PASO ROBLES — The City Council had difficulties coming to an agreement for a new airport lease policy and strategy during the Tuesday night meeting on May 2. Staff brought forward a new policy and lease agreement for the Paso Robles Municipal Airport after recent California State Law and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) policy changes.

Councilmembers disagreed on the increased lease rates and its effects on long-term lease agreements at the airport.

Councilman John Hamon recused himself from the agenda item due to a conflict of interest, leaving only four council members to vote. This led to several motions failing due to a tied vote.

The essential elements of the revisions are as follows:

In the case that existing lease agreements cannot be extended because their combined length would then exceed the 35-40 year limit per FAA guidance:

At expiration, with no development proposed, existing lessees may enter into a new short-term agreement (5 years);

At expiration, with commensurate capital investment, existing lessees may enter into a new long-term agreement.

Clarifications were made to the City’s obligatory reversionary rights. The basic premise of reversion being that at the conclusion of the lease term all improvements revert to the Airport and allow its further occupancy as an Airport-owned facility. Rental rates for any new lease agreement will consider

ECHO Hosts First Empty Bowls in Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES — The community came out in full force last weekend to support the El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO) in their first Empty Bowls

fundraiser in Paso Robles on Thursday, April 27. The event followed their 8th annual Empty Bowls in Atascadero on Thursday, April 20.

ECHO CEO and Executive Director Wendy Lewis said, “It was a beautiful day. The event was beautiful, and Austin [Solheim] was in charge of both [events] and did a great job organizing.”

Held at the nonprofit Studios on the Park on Pine Street, 150 people were in

attendance. After hosting a meal team for ECHO, Studios on the Park offered to work with ECHO to bring an Empty Bowls fundraiser to Paso Robles. The day was full of handmade bowls with their artists, soup, wine, and live music by Dawn Lambeth.

“Paso sold out, so we were excited for our first fundraising event in Paso to sell out and just have the community back us like they did was pretty heartwarming,” added Lewis.

With both events, ECHO was able to raise over $100,000 — the most in its history. Thanks to sponsors and other donations, the nonprofit is able to direct most of its raised funds to its services and operations. This is ECHO’s second year operating their campus in Paso Robles. Between both campuses, ECHO has permanently housed 56 individuals and families this year.

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Atascadero City Manager Rachelle Rickard was recognized for her service to the city during the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, May 2.

Rickard was recognized upon her retirement for 26 years of service to Atascadero. She will be officially retiring in July and the Atascadero City Council will be considering a hiring contract with new City Manager James Lewis, who previously served as city manager for Pismo Beach.

The Atascadero Loaves and Fishes (also known as ALF Food Pantry) will be receiving county funds for the restoration of their food pantry building. The nonprofit addresses food insecurity by providing groceries to low and very low-income residents of Atascadero, Templeton, Creston, Santa Margarita, and the California Valley. In 2022, they served 3,700 individuals with food covering 3-4 days of meals for each resident. The food pantry building suffered some damage from the Jan. 9 storm and is in need of repair and restoration.

PASO ROBLES — Antique vendors and pickers came out to the Paso Robles Event

Center for three days full of camaraderie and shopping last weekend. This April 28-30 show marked the first year of the Three Speckled Hens Antiques and Old Stuff Show under its new owner.

Fifteen years ago, friends Susi Fuller and Kathy Marquart started the Three

Speckled Hens show in Templeton after purchasing a little too many goods from another antique show in Washington state. In an effort to convince their husbands not to be upset with their abundant purchases, Marquart thought Templeton was a cute town with no antique show yet, “So

we said why not ... let’s do it.”

Four years later, the show landed at the Paso Robles Event Center to accommodate its now bi-annual status. Now, Marquart and Fuller are ready to retire and pass the show on to Kimber Black, the new owner, and founder of another

The $3,250 in county funds will be used to offset the expenses of repairing and restoring the building, including but not limited to wet/dry vacuum, building materials, drying equipment, excavation equipment, mastic sealer, and gravel.

Second Annual CERT SafetyFest

Introduces New Classes

The event is Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

PASO ROBLES — The City of Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services and North SLO County CERT presents the Second Annual SafetyFest, offering music, emergency and disaster training exercises, demonstrations and hands-on learning activities by First Responders and the area’s top safety professionals. The event is Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Building on the participation of the inaugural SafetyFest, which showcased more than 40 exhibitors and sponsors, 14 safety activities for kids, music, dancing, contests, and career opportunities, the 2023 event adds state-of-the-art earthquake, fire, flood, tsunami, emergency & disaster simulation, crime prevention, and safety training exercises.

“We’re excited to bring back the SafetyFest,” said Fire Captain/Paramedic John Pricket of Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services. “This year we are expanding our educational and training exercises for all aspects of fire prevention, emergency and disaster preparation and response,” he added.

Proceeds support the North San Luis Obispo Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a public beneficiary program (sponsored by Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services and funds managed by SLO County Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation) that educates volunteers about disaster prepared-

ness for the hazards that may impact our community and trains them in basic disaster response skills.

“This event helps our local CERT program expand our training classes and increase our base of volunteers trained to assist in an emergency,” said John Spooner Volunteer Program Manager of North SLO County CERT.

“This year, we plan to offer additional disaster preparedness training for the public. In addition to the 20 hour CERT Basic training classes we will offer Listos, an 8 hour disaster preparedness class that is taught in Spanish, and a class in disaster preparedness for pets. Winter storms this year increased the need for CERT response, so we are going to increase the number of qualified team members. This will require the purchase of additional equipment, more supplemental training classes, and an additional certified instructor,” he added.

SafetyFest exhibit spaces are available in the Park for $100. Nonprofit spaces are $50. Safety-related organizations and businesses are encouraged to submit an exhibitor application. Bilingual exhibitor entries are encouraged and supported. For exhibitor applications and sponsorship opportunities, visit: safetyfest.live or contact Mark Elterman at (805) 305-5584.

SafetyFest sponsors include City of Paso Robles, City of Paso Robles Fire Department & Emergency Services, City of Paso Robles Police Department, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation, North San Luis Obispo County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and PASOSafe™.

Templeton Olive Farm Wins ‘Best of Show Robust’ at Central Coast Olive Oil Competition

PASO ROBLES — The Central Coast Olive Oil Competition has released the results from the 2023 competition, which featured premier oils produced across California. Taking home the Best of Show awards were the following:

• Best of Show Robust: Olea Farm (Templeton)

• Best of Show Medium: Olivaia’s Ola (Lindsay)

• Best of Show Delicate: Colomba Bianca (Clements)

Best of Show Flavored: Calivirgin/Lodi Olive Oil

The 2023 Producer of the Year award will be announced shortly.

“The number of entries for this year’s competition was strong with 108 entries, despite a 2022-2023 harvest that was light, primarily due to weather conditions that limited bloom,” said Chief Judge Paul Vossen. “Now that the pandemic is kind-of over, it was refreshing to see a resurgence in activity compared to the last few years. We tweaked the entry classes somewhat to further emphasize the featured varietal oils as to their origin countries. Overall, there were eleven Best-of-Class oils selected out of the 18 different classes.”

“I am very proud of our judges who have many years of experience working on various certified taste panels and in the industry marketing olive oil,” Vossen continued. “Many are also olive growers and processors who know the specific characteristics of the varieties and they taste oils on a regular basis. They were all very discerning and diligent in their efforts to categorize these oils appropriately.”

All entries entered were also judged on their marketing efforts as part of the Central Coast Packaging and Design Competition:

• Best of Label — Single Bottle: Central Coast Olive Company

Best of Label — Series: Solana

Best of Packaging — Single Bottle: Balestrieri

Family Farm

Best of Packaging — Series of Bottles: La

Panza Ranch Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The California Mid-State Fair thanks Vossen and his cast of judges for another great competition: Roger Declercq, Maria Farr, John Hadley, Lawrence Jacobs, Arden Kremer, Nancy Lilly, Julie Menge, Olga Orlova, and Glenn Weddell. Atascadero City Council to Appoint New City Manager

Lewis comes to Atascadero after serving as Pismo Beach City Manager for 10 years

ATASCADERO — A new city manager is headed to Atascadero. The Atascadero City Council announced on Monday night that they will consider approving a contract with James R. Lewis for city manager at its May 9, regular council meeting. Once appointed, Lewis would take office on July 1, replacing retiring City Manager Rachelle Rickard, whose last day will be July 12, allowing for a time of preparation, familiarization, and transition.

Lewis will return to Atascadero, his current hometown, after having previously served the community

as its assistant city manager and economic development director for eight years, leaving in February 2013.

Lewis has served as city manager for the City of Pismo Beach for over 10 years where he has led the community through a decade of major capital projects including a new pier, plaza, Pismo Preserve, and the Shell Beach Streetscape, the implementation of public art and several placemaking investments, and he has positioned the city to be in its strongest ever financial condition. As Atascadero’s city manager, Lewis will serve as the city’s chief executive officer and will be responsible for enforcing city codes, ordinances and regulations, manage financial accountability, deliver major capital projects, facilitate

commercial development and ensure the efficient and economical delivery of city services.

Lewis said, “I am deeply honored and privileged for the opportunity to serve as the next city manager for Atascadero. This is my home, where we are raising our family, and I simply love this place! I am looking forward to working with the Atascadero community, council and staff to enhance and preserve Atascadero’s unique character and quality of life. I appreciate the confidence of the mayor and City Council and will work diligently to achieve the goals of the city.”

Mr. Lewis currently serves on the League of California Cities Board of Directors representing the City Managers of California and on the California City Management Foundation Board of Trustees. He is an

International City/County Management Association, Credentialed Manager. SLO Food Bank Supports CalFresh Awareness Month

CalFresh enrollment in SLO County has increased by 20 percent from February 2022 to February 2023

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

— CalFresh Awareness Month is just around the corner, and the SLO Food Bank is gearing up for a month-long campaign throughout May to raise awareness about this program.

The CalFresh Program, federally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is a nutrition assistance program that provides eligible individuals and families with monthly financial assistance to purchase healthy food at grocery stores and some farmers’ markets. SLO Food Bank honors this month by promoting CalFresh in debunking myths through

social channels and hosting enrollment assistance sites across the county.

In San Luis Obispo County, the SLO Food Bank, along with the CalFresh Alliance and other stakeholders like the SLO County Departments of Public Health and Social Services as well as

the University of California Cooperative Extension, have been working hard to increase CalFresh enrollment rates, and their efforts are paying off. Currently, CalFresh is utilized by 23,720 people to buy healthy and nutritious food in San Luis Obispo County. According to the CDSS CalFresh Data Dashboard Monthly Participation, CalFresh enrollment in SLO County has increased by 20 percent from February 2022 to February 2023. The SLO Food Bank is proud to be part of the effort to provide nutritious food to those who need it most.

“The SLO Food Bank is steadfast in our role as a strong advocate and partner for maximizing local participation in CalFresh. Greater participation in CalFresh is a win-win for our community: this program provides vital funding to help alleviate hunger and it brings designated federal funds to local businesses,” said SLO Food Bank CEO Garret Olson. “CalFresh Awareness

Month is an important opportunity to educate, encourage, and support all who face food insecurity to receive the help they need and deserve. It’s difficult to thrive on an empty stomach.”

To further increase CalFresh enrollment and close out CalFresh Awareness Month, the SLO Food Bank has organized application assistance sites across the county in conjunction with Hunger Awareness Day on June 2. At these sites, individuals will receive one-on-one assistance in applying for CalFresh benefits with the help of local hunger heroes from the Department of Social Services and SLO Food Bank volunteers. The assistance sites will be held at the Atascadero Public Library, Morro Bay Public Library, SLO Public Library, Nipomo Public Library, and Arroyo Grande Public Library. No appointment is necessary, and individuals can drop in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., except for the Arroyo Grande Public Library, which will be open from

1 to 5 p.m.

To start the application process, individuals must provide a form of identification, proof of income, and social security or legal resident identification. The immigration status of any person applying for CalFresh is confidential and is only used to determine eligibility for benefits in their household.

“We want to make it easier for clients to apply for CalFresh and eliminate any barriers they may face, like access to a computer or a scanner,” said Venessa Rodriguez, CalFresh Outreach Manager. “Our amazing hunger heroes are here to help answer any questions about CalFresh and make sure neighbors are getting the support they need.”

For more information on CalFresh and how to apply, visit GetCalFresh. org/s/slofoodbank or call 1 (877) 847-3663. Let’s work together to ensure that everyone in San Luis Obispo County has access to healthy, nutritious food.

Iconic Grover Beach Farm Stand Opens After Rain Delays Strawberry Harvest

Okui Strawberry and Fruit Stand, the only one left in town, overcomes rain delays for latest opening ever

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

— A line of cars off Highland Way in Grover Beach signaled the opening of Okui Strawberry and Fruit Stand last Thursday. Farmer and longtime Farm Bureau member Charles Okui says they typically begin harvesting strawberries in January, but this year’s wet weather delayed picking until April.

This crop of Albion variety straw-

berries was planted at the end of October and could continue bearing fruit until the fall. Okui says besides the loss of sales from delayed harvest, the increasing cost of labor (now around $18.50 an hour) will make 2023 especially challenging.

“This year, we’re just hoping to break even,” he said.

Okui’s grandfather Charlie Sakamoto started growing berries on the five-acre farm next to the stand in 1948. Charles and his sister Joan Okui are the third generation of Japanese-American farmers to manage the farm. San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau helped facilitate a visit of Okui Farms on Thursday for

Grover Beach city leaders.

Okui Farms is the only commercial agricultural production remaining within the city limits of Grover Beach.

“This farm is a fixture of our community,” City Manager Matt Bronson said. “We’re proud it’s here.”

Okui says the strawberries they sell at the farm stand are sweeter than those you typically find at the grocery store because they don’t have to be shipped, allowing them to be left on the vine for a few extra days. Okui Strawberry and Fruit Stand is now open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 1234 Highland Drive in Grover Beach.

Weed Abatement Reminder: Wildfire Preparedness Day is May 6 Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services would like the community to focus on steps residents can take to help their homes survive wildfires.

“The threat of wildfire is becoming increasingly prevalent and dangerous in California, posing greater risks to people and property than ever before,” said John Prickett. “In preparation for a future with more wildfire activity, residents need to understand their role and actively take part in reducing wildfire risk. We encourage people to use and share NFPA’s wildfire safety resources with others in their neighborhood, on Preparedness Day and all through the year.”

Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services would like to remind residents and property owners about the city’s weed abatement program. With the heavy rains this year, it is especially important that property owners reduce combustible vegetation as soon as possible. Please clear all combustible vegetation, including dead leaves, weeds, brush, and tree limbs no later than May 15. Property owners should also remove excess trash, wood, and other combustibles away from their homes.

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Special Election

Dear Editor,

Thank you to everyone in our community who voted for me in the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Special Election. I am sincerely grateful to all of the individuals who supported my campaign through volunteering, donating, providing encouragement or contributing in any other way over the last several months. While the election results did not provide the outcome I had hoped, I have wished Mr. Enney well and offered any guidance I can provide during his term.

I hope you have been inspired in a positive way and that you too will continue to be involved in our community. Convicted Felon Arrested on Multiple Firearm Charges in Atascadero

On April 14, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office made a significant bust that resulted in the arrest of a convicted felon on multiple charges, including possession of illegal firearms and impersonating a police officer.

During a routine traffic stop at the intersection of El Camino Real

and Montecito Avenue, deputies identified the driver of the vehicle as 37-year-old Andre Brown. Upon further investigation, they discovered an active arrest warrant for impersonating a police officer and a semi-automatic handgun in Brown’s waistband.

The handgun did not have a serial number, classifying it as a “ghost gun,” and deputies also found additional firearm magazines in the vehicle. Brown’s status as a convicted felon prohibited him from owning or possessing firearms and ammunition, leading to his immediate arrest and detention at County Jail.

As the investigation continued, detectives uncovered information indicating that Brown had more weapons in his possession. A search warrant was issued, and on April 25, detectives from the Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit served the warrant at Brown’s residence in the 9300 block of Rivera Lane in Atascadero. During the search, detectives found additional weapons, leading to further charges against Brown. He now faces four counts of a felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, and possession of a silencer.

The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information regarding this case to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.

Mosquito Season is Here

Spring is here, with warmer weather. And with the recent storm events and potential for standing water, mosquitoes have also arrived.

It is important for everyone to take steps to help eliminate the breeding places for mosquitos in and around all residences and workplaces and to reduce mosquito-borne health risks. Some helpful tips to reduce these hazards include:

Eliminate locations for mosquitoes to lay their eggs by removing standing water sources from around your property. Routinely remove standing water from items such as decorative ponds, bird baths, fountains, flower pots, pet bowls, animal troughs, clogged rain gutters, swimming pool covers,

Letters to the Editor

our students need strong voices in the community and their education will dictate the future of our community. I encourage you to talk to your friends about the direction of schools and get them involved too.

In the meantime, I will remain an advocate for students, families, and teachers. Thank you again for showing me so much support during this campaign. Please stay tuned.

Division in the School System

Dear Editor,

So many in Paso Robles seem intent on focusing on division within our school system. Many focus on the division of school board candidates and the rights and wrongs of approved textbooks, but when do we value and focus on the unity within our schools? As a student, I have watched Paso Robles High School succeed in multiple areas that genuinely define the generation of Paso Robles citizens. Recently, 50 plus students attended the SkillsUSA State Competition, during which 19 Bearcats medaled in Career Technical Education competitions.

Furthermore, Bearcat athletics have continued to thrive with the 1999 Boys Swim Record in the 50 freestyle

event being broken by Conner Rocha. Also, the pole vault school record was broken by junior Peyton Bedrosian, and we’ve also seen high performance seasons with other sports like Stunt and Track and Field. It is without saying that there are numerous accomplishments taking place within the walls of the High School, it is up to the community to recognize them and celebrate the unity in future generations.

A Response to “Please exercise your right to vote

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter as a response to the article (¨Please exercise your right to vote … April 13).

As a senior at Paso Robles High School, I have witnessed much during my time in Paso schools. It has been stated many times that our Math and English test levels are below state-level requirements. I can agree that many students are not putting effort when it comes to state testing. Many students lose patience and rush through the questions. This could be the lack of help they receive in our overcrowded classroom. Students need more one-on-one help in order to succeed and understand the mate-

discarded tires, buckets, barrels, cans, etc. Even small containers with standing water can provide a breeding habitat for mosquitoes.

Use mosquito dunks and other pest control/abatement products which can be purchased at most local nursery and hardware supply stores.

To avoid being bitten, consider staying indoors between dusk and dawn, which is peak mosquito biting time. Avoid activities and places where mosquitoes are plentiful. Apply insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET when you’re outdoors. Wear long-sleeved clothes, pants, and socks. Clothing can also be treated with repellants containing DEET. Take steps to ensure that all windows and doors have screens; do not leave doors open for extended periods of time.

rial given. This isn’t possible with 30 plus students in a classroom all trying to grasp the teacher’s attention. I myself have struggled with finding time outside the classroom to meet up with the teacher because we have two completely different schedules. With this being said, students need to be placed in less congested classrooms to learn to grow.

A Response to “Protect Your Pets During Emergencies”

Dear Editor,

As a dog owner, I know it is expensive to take them to the veterinary. Our dogs are part of our family and we care about them as much as we do for other family members, but we rarely think about what we would do if there is an emergency. The article “Protect your pets during emergencies” suggests that by getting lessons about what to do in emergencies we could save their lives. Natural disasters can happen and it can be when we least expect it. We never know how bad it could turn out to be and it is better to be prepared. The lack of preparation when Hurricane Katrina happened resulted in 70,000 and 150,000 pet deaths. We would not like to lose our best friend, they

unfortunately can not take care of themselves. It is our responsibility to look out for them. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of proper pet care.

High School Response to SLO County Teacher Arrest

Dear Editor,

I am writing in regard to the story about the SLO county teacher who was arrested for alleged child abuse. I hope we get more detailed information on the story, as I believe no teacher would do this unprovoked. I have a hard time believing that a hairbrush could be taken so ferociously that it would bruise someone’s hand. I find it hard to believe that the teacher could throw papers that magically cut a student’s forehead. As a high school student, I know that teens can be extremely disrespectful these days. feel for the teacher when it comes to a situation like this and I have seen students threaten teachers with no repercussions. I believe an innocent teacher may be getting falsely accused in this case, and look forward to learning more.

Existing reversionary language will be honored upon expiration with any subsequent lease agreements including updated language.

In accordance with FAA orders and guidelines, rental rates for leases on non-aeronautical sites will be based on Fair Market Value and rental rates for aeronautical sites based on fair and reasonable value as established for the site. FAA guidelines and periodic market analysis are the method in which market rates are determined.

Additionally, the airport commission revised the lease

agreement to reflect recent FAA guidance as follows:

In addition to the yearly Consumer Price Index (CPI) adjustments, rent adjustments can be made every five years by representative appraisal. Increases are capped at 20 percent over a five year period.

A new monthly Base Rent shall be determined by representative appraisal at the expiration of the initial lease term and as a condition to exercise any renewal options.

An additional event of default is established to address the failure to complete proposed development within the agreed upon timeframe.

to approve the new lease agreement and policy as is, but with staff bringing the agreement back to the council for review.

The motion was seconded by Councilmember Fred Strong and approved with a 3-1 vote, with Mayor Steve Martin voting no.

Several proclamations were made at the start of the meeting. Martin proclaimed May 7-13 as Public Service Recognition Week, the entire month of May as National Foster Care Month, and the week of May 7-13 and the entire month of May as National Travel and Tourism Week and California Tourism Month.

repair work at 36 locations in the county. Through this year’s March storms, staff has identified 595 locations: 287 roads requiring debris clearing, 109 locations requiring emergency repairs, and 199 locations that will need permanent repairs. Staff noted they have accumulated close to 10,000 photos of damages on sites throughout the county.

Much of the storm damage included destroyed bridges, washouts of roads, broken culverts, undercutting of roads, and embankment failures. This led to an estimated 400 isolated resi-

dents during storm emergencies. Staff reports that as of Apr. 17, there were still over 100 isolated residents resulting from damaged infrastructure on Chimney Rock Road, Upper Lopez Canyon Road, and Santa Rita Road.

The estimated cost to repair the damages is $36 million. This is before reimbursements from FEMA which could reimburse 75 percent of the total cost with an additional 18.25 percent from the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES). However, the amount reimbursed will vary on the date of work completed. One hundred percent reimbursement is

expected for work completed within 270 days, and 88.53 percent reimbursement is expected after.

Areas needing permanent repair work is anticipated to continue through at least 2026. Staff proposed a Storm Damage Recovery Team made of six positions and described as “repurposed positions already existing in Public Works and some limited-term (three-year) positions.”

The SLO County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the funding plan and storm damages report.

The next San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled for May 16 at 9 a.m.

beloved show, Cowgirl Christmas: A Country Christmas Boutique Show.

“It’s changing, the people are changing, we are getting older and we needed some fresh new blood ideas to carry this show on further, and she [Black] was perfect,” said Marquart of the decision to retire and hand the show over to someone new.

It was thanks to Andy Morris of radio station KJUG that brought Black to Marquart and Fuller. A mutual friend of both shows, Morris let Black know the “original hens” were ready to retire. As the women said, “the rest was history.”

The COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges for the antique show, forcing them to shut down for two years, cancelling four shows. But Black has hopes to bring the show back to its original glory.

“It’s an honor and a responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I want to restore it to what they built it. I want to build it back for them,” said Black of her new ownership.

Black, a Central Coast native, has operated her own show for 20 years. Now living in Texas full time, she comes back home to visit family and

“I have a personal goal of growing this back so that I have something to come back [to] and see my own family.

Now I am part of their [Marquart and Fuller’s] family,” says Black.

This April show was Black’s first with Three Speckled Hens under her name. Keeping with tradition, she asked Jack’s Helping Hand to come back a partnered nonprofit.

Jack’s Helping Hand was founded by Paul and Bridget Ready in memory of their son Jack, whose three-year struggle with a rare form of brain cancer ended in 2004. Black happens to also be a relative of the Readys, whose mission is to provide community programs that meet the unique challenges of children with cancer or special needs under the age of 21. A portion of the proceeds of every show goes towards Jack’s Helping Hand.

“We get to have a booth as well as a portion of the proceeds of door sales ... it’s been a nice partnership. It has been easy and nice working with Kimber,” said Jack’s Helping Hand’s Event and Volunteer Coordinator Riley Sherlock.

Friday night started with the Feathered Frenzy show, which ushered in early birds with free food and drinks

Marquart and Fuller, who was in Florence, Italy, during the April show, provided Black with boxes of files and information on the show in preparation for the ownership turnover.

“We knew she was capable, but this is our baby, our creation, so we wanted her to know this is why and how we did it. Now you [Black] can do it and take it to the next level,” said Marquart.

Marquart is looking forward to using her retirement to spend time helping her son with their ranch and grandchildren. But she and Susi will remain as support and cheerleader for Black and Three Speckled Hens.

“I see it going back to what it used to be before COVID shut them down for four shows,” said Black about the future of the show. “I look forward to that day, and they are right there with me. They have supported me.” Black plans to keep Three Speckled Hens true to its antique roots. Three Speckled Hens will be back for their Fall show this September. NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, cashier’s check payable at the time of sale in lawful money of the United States (payable to Attorney Lender Services, Inc.) will be held by the duly appointed Trustee as shown below, of all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described below. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust, with interest and late charges thereon, as provided in the note(s), advances, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, interest thereon, fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee for the total amount (at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale) reasonably estimated to be set forth below. The amount may be greater on the day of sale. Trustor: JOSE ANGEL RODRIGUEZ

exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. NOTICE TO

POTENTIAL BIDDERS:

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. If the sale occurs after 1/1/2021, the sale may not be final until either 15 or 45 days after the sale date - see Notice to Tenant. Further, no TDUS can be issued until the sale is final. Your bid is subject to being over bid by the Tenant or “eligible bidder” after the sale and if your bid is over bid, your only remedy is to the refund of your actual bid amount without interest or payment of any other costs, expenses or funds of any kind or nature incurred by the initial successor bidder. NOTICE

to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916) 9390772, or visit this internet website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 22-0222 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, this week’s recipe for meatballs in chipotle sauce is simple to prepare, cooked in a slow cooker, and loaded with flavor.

Albondigas en Salsa Chipotle (Meatballs in Chipotle Sauce)

Ingredients:

• 3/4 pound ground pork

• 3/4 pound ground beef

2 large eggs, beaten

1/4 cup fresh bread crumbs

2 cloves garlic

1 teaspoon kosher salt

2 sprigs fresh cilantro, finely chopped Caldo de Res (beef broth), as needed Chipotle Salsa

Ingredients:

• 8 Roma tomatoes (about 2 pounds total)

2 large cloves garlic, peeled

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 (7-ounce) can chipotles in adobo

• 1 tablespoon whole dried

Mexican oregano

• 1 cup water or Caldo de Res (beef broth)

2 tablespoons fresh lard or vegetable oil

Garnish for serving:

Diced Hass avocado

• Crumbled chicharrón (deep fried pork skin)

Directions:

In a large bowl, thoroughly mix the pork, beef, and eggs with your hands. In a food processor, combine the bread crumbs, garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, and cilantro and pulse until combined. Add to the meat mixture and stir to combine. Divide the meat mixture into 12 or 24 equal portions, roll into balls, and chill for 30 minutes while you make the salsa. To make the salsa, line a

A Crash Landing

It’s been my observation that real horsemen who know how to ride also know how to fall. This is a true story of one who didn’t.

I used to work ring at a lot of horse sales: Quarter horses, Thoroughbreds, Arabs, Paints, Appaloosas, fast horses, slow horses, warmbloods and horses that were not so hot. It was always exciting to sell a multi-million dollar race horse or an $18,000 mule. I also remember the low-lights, like the consignment sale back in the 1970s when only 10 percent of the horses sold because the consignors thought too highly of their horses. There is one episode that stands out above all the rest.

At Quarter Horse sales it has been a tradition that the consignor would ride the horse into the ring and spin him around so fast that everyone

sitting in the front row ended up with a pile of wood chips and the byproduct of digestion in their lap. At the auctioneer’s coaxing the rider would then dismount and remove the saddle so that everyone could see the horse’s back. At every sale there was a very young kid piloting the horse to show how gentle the horse was and there’d also be at least one knucklehead who, when asked to dismount by the auctioneer, would instead stand up in the saddle and twirl his rope. I’ve also seen them crack a whip and one numbskull even fired off a blank round that made the pavilion shake, but the horse slept right through it. Later the new owner discovered that his newly acquired horse was deaf and dumb.

Standing up on the saddle was the rider’s moment in the sun; his 15 seconds of fame, so to speak. I’m using the masculine instead of feminine here because I’ve never seen a female perform such ridiculous antics. Or, I should say, attempt to. I’ve witnessed a few disasters when the horse either moved a little, or in one case left the building entirely with great urgency after the consignor lit a

cherry bomb which he’d obviously not rehearsed with his horse prior to the sale.

The worst crash landing I ever saw occurred in front of 2,000 hushed spectators when the horse in the ring backed up a half-a-step causing the rider to fall with great velocity right on top the saddle horn. I swear you could hear the thump two counties away. The rider didn’t really fall off the horse as much as he melted off it, with his only padding being the handkerchief in his back pocket. The crowd let out a collective “ooow” as the rider alternated between being beet red from embarrassment and “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” to quote the song. As the rope he’d been twirling fell down around his shoulders the embarrassed rider hunkered down on one knee trying to resume normal breathing, suffering terribly from what we can only politely describe as “a groin injury.” It’s a feeling only a man can explain but really, there are no words in the English language to adequately describe the extent of the poor man’s suffering.

Meanwhile, the bidding on the horse stopped cold and the

April is Upon Us

This is the season of the Resurrection. Resurrection proves the divinity of Christ. If He were not God, He would still be dead. I have had the pleasure of going to Jerusalem, and the tomb of Jesus is empty. Who really took the life of Jesus? Was it the Jews? Was it the Romans? No, it was neither. It was impossible that anyone could take His life. Instead, He voluntarily laid it down. This was the greatest sacrifice to humanity by a loving God. The story of the Resurrection is filled with drama (three days of wondering if He

would actually come back to life), intrigue (what would Pilate do?), betrayal (by both Judas and Peter), forgiveness (of both the thief on the cross and Peter), and love (“Son, behold thy mother; mother, behold thy son”). Lost humanity tried everything to cancel and discredit Jesus. They wanted Him dead. But death would not and could not arrive until it was His time. His work had to be complete. As they brought Him before an unjust kangaroo court, they had Him convicted before He was tried. He was whipped within inches of His life. Flesh was ripped from His body until He was unrecognizable. They took huge handfuls of hair and ripped it from His beard by the root, and spit on Him, yet they wanted Him alive a bit longer. As He hung on

heavy skillet with aluminum foil and set over high heat. Add the tomatoes to the skillet and char on all sides, turning as little as possible, until blackened and soft. place the tomatoes in a blender with the garlic, cumin chipotles, oregano and water (or broth). Puree until completely smooth, about 1 minute. For a smoother texture, you can pass the sauce through a finemesh sieve or food mill, if you like.

In a saucepan, heat the lard or vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the salsa and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Place the meatballs in the bottom of the slow cooker. Pour the salsa over, cover, and cook for 3 1/2 hours on low.

Divide the meatballs among 6 large bowls. Thin the sauce, if necessary, with a little broth and spoon over the meatballs. Garnish with the diced avocado and crumble a few pieces of chicharrón over each bowl. Serves 6

Note: Serve with rice and warm tortillas.

auctioneer gaveled down the horse for two-thirds of its real value to a rancher friend of mine. As the auctioneer tried to coax the rider out of the ring so we could resume our business the rider walked what we would call “a little daintily.” A bystander carried his saddle out for him in an act of compassion.

A couple years later, I ran into my rancher friend who purchased that horse, and I asked him whatever happened to the rider. “He quit training horses after that,” my friend replied, “and who can blame him? I hear he still walks a little funny, hasn’t sired any offspring, he went from singing bass to soprano in the church choir but there is one bit of good news: he’s no longer cross-eyed. But that horse I bought from him sure turned out to be a dandy. Initially, I bought him to add to the remuda but when I saw what a great horse he was I saved him for my own personal use. Whenever I call out that horse’s name, it reminds me of that sale. We call him Thud.”

the Cross, they gave Him vinegar and gall to numb a little of the pain, yet He would not drink it. They made mockery of Him and attempted to shame Him before the world. These were the same people who had hailed Him as King one week and said, “Crucify Him” the next. As they pounded three nails into His hands and feet, it signified the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Those nails took care of the past, the present, and the future. The Cross reminds us that before we can truly settle a horizontal relationship with people, we need to establish a vertical relationship with God.

Hatred hung Him on the Cross, but love kept Him there.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on

Him shall not perish, but shall have everlasting life (John 3:16). The Cross was the instrument with which the Father used to get mankind back to Him.

To this day, His hands are still outstretched. It was on Golgotha that Jesus died, then placed in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. They borrowed a tomb because He was only going to use it for the weekend!

To you who are reading this: don’t look for the religious God. Look for the redemptive God. The God who is no longer on the Cross, but the God who sits at the right hand of the Father. The God who purchased a place for you in Heaven.

Atascadero High Swimming: No Pool? No Problem

Despite a number of hardships this season, boys and girls teams both capture Ocean League championships

ATASCADERO — Atascadero High School’s (AHS) swim teams have a lot to celebrate. Not only did the JV swim team win the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) Ocean League Championships on Wednesday, April 26, both the varsity girls and the boys swim teams became league champions at Pioneer Valley High School on April 27. Atascadero News interviewed AHS head coach Alyx Truax about this year’s swim season and the week of big wins.

Atascadero News: What was it like to become the CCAA Ocean League Champions?

Truax: In my 17 years coaching at AHS, this might be the most satisfying of all. Not only because we won championships, but because this was probably the most challenging season ever. When you figure not having our own pool, no home meets, transportation issues, atmospheric rivers, and all that — it was crazy. But the kids persevered and worked hard, and it paid off. Keeping up with their school work, late dinners, you name it. They showed a lot of grit — in the best possible sense. An added bonus was the kids really bonded during all those bus rides. They’re a tight-knit group of friends who encouraged each other to work hard and be their best.

AN: Both the boys and girls teams won. What went into making that happen?

Truax: Three things jump to mind. First, the hard work by the swimmers in the pool. Add to that the mental toughness it took for the kids to gut it out with all the stuff outside the pool.

Volunteer coach Shawn Tucker’s contribution was huge. His knowledge of swimming and competition was key. He also ran practices and was a vocal leader at the meets. Shawn’s energy is seemingly endless, and the swimmers all picked up on it.

Another factor that helped: We brought up several swimmers from the JV team — who also were league champions, by the way. Coach David Strybel did a great job of quickly molding inexperienced swimmers into varsity swimmers, all of whom made key contributions on relays and in individual events.

AN: Can you tell me about what kind of training goes into preparing for Ocean League?

Truax: It starts about two weeks prior. Coach Shawn always says “little things count.” So we focus heavily on stroke technique, starts, turns, and finishes. The work on finishes really paid off at the meet. Katie Strohl won the 50 free by hundredths of a second. Talk about exciting! We always tell the kids to go hard into the wall. Katie hit the wall so hard she hyper-extended her elbow. But she got the win and a best time! Then she got right back in and won the 100 fly.

AN: I know the AHS doesn’t have a pool right now and that you’ve been practicing at Sinsheimer Pool in San Luis Obispo, so how do these wins make putting in that extra effort feel?

Truax: Again, it feels great. I look back and just shake my head at what we accomplished in the face of all the obstacles. And we are extremely grateful to the folks at the SLO pool. They were the best hosts we could ask for.

AN: What has it been like to not have a home pool this season?

Truax: Well, I’ve touched on the challenges already, but my workload at least doubled because of not having a pool. Coordinating transportation luckily with a lot of help from parents, dealing with other coaches at the away meets. At times it was maddening.

That said, we look forward to having our own pool next season. We only graduate a handful of seniors this year, so we should be a real force going forward. The future of Greyhound swimming is very promising.

AN: What has the 2023 swim season been like overall?

Truax: Overall it was satisfying. Along the way, though, there were many obstacles and frustrations.

AN: Are there any shoutouts you’d like to give?

Truax: I have to mention the contributions made by the parents this year. They deserve

ATASCADERO

a lot of credit for our success. From driving carpools to sponsoring the pre-meet meals –— the parents stepped up and were a huge help to the coaches and the swimmers. Congratulations to the AHS swim teams and coaches Truax and David Strybel on their accomplishments.
