Steady Stream at Voter Service Centers
Local ballots tabulated Tuesday night; Presidential election undecided as of Wednesday NORTH COUNTY — Voter Service Centers in the North County saw a steady stream of people over the General Election’s final four days. The majority dropped off their ballots instead of going inside and voting. San Luis Obispo County released a series of election summary reports on Election Day, Nov. 3, the first coming shortly after the Centers closed at 8 p.m. The initial report included more than 100,000 vote-by-mail ballots. Over the course of Tuesday evening, reports came hourly,

AUSD, SLO Public Health Add To Reopening Plan By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Unified School District Board discussed Tuesday the first phase of reopening schools, which began Monday, and details added to the reopening plan for secondary schools in January. AUSD Superintendent Tom Butler noted near the start of the meeting that the parent surveys for kids in grades 6-12 went out on Monday, Nov. 2, and will be active till next Monday, Nov. 9. The survey allows parents to choose between three different options for their children, full distance learning, the hybrid model that will include in-person instruction, and the option for independent studies. Board President Donn Clickard was back in action on Tuesday after spending the last few meetings at home recovering from a medical procedure. with the last coming at 11:13 p.m. — this report showed that 100 percent of the precincts had been counted and the unofficial winners in each race were bolded. “Election Day went well and was light,” said SLO County Clerk-Recorder Tommy Gong, adding that the counting was ongoing. He expected to have an estimate on how many ballots were remaining by the end of Wednesday. While the majority of the SLO County races have mostly been decided, the same can’t be said for the Presidential election, adding to what has already been a challenging 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of publication, the election between President Donald

THE FASTEST FAMILY
Doug Gordon and Family are National Champions PASO ROBLES — It has been a tough year and one of the worst for most people around the globe. A deadly virus, school shutdowns, business closures, and social restrictions have impacted many people. Still, among all that, there is one family in Paso Robles, making the most of a difficult situation and perhaps having one of the best years of their lives. The Gordon family is a family of drag racers. This year, their dreams came true as Doug Gordon officially brought home the family’s first NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car National Championship in the Lucas Oil Series this past weekend. Drag racing runs through the veins of everyone in the Gordon family. It’s been passed down for generations and will continue with the next as Doug’s daughters, Templeton High School students Maddi and Maci Gordon, have already caught the bug and enthusiastically spend their weekends with grease up to their elbows working on their dad’s car if they aren’t racing themselves. “My dad started racing the car

and driving the car; he owns the car, I just get to drive it now,” Doug told The Atascadero News. “He owned it and drove it for a few years, and I was like the kids working on the car when I was growing up. Then from the mid-’80s till the early ‘90s, when I was 18, the economy had kind of taken a downturn, and we weren’t sure if we were going to keep racing, and they decided to give me a shot at driving before we quit. That was in 1993, I got my license then, and here we are in 2020.” Racing has always been a family outing disguised as a competition for the tight-knit family. Doug’s

father Mike is part of the racing team, and this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his daughters joined him on the road as well. For the past five years, Maddi and Maci have been racing while also competing in high school sports and handling their school work. Each has their own cars and have spent the last few years dominating the Division 7 NHRA Junior Dragster League. They have four championships between the two girls, and with a little better luck, they could have as many as six. Maci, the youngest who is a freshman at Templeton High

School, won her age group in 2015, 2017, and 2019 and hopes to bounce back in 2021 since odd years appear to be her time to shine. Maddi, a junior, won in 2016 and nearly stood in the winner circle in 2018 and 2019, losing just by a few points due to car troubles. This year began like any other year for the Gordon family, but things started to change when the pandemic hit in March. As all the county school districts made it clear that distance learning would open the 2020-2021 school year, the family realized an opportunity in front of them. Over the years, Maddi and Maci would each get to attend a handful of their father’s races, depending on travel and schedules. This year, with no obligations except for a webcam on their laptop, Maddi and Maci traveled to every race and soaked up every ounce of information available to them. “Last year, we would just take out the spark plugs after each round, take off the valve covers, drain the puke tank in the back, you know, just little things,” Maci said. “It was still really fun to us, but this year we
Trump and Joe Biden was still undecided as votes were being counted in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. California was called early and, as expected, went to Democratic Presidential candidate Biden. Sixteen-year-old Ella Mitchell was excited to be working at the Voter Service Center inside the Frontier Building of Paso Robles Event Center. “It’s a good experience and a great way for me to learn how it works,” said Mitchell, who attends Paso Robles High School.

AUSD Students Return To In-Person Learning ATASCADERO — For the first time in the 2020-2021 school year, the classrooms and halls of Atascadero’s public elementary schools were filled with the previously familiar echoing of children’s laughter and occasional weeping. Parents that signed up for in-person education, under the hybrid model, in the Atascadero School District dropped their children off this morning, Nov. 2. On July 29, San Luis Obispo County Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein alerted local districts that they could begin applying for the elementary school waiver that allows for in-person instruction to be provided to students in fifth grade and lower. Waivers were issued based on the most current scientific data and a review of local epidemiological data, in consultation with the California Department of Public Health, along with other public health considerations. During a Sept. 15 School Board meeting, the Atascadero Unified School District announced it would be applying for the elementary waiver. The return looked a little different for families depending on the school their child currently attends, with some returning for in-person education Monday morning, Nov. 2, and others opting for an afternoon return. The decision on mornings or afternoons was left up to the individual schools that factored in several different variables. “It [scheduling] was based on a couple of different factors. One is the results of the survey. I wanted to displace as few families’ schedules as possible,” San Gabriel Elementary School Principal Shauna Ames said. “We still have to change some, but the majority of our distance-learning students were morning and wanted to stay distance learning. The second reason is cleaning. We can use aids and other classified staff to help our custodians clean, but if you have it in the afternoon, everyone goes home, and we can really clean...The third reason was the temperature. We are going to be keeping doors and windows open, and we don’t want our kids to be freezing since it is pretty cold in the mornings.”

Project Homekey Funding to Bring Homeless Shelter to Paso Robles HASLO, PSHH, ECHO collaborating to renovate purchase, renovate Motel 6 By BRIAN WILLIAMS PASO ROBLES — Paso Robles could have a homeless shelter by December or sooner. Realistically, the long-awaited resource could open not long after the sale of the Motel 6 in Paso Robles is final, sometime in the first half of November. The Motel 6 on Black Oak Drive will be converted to provide over 100 rooms of emergency housing for homeless and low-income housing after the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo was awarded $15 million from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Project Homekey. HASLO, El Camino Homeless Organization of Atascadero and Peoples’ Self-Help Housing are collaborating on the project that will see $12.4 million go to purchasing the motel. Roughly $1 million will be used for renovations and the remainder will support the combined facilities for the next two years, said PSHH CEO Ken Trigueiro. “We are very excited about this project,” Trigueiro said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We certainly believe it will help.” ECHO will lease 50 of the motel’s 122 rooms for emergency homeless housing and form the First Step Center. “It’s a big miracle,” said ECHO CEO Wendy Lewis. “It is going to make a differ-
ence in peoples’ lives.” ECHO operates a safe and secure overnight 50-bed homeless shelter in Atascadero. Clients are provided case management services to secure a job and find permanent and sustainable housing. While enrolled in the program, clients are taught life skills for employment, budgeting, health care management and social interaction. “The motel is in really good shape,” Lewis said. “We will duplicate a lot of what we do in Atascadero.” Sixty-three of the rooms will be for low-income housing once kitchenettes are added. HASLO and PSHH will operate the yet-to-be-named permanent housing project. The nine remaining units will be used for operations by the three entities. “People could start in the shelter and end up in permanent housing,” said Trigueiro, adding that the services they receive from the agencies would help with stability. “It’s not just about getting them in a home. That’s a goal, but now that you have a home, let’s keep you housed.” The award comes from the state’s Homekey program, a follow-up to a program known as Project Roomkey that temporarily sheltered homeless people in hotel rooms. A total of $600 million was set aside for Homekey, the majority of that funding, $550 million, comes from the state’s share of COVID-19 relief funding, and the rest comes from the state general fund. According to Newsom’s office, the funding was to help people experiencing homelessness who are at high risk for serious illness from

COVID-19. Paso Robles has seen the highest number of COVID-19 cases in SLO County with 1,105 as of Nov. 2. According to the last Point in Time survey, Paso Robles had 239 homeless people, many of whom live in the Salinas Riverbed camps. The City of Paso Robles put together a fire abatement program for the riverbed and cleared out people, directing them to a temporary shelter on Borkey Flats. “Paso Robles has no emergency shelter, and also has a higher proportion of non-white residents than the county as a whole, and a disproportionate number of COVID-19 cases,” a news release from the state Governor’s Office announcing the award. “This project will provide both
emergency shelter and permanent units.” Plans for a permanent shelter in Paso Robles were on track after the City received $1.5 million in state Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP) funds from the County in March of 2019. With assistance from ECHO, Paso Robles was planning to build a shelter on Sulphur Springs Road. The design process for Sulphur Springs revealed significant shortfalls in the original budget estimate of just under $1 million to construct the center, with an updated cost estimate of nearly $2.7 million. Faced with this extreme project budget shortfall and the economic crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the City Council voted to terminate construction plans for a homeless center at Sulphur Springs. The City would need to reallocate its HEAP

funding to a new project in Paso Robles or forfeit it to the County. HASLO, PSSH, and ECHO requested that the City reallocate its portion of the HEAP grant to support this project. Doing so would trigger a match from the state. Council voted 5-0 to reallocate the funding to HASLO at a special meeting on Oct. 29 with more than 10 stipulations, including the facilities be self-sufficient for five years. Section 8 will help fund the low-income side of the facility. Homekey funds are expected to help with sustainability for the first two years. The project does not need council approval. Gov. Newsom recently signed AB 83, providing land-use “streamlining” for projects awarded Homekey funds. Such projects are allowed “by-right” and are not subject to discretionary local permit review or approval process before proceeding with the project. Homekey projects are also California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exempt if they meet outlined requirements. The Motel 6 is close to the busy Highway 101 and Highway 46 East intersection, restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, the Paso Robles Event Center and three popular hotels. HASLO, PSHH and ECHO realize some businesses in the vicinity are not going to be happy with the project. Each has been successful with similar facilities elsewhere. “We hope people will see this more of a solution than a problem,”Trigueiro said. “At least now, there will be somebody for people to call besides the police.”

Atascadero ceremony will be at Faces of Freedom; Paso Robles will have a drive-thru STAFF REPORT NORTH COUNTY — Veterans Day will be celebrated in North County, but it will be different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Atascadero will have a ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11, but Paso Robles has shifted its ceremony to a drive-thru. Each Nov. 11, the U.S. celebrates Veterans Day. In 1918 Armistice Day marked the end of World War II — The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to honor veterans from all wars. Instead of the traditional ceremony at the Paso Robles District Cemetery, a drive-thru of the Avenue of Flags will be set up Wednesday by organizers. People can view the Flags throughout the Paso Robles District Cemetery and around town, put up by the Boy Scouts. The Atascadero ceremony will be held at the Faces of Freedom memorial, located at 9029 Morro Rd, starting at 11 a.m. The ceremony includes a flag line by Welcome Home Military Heroes, the National Anthem by local artist Rebecca McKinley, a speech by John Couch, former Atascadero Chief of Police, and presentation of the Distinguished Veteran of the Year awards. Thanksgiving for Paso Robles Shifts to Drive-Thru
People can pick up dinner Nov. 26 at St. Rose Catholic Church parking lot By BRIAN WILLIAMS
PASO ROBLES — Preparation for Thanksgiving for Paso Robles annual dinner usually begins with the core group meeting in August, but it started earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We usually meet in the middle of August and begin planning,” said Thanksgiving for Paso Robles Chairman David Kudija. “With everything shut down due to COVID-19, I started thinking about it in May, and we started talking about it in July. We think we have a solid plan in place.” The nonprofit group has come
up with a workable plan and will be serving its 26th annual Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 26. One significant difference this year is it will be a drive-thru instead of the usual sit-down dinner, complete with tablecloths, fine China and a home-made dinner. “It will still be a complete Thanksgiving dinner,” Kudija said. “People will just have to drive-thru to get it.” The other significant change is the location. The drive-thru will be held in the parking lot of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 820 Creston Rd., Paso Robles. It had been held inside the banquet room at Centennial Park since 1989. Mildred Wilkins started the annual event and shepherded it for the first 20 years. Two ladies, transplants from Orange County, Linda Stermer and
Rhonda Evans, oversaw it for three years together, after which Stermer continued for a total of 10 years. It was held at the Paso Robles Senior Center until it moved to Centennial Park’s banquet room. Kudija has been in charge of the free community staple for the past six years. Except for it being a drivethru and moving to St. Rose, he said everything else should be the same. “It continues to be open to everyone, free of charge,” said Kudija, who has been volunteering for 26 years. “It will be a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings — ovenroasted turkey, country ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, green beans, candied yams, cranberry sauce, green salad, rolls, house-baked pies, lemonade, tea and coffee.” Guests are not required to sign up before Thanksgiving. this year,” Kudija said. “This year, with the economy suffering and the way this crazy year has unfolded, we think more people are going to come out.” If people do not have transportation, Kudija said, Thanksgiving for Paso Robles will bring a meal to their residence on Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving for Paso Robles asks that people requesting delivery of a meal call 805-239-4137 by Nov. 20 to get on their schedule. Kudija said they are always looking for volunteers and gladly accept donations. People wanting to volunteer must sign up via the website at thanksgivingforpasorobles.com. The volunteer sign-up period runs from Oct. 20 through the week of the event. This dinner is the only event put on by the nonprofit Thanksgiving for Paso Robles. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 662, Paso Robles, CA 93447. “Thanksgiving for Paso Robles is 100 percent organized and executed by volunteers,” Kudija said. “We expect a large turnout this year again and your assistance is needed more than ever.”

Hearing Aid Specialist of the Central Coast Offers Free Mask-Mode Program for Essential Workers STAFF REPORT ATASCADERO — Peter Lucier, owner of Hearing Aid Specialists of the Central Coast, can now program hearing aids with a new mask-specific program. Following best practices and National Acoustic Lab’s new guidance, Lucier can program hearing aids for better speech understanding while others are wearing a face covering. He has had many requests from his patients in the past seven months to adjust their hearing aids since mask usage became mandatory. His office, Hearing Aid Specialists of the Central Coast, is now offering this
service to the essential workers in our community at no charge to them. “I have several patients who work at CMC, ASH, Trader Joe’s or Miner’s. They just can’t hear clearly through the plexiglass and masks”, says Lucier. “These workers have a tough job even in normal times; if I can help them hear better on the job, it’s the least I can do.” Hearing Aid Specialists will add this new program at no charge for essential workers struggling to understand others. Lucier wants to give back to these hard-working individuals of San Luis Obispo County. Police officers, hospital staff and grocery store workers are on the
front-lines night and day. Setting up the new mask-mode takes about 30 minutes and it can be programmed to 95% of all brands of hearing aids on the market. It is done at Lucier’s office while you wait. This procedure is by appointment only and their schedule is filling up quickly. Peter and his wife, Nicole Lucier, are the practice owner of Hearing Aid Specialists of the Central Coast. They have been serving San Luis Obispo County for the past 20 years. They have two offices, one in Atascadero and one in San Luis Obispo. All About Monarchs: What They Need and How We Can Help STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — Every fall, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate to the Central Coast of California to spend the winter at special overwintering sites. This phenomenon is one of the great spectacles of nature. But their population has declined severely, and the habitat and plants they depend upon are facing multiple threats. Join biologist Jessica Griffiths on Nov. 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. as she leads a virtual talk, and from 3 to 4 p.m. for a walk through the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden. You’ll learn more about monarchs, why they’re declining, what they need to thrive, and how you can help. Griffiths will share the most up-to-date information from scientists and conservationists about monarchs and what you can do to create and protect monarch habitat.
Virtual Presentation and Garden Walk are each suggested donation of $5 Garden Members/$10 Public. Attendance is limited and ticket sales will end at noon on the day of the event. Visit slobg.org for additional information and event registration. Griffiths works as a biological consultant for Althouse and Meade, Inc., an environmental consulting firm in Paso Robles. She has her master’s from Cal Poly, where she completed her thesis on overwintering monarch butterflies. She has worked with monarchs on the Central Coast for almost 20 years in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. Over the years, she has trained hundreds of volunteers throughout California to count monarch butterflies, and she is currently the SLO County Coordinator for the Xerces Society’s annual Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count.

STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) will construct a new solar generation project at California Men’s Colony (CMC) in November as part of its ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint. CDCR has installed solar arrays and wind turbines at 17 institutions and expects to complete the CMC solar project next summer. “Renewable power provides a clean energy source, reduces the burden
CDCR institutions impose on the power grid, saves taxpayers money and demonstrates our commitment to meeting the state’s energy goals,” said Kathleen Allison, CDCR Secretary. The 2-megawatt (MW) ground mount solar array system to be installed on the grounds of CMC outside the secure perimeter is expected to generate nearly four million-kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year, which is equivalent to providing electricity to approximately 460 homes per year. The CMC solar project is estimated to provide approximately 25 percent of the institution’s annual electricity requirements, reduce the load on the local power grid and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by
ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Unified School District saved taxpayers more than $6 million by taking action to refund the redeemable portion of their 2010 Election, Series A Bonds. The refinancing will deliver savings to taxpayers of $6,132,655. The savings result from the District refinancing the callable maturities of the 2010 Election, Series A Bonds. The par amount of the bonds is $21,935,000, with serial maturities from 2021 to 2041, matching the original bond schedule. “The District’s Board of Trustees takes our job very seriously of providing the best education for our students while at the same time protecting the taxpayers. Our recent action to reduce borrowing costs and passing these savings on to taxpayers helps us accomplish both,” said Donn Clickard, AUSD Board president. The Atascadero School District worked with financial adviser Dale Scott and Company of San Francisco to provide advice, counsel and execution of the bond refinancing. “We are always thinking forward to help the school districts who engage us to find ways to deliver world-class education at the lowest possible cost to their taxpayers,” said Dale Scott, President of DS&C. “Saving taxpayers money while not diminishing funding available for education is a win-win,” Scott said.

The project will be built, operated and maintained at the developer’s own expense in exchange for CDCR purchasing the electrical power at discounted rates. This will allow CDCR to save approximately $4 million in utility costs through a 20-year power purchase agreement. Public Health Department Receives Traffic Safety Grants
Sixth Inmate Tests Positive for COVID-19
STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department was awarded two grants for a total of $215,000 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to continue its programs aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on roadways. The grants will fund best practice strategies to address child passenger safety and pedestrian and bicycle safety in the County. “The Office of Traffic Safety grants will provide coordination, collaboration, and education to individuals in the community about the importance of child safety seats, pedestrian and bicycle safety, and the dangers of driving under the influence, with a particular focus on reaching youth and young adults,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “The efforts will help achieve the County’s vision of a healthy and safe community.” The grants will help address traffic safety problems and reduce the number of persons injured and killed in traffic collisions. The grants will focus on three areas: Child Passenger Safety — According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most parents are confident that they have correctly installed their child’s car seat. However, in most cases (59%), the seat has not been installed correctly. With this grant, the Public Health Department will work to address this by continuing to offer free car seat inspections
and education for all community members, as well as distributing free car seats to low-income residents. Public Health will also provide booster seat use education to kindergarten classes and promote public awareness of the consequences of leaving children unattended in or around vehicles. Pedestrian Safety — According to the 2017 OTS rankings, San Luis Obispo County ranked 41st out of 58 counties in the state for pedestrians injured or killed in accidents. This was an improvement from 2016 when the County ranked 38th. Educational presentations will focus on reaching community members who have shown high rates of pedestrian motor vehicle crashes, such as elementary students and elderly adults, who continue to be a vulnerable population. Bicycle Safety — According to the 2017 OTS rankings, San Luis Obispo County had the fifth-highest rate among California counties for bicyclists killed or injured in bicycle crashes. Education and training will be offered to adult community members as well as elementary school-age children. Public health staff will collaborate with Bike SLO County to provide community education, host bike rodeos when possible, and distribute safety gear such as reflective armbands, lights, and helmets to those in need. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — A sixth inmate at the San Luis Obispo County Jail has tested positive for COVID-19, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Office reported Monday, Nov. 2. The inmate was asymptomatic and was tested on Oct. 29 as part of County Jail protocols. The test came back positive on Oct. 31 and the inmate was immediately
isolated. Inmates who may have been exposed have been placed in quarantine. The total number of SLO County Jail inmates who have been infected with COVID-19 is now six. This is the first case of an inmate testing positive since Sept. 29. A total of eight Sheriff ’s Deputies have tested positive for the virus — three patrol deputies and five correctional deputies.
During August and September, two Correctional Deputies tested positive for the virus, but they were not working during their contagious period, and so no one at the Jail was exposed. These cases were reported to Public Health, counted in the County case numbers, and provided to the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), the governing body for County Jails in California. The Jail reports cases in inmates

CRIME
SLO County Counter Human Trafficking Team Make Arrest in Florida STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — On Apr. 28, Florida resident Dominick Alleva was arrested in San Luis Obispo County for suspicion of statutory rape. Alleva subsequently bailed out of custody. Further investigation led to additional criminal charges being filed against Alleva for suspicion of human trafficking of a minor and the possession, production, and distribution of child pornography. During his new arraignment on May 19, the judge raised bail to $150,000 from the original $45,000. Then on May 20,
Alleva posted bail and returned to Florida. Investigators later determined that Alleva had violated the criminal protective order put in place by the judge in this case, but due to him being located in Florida, he was unable to be contacted. Over the last few days, the San Luis Obispo County Counter Human Traffic Team, a team comprised of investigators from the Sheriff ’s Special Operations Unit and the District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, traveled to Florida to locate and arrest Alleva on an outstanding $750,000 arrest warrant issued by the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court.
With the cooperation and assistance of the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office Special Investigations Division/Human Trafficking Task Force, Alleva was contacted and arrested on Nov. 2 and subsequently booked. The warrant stemmed from new charges related to stalking and witness intimidation. Alleva currently awaits further court proceedings in Palm Beach County custody. It is anticipated that Alleva will be returned to San Luis Obispo County to continue court proceedings related to the underlying human trafficking case and fresh charges related to witness intimidation and stalking.

Sharing her love for the beach and close friends, she would often enjoy late-night card games filled with laughter and the sounds of the waves in the background. Shirley loved to travel, and over a 24-year period, she visited 45 nations and often reflected on her adventures. She was documented riding an elephant in Thailand, holding a kangaroo in Australia, and snapping photos on a safari in Africa. She fell in love with photography in eighth grade and grew her passion for taking pictures throughout her life. Shirley was a big baseball fan and never missed a Giants’ game. She experienced all the thrills of the Giants run to three World Series titles in five
years (2010,2012,2014). She loved relaxing by completing jigsaw puzzles, one right after another. Sharp, as a tack, her mind was always working on the next day’s order of business. A good cup of coffee and the LA Times, from cover to cover, always started her day. In her later years, her most treasured memories revolved around moments with her grandchildren and, most recently, her great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Hugh and Winona Black. She is survived by her three children: Matt (Robin) Masia; Michelle Masia-Ferry; Mitchell (Mia) Masia; her five grandchildren Mateo, Shaina (Gerrell Knightshead), Logan, Amani, Naima; two great-grandchildren Trenton and Camden; as well as her sister Linda Pacheco and nephew Greg (Charlyn). Shirley will be remembered as someone
who lived a full and rich life shared with all her family. Interment and graveside services will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Paso Robles Cemetery beginning at 1 pm. Services are under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home in Paso Robles. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following: • Paso Robles Pioneer Museum 2010 Riverside Ave. Paso Robles, CA. 93446 • Castleman Disease Collaborative Network (affecting a close family member) CDCN.org OR Local Donation and checks mailed to: Castleman Disease Collaborative Network PO Box 3614 Paso Robles, CA 93447
a journalism course, a career she hoped to pursue. Ironically, they canceled it after she enrolled there, but she stayed on, planning to take it up in college. But, in her senior year, she met a transfer student, James Coots. She and Jim became sweethearts, and after graduation, she worked as a model in NYC’s fur market, putting off college and journalism. She and Jim were married in September of 1951 and moved into a studio apartment in Greenwich Village. Though they loved each other, it became apparent they had too many differences. The marriage was annulled a year later. After six years of modeling, on a whim, she answered an ad for Arthur Murray dancers, as dancing had long been a passion. She met a fellow teacher, Tom Curci, and they married in 1958, but that marriage also proved a mistake, and they separated before their second anniversary. In May of 1960, her best friend of 10 years introduced her to her step-brother, David Richards, a Miami Beach Police Detective, visiting his father in N.Y. Instantly attracted (she always said she fell in love with his mind first!), they pursued mostly postal courtship, with letters flying back and forth for a year, until they were married in Miami a year later, May 1961. Said she finally got it right! – They were together for 48 years until his death in 2009. Their son, Steven, was born in July of 1962, and when he was five
months old, David’s three children from his previous marriage, Stephanie, 11, Terry, 7, and Kathleen, 3, moved in with them. The family joke was they had four kids before their 2nd anniversary. A stay-at-home mom until Steven turned four and started nursery school, she then found a new career as a travel agent. For the next ten years, she and David traveled extensively in Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S., and Canada. This also included many camping trips with all four children. She enjoyed it all, the trips, the boats, the camping, the picnics, and the beaches. Music always filled their home, from Bach and Beethoven to Big Band sounds; to the Beatles and Rolling Stones; from Puccini Operas to Pink Floyd. From Billie Holiday to Nina Simone, to Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen. When David returned in early 1977, they moved west to their dream state, California, finding a wonderful home on a hill above the lake in Atascadero. Steven attended Atascadero High while oldest daughter Stephanie moved to Oakland, Terry and Kathleen remained in Miami. David and Pat (using her true name last) worked for a while in Real Estate, but David grew restless in retirement, and in 1981 they moved back to Miami, David as chief of security for the Cricket Club and Condos, and Pat, again changing careers, became an administrative assistant to the
general manager. They reluctantly sold their beloved California house and bought a condo on the causeway between Miami and Miami Beach. By 1988, having had enough of Florida, they pulled a fifthwheel trailer back to California, spending two years in an R.V. park in Morro Bay, reuniting with their son Steven, who’d stayed in Atascadero. Tragically, Steven died of injuries from an auto accident in April of 1989, at age 26. Devastated by this unexpected loss, they moved in 1990 to a lovely mobile home in Rancho Del Bordo Senior Estates in Atascadero. At Pat’s urging, David turned to writing as a distraction from grief and joined SLO Night Writers after winning first place in their short story contest. He soon got Pat involved (finally back to writing!), and they subsequently joined the Cambria Writer’s Workshop, where they made new friends. Writing and enjoying the company of fellow writers kept them busy and happy. Both David and Pat were elated when son Terry found his own ‘red-headed soul mate,’ and married his Irene in 2000. Pat’s wonderful circle of friends sustained her through David’s decline with congestive heart failure, and his death in March 2009, two years after his younger daughter Kathleen died from the same cancer that took her older sister, Stephanie, ten years earlier. In May of 2009, Pat rejoined the
Cambria Writer’s group. It helped her through her healing process, and she wrote several novels in the next few years. Pat continued her passion for reading and never did stop dancing, thou solo, and in bare feet. She took up Tango lessons after her 80th birthday. Said she needed to remember how to dance with a partner again- and in shoes! That brought great joy to her life, and she loved dancing at the Madonna Inn with her teachers, Frank and Rod, who became good friends. Music filled her days, especially her favorite singer, Leonard Cohen. His lyrics, she said, seemed to speak to her. Always an optimist, Pat’s philosophy was, “ Life may not always be a party, but while you’re here, you may as well dance!” Survived by beloved son Terry, and his incredible wife, muchloved daughter-in-law (and friend), Irene, of Miami; her wonderful and supportive circle of friends (you all know who you are!)- as well as her very special feline pal, Smoky Joe, who sadly predeceased her in 2017, but stayed in spirit. “Let a tear fall, if you will, but let a smile come quickly, for I have loved the laughter of life. Go- eat, drink, talk, and laugh- and never stop dancing.” A celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Democratic National Committee would be favored.

PASO ROBLES — A 30-yearold Paso Robles man was arrested after charging a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff ’s Deputy with a knife Friday morning at a senior living complex south of Paso Robles. At approximately 6 a.m. on Oct. 30, SLO Sheriff ’s deputies responded to a check the welfare call regarding a woman’s grandson at a senior living apartment complex in the 2800 block of Ramada Drive near Paso Robles. The grandson, Jeffrey Alan Gomez, 30, of Paso Robles, was visiting his grandmother when she became concerned about his erratic behavior and feared he might be
experiencing a mental health crisis. When deputies arrived, the man ran into the apartment and barricaded himself inside armed with a knife. The grandmother had left the apartment shortly before deputies arrived. Residents of the senior living apartment complex were told to shelter in place. For approximately the next three hours, SLO Sheriff ’s negotiators and mental health workers tried to engage Gomez in dialogue. During this time, Gomez appeared to be agitated. He broke the front window of the apartment and began throwing items out of it, including a TV set. Negotiations continued for approximately another hour. Then, suddenly, Gomez jumped

Gomez continued charging toward a deputy with a knife, at which point CHP officers on scene deployed their less-lethal tasers at Gomez. After being struck by the tasers, Gomez then threw the knife at a deputy. The deputy was not harmed. Gomez received lacerations to his face and body when jumping out of the broken window. Medics on the scene examined him. Gomez was then taken into custody. Gomez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
STAFF REPORT PASO ROBLES — The passenger in Jeep Cherokee died after being hit by a runaway tire Thursday, Oct. 29, on Highway 101 north of Paso Robles, reported the California Highway Patrol. Two unrelated minor injury crashes were reported nearby the fatal accident shortly before 3 p.m. on Oct. 29. At approximately 2:20 p.m., Dean Levonian, 61, of St. Augustine, Fla., was traveling south on Highway 101 south of South Spring Street at approximately 55 mph in his 2008 Ford F150 truck towing a 2014 Crossroads fifth-wheel trailer.
While traveling in the southbound No. 2 lane, the right rear wheel became dislodged from the trailer’s rear axle for a yet-to-be-determined reason, CHP reported. The wheel rolled across the southbound lanes of traffic and cleared the median guardrail. As this was happening, Beverly Mays, 81, of San Miguel was driving north on Highway 101 in the No. 2 lane in a 2019 Jeep Cherokee at approximately 60-65 mph accompanied by a right-front passenger. After clearing the median guardrail barrier, the wheel landed on the top of the Jeep’s passenger side. The wheel’s impact caused major blunt
force trauma to the passenger, who succumbed to the injuries within minutes of the crash, CHP reported. The name of the passenger has not been released pending notification of family. Levonian was unaware the wheel had separated from his trailer and was flagged down by a southbound motorist who witnessed the wheel come free from the trailer, CHP reported. Levonian stopped his truck and trailer southbound on Highway 101 north of Main Street, where officers contacted him. There were no indications that alcohol, drugs or distracted driving contributed to the collision, CHP reported.

A Glimpse of Vanished America Living in a military community, childhood friends came and went with regularity as fathers were transferred from one installation to another but long enough for friendships to be quickly established. In 1959 when I was 9 years old, the neighborhood hit the jackpot with the arrival of a new neighbor with four boys; the oldest named Jim was my age. cards and nostalgic landscape painters. There is absolutely nothing in the world that compares to Vermont Sugar-Maple trees in full autumn regalia. The colors, the yellow, orange and red display mixed with other hardwood trees in full autumn bloom creates a kaleidoscope of color unmatched anywhere else on Earth. I’ve lived throughout the United States and on several other continents and will testify that a New England Fall is beyond comparison to anywhere else. During our time in New England, I discovered the works of Eric Sloane (1905-1985), an artist and painter of American landscapes, tools, barns and bridges who authored 38 books in devotion to America’s past. His book titled “Vanishing Landscapes” was particularly instructive and brought to life many aspects of American landscapes. Ever drive down a country road in the East and notice a spectacularly large trunk of a dead tree near a farmhouse? It was likely the remnants of an American Chestnut tree whose girth, height and shade was not just spectacular but indicative of what a “first growth tree” repre-
sented. Critics of the Hudson School of art were often critical of what appeared to be outsized representations of American landscapes until educated about how spectacular first growth American forests were. The American Chestnut tree was a natural fixture on most farms, providing shade but also “a favored wood for barn-building and house-siding.” Sadly, it was the victim of an invasive pest borne into the country in 1904 “when the chestnut blight broke out in New York’s Botanical Garden with the importation of oriental plants.” The disease escaped the Garden and spread concentrically for the next 20 years, killing every American Chestnut that it encountered. Today, they are not to be found except in rotting trunks and stumps, which lasted the better part of 50 years after being felled. The wood was most desired and considered a prize when found, which during my youth were often located in the deeper recesses of a forest. Today they are almost non-existent. Country roads today are often a pleasant drive to escape the tedium or stress of
life of even a small town in the modern age, but in the 19th century, they were an endurance contest. Unpaved, mired in mud during rain, they produced dust when dry, along with uneven surfaces and holes capable of undoing even the sturdiest wagon. A “country lane” was a rod (16 1/2 feet) in width, allowing trees to provide a tunnel of shade overhead. At the time, people believed that a “gently undulating road is less fatiguing to horses than a level one…the alternations of ascent, descent, and levels call into play different muscles, allowing some (horses) to rest while others are exerted…thus relieving each in turn. This theory was used in New York’s subway. A gentle dip between each station got the train underway while the upgrade of the next station worked with the brakes to bring the train to a stop.” Are you tired of politics? Escape to Eric Sloane’s America or simply enjoy our local countryside. bottom. When I took it back the first time, the sales “associate” (that’s what it said on her badge) said I’d merely bought the wrong washer. On my second trip back, the associate suggested I buy the entire stem, which, much to my chagrin, was also the wrong size. Ditto the third and fourth trips. On the fifth trip, I wore a disguise and waited until the associate who’d helped me earlier was on her break. The new associate suggested a different fix but I never did get the right part. I decided to go to a store on my next trip to a bigger town to avoid further embarrassment. A few days later when I took the wrong part back to our local hardware store for a refund, thankfully, the clerk didn’t recognize me. I apologized and said, “I must hold the record for having to come back to the hardware store the most times on the same day.” She just laughed and said, “No, I just heard on my break about one idiot who had to come back five times!” Can you imagine that? I’m afraid I can. Lee Pitts is an independent columnist for The Atascadero News and Paso Robles Press; you can email them at leepitts@leepittsbooks.com.
‘Once Truly Saved, Always Saved’ — John 3:16, 10:27-30, Ephesians 2:8-9

tion by visiting pioneermuseum@att.net in Paso Robles. Historical organizations are so important to our communities and we are blessed to have active groups in Paso Robles and Atascadero. Now, speaking of holidays, as I did at the beginning of this column, we will soon be preparing for Thanksgiving. We probably will not have as many folks at the table as we have had in the past, but I’m sure our menu will continue to be traditional. However, it will be fun to tweak a recipe or two, so I’m including the following idea for you. This has to do with that “tried-and-true” green bean casserole. I’ll start with the classic recipe first and then tweak it, so here we go!
COLUMNIST
t is well known that Baptists sincerely believe in the biblical doctrine referred to “as once truly saved, always saved.” This doctrine is theologically called the eternal security of the believer. This doctrine states that a true believer in the gospel concerning Christ’s death for sin, burial, and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) will be saved from God’s judgment forever and can never lose or forfeit salvation due to failure to please God or keep His commandments. In this meditation, I want to give the biblical basis for this doctrine.
Salvation, in its totality, is given to a believer on the basis of God’s grace. The apostle Paul states this very clearly in several scriptural passages: • Titus 2:11: “For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.” • Romans 3:24: “being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” • Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.” Salvation has been provided by God’s grace and is received as a free gift. Grace is clearly defined in the Bible as the opposite of human effort or works in Romans 11:6: “And if by grace then is it no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of
works, then is it no more grace otherwise work is no more work”. This is why salvation is a gift from God that is received by faith: “For the wages of sin is death but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). A gift is never earned. Grace also can not be earned. Salvation is a gracious gift received or rejected but never earned by human effort or good deeds. God’s gracious gift in salvation is everlasting life that is only received by believing in the gospel of Christ ( John 3:16, 10:27-30). It is impossible to receive the gift of everlasting life just for a short time. Everlasting life will last forever because Jesus promised His sheep that He would give them” eternal life; and they shall never perish” ( John 10:28). It is impossible to lose
the gift of everlasting life. The major error of those that deny the eternal security of a believer is the misunderstanding of the accurate meaning of the word “grace.” Grace can neither be earned by works nor forfeited by failure to obey God as a believer. If salvation were by works and could be lost by failure to obey God, then salvation would not be by grace. Salvation is solely based upon the complete and finished work of Christ done on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice for sin. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 1 Peter 3:18). It is a wonderful comfort and blessing that God saves believers by grace and that His salvation will have everlasting benefits. SLO Republican Party Rallies in Paso before 'MAGA Drag the Interstate' MAGA Rally at Barney Schwartz Park STAFF REPORT
S
everal hundred people from around San Luis Obispo County and Santa Maria gathered for a “MAGA Rally” at Barney Schwartz Park in Paso Robles on Saturday, Oct. 31, before cruising south through the cities of SLO County and US 101, finishing in Santa Maria. Barney Schwartz was filled with red hats, American flags, and several women dressed as suffragist to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. Before heading to the highway, the SLO County Republican Party held a rally with speakers including CA 24th Congressional District candidate Andy Caldwell, and Republican Party SLO District 1 Chairperson Linda Becker. Becker, dressed as one of the suffragist in a white dress and red hat, delivered a speech encouraging participants to vote in the 2020 election. “Thank you Republican Party for giving us the right to vote,” Becker said, referencing the Republican effort to establish the 19th Amendment. “Please get out and vote, and invite your friends and family to get out and vote.” The 19th Amendment was introduced by California Senator A.A. Sargent, a Republican, in 1878. It was defeated four times by a Democrat-controlled senate. Sargent proposed the bill with the support of suffragist Susan B. Anthony, and it was passed after 41 years when the Republican Party gained control of the senate following the 1918 election. “We are celebrating 100 years of that 19th Amendment, and it is such an important obligation,” Becker said. “I encourage you to walk in your ballot.” Becker followed her encouragement with an anecdote about her sending a Thanksgiving letter in the mail last year that did not arrive at the intended address until Christmas. “Hello, am I going to send my ballot in the mail and take a chance? No,” Becker said. Becker also provided info about early voter stations around the North SLO County — four in Paso Robles,
one in Templeton, and three in Atascadero, open today. She finished her speech with information about the common ground the Republican Party shared. “As conservatives, we want less government interference, lower taxes, personal freedoms, and we want to grow our economy,” Becker said. “So we are going to vote ‘no’ on all propositions except 20 and 22.” Caldwell followed Becker and voiced his concerns regarding the importance of the election. “This election really, truly does present an existential threat to the future of, not just America, but what we know as the ‘free world,’” Caldwell said. “Right now, in America, there are calls to abandon our Judeo-Christian heritage, Western civilization, our laws, cultures and institutions, the nuclear family, belief in God, and the concept of inalienable rights and self-evident truths.” Caldwell seemed to be referencing some of the calls to action and mission of Black Lives Matter, who until late September had listed the disruption of the “Western-prescribed nuclear family structure” as a core mission on its website. The page was called “What We Believe” but as of Sept. 24 the page had been entirely deleted. “I can tell you through my knowledge of history, political science and the rest,” Caldwell said. “If we abandon any of those things, let alone all of them, America ceases to exist. Our Declaration of Independence is a cornerstone — we believe in inalienable rights and self-evident truths ... that have created an atmosphere of freedom and liberty. What they want is complete and total control by government.” The surge of Republican patriotism and support for President Trump has been in some part credited to state government responses to coronavirus, including actions by California governor Gavin Newsom who has recieved sharp criticisms by business owners leaving California. “It’s because he put America first again,” Caldwell said of the ire given to the president. The rally ended with a speech and a prayer by Bishop Gabe Abdelaziz of The Revival Center in Paso
Robles. Following the rally, hundreds of vehicles dressed in American flags, Trump 2020 flags, Gadsden flags, and other patriotic regalia began a trip down Spring Street south ending in Santa Maria. MAGA Drag the Interstate Approximately 1,000 participants in several hundred vehicles crawled through Paso Robles from Barney Schwartz down Spring Street honking horns and playing music in support of what organizers called “a big ol’ heap of old-fashioned American patriotism.” The event was dubbed #MAGADragTheInterstate, part of a national effort. On Twitter, the hashtag brought up videos from around the country, including Colorado, Connecticut, Tennessee, Washington, and Arizona — one post from user @darin_west counted 762 “Trump Trains” and claimed the number was growing. The Connecticut rally claimed to have more than 3,000 vehicles, and a participant in Colorado stated “people here are sick of lockdowns and liberal policies.” Another Colorado driver said “The patriotism was vibrating through the air.” In California, rallies were seen from Sacramento where there was reported more than 10,000 vehicles and parades in Coachella Valley down south. Minnesota was represented by Julia Procopio who wrote “We gonna go RED baby!! First time in 47 years!!” Online criticisms of the rallies countered the patriotism claimed by the participants. Some posts on social media compared the rallies to the Taliban. Locally, the mood was high-spirited and patriotic. The “Trump Train” entered US 101 south at Spring Street and traveled to the SpringHill Suites and Staples parking lots in Atascadero, where it staged for the trip down El Camino Real. At that stop, the scene was reminiscent of a college football tailgate party with music and people milling around the parking lot. The Frisco family met there, being from both Paso Robles and Morro Bay. The Atascadero News and Paso
Robles Press spoke with the family about why they were there. “I’m a supporter of Trump, and I’m a Republican through and through,” Patrick Frisco said. “I just want to come out here and show we are definitely in support of Trump not only across the country but here in this county as well.” It was not their first rodeo. “We did a boat parade out on Nacimiento [Lake] a couple months ago,” he said. “I can’t say this is my first parade.” With hundreds of vehicles flooding the streets and highways, the parade was met also with real time traffic. Entering US 101, the parade was escorted by two CHP vehicles and no local incidents were reported. Patrick Frisco said he was impressed by the movement. “I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he said. “Driving down the road, looking at what is going on here, this is history. This is historical. I’ve never seen anything like it, and I don’t know how long it will be until we see something like this again.” All around the country, there may have been hundreds of thousands of vehicles in support of the re-election of President Trump and conservative ideals. “This is incredible,” Frisco said. “The solid support that is backed behind — not just the person, but the ideology — the ideologies that founded America. This [parade] is consistent with our Founding Fathers — freedom, liberty, personal responsibility, less taxes, respect for everyone as an individual from the very beginning of life to the very end of life.” A Republican president has not won California since 1988 when Ronald Reagan’s vice president George Bush won. Since then, Republicans have been hammered at the presidential polls for the past seven elections, beaten by the Demo-

cratic Party candidate by an average of 55.3 percent to 37.4 percent, with 2016 recording the largest win for the Democratic Party candidate in history. The year 2020 is nothing short of historic so far, and a historic election hangs in the balance. Whether California Republicans can muster the forces to move the needle toward their candidate is yet to be known, but it is evident the Democratic Party candidate is not inspiring the same enthusiasm from his base. “Just on our street in Morro Bay, we have three Trump [flags] on people’s front doors, including ours,” Danielle Frisco said. “I think people are starting to wake up and realize what is at stake here in this election. This election is more important than any election that I’ve been alive for and I’m excited to be doing this with my kids. It has taught them a lot, and they are very patriotic. They are little Trump supporters, and I know they

will be voters one day and that is the most important thing.” Her 7-year old son Blake had plans to support the president when he was able to drive. “I’m going to bring a bus full of people in the back and I’m going to be the driver,” Blake Frisco said, “and they will all be holding Trump flags at a Trump rally.” Blake’s father Ryan was glad to bring his family to the rally to enjoy people who shared similar values. “Sometimes, being conservative, you feel alone in your thoughts, so it is nice to be a part of a larger group and see a lot of other people share my beliefs,” Ryan Frisco said. The optimism generated by the large congregation of attendees around California teased that change was in the air. “If this is the start of the momentum, or the impetus in turning the state red again, fantastic,” Patrick Frisco said.

AUSD surveyed the parents of elementary students in recent weeks to find out which families wanted to return to in-person education and which desired to continue with distance learning. In the Oct. 20, School Board meeting, Superintendent Tom Butler revealed that 52% of parents chose to continue distance learning while 48% opted to return. As far as COVID-19 protocols, the Atascadero District is putting the burden of preliminary testing on the parents, trusting them to check their children for symptoms before coming to school. The District sent home a checklist for each parent to run through with their child before coming to the campus. The list, which has seven bulleted

Several of the trustees visited school sites Monday morning to observe the reopening and shared their experiences. “I had a brief opportunity to talk to a couple of teachers at each site, and it has been a challenge to get it going and wanted to give all teachers a shoutout,” Trustee George Shoemaker said. Butler later went into detail on the updates made to the District’s reopening plan, which can be accessed on the AUSD website.Trustees first approved the plan on July 21 and first submitted it to the San Luis Obispo County items, contains preliminary measures such as temperature checks, uncontrolled coughing or shortness of breath, sore throat, muscle fatigue, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or severe headache especially linked with a fever. Students are also required to sanitize their hands each time they enter or exit the classroom. As the community moves further into the flu season, schools also have to be prepared to deal with students dealing with symptoms while at school, which the District has done by preparing two medical staging areas on site. One is reserved for children experiencing potential COVID symptoms, while the other is dedicated to standard issues such as scrapes and medication. “We used to have a health room, but now we have what is known as

“I wish I could vote, but I’m not old enough yet. This is something that I can do and still make a difference.” The center at 2198 Riverside Ave. opened Oct 31 for the first of four days of operation along with more than 20 others across San Luis Obispo County, where people can vote in-person or drop off ballots. Each center was open daily through the end of Election Day, Nov. 3. Mitchell said she learned of the opportunity to work at the voter service center after seeing a social media post. “I saw it on Facebook and thought it sounded fun,” she said. “I usually volunteer with clubs, but there hasn’t been much of that this year.” She is already looking forward to doing it again and recommends that other people do it. “This is a great way to get yourself out there,” Mitchell said. “It’s been really fun.” Voter Service Center Coordinator Barbara Strong said they were pretty busy at the Paso Robles location when they opened and that it was steady.
“We are doing what we need to do,” said Strong, who has been working elections for several years. “People have been friendly and great. No problems.” There were 23 Voter Service Centers throughout San Luis Obispo County — eight in the North County — three each in Atascadero and Paso Robles and one in Templeton and Heritage Ranch. The Voter Service Center at the County Clerk-Recorder’s Office upstairs at the Atascadero Library, 6565 Capistrano Ave., was adopted by the Creston Community Center. Susan Branche was the coordinator. San Luis Obispo County offers “Adopt a Poll” to community organizations and nonprofits. The program allows the local nonprofit organization to provide volunteers that will serve as poll workers and have their proceeds combined to benefit the affiliated organization or charity. Branche, who has been helping at polls for 30-40 years, said this is a win-win situation. “The Creston Community Center benefits,” Branche said. “We have not been able to do many of our fundraisers this year due to COVID. Department of Public Health. The reopening plan has since been approved three additional times — Oct. 14, Oct. 20, and Oct. 26 — as the County and the District continue to update the plan as new information is provided. Nurses will see if the student in question has any documented conditions contributing to the situation, such as allergies or asthma, and continue the evaluation. “If a student develops symptoms at school, not just COVID but anything, we have a policy where the teacher will call the nurse, we will triage the person near the classroom at first,” Lorenzen said. “To decide if there

have learned over half of what we learned last year. Me and her [Maddi] do so much on the car now that we would never have thought that we would have the chance to do so. It has been really cool.” This year the Gordon racing team had two new mechanics, and suddenly the wins are pouring in. Over the last several years, Doug has been near the top of the sport, finishing in second, third, and third in consecutive seasons but couldn’t find that one thing that could put him and the team over the top. “This year, when we get to the final round, we have actually been able to complete it and get the win a lot of times,” Doug said. “Some of it is because we did a better job; some of it is because we are luckier, and maybe the girls are my good luck charm. Since the girls have been with me, the win light comes on a lot more. Honestly, we have been to almost every final run since they have started coming and won more than half of them probably.” The season has been incredibly fulfilling for Doug, a National
Champion and his new blonde mechanics, who have loved spending time with the family and learning the tricks of the trade. “At the beginning of the year, I was super upset because I was in the process of getting my license, so I had my permit, and COVID held me up from getting my license. I was super annoyed and thought this was the worst year ever, and I was determined that it was going to suck,” Maddi said. “Now, I describe this year as living my dream. I couldn’t want anything more. We travel with my Dad and Papa and Grandma and Rick all the time.” Doug and the Gordon team were so dominant this year in the shortened COVID season that he didn’t even have to wait until the final weekend to watch their dream come true. “We have been racing alcohol funny cars, my dad was driving and then I was driving, we’ve been doing it for 30-something years and we never really thought that this could actually happen,” Gordon said on the podium after winning the trophy. “This year, I just said the family is going on the road with me, and we’ve got a great team.”
people have an opportunity to vote in-person.” Branche said there had been a steady stream of people coming inside to vote but that most were using the dropbox in front of the library. “Almost everyone has made a comment about how great it is that we are here,” Branche said. “People have been great, following all of the COVID guidelines.” Masks and social distancing were being enforced at each Voter Service Center. Workers sanitized equipment after each use. All California ballots had to be received by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, or, if mailed, needed a Nov. 3 postmark date. Mail-in ballots postmarked Nov. 3 will be accepted for up to 17 days after Election Day. See Preliminary Results on Page 5.
