SALUTING OUR VETERANS
Celebrating Veterans Day in the North County By NICHOLAS MATTSON nic@pasoroblespress.com
NORTH COUNTY — All of us at the Atascadero News salute our local veterans on this anniversary of Armistice Day. All of us Americans enjoy our freedom and during each year we do serve our country with industry and productivity that ensures our future. Those that serve in the armed forces and veterans of war are our front lines in the fight for a better future, and the preservation of our freedoms and democracy. Our civilian citizenry works also to support them, with our profitability and industry in financial support of our standing armies to ensure that those veterans are provided with a home and freedom to return to. We take each Veterans Day to stand united in recognition of our mutual effort and purpose in ensuring our opportunity to establish a more perfect union that is always in a state of progress. Please join us in support of our veterans, our country, our freedom, and our community by attending one of the events below this Veterans Day.

The 101-yearold World War II veteran and retired rocket scientist is being humble. “I feel very fortunate,” he says referring to surviving his dive-bombing days in the war and then building the rockets that sent people into space. Monteath lives at Creston Village in Paso Robles, near his daughter Nancy Pushea and son Doug Monteath. He was born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., and remembers from an early age

Fifth annual event takes place at Paso Robles Event Center By BRIAN WILLIAMS brian@pasoroblespress.com PASO ROBLES — Gina went through the clothes on the tables Wednesday morning looking for jackets and sweaters, anything that could provide some warmth and protection from the cold and wet winter months ahead. Gina is homeless, unless sleeping along the Salinas Riverbed is considered a residence, and did not want to provide her full name. “I need everything and I know people who do too,” she said. “We are freezing, we are cold, we are starving.” She piled the clothes one after another on her right shoulder. Her hair still wet

I believe in making the world a better place.” The clothes were provided by Patty Beck at the fifth annual CommUNITY Connection in North San Luis Obispo County. Beck is retired and volunteers at 40 Prado, a newly opened homeless center in San Luis Obispo. She’s been bringing clothes to the Connection events for the past three years. She gets the clothes from Goodwill and other entities. “When I retired this was just a continuation of helping people get back on their feet,” said Beck, who has been volunteering for most of her adult CONTINUED ON PAGE A11

Paso Proposes Development Conversion Moratorium By MARK DIAZ mark@pasoroblespress.com PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles City Council passed an emergency moratorium at its meeting on Oct. 29, prohibiting properties that have multi-residential units from being converted into nonresidential uses. The temporary stopgap, according to City staff, allows the City time to complete its housing element update without losing crucial housing stock. First produced in October of 2014, the housing element is a portion of the City’s general plan analyzing housing needs for all income groups and sets policy to target housing needs. The housing element can be viewed on the City’s website at prcity. com/260/Housing-Element. According to California Government Code, Section 65858, an emergency moratorium lasts for a maximum of 45 days in which time a vote must be held to extend the freeze. A second extension would last 10 months and 15 days and would allow City staff time to finish the HEU. The update coincides with changes to California housing manCONTINUED ON PAGE A11
