SAN LUIS OBISPO — After returning to court on Monday, July 25, the Kristin Smart Murder Trial has once again been delayed.

The jury, reporters, and court officials returned to court on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with the plan to continue testimonies.

However, shortly after Monterey County Superior Court Judge Jennifer O’Keefe took her seat in the courtroom, she announced the trial would be postponed until next Monday.

Judge O’Keefe informed the court that a member of one of the juries could not attend trial due to an “unexpected emergency” and said they did not want to run through the case’s list of alternates.

The judge also said that, so far, the trial has been ahead of schedule and that the delay would not put them far behind.

Paul Flores, 45, is charged in connection to the 1996 disappearance and murder of 19-year-old Cal Poly student Kristin Smart. Paul was arrested in April 2021 — on the same day, his father, Ruben Flores, was arrested as an accessory after the fact, accused of helping his son hide Kristin’s remains.

Kristin was declared dead in 2002, but her remains have yet to be recovered.

Highway 46 Project Underway in Cholame Widening of road to make it a fourlane expressway is expected to be completed in 2024

PASO ROBLES — Construction is underway for the State Route 46 Corridor Improvement Project located between Airport Road (post mile 32.2) in Paso Robles to the east junction of State Routes 41 and 46 (post mile 57.8).

The project is divided into three sections. The most anticipated section for anyone taking the route into Paso Robles would be the Cholame section, which was approved in Febru-

ary 2020 and broke ground in March 2022 with a groundbreaking ceremony held in April.

Initiated by San Luis Obispo County Governments to improve the deadly corridor, Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham campaigned to find funds for the project from the State Transportation Improvement Fund — estimated at $124.5 million for just the 5-mile Cholame section.

Eventually, the project will widen the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane expressway.

While one of the main goals of the project is to improve the roadways for expected increasing traffic coming into the area, it is also to minimize fatal accidents and improve safety

on the highway.

Highway 46 East is one of the few east-west routes connecting Interstate 5 to U.S. Highway 101, making it highly used for travelers but also seeing daily commutes from Paso Robles, Cholame, Shandon, and Whitley Gardens. Additionally, the route facilitates high movement of goods from semi-trucks.

According to Caltrans data collected in 2017, approximately 17 percent of the traffic volume was trucks, with 60 percent of the trucks being five-axle and larger. Limited passing opportunities cause traffic to back up behind slower-moving vehicles along the remaining two-lane sections of the corridor and can increase the risk of collision as drivers attempt to pass and

overtake slower vehicles.

The project will widen Highway 46 East from Shandon to Cholame — starting at the east of the Shandon rest area to the east of the Jack Ranch Cafe.

Construction on this phase is expected to wrap up

sometime in 2024.

At the end of the project, Highway 46 East will be a four-lane expressway from Paso Robles to Lost Hills in Kern County.

City of Paso Robles Renews Tourism Improvement District Alex Villicana, owner of Villicana Winery and Re:Find Distillery was elected chairman of Travel Paso’s Board of Directors STAFF REPORT

PASO ROBLES — Travel Paso, the nonprofit marketing organization whose mission is to promote tourism, is pleased to announce its lodging members and Paso Robles City Council have renewed the Paso Robles Tourism Improvement District (PRTID) for 10 years.

The PRTID is a public-private partnership that uses a lodging assessment to help fund Travel Paso. The city collects the assessment from lodging members and distributes the funds to Travel Paso. Tourists who stay overnight at Paso’s hotels, RV parks, and vacation rentals ultimately fund the assessment. The Paso Robles City Council unanimously approved the renewal on June 7.

has for tourism and will allow us to continue to market our amazing destination,” says Travel Paso’s Executive Director Stacie Jacob, “Our community’s unified vision and support of tourism were essential in Paso Robles’ rebound from the pandemic and will remain the key to future successes moving forward.”

As Jacob declared in May, Paso Robles has officially rebounded from the pandemic and the city continues to see a record-breaking number of visitors and unprecedented tour-

ist-generated lodging tax revenues.

Tourist lodging revenues are gathered through the Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT), which is billed directly to guests at every hotel, RV resort and vacation rental.

Transient Occupancy Tax revenues are separate from the PRTID. They supplement the General Fund and are used to support a host of Paso Robles city services, including parks and recreation, the library, road improvements and the police and fire departments.

CITY

From March 2021 through April 2022 (the most recent data), each month saw record revenues. In July 2021 and April 2022, thanks in part to Travel Paso’s targeted marketing campaigns, the TOT topped $1 million.

All told the TOT has generated nearly $9 million in revenue from visiting tourists since March 2021, a record for the City of Paso Robles.

To kick off fiscal year 2022-2023 ( July 1), Travel Paso’s Board of Directors held elections and named Alex Villicana its Chairman. He is the owner and founder of Villicana Winery and Re:Find Distillery.

Villicana’s appointment marks the first time Travel Paso has elected a chairman from outside of the lodging industry. He is a longtime Travel Paso Board member who previously served as treasurer, and most recently secretary. Villicana replaces John Arnold, who expertly led the board through the pandemic.

Arnold, the general manager of the Paso Robles Holiday Inn Express & Suites, will continue to serve on the board.

“I am honored to start my tenure as chairman at such a productive and exciting time for Travel Paso,” says Villicana. “Coming from the bever-

age side, my election is proof of just how dedicated Travel Paso is to working with our city’s diverse industries and thought leaders to ensure Paso Robles continues to thrive as a top tier tourism destination.”

Three new officers were also elected.

Margaret Johnson of Paso Robles Inn & Martin Resorts will serve as vice chair; Angela McKee, general manager of Best Western Plus Black Oak, will serve as treasurer; and Victor Popp, general manager of La Quinta Inn and Suites, will serve as secretary. Additionally, three new members were elected to the nine-member board: Jill Alexander, assistant property manager at Paso Market Walk; Chance Jorgensen, general manager of Oxford Collection; and Kaitlin Walton, regional VP of operations and sales for Sun Communities.

Travel Paso’s Marketing Committee grew its membership to 19 from 14, making it the largest committee in Travel Paso’s history. The marketing committee advises the board on Travel Paso’s marketing goals and campaigns. By design, its members represent Paso Robles’ diverse tourism ecosystem, and include experts from the lodging, beverage, events and tour operator industries.

The Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) is a federally funded program that offers a one-time payment to help you pay your past due water or wastewater bills.

LIHWAP helps pay over-

due bills which accrued during any timeframe. There is no date restriction for when the overdue amount occurred.

Two Young Women Take Top Spots in Win JB Dewar Tractor Restoration Competition Winning farm vehicles will be on display through the end of fair

PASO ROBLES — Two young women dominated this year’s JB Dewar Tractor Restoration competition at the California Mid-State Fair.

Winners were announced during the Cattleman’s Day dinner on Thursday, July 21. This year marks the 22nd year of the program.

Cierra Cowden, a junior at Nipomo High School, took home Grand Champion honors with her 1951 Ford 8N, and Analisa Jorgensen, an Atascadero High School freshman, came in second place with her 1967 Cub Lo Boy. Brett Lipscomb, a senior at Heartland Charter School, came in third place with his 1948 Farmall Cub. Each year, JB Dewar and Chevron Delo reward young students who have restored an antique tractor by providing them with a platform to share their workmanship, along with the distribution of scholarships.

JB Dewar mentors and advises students, teaching them business skills, teamwork, project management, budgeting, planning, and marketing lessons in their restoration process.

This year, seven restored tractors entered the program and competed. Students can work as a team or individually on a tractor.

Students typically begin restoring their tractors in the fall and must have them complete the following July, along with their record books and presentations. From start to finish, students log in about 400 hours of work on their tractors.

Winners of the program receive award money sponsored by JB Dewar Inc. First place receives $4,000, second gets $3,000, and third place is awarded $2,000.

Used to being on the hands-on side of things, Ernstrom says it has been a different transition for her, but she has learned a great appreciation for what goes into the program.

She says, “I had some good people around me to support me and it went pretty well.”

In addition to restoration winners, one student was awarded the “Spirit of Agriculture” sponsored by Isaac Lindsey and his family.

Isaac and his brother Louis are past contestants who have each completed three tractors and are familiar with these students’ challenges.

Garcia was given the 2022 “Spirit of Agriculture” award.

“That kid was incredibly helpful and probably one of the most respectful students I’ve met,” said Erntsrom.

The program is open to all high school students from San Luis Obispo and Santa

Barbara counties. All levels of mechanical knowledge are welcome to participate in the program.

While the program and industry is mainly men, Ernstrom says she is excited to see more and more young women like herself participate in the restoration projects.

“The girls killed it,” says Ernstrom. “I’m proud of them.”

JB Dewar also accepts tractor donations. If you have a worn-out tractor sitting under a tree somewhere, donating it to the program could be the perfect way to breathe new life into the metal beast.

“I am so proud of all of the kids,” adds Ernstrom. “They did an incredible job this year like always.”

PASO ROBLES — The California Mid-State Fair [CMSF] kicked off its Michelob ULTRA Concert Series opening night (Wednesday, July 20) with American rock band and fair favorites Journey.

After limited hours and condensed musical performances in 2021, the CMSF is back in full swing. With a fully stacked lineup of musical acts performing on both the Chumash Grandstand Arena Stage and the Frontier Stage.

has graced the main grandstand in Paso Robles with their presence, and their return was spectacular. Arnel Campaner Pineda, who became Journey’s frontman in 2007, led the audience on a musical trip with vocals that

matched Journey’s original lead singer, Steve Perry. The audience joined in and sang their hearts out to their favorite songs that spanned the band’s entire catalog, covering almost 50 years of music.

The band played a set full of all their classics, including the hit songs “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” “Who’s Crying Now,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” and “Lights” to name a few. Journey also dedicated their 1983 rock ballad, “Faithfully,” to the armed forces during their set and thanked them for their sacrifices and service. The band opted to forego a traditional encore and ended their fully packed set with “Separate Ways,” “Be Good to Yourself,” and “Anyway You Want It.” Journey concluded their show by exploding confetti cannons out into the crowd at the end of “Anyway You Want It” to the cheers of their fans, both old and new.

Emmy Award nominee Doriana Sanchez will be one of the event’s celebrity guest judges. She is the creative director and choreographer behind the high energy disco routines on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Campos explained her relationship with Kristin, saying the two spent a lot of time together because Kristin did not get along with her roommate.

On the evening of Friday, May 24, Campos and Kristin parted ways in a parking lot just before Kristin walked to the party on Crandall Way. Campos did not want to go to the party, but Kristin insisted on going to find another party to attend.

Campos described the clothing Kristin was wearing that night as board shorts, a gray “baby tee” and red Pumas.

The two had been to one party that night that turned out to be uneventful. Campos recalls that at this point it had been at least three hours since Kristin finished her beer and she was sober.

The two had plans to study the next day, but Kristin never came and knocked on her door.

Campos said she relives that day often and said she wishes they’d stayed together.

Campos recalled seeing Paul Flores working at the Cal Poly Campus Store. She recalls Paul stood out to her because he would stare at her and Kristin when they went there to buy cookies, saying the interaction was uncomfortable.

Both Paul’s and Ruben’s attorneys questioned Campos about her involvement with social media sites supporting the effort to bring justice for Kristin Smart and the podcast “Your Own Backyard.”

She was heard in Episode One of the podcast and confirmed she spoke to the podcast’s creator, Chris Lambert, in 2018 or 2019.

Paul’s defense attorney Robert Sanger asked if Campos wanted Paul to be responsible for Kristin’s death. Campos replied that she wanted whoever is responsible for

daughter or her remains, followed tips, and interviewed people — estimating he spoke to around 1,000 people.

Throughout his searches, Stan told the court he never saw the Flores family out looking for Kristin.

He was then questioned by the prosecution about why he drove to Ruben Flores’ home in Arroyo Grande after his daughter went missing.

Stan told the court after learning Paul was the last person seen with Kristin, he went to Ruben’s home and testified that he stayed in his car. Ruben told him to leave because “someone could get shot.”

Stan confirmed for Sanger that he knew Ruben’s property and had been there a few times — further confirming that on Aug. 17, 1996, he followed Ruben, who was in a U-Haul truck leaving Ruben’s Arroyo Grande home. Stan said he was worried things were being taken from the home and that he missed his daughter.

Further into the questioning, Sanger asked Stan if he had ever gone to the Flores’ home with anyone. Stan responded that he did not recall, leading Sanger to ask him if anyone at the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office advised him to say he did not remember. Stan denied the accusation.

Sanger then asked Stan if Chris Lambert from the “Your Own Backyard” podcast was present with Stan during his visit to Ruben’s home in the summer of 1996.

Stan answered, saying he didn’t think so as Lambert is a young man.

Vanessa Shields The fourth witness to take the stands was Vanessa Shields — one of Kristin’s friends from Cal Poly who lived two doors down from her.

Shields told Peuvrelle that she recalls seeing Paul at two parties multiple weeks before Kristin’s disappearance. She said Paul stared intently at Kristin, calling him a creepy guy.

She further explained that Paul was always along and was not Kristin’s type, citing that Kristin did not return the

Ross Ketcham San Luis Obispo County Deputy District Attorney Christopher Peuvrelle called Ross Ketcham to the stand. Ketcham was a Cal Poly basketball player in 1996 and spoke to Kristin at the party on Crandall Way. Ketcham described briefly speaking to Kristin about surfing and noticed Paul staring at her from across the room. Later in the night, he saw the two of them talking — Paul holding his arm around Kristin.

Then Ketcham recalls hearing a loud commotion, which had been Kristin falling off a washing machine with Paul’s arm still around her.

Under cross-examination with Sanger, the defense points out that in his 2022 interview with DA investigator JT Camp, Ketchum said Paul was hanging by Kristin but never mentioned that he had

Kendra Koed The fifth witness, Kendra Koed, was a student at Cuesta College in May 1996 and present at the house party on 135 Crandall Way in San Luis Obispo.

Koed walked the jury through the events of the party where Kristin and Paul were present.

When asking around for gum, Koed says Paul approached her and began kissing her, and she pushed him away. Koed then followed Paul outside, thinking Paul was going to his car for gum, but Paul attempted to kiss her again. This time, Koed left Paul and returned to the party, telling her friends what had just happened.

Koed recalled seeing a “tall girl” come through the front door while greeting a friend. She later identified the “tall girl” as Kristin Smart who she saw fall to the ground while at the party with Paul standing over her.

She describes the interaction as uncomfortable.

During questioning by Peuvrelle, Koed said she then helped Kristin outside on the front patio where she noticed Kristin didn’t seem sober, and that she needed a friend.

Kristin told Koed that her name was Roxy, and Koed says she warned Kristin to stay away from Paul.

When leaving the party, Koed says she saw Kristin lying down on the driveway outside of the house. Koed told the jury she asked Kristin if she needed a ride home, but Kristin told her she already had one.

Under cross-examination with Sanger, he asked Koed why she didn’t tell Cal Poly Police this information in 1996, to which Koed said she did tell them everything that happened at the party.

Koed confirms she was interviewed by Detective Mike Kennedy over the phone on May 31, 1996, but she doesn’t know how much of her story he wrote down.

W itness testimonies continued on Monday, July 25, at the Monterey County Superior Courthouse in Salinas.

Paul remains in Monterey County Jail without bail, while his father Ruben was released on bail shortly after his arrest in April 2021.

There will be no live footage or audio/ video recordings allowed in the courtroom, as ordered by the judge. Only still photography is allowed. The trial is expected to last through October.

Sanger asked Ketchum if it’s fair to say he can’t recall if Paul had his arm around Kristin or not — Ketchum replied no because Paul’s arm was around Kristin.

Cheryl Anderson-Manzer Peuvrelle then called Cheryl Anderson-Manzer to the stand.

Manzer was a freshman at Cal Poly in 1996 and walked Kristin Smart back to campus after the Crandall Way party.

When the party was over, Anderson-Manzer said her friends had already left, but her friend Tim Davis offered to walk her back to her dorm. When they left, Davis found Kristin lying somewhere in the front yard and helped her up and the three of them were going

to walk home, according to Anderson-Manzer.

She recalled Kristin was very intoxicated and as the three of them were walking, Paul appeared unexpectedly. Because she was no longer walking alone, Anderson-Manzer told Davis he could leave.

Anderson-Manzer recalls Paul stopping multiple times with Kristin, rubbing her arms up and down.

According to Anderson-Manzer, Paul told her she could go ahead of them but she did not want to walk alone and waited.

Manzer testified that Paul asked her for a hug and a kiss before she walked away on her own. She said she refused his advances and then left Paul with Kristin — a decision she says she regrets.

Paul is charged with murder and faces a sentence of 25 years to life.

Ruben is charged as an accessory and if convicted, faces up to three years in jail.

The trial is set to resume on Monday, Aug. 1, at 8:30 a.m.

Mother Arrested for Child Endangerment A mother was arrested in San Luis Obispo for child endangerment likely to cause great bodily injury or death.

The Sheriff ’s Office Special Operations Unit Detectives served a search warrant on June 15 at a resident in the 200 block of Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. The operation led to the arrest of Brynn Maddox (28) for causing child endangerment to her 5-year-old child.

Two other adult relatives lived in the home.

Detectives seized numerous items of narcotics (fentanyl) and narcotic paraphernalia in locations in the living room that were easily accessible to the child.

The excessive accumulation of garbage, severe lice infestation, and the lack of running water made the living conditions unsanitary and unsafe for the child.

The child was removed from the residence by Child Protective Services.

The child would later test positive for fentanyl in their system. Brynn Maddox was booked at the San Luis Obispo County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

Ultimately, Maddox was released on June 22 on a Post Arraignment Monitoring System.

PRPD Respond to Armed Robbery Thursday Morning Paso Robles Police Department responded to an armed robbery early on Thursday, July 21.

Law enforcement received a call at approximately 6:44 a.m. on Thursday morning from an employee at Carl’s Jr. on Black Oak Drive. The employee reported an armed robbery had just occurred.

The suspect is described to be a medium-built Hispanic male adult, approximately 5’7”, wearing a grey sweater, black pants, a black mask, and a blue backpack, who had just robbed the business of an undisclosed amount of cash and coins.

The suspect displayed a small, black semi-automatic style handgun during the commission of this crime.

He escorted the two employees to a walk-in freezer and instructed them to remain in the freezer for 10 minutes.

The two employees followed the directions provided and immediately called 911 once they exited the freezer.

TEMPLETON — A San Luis Obispo County jury found Jeffrey Paul Gentile (35) guilty of possession of child pornography and found true that he possessed at least 600 images with at least 10 of those depicting children under the age of 12.

District Attorney Dan Dow announced on Tuesday, July 26 that a San Luis Obispo County jury convicted Templeton resident Gentile (DOB 09/02/1986) of possession of child pornography after a week-long trial.

The jury also found true that Gentile possessed at least 600 images of child pornography, with at least 10 of those images depicting prepubescent children

On March 1, 2015, Arroyo Grande Police Department Detective Jim Jolly, while assigned as a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Taskforce, received evidence that a particular computer was sharing child pornography with other computers over the internet. Detective Jolly’s investigation traced the computer’s internet protocol (IP) address to Gentile’s residence in Templeton.

Due to the geographic location of the offending computer, the investigation was turned over to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Office. A search warrant for the residence was authorized resulting in the seizure of Gentile’s computer. A forensic search of that computer revealed more than 40 videos depicting explicit child pornography, the equivalent of more than 2,100 images of child pornography.

“Child pornography is exploitation that causes immeasurable harm to its victims when the material is created, and again each and every time it is viewed by another person,” said Dow. “Individuals who possess child pornography fuel the demand for this despicable product and perpetuate the exploitation of children. Many child molesters possess child pornography, and they often use it to desensitize their targeted victims. Our office is committed to the aggressive prosecution of these individuals and to hold them accountable.”

To illustrate the extreme harm caused by the proliferation of child pornography, the following is an excerpt from an article published by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention: “Today’s Internet is also rapidly becoming the marketplace for offenders seeking to acquire material for their child pornography collections. More insidious than the exchange of sexually explicit material among adults, child pornography often depicts the sexual assault of a child and is often used by child molesters to recruit, seduce, and control their victims. Although not all molesters collect pornography and not all child pornography collectors molest children, significant consensus exists among law enforcement officers about the role pornography plays in recruiting and controlling new victims.

Pornography is used to break down inhibitions and validate sex between children and adults as normal, and it enables the offender to have power over the victim throughout the molestation. When the

offender loses interest, pictures of the victim are often used as blackmail to ensure the child’s silence, and when these pictures are posted on the Internet, they become an enduring and irretrievable record of the victimization and a relentless, shame-inducing violation of that child’s privacy.” ojp. gov/pdffiles1/ojjdp/191213.pdf Gentile is scheduled to be sentenced on September 14, in Department 1 of the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court, the Honorable Jacquelyn Duffy presiding. The case was investigated by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Office and the Arroyo Grande Police Department with the assistance of the District Attorney’s Office Central Coast Cyber Forensic Laboratory.

Easter began taking photographs while in grammar school and finds beauty in interesting things on the Central Coast. Redwings is always looking for volunteers to help us provide the highest standard of care for our horses and burros. You do not need to have any prior horse experience to volunteer at Redwings. If you would like to work with our horses, the first step is to take a Volunteer Training Class.

This class covers sanctuary rules, basic safe horsemanship skills, and an introduction to some of the horses that you will be working with. After completion of the class you are welcome to come volunteer and help with the horses any time during our volunteer hours. Volunteer hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 3:30pm, and we are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Note: We do not allow volunteers to ride the horses at Redwings.

There are other ways to get involved and volunteer at Redwings too. We have opportunities to help in our rose and memorial garden, volunteering in the office, helping with events and fundraising, and more. RUDOLPHO J. GARZA 1956 – 2022

R

udolpho Jesus Garza, better known as Rudy Garza, Jr. (Rudy-boy to close family and friends), passed away July 16, 2022, a day ahead of his 66th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lupe and Rudy Garza, Sr., his brother Gabe Garza, and his beloved dog Gordo. He is survived by his sister Rose Garza Corley, his brothers Keno, Tony, and Paul Garza, and many nieces, nephews,

cousins, godchildren, and a whole town of friends.

Although many a lady tried, he never married. Rudy graduated class of ‘74 from Atascadero High and made his living as a talented fabricator and welder. He loved to go fishing. He would tell you his chili verde was world famous. He liked to play his music loud and could sing every word of almost any song, from George Clinton and The Parliaments to Ariana Grande. If you ran into him at the laundry mat or the grocery store, Rudy would be quick to flirt or share with you a bit of useless trivia. Rudy was a friend to the homeless and gave generously of his time and heart to those in need.

He will be deeply missed, and his place in our family will never be forgotten. Our solace lies in knowing he is at peace in the presence of our Lord.

1955. Upon returning from Korea, he married the love of his life, Caroline White, on February 5, 1955, making their first home in a house he had built himself. obert A. Righetti, 91, a longtime resident of Pozo, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on June 28, 2022, at his beloved ranch in Pozo, CA. Robert was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Santa Maria, CA., the second of 5 children born to Alfred Edward and Susie “Marie” Righetti of Casmalia.

He attended Pozo & Santa Margarita grammar schools and Atascadero High School. As a youth, he raised steers in 4-H, worked on his family ranch, grandparents’ dairy, as well as numerous ranches in Pozo & Carrizo Plains, baling hay & tractor work.

Being raised on his parent’s cattle ranch in Pozo, Robert learned to be a hard worker at a very young age. His father was a Foreman with the U.S. Forest Service, Pozo station, patrolling the forest on horseback. In 1943 at the age of 12, Robert began assisting his father & learning fire characteristics.

In 1948, at age 17, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Seabee’s Battalion operating heavy equipment and explosives during the Korean War. Following four years in the Navy, his service to the country and community didn’t end after an honorable discharge. He began his 30-year career in the Los Padres National Forest in 1952 with the U.S. Forest Service in the San Luis Obispo Ranger District at the Cerro Alto station.

On July 9, 1955, Robert married Marilyn Yeary of Atascadero. The couple moved to the Pozo Forest Service station in 1956 and welcomed their first daughter Denise, and in 1958 second daughter Julie was born.

n Thursday, July 7, 2022, Daniel Thomas Edwards passed away at the age of 72 at his home in Cambria, California, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with Parkinson’s and dementia.

Dan was born on July 26, 1949, in Long Beach, California, to Orville and Letitia Edwards. Dan was a skilled carpenter and general contractor who took great pride in his trade.

Dan had a passion for surfing, and enjoyed fishing, camping, watching

ous hobbies, interests, and sports teams. In 2005 Don and Caroline celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and a few months later moved back to Pryor to enjoy retirement in his hometown.

Don was extremely proud of his service to his country and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 10365 in Pryor. Don always had his Korean War Vet hat on when leaving the house and loved riding in the Veterans Day Parades. In his spare time, Don loved working with his hands, tinkering in his shop, completing various woodworking projects, and could always be spotted with a baby in his arms or on his lap. Don was a family man and will fondly be remembered for his hard work and dedication to his family and country.

He is survived by his wife Angela, his brother Barry, his children Jeff and Jennifer, son-in-law Chris, his stepchildren Monica Bart, Bart, and Gino, and his grandchildren Ciera, Dylan, Daniel, Andrew, and his great-grandsons Mykah, Isaiah and Jackson.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 1:00 pm at San Simeon Cove. The family will barbecue Dan’s favorite tri-tip and make his special Chicken George beans. Please BYOB, a side dish, chairs, and stories to share as we say goodbye to Daniel T for Trouble.

cian at Ozena station. A year later, he transferred to Santa Barbara District as Assistant Fire Management Officer in charge of suppression. In 1962 he accepted the Assistant Fire Management Officer position in the Ojai District. While living in Ojai, third daughter Jana was born in 1964.

Promoted in 1965, Bob became the District Fire Management Officer in the Santa Maria Ranger District. Flying air attack on many fires, he was the first-night air attack boss to fly on the Los Padres Forest and was believed to be the first in the nation.

Bob helped develop Southern California fire prescriptions and worked with the National Training Team developing a guide which became the Incident Command System. One of his career highlights was co-writing the Logistics Chief Training Plan, still in use today. He was at the forefront and instrumental in developing safety equipment & gear for Fire personnel. Safety was always his mission. Respected and highly regarded in his field, Bob taught various fire suppression and incident command classes throughout the western United States and retired as a Type 1 Logistics Chief within the incident command system. Bob absolutely loved his job and considered the people he worked with family and family was important to him.

An excellent loving, and supportive father to his three girls. Whether it involved a livestock show, building pens, tightening a cinch before a rodeo performance, or helping start a new business, he was always there right up to his passing.

Bob’s greatest joy began when he became a grand & great grandfather. He delighted in being able to help raise, and attended every school program, dance recital, sports event, or the years of driving the daily 40-mile round trip school drop-off and pick up’s. Bob loved these children beyond measure.

When Bob retired from the USFS, he went on to work for many years as a heavy equipment operator with Fesler, R.W. Scott & Whitaker construction companies. Able to operate any large piece of equipment, Bob was a master at and well known for his exceptional dozer work.

In 1994 Bob and Marilyn moved back to the Pozo ranch. When not pushing dirt with a dozer,

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Stephens-Key Chapel in Pryor.

The celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Brother Thomas Ballard officiating. The interment will follow at Graham Cemetery in Pryor, OK. Casket bearers will be his grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Friends may give memorial gifts in Don’s memory to the VFW Post 10365 in Pryor, OK. Online condolences may be made at www.stephens-key. com or on the funeral home Facebook page. Arrangements are in the care of the Stephens-Key Funeral and Cremation Care of Pryor.

Bob pulled their 5th wheel trailer visiting all the national parks and friends throughout the U.S. & Canada.

In the Santa Maria community, Bob was active as a 4-H leader, S.B. Co Fair volunteer, VFW Orcutt Post, Elks 1538 member working many Rodeos & BBQs. In San Luis Obispo Co., he could be found barbecuing at the Pozo Saloon for concerts & events, volunteering at Santa Margarita Senior Center with ECHO, the Mid-State Fair, or serving on the Santa Margarita Area Advisory Council, just to name a few.

He felt it an honor to be able to be one of the founding members of and serve as Vice President for the San Luis Obispo Co. Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial in Atascadero. Living a full, active, and long life, Robert took great pride in serving his country, communities, family, and friends . . . all of which he loved dearly. A mentor to many, he enjoyed helping others and truly cherished his lifelong and dear friends and neighbors.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Alfred & Marie, sisters Emma & Loretta, brother Alan, Marilyn, wife of 64 years, and daughter Jana.

Left to cherish his memories while he rests in Gods hands until reunited in heaven are sister Alice Gouff, daughters Denise Selle (Steve) & Julie Righetti, granddaughter Sarah Sheppard, grandson Cameron Card, great-granddaughter Riley Sheppard, great-grandson Thomas Westbrook, many nieces & nephews.

Bob’s whole life consisted of serving others, leaving all the lives and land he touched in a better place. Never to be forgotten… we salute you!

long with the high use of toxic non-recyclable chemicals and minerals in ZEV half-ton batteries presented last month, solar panels also have toxic elements in the processing of the panels.

Changing silicate into silicon needs processing with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrogen fluoride, trichloroethane, and acetone. Plus, they also need gallium, arsenide, copper-indium-gallium-diselenide, and cadmium-telluride, which are most highly toxic.

Silicon dust is a toxic hazard for the workers in the plants, and, again, there are products in the panels that can not be recycled yet, so off to the dump they go along with the batteries. Solar panels are now being made to have a useful life of about 25 years, and then they start losing efficiency. With the recent boom in the last couple of decades, we have a bunch coming offline and need to be replaced.

New Rules Will Help Utilities, Not Their Customers

he California Public Utilities Commission says it wants to help the little folks as it gets set to issue new rules governing the price of rooftop solar energy throughout the state.

China supplies 80 percent of the world’s solar panels relying on coal-powered electricity to produce them. Our tariff war with them is severely curtailing deliveries. So installing solar panels to reduce emissions, how long using them on your roof before being truly emission-free after all the embedded costs of the coal, silicon, and other scarce rare earth metals to be dug, hauled to processing sites, processed, shipped overseas, stored, and hauled around the states to be installed using on the most part non-renewable energy?

We have solar on our roof here in San Luis Obispo going on five years recouping the installation cost from the power price saving and in another four years might break even. However, PG&E wants to charge us a new hefty user fee plus cut back on what they pay us for our extra produced energy going to the grid.

That’s because, for more than half a century, every major decision from this scandal-prone agency has favored large monopolistic utility companies over their customers.

From its refusal to shut down leaky natural gas storage facilities that pose health hazards for many thousands to its constant approvals of unreasonable rate increases that make California energy the nation’s most expensive, there has never been much doubt about whose interests the PUC considers paramount.

When companies like Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric start wildfires that kill hundreds and cause billions of dollars in damage, the PUC makes sure they stay whole and solvent, while the custom-

officials about how Trump illegally pressured the vice president, the Department of Justice, and state legislatures to overturn the election he knew he lost. And when it didn’t work, he summoned an armed mob to march on the Capitol Building in a final, violent attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

These insurrectionists haven’t gone anywhere. In fact, more than 100 of them have already won their primaries.

with adhesives and sealants that make it hard to break them apart (de-manufacture). Besides, 75 percent of the stuff that gets separated is glass and not worth much, which is a disincentive to mess around with recycling.

Companies are trying to figure out ways to come up with an economical way to recycle some of the material, mainly reuse of the glass into new panels. But with big solar farms, more rooftop installations, and mandates, there is going to be a whole lot more in the next few decades to handle, which means increased dump disposal.

Windmills are also problematic and we have a big project offshore from Morro Bay being proposed amid concerns about the potential negative impacts on fishes, marine mammals, invertebrates, birds, and bats from collision, habitat displacement, and exposure to electromagnetic fields, visual pollution, and underwater noise confusing migrating whales and fish species passing along our coast.

Windmills are probably the worst of the technologies because of the embedded cost and environmental destruction. Each large windmill weighs around 1,700 tons (23 average homes). They contain 1,300 tons of concrete, 295 tons of steel, 48 tons of iron, and 24 tons of fiberglass, plus hard-to-dig-and-process rare earth neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium. The three blades each weigh 81,000 pounds, the width of a football field. The

turbine has over 8,000 parts, and has a life span of 15 to 20 years, then needs to be replaced. These huge used fiberglass blades also cannot be efficiently recycled, and are expensive to transport by diesel trucks to the dump.

Each windmill holds 700 gallons (2.5 tons) of oil and hydraulic fluid and, like a car, needs to be replaced every nine to 16 months.

Say what — oil to produce wind electricity?

It is a sad fact, and not much is reported, that an estimated 1.2 million birds and bats are killed every year by wind turbines in the United States. Most big wind farms, and the same for big solar projects, are located far away from the power grid and require new power lines. These new lines will add to the estimated (2014 study) of the astounding 25.5 million birds killed by collisions with the power lines and another 5.6 million killed by electrocutions. Then there is the problem of landowners, cities, and other stakeholders not wanting large powerlines passing through or over their properties which is holding up many new projects.

Build it, but how in the heck are you going to get the energy to where it is needed.

Wind power is a direct threat to raptors (hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, and vultures) — many already endangered — and also other large birds, such as geese, ducks, swans, and cranes. I have a friend who leased out his grazing land for a large windmill farm on Highway 12, between Fairfield

So it is again this summer, as the PUC – without any public demand for “reform” – gets set to issue a new set of rules for pricing of rooftop solar energy.

Never mind that homeowners who invested tens of thousands of dollars in solar panels and battery systems were promised beforehand they’d get certain levels of payment for excess power they generate and put into the general grid. Now the PUC wants to lower those payments and thus the incentives for building more and more renewable energy into urban and suburban areas.

Just how much will likely become known in the next month or two. An earlier iteration of the upcoming changes was dumped last winter amid a firestorm of protest. Why would the PUC want to change the current, very

productive system at all? It claims to be acting to save money for people who can’t afford to install solar and for renters who have no authority to add it.

For every dollar paid by solar owners, the PUC says, rates rise a fraction of a cent or so for everyone else. What the commission has never admitted is that the alternative – bringing solar thermal energy vast distances to the cities from gigantic solar farms in the state’s vast and sun-soaked deserts – would raise rates for the little guys far more.

That additional money would go to the big utilities, whose rates are based partly on how much they spend building or buying facilities and equipment. It takes hundreds of miles of transmission lines to bring power from solar thermal farms to the cities. This translates to billions of dollars in expenses and a guaranteed

Perfect places for them. I am not completely against big solar farms, ZEV batteries, and windmills but I just don’t think in the present form they going to be sustainable in the long run because of their embedded costs, damage to the environment, earth’s crust, wildlife, and materials either in short supply or controlled by offshore countries

that are not our friends. Throw in cheap convict labor in China and child labor in some of the countries like the Congo where kids are pulled out of school, many barefooted, to work the toxic cobalt mines where 69 percent of it comes from for ZEV batteries for $1.60 per day, six days a week and 10 hours a day (not even a “Hamilton”) where too many become sick, die, and doomed to a horrible life. Oh well, out of sight out of mind, like the large solar farms and ocean windmills.

It is just green energy transference away from our plentiful fossil fuels, which now surely could be beneficial in so many ways if allowed to increase production here. It is needed now with Russia shutting off pipelines to Europe and other countries, our present administration canceling offshore lease sales and needed almost-finished pipelines, unsuccessfully begging the Saudis and other OPEC countries for more fuel, and impossible to meet one-man federal and state mandates especially since just a few years ago we were energy independent and an exporter.

Green energy is not ready for “prime time”, so let’s use more of what we can produce here while transitioning to “green” and put more energy into developing safer environmentally homegrown new sustainable power sources. Next month, new game-changing ideas for homegrown energy.

So yes, the utilities want ever more solar in the deserts and even less in the cities and suburbs. And the PUC, always looking after their interests while making pious claims to the contrary, is getting set to provide just that as the state seeks to use 100 percent renewable power within decades.

One example: Within days of the PUC making its initial proposal to cut compensation to rooftop solar owners, the federal government okayed building two new solar thermal farms deep in the Mojave Desert. Expect utilities that will buy up that energy to start building new transmission lines to those locations soon after ground is broken.

The idea of penalizing pioneering energy-conscious homeowners actually originated with the often

misguided former Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez of San Diego, also the author of the highly destructive AB 5 that wrecked the professional lives of many freelancers and others. She proposed reneging on the longtime guarantee promising homeowners the rules would remain stable for at least 20 years after any rooftop solar system goes in.

What’s more, the PUC proposed a monthly fee of about $50 to $70 for each rooftop owner, plus price reductions for their extra output. That didn’t fly, at least not yet. No one knows just what the new proposal will contain, but one thing seems sure: It will again place the interests of the big utilities over those of their customers.

ecently our health insurance company switched us from an HMO to a PPO, whatever that is. But the medical group my great doctor is a part of doesn’t take PPO, so we were told we had to switch doctors. I told my doctor, “How ‘bout if I just pay you in cash or by check out of my own pocket, and we forget about the insurance company. I want to keep you as my doctor.”

Here are his exact words in response: “We don’t take cash.”

Can you believe that?

During the COVID crisis, my elderly neurologist, who was also a great doctor, got scared and stopped seeing his patients.

In fact, he went out of business without telling anyone. He has all my records, and his phone no longer works.

I was given a choice of two local neurologists, one I’d already been to and quit, and the other

one can’t see me until November after calling for the appointment in April. This for a patient who is having seizures, terrible headaches, and mobility problems, all as a result of a couple strokes, and I can’t see a neurologist for seven months!

The reason I liked my former doctor was that he was old school. If you go to a new young doctor today, I guarantee they’re going to do three things: they’re gonna write you a prescription for some drug, refer you to another doctor, and check your prostate. (My new doctor said my prostate felt good, but I didn’t think so.) And that’s the sum total of what your doc will do, so you have no choice but to be your own doctor.

I’m also having to have my teeth pulled because all the poisonous medicines they gave me to save my life rotted my teeth. During a recent toothache, I asked my wife, “What did people do before they had dentists when they had a terrible toothache?”

She replied, “They died. Or they drank a lot of whiskey.”

But if I drink alcohol, I get acute pancreatitis, and the

death option doesn’t appeal to me! So, being my own doctor, I researched the matter and came up with a couple old-time remedies. I could tickle a mule’s foot or spit into a frog’s mouth and ask it to leave and take my toothache with it. Or, I could wet the forefinger of my right hand and cross the front of my left shoe three times while reciting the Lord’s Prayer backwards.

My research on toothaches was proving so beneficial I wondered if some old-time solution could get rid of my headaches and seizures. I found one old remedy that sounded promising. I was supposed to lean against a tree and have my wife stand on the opposite side of the tree and pound a nail into the tree trunk. We tried it. The tree died, and I still had a headache.

In other words, it worked about as well as the pain meds the docs prescribe. The docs are so afraid of being caught up in the opioid crises that the pain pills they prescribe are like sugar pills. After the doc pulled my last tooth, a rotten molar, he sent me home without any

11⁄2 teaspoons water 1⁄2 teaspoon lemon juice 1⁄2 cup quick-cooking oats 1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour 1⁄4 cup packed brown sugar 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄4 cup cold butter or margarine Vanilla ice cream

Directions: Place blackberries in a greased 1-quart baking dish.

In a small bowl combine sugar, cornstarch, water and lemon juice until smooth. Pour over berries. Combine oats, flour, brown sugar and cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly.

Sprinkle over berries. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until filling is bubbly. Serve warm with ice cream. Yield: 2 servings Enjoy the rest of the Mid-State Fair and the great weather here in North County.

Many years ago, the chronic pain was eating me up, so my wife and I went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It’s supposed to be the best, right? We spent a week there, and I was assigned a doctor who spent the week playing hide and seek with me. I saw him a grand total of two times!

After being home from the wasted trip, I got a letter from my Mayo doc telling me that to get rid of my pain, I needed this very tricky operation, but only a few docs could perform it. So I asked my surgeon if he could do it, and he said, “Why not?”

So he put in about three miles of dacron tubing to replace the arteries going to my internal organs. My surgeon had a sick sense of humor, and in his follow-up report, he wrote, “The patient left the hospital feeling much better except for his original complaints.”

So cowboys, next time you get sick, I have two words of advice: Heal thyself.

The Atascadero Printery Foundation is a nonprofit organization that owns the historic 1915 building, one of the first buildings built in Atascadero.

The building was damaged in 2003 during the San Simeon earthquake and has been red

n my last meditation, I talked about the biblical history of God living with and indwelling believers. This is a provision made possible by Christ’s salvation. A believer has been forgiven of his sins and made a holy saint, which makes it possible for a holy God to live with and in every believer.

The Bible clearly teaches that man has an immortal soul (Matthew 10:28, 2 Corinthians 5:6-8, Philippians 1:2123) and, in a future resurrection, will have an immortal body (1 Corinthians 15:35-58). This simply means that believers will live forever just like Jesus (Revelation 1:17-18, Philippi-

ans 3:20-21) because they have everlasting life and an immortal body ( John 3:16-18, 5:24-29).

Jesus also clearly promised His disciples that He was going to return to heaven after His death and resurrection to prepare a special place for believers who are church saints to live.

Church saints are the bride of Christ and Jesus will live with His bride in this prepared place ( John 14:1-6, 2 Corinthians 11:1-2, Ephesians 5:22-33).

Jesus made this unique promise to His disciples in John 14:16. Jesus didn’t want His disciples to be troubled about His announcement that He would soon be leaving them. He told them that He would be going back to heaven to prepare a single dwelling place for all of His bride ( John 14:1-3).

After preparing this place in heaven, Jesus would come again at the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) and gather all church

saints unto Himself so that they could begin to live with Him forever. This is the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). Jesus then made an alarming statement: “And you know the way where I am going” ( John 14:4).

This statement made Thomas respond by saying that none of the disciples knew the way of getting into this prepared place.

Secondly, he asked the question: “how do we know the way?” ( John 14:5).

Jesus clearly answered the question with two distinct points: 1) Jesus was the way, the truth and life. Belief in Jesus as the Savior is the way into this prepared place in heaven.

2) No one gets entrance into this prepared place except thru Jesus. Only a person who has accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior will enter this special place. The clear truth

taught by Jesus is: Heaven is a Prepared Place for Prepared People.

There is only one Savior and one way to go to heaven. God sent His only begotten Son to deliver the world from perishing ( John 3:16). There is only one true gospel of Grace: Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again to live forever (1 Corinthians 15:1-5). Have you prepared yourself to go heaven?

Lessons to Be Learned 1. Jesus promised believers to live with Him forever in a prepared place in heaven.

2. Jesus promised to come again and take all church saints to a place prepared for them.

3. Jesus proclaimed to Be the only way to get into this prepared place.

She went on to say that she’s seen many of her friends, who’ve competed in years prior, go on to do incredible things after their time in the pageant, and that she’s excited for the year to come.

First Runner-Up went

to Templeton’s Sarah Barr.

The 19-year-old is currently attending Cuesta College. She also teaches dance at Artistry in Motion and, during the pageant, performed a contemporary dance routine to Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” as her talent.

“After all of it [the competition] was over; I felt like I accomplished something with

within the inequalities. It’s about relationships.”

Artists, community activists, members of the nonprofit SLO County Arts Council (which is the project’s fiscal sponsor), photojournalist Richard Facillo, Cal Poly Liberal Arts Professor Jenny Ashley, Developer Z Villages, and more are all part of the Mural Development Committee. The committee collectively came up with the proposal for the murals and spread the word about the project as it continues.

“We wanted a lot more locals to be at the forefront of the project, so a majority of the artists that we chose happen to be local,” Carranza said. “A couple of them are from Atascadero.

But we do have sprinkled in of the 10 artists that we chose, a few that are not local. A few of them are Cal Poly and

“I was quite surprised, very honored, and very grateful to the Farm Bureau for the recognition,” said Bordonaro.

The Agriculturalist of the Year award recognizes distinguished success in the agriculture industry and a lifetime of dedication to advancing San Luis Obispo County’s rich farming and ranching heritage.

Through his community service to local youth and his advocacy as an elected official, few have done more for SLO County’s agriculture community than Bordonaro.

While Bordonaro wasn’t born into a generational agriculture family, he was drawn to the lifestyle at a young age. At the age of 9, he began 4-H and continued showing animals through FFA in high school.

To this day, Bordonaro is a key supporter of the organizations.

“It is a great program that helps develop good leadership skills in youth,” he says, “It

a crown or no crown. I just feel so accomplished about what I did tonight,” added Barr, who also won the pageant’s interview scholarship. “I’m just really happy to be on the court this year and be with these amazing girls and get to share this experience with them.”

Paso Robles’ own Jenna Shapero rounded out the 2022 Court as Second Runner-Up.

Carranza went on to say that the murals explore equality in all different ways, from bio-diversity to Japanese wood blocks with a cultural perspective.

“The theme really is equality for all. We want there to be the theme of equity and whatever that looks like for people,” she added.

All monies raised for the Equality Mural Project go directly to the artists, and each one is paid $5,000 for their work.

“None of the funds that we, I will say, none of it goes to any overhead of admin,” stated Carranza. “So all of the folks on the committee are working for free because they want this to happen. The artists need to be paid.”

Bordonaro headed to Cal Poly with aspirations to become a veterinarian, but being left paralyzed from a car accident at the age of 18, he switched gears while remaining in the agriculture industry.

“I was not supposed to live through the night, and I did,” said Bordonaro, “so I have been taking advantage of that and taking life as it comes and making the best of it. Not wining about things but understanding it could always be worse.”

By 1986, Bordonaro had earned his bachelor’s degree in ag management from Cal Poly in 1983, and a Master’s in ag economics from UC Davis. He continued to help manage his family’s farm, Bar TJ Ranch, in Creston, raising cattle, hay, and wine grapes.

Through his nearly 30 years of advocating for local agriculturists and business owners, Bordonaro has walked the halls of the State Capitol serving in public office for the first time in 1994.

Bordonaro won the 33rd District primary and served a second term as state assemblyman. He was appointed by two different governors to serve as a commissioner on the California Board of Prison Terms.

Since 2003, SLO County voters have tasked him as their county assessor.

Bordonaro has lent his leadership skills to several organizations, including being president and a member of the executive and legislative commit-

At the pageant, Jenna displayed her welding prowess with a presentation for the judges and audience that included showing off metal flowers she created with her own hands.

“It’s unbelievable. I can’t

“I’d say the biggest supporter, if not individual donations, has been the Tourism Business Improvement District,” added Carranza. “They’ve donated. I think this is their second cycle of donations. Visit Atascadero has been a very big supporter of this.

Mostly I think because they see it as a huge win-win.”

The project also funds artists with private donations that are given through the SLO County Arts Council with a memo that reads that the funds should go to the Equality Mural Project. The property and building owners of the buildings being painted have also helped with funding and providing other services free of charge. Peter Worley of Signature Painting donates his time and product to put sealant on the murals, and

San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau has given the Agriculturalist of the Year award annually since 1988, making Bordonaro the 34th person to receive this honor.

Sarah Kramer, Cattlewoman of the Year San Luis Obispo County Cattlewomen selected Paso Robles community leader Sarah Kramer as the 2022 Cattlewoman of the Year.

“It’s a great honor to be around all these people who have been around so long,” said Kramer.

Kramer’s affinity for the agriculture industry came from her grandfather, a produce broker from Orange County. Her grandfather’s work gave Kramer first-hand knowledge of how important agriculture is to the world — and how much work it takes to get it there.

After graduating from Cal Poly in 2001, Kramer, like many Poly grads, didn’t want to leave.

She left Cal Poly with a degree in agribusiness with a concentration in marketing in 2005 and began finding her path into the San Luis Obispo County community.

“We even had an art gallery that was a pop-up at the Z Villages office,” Carranza said. “People took tours and gave some suggested donations for taking a tour of the mural art concepts that we had displayed by the Artery.”

The Equality Mural Project must procure an Administrative Use Permit [AUP] from the city for all the buildings it puts murals on unless the building is privately owned. The permit allows public review of land use proposals that do not warrant a Planning Commission hearing but have a noticeable impact on the surrounding neighborhood.

“You have to have the business owner, the property owner, and the artist all on board,” Carranza said.

“And we finish that off with, before they [the artist] begin, and after the Admin Use Permit is approved, we

“Its a passion of mine because we all have to eat, so agriculture is never going away,” said Kramer, “There’s less and less people in agriculture and more and more people every day, so its something important where people need to realize where their food comes from.”

Kramer is a proud member of several agriculture organziations in the county, serving in leadership roles for many of them. She joined the San Luis Obispo County chapter of California Women for Agriculture, SLO County Cattlewomen’s Association, SLO County Farm Bureau, and the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance.

“I am very passionate about making sure that we still can farm here and that our industries do stay here,” said Kramer, “and that people learn that agriculture was here first and we need it to stay. We need to make sure our local politicians know that as well.”

Other organizations she has been a part of include the Paso Robles Pioneer Day Committee, San Luis Obispo County Ag Education Committee board, California Mid-State Fair Heritage Foundation member, Paso Robles High School Agriculture Department Advisory Committee, and Ag Finance Representative on the SLO County Agricultural Liaison Advisory Board.

There are also ramifications in place to ensure that what is painted on a building is a quality product. The Equality Mural Project also signs that they will help repair any damages done to the painting during that time.

The team’s next project will be the tunnel under Highway 101 that goes from Atascadero High School to the Sunken Gardens area. They’re hoping to start in October, and the mural will be taken over by a painter from Los Angeles due to the original artist, AHS teacher Clarke Andros, moving out of the area.

Paul Tognazzini, Cattleman of the Year San Luis Obispo County Cattlemen’s Association has named fourth-generation rancher Paul Tognazzini the 2022 Cattleman of the Year.

“I was pretty surprised,” Tognazzini said. “I felt there’s probably a lot more qualified individuals than myself. But I was also very honored, mostly because my dad was Cattleman of the Year several years ago, so that meant a lot to me.”

Tognazzini is one of those founding names known throughout the county.

Born in San Luis Obispo and raised on the family ranch near Cayucos, Paul is the son of Peter Tognazzini Sr. and Amelia Gianolini Tognazzini, and has three siblings, Peter Jr., Phil, and Pam. The Tognazzini and Gianolini family’s deep California agricultural roots date back to 1869 and 1890.

“I come from a long line of ranchers and dairymen,” Tognazzini said. “We settled in Cayucos in the 1800s and still own the same ranch and still own the same ranch my mom grew up on in the Los Osos Valley, and so I’ve pretty much had a lifetime of experience in the cattle industry.”

Tognazzini’s upbringing was much like any other ranch kid of the era — filled with driving

tractors and farm chores and showing livestock at the local fairs.

By 1972, Tognazzini earned a bachelor’s degree in ag business management from Cal Poly. During his college years, he purchased his first herd of 35 cows for $150 a head.

After graduation, Tognazzini began his banking career which spanned 22 years.

In 1985, Paul married his wife, Fran. The two have three children, Stephany, Brian, and Charlie, and three grandchildren, Chloe, Spencer, and Leo. He continues ranching with his son, Charlie, but also continued to give back to the community.

He served as a director on the Cancer Support Community Board, where he was honored with the “Founders Award.”

Tognazzini has been a 4-H beef leader, a Paso Robles Ag Tour Committee volunteer for 20 years, and he and his wife were recipients of the California Mid-State Fair “Blue Ribbon Award.” He has been an SLO County Cattlemen’s Association director for many years and serves today as treasurer.

When asked about the agriculture and the ranching lifestyle he enjoys most, Tognazzini says, “I like the people, of course, and I like to be outdoors and just the lifestyle. It’s pretty hard to beat.”

San Luis Obispo County Cattlemen’s Association has given the Cattleman of the Year award annually since 1963, making Tognazzini the 59th person to receive this honor.
