With trees already stressed from the drought, the heat was an added challenge to the trees which were already set to have a low yielding year. Stemper and her family conserve water as much as they can, relying on dry farm methods and using drip irrigation as a nearly last resort.Additionally, Stemper and her family lost their second season grow of blackberries and over half of their heir loom tomatoes. Thankfully though, their apple trees are staggered planted, meaning they are planted weeks apart to spread out the harvest window. Some apples were able to be saved before the heat did their damage, and Stemper says she is grateful for their farm being diversified with their crops.

"All of the services that we provide in the Well ness Center are free. There's no cost," said Behav ioral Health and Wellness Center Coordinator Kamela Proulx.
"Kamela is obviously one of the most highly trained professionals in this field working in K-12, in my opinion," stated Superintendent Tom Butler. "I think that gives us such a big edge, not only because the background she brings can help a variety of different needs students may have, but in addition, you can see she's also able to mentor and bring up people going into this field. So that actu ally brings extra professionals into our equation."
"So we, when I say we, I'm going to speak for our counseling department, so the four of us. We support students in academic, personal, social, college, and career goals. So that's the comprehen sive scope of how we support students, and often times they're all connected," said Vaca. "We do counseling with students, but then the extension to that is how do we offer support beyond what we can do in this office. So we partner together [with the Wellness Center]."

ATASCADERO — Atascadero News was invited to tour Atascadero High School's (AHS) Wellness Center and its counseling offices earlier this week. The Wellness Center is a free, districtwide resource that is open five days a week and is utilized not only by AHS, but throughout the district as a whole.
The Wellness Center has been providing students and their families in Atascadero with support and its current model of care since 2016, when Proulx was hired. The center was run under a different model the four years before her arrival.
The Wellness Center also provides students with daily clubs, which are open to all AHS students.
Proulx's qualifications include a license in marriage and family therapy, being a board-cer tified behavior analyst, having her pupil personnel services credential, and being a certified clinical trauma professional. She's also in the process of getting her certification as an animal-assisted intervention specialist. At the Wellness Center, she builds her staff with interns on their way to becoming licensed therapists after passing their Clinical Psychology Master's program. She gives
AHS's team of four counselors, led by Lead Counselor Meghan Vaca, work in tandem with The Wellness Center.
The AHS counselors work on a last-name basis instead of going by grade level. Vaca, who's been at AHS for eight years, said that this helps with credibility and familiarity to the families in the school."Our biggest goal is just to let them know that there is somebody here who cares and this is a safe space," added Vaca. "Yes, you need to have your credits, and yes, let's support you in your future, but in the here and now, right now, you matter. That's the biggest goal."

and there's so much going on in figuring out who you are. So we work with a lot of that self-explo ration and self-esteem and values and all that," stated Proulx. "Here, they get to develop a rela tionship with an adult who is there just for them. We don't have any preconceived notions of who they should be or what they should do. We're here just for them."
"This age [High School] is such a dynamic time,
steps to address it," added Proulx. "And so they establish a relationship with one of the therapists, see them on a regular weekly basis, just like any mental health support."
Center mostly sees AHS students, they're also available to provide emotional support to whole families and younger students as well. Proulx says she sees a combination of individual students and families for therapy. She also stated that most students who need ongoing support from the center are self-referred.

ATASCADERO — It was recently announced that Atascadero's beloved rock snake will officially be disman tled and removed from around Atascadero Lake in October. The snake originated in August 2020 when Atascadero resident Wanda Kohl started it. In the past two-plus years, the snake has grown to wrap around the entirety of the lake.

His father, Ruben Flores, is on trial for helping his son cover up the crime.When she first took the stand on Thursday, Hudson told the jury she came forward with the information after the "Your Own Backyard" podcast was released. She explained to the court that when she was 17 years old, in 1996,
14 of those projects were recommended to the supervisors for approval. Twenty-seven organizations submitted 31 applications for the ARPA funding but only 29 of those were eligible for consideration.
District 1 Supervisor John Peschong motioned to add Senior Nutrition Program, Meals that Connect, to be approved for $200,000. To accommodate that, he motioned to take $50,000 from City Farm, CONSOLE, HASLO, and One Cool Earth.The motion was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Redwings is always looking for volunteers to help us provide the highest standard of care for our horses and burros. You do not need to have any prior horse experience to volunteer at Redwings. If you would like to work with our horses, the first step is to take a Volunteer Training Class. This class covers sanctuary rules, basic safe horsemanship skills, and an introduction to some of the horses that you will be working with. After completion of the class you are welcome to come volunteer and help with the horses any time during our volunteer hours. Volunteer hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 3:30pm, and we are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Note: We do not allow volunteers to ride the horses at Redwings.Thereareother ways to get involved and volunteer at Redwings too. We have opportunities to help in our rose and memorial garden, volunteering in the office, helping with events and fundraising, and more. In addition to the amaz ing four-course gourmet meal, paired with lovely Paso Robles wines, the highlight of the evening was the passionate presentation by former “Club Kid” Abby Lopez who shared why her experiences at the Boys & Girls Clubs allowed her to reach her great potential. Abby is now an executive with G3 Enterprises — a major logis tics solutions business for the ag and wine industries — and she made it clear to all that the programs offered by BGCMCC made a huge difference in the success of her life and are criti cal for shaping the lives of young people who need the extra atten tion and support. Her delight ful presentation was followed by a video message from Rick Stollmeyer who announced “The Stollmeyer Challenge,” where he will match all dona tions made over the course of the year up to $300,000. Seeing the need for greater STEAM (science, technology, engineer ing, art, and math) as crucial for 21st-century kids and acknowl edging the greater need to serve more teens with Boys & Girls Clubs programming, funds raised through The Stollmeyer Challenge will help the organi zation enrich STEAM and teen programming at all of our clubs on the Central Coast.

Last but not least, she spent her last precious years at the Valdez House in Atascadero, CA. All for whom we are eternally grateful for helping make Mary’s life so full and complete.
Mary was kind, sweet, thought ful, and completely devoted to the Lord. She found so much joy in the simple things in life and brought that spirit of happiness and love everywhere she went. She loved dressing up, wearing makeup, painting her nails, and styling her hair. She loved coun try music and dancing and always was ready for a party. She enjoyed laughing and spending time with family and friends. She loved a good meal (hamburger and fries a favorite!) and loved nothing more than sitting down, chat ting, enjoying a meal, and laugh ing with those she loved. She made every holiday and celebra tion extra special. Heaven will certainly have a little more spar kle with her in it.

Biden spent considerable time discussing the reality that our constitution is a living document and our democracy allows for the flexibility to grow and that while oftentimes this seems to be pain fully slow, our history is a testa ment to change. Chapter HL has put together what they call a “Star Card” offering discounts from 70+ retail partners in the area, including automotive, hardware, nursery, beverage, cloth ing, jewelry, floral, health, restau rants, salons, spas, and wineries.
I'm not criticizing or making fun of some overworked employee at an auction market because I've made so many similar mistakes in my career that if I had a dollar for every wrong key I've hit I'd be in the Forbes 400. And I can easily see how it could have been far worse. For example, if the typist had hit the "p" instead of the "b" they could have been flooded with antique dealers wanting to sell their old non-working lamps of every kind imaginable.

If it would have been a Special Cow Sale one wrong keystroke could have resulted in the sale of "Cops" or "Cons" and good luck to the pen riders trying to sort them out. Since the "r" and the "u" are kept apart by only by two keys on the keyboard I can see how a "Special Horse Sale" could easily become a "Special House Sale". Then you'd have every home owner in the country consigning to your "House Sale" who has a variable-rate interest loan and just had their monthly payment doubled. If you thought finding cow buyers was tough try finding a home buyer these days.

I remember dancing in the very first event with Dan Davis as my professional dance partner. Other dancers that year included Joanne Main, Jay DeCou, E.J. Rossi, Giovanni and Molly Comin, Jim Lewis, Jim Patterson, Tina Wysong, and Keith Schmidt. Little did we know how popular the event would become. That year we danced to benefit the Atascadero Library expansion and now, many nonprofits benefit.

Directions: Coat 4 1⁄2-quart slow-cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice and salt in a large bowl. Beat batter and sugar in sepa rate bowl with electric mixer on high speed until light, about 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating with mixer to incorporate each egg before adding another. Beat in pumpkin. With mixer running on low speed, carefully add flour mixture and beat until smooth. Spread evenly in stone ware insert of slow-cooker. Cover; cook on High 2 to 21⁄2 hours or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Drizzle 1⁄2 cup caramel sauce over cake. Spoon into bowls and serve warm with ice cream, if desired, and driz zle with additional caramel sauce. Makes 8 servings.

The caption under one photo said the image was of the "1983-84 Texas Junior Brahma Queen," The only problem was it was a picture of a Brahma cow. Making matters worse on the same page was an ad with the photo of the cute young Brahma Queen only the copy read, "She will sell June 9, 1984.
So to whoever typed, "Special Lame Sale" I hope you don't feel too bad because it could have been a lot worse. And I hope you are able to find another job soon.

Dan and Ramona Phillips have been here for 61 years since Dan opened Dan’s Barber Shop on El Camino Real. Between the three honorees, they have lived in Atascadero for 107 years.
