Juvenile prisoners to be housed at facility in Malibu hills Dozens convicted of violent crimes to be residents of Camp Kilpatrick starting May 1 By JUDY ABEL Special to The Malibu Times
Juvenile offenders, some deemed “violent,” will start being housed at Camp Kilpatrick located in the hills above Malibu beginning May 1. Despite pushback from Malibu residents, City Councilperson Karen Farrer and the Las Virgenes-Malibu Council of Governments, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted last week to relocate the offenders, ages 14 through 25, due to the impending closure of California’s Division of Juvenile Justice. Under Senate Bill 92, counties will now be tasked with the burden of housing and rehabilitating youth offenders. LACO youth who would have been sent
to the DJJ would have been held at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar; however, that facility was deemed by state regulators as “unsuitable for the confinement of youth” with deplorable conditions. When the BOS considered moving inmates to Santa Clarita, residents there were vocal about relocating young men to their community who have been convicted of violent assaults and murder. That’s when Kilpatrick was considered as a site. Doug Stewart, vice chairman of Malibu’s Public Safety Commission, called it a “stealth move” on the part of the BOS that claims plans to house more inmates at Camp Kilpatrick has been in the works since mid2021. Farrer said she first got wind of the plan at the beginning of March and motioned the City Council to send a letter in opposition to the BOS. On March 14, her motion failed to pass. Pepperdine Waves men’s golfer Dylan Menante is playing perhaps the best golf of his college career. The junior from Carlsbad won his second successive golf tournament on April 13, two days after he was named the West Coast Conference’s Golfer of the Month. Menante finished in first place at the 75th annual Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz. He was the only player in the 90-person field to finish
below par, with a 1-under 209 (70-72-67). Menante said winning the three-day event wasn’t easy. “This week was one of the toughest challenges of golf that I’ve ever played with greens, slops, and an Alister MacKenzie design up to four to five degrees,” he said. “There aren’t many flat spots, and with the wind and potential rain in the first round, it was quite a challenge.” Menante became the second straight Pepperdine golfer to snag the West Intercollegiate’s trophy and famed blue letterman’s jacket that is given to the winner. Senior Joe Highsmith won the spectacle in 2021. Menante is also the first Wave ever to win backto-back tournaments in nearly three decades. The CONTINUED ON PAGE A8

A popular internet platform has recognized a local woman as The Malibu Small Business Award winner for 2022. Barbara Jean Carey was honored by Alignable.com, a platform similar to LinkedIn, but designed for small businesses. Alignable allows small businesses to connect with one another in an effort to support each other’s businesses. “It’s a great, cool platform because everybody just wants to help,” Carey said about the internet site. Alignable canvassed its members in different cities to determine which small businesses have helped their communities especially during the difficulties operating
during the pandemic. “Next thing I know I got a notice I was nominated,” a flabbergasted Carey told The Malibu Times. “I was surprised. Next thing you know I got a congratulations, saying your colleagues and peers in the city of Malibu in the small business community voted you as Malibu’s business person of the year. Wow I was honored.” Carey’s business is called The Confident Mind. She is a certified hypnotherapist, neuro linguistic programming practitioner, life coach, and relationship specialist. Carey specializes in combating addictions. She practices at Seasons Recovery Center Malibu and also at her own private practice on Pacific Coast Highway near Las Flores. Carey helps clients overcome addictions and relieving mental health stresses. The Malibu resident of nearly 40 years has been practicing locally for 17 years. “I like to work with clients that
are willing to help themselves by going deeper," she said. "Clients that are willing to let go of these false self-limiting beliefs that are being held in their subconscious mind. Clients that will allow themselves to step into their authentic selves and live a life of health, wealth, happiness, success, and love.” Carey described her work saying, “I bypass the conscious mind. I bypass the critical mind and I go into the subconscious mind to figure out what is being held in there to keep creating these unwanted beliefs, behaviors, patterns, and then we switch it out because the subconscious mind that was formed between zero and 8 years old will not allow me to take anything out without replacing it with something else.” This reporter has personally seen Carey’s compassion at work.
