NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR LEE GOLDBERG THOUGHT IT A CRIME TO NOT FEATURE OUR COMMUNITIES AS THE BACKDROP OF SOME SERIOUSLY SUSPENSEFUL FICTION.
“The jurisdiction of the Lost Hills sheriff's station was bordered by Ventura County to the west and northwest, the City of Los Angeles to the east and northeast, and Santa Monica Bay to the south. Within those borders, the sheriff was the law in the Santa Monica Mountains and the communities of Malibu, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Calabasas, where the station was located.
Eve’s drive back to Mintner’s house took her west on the Ventura Freeway, straight
across their jurisdiction, then south on Kanan Dume Road, toward the center of it. The first thing she noticed when she arrived was that Duncan had strung yellow crime scene tape along the fence post stubs around Sherwood Mintner’s property.” (Bone Canyon)
California is Lee Goldberg’s beloved home state. The entertainment business runs through the veins of this son of an anchorman and a newspaper columnist model, and has firmly set Goldberg’s feet in both the television and literary
worlds. Born and raised in Northern California, he moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA in 1980, putting himself through school as a freelance journalist. He published his first book while still a UCLA student, since then adding almost forty books, numerous television writing & producing credits, and two Edgar Award nominations from the Mystery Writers of America to his established résumé.
Goldberg’s careers as novelist and television writer merged after penning

eight books in the Diagnosis Murder novel series based on the hit CBS TV mystery that he also wrote and produced. That was followed by writing fifteen bestselling novels based on the Monk series from the point of view of the female assistant. This, and co-authoring seven books with Janet Evanovich, influenced him to masterfully craft a quickly paced police crime drama series from the point of view of a female named Eve Ronin the “youngest homicide detective in the history of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”
Goldberg concedes many Los Angeles based police procedurals have been written by “far better writers than me: Joseph Wambaugh, Michael Connelly, and so many T.V. shows have been shot here. What can I say about Los Angeles that hasn’t been said. Well, I hadn’t seen Calabasas, Agoura, Hidden Hills, Malibu, written about much… and Lost Hills. I just thought there was so much potential for storytelling in the jurisdiction and I could write twenty books set here.”
Goldberg has resided in the Westridge gated community of Calabasas for 20 years, serving as its HOA President for over a decade, making him well versed in the local politics & cultures of the many gated communities and surrounding areas of Hidden Hills, Calabasas, Malibu, Topanga, and Agoura. The Eve Ronin series are mainly set in Calabasas and mirror controversies based in our area. This includes the globally reported Kobe Bryant plane crash, mysterious death of Mitrice Richardson, sniper shootings in Malibu Creek State Park, Mel Gibson assaults and DUI arrests; to issues that remain localized, such as the tattooed secret cliques & sexism within the Sheriff’s Department.
Fascinated by “the intersection of reality and fiction and how one attempts to live up to idealized versions of ourselves,” Goldberg embarked on writing novels from the point of view of a female sleuth. The character
of Homicide Detective Eve Ronin didn’t grow out of his own personal experience, rather some of her attitudes, strengths and weaknesses come from his 26 year old Calabasas raised daughter. The character of Ronin’s mother was shaped by Goldberg’s own mother who was a flirtatious model named as one of the 10 Sexiest Women in San Francisco when he was a child. She also worked as a society column journalist who never achieved and was bothered by the success of her son, which leads him to confess “in many ways, Eve Ronin is me writing about my own mom.”
Lost Hills is the first book of the crime fiction series set in Calabasas. We are introduced to Eve Ronin after L.A. County Sheriff Lansing promotes her to be the youngest female homicide detective in the Lost Hills Sheriff’s department’s history. Today the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is the largest sheriff's department not only in the United States, but in the World. It employs over 20,000 employees with 10,915 sworn deputies and 9,244 civilian staff. Detective Ronin’s promotion is resented by the entire department as it comes as the result of her leveraging her popularity in the press after the posting of a video of her off-duty arrest of a movie star assaulting a woman in a restaurant parking lot on Mulholland. The media labels her “Deathfist'' at a time when the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is plagued by

scandal. Ronin negotiates her viral popularity as a rogue hero to secure a coveted position as a homicide detective at the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station in Calabasas.
Detective Ronin has a lot to learn and justify among her badgemates, and her chance comes when she and her almost retired partner Duncan Pavone are called to the blood-splattered home of a missing single actress mother and her two kids on a cul-de-sac in Topanga Canyon. The pressure to resolve the triple murder and capture a possible killer establishes her instincts and tenacity to find justice for her victims all while placing her locally in restaurants, streets, & businesses like the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, the Commons, and the Santa Monica Mountains.
Lost Hills was such a critical success, that Lee Goldberg followed it with the fast-paced sequel Bone Canyon. The second novel begins with the discovery of scattered bones off Latigo Canyon Road in the aftermath of a catastrophic wildfire in the Santa Monica Mountains. The remains are identified of a young woman who went missing six years earlier after she and a friend reported being gang-raped on a Malibu beach. After the evidence points to a group of tattooed cops, Ronin faces unceasing resentment and obstruction from fellow deputies and her supervisors for violating the unspoken code of silence that protects fellow officers.
Celebrity residents are described during the politically tense and risky murder investigations, with Ronin loudly opposing pitches from Hollywood agent Linwood Taggert who lives in Hidden Hills and wants to option her life story due to the celebrity from the Lost Hills case. In her unmarked Ford Explorer
police vehicle, she drives the familiar route “on the freeway to the Lost Hills exit, where the new six-lane, $37 million overpass did double duty as the official gateway to Calabasas. The city’s logo, a red-tailed hawk flying over the hills, was sculpted onto white pillars in the center of the bridge and CITY OF CALABASAS was etched on the broad footing at the off-ramp.”
In Gated Prey, a rash of crimes send Detective Eve Ronin into the gated
know what it looks like beyond the front door, but everything else is real… and if you have enough truth, people get hooked in and they buy it, suspending their disbelief and go with you for the ride.” The truth is there are no homicide detectives in the Lost Hills, so Goldberg makes a lot of compromises for the sake of storytelling.
communities of Calabasas. The third book begins with a string of unsolved home invasion robberies. Eve and her partner go undercover as a wealthy couple, even though she lives “on the other side of the 101 freeway, in a two story street-front condo on the north end of Las Virgenes Road.” Eve struggles to resolve events from earlier books in the series such as a lawsuit and her continual rejection of fame, even after agreeing to a television series of her life.
The fourth book in the series is called Movieland and is anticipated to be released in June. Its storyline is inspired by the mysterious deadly shootings in Malibu Creek State Park. Goldberg visits the places he writes about to get a sense of reality, because he believes one observation, taste, or smell grounds a fictional scene. Even though he admits he has “never set foot beyond the opening lobby in the Lost Hills Station, I don’t
In many ways Lee Goldberg’s well developed books are a love letter to the cities of Calabasas, Topanga, Malibu, Agoura, and Hidden Hills. His storylines include many quirky characters that epitomize Hollywood and Southern California stereotypes, adding twists that make Lost Hills, Bone Canyon & Gated Prey entertaining representations of familiar battles in our areas with neighbors, celebrities, developers, crime, local government, media, and natural disasters such as wildfires. He hopes his audience embraces the good and the bad headlines within the Lost Hills Sheriff’s jurisdiction as they accept the marginalized rookie Homicide Detective Eve Ronin. Goldberg expertly weaves Ronin’s strengths as a heroic but flawed investigator, and her complicated family and work relationships into a dark crime series set in many recognizable local haunts that will both delight and disturb you.

SENDING OUT AN S.O.S.
WITH ADDICTION AND OVERDOSE NOW THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR PEOPLE UNDER 30 IN THE UNITED STATES, GENERATION S.O.S. SETS OUT TO CHANGE THE WAY WE TALK ABOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE
26 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2021-22
Written by Elle Rama | Photos courtesy of Generation S.O.S.
The increase in drug overdose deaths in Los Angeles are one of the many tragic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, there has been a 52% increase in accidental drug overdose deaths in Los Angeles County from 2019 to 2020. While this finding has been
directly linked to the pandemic, addiction and overdose are a longstanding threat to America’s youth, a problem Generation S.O.S. has been fighting for over six years. Addiction is the #1 cause of death among people under 30 in America, and the non-profit, comprised of around 12,000 supporters across the country, believes their personal stories speak louder than statistics so they
are dedicated to spreading the kind of awareness that saves lives. Considering substance misuse is an adolescent-onset illness that 90% of the time begins during their teenage years, Generation S.O.S. operates on the mantra: “It’s so much easier to build strong adolescents than repair broken adults.”
Winter 2021-22 | Hidden Hills Magazine 27
The non-profit began in New York after a group of schools was devastated by the shocking loss of 6 students in a 3 month period from drug overdoses. The schools were doing nothing in response and the parents and students were not only devastated but terrified. The conversation that began as a fearful murmur quickly became a passionate outcry for change. Not only were parents scared for their children, but the kids that had seen their peers taken so unexpectedly didn’t want the same to happen to them.
What started as a small support group of students that were mourning the loss of their friends, gradually turned into monthly meetings that
spread like wildfire despite the stigmas so many feared would hinder their efforts. Many were worried that their peers would think of them as the “drug police” and not be welcomed at parties, or believe that they had some sort of drug problem. Instead, they were surprised to find a profound truth that would be the seed of a great tree that blossomed into the Generation S.O.S. they know today: they all needlessly isolated themselves out of shame of their imperfect journeys while their peers had the same afflictions. Many were watching someone in their life battle substance abuse whether it was a sibling, parent, friend, or themselves, and by walking into these meetings, enormous

weights were lifted off their shoulderssharing their stories was their freedom.
Robin Aviv and Jim Hood, Founder and CEO of Generation S.O.S., respectively saw the impact these meetings were having in their community and knew their entire lives had led up to this vocation.
Because Robin struggled with her own addiction and Jim tragically lost his son, Austin, to a drug overdose, coming from both sides of addiction has allowed them to spearhead this movement with an astounding goal of reaching over 25,000 people by 2022. When Robin’s niece, Andie Aviv, heard about their work on the east coast, she knew she wanted to cultivate the S.O.S. environment in Hidden Hills and surrounding schools. Hosting the first chapter before the pandemic in March of 2020, Andie quickly joined the youth advisory board and searched for ways to spread awareness in the local community.
When Robin and Jim looked at the climate surrounding the opioid crisis so many years ago, it was easy to see the pain points in the systems in place to support America’s youth. Outdated drug education programs tiptoed around the truth with total failure to address opiates or provide context around the reality of addiction as a serious illness as opposed to a moral failure. The language often fed the very same shame demons that kept students in their isolated corners and even produced outcomes that increased chances of drug use.Faced with huge pressures from school and home, it was

no shock to find that alcohol and drugs were common coping mechanisms.
Robin and Jim, along with many others, questioned why there was a lack of response or action from the schools who were seeing so many of their students die, especially when they knew the cause. What they discovered was a rather discouraging cycle within the school systems, all as a result of the stigmas surrounding addiction and drug use. When a drug overdose death occurred, schools avoided tackling the problem, apprehensive of bad press or being identified as “the school with the drug problem”. However, there is a drug problem at every school that persists and kills more every year.
Generation S.O.S. is making large strides in their efforts to save as many lives as possible and is expanding quickly to different states and schools. Their website features upcoming zoom meetings and events where their supporters can come together to share and hear stories in person. Their zoom
meetings typically feature one “sober kid” that explains their journey through addiction, mental health, and recovery, ending with questions from the audience. These brave kids shamelessly tell every detail of their experience from their greatest adversity to the daily practices they upkeep to set themselves up for success. These meetings are different

from AA in that their attendees are mainly young people that have never really struggled with substance abuse, but are hyper aware of remaining on the side of prevention. So many of the members in recovery believe their path would have been profoundly different had they been a part of Generation S.O.S. as a teen.
Charlie Coleman is one of the many “sober kids” that dedicates much of his time sharing his story in hopes he can make a difference in other kids’ lives the way Generation S.O.S. did for him. Charlie grew up in New York City with a loving mother, father, and two younger brothers. He explained that while he was blessed with a stable upbringing and supportive parents, he found himself looking to his older cousins as role models. Starting at the young age of 10 years old, he was drinking with his cousins to the point of blacking out and throwing up. Soon he began snooping through their medicine cabinets and discovered Adderall, crushing and snorting the stolen pills. Next came weed, and finally his drug of choice, cocaine. He remembers the fear he felt doing such dangerous things at such a young age, but because he was never caught and nothing bad ever happened, without consequences he couldn’t find a reason to stop.
At 15 years old, his addiction to cocaine developed to the point where he chose drugs over anything. Charlie was a great athlete and student and was popular at school, but saw all of his relationships through a lens of shame. He thought “If you just knew who I really was, you would hate me as much as I hate myself”. The voice in his head that said this next line could be the one that kills me conveniently quieted the more he did.
One quiet school night, long after his voice of reason subsided, he thought he was having a heart attack when he saw on his Apple watch his heart rate was at an astounding 250bpm. With a numb left arm and panic running through his body, Charlie wrote his first suicide note. When he found himself still alive and breathing an hour later, he told his friend who encouraged him to go to the hospital. He told the nurses he had a panic attack, received a note to miss school the next day, and was back home, unharmed and with a day to himself the very next morning. He was now a college student in enormous debt from his addiction, he gained 30 lbs, only leaving his dorm room to go out at night to drink, completely isolating himself. He never knew which line would be the one that killed him, but he didn’t care whether he lived or died.
While this was his rock bottom, it would also serve as the turning point he needed so desperately. He spent the next four months sober, still feeling empty inside, until finally something clicked. After reading the award winning novel, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, Charlie realized that the meaning of his journey could serve by saving others from following the same path.
Even though he was scared of what others would think, Charlie started meetings within his fraternity to talk about substance use and found great support from his brothers. Soon after the first several meetings, a friend recommended a Zoom meeting he had heard about through an organization called Generation S.O.S. After just one meeting Charlie knew there was something different about this organization that could change the lives of many, so he asked Robin and Jim
if he could bring the program to his college campus. The first Zoom they held through his fraternity and sorority system yielded over 100 attendees and 6 students personally reaching out to Charlie for guidance through their own struggles.
With brave young adults like Charlie all over the country, Generation S.O.S. is expanding rapidly and hoping to save lives by creating an environment that promotes awareness, prevention, vulnerability, and unconditional support. If you would like to learn more about Generation S.O.S., attend a meeting, or recommend a meeting to your son, daughter, or loved one, you can visit their website www.generationsos.org to find dates of upcoming Zooms that all are welcome to attend to hear stories from sober youth and ask questions.

The Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort is a hidden gem nuzzled in between the beautiful Santa Barbara coast and Santa Ynez wine country. Three hundred years of history since the Spanish acquisition by conquistador Raimundo Carillo have been perfectly preserved in the 10,500 acres that now include a working cattle ranch, guest resort, and golf course. While the Ranch has many amenities for guests including fishing, archery, horseback riding, tennis, and a barnyard, it is surrounded by endless memorable activities as well.
Guests are greeted by neighs and roosts from the barnyard as they arrive to check-in. Countless critters from bunnies to alpacas await feeding and snuggles from guests throughout the day. Guests can even join the barnyard team for a hog wash to scrub the pigs! Stables holding over 100 horses are available for horse riding lessons in the corrals or for excursions through the 50 miles of trails and stunning meadows surrounding the main lodging area. Guests can opt to wake up bright and early to ride a horse to the Saturday morning hayride breakfast to work

up an appetite for the cookout at the historic adobe building. Whether arriving by hayride or horse, guests are seated in the picnic area next to a quiet creek for some freshly prepared crambled eggs, fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon and sausage, and fresh squeezed orange juice. For the other mornings, the Ranch Room has an extensive menu and buffet featuring seasonal fresh fruit, an assortment of freshbaked pastries, eggs, bacon, and sausages from Solvang, and more local seasonal selections.
After a hearty homemade breakfast, shuttles are available to bring guests to a 100-acre private lake. The bait shop is stocked with all the equipment and live worms you need to ensure you’ll make a catch (and release) while you’re on the water. Before hopping on a boat, make sure to allot time for the kids to catch frogs and check out the archery & air rifle ranges.
Guided fishing trips are a great way to learn about the lake’s fish habitat of mostly bluegill and largemouth bass, as well as how to tie knots, cast, choose tackle, as well as be instructed in fish identification, handling, and the proper release method. The most exciting part about being out on the lake is discovering hidden eagle nests tucked along the shoreline pines that are filled with little black tufts of screaming babies. The nests can be hard to spot, so when achieved it is a truly special experience.

one’s skills or try a fun new way to exercise on vacation without feeling like you’re back at the gym (even though there is an awesome fitness center as well!). To really get in the ranch spirit, saddle up for a guided scenic horse ride through the winding foothills of the Alisal and explore up to 50 miles worth of trails throughout the massive acreage surrounding the resort.
If you’re looking to go off-site for a day, taking advantage of the local wineries is the best choice. The Sunstone Vineyard is a destination winery known for the best red wine in Santa Barbara, as well as its gorgeous history within the walls of the family-run and built villa. Using reclaimed
materials from the remains of buildings from villages in France including Marseille and Provence, the stunning Tuscan style chateau also boasts 5,000 square foot barrel-aging caves built into the mountainside.
Hanging poolside is another great option to relax and snack on some comfort food in the sun. Surrounding the pool are the arts and crafts rooms, billiard and ping pong tables, and the TV room. Every Thursday night you can find the majority of the guests at Alisal in the TV room, which transforms into a dance floor for musical chairs and line dancing. Guests can also gather in the library on Friday nights for an exciting game of Bingo. However, during

Summertime, Friday nights are for the rodeo, where wranglers showcase their roping and barrel racing skills. Wranglers find the competition for quickest capture in roping a steer the most fun tradition resulting from the historical duties of cowboys in roping calves for branding or medical attention. The barrel racing competition is also a thrilling experience, watching the horses dart from the entrance while extremely skilled riders guide their horses through the
barrels to the finish in record times.
One of the most memorable moments of any trip to the Alisal is the evening meal. Respecting a long-standing tradition, guests are asked to dress up for dinner and men are even required to wear collared shirts and jackets! Before taking a seat in the Ranch Room, grab a drink at the full bar located in the Oak Room and catch a song or two from the acoustic cowboys. Moving into

Find the perfect ending to your perfect vacation at the Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch. Anyone can stop by to look at the adorable ponies and if you go anytime between April and May there will be many young foals running around!
The Alisal Ranch is an unforgettable destination that is perfect for a western twist on the family vacation with a perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Nightly rates range from $600-$1,500 depending on packages and season. Mid to late May or early June is the best time of year to enjoy the amazing amenities the ranch offers as well as experience some cool mornings great for sipping hot cocoa, and warm days by the pool (in addition to viewing the eagle babies out on the lake & the young foals at Quicksilver Ranch).
VIRTUALLY DELICIOUS
Online cooking experience with chef Gino Angelini
brings the restaurant to the home kitchen.
In the spirit of teaching a couple of tasty “virtual” lessons of Italian cooking, Gelson’s first virtual cooking class took place this summer with Angelini Osteria Alimentari Chef & Co-Owner Gino Angelini and Co-Owner Elizabeth Angelini. They featured the delicious dishes of Angel Hair al Limone and Meatballs in Marinara Sauce.
This was an opportunity to cook with one of Los Angeles’s renowned Italian chefs in the comfort of your own home. Gino Angelini developed his love of food as a child growing up in San Clemente, a small town in the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy famous for its rich gastronomic tradition. He spent each day cooking with his mother and grandmother, savoring their simple,
country meals, before deciding to devote his life to food at the age of 14. Gino first brought his culinary talents to Los Angeles in 1995, and in October 2001, he opened his own restaurant, Angelini Osteria, in the heart of Los Angeles. Since its opening, Angelini Osteria has become known as a favorite Italian restaurant in Los Angeles, winning over the city with its unassuming and authentic dishes which are served in a warm and intimate setting.
Gelson’s Market provided a prepaid cooking kit with various fresh ingredients with further instructions and information. The cooking kit included Certified Angus Beef® Ground Beef, Gino Angelini Limone Sauce, Gino Angelini Marinara Sauce, Breadcrumbs, NonFat Milk, Eggs, Fresh Parsley, Grated
Parmigiano Reggiano, Garlic, Angel Hair Pasta, and Lemon. The evening featured presentations from Gelson’s Grocery Manager David Vana along with an introduction from Angelini Osteria Director of Catering Jennifer Toti. The viewers successfully learned how to prepare Chef Angelini’s recipes as he live-streamed step-by-step instructions and gave tips for creating a world-class meal.
Gino’s kitchen philosophy is simple and authentic, focusing on the products and the region; and working in a kitchen that renews itself without losing sight of the true Italian tradition. He is consistently praised by patrons and critics as “the best Italian chef in Los Angeles.” Buon Appetito!

Take a trip into the world of Vincent Van Gogh with The Immersive Van Gogh Experience
Written by Britt Aaronson
Appreciate art like never before at the largest Van Gogh Exhibit in the world through February 6. From the creators of the blockbuster show in Paris seen by over 2 million visitors, the west coast premiere of the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit brings the art of Vincent to life in Los Angeles. The exhibit was conceived by Massimiliano Siccardi, with a soundtrack produced by Luca Longobardi, both of whom pioneered immersive digital art experiences in France.
From the moment visitors step inside the expansive venue at Lighthouse in Hollywood, they are transported. Visitors are immersed in Van Gogh’s works – from his sunny landscapes and night scenes to his portraits and still life paintings. The installation includes the Mangeurs de pommes de terre (The Potato Eaters, 1885), the Nuit étoilée (Starry Night, 1889), Les Tournesols (Sunflowers, 1888), and La Chambre à coucher (The Bedroom, 1889), and so much more.
Visitors lose themselves in flawless projections animating Vincent van Gogh as they wander through entrancing, moving images that highlight brushstrokes, detail, and color – truly illuminating the mind of the genius. Emmy Awardwinning and Tony Awardnominated designer David Korins, known for his set designs featured in numerous Broadway hits including ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Dear Evan Hansen’, designed unique and experiential elements to transform Lighthouse Los Angeles into a truly one-of-akind venue – crafting a sound and light event visitors will never forget.
There are many unique and unforgettable experiences visitors can enjoy at the exhibit. Located in the former Amoeba Music Building, this iconic 55,000 square foot building has been converted into an unforgettable art experience featuring a 25,000 square foot space where art comes to life around you engaging all of one's senses. Enjoy the organic landscapes of Van Gogh’s
imagination, and journey through his brilliance and madness. Astonishing in scale and breathtakingly imaginative, you will encounter Van Gogh’s art in a completely new and unforgettable way. Van Gogh wrote more than a thousand letters and they created an AI tool that invites visitors to write and receive a personalized letter in return. Visitors can take a picture in front of a 16’ X 16’ hand-carved self-portrait of Van Gogh, in addition to photographing themselves in a variety of experiential spaces.
The Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit makes the art of Vincent Van Gogh a multimedia happening accessible to those not able or uninterested in viewing art in museums, in addition to making the visitor an excited participant in many of his breathtaking masterpieces.
