As we move into this fall’s session, we are thrilled to open our doors to more students looking to both explore their creativity and express themselves through art making. While we are optimistic about our ability to invite more art makers into our classrooms, we continue to proceed with care and caution. With that in mind, this semester again brings two different types of studio arts offerings from Bemis: a select number of virtual classes for those who enjoy creating remotely and small group, in-person classes (between 3 and 10 students each) for those folks who are ready to join others in our studio classrooms. We hope to see you soon and welcome back to Bemis School of Art!

PROGRAMS VIRTUAL: Bemis School of Art is continuing to offer virtual course and workshop programming during the fall 2021 session. Instructors will teach a variety of mediums at all levels using Zoom video conferencing platform, prerecorded video content, and other virtual tools. Virtual courses may offer live Zoom studio hours in addition to live Zoom course instruction to provide students with time to work on course projects while the instructor is available to offer personalized feedback and assistance. In order to participate in virtual courses, students will need access to a computer or smartphone with video and audio capabilities, and an internet connection.

IN-PERSON: The fall 2021 session includes limited capacity, in-person, community and semiprivate courses and workshops in a variety of mediums at the Bemis School of Art. Community courses will allow for up to 10 community members per course, and the semiprivate workshops are open to small groups for personalized instruction. COVID-19 STATEMENT As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to be ever-present across the nation, it is Bemis School of Art’s priority to protect the health and safety of our patrons, staff, and community. In doing so, we are offering a limited number of in-person courses and will continue virtual programming this fall to further prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a result, our programs may look a little different this session.

Whatever your artistic interest, age, or skill level, the Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art has classes to drive your passions. Build community with other artists while exploring and developing your artistic skills. Youth – Arts education cultivates the entire child, developing literacy, intuition, reasoning, imagination, and dexterity while allowing space for creative expression. To provide quality art education, the Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art applies the Colorado Model Content Standards for Visual Arts to all youth classes. Adult – Adult courses range in experience level from absolute beginner courses aimed at building fundamental skills and medium familiarity to advanced courses designed to allow experienced artists to hone their skills. Military – Thanks to grants and individual donations, Military Artistic Healing classes are offered in a variety of mediums at no charge to military veterans, active-duty military, and their families. Visiting Artists – We are proud to offer classes and workshops by visiting and regional professional artists. Past artists have included Cochiti Pueblo potter, Virgil Ortiz; Sundance award-winning filmmaker, Tom Shepard; Laguna Pueblo potter and poet, Max Early; and Loving Vincent painter and animator, Dena Peterson. Plein Air – This symbol designates a class that takes place outside ‘in the open air,’ not at the Bemis School of Art campus. Travel – This symbol designates a class that requires travel.

Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium.

Practice slab construction to hand build tantalizing mugs from textured clay slabs. Build several mugs that are three or four footed or darted with pedestals using simple measurements and flat patterns. Learn to apply glazes that relate to textured surfaces on your whimsical forms. You will not be able to resist filling your mugs with your favorite beverage! Supply list online. Ages 16–Adult

Learn slab construction to hand build a pleasing pitcher with whimsical forms using textured clay slabs. Move from flat to freestanding using simple measurements and flat patterns. Refine Your Black & White Darkroom Printing Skills Instructor: Angela Crews

Level 1 – This class is for those with some

familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of medium outside of the classroom. Spend three hours learning to refine your black and white darkroom printing skills with private instruction in contrast filters, split-filter printing, and/or cropping/positioning for artful presentations depending on the student’s skill level and goals. This darkroom experience will help you bring your printing skills to the next level and you will be encouraged to produce prints that you will be excited to enter in photography exhibitions and competitions. Clay Sculpture

This class is for young artists who have expressed a love for art and wish to create art projects free from typical restrictions in elementary school art classes. You will learn seven of the elements of art as well as the works of many famous artists. You will be guided to create a new art piece each day and spend the last days creating a final piece of your own design. Supplies will be provided.

While both reviewing and solidifying the aspects covered in Introduction to the Elements of Art, this course will introduce exciting new artists and projects. We will continue to create unique art pieces each day, as well as plan and implement your own designs for final projects. Supplies will be provided.

Getting your hands dirty and building things out of clay is a wonderful experience. Starting with a few basic construction techniques, this class quickly branches out to include several non-standard ones, too: fast fossil, thixotropic, dynamic oxidation, and at least one that will be created/ discovered by this class halfway through the session. No experience needed. Supplies will be provided.

Finding your Voice! SelfExpression for Teens Instructor: Jasmine Dillavou

This workshop uses several creative activities to unlock your expressive voice through your art! Zine making and blackout poetry are just two ways we will dive into finding your own unique narrative and learning how to assert power through your creative endeavors. In addition, you will be provided with links to virtual content to explore on your own time outside of class if you so choose. Painting the Seasons: Autumn

Have you ever wondered what makes a good abstract painting? Are you curious about how to begin? These questions and more will be answered in this class. Strong abstract designs are the key to making any painting successful, even realistic ones. Discover the qualities of a strong abstract painting as well as several ways to create abstraction. Explore and experiment with creating abstract paintings in a safe and fun environment. Come with an open mind and a playful attitude! Paint the vibrant, warm colors of autumn. Nature is a gold mine of inspiration—what better way to explore its countless variations than painting the seasons. Autumn colors provide rich inspiration for the landscape painter and this workshop will give you an opportunity to discover how to use opaque and transparent colors to express the glow of autumn leaves as wells as the nuances of foreground greens. Drink in the intoxicatingly beautiful landscape of the Good Hope Plantation in Trelawny, Jamaica. Enjoy the fabulous accommodations at Good Hope’s Coach House Villa and immerse yourself in a truly incredible creative experience. Lodging and tuition fees include eight days of accommodations and seven days of hands-on classes taught by four instructors, all ground transportation, meals, taxes, gratuity, and yoga classes tailored to our needs as working artists. Enchanted Textures of Taos, New Mexico Instructor: Martha Mans Level II–IV This plein air water-media workshop takes place in and around the historic town of Taos, New Mexico. In 1915, Taos became famous as the home of the Taos Society of Artists and has remained an artist’s mecca ever since. Our instructor Martha has also become enchanted with New Mexico and uses its light and textures as the subject of her watercolor and oil paintings. The chamisa, sage, and cottonwood trees against the rugged mountains and mesas make up the enticing landscape of northern New Mexico that she paints. In autumn, the textures and colors are especially glorious—experience this inspiring environment for yourself! Martha will provide instruction in water-based media, including transparent watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, while you paint on-site in picturesque Taos. Improve your paintings with a greater understanding of elements of design, including employing rhythm in landscape painting and leading the viewer through the painting by providing a point of interest. Add strength to your composition using light, midtones, and rich darks. Learn how to achieve rich color using paint-to-water ratio. Supply list online. Adults. Ink Play: Drawing & Layers – Mono & Relief Prints Instructor: Kathryn Romberg

Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium.

You will play with ink in order to discover what it can do and how to mix with other media. While monoprinting technically means only one copy, these techniques will allow you to use and reuse your drawings to create interesting multiple prints. You will move on to relief prints starting with Styrofoam and moving to a wellplanned linoleum block. Learn to connect printmaking and drawing together. Supply list online. Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium. Experience a variety of art-making processes to find your creative niche using fabulous materials! Explore artful compositions in watercolor, collage, fabric collage, printmaking, pastel painting, simple bookmaking, mixing media and more. Color, Texture and Surface Design

Work on surfaces of Tyvek, prepared boards, and papers while discovering processes in Citra Solv marbling, historic paste paper, out of the box collage using image transfers, gelli printmaking, stenciling and more. We will layer colorants applied to surfaces such as inks, paints, and pastels to create visually texture to our unique compositions. Use materials in new and exciting ways! 20 Prompts for Two Paintings: Learning to Create Free of Fear

Instructor: Laura Raborn

Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of medium outside of the classroom. Many of us let fear or a need for perfection halt our artistic endeavors. This fast-paced mixed media workshop will interrupt the tendency to overthink and will allow artists to break free of their inner critic. The curriculum includes various techniques such as stencil, collage, image transfer, and drawn line. Using timed prompts, we will alternate between two paintings and learn tricks that allow artists to use both skill and spontaneity. Supply list online. Words Matter When Language Becomes Art

Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Student should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium.

Study a variety of ways to include language in visual art in this thought-provoking class. The words can be a background, create a subtle message, be a graphic element or pattern, or become the central element of the artwork. We will look at contemporary artists who use language in their work. We will explore Christopher Wool, Barbara Kruger, and Jenny Holzer as well as looking back at how the Dadaists used language in their powerful collages. By discussing contemporary and historical use of words as art, students will not only learn how—but also why—to use text in their art making. Supply list online. Ages 16–Adult

In the first half of the day, we will experiment with an extensive list of mark making tools to create unique collage papers. We will test ink, colored pencil, oil pastel, charcoal, ball point pen, and markers—just to name a few. Because we are playing, and not focused on a “perfect” piece of art, the use of materials is relaxing and fun. In the afternoon we will use our altered papers and arrange the pieces in a variety of abstract collages. Supply list online. Ages 16–Adult

You will be introduced to the process of artistic needlework, learning to get more comfortable with the technique and discovering ways to problem-solve. We will start with basic exercises, learn color blending, shading, drawing lines, and other fundamental embroidery techniques. With support of the instructor, you will be encouraged to sketch design ideas from your imagination, photos, or natural surroundings, which will serve as a basis for your final piece of work. Learn the techniques the professionals use to design, create, and finish earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Create unique pieces to enhance your wardrobe, give as gifts, or create jewelry to sell. You will also learn techniques to repair vintage favorites to be worn again or revamp them into something new. Supply List online. Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium. In the past, amulet bags have been used to hold meaningful items such as amulet stones, crystals, and healing herbs. In modern times, amulet necklaces are fun, and can still be used to hold small, meaningful items. Challenge your inner creativity and learn how to stitch a beaded bag necklace using the tubular netted stitch, and seed beads. Learn to problem solve: if there is a mistake in color or technique, do you leave it, or take out? Is there another creative solution? Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of medium outside of the classroom.

Discover techniques to inspire creative skills and gain greater self–awareness. Explore possibilities, develop your creativity, and gain personal insight through working with a variety of controllable mediums. There are many benefits to using art to express emotions: art can furnish a healthy outlet and an alternate way to communicate something that one cannot always put into words. The art can provide safe containment for emotions that are expressed and reflecting on the art can give new understanding and insight about feelings. Visual thinking strategies will be used to increase group cohesion. Supplies will be provided. Adult

Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Student should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium.

Large beads, bold colors, and simple designs make a striking statement with this right-angle weave beaded bracelet. The RAW method works well with large crystal rondelles and creates a flower-like center that can be bold or subtle, depending on the bead colors used. The method is repetitive, but has some complicated steps, so previous beading experience is helpful, and recommended for this class. By taking a ball of clay through the ceramic process to create a permanent object, this class will help one gain an appreciation for this special medium and its important properties. A beginner’s guide to hand building clay, this course covers traditional and not-so-traditional building techniques to create by hand. A variety of texturing and glazing techniques will also be covered, while celebrating individual style and interests. Supply list online. Adult

Create a pitcher and platter set that expresses your personal uniqueness! Learn basic slab construction techniques to hand build plant or animal themed platters using templates, texturing tools and textured leaf molds. Then move on to the more complex process of building a pitcher using textured slabs and flat pattern templates. Under glazing, staining, and overglazing will be taught to suit this project. A continuation of Hand Building in Clay I, although new students are welcome to join. Advanced methods of building by hand will be taught. Learn a variety of methods in hand formed ceramics to gain confidence in the material. Larger forms, lidded objects with additions, and funky techniques will be brought into this course. Learn the basic functions of your camera and how classic compositional rules apply to photography. Discover how to bring together the elements of manual mode to create intriguing images using shutter speed, aperture, and which ISO to use in different lighting situations. HOW TO REGISTER Please read all registration procedures and related policies carefully. You may register online or by phone. Full payment is due upon enrollment. Checks, cash, money orders, and all major credit cards are accepted. Registration should be made as soon as possible. Class size is limited and spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Full classes are indicated online and will be communicated via email or over the phone.

Search all of our available classes using key words, course code numbers, class mediums, age group, instructor, or day of the week. Click on the class you’d like to register for to read the full description; review date, time, and location information; download your supply list, and add the class to your cart. Then, simply click Proceed to Checkout to complete our registration form and process payment.

Call the Bemis School of Art at (719) 475-2444 during registration office hours, Monday through Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. with the course name(s), number(s), and method of payment to register over the phone. Registration implies the responsible party understands the course levels below and has self-selected a course or courses that match their skill level. If Bemis identifies a student enrolling for a class below their skill level they may be asked to withdraw and/or switch into a course that’s a better match.

POLICIES & WAIVERS Registration implies the responsible party understands and agrees to the following policies and waivers. All students must follow COVID-19 precautions outlined on the Fine Arts Center visit guideline webpage, to participate in in-person courses and workshops. Additionally, we ask that you arrive for in-person classes on time and promptly leave when class ends. Please do not enter Bemis School of Art buildings until your class begins. No additional visitors are permitted in the buildings at this time.

POLICIES General

• The Fine Arts Center at Colorado College’s Bemis School of Art (henceforth, Bemis School of Art) reserves the right to change class instructors when necessary. • Disorderly conduct or misbehavior while on Colorado College grounds or participating in a virtual course will not be allowed and may result in suspension from class(es). • Suspension due to misconduct does not release the student/parent from financial obligation to Bemis School of Art. • No pets are allowed on campus. Service animals are welcome. • Bemis School of Art reserves the right to refuse enrollment to participants with a history of unacceptable behavior. • Parents must arrive to pick up their children on time. A childcare fee may be assessed for children waiting for more than 15 minutes. • Bemis School of Art does not prorate tuition. • Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make-up classes will be given for absences. • Use of studios for commercial production work is prohibited. • Bemis School of Art studios are reserved for the use of registered students during class time only. • Bemis School of Art parking spaces are reserved for the use of registered students during class time only. • Enrollment in class does not guarantee a space in the Bemis School of Art lot. Please use street parking as needed.

VIRTUAL POLICIES Students registered for virtual courses are expected to conduct themselves as if participating in an on-site Bemis course. As a virtual course registrant, Bemis asks that you please be aware of your surroundings during virtual class sessions. Ensure your Zoom camera background is simple and clear of any foot traffic, including family members moving in and out of view, bright backlighting, or anything else that would be distracting to fellow students and the instructor. If need be, you can choose to turn off your camera in Zoom and turn it back on when you’re ready.

Withdrawals and Transfers

• Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make-up classes will be given for absences. • Notice of withdrawal must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 475-2444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class. • No refunds will be given to participants who elect to withdraw from a class once it has begun. • Failure to attend sessions or notification to the instructor will not be regarded as an official notice of withdrawal. • There is a $10 withdrawal fee for Fine Arts Center members and a $20 withdrawal fee for non-members. • Request for a course transfer must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 475-2444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class. • Participants may transfer classes one time per semester. Each additional course transfer will incur a $10 transfer fee. • Checks returned are not honored for any reason and will be subject to a $15 NSF charge and subject to prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

Cancellation

The Bemis School of Art reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes. If it is necessary to cancel a class for any reason, all registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and given the opportunity to transfer into another class. If a participant does not wish to transfer into another class, they may instead opt to receive a letter of credit to use toward any future Bemis School of Art course or a refund in the method in which they originally paid (card, cash, or check).

WAIVERS Publicity Waiver

Unless informed otherwise in writing, the Bemis School of Art considers photographs taken of students and their artwork to be permissible for publication in Colorado College, Fine Arts Center, and Bemis School of Art informational and promotional publications, including websites and social media.

Medical Care Waiver In the event of illness or injury, the staff of the Bemis School of Art will act as the agent in obtaining medical care for registered students and have permission to contact the participant’s emergency contact(s) on file.

VIRTUAL WAIVER By registering for a Bemis School of Art virtual course, you are acknowledging that instructors and fellow students of said course may be able to view everything in the line of sight of all shared camera video during live Zoom sessions. Virtual courses may be recorded for quality assurance and promotional publications, including websites and social media.
