A Note from the Publisher

“Building a beautiful home is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about weaving dreams into every corner, painting memories on every wall, and nurturing love in every room.” — Unknown

As you look out at the hillsides covered in green, it is impossible not to recognize the beauty of where we call home. With all the wildflowers blooming, this time of year truly amplifies my appreciation. The warm weather urges us to go outdoors and tackle home projects that we postponed during the colder months, which is why we dedicate this issue each year to the “Home.”

Creating a home where memories are made, laughter echoes throughout family gatherings, and quiet evenings are spent with our loved ones is an art form in itself. As Calabasas residents, we are fortunate to have a wealth of talented professionals at our fingertips—designers, contractors, landscapers, and visionaries— who can turn our dream homes into reality.

In this issue, we not only pay tribute to homemaking but also shine a spotlight on the remarkable women driving progress in our community. In our “Women in Business” section, we highlight their achievements, recognizing the grace with which they navigate challenges while shouldering immense responsibilities. And let us not forget the upcoming celebrations of moms and dads, the pillars of our families. Dive into our Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Gift Guide, filled with local treasures to honor the special individuals who shape our lives with their love and guidance.

On our cover, we introduce you to the Harrisons—Audley and Raychel—who are a testament to love’s enduring power and the fulfillment found in family life. Their journey, from a chance encounter in Las Vegas to building a thriving business and raising their two children, Ariella and Hudson, serves as an inspiring real-life fairytale with resilience and success.

From all of us at Calabasas Style, we hope your summer is welcomed with warmth and wonder.

Ask the Pharmacist

I am sneezing, congested, and coughing. How can I tell if it is allergies or a cold?

You are not alone; many people assume it is allergies and then it turns out to be a cold or covid. First you should rule out covid by doing a rapid test. If the test is negative and symptoms persist, repeat the test after a day or two. Often there is not enough virus present for a rapid test to detect covid in the early stages. Second, consider the time of year. Allergies are more common in the spring, and colds are more common in the fall and winter. Finally, duration of symptoms is another way to distinguish between the two. A cold will complete its course in five to seven days; allergies can linger for weeks or even months. It is also estimated that up to 40 percent of children suffer from allergies. While allergies are not contagious, it can be difficult to tell the difference between allergies and the common cold in both children and adults.

Many symptoms are similar between colds and allergies, but there are some distinct differences as well. The symptoms mentioned—sneezing, congestion, and coughing—are common with both, as is a sore throat. Unique to allergies are a runny nose and itchy watery eyes. A cold can cause more congestion, a tingly feeling in the nose, and fatigue.

Since this is the season for allergies, let’s talk a little about treatment. This also applies to colds, since the symptoms are similar, even though colds also can be treated with rest and fluids. There are many over-the-counter antihistamines to help with sneezing and runny noses. Nasal rinses are excellent at removing mucus and allergens. There are nasal sprays that work to relieve symptoms and others that are used daily to keep allergy symptoms minimized. It is always best to ask your pharmacist. We do get asked this question a lot and can help you select the most effective medications for your specific symptoms.

Do I Need an Attorney?

Well...It Depends.

Am I too young to start setting up estate planning documents?

Well...it depends on your health; the health of your parents (hereditary illnesses); physical condition; and your faith in eternity and higher powers. Also, it depends if you care for your immediate family and your loved ones. As a practicing estate planning attorney, I often receive calls when life strikes unexpectedly, and it is already too late to be proactive. So, the families must deal with the situation in emergency mode.

One such situation happened when a man, the primary provider for his family, collapsed with a sudden brain aneurysm. He ended up at the hospital in a coma with minimal chance of becoming a functional person again, bedridden for many years to come. He did not have a plan in place—not even the simplest and most necessary documents were prepared, such as a power of attorney, a health care directive, and HIPAA release forms. The family asked me if I could prepare power of attorney documents for him since they needed to access his bank accounts to transact everyday household business while he was incapacitated. Unfortunately, it is not possible to sign any legal documents while a person is in a coma or in any state of diminished capacity to understand.

Just because the man procrastinated or never considered creating an estate planning package, his family was forced to petition the probate court and obtain conservatorship over his person. This process can be stressful, long, and humiliating, and it costs thousands of dollars, often resulting in chaos amongst the family and loss of unity over the uncertainty and disruption of everyday life. Instead of being united, focusing on the medical emergency at hand, the family was overwhelmed from dealing with attorneys, courts, delays, and unnecessary expenses.

It is never too early to make a plan to ensure that your needs and those of your loved ones are covered, especially in an unexpected emergency. Your future depends on the decisions you make today. Take action. Protect what matters to you.

48TH ANNUAL PEPPERDINE ASSOCIATES DINNER

More than 550 Pepperdine friends and supporters gathered to celebrate the 48th annual Pepperdine Associates Dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel on February 17. The event’s theme, “Shining the Light of Truth,” recognized the significance of seeking truth as a cornerstone of American ideals and aspirations and featured former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who discussed democracy and leadership. President Jim Gash gave a powerful presentation on the state of the university, the Christian values that are rooted in founder George Pepperdine’s original vision, and Pepperdine’s commitment to its values to make a transformative impact on local and global communities. Pepperdine alumni Seth and Jolyn Haye were the dinner chairs and reflected on their devotion to supporting Pepperdine years beyond graduation. Per Seth, “The Pepperdine Associates Dinner allows us to celebrate the mission, history, and future of Pepperdine, and our lives have been forever changed because of the wonderful people at this beloved institution.”

TEE OFF FORE KIDS GOLF CLASSIC

The Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley hosted its annual Tee Off Fore Kids Golf Classic on March 25 at Calabasas Country Club. The beautiful spring weather and pristine course conditions gave way to a great day of networking and friendly competition on the course while making a difference for our community’s youth. The tournament registration included a player prize pack, great auction items, and a fabulous, fun cocktail hour featuring contests and team awards. The Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley was founded in 1992 in response to the need for safe, affordable, educational, and productive activities for at-risk youth during non-school hours. Today, more than 800 San Fernando Valley youth are served at the Gary M. Thomas Clubhouse & Teen Center and an additional eight area school sites. The mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible adults.

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE PREMIERE NIGHT GALA

The Premiere Night Gala was a night to remember, celebrating the official unveiling of the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design on Friday, April 19, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Gala guests were among the first to see the transformed design spaces, with the evening beginning in the hills overlooking Arroyo Seco for a tour of the Potter Daniels Showcase House before they were transported back to the stadium courtyard. Nearly 300 attendees, including this year’s team of interior and exterior designers, enjoyed a reception, dinner, live auction, and music from the Art Deco band. Now in its 59th year, the Pasadena Showcase House fundraiser has donated $1 million over the past year to various music nonprofits in addition to over $25 million that the event has raised since its founding, originally supporting the L.A. Philharmonic. The Showcase House is open to the public for tours until May 19. For more information, visit pasadenashowcase.org.

Once upon a time, aka the year 2003, a beautiful up-and-coming celebrity hairstylist named Raychel met Audley Harrison, an Olympic Gold Medal champion boxer from Great Britain, when he became her client at a John Paul Mitchell salon in Las Vegas. He thought she was a knock-out, asked her out on a date, and their instant attraction easily grew into a deep romantic connection. In 2005, the couple pledged their forever love, marrying on a faraway Jamaican isle. The rest is his- and her-story.

Two years later, the Harrisons moved from Las Vegas to Westlake Village in the enchanting Conejo Valley where Raychel’s family lived. Born in Israel, she moved to the San Fernando Valley at the impressionable age of 6. Both Raychel and Audley had originally relocated to Las Vegas from different destinations. Audley moved from London to further his boxing career after winning the 2000 Olympic Games Gold Medal for Great Britain. He first turned professional in London but found himself travelling back and forth to Las Vegas often for training camps. Raychel moved to Las Vegas at 14 years old as her passion for the professional beauty industry was growing roots. Setting her sights on working with the global artistic director of John Paul Mitchell Systems, Raychel was able to secure an apprenticeship at his salon inside the Mandalay Bay hotel after completing cosmetology school. Her reputation and clientele were built on this salon floor—the same floor where fate ultimately drew her to Audley.

The boxer and cosmetologist eventually settled in Westlake Village to be near Raychel’s family and enjoy the area’s highly rated community and educational system. Fast forward to the birth of their children, daughter Ariella, now age 17, and son Hudson, age 10, and the addition of the newest family member, an adorable Sheepdoodle named Tucker. “The camaraderie between neighbors is very special here,” observes Raychel. “Everyone’s on a first-name basis, happily helping each other out. We share oranges from our trees. All in all, it’s wonderful to be immersed in our community.”

“We really appreciate the charming small-town vibes that are rather unique in the Greater Los Angeles area,” adds Audley.

Both of their children clearly followed in their father’s footsteps with their passion for sports. Hudson currently plays club soccer and has also explored his athletic talents in basketball and jujitsu. Ariella loves all aspects of women’s basketball, transferring to Calabasas High School to train with the Coyotes

for her senior year in addition to playing for Sports Academy in preparation for college. She has been involved in the sport for nearly 10 years, playing in a variety of recreational and competitive leagues. In 2021, Ariella created Women’s Athletic Awareness, a local organization to promote women’s sports.

“We have fun going to WNBA or NCAA games as a family, but it is always most enjoyable when we get to watch Ariella play,” shares her proud papa. “We also watch soccer games whenever we can. Hudson’s games take place in the Conejo Valley and beyond, so it frequently becomes an all-day family outing.” The Harrisons also enjoy visiting farmers markets and local restaurants, such as Hamani in Calabasas, Basta in Agoura, and the Stonehaus at Westlake Village Inn, to celebrate the kids’ games. When they’re not spending time locally, you’ll find the family vacationing together, spending school holidays in such faraway lands as Hawaii and London, England.

Much of the couple’s time is spent on their careers. A celebrity hairstylist sporting 26 years of experience, Raychel opened their award-winning hair salon, Salon Nuuvo, in Calabasas 12 years ago. Both she and Audley also cofounded Nuuvo Haircare, cruelty-free products that started as just a single argan oil formulation in 2015. Today, their line has grown to 18 products with 39 variants. The salon was also one of the first companies awarded green business recognition by the City of Calabasas. It’s also certified as a Green Circle Salon since they recycle and repurpose 95 percent of their waste.

“We encourage our kids to dream big and go for their goals,” explains Audley. “We teach them to have a purpose and to be upstanding humans when no one is looking.”

Raychel adds, “We have so many blessings to be grateful for, especially our health. So, we make it a priority to give back through volunteer work as a family.” The Harrisons often take their kids to downtown L.A. when Raychel and the salon team provide complimentary hair services for the homeless, and they donate food and participate in clothing drives.

“Ariella is also a talented painter and writer. And she is incredibly clever, always finding ways to make her life more efficient,”

58 Calabasas style

beams her proud mom, noting her daughter’s creative and tech-savvy skills. Hudson is a gifted chef, and his family all agrees...his scrambled eggs and gourmet guacamole top the list of his best culinary creations.

Audley prioritizes his volunteer roles as a long-time youth soccer and basketball coach, which is where he dedicates his spare time. Since retiring from boxing, Audley continues to advise upcoming boxers in their careers. He also serves as an advisory board member of Theirworld, supporting education in low- and middle-income countries around the world. Recently, Audley helped both Las Virgenes Unified School District and Oak Park Unified School District in developing the districts’ diversity, equity, and inclusion programs as a parent stakeholder.

Raychel actively engages in the community, utilizing her business acumen to guide local small business owners as the business development chairman on the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce Executive Board of Directors. Among many accolades, her enthusiasm and leadership in her field once earned her recognition as one of the beauty industry’s "Top 20 CEOs Under 40." She is relentlessly passionate about health and wellness. From fashioning cruelty-free, ecofriendly hair products to juicing, Pilates, nature walks, and more, Raychel practices a healthy SoCal lifestyle.

Despite Raychel’s demanding schedule, the multi-talented entrepreneur always takes time to organize several community events each year. The salon team holds a Zuma Beach clean-up annually. This year, it’s in August, and they invite the entire community to join in. They also organize toy drives for local foster kids through Casa Pacifica and host events where clients and friends can donate gently used clothes to women affected by domestic violence. Currently, Raychel is collaborating with the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, L.A. County Fire Department, and other local organizations to plan an event aimed at youth, fostering positive interactions with our first responders and uniformed personnel.

“Our family, like our community, has built a foundation based upon shared values,” remarks Raychel. “We also respect each other as individuals, with unique personalities and interests.” Audley thoughtfully agrees, “We’re always learning from one another and considering each other’s point of view with love and understanding.” We look forward to watching this family as they embark on a real-life fairytale unfolding into their happily ever after. n

CALABASH WINNERS REIGN TRIUMPHANT

The 2024 Calabash Men’s Member-Guest Golf Tournament was one of the most exciting golf events in the history of the Calabasas Country Club. Cadillac of Calabasas was the official hole-in-one sponsor for the three-day tournament, awarding guest Stu Goodman a brand-new Cadillac after he hit a hole-in-one with a 190-yard drive from the championship tee par 3 on the 14th hole. The lucky winners of this year’s golf tournament were John Reilley and Matt Butler, who received appreciable cash prizes and bragging rights for the upcoming year. This year’s Calabash included a par 3 contest and five 9-hole matches followed by a championship horse race, concluding on Saturday evening with a Mardi Gras-themed party, complete with dinner, drinks, dancing, and entertainment. The Calabash golf tournament is one the most anticipated events of the year, where participation is determined by a lottery system. To be eligible, a country club member must also be a member of the men’s club with a valid GHIN/USGA number at the time they register for the lottery.

Grateful Hearts Benefits LAPD & LAFD

Grateful Hearts at Warner Park, a fundraiser for the local LAPD and LAFD in the San Fernando Valley, was held to help provide funds for items and products the city cannot. The tremendous community event was produced by the West Valley Warner Center Chamber of Commerce, the largest chamber in the San Fernando Valley. Due to the pandemic, the annual event was on hiatus, and this was its grand return. The event, which took over the entire Warner Park as well as a couple of streets, boasted a car show, live music, a blood drive, a safety fair, pet adoptions, displays from the LAPD and LAFD, food trucks, informative booths from many different servicerelated organizations, bounce houses, Operation Gratitude care-package preparation for our troops, and so much more.

One of the highlights was a “cook off” between the LAFD and LAPD to see who could provide the best barbecue. The line for the barbecue stretched over 50 yards, and proceeds went to fund the LAPD and LAFD. The event was a grand slam home run. It was huge. Attendance from the community was off the charts, and everybody had a great time. It was a roaring return for one of the best events in the San Fernando Valley. Over $70,000 was raised over the course of the day which truly shows that our community members have “grateful hearts.” Well done! For more information, visit woodlandhillscc.net.

Food for Thought

The effect of diet on mental health

We know that what we eat can affect our waistline and overall physical health, but we often overlook how these foods also influence our mental wellness—altering our immediate mood, stress levels, and cognitive functioning. Growing research in nutritional psychiatry recognizes the consequences and correlations between what you eat and the kinds of bacteria that live in your gut, how you feel, and how you ultimately behave.

Eating a whole-food, nutrient-diverse, fruit-and-vegetable-dense diet is proven to reduce excessive inflammation in the

body, enhance energy production in cells, and help the gut microbiome—all systems linked to brain health and therefore beneficial to mental wellbeing.

How your gut leads to glory

The link between diet and emotions starts with the close relationship between your brain and gastrointestinal tract, where your gut microbiome hosts billions of bacteria that influence the production of chemicals responsible for carrying messages from the gut to the brain (neurotransmitters). For example, about 95 percent of your serotonin, the “feel good” neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep and appetite,

mediate moods, and inhibit pain, is produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Eating nutritionally dense foods promotes the growth of “good” bacteria, which in turn influences optimal production levels of neurotransmitters. So, it makes sense that the inner workings of your digestive system also guide your moods.

Nutrition as a remedy

Each year, one in five adults experiences mental illness in the U.S., with depression being among the most common conditions—making it the most widely researched in nutrition psychiatry. Studies show that dietary interventions can significantly reduce depressive symptoms. ADHD can also be reduced through diet. In a recent study, researchers found that a broad-spectrum micronutrient supplement with all known essential vitamins and minerals improved symptoms of inattention and enhanced emotional regulation and overall general functioning.

The brain relies on an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support its daily functions, so it’s essential that this powerhouse gets the proper fuel to promote an overall sense of wellness. Low levels of certain nutrients, including folate, vitamin D, and magnesium, are linked to worsening mood, feelings of anxiety, and risk of depression.

Good for your mood foods

Whole foods: Think fresh fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors and protein sources like meat, dairy, and quinoa for powerful nutrients to benefit mind and body.

Fiber-rich foods: Nutrient-packed whole grains, beans, and plant-based foods help absorb glucose slowly to avoid sugar rushes and crashes.

Antioxidants: Berries, leafy greens, and foods with omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation and can improve depression and anxiety.

Fermented foods: Sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, and kombucha contain probiotics which benefit your digestive tract. n

Ways to Celebrate Mom and Dad

Parents shape our lives by offering unconditional love, guidance, and support along the way. Celebrating them is not just about marking a calendar date; it's about expressing gratitude for their constant presence and sacrifices. Whether it's Mother's Day, Father's Day, or any other day of the year, here are some heartfelt ways to celebrate and honor the remarkable individuals we call Mom and Dad.

Give personalized gifts

One of the most touching ways to show appreciation is through personalized gifts. Consider items like custom-made jewelry with meaningful engravings, photo albums capturing cherished memories, or a handwritten letter expressing gratitude and love.

Spend quality time

In today's fast-paced world, time is a precious commodity. Spending quality time with Mom and Dad is a meaningful way to celebrate them. Plan a day out doing activities they enjoy, whether it's a leisurely stroll in the park, a movie night at home, or a homemade dinner cooked together.

Honor their interests

Every parent has hobbies and interests that bring them joy. Use special occasions as an opportunity to indulge their passions. Whether it's tickets to a concert, a subscription to their favorite magazine, or a cooking class they've been wanting to try, honoring their interests demonstrates thoughtfulness and consideration.

Create a tribute

Gather family and friends to create a heartfelt tribute honoring Mom and Dad. This could take the form of a scrapbook filled with letters, photos, and mementos collected from loved ones or a video montage capturing fond memories and messages of appreciation.

Express gratitude

Above all, never underestimate the power of a simple "thank you." Take the time to express gratitude verbally, letting Mom and Dad know just how much they mean to you. Whether it's over a heartfelt conversation, a handwritten note, or a spontaneous hug, these words of appreciation carry immense weight and can brighten their day in ways you may never realize. n

What's the Buzz on Bee Pollen?

Maybe you’ve heard it referred to as nature’s superfood or nature’s multivitamin. In the world of natural remedies, bee pollen stands out as a true gem with its remarkable number of health benefits. The tiny golden granules, created when bees collect pollen from flowering plants and mix it with their digestive enzymes, also pack a huge nutritional punch. Not only is bee pollen a complete protein with all essential amino acids—it is also considered a complete food with a nearly perfect nutrient and mineral makeup.

What are the benefits?

Incorporating bee pollen into your daily diet enhances your health in numerous ways. “Most people tend to notice positive effects in less than a week," says Al Fortune, general manager of Bennett’s Honey Farm in Fillmore. “Your afternoon ‘slump’ will disappear, your mood should improve, and you’ll have a better sense of well-being."

Energy boost: High carbohydrate and B-vitamin content allow these mighty morsels to combat fatigue, improve stamina, and enhance energy levels.

Immune system support: Potent antioxidants and bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids, enhance cellular health, therefore boosting the body’s ability to fight off pathogens.

Digestive health aid: Enzymes found in bee pollen provide support to digestion and nutrient absorption, alleviating discomfort, helping to regulate bowel movements, and promoting overall gastrointestinal health.

Tips for consumption

Adding bee pollen to foods like smoothies, salads, and acai bowls is a quick and creative solution to ingest added nutrients. "It is not necessary to chew pollen,” notes Fortune. “You can just chase it down with water or juice."

Fortune recommends, "To begin, take small amounts of pollen with food. Pay attention to your body, increasing the amount until you are taking about a teaspoon per day." While bee pollen is generally safe for consumption, it may trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Consult with your physician before adding pollen to your diet. n

Serenity Summer Skin

As the summer sun shines and schedules grow busier, finding equilibrium between work and wellness is essential, especially for the modern working woman. Amidst demanding responsibilities, allocating time for self-care is paramount. This summer, embrace a holistic approach to skincare and health with a personalized home routine designed to rejuvenate your body, nourish your skin, and restore your inner balance.

Nourish from within

Summer beauty begins with self-care rituals that prioritize hydration, nourishment, and protection. Start your day with a refreshing glass of lemon-infused water to hydrate and detoxify your body from within. Incorporate stress-relieving activities like yoga or meditation to promote overall wellbeing and a radiant complexion.

Lay the foundation for healthy skin

A crucial step in your summer skincare routine is cleansing your face twice a day. Opt for a gentle, non-drying cleanser to remove impurities, excess oil, and sunscreen buildup without stripping your skin's natural moisture barrier. Cleanse in the morning to refresh your skin and at night to remove makeup and pollutants accumulated throughout the day.

Elevate your routine

Invest in premium skincare products formulated with potent, clinically proven ingredients. Look for medical-grade skincare products containing antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and peptides to combat free-radical damage, hydrate the skin, and promote collagen synthesis.

Buff away dead skin cells

Regular exfoliation is the key to maintaining a smooth, bright complexion throughout the summer months. Incorporate a gentle

exfoliating scrub or chemical exfoliant into your weekly skincare routine to slough away dead skin cells and unclog pores. Avoid over-exfoliating, especially if you spend time outdoors, as it can increase sun sensitivity.

Shield your face from harmful rays

Sunscreen is non-negotiable year-round, but the summer is when UV radiation is at its peak. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is ideal and should be reapplied every two hours, especially when swimming or sweating. Don't forget to protect sensitive areas like your lips, ears, and the tops of your feet.

Lock in essential moisture

Hydrated skin is happy skin so don't skimp on moisturizer, even if your skin tends to be oily. Look for lightweight, oil-free formulas that provide hydration without feeling heavy or greasy. Hyaluronic acid-infused moisturizers are ideal for plumping and hydrating the skin, giving you that coveted dewy glow.

Use diet to fuel body and beauty

Nourish your skin from the inside out by incorporating a diet rich in antioxidantpacked fruits and vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, and hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumbers. These nutrient-rich foods combat inflammation, promote collagen production, and shield your skin from environmental damage.

Since your skin faces increased sun exposure and environmental stressors during the summer, prioritizing protein intake is also vital. Protein helps repair and rejuvenate skin cells damaged by UV radiation and other external factors, supporting skin regeneration and recovery. Including protein-rich foods in your diet— such as lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and seeds— supports your skin's natural repair processes

from within. Additionally, incorporating protein-rich skincare products containing peptides or amino acids into your beauty routine provides topical nourishment. By prioritizing protein intake both internally and externally, you can enhance your routine and maintain skin health and resilience throughout the season.

Boost your skincare arsenal

Incorporate serums containing antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid into your skincare routine. These powerhouse ingredients neutralize free radicals, brighten the complexion, and defend against UV-induced damage, helping you maintain youthful, radiant skin all summer long.

Nature’s soothing secrets

Keep a bottle of pure aloe vera gel on hand to soothe and hydrate sun-exposed skin. Aloe vera's cooling properties provide instant relief from sunburn, inflammation, and redness. Apply this summer skincare essential generously to sun-kissed skin for instant relief and accelerated healing.

Make a DIY turmeric face mask using turmeric powder, yogurt, and honey to create a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment. Turmeric's potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote a healthy overall complexion.

Your skin's best friends

Regular exercise improves circulation, promotes detoxification, and reduces stress levels, while adequate sleep allows your skin to repair and regenerate, all leading to a brighter complexion.

Remember to prioritize your skin’s health and vitality this summer. By incorporating at-home self-care rituals, choosing the right skincare products, and nourishing your skin from within, your glowing complexion will shine as brightly as the summer sun.

Sea the Glow With Carrageen Moss

When it comes to skincare, it seems there are always new ingredients to experiment with in the pursuit of flawless skin. Sea moss (often called carrageen moss or Irish moss), a nutrient-rich sea organism commonly found in deep water and used for thousands of years in various cultures as food and medicine, is gaining recent popularity for use in both wellness and beauty regimens. When ingested, sea moss—a product derived from red sea algae— is chock-full of nutrients, containing 92 of the 102 vitamins and minerals our bodies need which can heal a range of health issues. So, it’s no wonder that it promotes a perfect complexion.

Benefits in skincare

Inflammation-reducing: High concentrations of zinc and sulfur make sea moss helpful in reducing redness, irritation, and acne. The anti-inflammatory properties can also help soothe the skin from conditions like eczema.

Moisturizing: With gel-like consistency, the effectiveness of sea moss used topically has been compared to the likes of hyaluronic acid for plump, hydrated skin. In part, this is due to the high amounts of polysaccharides acting as thickening agents, forming a protective barrier over the skin that locks in moisture on the surface level.

Age-combatting: Jam-packed with antioxidants to help combat free radicals that are responsible for skin damage and premature aging and collagen, which is essential to skin elasticity, sea moss reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Brightening: Since it contains vitamin C, a potent antioxidant known to brighten skin, sea moss can improve overall radiance.

As a skincare product, sea moss can be incorporated into your routine as a gel moisturizer or mask, a nourishing soap, a brightening serum, or healing undereye patches. You can also add it as a supplement to smoothies or soups for healing from the inside out. And remember, consistency is key if you want to see results. n

Continuing the International Women's Day celebration conversation

Female Role Models Empowering Our Future

March 8 marked the 113th International Women’s Day, an annual celebration highlighting women’s achievements and continuing calls to action for gender equality and other pressing issues across the globe. The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, and Calabasas Chamber of Commerce celebrated the prominent all-female powerhouse currently leading our local government, hosting an impactful panel discussion led by Calabasas Chamber’s CEO Lisa Clayden. The event was held at the Agoura Hills Recreation and Event Center.

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Lindsey Horvath gave an inspirational keynote speech, emphasizing the importance and power of female leadership and sharing her journey in public service to her current position as part

of the first all-women board in L.A. County. She stressed how important women’s voices are now and always, no matter their age or background. Horvath, who also happens to be the Board of Supervisors’ youngest chair ever, represents L.A. County’s Third District, which encompasses most of the Santa Monica Mountains and San Fernando Valley.

Joining Horvath on the distinguished panel were Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub, Hidden Hills Mayor Eniko Gold, Westlake Village Mayor Pro Tem Kelly Honig, Agoura Hills Mayor Pro Tem Penny Sylvester, and Captain Jennifer Seetoo of the Malibu/ Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

Calabasas Style Magazine took the opportunity to continue the conversation with some of the panelists, who shared empowering perspectives as modern women in leadership.

102 Calabasas style

Lindsay Horvath

Supervisor

Third District of L.A. County

Q: What led you to pursue your leadership role?

Weintraub: I have always been involved in local government and have spent my entire career working in public policy. When the opportunity came to run for city council, I felt the best thing I could do with my professional skills is give back to my community.

Alicia Weintraub

Eniko Gold

Mayor Hidden Hills

Kelly Honig

Mayor Pro Tem Westlake Village

Penelope Sylvester

Mayor Pro Tem Agoura Hills

Jennifer Seetoo

Captain Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff's Station

Sylvester: When I moved with my family to Agoura Hills, I had already decided to take a break from my work as a motion picture film editor. I knew that if I wanted to become part of our new community then I would have to get involved. My first step was to volunteer at our local schools. When our youngest child graduated high school, I formed a company that offered a summer school program for students in the Las Virgenes Unified School District. But there was still more I wanted to do. The Agoura Hills Calabasas Community Center came calling, and I was appointed as an alternate board member. Shortly thereafter, I was appointed to the City’s Planning Commission, prior to my present position.

Gold: I grew up [in Hungary] without the basic rights we, in the United States, have and perhaps take for granted. So, I possess a unique appreciation, both for our freedoms, and for Democracy. At the beginning of the pandemic, I questioned my purpose and if I had given back enough to my community. And then … there were the people! I can’t say enough about the people of Hidden Hills. The support and kindness I received continues to be humbling. I also knew that there had been very few women ever on council, and no mothers on the current council, thus a large portion of our city, with their distinctive point of view, was not represented.

Honig: Westlake Village is 43 years old, and during its entire history as a city, it has always had women as council members. The original incorporation of the city in 1981 was brought about in no small part by Berniece Bennett, who served on the first WLV council. Women leaders have been and will continue to be an expected, valuable, and important part of Westlake Village, and I am proudly but the most recent example.

Q: What challenges have you faced as a female leader? How have you navigated them?

Weintraub: People have judged me for having children and working. I have navigated through this by having a strong support system and including my children in my work.

Gold: If I encounter an obstacle that I cannot overcome, I seek alternative routes and persevere on my journey. Maintaining focus and positivity is key. Gratitude has helped me through the toughest challenges of my life — and as our mayor. It stems

Calabasas style 103

Female Role Models

from having perspective by being well-informed and worldly, and never forgetting I'm in my position specifically to be of service to others.

Sylvester: On the whole, I have been very fortunate. I have always had women mentors to guide me and show me what needed to be done and how to achieve it. I was also lucky that when I worked in film, I worked as a member of a guild union that guaranteed equal pay for equal work. I believe that being in a union empowered me and protected me from discrimination.

Q: Why is it important for women to be in leadership roles?

Gold: Allow me to reframe your question: Why is it crucial for half of the population to be represented in leadership positions? By reframing the question, I've already provided a partial answer. Additionally, both men and women possess unique strengths; therefore, in our efforts to enhance society, both must contribute and be represented across all levels of decision-making.

Sylvester: Women are natural leaders; and while we are already in leadership roles in many sections of our society, we still need more female leaders in government. Each of us needs role models. The more visible women leaders become, the more they empower the generation coming behind them.

Weintraub: It is important for women to be represented and participate in decisions that impact them. It’s vital to show younger girls they can be leaders in any field they choose by seeing current women in those roles.

Q: What advice would you give the younger female generation aspiring to be leaders in their careers or communities?

Honig: The most important advice I can give you is to use your voice. Speak up! Share your opinion! What you think matters! Women who speak up are often labeled “bossy” or “not nice.” These same labels are never applied to men when they voice their opinions. Do not let this double standard deter you. If someone calls you “bossy,” that’s a compliment!

Weintraub: Ask questions, get involved, and build relationships with people who will support you professionally.

Sylvester: My grandmother gave me some advice that I would like to share: There’s nothing wrong with being strong and confident She embodied that philosophy and followed her dreams. She encouraged her grandchildren to do the same. So, like my grandmother, I would say: Believe in yourself, be prepared to work hard, and stand strong in whatever path you choose.

Gold: Dream big! The possibilities are truly endless. Ambition paired with a strong work ethic paves the way to success. Persevere relentlessly! Despite closed doors, persistence, courage, and self-belief will inevitably lead to new opportunities. Forge your support network. No one navigates their career and life solo. Authenticity is paramount in leadership roles and especially in politics. People crave leaders who will listen and remain true to their campaign commitments. n

In the rapidly evolving field of aesthetic medicine where the pursuit of all new things tends to turn into trends, Jenya Brant, MSN, NP, saw a strong need to emphasize what works and gives long-lasting results. Based on this very foundation of anatomy, physiology, and a deep understanding of classic beauty, Evoke Aesthetics was founded 11 years ago. Complicated aesthetic correction cases, also known as “previously botched,” dominated the focus of her practice in the first five years and became invaluable in understanding the benefits and limitations of most nonsurgical treatments, as well as how they behaved over time.

Jenya focuses her practice on advanced anti-aging techniques for the face and neck, utilizing not only traditional technologies and injectables but also providing regenerative treatments such as PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) and PRFM, which she believes are the future of aesthetics and medicine in general. Jenya defines beauty as the interdependence of each facial feature in a delicate state of balance and harmony and is best known for her methodology of enhancing individual beauty and handling the complicated correction cases. Today, patients travel across the United States to seek consultation and corrective treatments with her. Jenya completed her medical education with a Masters degree from Columbia University School of Nursing in New York City and has been in practice for 20 years. She received her training and mentorship from several renowned plastic surgeons in New York and Beverly Hills and continues to enrich her technique by keeping up to date on the latest advances. In 2013, she opened her private practice.

Jessica, a self-proclaimed introverted extrovert, had a shy disposition in her youth but also loved to express energy and joy as a high school cheerleader. Her father’s strong work ethic and mother’s organizational skills influenced her understanding of real-world responsibilities. Following her siblings’ lead, she received her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Cal Poly Pomona. Jessica began her career as an external auditor, working throughout California. Ready for more of a challenge, she switched her focus to municipal accounting with the City of Walnut, where she started as a financial analyst and was promoted to finance officer, overseeing the finance division and guiding the budgeting process for the city.

Further developing her personal goals, Jessica accepted her current position at LVMWD, where she also focuses on mentoring and developing her team. She leads by example, embodying respect, thoughtfulness, and empathy, while implementing her guiding principle: “How can I make this easier for you?” Jessica is currently enhancing her expertise by attaining a Certified Fraud Examiner license to aid in uncovering and preventing fraudulent financial activity. Jessica enjoys true crime podcasts, sushi, In N Out, and HIIT workouts, and she loves animals and the beauty of the Conejo Valley. 4232 Las Virgenes Rd., Calabasas. 818.251.2128. lvmwd.com. jcortez@lvmwd.com.

Summer GardeninG Embrace the Green Thumb With Your Kiddos

The warmth of summer is right around the corner, and it is the perfect time to step into the garden and cultivate a green haven with your little ones. Summer gardening isn't just about nurturing plants; it's a journey of discovery, learning, and bonding. Engaging your children in gardening activities fosters a love for nature, teaches responsibility, and instills valuable life skills. So, grab your gardening tools and start your adventure of summer gardening with your kiddos.

Planting seeds of curiosity

Begin by involving your littles in selecting seeds or young plants to cultivate. Encourage them to explore different varieties of flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables. This process not only educates them about different plants but also empowers them to make decisions and take ownership of their garden patch.

Learning through hands-on experience

Gardening is a hands-on activity that offers myriad learning opportunities for your children or grandchildren. From understanding the life cycle of plants to grasping the importance of soil, water, and sunlight, each gardening task unveils a new lesson. Allow your kiddos to get their hands dirty as they sow seeds, transplant seedlings, water plants, and weed the garden beds. Through these experiences, they develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and gain practical knowledge that extends far beyond the garden gate.

Nurturing responsibility and patience

Assign them age-appropriate tasks such as watering the garden, removing weeds, and monitoring plant health. By caring for living organisms, children learn the

importance of consistency, attentiveness, and perseverance. Celebrate each milestone together, whether it's the first sprout peeking through the soil or the ripe fruits ready for harvest, reinforcing their sense of accomplishment and nurturing their self-esteem.

Exploring creativity and imagination

Summer gardening is not just about cultivation; it's an opportunity for children to unleash their creativity and imagination. Encourage them to design their garden space, decorate plant pots, and create homemade plant markers using recycled materials. Let their imagination bloom as they envision fairy gardens, insect hotels, or colorful scarecrows to adorn their outdoor sanctuary. Cultivating creativity in the garden fosters a sense of ownership and transforms it into a magical realm where dreams take root alongside the plants.

Adventures in Summer Reading

Reading is the quintessential summer hobby. Encourage your kids to keep their minds engaged during their break from school by taking regular trips to the local library or perusing the aisles of a bookstore to find the perfect summer read. There are plenty of reward programs available where kids can earn prizes—from new books to ice cream treats—as incentives to get them started and keep them motivated. You can also create your own bingo card or reading journal to track progress and reward your child for a job well done.

Let your kids’ imaginations soar as they build a cozy fort or indoor reading nook for a designated calm and quiet space. Take your books outdoors to get some fresh air and read while enjoying a picnic at the park or beach. Get the whole family involved by sharing one chapter a night from a favorite for all ages, like the

Harry Potter series. Audiobooks are also a great option, especially for teens interested in learning a new language.

Introduce your youngest book worms to Eric Carle’s unforgettable collage illustrations in The Hungry Caterpillar and the whimsical rhymes of Dr. Seuss in The Cat in the Hat or pick up current top-seller Dragons Love Tacos. Early readers will feel confident in their newfound abilities with the Pete the Cat (My First I Can Read) collection. Chapter books like Amelia Bedelia and Captain Underpants are full of laughs for elementary readers, and classics by E.B. White and Roald Dahl bring magic and fantasy to life, brightening every imagination.

Leading by example is key, so show your enthusiasm by sharing your childhood favorites, and don’t forget to pick up something new to read for yourself. When it comes to reading, you really can’t go wrong. n

10 Ways to Beat the Summer

This summer is expected to be one of the hottest on record. Now, more than ever, it’s important to stay hydrated. Here are a few tips to help you keep your cool.

1

Our bodies consist of nearly 60% water, with the heart and brain around 73% and lungs a whopping 83%. It may sound counterintuitive, but we need to keep drinking water and other fluids to stay healthy. Drink at least eight cups per day to stay pleasantly lubricated.

2

Jump in the lake, pool, or ocean. When you come out, sit under a shady tree or beach umbrella.

3

Eat more fresh fruit. Hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumber, and tomatoes are especially helpful

since they contain at least 90% water. Avoid too much alcohol or caffeine, which can be dehydrating.

4

Lick a frozen popsicle. The less sugar the better. Make your own with fresh fruit, such as strawberries and coconut, or try a veggie/fruit combo. Blend, freeze, and eat. Or simply freeze whole grapes, blueberries, or raspberries and pop ’em like candy for a healthy treat.

5 Wear breathable, loose-fitting, light- colored clothing. Man-made fabrics like nylon are great for sweat wicking. Linen allows great airflow and is anti-microbial, so it won’t smell if it absorbs moisture.

6

Tend the garden and work outside during the cooler summer hours before 11:00 a.m. and after 3:00 p.m. Go on a night hike and howl at the moon.

7

Consume light meals. Heavy foods weigh you down, while lighter fare keeps you cooler. Try cold summer soups, such as gazpacho. They taste sublime and help you stay light on your feet.

8 Signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, headaches, dizziness, and thirst. Sports drinks with electrolytes help replenish lost salts, sugars, and fluids.

9

Dip your feet and ankles in cool water. Even a bathtub will do. Then, apply a cold, wet towel to pulse points on your wrists and neck. Ooh la la, c’est magnifique!

10

Refrigerate your skin products for a few hours before use. Then, spray a little facial mist or apply cool coconut lotion. You’ll smell great and beat the heat. n

VANDERPUMP DOGS COMFORT & CUDDLE AT BELMONT VILLAGE

Belmont Village Calabasas and Vanderpump Dogs teamed up for an incredible comfort and cuddle event for seniors on April 11. The heartwarming event gave participants an opportunity to snuggle up to several senior dogs who were available for adoption and also shop at the Vanderpump pop-up. Studies show that seniors reap many life-enhancing rewards by having a four-legged friend by their side. Pets can help lower blood pressure, reduce chances of depression and loneliness, increase mobility and independence, and ease anxiety and pain. Senior animals are gentler and often already trained, making them perfect companions for seniors. Co-founded by Lisa Vanderpump of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2016, the Vanderpump Dog Foundation is a dog rescue organization that works domestically and internationally to help create a better world for dogs globally. The event was organized by Seniors for Seniors.

Supercar Sunday Porsche Marque Days

Car show season is here! Spring and summer, warm weather, dry roads, and long days... everything a car enthusiast dreams of. If you are reading this, you live very close to one of the longest running weekly car shows in the world, Supercar Sunday. Supercar Sunday, a weekly car show, has been going on since the early 2000s, and many believe it was the paradigm for all other “cars and coffee”style events around the globe. Starting back in the early days, the goal was to get friends together to celebrate the automobile on a Sunday morning. The only criterion at Supercar Sunday was a good attitude. You didn’t even need a car to attend, just a love for cars and people. Fast forward 20-plus years, and the event is still going on and bringing the same diverse crowd of cars and enthusiasts.

Supercar Sunday is presented and sponsored by Porsche Woodland Hills, and the second Sunday of every month is Porsche Marque Day with a separate parking area to highlight Porsches of all vintages. From the newest models to the classics, it is always an incredible showing of cars. Of course, all other makes and models are welcome. On the Porsche Marque Day, Porsche Woodland Hills has vehicles on display, donuts, and “giveaways” as well as a full staff ready to assist with any of your Porsche questions. Consider this a formal invitation to come to Supercar Sunday. Bring a friend, bring the family, bring a cool car, or ride a bike over—we would love to have you as part of the community. For more information, visit supercarsunday.com. n

CITY OF CALABASAS CELEBRATES CITY CLERK

*See

The City of Calabasas recently recognized their incredible city clerk, Maricela Hernandez, for her retirement. Maricela started working with the City of Calabasas in July of 2012. As city clerk, her duties were essential to local government, including administering municipal elections, storing and recording the city’s official records, and coordinating public meetings.

Prior to working at the City of Calabasas, Maricela served as a city clerk for Seaside in Monterey County following her position as clerk of the board of directors with the Riverside Transit Agency. Though she is retiring from the City of Calabasas, she will continue working for San Diego Community Power in Oceanside, where she has accepted a position as clerk of the board of directors.

Some of Maricela’s notable accomplishments include implementing an online-based agenda creation process; transitioning the city’s general municipal election date to align with statewide elections; overhauling the city’s council's protocols, agenda, and records management program; managing commission appointments; spearheading the creation of the Mayor’s Youth Council; and establishing the Passport Acceptance Facility.

“Simply put, the City of Calabasas has been able to accomplish these and so many other vital tasks required of a well-run city as a result of Mari’s outstanding work ethic, professionalism, and ability to innovate. Exploring Wine for Non-Wine Drinkers

Though it may be hard for wine lovers to believe, there are some people in the world who don’t enjoy sipping a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon or a perfectly crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Even if you aren’t well-versed in the world of wines, we’ve curated a list of a few varietals that make a great starting point to begin your winedrinking journey, with a comprehensive overview of the basics—the difference between sweet and dry wines, earthy notes compared to fruit-forward flavors, and how a red wine compares to white wine. To wine lovers, non-wine drinkers are just those that haven’t found the right wine yet. And while we know that’s not always the case, we hope you’ll consider giving a few of these suggestions a try.

What wine should I drink if I’m not a wine drinker?

Riesling

One of the best introductory wines for those new to wine drinking is riesling. This grape is very light and aromatic, which produces white wines ranging in style from bone-dry to very sweet. The slight sweetness and fruity aroma can help non-wine drinkers get acclimated to the taste of wine. In fact, a lot of veteran wine drinkers will pass on a glass of riesling since it can almost be too sweet for their well-trained palate. However, a crisp, sweet, light wine may appease newcomers who typically prefer a fruity cocktail as they dip their toes in the water.

Depending on where it’s produced, you may find dry versions of Riesling. But, in most cases when you’re ordering a glass of this varietal, you’ll receive

150 Calabasas style

A Beginner’s Guide to Finding Your Perfect Pour

Calabasas style 151

something on the sweeter end of the spectrum. Sometimes considered a dessert wine, its fruitier flavor profile is an optimal place to begin for those overwhelmed by the more intense, fullbodied flavors of a red wine.

Pinot Grigio

Pinot grigio is another delicate, lighter white wine that tends to be a bit drier than a riesling, but still offers a bit of sweetness. It is among the most popular white wines in the world as it’s easily palatable and pairs well with a variety of different foods. A light-bodied varietal, pinot grigio features notes of apple, lemon, and peach—another fruity flavor profile—making it a great beginner wine as it can sometimes be almost “plain.”

So, while riesling can offer some sweetness that packs a punch of flavor, pinot grigio’s subtleties and freshness are reminiscent of a clean slate in the realm of wines.

Pinot Noir

Syrah

Syrah is a bit of a step up from a pinot noir in that it’s more of a full-bodied red wine with medium-high tannins, which means that it is usually on the dryer side. It also has a slightly higher alcohol content, which often lends itself to the flavor profile. This wine tends to be darker in overall color than a pinot noir, but it is also a bit more fruit-forward. It can also have a bit of spice to it depending on the label or region from which you drink.

Pinot noir is a very “safe” red wine as it’s not as full-bodied as a lot of other reds and offers a light, fruity taste that can be easy on the palate.

Typically, people that don’t like wine seem to gravitate more towards white varietals when given a choice, but a glass of a silky smooth pinot noir can come as a pleasant surprise. The combination of bright fruit flavors paired with a lower alcohol content make a quality glass the perfect option to pair with any meal.

The one thing you’ll want to be aware of is that pinot noir is typically a dry wine, which can be a turn-off to non-wine drinkers who prefer a sweet drink. At the same time, the dryness of the wine can be exactly what a person is looking for. It really all depends on your tastes and preferences—much like how beer drinkers typically stay away from sweeter alcoholic beverages, while those who enjoy cocktails, hard ciders, or seltzers may gravitate towards a sweet wine, aligning with their drinking preferences.

Overall, syrah is still a great choice for a non-wine drinker who’s looking to sip on a glass of red wine with dinner. It goes great with many different foods, especially red meats, and is found around the world.

If you try these wines and still don’t find the one for you, at the very least, you’ve opened your mind to the world of wine. However, we encourage you to continue your journey, trying different wine varieties, different labels, and wines from different regions of the world. You never know…you might just find one out there that really speaks to you. n

Spicy Tuna Stacked Roll

Ingredients

2 (4- to 6-oz.) sushi-grade tuna steaks, cubed

3 tbsp. + 2 tsp. low-sodium soy sauce or tamari, plus more for serving

1 tbsp. toasted sesame oil

1 to 2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes

1 green onion, thinly sliced

1 tbsp. toasted sesame seeds, plus more for serving

1 cup cooked sushi rice or other short-grain white or brown rice

2 tbsp. rice vinegar

1 tsp. sugar

1/2 tsp. fine pink Himalayan salt

1/3 cup avocado oil mayonnaise

1 to 2 tbsp. sriracha

1 toasted nori sheet, cut into thin strips

1 cup diced cucumber

1 cup mashed avocado Microgreens, for serving ½ cup wonton crisps (optional)

Instructions

In a medium bowl, combine tuna, three tablespoons of soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, green onion, and sesame seeds. Toss to mix well. In a separate medium bowl, combine rice with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Toss to mix well. In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, sriracha, and remaining two teaspoons of soy sauce.

In a dry one-cup measure, layer ¼ cup of tuna, then a quarter of the nori. Add ¼ cup each of cucumber, then avocado. Pack in ¼ cup of seasoned rice. Invert the cup onto a plate and tap the bottom of the cup to release the stack. Then, carefully wiggle the cup off the stack. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to create four stacks.

Top each stack with microgreens, wonton crisps (if desired), and sesame seeds. Serve with spicy mayo and more soy sauce on the side for dipping.

Summer Recipes

Chilled Cucumber Avocado Soup

Ingredients

1 large cucumber, peeled and chopped into pieces

1 avocado

1 jalapeno, trimmed and deseeded

½ lemon, juiced

3 tbsp. fresh cilantro (use ¼ cup for more flavor)

½ tsp. salt

½ cup chopped pineapple, for serving

½ cup chopped cucumber, for serving

Instructions

Combine the cucumber, avocado flesh, jalapeno, lemon juice, cilantro, salt, and ½ cup water in a blender. Blend until smooth, adding more water as needed. Taste, and adjust seasonings as desired.

Chill the soup for at least an hour (preferably 2 or more) in the fridge before serving. Serve with chopped pineapple and cucumber.

Notes

• For more lemon flavor, add some lemon zest in addition to the juice.

• If you want the soup to be spicier, use a second jalapeno.

• For a variation, use fresh dill instead of cilantro.

• Other topping ideas include fresh mango, feta cheese, or croutons.

Designing the Home With Art

Style Trends

hoosing art can be intimidating. After all, galleries are not always warm and fuzzy places. Even though I have a background in art and design, it can still be challenging to find pieces that I resonate with. When it comes to art, I always advise my friends and clients to start with what they like.

Making a few trips to galleries and museums is a great way to discover your personal taste. Art is not always a painting. Art can be anything that elevates the ambience of a space, adding soul to a home. One of the first questions I ask is: What are the pieces you wish to showcase that are already in your collection? I often get the answer that existing pieces are either not the right size or are in the wrong color of frame.

There are many different approaches to consider when it comes to how to display and frame art. Framing can either elevate a piece or overpower it. A frame should match not only the artwork but the space around it. Selecting the right kind of glass is important as well. I always opt for museum-grade, nonreflective art glass. It’s impossible to completely appreciate a piece if the details are obscured by a reflective glare. Art can be displayed in many ways. Well-placed alcoves, tabletop easels, and pedestals are some great options to display to the greatest effect.

Dining room

During my last trip to the Paris flea market, I found five panels of 19th-century chinoiserie wallpaper. Two panels had water damage, so I decided to frame three eight-foot panels in goldleaf frames, creating a dramatic focal-point wall in my own dining room.

Living room

In my recent Lake Sherwood Project, I chose bold artwork to take the lead in the living room space. I selected the pictured pieces by Yunhee Min and Jim Dine. Bright colors and broad strokes are wonderful for catching the eye and creating focal points that draw people into an area.

Formal living room

In New York on one of my projects in a historical building with high ceilings, I introduced a dramatic tapestry paired with contemporary photography to add layers of complexity, while keeping a thread of history.

Hallways

I love architectural etching art, botanical sketches, and line drawings for hallways. Gallery hallways have the greatest visual effect when the multiple works have a similar theme or color but different sizes, textures, mediums, and depths to create visual highs and lows.

Kitchen

For me the kitchen is a surprise area for beautiful pieces. I love the unexpected. I’m also in my kitchen for hours each day so I want my favorite pieces to be in places where I will have numerous opportunities to appreciate them.

Primary suite

At a home in the Wilshire corridor, I chose a large-scale textured wallpaper in soft hues to form the basis for the dreamy color

palette of the entire suite in nudes, beige off-whites, and gentle champagnes.

Choosing art for your home can be stressful, but trust me, it’s all about finding what speaks to you. From striking paintings to elegant wallpaper, art brings soul to every space. Whether it’s your dining room, primary suite, or even the kitchen, there’s always room for art to shine. So, let your imagination run free and fill your home with art you love. n

OPEN YOUR BIG DOORS TO DESIGN AT

AGOURA SASH &DOOR

As the trend for larger windows and doors grows in 2024, the vertical stiles and horizontal rails of their frames continue to shrink. Homeowners still long to let nature in, blurring the line even further between outdoors and in. Space-saving pocket doors that magically disappear upon opening make areas even more accessible and bright.

Bi-folding doors also add a novel twist providing wider entryways between rooms. And multisliding and bi-folding patio doors, which permit as much as 90 percent of the outside scenery to show, allow more golden sunlight and glimmering moonlight to shine through. The good news for the homeowners and builders is that now you can choose from various manufacturers to meet your budget.

While current trends enable more light to stream in, darker materials—such as bronze and anodized aluminum, fiberglass, and clad material—have become quite popular. The clever use of wall or remote openers to automate patio doors continues to expand, as does door size.

Window manufacturers also offer more colors and custom options than ever before. From obscureyet-elegant glass inlays to sleek, contemporary lines, front doors are becoming increasingly more stylish than in recent years.

Seeing is believing. Come visit one of the area’s largest showrooms to view energy-efficient, fashion-forward doors and windows at Agoura Sash & Door in Westlake Village.

Outdoor Luxury Tailored to Your Lifestyle

Pacific Patio Furniture

As a counterpoint to our increasingly digital world, Pacific Patio Furniture provides a hands-on experience at its showroom in Agoura Hills. Customers can look at finishes, feel fabric samples, try out their favorite patio furniture, and discuss design ideas with knowledgeable staff to create their ideal backyard ensemble.

Pacific Patio carries over 17,000 square feet of quality sofas, loveseats, sectionals, dining tables, umbrellas, and more made of fashionable and durable aluminum, iron, teak, and polymer and woven and Sunbrella fabrics. Innovative brands include award-winning Brown Jordan, one of the world’s finest makers of meticulously designed outdoor furniture and accessories. Paying homage to the brand’s beginnings in 1945 through materiality, innovation, and craftsmanship, designer Anne Marie Vering collaborated on Brown Jordan’s Oscar collection, using rope as a key element to create striking yet nostalgic silhouettes suited for indoors and out. This full line includes dining and lounge options with plush cushions for designer comfort.

Family-owned Pacific Patio Furniture first opened its doors in 2013. Celebrating over 10 years in business, it’s still growing strong. Outdoor living spaces are being utilized as additional spaces with people investing in their outdoor areas even more. “Living in Southern California, the weather allows for nearly year-round outdoor entertainment, with extended room outdoors,” notes owner Theresa Elkins. “We felt a need to serve our community and provide luxury outdoor furniture and accessories at competitive prices.”

The company continues to grow by seeking out the newest design trends. This year, maintenance-free furniture is gaining popularity, as seen in its timeless POLYWOOD® Edge collection. As chic as it is classic, the exceptional craftsmanship boasts an uncompromised aesthetic, crisp angles, and clean lines—with no annual maintenance required. Paired with plush Sunbrella cushions, the set combines comfort with aesthetic appeal, as well as being maintenance free, durable, and sustainable. Another great low-maintenance option is the Seattle Collection, which features the rustic look of antique, grey-teak patio seating. Currently available in three frame finishes—rustic teak, salvaged lumber, and reclaimed barnwood—the frame is made of thick-gauge aluminum that’s powder coated to look and feel like wood. You can easily clean the surface with a garden hose, soft cloth, and mild soapy water. If you’d prefer to “mix and match,” that’s fine, too. Pacific Patio believes there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to your backyard and will gladly customize the layout to fit your particular taste and budget.

“We enjoy spending time with our customers to better understand their needs,” shares Elkins. The desire for low-maintenance patio furniture, for example, arises frequently. Customers want their outdoor space to be a breeze. They’d rather spend less time on maintenance and more time doing what they love, such as barbecues and lounging by the pool with family and friends. Fortunately, Pacific Patio offers plenty of styles that are both chic and easy to maintain.

Customer service remains a top priority at Pacific Patio. The onsite sales staff can help you discover your ideal look. First, decide whether you want a modern, transitional, or traditional style. Next, consider the size of your backyard. Then, think about frame color and fabric. When you’re ready to shop for the perfect outdoor furniture, visit Pacific Patio’s Agoura showroom for expert design services and a stress-free experience. n

Factor Home & Design continues to transform homes and businesses into exquisite showcases as it has for the past three decades. Since 1988, homeowners, architects, and interior designers have made this Woodland Hills showroom their first stop when shopping for porcelain and ceramic tile, granite and marble slabs, and mosaics, hardwood and laminate flooring, as well as accessories and fixtures representing the finest materials available in the world for every type of surface for the home.

Factor HD also has many options of roofing materials, allowing customers to choose from metal roofing systems, slate tile, composite shake, cement tile, and clay tile as they find the right fit for the style of the property.

With years of experience as a contractor within the high-end home market and a co-owner of Factor HD Vladimir Factor is constantly pushing the level to innovate and create new ways to design and install. “Factor Home & Design was created to give people the vision that anything is possible and that there are new creative ways to make a space look unique,” says Vladimir. “Our passion for creativity goes beyond the home or space—to a place where only the wildest of ideas can come to reality.”

The passion and high attention to detail allows Factor HD to excel beyond the normal means of construction and its finishes. Their goal is to turn ideas into pieces of art and create an experience for the client that will be unforgettable. When asked what makes the company so successful, they explain that there are four main ingredients Factor HD has crafted in making their “secret sauce”: passion, experience, quality of work, and knowledge/understanding.

Vladimir feels that the industry is changing at a rapid rate, mostly due to the fact that technology is advancing so quickly. “Design trends are constantly emerging,” says Vladimir. “It’s so exciting to be able to bring new, innovative ways to create custom finishes within the interior or exterior of a space, and the sky is the limit.”

Factor HD is a full-service company that provides design, project supervision, and technical expertise for many different kinds of projects. Their team is made up of general contractors, designers, construction managers, and engineers who take full responsibility for the daily supervision of the construction site as well as the management of vendors. They maintain an open line of communication between all parties for the duration of the project. Additionally, they assume the responsibility of applying for building permits and ensure direct personnel are onsite to manage schedules and keep accurate records. Clients know they can count on Factor HD to get the work done promptly and on-budget while providing the ability, experience, and cutting-edge technology and equipment necessary—guaranteeing a successful building experience. n

Natural Stone Restoration

Old World Craftsmanship Meets State-of-the-Art Technology

Making a difference since 1993

For more than three decades, Natural Stone Restoration in Tarzana has kept clients’ stone floors and other stone needs in tip-top shape. From marble flooring to granite kitchen counters, they’ve become the go-to experts, promptly reproducing treasured finishes through deep cleaning, polishing, and sealing.

Natural stones, such as marble, granite, travertine, slate, and limestone, generally take millions of years to form within the earth. Once the material is fabricated into a slab for installation, however, it becomes vulnerable to staining and etching. Natural Stone Restoration helps keep the stone properly maintained. They’ll even show clients how to care for stone in between visits to avoid costly restorations in the future.

Owner Isaac Carasso notes, “Our trained experts meticulously restore each client’s natural stone. Other stone restoration companies even come to us for advice. We guarantee our work. If you don’t love it, we’re not leaving until you do.”

Making marble shine

“Marble is one of the surfaces we see most often,” explains Carasso. “We frequently meet with clients planning to replace their older-looking marble. They quickly discover our polishing alone does the trick, saving thousands of dollars.”

178 Calabasas style

Restoring polished marble or natural stone involves the removal of scratches and/or damage from the stone’s surface via mechanical abrasion, known as diamond grinding. This technique involves large amounts of water, which can damage your wood and carpet if the abrasion is not properly performed. A flamed finish can be restored with the same technique used when initially processing the tile or slab. This involves burning the stone to allow the crystals to “pop,” creating its unique finish. These practices require meticulous work by master technicians, like the experts at Natural Stone Restoration.

Limestone and granite restoration

“We relish our clients’ aha! moment when they first see their sparkling floors,” remarks Carasso. “Our cleaning tool removes dirt and grime collected from the pits of the limestone. Cleaning grout lines reveals a much brighter floor. We can also eliminate any chip or scratch or restore a broken piece of your granite countertop.”

Should certain tiles appear higher than others, grinding down the excess can achieve a more level surface. If you’ve noticed dull spots in highly trafficked areas, they can repair these surfaces by honing or polishing the stone with a fine abrasive to produce the desired finish.

Helping the old look new again

Travertine has been used for centuries, as far back as Roman times when around 3.5 million cubic feet of it was used to construct the Colosseum. The material recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. Although its Swiss-cheese-like structure is filled and polished, it’s still susceptible to new holes. Natural Stone Restoration can clean the dirt that accumulates in these crevices and fill cracks with strong and virtually undetectable polyester resin.

This trusted company ensures that residential and commercial clients throughout Ventura and Los Angeles counties receive the best restoration possible. When you’re ready to refresh the stone in your home or business, Natural Stone Restoration can return it to its original elegance in no time at all. n

BRING THE Outdoors IN

Ecuadorian environmentalist and indigenous Waorani woman Nemonte Nenquimo helped protect 500,000 acres of her ancestral home in the Amazonian rainforest from oil extraction. Although we can’t all live in a rainforest as spectacular as Nenquimo’s, we can still connect deeply with nature in our own homes, and by utilizing principles of biophilic interior design, we can feel more vital and in touch with Mother Earth.

The term biophilia means “the love of living things” in ancient Greek. In modern interior design and architecture, it refers to merging artistry, psychology, and biology to create living ecosystems inside that reflect the outer world. Think of it as forest bathing in your own home. By connecting with our natural world, we carry a sense of joy and calm into our daily living space.

From indoor gardens to cascading waterfalls of light, designers bring a sense of the outside world in. This includes bamboo finishes, tropical plants, water elements, and other earthy textures. Biophilia was popularized by American biologist

Edward O. Wilson during the 1980s in reaction to unhealthy urbanization. Although Frank Lloyd Wright never used the term, he certainly incorporated many of its precepts into his architecture at Fallingwater and elsewhere.

Natural elements foster a sense of wonder and even inspire creativity. Soft lighting enhances our moods. Neurodiverse family members, a term coined in the 1970s for people whose minds process information differently, such as those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and beyond, can greatly benefit from these types of environments. They reduce sensory overload, which can be especially troubling to those on the autism spectrum.

Think outside the box. How about a dining table with an herb garden growing in the center? Plant a wall of trees in your living room. Simply add more eco-friendly elements—such as clay, cork, wood, or rattan—or calming blues and greens to enhance your quality of life. Create your own mini rainforest, minus the mosquitoes. The possibilities are as endless as the moonlit sky.

Sustainable Living

Making Your Home Eco-Friendly

Living sustainably is becoming increasingly important as we look for ways to reduce our impact on the environment and protect our planet for future generations. One of the best ways to start living sustainably is by making your home a greener place. Here are a few ways to achieve that:

Reduce energy

Making your home more eco-friendly starts with optimizing energy usage. Start by conducting an energy audit to pinpoint areas for improvement. Swap out old incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient LED lights, which use less electricity and have longer lifespans. Installing programmable thermostats can help manage heating and cooling systems, cutting down on energy waste. Opt for energy-efficient products like Energy Star-rated appliances and window treatments designed to regulate your home's temperature. In Calabasas, you can take advantage of city resources for energy efficiency, like the Energy Upgrade California program, which offers a list of trusted contractors to assist residents.

Conserve water

Water conservation is another critical aspect of sustainable living. Install low-flow faucets and showerheads to minimize water usage without compromising on functionality. Fix leaks promptly to prevent wastage, and consider harvesting rainwater for non-potable uses like watering plants and flushing toilets. Additionally, opt for water-saving appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines that consume less water per cycle, thus reducing overall consumption.

Invest in solar energy

Finally, another way to make your home more sustainable is by investing in solar energy. Solar panels are becoming more affordable and can be used to generate electricity or heat water for your home. By using solar energy, you can reduce your dependence on fossil fuels and reduce your carbon footprint. There are many solar energy providers in Calabasas, offering a variety of options for residents to choose from. Before making a decision, it's important to consider factors such as the amount of sun your home receives, the orientation of your roof, and your energy usage. n

Serving Calabasas for nearly two decades, Epoxy Power by BMI is dedicated to delivering top-quality flooring solutions paired with a team that goes above and beyond to provide next-level customer satisfaction. Bringing durability and style to garage floors, backyards, driveways, walls, and more in homes across Southern California—from Valencia to Malibu and Manhattan Beach to Camarillo, Epoxy Power recently extended its guarantee on polyaspartic-coated garage flooring options, doubling its 10-year warranty to 20 years. Revitalizing floors can be simple with the help of Epoxy Power’s knowledgeable associates who are available to answer any questions and provide complimentary in-home or virtual estimates with detailed quotes.

Eco-friendly and affordable

Impact-resistant epoxy offers the perfect solution for long-lasting, durable flooring that won’t show signs of wear and tear from heavy traffic at a price that won’t break the bank. Epoxy Power’s highly trained and insured installers use only the highest quality materials to ensure minimal waste and maximum sustainability. Since no

harsh cleaning chemicals are needed, the flooring produces far less waste than other options—making it both eco-friendly and cost-effective. Plus, Epoxy Power uses the latest and greatest epoxy resin that doesn’t flake and pollute the environment.

A variety of options

From elegant, graveled coatings popular in homes and office buildings to the strongest mortar options, Epoxy Power offers a wide array of coatings to suit any space. Selfdispersing epoxy with quartz provides excellent anti-slip properties for high-traffic areas, while self-leveling epoxy creates a smooth surface ideal for garages, homes, and offices. Devoid of hidden bumps or cracks, these surfaces also alleviate the risk of accidents and provide a more sanitary environment, eliminating crevices where dirt or germs can hide.

Resurfacing pool decks

After years of direct sunlight, pool decks often become discolored and brittle over time—especially in sunny Southern California. Most contractors construct decks using porous substrates that allow water and mold to penetrate the billions of tiny holes, ultimately destroying the surface and costing thousands of dollars

to remodel. Pool-deck coatings help protect against stains and damage, prolonging the life of concrete, wood, and tile decks. The technicians at Epoxy Power can revitalize pool areas by installing one of the most durable floor systems on the market, using vinyl flakes available in a variety of colors, textures, and chipping effects.

Enjoy a myriad of benefits

With easy-to-clean, sanitary, and waterand stain-resistant epoxy coatings, Epoxy Power’s flooring remains the ideal solution for both residential and commercial use. As a family-owned and operated business, Epoxy Power by BMI is committed to providing seamless service with a smile to Calabasas residents and the greater Los Angeles area. With their current 20year warranty and single-day installation process for indoor flooring, it only makes sense to trust the experts at Epoxy Power for all flooring needs. n

The Silent Storytellers What our homes say about us

Our homes, within the quiet confines of our walls, whisper secrets of our deepest selves. They are not mere structures of brick and mortar but memoirs written in the unique language of home styling. They resonate with our choices, values, paths we have traveled, and even our dreams.

As we step inside, the atmosphere sets the stage for the story of our lives. Is it a realm of minimalist order or a cozy sanctuary filled with eclectic treasures? Our stylistic choices, color schemes, and decor reveal our essence. Minimalism reflects a preference for simplicity and practicality, while a vibrant home suggests a love for experiences and cherished memories. An expansive kitchen suggests a love for cooking and hosting. Overflowing bookshelves hint at a passion for reading or a thirst for knowledge. And a dedicated office or studio speaks volumes about a remote worker or a creative soul seeking inspiration.

The often overlooked details enrich our story, similar to the subtle literary devices used by novelists to develop characters. Each item, from fridge magnets to ancestral vases, adds depth,

narrating our past. These personal artifacts reveal not just who we are, but also our origins and perhaps our future paths. However, every home harbors its hidden corners: the drawers, closets, or the cluttered room concealed from guests. They embody our common humanity—the private aspects of our lives, less polished for public view. These are the anchors, reflecting our shared struggles, hidden dreams, and postponed ambitions.

Like us, our homes constantly evolve. From adding a new plant to rearranging furniture, each change reflects our journey. They are living stories, adapting to our milestones, sorrows, and dreams. This ongoing transformation turns our homes into ever-changing records of our growth. Our homes are more than mere structures; they are vivid storytellers of our unique journeys. They hold our past, present, and the future we envision. Understanding this narrative requires more than a passing glance. It demands a mindful acknowledgment of the details, an appreciation for the effort and affection invested, and, most importantly, a deep reverence for the individuality they represent. So, the next time you step across your own threshold, take a moment to pause and reflect...What story does your home share about you? n
