With the Getty, Griffith Observatory, The Broad, Hammer Musuem, Huntington Botanical Gardens, MOCA and LACMA all within the Greater Los Angeles area, it’s time to turn your next event from ordinary to extraordinary!

Now that your destination is set, why not start the adventure in a elegant limousine or state of the art Party Bus? Small family and friend groups can share the comfort of a luxurious limousine or Mercedes Party Bus while enjoying the extra time together instead of battling the traffic of Los Angeles. publisher’s letter

As we approach the close of another year, we find ourselves reflecting on the moments that have defined us—the triumphs, the challenges, the love, and the connections. The holiday season invites us to gather with loved ones, savor delicious food, and celebrate the past while looking ahead to what the new year holds. It’s a time of reflection, renewal, and gratitude.

In this issue, as we celebrate the end of the year, our Mayor, Doug Stewart, shares the City of Malibu’s vision for the future and the promise of progress in the year ahead. Looking toward 2025, we are reminded of the strength and resilience of our community. The challenges we face only bring us closer together, and there is so much to be hopeful for as we step into the new year.

This October marked the one-year anniversary of a tragic loss that deeply affected Malibu—the deaths of four Pepperdine University students—Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams—on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Their memory continues to drive efforts to make PCH a safer road, and a communitywide initiative has emerged to improve safety measures along one of the area’s most hazardous stretches. As we approach the holiday season, let us keep their families in our hearts and honor their legacy by supporting actions that will help prevent further tragedy.

As this is our Food & Wine edition, we are excited to immerse ourselves in the vibrant flavors of the season. From the cozy warmth of seasonal drinks at Caffe Luxxe to the festive offerings at Ollo Malibu, we invite you to experience the essence of the holidays. Malibu’s culinary scene is as diverse and inviting as the people who call this place home, and there’s no better time to indulge in the wonderful flavors that define our coastal lifestyle.

And, of course, we explore Malibu’s wine scene, a perfect reflection of the area’s coastal charm and relaxed elegance. From Summer Somewhere Wines, offering an extensive selection of reds, whites, rosé, and even a trendy orange wine, to iconic

wineries like NABU Wines, Hoyt Family Vineyards, and Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio, there’s a wine for every palate. Whether you are enjoying panoramic views at Cielo Farms or savoring a glass of wine while listening to live music at your favorite vineyard, Malibu’s wineries create an unforgettable experience. And we can’t forget the exceptional offerings at Mizel Wines, which add to the region’s rich wine culture.

Also, in this issue, we have the pleasure of sharing a story from Sierra Blanca Estates, a company known for its luxury real estate and innovative designs. Founded over 35 years ago by visionary Pedro Rodriguez, Sierra Blanca has played a significant role in transforming Marbella into a global destination for luxury living. Today, under the leadership of Carlos and Luis Rodriguez, the company continues to blend tradition with cutting-edge design, creating works of art that are as livable as they are beautiful. We also highlight the invaluable contributions of local real estate experts, Nick Söderblom and Chris Cortazzo, whose deep understanding of American real estate needs ensures that each client finds their perfect home.

Each issue, we strive to bring you the stories that make Malibu the exceptional place we all love. From the creatives and visionaries to the inspirational figures that define our community, we are constantly inspired by the talent and beauty that surround us. As we look to 2025, we are excited to continue bringing you the stories that showcase the heart and soul of Malibu. From all of us here at Malibu Magazine, we wish you a very happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

Here’s to health, wealth, and happiness for all!

Community Carnival Honors Emily Shane’s Legacy

In October, Malibu’s Pepperdine University hosted a free community carnival in honor of Emily Shane, a young life tragically lost in a car accident on Pacific Coast Highway in 2010. Organized by Emily’s parents, Ellen and Michel Shane, the event celebrated her life while raising awareness about the dangers of speeding, distracted driving, and street racing. The carnival offered information booths from organizations dedicated to promoting road safety and supporting at-risk middle school students, like the Shane-founded Emily Shane Foundation, which helps struggling students with mentorship and tutoring.

The event also featured personal stories from those who, like the Shanes, lost loved ones to traffic accidents. Highlights included California Highway Patrol’s message about reckless driving consequences and community organizations like A to Z Families for Safe Streets and Street Racing Kills. These groups work to prevent unsafe driving and honor those lost to traffic violence, such as Zachary Cruz and Valentina Trujillo Puckett.

Ellen and Michel Shane continue to push for road safety, with Michel’s documentary “21 Miles in Malibu” and Ellen’s Successful Educational Achievement (SEA) program helping disadvantaged students. The event was a touching tribute to Emily, who would have loved the joyous occasion, as families enjoyed carnival games, a petting zoo, and the release of butterflies, symbolizing hope. The Shane family’s commitment to safety and education resonated deeply in the Malibu community, uniting all in the shared goal of a safer, more compassionate world.

33rd Annual Pie Festival Celebrates Community

The 33rd annual Pie Festival at Malibu Methodist Church was a highly anticipated community event that lived up to its reputation as a beloved tradition. Despite power outages affecting much of Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains due to high winds, attendees showed up in full force, eagerly discussing their favorite pie flavors. Talented musicians like Big Harmonica Bob and his blues band, U.S. 99, provided a lively soundtrack, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Families, volunteers, and dogs mingled as children enjoyed crafts, face painting, and pie sampling. Among the attendees were longtime locals like Aelina Longo and Candace Bowen, who have attended the festival for decades. This year, McConnell’s Ice Cream added a sweet touch, serving ice cream to pair with the pies. Volunteers and local businesses, such as Shemesh Farms, contributed to the event’s success, offering everything from massages to unique products like lavender sachets.

As the pie judging took place, first-time entrants like 9-year-old Tola DeMir nervously awaited the results, while veterans like Lynda Pingatore, a frequent winner, were more confident. The event also celebrated the creative contributions of local artists, including Tiana Fazio’s chalk art installation. When the winners were announced, the joy of the event was palpable, with comments about how the festival fosters a spirit of community. Pastor Erin Stenberg’s closing words reminded attendees of the importance of sharing moments of sweetness and love, a sentiment echoed by Rabbi Marcelo Gindlin. The festival was a heartfelt celebration of community spirit, with plenty of pies, smiles, and laughter to go around.

Malibu Honors Veterans at 25th Ceremony

Malibu’s 25th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11 was a powerful and moving tribute, held at City Hall and attended by a packed audience. Hosted by the Malibu Navy League, Pepperdine University, the City of Malibu, and the Malibu Association of Realtors, the event celebrated “A Quarter Century of Honor” with performances, speeches, and recognitions.

The ceremony included traditional military formalities, music by local talents like Destiny Malibu and Kathy Bee, and a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace” by Gina Longo and her son. Honorees included 97-year-old World War II veteran Tom Lubisich, who shared his experiences, emphasizing that “war is not the answer.” Veterans like Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Bill Ratner and local hero Jefferson Wagner also spoke, sharing their stories of service and the importance of honoring veterans every day.

The event featured poetry, with young participants like Edward Gorby and Malibu Poet Laureate Nathan Hassall offering heartfelt tributes. Ethel Margolin, a 102-year-old World War II veteran, was recognized for her lifelong dedication to supporting veterans.Keynote speaker Pat Boone, a veteran advocate, moved the audience with his reflections on patriotism, honoring veterans, and his new song “Where Did America Go?” emphasizing the need for unity and respect for those who serve. The ceremony concluded with calls for a renewed sense of patriotism and support for veterans, leaving the crowd inspired and grateful for their service.

Feminine Perspectives Redefine Traditional Still Life

The “Feminine Perspectives: A Still Life Exhibit” at the City Hall Art Gallery in Malibu, which opened on Novemeber 17, offers a fresh take on the traditional still life genre, often associated with dark Flemish paintings depicting inanimate objects like flowers and dead animals. The exhibit, which features works by female artists, explores the delicate balance between the mundane and profound. Curators Fireball Tim Lawrence and Julia Holland decided to focus on women’s unique perspectives as the submissions came in predominantly from female artists.

The exhibit showcases diverse interpretations of still life by artists like Martha Meade, who views the genre as a way to focus closely on a single object to convey its essence. Mia Babalis combines her background in dance with visual storytelling, while Cathey Cadieux brings a sense of movement to her floral still lifes, capturing the fleeting beauty of flowers in bloom. Other artists, such as Debbi Green and Roxanne Skene, explore different mediums and themes, from hand-painted furniture to mural art. Leslie Lienau’s pastel works and her classical teaching methods also add joy to the exhibit.

The pieces provoke reflection, such as Cadieux’s commentary on the transient nature of life, or Skene’s “Rock Paper Scissors,” which reimagines the game with elements of nature influencing the outcome. The reception, filled with conversation, art, and music, highlighted the creative process and the joy of completing a piece from concept to realization. The exhibit offers a vibrant and introspective take on still life, embracing both tradition and innovation.

Loving Malibu

we asked Malibuites...

“What is your favorite activity in Malibu during the winter?”

Photographed and curated by

Aaron Westine

I love drumming in Malibu in the wintertime because it gets me in a peaceful mindset and the movement of drumming is healing. I’ve been focusing on working on music with the local Malibu bands Little Dume and 27Miles. Drumming on the Malibu beach is very grounding and therapeutic. Also have really enjoyed drumming for Malibu Fitness dance classes and for breathwork classes with Chris Tai at Veritas Yoga. Grateful to be in Malibu.”

Mary Kunze

In the winter months here in Malibu, I love using my time to get into the flow of silversmithing to make handcrafted jewelry in my studio. The days may be darker and cooler, but I find that by adding some candles and fresh flowers to my studio, my time is filled with tapping into my creative side to create jewelry that is backed by life’s lessons + connections. I love bundling up and going on a moody beach walk, catching the sunrise, and getting coffee at a few of our local shops. My planning, sketching, and behind-

the-scenes business work is usually done while at the coffee shop, where I will often times run into so many lovely friends + community. Between the nature and the people here, I am constantly feeling inspired and motivated in my art. I have been a vendor at the Malibu Farmers Market as well, where I have connected with so many through my made-in-malibu jewelry collections. This special beach town and peace of nature bring so much joy to my life. I am so grateful to live among beautiful Malibu.”

Jesse Billauer

I love taking my boys Dorian and Nakoa to the beach to boogie board on winter days. We have such great weather in Malibu this time of year. They love the ocean like I do. It makes me happy to share the waves with them. Spending time at the beach is such a gift, especially during the winter months. It’s less crowded

and sometimes all the elements come together for a perfect day to watch my kids play in the same waters I did as a kid growing up. It brings back so many memories, and the fact that I get to create new memories with them is priceless. Malibu has a very special place in my heart.”

Diana Nicholson

There is something magical about hiking in nature during wintertime… it’s alchemy! It transforms and calms my mind and turns my anxiety into a sense of freedom and connection with the world around me. There’s something deeply rejuvenating about being surrounded by trees, mountains, and sweeping views of the California coastline. Every step feels like a journey away from routine and brings me closer to a pure, more grounded version of myself.”

Steve and Jen Arce

We love to walk the beaches on crisp, winter mornings with our dogs. We also enjoy going down to the beach in the in the evening to catch the sunset with our dogs Champ and Willow. We have adopted and placed 14 dogs over the years. It brings us pleasure to rescue pups in need.”

Reflecting on Loss and Tragedy

Loss of Our Four Pepperdine Students One Year Later

On October 17, 2023, Malibu was forever changed by the tragic deaths of four Pepperdine University students— Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams—who lost their lives in a collision on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). This heartbreaking incident sparked a widespread effort by the community and local agencies to improve safety along PCH, a notorious stretch of road known for its high-speed traffic and frequent accidents.

On the anniversary of the accident, friends and family gathered at the Ghost Tire Memorial on Webb Way for a candlelight vigil to honor the victims. This somber event provided an opportunity for reflection and remembrance. Attendees shared grief, left flowers at the memorial, and supported each other through the painful loss. Among those present was Pepperdine senior Hannah Allen, who remembered her best friend, Deslyn Williams. Allen had been with Williams on the day of her passing, and she expressed her gratitude for the time they shared. “She taught me... to be present and to live life to the fullest,” Allen said. She added that while the pain of loss remained, the community had grown stronger and more united in the face of tragedy.

Malibu’s Mayor Doug Stewart, along with other council members, attended the vigil and reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy.

“It’s a sad day because we lost four beautiful women, but at the same

time, so much has been changed because of them,” Stewart remarked, emphasizing the city’s commitment to making PCH safer in their memory. Pepperdine University President Jim Gash also spoke at the vigil, expressing the deep sorrow felt by the campus community while offering words of comfort. “We miss them very much, but we are walking together in this journey by the God who loves us and tells us that this is not the end,” Gash said.

The following day, the City of Malibu held a press conference to highlight the safety initiatives and infrastructure improvements that had been implemented over the past year. Local and state officials, including Senator Ben Allen, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Capt. Jennifer Seetoo, and David Rolston—the father of Niamh Rolston—spoke about the progress made in response to the tragedy.

One significant development was the passage of SB 1297, a new law allowing for the installation of speed cameras at critical locations on PCH in Malibu. The goal of this measure is to reduce speeding, a major factor in accidents along the highway. Additionally, a Malibu CHP Task Force was created, working in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), which led to a 36% reduction in injury collisions on PCH.

Other improvements included $4.1 million in short-term infrastructure changes, funded by a Director’s Order from Caltrans. These efforts aimed to address immediate safety concerns, while a Strategic Master Plan is being developed to transform PCH into a safer, more community-friendly corridor. This long-term plan would enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

David Rolston, speaking on behalf of his daughter Niamh, expressed the profound sense of loss felt by families and the wider community. “When I see these tires, I see this interconnectedness, and community, sorrow and the loss that extends throughout the City of Malibu, Pepperdine University and across the country, and across the entire world,” he said. He acknowledged that the tragedy had irrevocably changed everyone involved. “We are no longer the people we were on October 17, 2023. The people we were on that day, those people died with our child. We are different people now,” Rolston said.

In addition to legislative and infrastructural changes, the local community took steps to ensure the victims’ legacies would be remembered. Streets Are For Everyone, along with the Emily Shane Foundation and the FixPCH team, collaborated with California State

Parks to create a memorial program honoring the four students. The memorial will consist of four wooden benches or picnic tables at Point Dume, each dedicated to one of the girls. The site, offering breathtaking views of the bluffs, beaches, and ocean, will serve as a peaceful space for reflection. Each table or bench will feature a plaque with a QR code linking to a digital memorial and a reminder to drive safely along PCH.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to fund the installation of these memorials, with a goal of $32,000 to cover the cost of the tables, plaques, and maintenance for the next 25 years. Funds raised beyond the memorial’s cost will be donated to the Emily Shane Foundation and Streets Are For Everyone, two organizations that have played a key role in advocating for safer conditions on PCH.

The tragic deaths of Niamh, Peyton, Asha, and Deslyn have left a lasting impact on the Malibu community. Yet, in their memory, significant steps have been taken to improve the safety of PCH, ensuring that their legacy contributes to the well-being of future generations. Their loved ones and the broader community have rallied together, demonstrating resilience, compassion, and a commitment to preventing further loss on this dangerous stretch of highway.

The City of Malibu Progress and Promise

What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question we often ask children, yet for a city like Malibu—now 33 years old—there’s no simple answer. Malibu will never “grow up” in the traditional sense because each day brings new challenges and opportunities. Our focus is on evolving while preserving the essence of what makes Malibu special.

To understand where we are headed, we must reflect on 2024, a year of progress and determination. While we take pride in our achievements, there’s always more to strive to accomplish.

2024: A Year of Progress

Safety on Pacific Coast Highway

The safety of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) has long been a priority, but in 2024, it became more urgent than ever. After the tragic deaths of four Pepperdine students in late 2023, the city mobilized quickly,

working with CalTrans, CHP, the Sheriff’s Department, and state and county officials. The response was swift and effective. Injury accidents have significantly decreased, and anecdotal evidence shows slower traffic speeds compared to the prior year.

CalTrans’ $4.1@ million emergency commitment enabled crucial structural improvements and the return of the CHP to local enforcement strengthened our efforts. These actions are already saving lives, and their impact will carry forward into 2025.

Another milestone in 2024 is the near completion of our traffic synchronization project, which is set to deliver measurable safety and efficiency benefits for motorists and pedestrians in 2025. Additionally, the decision to contract routine parking enforcement has yielded visible improvements in overnight parking compliance and public safety.

Advancing School Separation

Malibu’s long-standing goal of establishing an independent school district made meaningful strides in 2024. While efforts to finalize joint agreements with the Santa Moncia-Malibu School District fell short, we have submitted a unilateral petition to the Los Angeles County Office of Education. We are hopeful to have a decision by early 2025, which would bring us closer to state-level consideration. This progress, while incremental, represents a critical step in ensuring Malibu has a school system tailored to our community’s needs.

Improving City Operations

Another focus of 2024 has been strengthening city operations, particularly within our Planning and Building Safety Departments. The implementation of the recommendations from the Baker Tilly consulting report has begun to yield results, improving both internal processes and public experiences. Efforts to recruit and retain staff –especially permanent employees in key positions – laid the groundwork for sustainable improvements.

For 2025, our ambitions for Malibu are optimistic.

Expanding Safety Measurers on

PCH:

In 2025, Malibu will build on the momentum of 2024 with even

more ambitious safety measures. By the end of the year, we will be the first city in California to implement speed cameras. The completion of the traffic signal synchronization system will allow for real-time traffic data and improved flow while acting as a force multiplier for law enforcement. Plans for temporary traffic roundabouts on PCH in western Malibu will further enhance safety and compliance. Many of these improvements align with the recommendations in the 2015 PCH Safety Study.

Addressing PSPS Risks

SCE Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) continue to pose challenges for Malibu, particularly regarding the ripple effects on cell service, internet reliability, and traffic signals. In 2025, the City will focus on mitigating these risks while improving emergency alert systems to ensure timely communication with our residents during outages.

Moving School Separation Forward

With an anticipated approval of our school separation plans at the LA County level, 2025 will shift our focus to Sacramento to advocate for the state level consideration. As stated early progress in 2025 will be key as we continue working toward the long-term goal of achieving local control.

Enhancing City Operations and Staff Development

Building off of 2024, the implementation of the Baker Tilley recommendations will remain a focal point of 2025. Investments in new software will streamline operations, allowing for smoother permit processing and a more modern, digital approach to city permitting. Recruitment and training of permanent staff will further stabilize and strengthen operations. Resolving open senior leadership positions early in the year will be essential to these efforts.

Parks and Recreation Development

Malibu’s parks will continue to evolve in 2025, with exciting developments on the horizon. The long-awaited permanent skate park is expected to open, providing a dedicated space for local skaters. Phase one of the project to convert vacant property into youth sports fields will begin, laying the foundation for future recreational opportunities. Looking ahead, plans are in motion to create a multi-generational community center and sports complex, with amenities such as a pool, library, senior center, and sports courts.

In addition to these projects, the City will maintain its commitment to protecting natural areas and managing visitor impacts. Efforts to improve visitor safety, and safeguard the environment remain a priority, ensuring that these spaces can be enjoyed by all.

Looking Ahead

Malibu in 2025 is a city dedicated to its Mission Statement while it continues to advance safety conditions on PCH, advocate for local control in our schools, and improve city operations. While challenges will persist, so too will our determination to overcome them to make Malibu even better in 2025.

Unearthing the Legacy of Thrace

A Journey Through Ancient Treasures at the Getty Villa

The Getty Villa Museum has unveiled a landmark exhibition, Ancient Thrace and the Classical World: Treasures from Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the art, history, and mystery of Thrace. Open now through March 3, 2025, the exhibition showcases over 200 remarkable artifacts, including intricate gold, silver, and bronze metalwork, pottery, inscriptions, and stone reliefs, offering a rare glimpse into the ancient culture that thrived north of the Aegean Sea.

“This exceptional exhibition is the first to focus on the interconnections and rivalries between the Thracians and their neighbors, especially Greece and Rome,” explains Timothy Potts, director of the Getty Museum. “For many of our visitors, this will be their first introduction to this fascinating and highly sophisticated ancient culture, which was both feared for its military prowess and celebrated for its artistic achievements.”

“the exhibition showcases over 200 remarkable artifacts, including intricate gold, silver, and bronze metalwork, pottery, inscriptions, and stone reliefs, “

A Land of Riches and Mystery

Thrace, the crossroads of ancient civilizations, occupies what is now Bulgaria and parts of Romania, Greece, and Turkey. While written records about the Thracians are scarce and often shaped by the biases of Greek and Roman authors, archaeological discoveries have illuminated their remarkable story. Beginning in the early 20th century, excavations revealed Thrace’s wealth of natural resources and its extraordinary craftsmanship, placing the region at the heart of cultural and political exchanges between East and West.

“The Thracians were known for their horsemanship, warrior skills, and artistic ingenuity,” says Sara E. Cole, associate curator of antiquities at the Getty Villa Museum and co-curator of the exhibition. “This exhibition allows us to present their culture through their own lens, challenging ancient stereotypes and providing a deeper understanding of their role in the ancient world.”

Artifacts from Thracian tombs, including treasures from Valchitran, Panagyurishte, and Rogozen in Bulgaria, demonstrate the region’s extraordinary metalworking traditions. Ornate gold and silver vessels, once used in ceremonial feasts or as grave offerings, highlight the fusion of local innovation with influences from Mycenaean Greece, Persia, and Rome.

A Tapestry of Interactions

Thrace’s strategic location made it a magnet for ancient empires. The Greeks sought its rich deposits of gold, silver, and copper, establishing trading posts and cities in the region. The Persian Empire’s expansion into Thrace in the 6th century BCE left a lasting mark, as did Rome’s eventual conquest in the 1st century CE. Yet, the Thracians maintained their distinct traditions even as they adopted elements from these powerful neighbors.

One of the exhibition’s highlights the grave goods from the tomb of King Seuthes III, unearthed in 2004 at Golyama Kosmatka in central Bulgaria. Among these treasures is a lifelike bronze portrait of Seuthes, ruler of the Odrysian kingdom from approximately 330 to 300 BCE.

“This sculpture is one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 21st century,” explained Cole. “It offers a rare, tangible connection to a historical Thracian figure, showcasing the exceptional artistry and realism of the time.”

The exhibit also features an array of funerary monuments, pottery, and luxury objects that reflect Thrace’s cultural dialogue with its neighbors. For instance, banqueting vessels inspired by Persian styles and Greek amphorae tell a story of exchange and adaptation. Thracians even served as mercenaries for the Achaemenid Persian kings, underscoring their reputation as formidable warriors.

Shaping a Narrative

Curated by a distinguished team—including Cole, Jens Daehner, acting senior curator of antiquities at the Getty Museum, and Margarit Damyanov, associate professor of Thracian archaeology—the exhibition aims to reframe Thrace’s place in history. “Our goal is to highlight Thrace’s unique contributions to the ancient world, beyond the inherently biase accounts of Greek and Roman authors,” Cole shared.

To further this mission, the exhibition is accompanied by a scholarly catalog edited by Jeffrey Spier, Timothy Potts, Sara E. Cole, and Margarit Damyanov. The publication delves into themes such as Thracian religion, royal tombs, and interactions with the Greek and Roman worlds.

A Legacy of Collaboration

The exhibition is the result of an international partnership between the Getty Museum, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria, and the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Additional loans from the National History Museum of Romania and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture enrich the narrative. This exhibit marks the third installment of the Getty Museum’s Classical World in Context series, following successful exhibitions on ancient Persia and Egypt. “Each installment of this series broadens our understanding of the interconnectedness of ancient cultures,” notes Potts. “Thrace’s story is an essential chapter in this larger narrative.”

A Timeless Invitation

As visitors wander through the galleries, they will encounter artifacts that echo the vibrancy of Thracian life and the complexity of its interactions with the ancient Mediterranean world. Whether it’s the opulent gold vessels from the Panagyurishte Treasure or the hauntingly lifelike portrait of King Seuthes, the exhibition offers an intimate look at a culture that was as dynamic as it was enigmatic.

“The world of ancient Thrace deserves far greater attention,” Cole explained. “Through this exhibition, we hope to ignite curiosity and appreciation for a culture that was central to the history and artistry of the ancient world.”

With its blend of stunning artifacts and compelling storytelling, Ancient Thrace and the Classical World is a testament to the power of art and archaeology to bridge the millennia and bring the past vividly to life. The Getty Villa invites visitors to step into this forgotten world and uncover the treasures of Thrace—a land where artistry and history converge in gold, silver, and bronze.

David Casselman:

A Lifetime Dedicated to Animals and Advocacy

Malibu’s scenic coastlines are known for attracting philanthropists and visionaries, but few embody the dedication and compassion of David Casselman. A retired trial lawyer turned mediator, arbitrator, and unwavering animal advocate, Casselman has spent decades championing causes close to his heart. From founding Ecoflix, the world’s first nonprofit streaming service dedicated to saving animals and the planet, to leading conservation projects across the globe, his work reflects a singular mission: to make a tangible difference.

A Legacy of Advocacy

Casselman’s journey began long before Ecoflix was conceived. As a lawyer, he devoted countless hours to pro bono legal work for animal welfare, including a seven-year legal battle to free Billy, a bull elephant suffering in captivity at the Los Angeles Zoo. Though his efforts didn’t achieve the desired outcome, Casselman reflects on the case as a pivotal moment.

“It was heartbreaking,” he recalls, “Particularly because we were very successful in the trial and lower Appellate Courts, but lost in the California Supreme Court.  During almost the same time period, a global group of us were able to convince the Pakistan Supreme Court to free Kaavan, an

Asian bull of almost the same age as Billy, who had suffered almost the same amount of time, in the Islamabad Zoo.

So, the Pakistan Supreme Court freed Kaavan, but the California Supreme Court refused to free Billy.  It was heartbreaking.

To this day, Kaavan lives a life of leisure in his own lush jungle, sanctuary at the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary, while poor Billy remains behind bars.  I have offered to transport him and pay for his lifetime care in Cambodia, without even so much as a response.”

Billy’s plight fueled Casselman’s resolve to create broader change, a passion he brought to partnerships with organizations like Born Free USA, Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary, and Thailand’s Elephant Nature Park. “These collaborations aren’t just partnerships; they’re lifelines,” he says.

The Birth of Ecoflix

In 2020, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Casselman retired from law and shifted his focus to filmmaking and media. His prior involvement in producing Love and Bananas, a documentary exposing the elephant trekking industry, inspired him to harness the power of storytelling.

“Films have the ability to educate and inspire action,” he explains. “Ecoflix is the first nonprofit streaming and media company dedicated to saving animals and the planet. Our work is all about making a difference, not talking about it.”

With over 1,600 hours of commercial-free programming, Ecoflix is available worldwide on platforms like Apple TV and Roku. Subscribers can direct 100 percent of their fees to a nonprofit partner of their choice, making it a mission-driven initiative. From elephants to civets, horses, wolves, whales, monkeys, and more, all productions are sustainably made, and many have garnered international acclaim, appearing on local networks, major airlines and online, reaching global audiences.

“We aim to educate and inspire without leaving viewers feeling hopeless,” says Casselman. “Our focus is on positive stories that remind people of nature’s beauty and resilience.”

Global Impact

Ecoflix’s reach extends far beyond its streaming channel. The foundation also spearheads critical conservation projects, from preventing ship strikes on whales to protecting wild elephants from poaching and captivity in Southeast Asia. In Botswana, Ecoflix has secured 7,400 acres of land, working with a team of local likeminded people to safeguard the land and its extraordinary biodiversity from poaching and human encroachment.  They are even working to stop farmers from burning the remains of their crops after harvest.

“The plumes of smoke they cause globally are a significant contributor human induced carbon polluting our world.  Bottom line, all of our efforts to directly change our relationship with the planet are intended to be more than an effort to just document the problems; we’re doing all we can to actively address them,” Casselman emphasizes. “Most of the time, we don’t choose the problems, they choose us.  By that, I mean, in most cases, no one else has figured out what to do.

So that is where we focus.”One of his proudest achievements is his longstanding partnership with Lek Chailert, founder of Elephant Nature Park, where rescued elephants live freely. “Lek is a force of nature,” he says. “Working alongside her to protect these incredible creatures has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Overcoming Challenges

Despite Ecoflix’s successes, Casselman acknowledges the immense challenges wildlife face today. “Thoughtless human actions—deforestation, pollution, climate change— have pushed our planet to the brink,” he explains. “But education and awareness can

When asked about the greatest threat to wildlife, Casselman points to humanity’s careless actions. “We’ve decimated wild spaces, polluted water sources, and clear-cut forests—the very lungs of our planet. Thoughtless human activity is undeniably the biggest threat. Those who say we can’t make a difference overlook the fact that our existence is what has put all life as we know it at risk. Unfortunately, most of the differences we have made so far have been harmful.”

But Casselman believes the better question is where our greatest hope lies. “I think education and awareness hold the key. Once people know better, they can do better. Ecoflix aims to educate and inspire, one show, one animal, one day at a time.”

Casselman’s legal background has also shaped his pragmatic approach to advocacy. “Working with Will Travers of Born Free showed me how expert testimony and public awareness can drive meaningful policy change,” he says. “It’s about combining knowledge with action to make

Inspiring Future Advocates

For those eager to make a difference, Casselman offers simple yet powerful advice: start small. “Saving one animal can ignite a lifetime of advocacy,” he shares. “The joy that comes from helping others—whether humans or animals—is truly incomparable.”

When asked how individuals can make a meaningful impact in conservation, Casselman emphasizes the power of action. “Animal advocacy and positive change go hand in hand. We can turn things around, but it requires more than talk—it’s time to act. The Ecoflix Channel showcases the incredible work of over 65 nonprofit partners, like Born Free, to inspire viewers and prove what’s possible. By seeing the beauty and power we can bring to critical issues, people realize that they too can be the change they want to see.”

He hopes to spark a new wave of conservationists by showing how fulfilling it is to make a difference.

“Helping even one animal in need brings a unique kind of joy, and that feeling is addictive. Once people experience it, they want to do more. Our goal is to encourage everyone to dive in and discover the joy and purpose that come from saving lives.”

A Legacy of Compassion

David Casselman’s journey is a testament to the belief that every life matters—whether it’s an elephant in Thailand, a wolf in Los Angeles, or a whale in the open ocean. From his decades-long career as a trial lawyer to his work as a philanthropist and founder of Ecoflix, Casselman has devoted himself to protecting animals and the environment, guided by an unwavering determination to make a tangible difference.

When reflecting on milestones achieved through Ecoflix’s collaboration with over 65 partner organizations worldwide such as Wildile SOS, Casselman highlights the profound impact of even the smallest victories. “Every life matters,” he says. “For better or worse, humans have altered the destiny of our planet and every living being on it. I’m most proud of the moments when we’ve

made a real difference for an animal—sometimes just one. That’s where it starts, and then you keep going. Whether it’s rescuing large numbers of animals in Cambodia and Thailand or planning more efforts in Botswana, every creature deserves the chance to live a full life in peace.”

Looking ahead, Casselman envisions Ecoflix becoming a sustainable force for change. “We’ve accomplished incredible things, but there’s so much more to do,” he shares. “To secure Ecoflix’s future, we need brand sponsors to take the financial load off of me, or for that matter, anyone else who might want to help.  We need to find solid ground, financially, and then work even harder to make a long-term difference.  We have to find a way to help drive change in the present and grow our support into the future. Nature needs us!” To learn more about Ecoflix and its mission, visit ecoflix.com.

Malibu SuShi

Culinary FuSion with Bold FlavorS and innovation

Malibu Sushi, launched in 2023 by celebrated restaurateur Howdy Kabrins, is the latest chapter in a remarkable culinary journey spanning over four decades. Known for redefining Mexican cuisine with fresh and bold flavors, Howdy’s innovative approach to food began in 1979 with La Salsa in Los Angeles. What started as a modest eatery at Pico and Sepulveda grew into a cultural phenomenon, inspiring future staples like Baja Fresh, Chipotle, and Rubio’s.

After selling La Salsa in 1992, Howdy brought his vision to Malibu, opening Howdy’s Taqueria in 1995. This vibrant, community-centered taqueria became a local institution beloved by residents, Pepperdine students, and visitors. For nearly two decades, it was the heart of Malibu, offering innovative dishes made with fresh ingredients in a welcoming atmosphere. Though the taqueria closed in 2014, as any Malibu resident will tell you, the spirit of Howdy never truly left.

Nearly six years later, and more than four decades since his culinary journey began, Howdy returned to Malibu with a fresh vision: Sonrisa Cafe. The name, meaning “smile” in Spanish, holds deep personal meaning for Howdy, reflecting the joy his daughter, Gaby, brought to his life. It symbolizes warmth, love, and the promise of a new beginning—values Howdy hopes to share with the Malibu community. The name “Sonrisa” also evokes the imagery of a “sunrise,” perfectly capturing Howdy’s vision of a bright, inviting place to bring people together over delicious food.

Fast forward to today, Howdy has introduced Malibu Sushi, where his passion for bold, wholesome ingredients blends the artistry of Japanese sushi with Latin-inspired flavors. What truly sets Malibu Sushi apart is its team of skilled sushi chefs from Latin America, each bringing their unique heritage and culinary expertise to craft vibrant, one-of-a-kind dishes. These fusion rolls are more than just meals—they’re immersive experiences, bursting with flavors that surprise and delight.

Already becoming a landmark in Malibu’s vibrant dining scene,

Malibu Sushi welcomes both longtime fans and newcomers eager to experience Howdy’s latest culinary creation. The menu offers a fusion adventure with standout dishes like the famous Crispy Rice Cake, topped with spicy tuna or salmon and creamy avocado, and the locally beloved Chirashi Bowl, with sashimi, seaweed salad, avocado, and rice. Sushi lovers will also enjoy the Malibu Roll, Seared Topanga Roll, and the tropical-inspired Paradise Roll. These dishes showcase Howdy’s unwavering commitment to quality, creativity, and uniting people through exceptional food.

Discover Malibu’s Finest Wines

A Tasting Journey Through Coastal Vineyards

Malibu’s wine scene reflects the coastal charm and relaxed elegance of the area, offering a range of exceptional vineyards and tasting experiences. From Summer Somewhere Wines, which captures the essence of beachside living with its diverse collection, including reds, whites, rosé, and a trendy orange wine, to iconic locations like NABU Wines, Hoyt Family Vineyards, and Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio, the region is home to wineries that highlight the unique terroir of Malibu and surrounding areas. Whether you’re sipping wine on a sunlit patio of Cielo Farms, exploring wine tasting flights, or enjoying live music, Malibu’s wineries provide the perfect setting for those looking to indulge in both fine wine and the scenic beauty of this coastal haven.

Summer Somewhere Wines

Summer Somewhere Wines, created by Malibu locals Billy and Stacey Dim, captures the essence of coastal living in every bottle. With tasting flights cleverly named after local beaches, this wine collection pays tribute to its Malibu roots. The grapes are sourced from renowned AVAs in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley, including the acclaimed Happy Canyon. Their offerings include reds, whites, rosé, and an exciting new orange wine. This trendy style, rooted in Eastern European winemaking traditions, is made by fermenting white grapes with their skins, resulting in a vibrant and distinctive orange hue.

You can enjoy their wines at The Tasting Room in Malibu Village, open Wednesday through Sunday. The inviting space offers specialty tastings, glasses or bottles of wine, and light bites, making it an ideal destination for a laid-back afternoon or pre-dinner outing. The adjacent patio is a highlight, featuring bistro tables, poppy blue-and-white striped umbrellas, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for soaking up the Malibu sun. Summer Somewhere Wines effortlessly combines fine wine, stylish surroundings, and the laid-back Malibu vibe. Whether you’re exploring the nuances of their expertly crafted wines or simply savoring a moment of sunshine, this spot is a mustvisit for wine lovers and beachgoers alike. Learn more at summersomewherewines.com.

NABU Wines

Greg Barnett, alongside his wife Janet and business partner Jeff Bailey, established NABU Wines in 2012, with its doors opening to the public in 2016. Inspired by their connection to Napa Valley and the Malibu Coast AVAs, NABU crafts exceptional wines using sustainably grown grapes. Their portfolio features both single-varietal and special blends that highlight the unique characteristics of these regions. NABU stands out as the only winery producing wines from Malibu’s diverse vineyards, ranging from the oceanside lowlands near Zuma to the mountainous terrains of Topanga Canyon. Guests at NABU’s winery experience the rich volcanic terroir of the Malibu Coast AVA, which imparts smoky nuances to red wines and striking mineral notes to whites. This AVA, officially recognized in 2014, is rooted in a winemaking tradition dating back to 1824, when José Bartolomé Tapia planted the first vines at Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit.

Beyond its acclaimed wines, NABU embraces its founders’ rock-and-roll roots. Greg and Janet’s history in the 1980s music scene, amid the glam and grit of the Sunset Strip, is reflected in the winery’s vibrant atmosphere. Visitors enjoy live music every weekend and can explore NABU’s extensive vinyl collection spinning classic tracks in the tasting room. NABU Wines blends Malibu’s rich winemaking heritage with the energy of rock culture, creating an unparalleled experience for wine and music enthusiasts alike. Visit nabuwines.com to learn more.

Hoyt FamilyVineyards

Carol Hoyt, alongside her husband Stephen, founded Hoyt Family Vineyards in 2001 after relocating from Hollywood to Malibu. Drawn to the idyllic blend of coastal beauty and agricultural opportunity, the couple established their first vineyard on a property near the beach. The cool ocean breeze provided the perfect environment for cultivating Chardonnay grapes, and Carol’s winemaking journey began with her first batch crafted in her kitchen, with her young daughter by her side.

Hoyt Family Vineyards has since expanded its reach, producing 800-1,200 cases of award-winning wines annually. Their estate vineyards span from the Malibu Coast to Paso Robles, including a stunning site in the Willow Creek AVA, known for its high elevation and premium grape quality. Each wine reflects the Hoyt family’s dedication to excellence and their passion for winemaking.

In 2018, the Woolsey Fire devastated the Hoyts’ Malibu home, but the family’s resilience prevailed. While the vineyard suffered damage, their commitment to their craft remained unwavering. Choosing not to replant the vineyard, the Hoyts sold the property and temporarily relocated to Tarzana before returning to Malibu in 2020, settling into a new home.

Today, as bi-county residents, the Hoyts cherish the supportive communities of Malibu and Paso Robles. Hoyt Family Vineyards continues to thrive, welcoming wine lovers to share in their journey of perseverance, family, and the joy of exceptional wine. Visit hoytfamilyvineyards. com to learn more.

Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio

Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio, one of Malibu’s largest wine producers, has been crafting exceptional wines for over 35 years. Located on a 28-acre estate, they grow six varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and Chardonnay. Though the vineyards are four miles inland, the tasting room enjoys a prime spot on the Pacific Coast Highway, just across from the beach. Visitors can enjoy tastings inside the airy room or relax on the expansive outdoor patio, which features bright blue umbrellas for daytime shade and bistro lights with heaters in the evening.

At Rosenthal, you can savor a glass or bottle of wine or indulge in a tasting flight. The flights offer a selection of five reds, whites, or a mix, with tastings often including both estate wines from Rosenthal and offerings from their Surfrider label. Surfrider wines are crafted from grapes sourced from other vineyards across California, allowing guests to sample varietals like Pinot Noir, Syrah, Albarino, and sparkling wines. The weekend scene at Rosenthal is lively and fun, with events ranging from food pop-ups to live music, drag bingo, and even yoga—affectionately named “vino and vinyasa.” Whether you’re enjoying a quiet afternoon with a glass of wine or taking part in one of the many events, Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio offers a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for wine lovers and visitors alike. Check their calendar for the latest happenings during your visit. For more information, visit rosenthalestatewines.com.

Cielo Farms

Cielo Farms, a family-owned winery nestled in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, offers stunning views paired with exceptional wines. Located eight miles inland from Point Dume State Beach, this Tuscan-style estate spans 35 acres and features a charming tasting room known as “The Barn.” Perched high above Malibu, it offers panoramic views of rolling hills, vineyards, and hundreds of olive trees, creating a picturesque setting for wine lovers. Guests can enjoy a leisurely tasting experience, choosing from the refreshing summer flight, which includes Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and the signature “Honey Pie” blend, or the bold Cielo flight with reds like Cabernet, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. The winery also offers a food menu featuring salads, charcuterie boards, and a decadent chocolate pairing plate, as well as wood-fired pizzas on weekends.

For a more personalized experience, consider reserving a table for a group, or indulge in the Saturdayonly “Tasting Experience at The Trail.” This three-hour guided tasting includes a curated wine experience with a resident expert, a catered Mexican lunch, and live music. Whether you’re enjoying a casual tasting or a more in-depth experience, Cielo Farms offers a perfect blend of wine, food, and breathtaking views. For more details, visit woodstockmalibu.com.

Mizel Estate Wines

Savor the season, where every sip tells a story

When the holidays arrive, the table becomes more than just a place to eat—it transforms into a space for connection, joy, and cherished memories with family and friends. Michael and Zelene Fowler, founders of Mizel Estate Wines, believe that wine plays a vital role in these moments, turning gatherings into celebrations. “Wine is a beautiful journey filled with joy, warmth, and connection,” they say, reflecting the philosophy that led them to establish Mizel Estate Wines in 2014.

In 2016, Mizel released its first vintage, marking the beginning of a commitment to crafting world-class wines. But the Fowlers’ vision extends beyond great wine. At its core, Mizel Estate is purpose-driven, with a portion of its proceeds supporting the Mizel Family Foundation, which funds educational and career opportunities for people with unique abilities. For the Fowlers, creating exceptional wine is as much about enriching their community as it is about crafting exquisite bottles.

Wine Magic

Located in the heart of Hidden Valley, Thousand Oaks—just 25 miles north of Los Angeles— Mizel Estate’s vineyard benefits from the region’s unique terroir. The fertile valley, surrounded by protective mountains and cooled by ocean breezes, provides ideal growing conditions for their grapes. Every vine is carefully managed and hand-harvested, ensuring that only the finest grapes make it into Mizel wines.

Mizel’s winemaking process is led by Guillaume Fabre, a sixth-generation French winemaker. Fabre brings an artistry honed over years of experience, carefully aging the wine in the finest French oak. Each winter, he meets with the Fowlers to blend a new vintage, taking advantage of their combined expertise to bring out the nuances of each year’s harvest. SHOP HOLIDAY WITH US

As we welcome the new year, there is no better time to reflect on the beauty and inspiration that surrounds us here in Malibu. If you are seeking ideas to refresh or reimagine your home, you won’t have to look far—our community is home to some of the most talented individuals in the world. From visionary architects and innovative interior designers to skilled artisans and creators, Malibu is a hub of creativity unlike anywhere else.

One of Malibu’s most cherished figures, Ronald Edward Goldman, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, embodies the spirit of this remarkable place. Goldman wasn’t just an award-winning architect; he was a visionary who changed the world with his designs. His creations didn’t merely stand as structures; they enriched lives, blending architecture with nature to craft harmonious spaces that inspired and soothed. Beyond his immense talent, Ron was a kind, caring family man who cherished the natural world. His legacy resonates deeply in Malibu, where he and his family’s generosity continue to shape our community. It’s a privilege to call his Ocean View Terrace office building our Malibu Magazine home.

In this issue, we also spotlight the remarkable work of interior designer Malgosia Migdal. Her philosophy goes far beyond selecting colors and furniture. For Malgosia, interior design is about understanding how people live and love their spaces. Like a magician of the home, she turns dreams into sanctuaries, blending intuition, creativity, and care to craft spaces that feel deeply personal and profoundly comforting.

For architecture enthusiasts, we highlight the incredible insights of Lorcan O’Herlihy, whose new book showcases his Malibu-based firm’s dedication to socially conscious design. With an eye for contextual sensitivity and a commitment to social equity, Lorcan’s work is a testament to the power of architecture to invigorate civic life.

As you explore these stories, may you find inspiration to create your own haven here in Malibu, where the ocean meets the sky, and every moment is a masterpiece waiting to be lived.

Welcome home. Welcome to Malibu.

Ronald Edward Goldman

Architect of Dreams, Nature Lover, and Visionary

Ronald Edward Goldman, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, was not only a celebrated and award-winning architect but also a devoted family man who left an indelible mark on the world through his extraordinary talent. He enriched lives by creating harmonious designs and landscaped environments that connected people to nature. More than an architect, Ron was a kind and caring soul, an artist whose creations, much like Proust’s masterpieces, made hearts and souls blossom. He passed away in September of this year, leaving behind a legacy of beauty and compassion.

Ron was born on May 2, 1939, at Cedars in Los Angeles. He was the Beverly Hills High School class president in 1957, quarterback, and ranked tennis player. So, too, Princeton University’s own football team starter in 1961, Ron, was ready for action. He earned his master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from MIT. Ron’s extensive repertoire included homes, schools, religious buildings, and commercial developments throughout Southern California.  The Los Angeles Times called his work “the epitome of the California dream.”

Growing up in sun-drenched Southern California, Ron loved to spend time outside in nature playing football and other sports in the streets near La Cienega Park where he broke “23 neighbors’ windows”.  Although he was a

glass breaker in his youth, later in life learned to appreciate the power of glass.   Nearly all his designs contain walls and many contain the glass ceiling “spines” which bring the outdoor sun and moon directly inside his works of art.

I was fortunate to sit down with Ron in the summer of 2022 at his office building, “Ocean View Terraces,” located at 24955 Pacific Coast Highway, where we discussed architecture, his life, and inspirations. Fun fact: The Malibu Times/Malibu Magzine office has also been located in this beautiful building since its acquisition.

Ron loved nature—especially bays where the ocean and mountains meet.  Ron inherited a small sum of money from his grandfather and used that money to buy his first property in Malibu located in Point Dume.  He bought 6 acres and designed and built six homes, including his own family home, in a quaint culdesac on Sea Ranch Way.  Ron lived in Point Dume, raising his young family from 1975 to 1982.

From 1983-1989, Ron and his family moved to, designed, and built homes in Malibu Cove Colony, another small coastal enclave – with only about 50 homes. Ron also designed and sold a Malibu Colony home to Joni Mitchell.

“Living on the beach presents an irony because you have rows of houses on narrow lots yet they all open to expansive Pacific Ocean.” Ron designed his homes and buildings to create privacy and openness through a mixture of playing with the geometry of lattice work, open and dissolving walls, and walls and ceilings of glass. His designs created privacy and openness at the same time.

Ron’s creations often include a glass skylight central corridor which he refers to as the “spine” to open up the house to the outside environment. The glass spine skylights allow the outside elements (sun, clouds, moon) to come into the home from all sides.

Ron’s creations often include a glass skylight central corridor which he referred to as the “spine” to open up the house to the outside environment.  The glass spine skylights allow the outside elements (sun, clouds, moon) to come into the home from all sides. As the sun comes up in the east and sets in the west, the glass spines make it possible for one to see the sun and moon and how the light changes hour by hour, minute by minute.  The glass skylight central corridor spines become the “backbone” of the home and leaves a sense of open expansiveness by bringing the outside environment into the house.

When building, Ron uses “motifs” that lead you through the house. For example, he used smaller meandering walkways that will lead to and open up to larger spaces and exquisite views of the ocean. Ron also aimed to enhance privacy from the street and neighbors while opening the design to embrace the beach and sky, creating a dynamic, ever-changing environment.

When asked how he creates an emotional vibe in the home that is relaxing, calm, and can even seem like a different time space dimension he answered, “Luck.” When asked again—was it intentional? Ron explained that he works with scale models. “Sometimes I see from day one what I want to do, sometimes it’s an exploration. I wouldn’t call myself a natural artist. I sketch a lot. A lot of wall forms are dissolved to create a melding of space and materials.”

"He dreamed of creating parks & open spaces for all, incorporating native plants, natural light, & spaces for community gathering. "

He was happiest in green places and spaces, and he dreamed of creating parks and open spaces for all.  When asked about what inspired Ron, his daughter Karen Goldman Craig explains, “Dad was ahead of his time.  He was practicing sustainability in the 1970s before it was the thing to do.  His designs since the 1970s have incorporated warm natural light, native plants and xeriscape, views, and gathering spaces to create a sense of human scale and community, all while respecting the natural contours of the Malibu hills and coastline.  His indoor-outdoor spaces inspired creativity, playfulness, and peace.”

When Goldman moved from Malibu back to Los Angeles, his children attended Overland Elementary School.  Ron was sad to see that the school was filled with asphalt and little to no green space.  Ron organized about 20 families to help raise awareness and funds, and he designed and built a beautiful 5,000 square foot green playground for the school children.

Incredibly, he built the new playground in about “three weekends.”  According to his daughter Karen, “It was an amazing process— dad’s process started by ripping up big sections of blacktop and replacing it with islands of playground structures, an amphitheater, and landscape and gardens.  Today it’s amazing to see kids still playing there with a gorgeous canopy of mature trees that our school’s families planted 50 years ago!  Everyone pitched in to make that playground happen.”

Ron also designed the Cross Creek Shopping Center for Fred Segal in the 1980s and his wife also had a retail store, Malibu Art & Design, in that same center.  Both Ron and his wife designed and worked from the Pacific Terraces

office building for the past thirty years.

According to his daughter, “His last project in Malibu was the Whole Foods Shopping Center where he included all his signature elements such as the natural cactus wallscapes, permeated pavers and rustic landscape to break a big parking lot into islands of art and shade.  There are also pockets of fun with foosball and other games for adults, a playground with learning activities, and gathering spaces for families.”

His legacy and dream of building green park spaces in Compton and Pacoima to serve all are still in play.  To learn more, visit re-createtorecreate. com/.

Inside the

World of Design

From vision to big reveal and every

hiccup in between

Working in interior design is a little like being a part-time mind reader, part-time therapist, and sometimes, a bit of a magician. After all, understanding what a client really wants is so much more than picking colors or furniture. It’s about reading between the lines, sensing how they’ll actually live in and love their space. My goal is to step into their world and turn it into something that feels like their sanctuary (or if they prefer, their cocktail party headquarters).

Now, here’s the thing: clients come in all types. Some are a bit… let’s say, “Adventurous with possibilities.” They have no idea what they want, and the best moment of their day is when you show them something that feels right, even if they had no clue it existed. Then, there’s the other kind: the client with taste so impeccable that even you start taking notes. These folks know what they love but just need someone to make it happen without the fifty headaches that come with construction, finishes, ordering custom couches or figuring out what color actually looks good on walls.

Here’s how we take that rollercoaster journey from blank canvas to final reveal:

Step 1: The Deep Dive

We kick things off by diving straight into the client’s world. We’re not just asking the usual, “What’s your favorite color?” but getting into the good stuff: How do you want to feel when you walk through the door? Are you craving calm, vibrant, cozy, or maybe a mix of all three? Most of the time, clients don’t have answers ready—this is where the detective work starts. I’m paying attention to their expressions, how they light up over certain finishes, fabric, or the telling silence when I show them something unexpected. These tiny clues are what make it possible to shape a space that feels like them but works like a dream.

Step 2: Concept Development

With a sense of what they’re after, I get to work creating initial mood boards and layouts. Here, we’re layering colors, textures, and furniture pieces to find the sweet spot between their preferences and a design that sings. This isn’t just about showing them pretty things but presenting their vision in a way they can actually feel. We’re not playing it safe; we’re showing them possibilities they may not have considered, even if it’s just a pinch of bold color or a statement piece that takes their breath away.

Step 3: Detailed Space Planning

Next, we’re diving into the nitty-gritty. We take those initial concepts and get technical, crafting floor plans and layouts that hit the perfect balance of beauty and functionality. We’re thinking about traffic flow, sightlines, comfort, and, let’s be honest, where they’ll plop down with a bowl of popcorn on movie night. For those “great taste” clients, this is where they can weigh in on details and where we can suggest things they might not have thought about. And for the other type of amazing client, we’re guiding them through a plan that feels like second nature to them, even if it’s new.

Step 4: Construction Documents and Finish Selections

One of the most thrilling steps in the design process is this phase of creating detailed construction documents and selecting finishes. We aren’t just picking surfaces; we’re building a roadmap that guides the contractor through each stage, like a visual blueprint of the vision we’ve crafted with our client.

We dive deep into each detail, preparing highly specific drawings with elevations, transitions, and every planned finish from floor to ceiling. This “design map” ensures the contractors know exactly how each element comes together, from where tile meets cabinetry to the layering of textures on the walls. It’s the blueprint that transforms concept into reality.

And then come the finishes—the tactile choices that bring a room to

life. We explore flooring, cabinetry, stone, lighting fixtures—every surface the client will see and touch. Often, we bring samples directly to the client’s space to show how each selection looks and feels under the actual lighting and surroundings. Sometimes, they’re surprised by choices they wouldn’t have considered but fall in love with in person. I’ve had moments where clients are stunned, saying, “I’d never pick that color myself,” and then they realize it’s exactly what they wanted. It’s about showing them a vision that feels natural and transformative.

It’s about presenting them with something they recognize and something a little more daring, creating a space that feels both familiar and fresh.

With each decision, we’re building a space that captures the essence of their vision, ensuring every texture, color, and finish is perfectly aligned to bring it to life. This is where the dream really starts to become tangible, each material a piece of the bigger story we’re telling.

Real Talk: Navigating Construction Surprises

Of course, nothing ever goes 100% as planned. Whether it’s discovering a structural wall that can’t be moved, unexpected budget bumps, or a client suddenly pivoting on a key design piece, challenges are part of the package. When these moments hit, the first step is figuring out why and what we can do about it. As a team, we’ll brainstorm creative solutions— sometimes it’s a workaround, and other times it’s rethinking the layout. Flexibility is the name of the game, and these problem-solving moments often end up giving the space an even better story.

Step 5: Furniture Selection & Showroom Visits

With the core design established, it’s time to dive into furniture and accessories, selecting pieces that balance comfort, style, and that elusive “wow” factor. This stage is where the space truly becomes theirs, where we make choices that will shape everyday moments.

Some clients have generational pieces—an armchair from Grandma or a grand table passed down from their grandfather—that they want to incorporate. These items add heart and history, and as designers, it’s our job to weave them seamlessly into the new vision. By respecting these personal pieces, we create a home that honors the past while embracing the future.

Showroom visits are also key at this stage, allowing clients to get handson with textures and finishes. Here’s where we explore bold, custom designs or unique vintage finds that add character. And if there’s something I believe is perfect for the space, I’m known to make a strong case for it! Yet, it’s all about collaboration—ultimately, we want them to feel that every choice reflects their style, that they’re heard, and that their space is deeply personal.

The result? A mix of custom, new, and vintage elements that feel curated over time, making the space warm, inviting, and far from a “straight off the showroom floor” look. Every piece is chosen with purpose, from a cozy sofa for family lounging to a table that’s ready for anything from brunches to late-night Mahjong or poker games.

Step 6: Styling & Final Touches

Finally, it’s time to get those last, all-important details in place. This is where we add the art, plants, books, and accessories that make a space feel layered and lived in. Imagine the fresh plants on the kitchen shelf or that perfect vase on the side table—the elements that turn a house into a home. We also consider what they’ll need down the line: little pots, plants, and textures that’ll keep the place feeling warm and curated long after the final installation.

The Big Reveal

And then, the moment of truth: the big reveal. This part is always thrilling (and, let’s be honest, a bit nerve-wracking). After all the hours of planning, sourcing, problem-solving, and passion we’ve poured into it, the space is finally ready. When the client walks in, there’s always this brief pause of suspense, followed by a wave of emotion—some clients gasp, others tear up, and some just stand in stunned awe. The reaction is always a mix of surprise, joy, and validation. It’s that moment when we know we’ve truly captured their vision, their story, and—most importantly—their home.

But here’s the thing: the relationship doesn’t end at the reveal. In fact, for many of our clients, it’s just the beginning. Most of our clients not only become dear friends but repeat clients, trusting us with everything from their primary residences to vacation homes around the world. Over time,

we’re not only designing spaces for them but also for their grown children and the wonderful friends they refer to us, who often become new clients themselves. This growing circle of clients feels more like an extended family than just a business network, and it’s one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

And we’re not the kind of designers who disappear after the final curtain. We make sure that after each project, we provide our clients with a detailed construction binder—a kind of “owner’s manual” for their new space. This binder includes every single detail, from flooring and paint colors to specific light bulbs, so they have everything they need to maintain and enjoy their dream home.

Honestly, that’s what makes it all worthwhile. Knowing that we’ve not only delivered a space they love but also built a lasting relationship that continues long after the final touches are made. For us, interior design isn’t just about creating beautiful

spaces—it’s about building connections, sharing in milestones, and giving our clients a place that truly feels like home. Because to us, design is not just about creating beautiful spaces—it’s about building lasting connections and giving our clients a place to truly call home.

Bringing the Vision to Life on the Page

To share this journey with you, we want to invite you into our creative world by showcasing some of the visuals that bring each project to life. Renderings, floor plans, elevations—these give a peek into our process, the heart of each project, and the details that turn ideas into reality. With these snapshots, we hope you’ll see the story, passion, and thoughtfulness that go into each layer, each corner, each choice. For us, design isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces; it’s about crafting environments that feel meaningful, and maybe these glimpses will inspire that vision for your own spaces, too.

ARCHITECTURE ROOTED IN CONTEXT & SOCIAL EQUITY

alibu-based international architect Lorcan O’Herlihy’s new book celebrates his insights into developing socially conscious buildings with great contextual sensitivity while promoting social equity and invigorating civic life.

“I think of architecture as telling a story,” Lorcan O’Herlily shares contemplatively as he’s interviewed over coffee in Malibu. Reflecting on the release of his fourth book and on the thirty-year anniversary of his industry-leading firm, Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA), an award-winning architecture and urban design firm, “Architecture can serve as a catalyst for change.”

O’Herlihy’s extensive portfolio of architectural projects reflects a deep commitment to social consciousness, urban planning, and a creative ethos that prioritizes context. His designs are thoughtfully scaled to harmonize with their surroundings, inviting engagement through open gathering spaces and complementing neighboring homes and businesses. These structures honor the historical narratives of their communities while balancing inspiring design with practical functionality.

In September, O’Herlihy released his latest book, Building in Place: Architecture Rooted in Context and Social Equity. Published in collaboration with Rizzoli, the book showcases LOHA’s innovative, solution-driven designs in Los Angeles and Detroit. O’Herlihy delves into how architecture can serve as a tool to address politics, economics, aesthetics, and sustainable growth by fostering social equity, human interaction, and cultural evolution.

ARCHITECTURE’S ROLE AS A CATALYST FOR CHANGE

One brilliant O’Herlihy design opened this summer in South Los Angeles. Created in collaboration with his non-profit developer client, Holos Communities, Isla Intersections Supportive Housing, and Paseo consists of 54 modular, strategically arranged apartments built with shipping containers that enliven a formerly undeveloped, city-owned lot located at the intersection of the 110 and the 1-5. Complete with a gray water system and a “Living Lung” to help ameliorate noise and air pollution, the site has breathed new life and hope into a formerly desolate parcel.

From minimal dwellings to university housing to vast urban plans in Detroit, Michigan and Raleigh, North Carolina, O’Herlihy re-imagines city dwellings and businesses to fit into the landscapes they inhabit with designs that make a difference in the lives of those who live and work there. Urban culture and cities have always fascinated O’Herlihy.

Architecture, he believes, should be part of a larger conversation about urbanism and should serve as a catalyst to empower cities to provide more dynamic and productive environments for all.

“With a conscious understanding that architecture operates within a layered context of political, developmental, environmental and social structures, LOHA seeks to elevate the human condition via the built environment,” Architizer, the world’s largest online community of architects, stated in recognizing the firm as number 17 in the top 100 architecture firms in the United States in 2024.

O’Herlihy views architecture as a contribution to community–built environments should be both pragmatic and facilitate revivals in abandoned and underutilized urban spaces. His third book, Architecture as a Social Act, underscores the direct connection between the development of socially designed buildings and wider efforts to tackle issues that are relevant in a rapidly changing world.

"I THINK OF ARCHITECTURE AS TELLING A STORY"

In “Surplus land: How architecture can transform underutilized public properties into affordable housing,” published in The Plan Journal, a publication that provides research concerning architecture and urbanism, O’Herlihy discusses how Los Angeles and cities nationwide are considering surplus land or underutilized land as a resource to develop new affordable housing and how architects serve to reimage the sites and integrate them into neighborhood contexts.

Adhering to—and manifesting—the philosophy that architecture can help revive urban areas has helped LOHA garner several important commissions in Detroit’s revival. Of greatest note is O’Herlihy’s design for The Four Corners Building in the ambitious Brush Park mixed use development spearheaded by Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and his real estate company, Bedrock.

O’Herlihy also worked with Detroit artist Olayami Dabis on building his African Bead Museum, an independent exhibition space devoted to African material culture and art, which comprises three townhouses and a 6,000-square-foot backyard sculpture garden that together stretch across almost an entire city block.

“The Bead Museum restoration effort has transformed a derelict, underutilized storage space into a light-filled gallery and community gathering space,” O’Herlihy explains.

Designing beautiful buildings that breathe new life into, and celebrate the legacy of urban communities is O’Herlihy’s forte.

He’s not just a creative, talented architect and urbanism advocate. O’Herlihy also is scholarly, serving as an adjunct professor at USC’s School of Architecture, lecturing widely and publishing works that share his philosophy that architectural aesthetics are often best placed in struggling areas.

Through his thoughtful and innovative projects, O’Herlihy continues to prove that architecture can serve as a powerful catalyst for social equity, cultural evolution, and urban transformation. With the release of Building in Place and decades of impactful projects behind him, O’Herlihy exemplifies how visionary design can elevate the human condition, creating not only structures but also hope, inspiration, and a sense of place. Malibu is blessed that this native local visionary calls our town home.

The Sierra

Blanca Legacy

On the sun-soaked shores of the Costa del Sol, Sierra Blanca Estates has become a name synonymous with elegance, innovation, and luxury.

Founded over 35 years ago by visionary Pedro Rodriguez, this family-led company has played a pivotal role in transforming Marbella into a global destination for exceptional residential living. Today, under the leadership of Pedro’s sons, Carlos (CEO) and Luis (COO), Sierra Blanca Estates seamlessly blends tradition with cuttingedge design, embodying a commitment to creating vibrant, livable works of art.

Redefining Luxury Living on the European Mediterranean Coast

“My father’s dream was to develop an exclusive community of luxury villas—a concept that was revolutionary for the region at the time,” recalls Luis Rodriguez. “The journey wasn’t easy, but it was deeply rewarding. That vision of creating something unique and enduring remains at the heart of everything we do.”

This vision has evolved into a steadfast dedication to niche residential projects that prioritize exceptional architecture, meticulous attention to detail, and a focus on quality over quantity. Sierra Blanca Estates now stands as a symbol of distinction along the European Mediterranean coast, crafting homes that reflect not only luxury but also a profound sense of purpose and place.

At its core, Sierra Blanca Estates is a family enterprise, and this foundation influences every aspect of its approach. Unlike large corporations, where personal connections can be rare, the Rodriguez family prioritizes meaningful relationships with clients and partners.

“The family aspect of our company is overwhelmingly positive,” Luis explains. “Clients appreciate that we are approachable and involved, unlike larger companies where you never meet the people behind the business. We’ve also built a team of employees who feel like family to us, and that sense of connection is what we extend to our clients.”

This personal touch is evident in every client interaction. From guiding buyers through the intricate process of acquiring their dream property to taking the time to understand their needs and aspirations, Sierra Blanca Estates fosters relationships that last long after the keys are handed over.

Redefining Luxury with Art and Innovation

Sierra Blanca Estates has earned a reputation for pushing creative boundaries, setting itself apart in a highly competitive market. Collaborations with world-renowned fashion and design brands like Fendi Casa and Dolce & Gabbana have introduced elements of art, culture, and innovation, redefining the traditional concept of luxury living.

“Our collaboration with Fendi Casa for EPIC Marbella has set a benchmark for the highest standard of residential resort living,” Luis Rodriguez shares. “It is, by all measures, the finest residential resort in Marbella and rivals leading developments internationally. EPIC was a great concept to begin with, but we continuously refined and elevated it at every stage to push the limits in every aspect.”

EPIC Marbella is not just a collection of homes; it is a living experience designed to inspire and enrich. The development features state-of-theart amenities, including an indoor sports complex, yoga and Pilates studios, a golf simulator, and outdoor tennis and pickleball courts. These thoughtfully curated facilities support active, family-oriented lifestyles while seamlessly blending wellness and luxury.

EPIC MARBELLA BY FENDI CASA:

A lifestyle destination that redefines luxury with unparalleled amenities and design innovation.

A breathtaking fusion of art, nature, and architecture, featuring sculpted gardens and iconic designs.

KARL LAGERFELD VILLAS MARABELLA:

The world’s only Karl Lagerfelddesigned villas: five sustainable masterpieces redefining luxury, innovation, and exclusivity.

The upcoming Marbella Design Hills project by Dolce & Gabbana promises to raise the bar even higher. This visionary development will elevate itself amongst leading branded projects and redefine true luxury living by implementing design, detail, and materials on a scale that has never before been produced. Additionally featured, meticulously landscaped gardens that function as open-air art galleries. “We’ve collaborated with one of the finest landscaping companies in Milan personally selected by Domenico Dolce,” Luis explains. “Imagine strolling through an outdoor museum, with sculptures thoughtfully integrated throughout the gardens—it will be a spectacle in itself.”

Honoring the Costa del Sol

While Sierra Blanca Estates embraces bold innovation, its projects remain deeply rooted in the cultural and natural beauty of the Costa del Sol. Each development thoughtfully reflects the region’s charm, incorporating architectural details, lush garden designs, and the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.

When asked why he believes the Costa del Sol, particularly Marbella, is so appealing for luxury residential living, Luis Rodriguez explains: “It’s the lifestyle, the weather, accessibility, outstanding gastronomic offerings, world-class sporting facilities—especially golf—and a renewed, younger dynamic of residents that has made our city more vibrant and attractive in many ways.”

This harmony with the environment also extends to sustainability, a core value for Sierra Blanca Estates. Their commitment to reducing environmental impact is exemplified by the Karl Lagerfeld Villas, which feature nearly zero carbon footprints and self-sustaining systems.

“Sustainability is not just an afterthought,” Luis emphasizes. “It’s integral to how we approach every project, ensuring that we’re not only building for today but also for future generations.”

DOLCE & GABBANA DESIGN HILLS:

Expanding Horizons

Sierra Blanca Estates is expanding its vision beyond Marbella, bringing its signature touch to new horizons. In Malaga, the Sierra Blanca Tower has redefined the city’s skyline as its first luxury high-rise residential development.

“We recognized Malaga’s potential as a luxury destination before it became the trend it is today,” Luis Rodriguez explains. “The Tower has been a tremendous success, introducing the very first luxury high-rise in Malaga and garnering international attention. This project has marked a clear ‘before and after’ in Malaga’s residential sector, paving the way for several more landmark developments to follow.”

This bold move has solidified Sierra Blanca Estates’ reputation as a trailblazer in the luxury real estate market, attracting global acclaim. Collaborations with influential figures, such as Antonio Banderas, further highlight the company’s dedication to community and culture.

“Antonio has been an incredible ambassador for us,” Luis shares. “In the early stages of the Sierra Blanca Tower project, he helped us gain visibility and market exposure. We’ve also supported his charitable foundation and, in turn, he collaborates with our own Sierra Blanca Foundation.”
