Atascadero City Council met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 11, at 6 p.m. The hybrid meeting was held in the City Council Chambers.

The agenda passed unanimously.

Before the Consent Agenda passed, Mayor Pro Tem Susan Funk pulled Item 3, General Plan & Housing Element Annual Progress Report 2022. She gave a little bit more of an update stating that with housing already built and projects that are being built or have been approved that we are close to 78% of what is expected in the eight-year time frame, which is exceeding our current goal at the halfway point. She also stated that we are only behind on very low-income housing, with only four of the 207 units that the state expects our population will need.

“The bottom line is in all the other categories of income, we are substantially exceeding what the targets of the state says our community would need for affordable housing,” concluded Funk.

The Consent Agenda was then passed unanimously.

Deputy City Manager Terrie Banish gave the council a Marketing Update for the 22/23 year. She went over all the events that Atascadero has added and or continued in 2022. ATASCADERO — With Easter just passing and spring break well on its way, Atascadero and its residents have been busy getting out and enjoying the beautiful spring weather while spending time with their families.

On Easter Sunday, April 9, Refuge Church held an outdoor Easter service in Sunken Gardens for anyone in the community to attend. The service started off with a free breakfast at 9 a.m. and was followed by the worship service at 10 a.m.

The Charles Paddock Zoo has been celebrating the arrival of spring with its much-loved Spring Festival. The festival started on April 2 and is

continuing through April 16. During regular opening hours, the festival and all of the additional activities are included with general admission into the zoo.

This year, the festival is downsized while the zoo prepares to switch its focus to featuring pollinators and plans to talk more about the pollination side of spring in

the future instead of featuring baby animals of spring.

Zoo Supervisor Flavia Parotti said they did bring back the adored baby chicks this year because they are always such a big hit with zoo patrons.

“We have another whole week and a half of chicks being here at the zoo,” added Parotti.

The chicks are borrowed

from Atascadero Hay and Feed, where they are returned after their stint at the zoo.

This week the zoo has also been doing scheduled animal feeding for the public along with zookeeper talks. Thursday at 11 a.m., you can see the Aldabra tortoises eat, and on Friday they will be feeding the tiger.

Supervisors Approve New SLO County Ag Pass Program

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — County supervisors gave the green light for a new SLO County Ag Pass Program last week. The program allows agricultural producers to undergo training and potentially be allowed access to their farms and ranches during a wildfire or other natural disaster.

SLO County developed a local Ag Pass program in 2021, but the state legislature created new standards for county ag pass programs with passage of AB-1103 later that year. In coming months, the SLO County Agriculture Commissioner’s office will be announcing training dates and application

SLO County Fire Department has developed an approximately four-hour curriculum that will provide a primer on basic fire behavior, communications during disaster, and incident command structure (ICS). Ag Pass authorization cards will be valid for two years. Additionally, shorter, “refresher” training will be made available online at Ag Pass card renewal time.

Who is eligible for an Ag Pass?

For the initial program rollout, no more than three (3) individuals from any agricultural operation (not each individual site of the operation) will be eligible to obtain an Ag Pass. The purpose of the Ag Pass is to potentially allow an agriculturalist access to his or her farm or ranch for limited emergency response activities to protect or care for agricultural assets only. It is not a pathway that allows for normal agricultural operations or activities (i.e. harvesting, packing, planting, etc.).

—  On Friday, March 24, San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office, San Luis Obispo County Probation Department, San Luis Obispo Defenders, Restorative Partners, People’s Justice Project, California Rural Legal Assistance, and San Luis Obispo College of Law hosted a free legal Clean Slate Clinic for San Luis Obispo County residents for criminal record expungement, felony reduction, and arrest record sealing at the SLO County Law Library.

During the clinic, San Luis Obispo County-based volunteer defense attorneys and law students analyzed indi-

vidual criminal records and prepared expungement and felony reduction petitions for more than 150 San Luis Obispo County residents with nearly 300 cases. Following the submission of all petitions to San Luis Obispo County deputy district attorneys and probation officers for review, it was determined that more than 100 petitions seeking expungement would not be opposed by the prosecution.

The purpose of the Clean Slate Clinic is to help eliminate a barrier to employment and housing for individuals who have criminal records. A criminal record

— no matter how old or how minor

— can be a significant barrier to re-entry for people when most employers, property managers and universities use background checks to screen applicants.

4. The Applicant is key personnel of the oper-

ation that has a working knowledge of the agricultural property, including access to irrigation systems, farm equipment, and other essential infrastructure.

5. The Applicant and employer (if different than the Applicant) must sign a waiver and release. An Ag Pass eligibility committee (“Committee”) organized by the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office will be responsible for confirming eligibility based on the above criteria. The Committee will be composed of representatives from the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, County Fire, Sherriff’s Office, Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, Fire Safe Council and UC Cooperative Extension.

Slate Clinic Serves Over 150 People

Record clearance is crucial to ensuring that the collateral consequences that stem from a criminal record are eliminated or significantly reduced for the millions of individuals trying to rebuild their lives toward a successful future. Criminal record expungement confers numerous benefits for individuals convicted of certain misdemeanors and felonies. When applying for a job, individuals who successfully expunge their criminal record can lawfully answer “no” if asked whether they have been convicted of a crime. Moreover, an employer is not permitted to consider

an expunged conviction that is discovered through a background check in making a hiring decision.

Expungement also benefits those seeking state professional licenses. To be sure, even after an expungement in many circumstances, an individual must disclose a conviction in response to a question posed in an application for a state license (e.g., a contractor license or real estate license) or in an application for public office. However, many licensing agencies are more likely to look favorably upon individuals who have successfully completed probation and whose convictions have been expunged. Further, under California law, “a person shall not be denied a license on the basis of any conviction, or on the basis of any acts underlying the conviction” if the conviction has been dismissed.

The California Policy Lab estimates nearly 1 in every 8 Californians with a criminal record is potentially eligible to obtain a full criminal record expungement; 81 percent of Californians with a criminal record are estimated to be eligible to have at least one prior arrest or conviction expunged.

The SLO Clean Slate Clinic will be recurring every quarter-year, with the next one scheduled for Friday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the SLO County Law Library located at 1050 Monterey Street # 125, San Luis Obispo.

Detectives Investigating Fatal Train vs. Pedestrian Collision in Paso Robles

Detectives are working to identify a man who was struck and killed by an Amtrack on Tuesday, April 11.

Just after 2 p.m., the Paso Robles Police Department received information that a pedestrian was struck by a southbound Amtrak passenger train near the 2800 block of Riverside Avenue.

When police officers arrived on the scene, they located a White male adult who was deceased from injuries sustained from the collision. Paso Robles Police detectives were able to retrieve surveillance video of the incident, which is currently under review. The victim has not been positively identified at this time, and the San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s coroner has been notified.

This is an ongoing investigation, and the Paso Robles Police Department is requesting anyone with any information to call the PRPD at (805) 237-6464 or persons wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers’ 24-hour hotline at (805) 549-STOP or by texting “SLOTIPS” plus your message” to CRIMES (274637).

State Restrictions Lifted from Nacimiento Water Project

A new order from the California State Water Board gives Nacimiento Water participants — including the City of Paso Robles, Templeton Community Services District, Atascadero Mutual Water Company, and the City of San Luis Obispo — freedom to decide how to use their water within San Luis Obispo county without violating state restrictions.

Since the 1950s, state permitting limited the County of San Luis Obispo to applying Nacimiento water to up to 7,000 acres of urban and suburban land and 500 acres of agricultural land. That put the county in a tough spot, because the combined usage by Nacimiento participants consistently exceeded those allotments. Further complicating the issue was the fact that Monterey County officially holds the permit, and any fix would require Monterey County to submit the request to the State Water Board.

“This new order from the State Water Board is a monumental day for water resources in San Luis Obispo county and the culmination of years of hard work,” said Public Works Director John Diodati.

“I would like to thank Monterey County for considering the unique issues in our county and working with us as a collaborative partner, and the State Water Board for understanding how beneficial this change would be to the water agencies in San Luis Obispo, particularly the Paso Robles groundwater basin.

I look forward to seeing how water agencies use this opportunity to balance the basin and enhance both the residential and economic needs in our county.”

Lifting the acreage restrictions and changing the permit to being able to use the water anywhere in San Luis Obispo County allows the Nacimiento participants to now better utilize their water by selling what they don’t intend to use on an annual basis. It can be sold to agricultural interests to help with the county’s over-drafted groundwater basins that have to comply with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act.

“Lake Nacimiento is one of few supplemental water sources available to water agencies within SLO County and maximizing its beneficial use is an important step to

improving water availability within the county and management of available water resources,” said Kirk Gonzalez, Paso Robles City Water Resources Manager. “We greatly appreciate the county’s efforts and coordination with Monterey County to make these corrections.”

The Nacimiento Water Project began operations in 2011 after the construction of the $176 million, 45-mile pipeline from Lake Nacimiento to San Luis Obispo was completed. Today, SLO County Public Works staff oversee the operations and management of the pipeline.

Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Paso Robles Police Department will be actively looking for drivers throughout the month who are in violation of the state’s hands-free cell phone law.

According to the 2022 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, nearly 72 percent of drivers surveyed said that distracted driving because of texting was their biggest safety concern. In April of 2022, the Paso Robles Police Department issued 180 total citations alone for distracted driving awareness month.

Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle. This includes talking, texting, or using an app. Using a handheld cellphone while driving is punishable by a fine. Violating the hands-free law for a second time within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to a driver’s record.

If you have an important phone call, text, email, or in a situation with other distractions, pull over to a safe parking spot. Other distractions can be eating, grooming, reaching for something that fell on the floor, putting on or taking off clothing, talking with passengers, or children in the back seat.

Funding for distracted driving enforcement is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

PG&E Launches Major Vegetation Management Project in City Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announces its vegetation management work schedule throughout the City of Atascadero, set to begin late March and continue through early April (weather permitting).

PG&E has contracted Davey Tree to trim over 400 trees in the city right-of-way, in an effort to prevent power outages and reduce the risk of wildfires. All trees are located within the city right-of-way and door hanger notices have been provided to adjacent properties prior to the work commencing.

“At PG&E, the safety and well-being of our customers and communities is our top priority,” said Kimberly McGuire, PG&E’s Vegetation Program Manager. “This vegetation management work will help ensure a safer and more reliable energy supply for the City of Atascadero.”

Ag Official Seeks the Public’s Help in Searching for Detrimental Invasive Insect Pests

The pleasant climate and the diversity of crops and landscape plants that appeal to residents of San Luis Obispo County also appeal to invasive and destructive insect pests and plant diseases. In 2022 over 8,700 San Luis Obispo County residents volunteered to assist in the search for exotic, destructive insects by participating in the County Department of Agricultural/Weights and Measures’ Pest Detection Trapping Program. Over 2,500 traps were placed and moved in and out of yards throughout the county.

Traps for exotic insects such as Mediterranean, Oriental, Mexican and Melon fruit flies, Asian citrus psyllid, spongy moth, Japanese beetle, glassy-winged sharp

shooter and light brown apple moth were checked almost 35,000 times in 2022 by pest detection trappers from the Agricultural Commissioner’s office. This partnership with residents allows the department to implement a comprehensive and successful pest detection program.

The most common type of insect trap used is a triangular shaped, open-ended cardboard box with a sticky surface that holds an insect attractant specific to a particular pest. Larger, bright yellow sticky sheets of cardboard are used for general pest detection. The traps are placed out of reach of children and pets.

Friends of the Earth Files Lawsuit Against PG&E for Continued Operation of Diablo Canyon Past 2025

Friends of the Earth has filed a lawsuit against Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) in San Francisco Superior Court, seeking to stop the utility from continuing to operate the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in Avila Beach past 2025. In 2016, Friends of the Earth and PG&E agreed in a contract that Diablo Canyon would close by 2025. This was in exchange for Friends of the Earth dropping a lawsuit over environmental and public safety concerns at the plant.

Last month, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) determined PG&E could continue operating Diablo Canyon past 2025 while the utility works through the relicensing process. Friends of the Earth responded with a lawsuit filed yesterday, asking the court to order the utility to abide by the 2016 agreement and shut the plant down by 2025.

PG&E received backing from both federal and state officials to extend the operating life of Diablo Canyon through 2030, with a goal of providing Californians electric reliability. PG&E needs to obtain license renewals from the NRC, as well as regulatory approval from other federal and state agencies in order to keep operating the plant past 2025. The utility is planning to file a new license renewal application by the end of 2023, while it continues to operate under the existing licenses.

She stepped into leading the Parks and Recreation Department in 2011 and in 2019, returned as the assistant city manager to lead the newly created Community Services Group. This included hiring and managing four department heads and many other talented employees. The collaborative group has navigated multiple emergencies and fiscal challenges all while finding time to provide quality core services to the community in more efficient and effective ways.

Stanwyck looks forward to retiring with her husband and in her new role in as an attorney and advisor for a San Luis Obispo law firm.

Arrests Made in Grover Beach Narcotics Investigation

Couple booked on various gun, drug charges after search of residence

— On Thursday, March 16, the Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit served a search warrant at a residence in the 1100 block of Grand Avenue in Grover Beach.

During the search, detectives seized 163

grams of methamphetamine, 158 grams of fentanyl, two Glock-style ghost handguns, a Uzi fully automatic machine gun and a 12-gauge shotgun. The estimated street value of the narcotics is approximately $6,700.

The investigation led to the arrest of Brett Douglass and Jacquelyn Douglass of Grover Beach for the following charges: felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a machine gun, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled

substance while armed, possession for sale of a controlled substance, and selling controlled substances within 1,000 feet of a school. It should be noted that Grover Beach Elementary is located approximately 493 feet from the residence belonging to both Brett and Jacquelyn Douglass. Both were booked into the County Jail. A court order for a bail increase was approved. Both are in custody with bail set at $250,000.

This behind-the-scenes underground network permeates out of Sacramento, fueled by the teachers’ unions, fills the county education offices, school district personnel, local teachers’ unions, and even City Councils. You may not want to hear the core motivation for their destruction efforts, but you need to know. The goal is the destruction of the American family unit. Why? If the

Do you know who drove to Atascadero to pick up the completed petitions to remove Enney so they would get turned in on time? Think of the dramatic changes to our school boards, our now acceptable alternative lifestyle “youth” groups at city facilities, our teachers, and the whole atmosphere within our schools. It’s happening here, and it’s happening fast. That is why it is so important

I firmly believe that we must find ways to support and promote female athletes without compromising their safety and the integrity of their sport. We can do this through initiatives such as increased funding for women’s sports programs and promoting media coverage

Things formerly accepted as common good parenting practices are now considered revolutionary and radical: the importance of marriage, having a family, taking your kids to church, protecting their innocence, teaching them the difference between right and wrong, good and evil.

Once again, I will ask those in Paso Robles to do one very important thing in fighting against the underground network devised to tear apart our families. Vote for Kenny Enney, a man whom you can count on to stand up for parents’ rights, for families, and for traditional North County values. No, we will not have Milton Friedman’s school choice for a long time in California, if ever, but we can make a concerted effort to maintain some sense of sanity and logic in our local school districts. Kenney Enney is the best man to ensure that.

The Paso Robles Main Street Association invited back the Easter Bunny, after a threeyear hiatus, to the Holiday House “Hop to It” event in City Park. During his Superintendent Report, Tom Butler acknowledged the concerns raised by the kindergarten teachers and announced that another Kindergarten Committee meeting would be held later that week. He also introduced Dan Neff, the new assistant superintendent of human resources, who will be taking over for Curt Eichperger.

Josh Aston gave a presentation on the Career Technical Education Pathways at Atascadero High School. These pathways aim to help students develop the skills and knowledge necessary for future careers.

In 2013, the California Department of Education revised the Career Technical Education (CTE) Model Curriculum Standards to assist districts and schools in developing high-quality curriculum and instruction. The model standards were created with input from representatives from business, industry, postsecondary, and secondary education and reviewed by members of the general public. These standards offer clear guidelines for course content development and expectations for student achievement, with 15 Industry Sectors containing 58 Pathways.

Each Industry Sector has California’s 12 Standards for Career Ready Practice (Common Core), which closely aligns with Career Technical Anchor Standards, providing a framework for curriculum objectives. Each Pathway contains standards specific to that pathway and

On Oct. 15, 2021, the County of San Luis Obispo gave the IWMA formal notice that they would be withdrawing from the IWMA JPA on Nov. 15, 2021. The county then gave the IWMA formal notice that it wanted to rejoin the IWMA on March 23, 2023, pending further discussion between agencies.

Overall, the Career Technical Education Pathways at Atascadero High School are designed to prepare students for success in their future careers by providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge in a variety of industries.

PASO ROBLES — BarrelHouse Brewing Co. announced its expansion in Paso Robles through its purchase of The Hangar. This historic property is on the corner of Niblick Road and Creston Road.

This 10-acre property, nestled within East Paso Robles, will become the home to the brewery’s all-new production facility.

The charm of The Hangar’s legacy stretches back

to the golden age of aviation. Built in 1940 by the Army Corps of Engineers, the original hangar, at Sherwood Field, was the Central Coast base of operations for the U.S. Army Air Force and Navy during World War II. After the war, multiple generations of working families were employed by the Ennis Paper Company on these grounds, creating a unique history in Paso Robles that needs to be shared.

BarrelHouse’s design vision will showcase this colorful history (including actual vintage airplanes and printer presses) while creating a spectacular new community experience. The Hangar Project is a unique tribute to local history, deepening the roots of BarrelHouse Brewing Co. in the community that it calls home.

ATASCADERO — The community is invited to support the Atascadero Chamber by participating in an online silent auction that has something for everyone. The auction begins on April 11 and closes at 10 p.m. on April 22 at HundredYearGala.givesmart.com and raises funds that will be reinvested into the community.

“Once again, the live and silent auction packages are rich with excitement,” says Chamber Director of Membership Julie Matthews. “It will be a fun shopping experience and we encourage all to participate. Get ready for some bidding wars because we have outdone ourselves this year with a wide selection of packages, something for all budgets. All proceeds from this event will benefit the mission of the Chamber so we can continue to promote the economic vitality of the Atascadero community.”

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has announced Sarah Parsons as its new executive director, as she takes on the role of spearheading community outreach and fundraising for the nonprofit horse rescue and sanctuary. Parsons comes to the horse sanctuary after serving as executive director at the Paso Robles Children’s Museum for one year.

Founded in 1991 in Carmel and permanently located in Paso Robles since 2021, Redwings provides a safe haven for horses in need of rescue, rehabilitation, and permanent sanctuary.

Parsons, originally from Western New York, grew up riding horses and says she had a childhood dream of becoming a horse trainer. With a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a Master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach, Parsons’ career path led her to the nonprofit sector, where she worked for the Los Angeles Kings Foundation in fundraising and leadership roles.

“I now get to be an advocate for the animals that had such an impact in my own life,” said Parsons. “Redwings Horse Sanctuary has such a wonderful mission. What we do here needs to be shared with the community.”

Redwings Horse Sanctuary began in May 1991 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization

in Carmel with a mission to end the abuse, neglect, and slaughter of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, and burros through rescue and foster care. In its first year, Redwings rescued 15 equines from abusive or life-threatening situations. Redwings staff then rehabilitated the equines and matched them with carefully screened adoptive homes.

In 2014 Redwings was accredited by CARMA (California Race Management Account) and is an approved after-care partner for thoroughbreds that raced in California. In 2015

Redwings was accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), a national organization, as an approved after-care facility for retired racehorses. Then on Sept. 30, 2016, Redwings received full accreditation from GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries), an international organization that provides certification for animal sanctuaries through verification and accreditation.

Today 82 horses call Redwings home. The facility has everything from the smallest miniature horse to the largest draft horse. The herd of nine burros from Death Valley are at the entrance of the sanctuary to greet all the staff, visitors, and volunteers each day. Redwings’ herd of Mustangs from the Pryor Mountains of Montana are very popular with guests, and its draft herd, rescued from the Premarin auctions in Canada, stand regally at the top of their hill and keep a watchful eye over the ranch.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Redwings is always looking for volunteers to help us provide the highest standard of care for our horses and burros. You do not need to have any prior horse experience to volunteer at Redwings. If you would like to work with our horses, the first step is to take a Volunteer Training Class. This class covers sanctuary rules, basic safe horsemanship skills, and an introduction to some of the horses that you will be working with. After completion of the class you are welcome to come volunteer and help with the horses any time during our volunteer hours. Volunteer hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 3:30pm, and we are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Note: We do not allow volunteers to ride the horses at Redwings.

There are other ways to get involved and volunteer at Redwings too. We have opportunities to help in our rose and memorial garden, volunteering in the office, helping with events and fundraising, and more. Slow Cooker Beef Tacos

Ingredients:

Cooking spray

2 medium onions, chopped

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 chipotle in adobo sauce, chopped, plus 3 tbs. adobo

sauce

• 1 (3 - 3.5 Lb.) beef brisket

• 2 tbs. steak seasoning

• 1 tsp. cumin seeds, crushed

For serving:

Warm corn tortillas, shredded Cheddar, shredded romaine, guacamole, sliced fresh jalapeňos, lime wedges, sour cream, chopped tomatoes, chopped fresh cilantro and finely chopped white onion.

Directions:

Lightly grease a 6-quart slow cooker. Add onions and garlic. Stir together chipotle pepper and adobo sauce in a bowl. Season beef with steak seasoning and cumin, then rub with adobo mixture. Pace on top of onions and garlic. Add 1/4 cup water

Please pardon me for being brash, but I think I’m a very polite and well-mannered person. I owe it all to my grandmother who was a real stickler for proper manners, vocabulary, and elocution. Believe me, if my thank-you notes for Christmas gifts weren’t postmarked on December 26, I might be cut off completely the following year, and I could hardly afford that. My grandmother was probably the reason why I didn’t learn how to be a really good cusser until I went to work in the oilfields.

People who study such things say that a language somewhere in the world becomes extinct every two weeks. Even in America, we’re losing words at an alarming rate, and while I think it’s good that the n- word is used less and less, it saddens me not to hear words like persnickety, cahoots, and horsefeathers anymore. Regarding our pres-

ent sad, sickly state, we need to round up all the doctors who had anything to do with curing “cooties” and making that word disappear from the American lexicon and replacing it with COVID-19.

Listen to the way today’s teenagers talk, and you’ll realize we’re witnessing the death of chivalry in this country. Here are 10 words or phrases that are more endangered than all the monkey tree frogs and fanged bats combined.

#10 Hello or Goodbye — On my daily walks, I often pass others and only about 20 percent of them bother to acknowledge my existence in any way. Mostly it’s because they have earbuds in their ears listening to rap music or they are too busy yelling at their smartphones. When I was a kid, we got a kick out of using creative ways to say “goodbye” and used phrases like, “See you later alligator,” “After a while crocodile,” and “See you around like a donut.”

#9 I’m Sorry — Heavens to Murgatroyd, I haven’t heard anyone take responsibility for anything they said or did since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.

#8 Excuse me — This is a

derivative or subspecies of the phrase “come again.” Nowadays teenagers are more apt to say, “What chew talking about?”

#7 Thank You — The last time I got a thank you note in the mail was during the Nixon administration. And e-mail thank yous don’t count because they are too easy. To show real appreciation you should have to look for a Hallmark card, buy a stamp and go to the Post Office.

#6 No, thank you — This idiom has been replaced by “Get lost.” Or, “For the hundredth time, please tell your computer to quit robocalling me and take my name off your list.”

#5 How are you? --This query used to show one’s sincere interest in a person’s physical well-being. Now it’s only heard when the beneficiary of an elderly, sick, rich person wants to know when you intend to bite the dust and if there was anything said recipient could do to hasten such an outcome.

#4 Your welcome — This phrase went out with Betamax, get the lead out, cut a rug, soda jerks and hobos. The updated version is: “No problemo.”

A Time for Renewal

Spring is a season of new beginnings and fresh starts. As the snow melts away and flowers bloom, we are reminded of the beauty and potential that lies ahead.

It is also a time for forgiveness, a chance to let go of past hurts and resentments and start anew. Just as the earth sheds its old layers and emerges renewed, we, too, can use this season to shed our old habits and patterns and embrace a brighter, more positive future. So let spring be a time for renewal and forgiveness, a time to grow and flourish.

A great story written by Ernest Hemingway follows the life of Paco, a young waiter apprentice Living in Spain. One night, Paco and his father had a falling out, and harsh words were said; feelings hurt, and Paco left home. After a few days, Paco’s father missed his son terribly and searched for him everywhere but could not find his son. He finally decided to take out an ad in the local newspaper, El Liberal. The advertisement read, “Paco, meet me at the Hotel Montana at noon on Tuesday. All is forgiven! Love, Papa.” Paco saw the ad and arrived at the hotel the next day at noon. There were 800 men also waiting there for their father’s forgiveness. I love this story because it reminds me that we all seek freedom from the bondage of resentment, and forgiveness is the key to the kingdom.

Place tomatoes, onion jalapeňo, cilantro, lime juice, and honey in a blender. Puree just until smooth, 15 to 30 seconds.

Season with salt and pepper. Serve with tortilla chips. Refrigerate, covered up to 1 week.

Note: I used 2 cans RO-TEL original, diced tomatoes with green chilies and 1 teaspoon of the honey. It was delicious. So either way, bring on the chips.

We on the playground used an alternative phrase: “Liar, liar, pants on fire.” This polite expression is older than Methusala and was used when someone said or did something that flabbergasted you. Since no one is “flabbergasted” anymore or has any idea of who Methusala is, people just say: “Chew messin’ with me, man?”

#1 Please — A polite request as in, “Please, Mister Big Shot, would you turn off that obnoxious phone or go outside to talk. I’m trying to enjoy a $45 lunch with my wife and don’t need to know about your booming business, your sorry sex life, or your otherwise egotistical existence.

There’s another great story about two monks traveling together who came to a river with a strong current. As they prepared to cross the river, a young woman approached, asking them for help. The monks had taken vows not to touch a woman. Suddenly, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his journey. The

younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. After rejoining his companion, he was speechless, and an hour passed without a word between them. Two more hours passed, then three. Finally, the younger monk could no longer contain himself and blurted out, “As monks, we are not permitted to touch a woman; how could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?” The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river; why are you still carrying her?”

Nevaeh Dyer took first place in the Gold Division in the shot put at the West Coast Relays meet in Clovis last week. She had a personal best 38’7” throw.

Templeton High tennis player Nick Merzon won his singles and doubles matches as the Eagles beat Lompoc on Monday, April 3, and moved to 8-2 in league. Templeton will once again play Lompoc this Thursday at the Templeton Tennis Ranch.

Templeton High golfer Owen Bousman, shown here teeing off, led the scoring with a 79 in the Eagles’ match before spring break. The Eagles boys golf team hosted the Mountain League match at Hunter Ranch Golf Course and won the team competition with a score of 404. In addition to Bousman, Templeton had contributions from Rex Koen (80), Wyatt Wilson (81), Luke Davis (82), Luke Cherry (83), and Quinn Tannehill (92).
