a habit out of targeting Gaither early and often. The Spartans opened the season against the Air Force Academy, but Starkel and Gaither controlled the skies connecting for eight receptions and 110 yards. SJSU would win the game 17-6. In the second game of the season, Gaither etched his name in the records books. Playing at home in an empty stadium, the six-foot-

PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles and Atascadero Chambers of Commerces hosted the fifth annual State of the North County event virtually on Dec. 10. The virtual conference featured community updates from Mayor Steve Martin of Paso Robles and Mayor Heather Moreno of Atascadero. Mayor Martin opened his community update by transporting attendees to a “Twilight Zone” spinoff named the “Reimagination Zone.” Of course, this was related to the alternate universe created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Martin went over challenges Paso faced before and after COVID in various categories like street repairs, local economy, housing, and homelessness. The recently passed tax measure J-20 is set to prioritize fire, police, and street repairs. The Grandview Apartments have been refurbished and are ready to be rented, increasing housing in the city. Before COVID, there was no homeless shelter in Paso Robles. Martin said this led many to seek shelter in the Salinas Riverbed, leading to numerous fires and water contamination issues. Thanks to organizations like the El Camino Homeless Organization, part of Motel 6 in Paso Robles will be a homeless shelter. Since COVID started, it became evident that employment opportunities in Paso Robles were primarily tourism-driven. Not ideal in a world where stay-at-home orders have stalled tourism. Thus telling Martin Paso Robles needs to diversify its employment opportunities. How this will be done is still up in the air. When it comes to the City’s budget, Paso Robles plans to cut $14 million over the next two years and add $11 million to the reserve over the next two years. Overall, Mayor Martin remained optimistic that Paso Robles will return to its pre-COVID bliss. “We are still can do. We are still too cool,” said Martin. For the future, Martin sees Paso Robles as a “sleeker cooler city, and the return of tourism, but we will need to diversify our job base.” Martin brought the audience

By CAMILLE DeVAUL camille@pasoroblespress.com PASO ROBLES - After 43 years, Noel Ryan, branch manager of Paso Robles Farm Supply, retires today, Dec. 31. It’s not a secret that Noel Ryan is an essential member of the Farm Supply family. He is known for his integrity, American values, compassion, and so much more. Ryan is also too humble to admit to any of these flattering attributes. Susan Hayes, the current assistant branch manager, said, “He leads by example. He’s not above doing anything-I can count on him. He has mentored me tremendously.” Ryan feels it is time for him to retire and let a new

generation begin at Farm Supply. “I tell people that I’ve been a part-time resident of Creston for 43 years, now I’m going to go home,” Ryan shared. However, Ryan’s story doesn’t begin in Creston or America for that matter. Ryan and his brother Mike were born in Ireland and adopted in 1952 when Ryan was two years old. His parents brought the boys back to their hometown of Creston, where they eventually attended school in the two-room schoolhouse. Ryan laughed, saying, “I’m one of the luckiest Irishman alive.” Later on, Ryan graduated from Paso Robles High School and then attended Cuesta Community CONTINUED ON PAGE A16

SAN JOSE — Thursday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m., the undefeated San Jose State University (SJSU) Spartans football team will take the field for the final time in 2020 to face Ball State (6-1) in the Arizona Bowl. The Spartans are the lone undefeated team west of the Mississippi and have rolled to 7-0 on the strength of their offense that is averaging 30 points per game. Two years ago, the SJSU offense ran through former Paso Robles Bearcat Josh Oliver, who was eventually drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. This season the Spartans are again led by another legendary Bearcat as Bailey Gaither leads the team in receptions and has climbed his way close to the top of all the school’s major receiving records. While playing his home games at War Memorial Stadium, Gaither recorded more than 40 touchdowns and amassed more than 3,000 yards receiving and has continued the prolific output at the Division I level and has helped SJSU rise to the no. 22 ranked team in the nation, the first time they have been inside the top 25 since 2012. Gaither committed to SJSU in 2015 and paid his dues while making his way up the depth chart. The former Bearcat standout showed flashes of the speed that made him

such a nightmare in high school during his first few years but revealed his blazing acceleration to the nation his junior year, hauling in 52 passes for 812 yards and six touchdowns. Gaither finished the season as a Mountain West Honorable mention, but, unfortunately, the Spartans finished only 5-7 in 2019. 2020 brought the Spartans a new quarterback in former Texas A&M gunslinger Nick Starkel, who, after bouncing around, has found a home in San Jose, that has made
