hroughout the days of COVID, several Facebook groups have formed to offer support. Gathering individuals that are willing to be of service and assisting those in need. As the weeks went on and schools became closed indefinitely, there was a unified sense of loss for our youth that would be graduating High school. This loss ignited a fire within Regina Orosco, a parent and North County community member that lives in Atascadero. North County High School Graduation Ceremonies

This year due to COVID-19, each of the school districts have had to think outside the box and come up with creative ways to celebrate our graduating seniors. Here are the ceremonies each district has come up with for this year.

Templeton Unified School District Templeton High School Graduation Dates and Alternatives to be determined at Thursday, May 28, School Board Meeting Graduation Ceremonies for this year’s graduating class has yet to be finalized. The proposal will be discussed at the School Board Meeting on Thursday, May 28. The meetings are generally held in the Eagle Conference Center at 950 Old County Road, Templeton, and commence at 6 p.m. unless otherwise posted. We are planning a parade of graduates that will culminate at Atascadero City Hall. All graduates and their families are invited to decorate an automobile, don cap, gown, and tassel, and together, with their families, follow a prescribed parade route along Traffic Way and across the front of City Hall, where each graduate will receive their diploma. All graduates will have their names announced as they “cross the stage.” The entire event will be broadcast on KJUG radio, live-streamed on social media, and professionally photographed. Spotlight speeches will be recorded and enjoyed online as well. Having this celebration live-streamed allows your additional family, friends, and loved ones the ability to enjoy a frontrow seat from the comfort of their own homes while minimizing health risks. Life As We Knew It

ife as we knew it may not be returning anytime soon, but this last weekend, we were able to see some glimpse of a new “normal,” and that is a good thing. With restaurants re-opening and now retail shops, we can start to feel less like we are living in fear and captivity and more in control of what we are comfortable with moving forward. We may not be ready to join everyone in a restaurant, but at least we have that option, and we may not want to walk into the post office or retail shop without a mask, but they are open, so we can determine that when we are ready.

We now have the ability to assess what we are comfortable with and what we aren’t, and that is a really good thing. I commend all the county officials that walked us through the last few months of uncertainty. I genuinely believe they did their very best with the information they had; it prepared us and allowed us the ability to make sound, informed decisions for ourselves as we begin to move forward. May we remember to be gentle and kind with one another with those decisions, and if we do not feel comfortable allowing people in our space, then we ourselves need to remain diligent in maintaining social distancing, however, we feel comfortable. Business needs to resume; beauticians need to get back to work; we need to maintain healthy practical measures that are appropriate in order to keep the affected number of people to a minimum. The coronavirus will not go away, we can all count on that, but we can get back to business and help one another stay safe as we do that. We have all been affected. Our kiddos are walking through something that will be told to

their children in history books, and we will be the ones who persevered through this global pandemic and the highest unemployment rate in American history at 14.7% (as of today), since the 1933 Great Depression that topped out at 24.9%. We will be the ones that tell the stories of all the creative ways we came up with to hold our businesses together with skeleton crews, virtual shopping, and curbside pickup and delivery. We will tell the stories of PPP and SBA Disaster Loans and what those terms even mean and how it impacted our local communities. We will tell about creating business models that will hold up as we continue to walk through this pandemic, however long that may be. Or we will tell the stories of how we had to change the entire course of our lives by closing down our dream and starting a new adventure. Our stories will include caring for loved ones or missing them for months on end. It will include homeschooling and finding creative ways to keep our kiddos entertained throughout the day. It will tell the stories of our graduating seniors that accepted their caps, gowns,

and diplomas from cars and parades while social distancing. It will tell of Zoom meetings, virtual pay dates, and masks as everyday accessories. Our stories will include the loss of loved ones and friends. It will tell of hope and acceptance of one another and how we supported each other during this difficult time. Regardless of what the story may be, it is a part of all of our stories. We can all relate; we can sympathize, and we can learn. It is time for us to create our new “normal” and get busy! Life will continue to keep moving forward. Our graduating seniors will go out and start their new adventure in this world, services will continue to be needed, and we will have national and local elections that will take place in November that need our attention. So now we get to decide for ourselves what our level of participation will be. It is time to get involved. We need to look at our current city officials and school board officers and do our research so we can decide who we want to lead us as we continue to move forward. This is our time. Now what comes next, is up to us.

Parents under the occupation and now under COVID-19 were/are required to take on more roles—patient, knowledgeable and responsive teachers, coaches, counselors, and creative recreational directors day in and day out. It is the people of the US who followed scientific fact-based directives bending the curve by staying home, social distancing, and wearing a mask. But what will the “opening” look like? Our state is implementing a plan. Our Governor updates and guides us daily on how to move through each phase safely as the first prior-

As in many earlier arguments over the social contract, Democratic officials take the lead in plumping for greater adherence to social distancing while many Republicans are reluctant. GOP governors were among the last to enforce the anti-virus tactics that now hold down California’s caseload, while Democrats like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer were among the first. Republican governors have been first to reopen their states, while Democrats are doing it much more slowly. The bottom line: Viewed as part of a very long argument over what government should or should not do for masses of Americans, today’s demonstrations and the irrational claims they sometimes purvey should be no surprise. Logic has rarely been central to this very emotional debate.

Charlyne didn’t have the pennies, but she saved up bread wrappers from all over the neighborhood. When she got to the airfield, Wiley told her she was too little for the seat belt, so, Charlyne asked if her cousin could ride with her. Wiley said yes, and, thanks to her cousin sharing the seat, she got her very first airplane ride. That was when Charlyne became ‘hooked on flying!’ During WWII, she worked at Douglas Aircraft as a Production Control Booth Expeditor which, according to Charlyne, was just a fancy title that meant she counted the screws. She learned to fly in Norman, Oklahoma, and had to get special permission to leave her necessary war job to apply for WASP training. When the Douglas people told her no, because she was important to their production line, she told them that they either let her leave or she would quit, because whether they liked it or not, she was going to fly for her country. She entered WASP training in 1944 and graduated as a member of the very last class of WASP to graduate: 44-W-10. She was stationed at Waco Army Air Field as an engineering test pilot, and after the WASP disbanded, worked as a salvage pilot and flight instructor, but eventually,

Weekly, the State requirements relaxed to allow SLO County to self-certify with an attestation, which was approved last week. The clearance allowed SLO County to open up in-store restaurants and retail. California’s new change allows all counties to make independent decisions about in-store retail without attesting. The State also relaxed restrictions for places of worship over the weekend. The new guidelines allow for places of worship to host 25 percent of their capacity or a maximum of 100 persons.

Knife Wielding Robber Attempts Second Heist Using Note ARMED ROBBERY STAFF REPORT ATASCADERO — On Thursday, May 21 at 1:52 p.m., Atascadero police officers responded to Aegis Medical Systems, 6500 Morro Rd., for a report of a suspicious subject. Employees reported a subject entered the business and attempted to obtain medication by providing a false name. As APD units were arriving on the scene, dispatch received a call from an alarm company reporting a robbery in progress at that location. Officers located the suspect as he was exiting the business and were able to take him into custody without incident. While conducting the investiga-

tion, APD officers learned that the suspect had entered the business and attempted to obtain medication by providing a false name. When confronted about the fictitious name, the suspect produced a note stating it was a robbery. The suspect was identified as Kyle Walls, a 21-year-old male resident of Atascadero. Walls was recently arrested by APD on May 6, 2020, for committing a robbery at Chalk Mountain Liquor. During that incident, Walls was armed with a knife and slashed at the employee when confronted. Walls was arrested for that incident and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail for Robbery, Assault with a Deadly

Weapon, Drawing/Exhibiting a Deadly Weapon and Vehicle Theft. Walls posted bail for these charges and was subsequently released from custody. After the incident, Walls was placed under arrest for Robbery and Committing a Felony while Out on Bail. Since Walls had bailed on the previous case and was involved in another robbery, APD Detectives submitted a bail enhancement to the San Luis Obispo Superior Court. The enhancement was granted, and bail was increased from $50,000 to $100,000. Walls was then booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail. This incident is still under investigation.

STAFF REPORT ATASCADERO — On Thursday, May 21, at 7:32 p.m., Atascadero police officers responded to Subway, 2290 El Camino Real, for an armed robbery that had just occurred. Upon arrival, APD officers learned that the suspect had fled the scene in what was described as a newer model white Toyota sedan. The vehicle was described as having a spoiler and tinted windows. An employee was interviewed and said the suspect entered the business, lifted his shirt enough to reveal a firearm in his waistband. The suspect demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as a white male adult wearing a mask, brown and yellow flannel shirt, and blue jeans. This incident is still under investigation by the Atascadero Police Department.

Serial Evader Apprehended Following Multi-Car Crash in Paso Robles STAFF REPORT PASO ROBLES — PRPD bring in wanted man, rescue woman from vehicle On Sunday, May 24, 2020, at approximately 8:25 a.m., officers from the Paso Robles Police Department saw a vehicle driving recklessly eastbound on the Niblick Bridge. The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Ivan Sandoval Farias, lost control of his vehicle and collided with two other vehicles in the intersection located in the 100 Niblick, in front of Walmart. Occupants of the other involved vehicles had minor to moderate injuries, and one motorist was trapped in

her car because of the collision. She was rescued by responding officers and the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services. Sandoval fled the scene on foot but was caught by officers who took him into custody. At the time of his arrest, Sandoval Farias was on Probation, had a suspended license and was in possession of methamphetamines. He was booked into custody for possession of narcotics, Felony Hit and Run, Felony DUI-Drugs, Driving on a suspended license, and a probation violation. A $500,000.00 bail enhancement was authorized due to the totality of the circumstances. SandovalFarias is a person of interest

good news as Atascadero Middle School Principal Jessica Lloyd addressed the board. Last fall, Principal Lloyd came before the board and gave a presentation explaining how the middle school was in the application process for an award from the California League Of Middle Schools as a “School to Watch.” “Our application was well-received, which prompted a site visit to Atascadero Middle School,” Lloyd said in the session. “This was an exciting day for us; we had educators from across the state come and visit us and talk to our staff and talk to our kids.” The middle school set up an artifact room, made a video for the representatives from CLMS and brought in the community to showcase the Atascadero charm. In January, the middle school was officially recognized as a California middle school to watch. “We were selected as one of nine middle schools in California,” Lloyd explained. “So Atascadero Middle School is officially on the map, and I could not be more proud of our staff and our kids and the partnerships we have created.” Atascadero Middle School was selected and will be used as an example for other schools across the state for three primary reasons, the school’s sixth-grade model, culture and the intervention program called “Saints Block.” Sixth-grade teacher Denise Moore was also nominated and recognized by the California League of Middle Schools as one of the top teachers not only in San Luis Obispo Coastal District but also in California for her work with the sixth-grade model. Following the presentation, the session switched to public comments on items not listed on the agenda, and the public took this time to express their displeasure and explain their reasons for keeping the recently cut “Intro to Sports Medicine” course at Atascadero High School. The calls came from students, employees in the District, and head athletic trainers from other schools in the county such as Templeton and Arroyo Grande urging the board to bring back the program as soon as possible. The “Introduction to Sports Medicine” class has been at the high school for more than 20 years and has helped turn many Greyhound students to the medical field but will not return in 2021 due to the current effects of the coronavirus on AUSD’s budget. “The program wasn’t cut because the program wasn’t beneficial or because it wasn’t running well,” Atascadero Principal Bill Neely said Wednesday. “Cierra Boots did a great job and is great to the students and is a fantastic trainer, but it was ultimately a fiscal decision that had to be made.” Following the public comments, Atascadero Superintendent Tom Butler addressed the board and wanted to thank the classified staff in the District for their work serving 2,500 meals a week and cleaning classrooms in preparation for the return of students. Butler went on to address graduation and stated that a newsletter would be going out to everyone in the coming days to outline the proceedings for the high school graduation on June 3, 2020. agenda items, Butler then addressed the board regarding COVID-19 updates for this year and the plans for the upcoming fall. The District has received 120 internet hot spots to help with distance learning and 470 additional chrome books through some state funding that was recently made available. Unfortunately, the devices will be arriving at the end of the school year. Still, they can be used to help students in special education who have expanded curriculum throughout the summer and can be implemented next year for everyone. The District also claimed to have made over 50 home visits from principals, administrators and resource officers in the last week to help parents and monitor students. “These were students we were concerned about because they were not checking in with us regularly,” Butler said. “We were going out to primarily help parents, and what we found was most of the support they needed was just in utilizing the technology effectively.” Lastly, Butler reiterated that the District will be ready to start school in the Fall on August 12, if permitted by California and Governor Newsom. The District has organized three separate plans for the fall due to the uncertainty that looms in the future. AUSD has a plan in place for school to return in a traditional way of learning, and one built entirely on distance learning and a third than blends the two together with a combination of in-person and online education for the students. “We are committed to our August 12 start of school date,” Butler said. “We will be ready to start school on August 12.” In closing, new Atascadero High School Principal Dan Andrus joined the session with current Principal Neely stating that Atascadero High School would be moving away from the eight-period alternating block schedule that has been in place at the high school for decades and will be moving to a seven-period daily schedule. The main criteria for the change was the flexibility it provides next year, especially surrounding all the uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic. “A majority of our departments agreed that it was prudent to move to a seven-period per day schedule,” Neely said to the board. “Now, that provides lots of opportunities, there are pro’s and con’s of any schedule, but at this point, it seems most prudent to move to the seven-period schedule because it provides us with the flexibility to respond to whatever our situation may be on August 12.” The main difference between an alternating eight-period block schedule and a seven-period daily is that every student will attend every class each day, meaning the class times will be shorter, and no study hall is offered. “We are very conscientious in supporting our students,” Andrus said. “With the absence of study hall, there are some support classes we want to work in, and we want to be flexible to give support during the school day and after the school day.” Minimal details were provided as the District is still in the logistical process of setting up the schedules and is working with department heads, administrators, and teachers to find the best solution possible. The next AUSD board meeting is scheduled for June 2, 2020, at 11 a.m.

mater. The group featured high school seniors from around the county that were being “adopted” by parents, teachers, community members, and local businesses. Orosco quickly looked up San Luis Obispo County, to see if we had anything like it and realized there was not. She spoke to a few friends, and the response she received was excited and supportive. So she launched the Facebook Group “Adopt a High School Senior 2020 San Luis Obispo County.” With a “Friends” like theme for a logo and the saying “Seniors 2020, The One Where They Were Quarantined,” the group began to receive some attention. First, from friends and family and then it started to spread like wildfire. When Orosco started the group, she had no idea how many people would jump on board and get involved. “We have retired teachers, local business, and community members adopting our seniors from all areas of the county,” she said. “It is a way we can all share our love and support. Some of these kids may be the first in their families to graduate, or go off to college, walking in your cap and gown is a big deal, and that is why I knew I had to do something.”

Orosco does not have a senior in high school, but she and her husband are very involved in the local school district by helping with non-profit organizations and PTA’s. She herself has adopted ten different seniors and will continue to do more. “The most important part of all of this is to let these kids know that they are supported, and we are all behind them during this time.” As we all continue to walk through this pandemic, Orosco’s number one goal is to provide a space that offers hope and joy. “This is a hard time, there is nothing to look forward to, but in this group, it is all positive, no negative. I look forward to waking up and checking the feed to see who posted a video or what student was adopted or who still needs adopting,” she shared with us. Orosco and the 2800 plus members have adopted over 500 seniors from around the county, and she is hoping to hit 1000 by June 3. So, what does it mean to “adopt” a senior? A parent or guardian may add their senior to the group by posting a photo along with details about their personality, achievements, school, community involvement, and future goals. The student is then tagged with an “adopt” button that allows community members to see their profiles and adopt them if they

Contributed photo are able. “We made a rule that each child is only allowed to be adopted once; that way, every student has the ability to be adopted,” Orosco said. She continued, “once the student is adopted, the adopter and parent set up a time to “surprise” the student by arranging a visit. These visits maintain social distancing and safety for both parties. They are filled with love and laughter, and you can see the pure joy on the student’s face, and that is how I know we are making a difference.” “This is a joint community effort,” Orosco said, “I am just hosting the page and trying to do my part in all this. It is an honor to see the community come together and support our youth during this time. We are making long-lasting

her disappearance peaked to new heights, and amid the shelter-at home, the case continues to be on everyone’s mind. Monday evening, a “Cruise for Kristin” was formed to honor her memory. They drove through the Arroyo Grande’s Village, down Grand Avenue, through Pismo Beach on Highway 1, and ended at Smart’s memorial in Shell Beach. The group was decorated in purple, Smart’s favorite color, while local musicians played some of Smart’s favorite songs that were requested from Denise Smart, Kristin’s mom. People shared their stories of hope and love while still taking into consideration social distancing. Chris Lambert, the creator and host of the viral podcast “Your Own Backyard,” has not yet released a follow up to his episode 7, The Iceberg, that was published on January 29. However, that one was packed full of new information. Following that podcast, several warrants were served to the various homes of the Flores family. Since then, we are all still waiting to see what the outcome of those will be. In 2017, after 21 years, the Smart family decided to turn this tragedy into something that would honor their beloved daughter’s memory. The Kristin Smart Scholarship was formed to help other young women pursue their dreams in architecture and international relations, which were both passions of Smarts. In addition to those the scholarships, it also focusses on young woman that are interested in perusing a degree in law enforcement and/or forensic science. The Smart family stated on their website that they noticed that women are critically underrepresented in law enforcement. And according to the grant applicant description, “a woman’s perspective, insight, and intuition are said to help better keep the peace while building safer

Women in forensic science are often the key to bringing justice to victims and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Our hope is that no other family will have to endure 24 years without answers or justice.”

relationships for years to come, and my hope is that the students continue to share their updates and life as they go off to college or get their first job, so we can continue to support them as they grow.” Orosco said that she will keep the group going through the end of June and then transition it into something everyone can follow the progress of the students that have adopted. She is not sure what that will look like and will focus on that later on, but for now, she will continue to do her best in making sure every student that wants to be adopted is with the help of our incredible community. As we walked through another anniversary of Smart’s disappearance and she is still missing, the hope shared by many is that this will be the year that the Sheriff ’s office can bring closure and justice for Kristin.
