfin’” (1961), dozens of the band’s chart-toppers have become eternal anthems of American youth: “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfer Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Barbara Ann,” “Good Vibrations,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Rock and Roll Music” and “Kokomo.” The Beach Boys have sold more than 100 million records worldwide and have received more than 33

RIAA Platinum and Gold record awards. The Rock And Roll Hall of Famers were also honored at the 2001 Grammy Awards with the Lifetime Achievement Award. With more than five decades of touring under their belts, The Beach Boys have performed more concerts than any major rock band in history. “Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys,” Capitol/EMI’s 30-track collection of the band ’s biggest hits, has achieved triple-platinum success with sales of more than three million copies in the U.S. since its release. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love, who, along with longtime member Bruce Johnston, musical director Scott Totten, Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Keith Hubacher and Randy L eago continue the legacy of the iconic band. This concert will not feature Brian Wilson, Al Jardine or David Marks.

MORRO BAY — The Morro Bay Plein Air Festival is open to professional and non-professional artists of all skill levels. We invite the public to watch the art evolve before their eyes, to participate in the evening activities and to purchase beautiful wet paint art pieces in silent and live auction fun. Art Center Morro Bay, Morro Bay Tourism and Inn at Morro Bay have joined forces to present the inaugural Morro Bay Plein Air Festival, scheduled for April 13–16. There are many ways to participate. Watch art demonstrations, take the two-day workshop, register to participate in the all-day “paint out,” enter a quick draw contest, attend a VIP party with silent and live auctions! There will be awards and r ibbons for Paint O ut and Quick Draw participants, silent and live auctions. What is Plein Air? Plein Air means leaving the four walls of an indoor studio and painting in the wide-open outdoors. This style of painting was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists with their desire to paint light and its ever-changing ephemeral qualities. This allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.”

Day 1: Students will work on a still-life of choice while painting outdoors to capture the complexity of color working in sunlight. There will be an introduction and theoretical instruction followed by a demo, then students will paint. Day 2: Students will paint a plein air landscape at a specified location in Morro Bay. A full landscape demo will be provided. Guido Frick will circulate giving personal instruction. At the end of each session, he will critique your work and give individual ideas and personalized help. REGISTER FOR PAINT OUT APRIL 16, 8 A.M. – 2 P.M.

Spend the day at the plein air Paint Out, starting with a continental breakfast at Art Center Morro Bay. Registered painters will get their canvas stamped, pick up a swag bag, enjoy breakfast and head off to designated locations throughout Morro Bay to paint “en plein air” until 2 p.m. when the party moves to the Inn at Morro Bay located in Morro Bay State Park where the framed, wet paintings will be turned in by 3 p.m. for judging, awards and a silent auction.

VIP PARTY, QUICK DRAW, PAINT OUT AWARDS, AND SILENT & LIVE AUCTIONS AT THE INN AT MORRO BAY, FREE: PLEIN AIR ART DEMONS T R A - APRIL 16, 4–8:30 P.M. TION WITH INTERNATIONAL ARTIST The VIP Party kicks this afternoon off & INSTRUCTOR GUIDO FRICK APRIL 13, with live music, wine and light refreshments 3-5 P.M. along with a sneak peek and silent auction

Don’t miss this art demonstration by international artist, Guido Frick at Art Center Morro Bay. Born in Konstanz, Germany, Frick studied art in Prague Czechoslovakia. Frick teaches his Impressionistic style throughout Europe and the western United States. Capturing the mood with oil and watercolor he approaches each subject with bold and vigorous brushwork, using brilliant color. This event is free and open to the public.

pre-bids of completed Paint Out works. Then this party rolls right into a Quick Draw competition throughout the elegant Inn at Morro Bay. Painters will set-up in various pre-selected locations. From there, the excitement continues with awards, prizes and a live auction of the Quick Draw works of art. Don’t miss this fun event! Pre-registration is required for the Quick Draw and recommended for all other events.

THEATER

BY THE SEA PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS ‘THE ODD COUPLE’ Broadway classic turned film comes home to the stage

Ed Cardoza (left) and Tim Linzey (right) truly bring their characters to life By JANICE PETERS MORRO BAY — By the Sea Productions’ opening show of its 2020 season is Neil Simon’s comedy classic “The Odd Couple,” directed by Lisa Woske. This beloved-comedy opens as a group of guys assemble for cards in the messy apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed, and all too tense, Felix seems suicidal…but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results.

When ”The Odd Couple” appeared on Broadway in 1965, Simon was already a well-known playwright, with hit plays “Come Blow Your Horn” and “Barefoot in the Park.” But ”The Odd Couple” — with its unforgettable pair of mismatched roommates — made Simon a cultural phenomenon and he became the most commercially successful playwright in the history of theatre. “The Odd Couple” was nominated for a 1965 “Best Play” Tony Award and Simon won the Tony that year for Best Author of a Play. After its lengthy run on Broadway, ”The Odd Couple” was turned into a successful film starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, and a popular TV series with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall. Simon

also wrote a female version, which starred Rita Moreno and Sally Struthers. Both versions have remained audience favorites over the years. “The Odd Couple” features Ed Cardoza as Oscar and Tim Linzey as Felix. The poker players are Hank Wethington, Brett Mermer, Dan Costley and David Rousseve, and the Pigeon Sisters are played by Jenny Beck and Sarah Smith. “The Odd Couple” opened Jan. 24, and plays weekends through Feb. 16, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and Sunday Matinees at 3 p.m. Tickets are available online at bytheseaproductions.org, or call 805-776-3287, or at the door, at 545 Shasta Ave., Morro Bay.

SLO Repertory Theatre Brings Musical Legend to Life With ‘Always... Patsy Cline’ Celebrated juke box musical opens Feb. 7 SAN LUIS OBISPO — San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre will kick off the second half of its 2019-2020 Season with “Always...Patsy Cline.” Created and originally directed by Ted Swindley, “Always...Patsy Cline” is a true story about Cline’s friendship with Louise Seger, a fan from Houston who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her tragic death in 1963. Featuring a live band on the intimate SLO REP stage, funny and often poignant tales of Patsy’s life on the road are told with down-home country humor and brought to life through music and even some audience participation. The show includes more than two dozen of Patsy Cline’s biggest hits, including “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” and “Sweet Dreams”. Much more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically in a plane crash in 1963, “Always...Patsy Cline keeps this longtime friendship center-stage and takes audiences through the ups and downs of Patsy’s career, from her breakthrough on live radio, to her rise to fame at the Grand Ole Opry. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s” letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS... Patsy Cline.” The show runs Feb. 7 – March 8 with performances Wednesdays through Sundays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. SLO REP is located at 888 Morro Street, right next to City Hall, in downtown San Luis Obispo. Ticket prices range from $40-$55 and are available at slorep.org or by calling (805) 786-2440. ABOUT THE CAST AND CREW “Always...Patsy Cline” is directed by Kevin Harris with musical direction by Wendy Feaver and choreography by Andrew Silvaggio. Greta Kleckner will take on the role of Patsy Cline and Louise Seger will be played by Suzy Newman. Our Sweet Dreams Band, aka the Bodacious Bobcats, features band leader and music director Wendy Feaver on keys, John Clarke on steel guitar, James Gallardo on bass, Gary Wooten on lead guitar, Paul Lee on fiddle, and Evan Goldhahn on drums. Scenic design is by David Linfield, costume design is by Randon Pool, sound and lighting design is by Kevin Harris. The production’s stage manager is Amanda Johnson. Barbara Schultz to Speak at Warbirds Dinner PASO ROBLES — Barbara Schultz, a well-respected researcher and writer in the field of aviation, will be the guest speaker at the Estrella Warbird Museum February monthly dinner on Feb. 5. She has written several aviation history books — “Pancho: The Biography of Florence Lowe Barnes;” “Wedell-Williams Air Service;” “Flying Carpets,” “Flying Wings: The Biography of Moye W. Stephens;” “Endorsed by Earhart: How Amelia Financed Her Flying;” and “Pioneering Aviation in Kern County.” She is also a contributor to the American Aviation Historical Society Journal and participant in several aviation documentaries, as well as a former trustee for the 99s Museum of Women Pilots in Oklahoma City. Always looking for a challenge, a good friend suggested to Barbara Schultz that she learn to fly. When she returned from a three month overland trip to South America, she headed out to Fox Field in Lancaster to become a pilot — not having any idea what that entailed. After Bill Barnes, Pancho’s son, gave her an introductory flight, she told him it was far from being introductory, it would be her first lesson. She was assigned an instructor by Shouling Barnes, Bill’s wife, and told she needed to take a written exam if she ever wanted to get a pilot’s license. Not realizing she could actually take a class, she took the FAA manual back to her cabin in Lake Hughes, studied, and passed the test with flying colors. The hard part was learning that she was the one in control in the cockpit, not the airplane, and many, many hours passed before she soloed. Cross-countries were exciting, and sometimes she didn’t read

the map quite right, but figured she would eventually find her way — which obviously she did. Words like “confident” and “pride” resonated when she remembered the day Bill Barnes signed off on her check ride. In addition to becoming a pilot at Fox Field Airport, she met her future husband, Phil Schultz, who was just finishing up a restoration on his 1931 Stinson. Part of this meeting was encouraged by Shouling. “You should meet Mr. Schultz; he’s a very nice man — flies jets and sees the world.” Phil and Barbara married, had two sons, and found property on which to establish an airport. Little Buttes Antique Airpark near Lancaster is her home where she and her family have several aircraft, a 1958 Beech 18, 1969 Bonanza V35A, and 1969 Cessna 150. Their projects are restoring Barbara’s 1950 Cessna 140A, a J-3 Cub, and a 1931 Stinson Jr. owned by their oldest son. A recently purchased 1943 Howard 250 is undergoing an annual. Reservations can be made by calling the Museum at 805 296-1935 or online at ewarbirds.org/museum/reservatrions. shtml. Deadline for reservations is 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3. Price for the dinner is $20 per person. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a no host bar (cash only, no credit cards), and the catered dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Estrella Warbird Museum is located at 4251 Dry Creek Road in Paso Robles. The museum is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Call for Monday holiday hours. For general admission information, call 805 238-9317 or visit ewarbirds.org.

Gary Eberle Donates to Local Nonprofits

Gary Eberle was proud to recently present three checks today totaling more than $8,600 to local nonprofit organizations. Representatives from Seneca Family of Agencies formerly known as the Kinship Center, Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation, and the Central Coast Honor Flight gathered to accepted the generous donations collected from various events we have hosted over the past few months.

junior Xander Shaw and third straight game without starter Nate Mututwa, both of whom have been out with injuries and could be out for the remainder of the season. But they still cruised to victory thanks to a huge second quarter both offensively and defensively. Templeton entered the game after dropping their last two games to Morro Bay and Pioneer Valley and was led through a strong group effort of two seniors: Evan Asplund (who led all scorers with 17 points), Mitchell Savory-Orton and junior Merek Hall. The Greyhounds entered the game splitting their last four games with two league wins over Santa Maria and Orcutt Academy and a pair

of losses to Morro Bay (who currently sits in first in league at 6-0) and Nipomo, who shares second in the Ocean with the Templeton Eagles at 5-2. Atascadero is currently in third place at 3-4 in league. Since adding him late in the year, senior guard Zyon Richardson has helped inject the Hounds with some instant offense and showed his explosiveness time and time again on Tuesday night, getting to the rim with ease. The game started off close as both teams traded baskets in the early minutes trying to feel each other out. Even though the two teams have played each other once this season they both have different starting lineups and contributors this time around. Templeton jumped out to a 7-3 lead but the Hounds shot their way back into the game thanks

to three-point shooting and nice ball movement. After one quarter, Templeton was up three points, 17-14. The second quarter is where the game turned. Hall opened the quarter hitting back-to-back three-pointers and the Eagles tightened their defense like a vice. The Hounds didn’t get their first points in the second quarter until only two minutes remained. Atascadero head coach Augie Johnston turned to his bench and the senior Richardson who came in and scored Atascadero’s only four points in the second but by that time the Templeton lead had ballooned to 15. The Eagles went into halftime up 33-18 and never looked back. “Our bench had to play big with some injuries to key players, and boy did they,” Templeton head coach Andrew Cherry said. “Before the game, we

number and might have them to thank for reigniting the offense. “We have been hot and cold ourselves so this was a game where we played well and passed well but it was very unlike the game we played in Santa Maria,” Templeton head coach Mario Perez said. “We were successful against them the first time and when we went down there we just had one of those games. It felt good to get back to winning and I think we are starting to do some of the things that we have been working on in practice.” For the first ten minutes of the game, both teams took turns controlling the possessions and making runs into opposing territory but neither could capitalize. However, The Eagles speed outside with Grindley, Lauryn Simons and Emily Puita started presenting problems in the first half as both Grindley and Puita just barely missed goals. With about nine minutes to go in the half, Perez made a substitution, bringing in senior Megan Ingle. Three minutes later, Ingle found the ball at her feet with nothing but the keeper in front of her and scored to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead. “I like playing against Morro Bay,” Ingle said. “Obviously they are our rivals and that pumps everybody up and we all want to beat them so everyone plays hard and it makes for really exciting games.” The Pirates might have controlled more of the possessions through the first half but it was the Eagles’ deadly counter-attacks that kept everything even until halftime. After a brief chat with their coach at halftime, the Templeton girls took over in the second half. Grindley scored her first goal of the night just ten minutes into the half to extend the lead to 2-0. She notched her third after Simons drew a foul in the penalty area and Grindley finished it with her left leg giving her six goals in her last three games. “I think I have finally found my rhythm,” Grindley said with a sly smile. “So I am happy with myself and I don’t know, I just have Morro Bay to thank for that.” Next up, the Eagles will travel to first-place Nipomo on Friday and will host Orcutt Academy on Tuesday night. Three of the last four games against the Spartans have needed overtime to be decided.

half that saw five goals surrendered after none were scored in the first 40 minutes of game. But it was AG who squeaked out the 3-2 victory. The Greyhounds entered Friday’s game having dropped

three of their last four games with their lone victory coming over the Bearcats. Atascadero’s lone problem during their skid has been their ability to generate offense and execute and finish in the final third. Atascadero has only tallied two goals in their last six games but have only surren-

talked about opportunities and how they come sometimes when we don’t expect them. Also, how we have to face adversity in sports like we are with injuries right now. They rose to the challenge and I couldn’t be more proud.” Friday night the Eagles will have a huge game in terms of Ocean League standings when they head to Nipomo to take on the Titans, with whom they are currently tied for second place. Friday’s game will kick off a three-game road trip for the Eagles with all three heading into Santa Barbara county. The Greyhounds have two very winnable games sitting in front of them in Pioneer Valley and Santa Maria. Should the Hounds win both, they could find themselves in second place with a shot at the league championship if several things break their way.

dered eight over that same time period. Friday night’s game at War Memorial Stadium played out very similar to the game in Atascadero just two weeks prior as both teams battled in the midfield but stout defense kept the offenses from generating many quality looks at the goal. After 30 minutes of soccer gridlock, the field finally began to open up and the first real scoring opportunity came to the Bearcats in the 33rd minute when they earned a corner kick and senior Jordan Bullard strolled into the box. The pass from the corner sailed over a few Greyhounds and a leaping Bullard headed the ball out of the air but sent it just high over the crossbar. Fol lowing the Hounds goal kick, Atascadero freshman Bella Valentine streaked down the sideline showing her speed and crossed it into the box but it was the Bearcats keeper Hannah Lowry who came down with the ball and started the counter attack back the other direction. With just four minutes to go in the first half, Paso Robles sophomore Hope McCarthy, who had just checked into the game a few minutes prior, found herself under the ball as it bounced over a Grey-

hound defender and fired it into the goal for the only score of the night and the eventual game-winner. “It bounced over the girls and I just saw an opportunity to hit it and I was hoping it would go somewhat on target,” McCarthy said. “And it ended up going in and slipping right past the keeper.” The Atascadero versus Paso games feel a little bit different in girls soccer. While most kids grow up competing against local kids from neighboring cities, the soccer community largely knows one another due to the club teams in the area. So many of the girls in orange and crimson uniforms have worn the same colors in the past. “It was really nice to score against my (former) teammates,” McCarthy said. Following the game both teams gathered at midfield and exchanged hugs, smiles and photos. Paso Robles opened up the second half with what looked like to many as a second goal. The ball bounced off the crossbar and into a scrum between Greyhound defenders and Bearcat forwards and eventually ended up in the back of the net but was waived off by the official. Atascadero generated their best scoring opportunity in the second half when do-it-all

it’s wrong. Mistakes are what make us all human and what often lead to incredible personal growth. For Kobe, it is what I admire above all else, even ahead of the work ethic. Since certain accusations were leveled against him in 2003 — which I don’t think we need to go into any deeper at this time — he has pivoted into a devoted father of four girls. I felt like in the interviews it all really hit him and at that point, he started doing things differently. For the last three years, when I think of Kobe, I think of him and Gigi sitting courtside. I think about the interview with Jimmy Kimmel where he talks about her continuing the legacy and the confidence with which he said it. I think about

the stories of him coaching her basketball teams to championships and that one girl getting in trouble because she missed a game. I think one thing we can all learn and take away from Kobe is that he knew above all else what mattered to him and he made sure to be the best at whatever that was. For him, it was first basketball and then it was family. Moments like these remind us all of our mortality that marches ever closer as the seconds on the clock tick by. We never know when our last chance to see a loved one could be so I encourage everyone to take some time in the next week to think about who and what really matter to you and pursue those things like they are the only thing.

defender Anneline Breytenbach made a long run down the visitors sidelines and crossed a perfect ball into the box but was cleared out of danger without the Hounds getting a shot off. “I am proud of them,” Paso Robles head coach Dillon Simoulis said. “I feel like they played a solid 80 minutes and played with a ton of effort and never gave up. They really had a lot of morale coming off of four losses — that is a tough thing to do. So to get the win and just play as hard as they did, I was really proud of that.” Both the Hounds and the Bearcats have three games remaining this year and will look to make the most of them as they make a push for the postseason. Atascadero is currently 7-7-2 overall but 2-5 and in fourth place in a brutal Mountain League. Atascadero will play the top two teams in league this week on the road before hosting senior night on Feb. 5 against St. Joseph. Paso Robles is 7-11-2 overall and 3-4 in the Ocean League (third place) and will host senior night on Tuesday when they face off against SLO and look to bounce back from the 5-0 loss to the Tigers in their last match. The Bearcats will finish the regular season on the road with back-to-back games against St. Joseph and Righetti.
