Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer, announces move into the red tier and loosening of restrictions
By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Unified School Board of Trustees came together on Tuesday night and confirmed that Atascadero Secondary Schools would be reopening on Monday for in-person education for students and families that choose to return on campus in the last parent survey. Assistant Superintendent Curt Eichperger also covered the topic of vaccines, reporting that the local school district’s in the county would be receiving 10 percent of the allotment to vaccinate their employees. By MELISSA MATTSON melissa@atascaderonews.com S A N LU I S O B I S P O COUNTY — The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Mar. 2 at 9 a.m. The Board started with approving the consent agenda, which was approved 5-0. The next item for discussion was the COVID-19 update from County Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein. Borenstein explained the accelerated progression into the Red Tier and what new changes that brings, including all schools of all grades being opened. “Obviously, COVID is still with us, but I’m here with a lot of good news,” stated Borenstein. Borenstein went on to say that there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of cases. While still high, they are nowhere near the spike of just a month ago. In addition, the positivity rate has come down to 3.2 percent. The number of individuals in the hospital is 19, which is the first time in a while that it has been below 20. Read more about this in “SLO County Moves to Red Tier Effective Mar. 3” Additionally, she spoke on the current numbers of vaccinated individuals, the process to get on the list, and that some pharmacies were now able to offer vaccines, currently only in Arroyo Grande, but as more vaccines become available, she expects to see this increase. Following this, the Board moved on to submittal of the Fiscal Year 2021-22 County and State Budget update and the Infrastructure and CONTINUED ON PAGE A12

Young Journalists Produce The Bengal Bugle
San Benito Elementary School starts student newspaper club By CONNOR ALLEN connor@atascaderonews.com
ATASCADERO — There is a new monthly newspaper in Atascadero that is starting to catch readers’ attention. It’s named the “Bengal Bugle,” produced by a student newspaper club at San Benito Elementary School of 12 aspiring journalists and graphic artists and assisted by fourthgrade teacher Kaylie Edgar. The team club is made up of fourth and fifth graders and is genuinely a studentdriven organization from selecting stories all the way
down to editing. Cooper Cohen, Audrey Warren, and Karis Dadson make up the fifth grades in the club and are joined by Autumn Anderson, Alyssa Heredia, Charlotte Barazza, Luke Rigby, Coen Myracle, Bear King, Landon Chubon, Valerie Hubbard and Ariana Gomez who are in fourth grade. The newspaper began in January of 2021 as part of an idea that Ms. Edgar had to help the kids feel more connected to the school while dealing with distance learning. What began as a fun idea was quickly grabbed by the excited students who now sacrifice their lunch breaks once a week to meet and discuss their next issue and prepare for virtual publication.
“It was something I had been thinking about doing; before this, I taught second grade, so this was my first year with the upper grades, which are a lot more capable of writing,” Edgar told the Atascadero News. “This is something that I have always wanted to do, and with distance learning and students being separated from each other, it seemed like there was no better time to start. Now they have become more connected with what is happening at the school, and it provides something for really our whole school to feel connected together.” Not only does the Bengal Bugle produce great articles with insight into how students CONTINUED ON PAGE A12

Bearcats and Greyhounds Kickoff Swim Season
First competition for both teams, who had their seasons cut short a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic By CONNOR ALLEN
ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Greyhounds and Paso Robles Bearcats kicked off the swim season this past Friday afternoon with a dual meet against each other at the Atascadero High School pool. Due to the limited space at the Greyhounds pool, no spectators were allowed to watch the meet. It was the first competition of the season for both teams, who had their seasons a year ago cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Though it was only their first time racing someone other than their teammates, the Bearcats already looked in midseason form, defeating the Atascadero boys 136-13 while the girls won 102-65.
“It feels great to have everyone out here again,” Girl’s head coach Michael Sauret told The Atascadero News. “It feels a little bit of normal while everything is still upside down. It feels awesome; you have to kind of catch yourself sometimes, but the mask is a good reminder for yourself, but it feels great to be out here.” This season the Bearcats have a head coach for both the boys and girls swim teams. Sauret, who was the head coach last year, now coaches the girls while boys’ water polo coach Collin Moore has become the new boys’ head swim coach. “It is a good way to get the polo boys to swim and get the swimmers to -- you know not all of them play polo -- but just to get them more invested and together, united,” Moore said of holding both the water polo and swim jobs at the same time. “Sharing that athlete base is pretty common between polo and swim, but it is nice to be able

to see the boys all year round and know what they are doing and being able to talk to them and motivate them.” The meet began with the girl’s 200-yard medley relay and was won by the Bearcat team of Abby Springer, Mackenzie Ruppe, Holly Disimone, and Kendall Moffitt with a time of 1:57.65. The Greyhounds team of Annika Pauscheck, Maggie Uceda, Sophia Donati and Makayla Power finished with a time of 2:08.08 While the Greyhounds didn’t win many races on Friday, it did not affect the team’s outlook nor its coaches, who were just happy
to finally be back in the water. “I am super stoked and excited to have the kids back out in the water,” Atascadero head swim coach Alyx Truax said. “I think everyone has been cooped up and looking forward to having an activity to do again. Getting everyone outside and socializing in a safe way.” The girl’s 50-yard freestyle was one of the tighter races in the day
with Moffitt, who recently signed to swim for California Lutheran University, edging out Atascadero’s Power. Moffitt finished with a time of 26.54 while Power touched at 28:72, just ahead of Paso Robles’ Tyler Seidel. Doherty Named Big West Freshman of the Week
STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — After tossing the Cal Poly softball program’s first no-hitter in three years on Friday, Feb. 26, and homering in both games of the team’s doubleheader split versus Boise State, freshman right-hander Bailey Doherty was named Big West Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday, as well as the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week. During Cal Poly’s 2-0 win against Boise State to open the Feb. 26 doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton’s Anderson Family Field, Doherty – in just
her second collegiate appearance and start – struck out 12 and faced just two batters over the minimum to record the program’s first no-hitter since righthander Lindsey Chalmers blanked UC Davis on Apr. 14, 2018. Doherty began the matchup by striking out the Boise State side in the top of the first inning before striking out two more in the second. She then provided herself the only run support needed by leading off the bottom of the second with her first career home run. Only walks issued in the fourth and fifth innings kept Doherty from a perfect game. Doherty’s 12-strikeout performance marked the highest total by a Mustang since All-American Sierra Hyland struck out 13 CSU Bakersfield hitters on Mar. 25, 2017. During game No. 2 of the Feb. 26
doubleheader, Doherty hit a two-run homer and struck out two in three and one-third innings of relief. She took the loss, however, after allowing a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as Cal Poly fell, 7-6. During the two games, Doherty struck out 14 in 10.1 innings and held Boise State to a .118 batting average. At the plate, she recorded a 2.000 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage. The legend only continues to grow for the Atascadero High School alum who racked up 48 wins, ten no-hitters, and five perfect games in only three years as the Greyhounds ace. Doherty verbally committed to the Mustangs her sophomore year and in only two starts as a freshman has proved that she can dominate Division 1 competition just as she did while in orange and grey.
As a program, Cal Poly opens its home slate at Bob Janssen Field when hosting Saint Mary’s for a three-game, March 6-7 series. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 6.

Traffic Records Moves Twenty Feet to a Larger Location Switches locations with Bland Solar Company By CONNOR ALLEN ATASCADERO — Those searching for records in Atascadero will be pleased to hear the Traffic Records has recently relocated to a larger space only twenty feet from where it sat before. Traffic Records and Bland Company saw their leases come time for renewal and decided it would be mutually beneficial to switch as the record store needed more sales space and Bland Solar was open to a smaller location. During the first week of February, the two businesses made the change, and now Traffic Records sits at 5850 Traffic Way while Bland is at 5870. Due to the

tight restrictions placed on businesses based on square footage, Traffic Records owner Manuel Barba was forced to make a decision. “The max number of occupancy that I could have of shoppers at any one time was two to three with people waiting outside. As the store got increasingly more successful and busier, I found myself setting up a lounge area outside in the hopes that people might stick around and wait,” Barba said. “I didn’t feel like I had much of a choice; it felt like the walls were closing in on me. People would come in, and I would get anxiety because I would have three people inside and three people outside.” While the pandemic undoubtedly hurt the business by restricting the number of people allowed inside, in a way, it also helped as it forced the local record store
to pivot and expand their business model. “I am kind of thankful for the need of pivoting,” Barba explained. “It challenged me as a business owner to get creative to reach a bigger, broader market.” Traffic Records now ships records worldwide, including places in foreign countries like Australia and New Zealand and across the US to major cities such as New York, Chicago, and New Orleans. Traffic Records has more than double the sales space in the new location and is filled with records from every genre and every time period. Beginning in 2021, you can also find new records in the store as well as all the classic hits you could ever want. Traffic Records is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Traffic Records new storefront and retail Sunday’s from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. space. Contributed photos
ATASCADERO — With the news coming on Tuesday afternoon that SLO County would be officially moving into the Red Tier, which allows secondary schools to return to in-person education, the Atascadero Unified School District has announced that several events will be returning this spring, albeit altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the events returning will be Mock Rock, Prom, Top 30, Senior Scholarship Night, and Graduation, complete with a local Grad Night. Due to COVID-19, each of the events will be modified, and some are still in the early stages, but it appears students and families will at least get a few events to end a year taken by the virus. “We are working with the District and with the County, following all protocols, and we are going to formally submit our request to the county for graduation here pretty soon.” Atascadero High School Activities Director and ASB Advisor Kerry Sherer told the Atascadero News on Monday. Although still in the preliminary stages and is subject to change, the plan would allow for a normal graduation on Jun. 3 that would be set up in the stadium for the students. In a typical graduation year, students are almost already appropriately spaced and will keep the same format. Depending on the colored tier the County currently sits in will determine how many family members will be allowed to attend graduation per student. Atascadero is also planning to offer a Grad Night to the class of 2021 that will be held at the Ravine Waterpark in Paso Robles. Owner Brett Butterfield has graciously agreed to help the seniors have a night of fun with five waterslides and even a new mystery attraction that the public is yet to see. The Senior Parent Committee is working with the District and the Ravine and currently seeking donations. Those interested can email Sherer at kerrysherer@atasusd.org. AHS will also bring back other senior experience staples like Top 30 and Senior Scholarship Night, this time presented in an outdoor fashion. Top 30 will take place on May 19 in the outdoor cafeteria area to allow families to spread out. Senior Scholarship Night will be held on May 26 on the lawn next to the new science buildings in a picnic setting where families are encouraged to bring blankets and low-back chairs for a fun and safe environment. Mock Rock and Prom will also return this spring. Mock Rock will be held on Mar. 20 with a drive-in style format. Students have been encouraged to film their mocks or any talent they wish to enter and submit to the selection committee. A group of students have been tasked with turning all the submissions into a movie and will debut it on the screen as well as streaming online for all to view. Atascadero is still working with the County but plans for a Prom on May 22. In order to reduce costs, AHS has decided to hold the Prom in the football stadium. The school would provide tents, a dance floor, a DJ, and some individually wrapped food items, and tickets are expected to be only $20. “The kids are probably going to have to wear masks unless somehow we end up in Yellow [tier], or Orange,” Sherer added. “But the kids have told me they are willing to go and wear a mask if they can have a Prom.”

County Superintendent Addresses Vaccines for Educators and New Guidelines for Youth Sports
STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — On Friday, Feb. 26, San Luis Obispo County Health announced that starting on Mar. 1, some local child care workers and K-12 teachers and staff working in-person will be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Eligible workers in this
sector will be contacted directly by their employer to schedule appointments; the County will not be involved in the process. In addition, starting last Friday, sports with modifications will be able to resume based on guidance from the California Public Health Department, which applies to all organized youth and adult sports, including school, community programs, private clubs, and leagues. This change was possible because San Luis Obispo County’s COVID-19 case rate dropped below 14 cases per 100,000 – which is below the State’s threshold for allowing these activities to return. The San Luis Obispo County
Office of Education released a statement regarding vaccines for educators and the newly released guidelines for youth sports on Saturday. County Superintendent James Brescia explained, “The County Office of Education and CAPSLO coordinating with public health are now scheduling vaccination appointments for educators in childcare, districts, charters, private and parochial schools. I worked the phone lines for the first few hours and directly observed how quickly and efficiently the process operates.” Brescia went on to say, “If local health metrics continue to improve, our county may be
allowed to move into the Red Tier by the state, which permits secondary schools to continue increasing in-person services. All school agencies in the county have plans to move forward should conditions allow.” Currently, California has: • 47 counties in the Purple (widespread) Tier • 9 counties in the Red (substantial) Tier, which is where San Luis Obispo is • 2 counties in Orange (moderate) Tier. Blueprint tiers are updated weekly each Tuesday. Find the status of activities in specific counties. Brescia explained that the Central Coast Athletic Associ-
ation (CCAA), which includes all county districts, has met and created “Return to Play Guidelines” to help implement new guidance released by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). General requirements for all indoor or outdoor sports continue to apply, including limitations on observers (limited to household members for “strict purpose of age-appropriate supervision”), face-covering and distancing requirements, prohibitions against out-of-state games and tournaments, and competitions limited to one competition, per team, per day. Modified Youth, Recreational Adult Sports Can Start on Friday SLO County’s COVID-19 case rate dropped below the State’s threshold of 14 cases per 100,000 STAFF REPORT SAN LUIS OBISPO — San Luis Obispo County Health announced today that organized youth and adult sports with modifications can resume in San Luis Obispo County starting on Feb. 26, with some modifications based on guidance from the California Public Health Department. The guidance applies to all organized
youth and adult sports, including school, community programs, private clubs, and leagues. This change is possible because San Luis Obispo County’s COVID-19 case rate dropped below 14 cases per 100,000 – the State’s threshold for allowing these activities to return. “Youth sports are important to our children’s physical and mental health, and our public health approach has worked to balance those benefits against COVID19 risks,” said Dr. Tomás Aragón, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer. “With case rates and hospitalizations declining across California, we are allowing outdoor competition to resume, with
modifications and steps to reduce risk, in counties where case rates are lower.” The updated guidance includes requirements that must be observed by all sports, including use of face coverings by observers and coaches, distancing between non-household members, limitations on spectators, limitations on tournaments, and other requirements. It also includes requirements that must be followed when sports under the Orange Tier and Red Tier lists are played in counties in a more restrictive tier. This includes weekly testing for players and coaches in certain high-risk sports - like football, rugby, and water polo - where players are
likely to be unmasked, with close, face-toface contact over a long period of time. Outdoor moderate-contact sports, such as baseball, cheerleading, volleyball, gymnastics, and badminton, can be played without the testing requirement but require informed consent. For all sports listed under the Red and Orange Tiers, teams must provide information regarding risk to all parents/guardians of minors participating. Each parent must sign an informed consent indicating their understanding of the risks. For more information on examples of sports with different levels of contact and risk by tier, view the updated guidance.
COMMUNITY LANDMARK
Galaxy Theater Could Face Foreclosure As the County Moves to Red Atascadero City Council Passes a Resolution In Support of Galaxy Theatre and Colony Square STAFF REPORT ATASCADERO — At the Atascadero City Council meeting held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, the City Council adopted a Resolution in support of Galaxy Theatre, all Colony Square commercial tenants, and the Colony Square property owner during COVID-19. The City of Atascadero recognizes that Galaxy Theatre, along with all of the retail tenants of Colony Square, are a vital component of the downtown community. Keeping the theater and the Colony Square businesses alive and operational and with continuity of ownership, is critical to the community’s recovery from the economic effects that the COVID-19 restrictions have had. Since the COVID-19 related March 2020 statewide shutdown of many businesses, especially restaurants, theaters, and other venues that include public gathering, Galaxy Theatre has been primarily closed to the public, other than a few private events. The closure has resulted in significant economic hardships to both Galaxy Theatre and the surrounding businesses, the impact of which has been felt by the business leaseholders as well as the owners of the Colony Square properties. Cinema Square LLC property owners have been working closely with the Colony Square tenants, including Galaxy Theatre and Que
Pasa Mexican Restaurant, throughout the pandemic-related closures. Galaxy Theatre is one of the most significant tenants in Colony Square and provides the largest portion of rental revenue for that portion of Colony Square, owned by Jeff Nelson. During the pandemic-related closure and economic hardships, the theater and neighboring businesses have not been able to make rent payments, which in turn has severely restricted Mr. Nelson’s ability to keep up with mortgage payments on his portion of the property. The lender on the Cinema Square LLC property, a lending group from New York including Wells Fargo, CW Capital, SEER Capital, Jeffries LoanCore, and Wilmington Trust, has initiated foreclosure on the Colony Square property, which includes Galaxy Theatre. Under New York law, they legally cannot foreclose on any New York property and according to some reports, the foreclosure action against the Colony Square property in Atascadero may currently be the only COVID-19 related commercial foreclosure in San Luis Obispo County. The City of Atascadero states that when open and at typical capacity, Galaxy Theatre is a major contributor to the overall success of Atascadero’s downtown. The theater’s survival is a vital component of the City’s well-being and without it, Atascadero will not only lose a significant entertainment venue, but many other existing, as well as potential new downtown businesses, will suffer as well, with reduced lodging, dining, shopping, and foot traffic.
Elected officials have weighed in on the issue to express their concerns, including U.S. Congressman Salud Carbajal, who stated, “The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating to many of the small businesses that form the character of our community. We must do everything in our power to support these vital businesses and keep them alive, so they will still be around to prosper and continue to contribute to our local economy when we come out on the other side of the pandemic.” California State Assembly Member Jordan Cunningham stated, “Before foreclosing a cherished and economically-important local business, the bank should give Galaxy Theatre the opportunity to apply for and receive a grant as part of California’s days-old stimulus program.” Assembly Member Cunningham went on to say, “Over the past year, too many local businesses have been forced to permanently shut their doors - resulting in unprecedented job loss on the Central Coast. With new programs available to small businesses, I join my colleagues by imploring the bank to halt foreclosures and give business who have been able to survive this long a chance at a California small business grant.” “I know how important Galaxy Theatre and the Colony Square businesses have been to the economic growth and vitality of Atascadero’s downtown community,” stated 5th District Supervisor Debbie Arnold. She went on to say, “At a time when many businesses are struggling through no fault of their own, we need all economic partners working together, including the banking
COVID-19 testing for football and water polo athletes and coaches, with results made available within 24 hours of competition. Brescia ended with, “School districts may require more stringent guidelines than those included in the CDPH guidance. Adherence to public health safety requirements is much appreciated.” Governor Gavin Newsom launched the Safe Schools for All Hub back in January as a one-stop-shop for information about safe in-person instruction as well as California’s Safe Schools for All plan. community, to ensure an economic recovery in San Luis Obispo County.” According to Mayor Moreno, “Until COVID-19 struck, the businesses of Colony Square, including its anchor, Galaxy Theatre, were a major contributor to the progress and success of Atascadero’s downtown. Our community needs an open and thriving Colony Square with its vital entertainment venue, Galaxy Theatre. Continuity of ownership and allowing these businesses the opportunity to make a come-back are critical to the successful recovery of our downtown while foreclosing on these properties could have a longterm, devastating impact”. The Atascadero City Council adopted the Resolution that declares the significance of Galaxy Theatre to Atascadero and that its temporary closure due to COVID19 is against the will of the property owner and operator of Galaxy Theatre. The Resolution states that the potential foreclosure and loss of the theater in the community has significant negative impacts on other businesses and on City revenues and services as well. Now a week after the Resolution was made, the County is able to move from the Purple Tier to the Red Tier of the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. This allows for Movie theaters to open indoors with a 25 percent maximum capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer. Galaxy Theater has announced they will re-open on Friday, Mar. 5. Cunningham Announces Student Mental Health Bill Package STAFF REPORT SACRAMENTO — Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) announced on Feb. 24, that he has introduced a bill package aimed at getting K-12 students greater access to mental health professionals in public schools in order to deal with the mental health impacts of COVID19 lockdowns and school closures. Specifically, AB 1080 would allow school districts to partner with outside mental health providers or clinics to provide in-school mental health treatment for students. AB 1081 would provide $500 million through the Local Control Funding Formula to school districts that commit to providing adequate mental health resources to students. “The pandemic has had a major impact on our children’s mental health and wellbeing. School closures have limited the time kids spend around one another, and extracurricular activities like sports, music, and drama remain severely limited,” said Cunningham. “By increasing both the funding and the pool of accessible mental health professionals available for our kids, we can make sure children have the mental health resources they need. “This has been a difficult year, and our kids deserve all the help they can get as we transition back to in-person learning.” According to a recent CDC study, mental health-related visits to emergency departments increased during the first six months of the pandemic. Mental health-related emergency visits by children aged 5-11 increased by 24 percent, while visits by children aged 12-17 increased 31 percent year-over-year.
MARKETPLACE EQUITY
National Weights and Measures Week: March 1 to 7 ‘Measuring Up to the New Norm’ STAFF REPORT NATIONAL — National Weights and Measures Week, Mar. 1 to. 7 commemorates President John Adams’ signing of the first United States weights and measures law on Mar. 2, 1799. This law ultimately led to the establishment of today’s enforcement framework assuring consumer protection and equity in the marketplace. The theme for 2021, “Measuring Up to the New Norm,” addresses the ongoing challenges that come with new technological advancements in the areas of commercial measuring and weighing devices, methods
of sale, and quantity control activities. This past year with the pandemic, many have taken to alternative methods of shopping through online transactions, including the expansion of grocery delivery services, curbside pick-up, and direct home deliveries through e-commerce transactions. These are just a few examples of the many online experiences accelerating e-commerce activity throughout the country. Many of these transactions are completed without ever interacting with business personnel, relying on computer software and store employees for transactional accuracy. provide consumers options from electricity as a motor fuel to untraditional blends of biodiesel. Alternative ways of traveling, including those such as Uber or Lyft use advanced GPS and timing software to charge for distance and time traveled. These alternatives require software testing and approval for accuracy and performance standards. Many of these new technologies are discussed at the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) level where standards professionals, industry members, and regulators meet to develop future specifications and tolerances for consumer protection activities.
These types of devices and services offer exciting new opportunities for customers to explore. With these new technologies, weights and measures officials face the challenge of applying basic principles to complex technologies to protect consumers and ensure equity in the marketplace amongst competing businesses. San Luis Obispo County weights and measures officials are active members in NCWM, regularly attending annual meetings and trainings to gain insight on new technologies impacting state and county jurisdictions. Newsom Visits Cuesta College Vaccination Clinic Hours After County Moves to Red North County Supervisors were not extended an invite to the last-minute press conference By CAMILLE DeVAUL SAN LUIS OBISPO — California Governor Gavin Newsom visited the Cuesta College COVID vaccination clinic on Tuesday, Mar. 2. Newsom made an impromptu visit to the vaccination site following a visit to Palo Alto. The Governor planned to visit a vaccination site in Ventura County after visiting San Luis Obispo. The Governor addressed the press and said California would be getting the new Johnson and Johnson vaccine soon. He stated that we would have “more choice, more voice” with three vaccines to choose from. “I can only say this, when it’s your turn, say yes to whatever dose that you are being offered. I would take without a hesitation, without exception, I’ll wait my turn. But when it comes to my turn, they say J and J, I say yes. They say Moderna, yes. They say, Pfizer, yes,” said Newsom. Joining Governor Newsom was San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon, Cuesta College President Jill Stearns, and County Supervisors Bruce Gibson (District 2), Dawn Ortiz-Legg (District 3), and Lynn Compton (District 4). Supervisors John Peschong (District 1) and Debbie Arnold (District 5) were not present. Both supervisors represent the
Northern San Luis Obispo County regions. According to Arnold, she and Peschong were not extended an invite to the last-minute press conference, nor were they aware of the Governor’s visit. The County Board of Supervisors board meeting was in session on Mar. 2 and had to go on an extended break for the last-minute press conference. “It did seem like an inconvenience to our constituents to have the meeting stopped and then started up again in the early evening and go into the night. These are people who expected to have their items heard in the afternoon,” said Arnold. Arnold said she felt SLO county residents did not receive full service from their public officials on Mar. 2. Over the last year, county elected officials have sent Governor Newsom letters asking for guidance through the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy or the Tier System. One of those letters was sent on Feb. 3 and was signed by Supervisors Peschong and Arnold and addressed official warnings from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) issued to local restaurants. Also addressed in the Feb. 3 letter was the lack of evidence that restaurants are super-spreaders of the COVID-19 virus and asked for scientific evidence to be publicly available and applied consistently. On Mar. 2, Supervisor Peschong signed and sent another letter to the Governor. This time Peschong asked the Governor to let schools open for in-person learning and allow indoor and outdoor sports to proceed.
“They did make some changes to allow us to do the outdoor sports, and I would like to see some changes to see these kids back into the gym to be able to play basketball, volleyball, and the other indoor sports--I didn’t get a chance to talk to him, so I sent him a letter, so he knows what we are asking for,” said Peschong. An excerpt from the letter: “Our students and educators are having difficulties with teaching and learning virtually. Families are stressed with providing adequate tools for students and encouraging their children to dedicate attention to their studies. Our County Public Health is working closely with all districts, charters, childcare centers, private and parochial schools to implement this request. All agencies are prioritizing the in-person staff for vaccination when the allocated vaccination slots become available. As schools increase in-person services, there are smaller class sizes, increased cleaning and disinfection, handwashing stations, ventilation upgrades, mask-wearing, and regular staff testing. We need your help to move us into in-person education.” Today, county elected officials have yet to receive any response from the Governor or his office. During the Mar. 2 press conference, Paso Robles Press asked Governor Newsom why haven’t our county officials received any response from the Governor or his office. Governor Newsom responded with, “I don’t know about the specific letters,

COVID-19 UPDATE
SLO County Moves to Red Tier Effective Mar. 3
By MELISSA MATTSON
SAN LUIS OBISPO — During the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors meeting, Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer, gave her COVID-19 update. “Obviously, COVID is still with us, but I’m here with a lot of good news,” stated Borenstein. Borenstein went on to say that there has been a dramatic decrease in cases. While still high, they are nowhere near the spike of just a month ago. In addition, the positivity rate has come down to 3.2
percent. The number of individuals in the hospital is 19, which is the first time in a while that it has been below 20. Borenstein explained that the number of those who have been vaccinated is 31,730, and nearly half of those have received both doses. The County is now looking at accelerated progression into the red tier because of the case rate and positivity rate. For the second week in a row, San Luis Obispo County’s case and testing metrics under the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy have

Cunningham Issues Statement on Legislature’s School Reopening Plan Cunningham speaks out against a bill that would further delay school reopening STAFF REPORT SACRAMENTO — Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) issued the following statement on Thursday, Feb. 25, regarding AB/SB 86, Legislative Democrats’ school plan that could result in delayed reopenings and closures of alreadyopen schools: “According to all the public health data available, schools can and should be open. The Governor and the California Department of Public Health have the ability, right now, to modify statewide school reopening guidance and allow any school with a safety plan that meets CDC guidelines to reopen. “However, rather than continue to pressure the Governor to change his unilateral ruling, legislative leadership has introduced a bill that would delay reopenings in many cases to mid-April. Their bill in current form could also impede efforts already underway to open Central Coast schools, which is why the California School Boards Association and county offices of education throughout the state share serious concerns about the bill. “I applaud our local school districts that have reopened or made steps towards reopening quickly. I hear the concerns of our students, parents, administrators and teachers, and will continue to work towards amendments to the bill that make it more supportive of local control and reopening efforts. I will also continue to work to prioritize educators willing to return to in-person instruction for vaccinations. “There is no more important issue in the state than getting all of our schools reopened. It is important to me as a parent of four kids in school, as a former school board member, and as your Assemblymember — to get this right. I will do my utmost to advocate for our kids and workforce to get back to class safely and for state policy that supports local efforts rather than obstructs them. As a result, I cannot support this bill in its current form.”
moved in the right direction. The County’s adjusted case rate is now just below seven and its positivity rate and health equity metric continued to drop, staying at Orange Tier levels now for two weeks. It’s the fact that these two metrics dropped two tiers below case rate levels that make SLO County eligible for what the State calls “accelerated progression” through the tiers, prompting the County’s move into the Red Tier. The tier grading system bases the County’s placement on their worst ranking metric but allows a county whose other two metrics are rank-
ing two tiers better to move into a lower tier. According to Borenstein, this move into the Red Tier, effective tomorrow, will allow for schools of all grades to reopen. Restaurants can resume in-person service at 25 percent capacity, as well as other facilities such as museums, gyms, and fitness centers to reopen at 10 percent capacity. This comes on the heels of Monday’s announcement by Governor Gavin Newsom, Pro Tem Atkins, and Speaker Rendon of an agreement that highlights a new
6.6 billion dollar package to reopen schools and deepen student supports. “This is a positive step in the right direction for our community, and I’m happy that we’re able to reopen more parts of our community,” said Borenstein. “But we cannot take this gift for granted. We must remain vigilant as we move forward so that we do not undo this good work.” The State’s Blueprint allows counties in the Red Tier to reopen indoor operations for some additional business sectors and allows for certain activities to resume. EDUCATION
Newsom Introduces $6.6 Billion Package to Reopen California Schools The proposed package moves to accelerate the safe return to in-person instruction and empower schools to expand academic immediately STAFF REPORT SACRAMENTO — On Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon highlighted an agreement on a $6.6 billion budget package to accelerate the safe return to in-person instruction across California and empower schools to expand academic immediately, mental health, and social-emotional supports, including over the summer. “Since the height of the winter surge, we have successfully shifted the conversation from whether to reopen schools to when,” said Governor Newsom. “Now, our collective charge is to build on that momentum and local leadership and – just as critically – do whatever it takes to meet the mental health and academic needs of our students, including over the summer.” The Governor was joined by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, and other
legislative leaders at Franklin Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified School District. The state’s fifth-largest public school district was among the first to close for in-person instruction last year. Last week, based on a deep partnership between school staff and leaders, the district announced plans to reopen grades K-6 in mid-March and grades 7-12 in early April. Elk Grove Unified and public schools throughout the state will be allocated $6.6 billion under the proposed budget package. $2 billion would fund safety measures to support in-person instruction, such as personal protective equipment, ventilation upgrades, and COVID-19 testing. $4.6 billion would fund expanded learning opportunities, such as summer school, tutoring, and mental health services. Together, the funds empower schools to develop and execute comprehensive strategies to reopen and expand programs to address students’ social-emotional, mental health, and academic needs. All public schools would be required to offer in-person instruction to grades K-2 for all students and for high-needs students in all grades by the end of the month, losing 1 percent of eligible funds every day thereafter if they do not. Schools in the state’s Red Tier or better would be required to offer
in-person instruction to all students in all elementary grades and at least one middle or high school grade or risk the same penalty. Together, these requirements help ensure schools begin to reopen as soon as possible in order to build trust and confidence to continue phased reopenings. As students return to in-person instruction, all public schools would also be empowered to meet the needs of the whole child. The Expanded Learning Opportunities Grants allocate $4.6 billion to local educational agencies based on the equity-based Local Control Funding Formula, with an additional $1,000 for each homeless student. These funds would be for supplemental instruction and support for social and emotional well-being. Schools would be able to use the funds for providing more instructional time, such as summer school, and accelerating progress to close learning gaps through tutoring, learning recovery programs, mental health services, access to school meal programs, programs to address pupil trauma and social-emotional learning, support for credit-deficient students and more. The package would also codify multiple successful state programs to support safe school reopenings such as Vaccine Prioritization for K-12 School Staff, Data Report-

Recall Gavin 2020 Campaign Reaches 1,825,000 Signatures SLO County’s local recall effort reports 24,445 signatures received, with 13,889 submitted ahead of the Mar. 17 deadline STAFF REPORT LOS ANGELES — On Thursday, Feb. 25, the official Recall Campaign against Governor Gavin Newsom has now gathered more than 1,825,000 signatures as of Thursday morning. The official announcement was made during an online meeting with more than 1,000 campaign leaders and volunteers late Wednesday night. A total of
1,497,709 valid signatures must be collected and verified to trigger the recall election. Orrin Heatlie, the Chairman of The California Patriot Coalition, Recall Gavin 2020 Committee, made the following statement: “Our campaign continues; our work is not done; it is just entering a new phase. We have overcome incredible obstacles in this effort, and we will not rest until Governor Newsom is removed from office by the People of California,” said Heatlie. “We cannot rest, we will not rest, the people of California are making this happen, not the political elite,” said Recall Gavin 2020 co-proponent Mike Netter. “Now we dig in even harder
and work without hesitation and intimidation. The people are the heart of this movement,” said Randy Economy, Senior Advisor of Recall Gavin 2020 campaign. San Luis Obispo County’s local recall effort reports it has received 24,445 signatures, 13,889 have been submitted to the county, and the Secretary of State has already verified 11,818 as of Feb. 25. The website states they have 12 percent to go, which equals 15,151 more signatures. Supporters in favor of the recall state that Newsom has failed Californians due to unaffordable housing, record homelessness, rising crime, failing schools, independent contractors out of work, exploding pension debt, and
mishandling of the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. A recall election would present voters with two questions. The first would ask whether Newsom should be recalled from the office of governor. The second would ask who should replace Newsom if he is recalled. A majority vote is required on the first question for the governor to be recalled. The candidate with the most votes on the second question would win the election; no majority required. The California Patriot Coalition/Recall Gavin Newsom 2020 is the official committee responsible for the recall campaign. The campaign has set an internal deadline of Mar. 10 to have all of the petitions collected. The
official deadline to complete the signature-gathering is on Mar. 17. The deadline for county personnel to submit signatures to the County Registrar of Voters is Saint Patrick’s Day, Mar. 17. According to organizers, the goal is to gather and submit a total of 2 million signatures by Mar. 17, which leaves them with 175 thousand to obtain before the deadline. The California Patriot Coalition/Recall Gavin 2020 is the official committee responsible for the recall campaign. For more information visit, RecallGavin2020.com. All voters of California can view and download the petition to participate in the campaign.

Dave held many different banking positions, including Chief Executive Officer of First Bank and Senior Vice President when the bank merger with Pacific Capital Bank was complete in 2005. Following his retirement, he decided he wasn’t quite ready to retire and organized a new Board of Directors to form American Principal Bank in San Luis Obispo. His life is filled with notable merit and civic leadership. He

He also served on many community boards, including the Housing Authority of the City of San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, Orfalea School of Business at Cal Poly, and Cuesta College Foundation. After retiring from banking, he enjoyed time with his family and friends, biking, attending sporting events, and spreading his laughter and love of people wherever he went. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and vacationing in Hawaii. It is hard to capture the impact he had on his family, friends, and the community. PAUL HILLIARD 1967 – 2021
I
t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Hilliard which occurred in Seattle Washington, on February 17th, 2021 as a result of contracting COVID19 and pneumonia, exacerbated by his weakened immune system from his transplanted lungs. He is survived by his wife, Halli Hilliard and his two children Teil Hilliard and Madison Hilliard. Paul was a force of will and determination, only to be outdone by his willingness to help those around him. We hope that this not be a lamentation of the loss suffered, but a celebration of the gifts
everyone knew Dave Booker. He had a passion for business and was always willing to mentor and help those starting in business. He will truly be missed by so many people. Dave is survived by many that loved him: his former wife, Linda Booker, and their children Beau (Danielle) Booker, Amber Sellinger, Benjamin (Cathrina) Booker; grandchildren Lila and Levi Sellinger, and Alexa and Abigail Booker; brothers Eric (Rayleen) Booker and Kurt Booker; his second wife, Jennifer Blomfield, and step-daughters, Bailey, Bridget, and Nellie Salisbury; step-grandson Dylan Metcalf; and his life partner for the past four years, Marilyn Hotz. He is predeceased by his son, Tyler Booker, and parents, George and Beverley Booker. When it is safe to do so, a gathering will be held to honor and celebrate his remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his name to a charity of your choice.
Paul brought to the world. He was born April 15, 1967 and grew up with his two younger brothers, Tom Hilliard and Corey Hilliard as a mischievous trio. He is survived by both. He married Charlotte, soon having two children: Reid Hilliard and Teil Hilliard. Reid's tragic passing at an early age helped Paul and Charlotte eventually come to adopt Madison Hilliard at the age of 2. On July 10, 2010 he remarried to Halli Hilliard and moved to Pasco, Washington to start a new chapter in his life. On February 5, 2014 Paul was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, a rare disease that affects the lungs. Never a defeatist, he remained stubborn and defiant in the face of this diagnosis, searching across the country for every organization, specialist, researcher, and fellow PF(Pulmonary Fibrosis) victims to seek out the best course of action. On
November 30, 2017 Paul received the news he had been working diligently towards since the diagnosis, he was getting a double lung transplant. This transplant breathed new energy into him as he became an ambassador for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and found renewed purpose in organizing meetings, fundraisers, public speaking, and encouraging those who suffered from IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis). He was a dedicated father, a hard working professional, and a committed friend to many. Paul was known in the community as a volunteer coach, a frequent host of BBQ's and dinner on a weekly basis where all were invited, an avid offroad motorcycle enthusiast, a fearless risk taker, and above all else a friend. We encourage everyone to remember Paul and share any fond memories they may have of him.

In describing it to me in his sales pitch, the owner described the place I'd live as a "nice little house," but it turned out to be a lean-to shed. Tractors had better accommodations than I did. There was no TV, but I didn't need one because the owner worked me 14 hours a day, and the minute I slumped off my saddle, I went straight to my mattress. Half the time, I didn't even eat, but that was okay because I didn't have any money to buy much food. COLUMNIST
n the past, when faced with a choice, after making my selection, I spent time worrying about whether I made the right decision— second-guessing myself like this created great fear and angst in me. As I cultivated my relationship with the Divine, I began trusting It as a power for good in the universe greater than me. I learned that while my small self may not know the answer, there is that within me which does know, and that is my Higher Self, the Self within all selves. As this relationship grew, so
did my faith. The second-guessing and doubt fell away naturally as I spent more time making conscious contact with Spirit in prayer and meditation. Fueled by faith, I know that I am guided, directed, and sustained by my Source, and I allow it to lead this divine dance of life. As Ernest Holmes put it, “When prayer removes distrust and doubt and enters the field of mental certainty, it becomes faith; and the universe is built on faith.” We are in constant prayer with our thoughts. What we think about we bring about. When I allow myself to get quiet, centered, and grounded, I realize I am in the presence of something mighty and magnificent. I am unified with the changeless, formless substance that has been and always will be - the Divine. It is as eternal and vast as the space that spans
beyond the myriad universes, and it lives within us all. While there is a universal experience of it, there is also a very personal experience of its indwelling presence daily as I move through the world. In this centered space, I am at home in the heart of God, in the place of love, where I remember that I am guided, directed, sustained, and inspired by my Source. Spirit is communicating to each one of us on many levels all the time. Our invitation is to pay close attention to the dynamic world occurring all around us. It wants you to notice it, nudges you from the inside, encourages you to take that step, speak those words, create that art, write from the heart, or pick up the phone and call that person. To commune with the Divine is to be in conscious contact

nancy check. One day I pregged about 60 two-year-old Angus heifers and thought I'd done a good job, but Mr. Big Shot didn't believe a 21-yearold kid could know anything, so one day, while I was out in the boonies fixing fence, he had a veterinarian preg them again because he didn't trust me. The vet and I agreed on the pregnancy status of every heifer except one. He called her safe, and I said she was open. Later, I found a job that paid $800 a month as a livestock field editor, so I wasn't around to find out if the heifer had a calf or was open, as I said she was. Years later, I ran into my former boss, and I asked if he remembered that heifer. He certainly did. "Did she have a calf or not?" I asked. "She sure did," Mr. Big Shot replied, trying to humiliate me and prove me wrong. "Two years later, she gave birth to a nice bull calf." with the presence of love that is the place within you beyond thought, beyond egoic structures, beyond fear, doubt, worry, judgment, control, complaints, and second-guessing. When we reach the edge of everything we know and are beckoned to the place of the unknown, our faith allows us to take that next step. In full faith, we jump into the unknown land of the heart, which is the land of love, the land of the mystic and mystical experiences; it is the land of the Divine. In this space, we remember that everything is ok - more than ok, in Truth. Dwelling here in Divine love, we thrive. And so it is.

title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website, www.nationwideposting. com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9462-5537. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 916-939-0772, or visit this internet website www. nationwideposting.com using the file number assigned to this case, 9462-5537, to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. ciation, Christine Williams. “It is exciting to be here tonight to celebrate the fact that our secondary schools are reopening to in-person instruction on Monday, Mar. 8,” Williams said. “I know my students today felt a little hesitant to believe it at first with the two false starts, but they finally got excited about being in person next week. We would like to thank Mr. Butler and the Board of Trustees for acknowledging the work that collectively both associations and the District have put into making these plans successful.” Following Williams, the Zoom meeting was joined by San Gabriel Elementary School Principal Shauna Ames, Santa Rosa Academic Academy Principal Tim Sobraski and Santa Margarita Elementary School Principal Marshawn Porter for their school presentations. Together the three Principals provided a presentation on how the schools are operating amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The presentation touched on safety and the measures being taken, interventions, and the services available, as well as successes both inside and out of the classroom. Next, the District recognized Max Zappas for the District Core Value of Excellence for his work with the aquatics program and, more specifically, water safety. Through work with the Greyhound Foundation, Zappas helped raise $17,486 through aquatic fundraisers donated to AUSD. “Thank you to the Board and to everyone who donated,” Zappas said. “I really think it was the community coming behind it, which is why it kind of got to where it has. Thanks to all you guys and to the community too. It’s been a long road, but we are happy with where we are now.” In his brief Superintendent report, Butler once again confirmed that the District would be reopening secondary schools on Mar. 8, stating, “We are reopening our secondary schools on Monday, Mar. 8, and are excited to share that.” The Board of Trustees members followed Butler’s report with their own, each taking time to spread thanks to the teacher’s organizations, the District and the families. During the reopening of schools’ information item, assistant superintendent Curt Eichperger first updated the Trustees on the facilities and ionization units before moving into the hot button issue of COVID vaccines. Eichberger stated that the District has received its first allotment of “educational vaccine set-asides.” 10 percent of the county’s vaccines have been set aside for education providers per Governors Gavin Newsom’s Re-opening California’s School Plan. At this time, AUSD is planning to have 56 spots for vaccinations available Thursday. The District is unclear if they will continue to have 56 spots each week as it is based on availability. “When we think of 10 percent in a county, and we look at the number of staff members we have, it is not enough. We are all cognizant of the fact that it is an undersupply for those wanting to be vaccinated.” Eichberger also noted that the District has an agreed-upon prioritization list with their labor partners for those wanting the voluntary vaccinations. Those in the first tier include employees who work in special education and employees who have already gone through the interactive process and have requested reasonable accommodations with their own medical needs and are either working in-person already or are coming back to in-person soon. From there, the next tier will include elementary staff, both classified and certificated, that have been working in-person since November. In closing, the Board agreed to a study session on Mar. 30 and approved two financial reports from assistant superintendent Jackie Martin. To view, this or any school board meeting in its entirety, go to Youtube.com and subscribe to the AUSD channel. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 16.
Facilities Five Year Capital Improvement Plan. These presentations can be viewed on the county website. After closed session, the Board returned to hear the Water Management Amendment 18 to Water Supply Contract between the State of California Department of Water Resources and San Luis Obispo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. This amendment would give more flexibility to the county in how they want to use any additional water over the allowed holding while still requiring that every use would have to come before the Board to be approved. Peschong stated his concerns on behalf of his constituents, “We really have gone out of our way not to allow water banking. If I can cut to one thing, this is what I worry about. [The verbiage of the amendment is] not strong enough to let the state know this is not the place they can store water underground.” Supervisor Compton acknowledged the difficulty of the water issue, “it is a difficult issue for me, but my district needs this…it’s needed in my area… I don’t have other sources of water. I don’t like this, I think there is some wiggle room, but my district needs this. If I voted against it, I would be voting against my district and my people. I’m not happy about it, and I do understand Debbie’s [Supervisor Debbie Arnold] concerns.” After much deliberation and hearing from the public, Supervisor Arnold made a motion to not approve the amendment, which did not have a second. Supervisor Gibson then put a motion to approve, which went to a vote of 3-2, with Supervisors Arnold and Peschong voting against. The Board then went on to hear appeals on two different conditional use permits. Mike Kyle, owner of Flying Caballos Ranch in San Luis Obispo, appealed the planning commission’s decision to cap events at 25 per year, with a conditional use permit of five years. After hearing from the public and looking at other event venues in the area to see what the standard of event allowances was, the Board ultimately voted to partially uphold the appeal, allowing 45 events per year, with a 12-year permit. The next hearing was an appeal by Peter Byrne of the Planning Commission’s approval of a request by Steve Olson for a Conditional Use Permit to allow construction of a winery facility on Kiler Canyon Road, West of the City of Paso Robles. The concern of the permit was regarding the additional traffic on the road, as well as the hours of operation to the public. The adjacent wineries in the area are limited to four days a week for tasting, with this facility approved for seven days a week. The Board made a motion to approve tasting five days a week, Thursday to Monday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment only on Tuesday and Wednesday. The vote was upheld 5-0. The next board meeting is set to be Mar. 16 and the agenda can be found on the county’s website.

and are off to an undefeated start. The Eagle girls are 4-0 to start the year after back-to-back victories over the Morro Bay Pirates on Feb 22 and Feb 24. Not only are the Eagle girls undefeated, but they are also playing at the top of their game and absolutely blowing away all of their competition. Before Thursday’s match, Templeton tinkered with its line up a bit due to Morro Bay being short on players, the Eagles had won 30 of 31 sets and were outscoring their opponents 193- 67. The team is led by no. 1 player Madeline Murray but has six strong players filling out their lineup. Sophia Sanchez is currently playing in the no. 2 position, followed by Ashlyn Miller, Carmen LaCaro, Aida Terrizzi and Ashlyn Janzen. The Templeton Eagles cross country team is also off to a strong start with a record 2-1 after defeating Mission Prep, 29-35. The Eagles have been led this season by their outstanding freshman Josh Bell who once again came in first place and, for the first time, had someone within shouting distance when he crossed the finish line. Bell finished with a time of 16:25 in the 5000 meters, which broke the school record by one second. The former record was held by Paul Denlinger and was set in 2008. There was no girls race because Mission Prep does not currently have a girls cross country team.

The Paso Robles cross country teams bounced back this weekend with a big win over Righetti. Both the boys and girls teams stacked the top ten with runners and won big; the boys defeated the Warriors 18-40 while the girls won 19-42. The two teams raced on a 3.1-mile course, with Bearcats taking the top spot in both races. The Lady Bearcats were led by Charlotte Castelli, who finished with a time of 19:28.6. Paso Robles took each of the top four places on Saturday, with Sidney Moore finishing second with a time of 20:52.1, followed by Jaden Anguiano (21:06) in third and Sophia Berry (21:40.8) in fourth. Cameron Leclair paced the boys and cruised to a 30-second victory with a time of 17:31. Righetti’s top finisher Corey Cambell came in second place, followed by a pack of five Bearcats. Diego Ortega (18:07) placed third, followed by Jason Scruggs (18:15.9), Joseph Martinez (18:25.8), Manuel Cruz (18:43) and Tristan Poggi (18:50).

This week the Atascadero and Paso Robles girls tennis teams face off twice to kick off their season. The Bearcats hosted the Greyhounds on Tuesday and will then be on the road on Thursday. The new tennis courts at Atascadero High School are not yet finished but are expected to be completed in the near future.
entire school to enjoy. In searching for new and fun ways to innovate their paper, Ms. Edgar and the Bengal Bugle staff reached out to The Atascadero News and set up a question and answer session with local journalist Connor Allen. Students asked many questions, inc luding how to hit deadlines and what topics are the most important and fun to write about. The Bugle staff also was very interested in how newspapers choose comics as there are a few aspiring graphic artists in the club. So far, the Bengal Bugle has produced three e-editions of their newspaper and had their newest one hit virtual newsstands on Monday. Each of the three online papers can be viewed online at sb.atasusd.org/ the-bengal-bugle.
