PASO ROBLES — After just over a year after breaking ground on the building, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast (CGCMCC) celebrated the grand opening of the Tom Maas Clubhouse in Paso Robles. Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin, City Councilman John Hamon, Clint Weirick, a representative from Senator John Laird’s office; Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce CEO Gina Fitzpatrick, and District 3 Supervisor Dawn OrtizLegg helped with the clubhouse ribbon cutting along with plenty of excited patrons and future club members. The current Paso Robles BGCMCC is located at the Flamson Middle School on Spring Street and will remain serving students there with goals to expand services to other schools in the area. they are currently in talks with Almond Acres Charter School and the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District to provide additional support. “We have proven programs
that are used nationwide that we can provide great outcomes with kids in many different communities,” said Boyer. “If we have the capability of doing that in Paso Robles, then we would love to do that.”
In 2016, it became evident to board members that they needed a larger facility due to a growing waiting list for children to get into the club. The half-acre lot, formerly home to the North County
Racquet Association, was donated by a long-time friend of the Boys & Girls Club, Tom Maas. Just before his unexpected passing in 2019, Maas and his wife Kathleen CONTINUED ON PAGE A15

classroom. To compensate for losing the classroom space for the TMS campus, the M-wing has an open space where trustees approved to construct a portable classroom. Trustees approved the Request for Proposal (RFP) to find the “best value” contractor. Foundation and site work will be included in the proposals, but the relocatable building will be purchased directly by the district. Additionally, trustees approved a salary update for the Templeton High School (THS) athletic trainer. After reviewing the athletic trainer salary schedule, staff determined the district is on the lower end of payment compared to other districts in the county. PASO ROBLES — Paso Robles celebrated their second annual Juneteenth Jubilee downtown at the Paso Robles City Park on Saturday, June 18. ing a movement to recognize the emancipation of slavery and celebrate the excellence of Black culture and freedom. “It was beautiful. Paso came through,” said Paso Robles native Netta Perkins who organized the event. Perkins said that they chose Jackie’s Place, which is a Blackowned catering company from San Jose who provided all the food. “We ran out of food, but that was a good thing. Next year we will be prepared to have way more food,” said Perkins.

Additionally, throughout the day was music and guest speakers. Paso Robles City Mayor Steve Martin was one of the speakers at the event, telling Paso Robles Press, “City staff supported the committee organizing the event. The event was successful and positive. I was pleased to attend and deliver the City Council’s Juneteenth presentation.” “We kept it traditional. This is what Juneteenth’s about, celebrating [being] free-ish and the food and the music,”
said Perkins, “Music always brings the world together. It was amazing.” Perkins, a born and raised Paso Roblan, said about 400 people came to the event, exceeding her original expectations. Paso Robles alumni and former residents came back to Paso for the celebration from as far as Sacramento and Los Angeles. “I felt like with all of them coming back—it was like they put their hands on us and said we’re here for you.
