Solvang puts the Trot before the turkey on 12th annual run City's rec department holds fun run on Thanksgiving morning for first time

A

fter 11 years of holding its annual Turkey Trot, the Solvang Recreation Department decided to schedule the non-competitive 5K on Thanksgiving morning for its 12th annual running of the event on Nov. 23. According to the organizers, it turned out to be a good decision. "Since we started this, we always held it on the day after Thanksgiving, to give people a chance to burn off their big meal," said Fred Lageman of Solvang Parks and Rec. "This year, we decided to have people do it ahead of time, and it seems like the turnout has been much bigger in the past. I think we had 98 people signed up going into this morning, and with the walk-ups, I'm expecting about 125." Last week, Parks and Rec employee Elisa Monroy said that the final count of runners was 146, 52 of whom registered that morning. The run was held at Sunny Fields Park in Solvang, with the participants taking nine laps

around the large grass field (totaling 5 kilometers) and dropping a penny into a bucket placed at the start/finish line to keep track. All to a pounding soundtrack as Lageman kept playing classic rock tunes to keep the runners motivated.

In keeping with the non-competitive nature of the run, there was no time kept and no winners declared, although runners got a medal for finishing. In keeping with the easy-going nature of the event, while many had the usual running gear on,

there were some who decided to dress up a little bit for the holiday including two who ran (or walked) in turkey costumes. One of those two was Nathan Stoll, from the Bay Area, who had a bodysuit with all the turkey CONTINUED ON PAGE 20
