CONTENTS

For many, this past year brought on a fierce case of cabin fever. As summer approaches, our traditional enjoyment of everyday activities in the great Colorado outdoors feels like a long-awaited gift. We weathered this storm together, we’ve been creative about staying connected in these unprecedented circumstances, and we’re energized and excited for the future with plans for the return of in-person studio arts classes, workshops, plein air painting and drawing, and our popular Art & Acting in the Forest camps at the La Foret Conference and Retreat Center in Black Forest.

We continue our dedication to providing community access to the arts in a range of formats to match individual comfort level, from continued virtual offerings to private and semiprivate sessions and in-person opportunities with the appropriate risk reducing measures in place. Our talented teaching artists are thrilled at the thought of getting back to the classroom with you all. It’s been a long time coming, but with new approaches to our practices and processes we’re embracing the opportunities of each new day. Also, we hope you’ll make plans to join us this summer for the FAC’s newly launched program: City as a Venue. It’s a summer-long celebration of the arts with theatrical performances, dance, music, site-specific experiences, interactive pop-up type opportunities, hands-on art activities from Bemis and more, presented in a variety of locations across the city!

Virtual – Bemis School of Art is continuing virtual course and workshop programming through the summer 2021 session. Instructors will teach a variety of mediums at all levels using Zoom video conferencing platform, prerecorded video content, and other virtual tools. Virtual courses may offer live Zoom studio hours in addition to live Zoom course instruction to provide students with time to work on course projects while the instructor is available to offer personalized feedback and assistance. In order to participate in virtual courses, students will need access to a computer or smartphone with video and audio capabilities, and an internet connection.

These in-person offerings allow for one student or a limited number of students within the same household to receive personalized instruction in a variety of mediums. In doing so, we are offering a limited number of semiprivate in-person courses and will continue virtual programming this summer to further prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a result, our programs may look a little different this session.

FINE ARTS CENTER MEMBERSHIP Whatever your artistic interest, age, or skill level, the Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art has classes to drive your passions. Build community with other artists while exploring and developing your artistic skills. Youth – Arts education cultivates the entire child, developing literacy, intuition, reasoning, imagination, and dexterity while allowing space for creative expression. To provide quality art education, the Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art applies the Colorado Model Content Standards for Visual Arts to all youth classes. Adult – Adult courses range in experience level from absolute beginner courses aimed at building fundamental skills and medium familiarity to advanced courses designed to allow experienced artists to hone their skills. Military – Thanks to grants and individual donations, Military Artistic Healing classes are offered in a variety of mediums at no charge to military veterans, active-duty military, and their families. Visiting Artists – We are proud to offer classes and workshops by visiting and regional professional artists. Past artists have included Cochiti Pueblo potter, Virgil Ortiz; Sundance award-winning filmmaker, Tom Shepard; Laguna Pueblo potter and poet, Max Early; and Loving Vincent painter and animator, Dena Peterson. Plein Air – This symbol designates a class that takes place outside ‘in the open air,’ not at the Bemis School of Art campus.

REGISTER NOW FOR BEMIS SUMMER 2021 DAY CAMPS AT LA FORET The FAC’s Bemis School of Art and La Foret Conference and Retreat Center present:

ART AND ACTING IN THE FOREST

Enjoy outstanding arts education with instructors from the FAC’s Bemis School of Art, set in the lush forest at 400-acre La Foret Conference and Retreat Center. The FAC’s partnership with La Foret has a long history. Alice Bemis Taylor, one of the three benefactresses of the Fine Arts Center, had her summer home at La Foret. The Taylor Memorial Chapel, built in 1929, was designed by the Fine Art Center’s architect, John Gaw Meem. Stretch your imagination! Experience a variety of artistic styles and techniques, including painting, printmaking, and mixed media art while exploring elements of composition and design. Explore your acting skills, voice, movement, and characterization with theater games, mime, and improvisation. Art and acting will come together on Fridays with a special showcase performance and art exhibit for friends and family. La Foret staff will provide swimming in the afternoon, so bring your swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen. Each student should bring a lunch and snack and should be prepared for a variety of activities and weather. No open-toed shoes or sandals. Students may arrive after 8:50 a.m. La Foret is a licensed childcare premises and requires several forms for your child’s protection (Camp Health Form and Certificate of Immunization). Some require a doctor’s signature. All of the forms must be completed and given to La Foret prior to the first day of camp. Your child cannot participate until the paperwork is received. More information regarding COVID-19 requirements/guidelines will be provided closer to day camp start dates. What is Cubism?

The Secret Garden

Cutting into Color

Have you ever viewed Picasso’s work and wondered what he was thinking? In this workshop, we will explore just that and begin creating in Picasso’s style of Cubism. This 20th-century art movement will inspire us as we paint simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and assemble a collage. This style shows many possible viewpoints of a person or an object all at once. Maximum number of students from the same household: 5

This class is inspired by the classic book, The Secret Garden, by Frances Burnett. Learn to draw the main character Mary Lennox, paint colorful blossoms with art tissue and acrylic paints, and collage the graffiti garden in an art journal format. Fun for the whole family! Matisse traded in his paint brush for a pair of scissors and you can, too! Explore collage using various layering techniques as Matisse did. Use found, prepared, and altered papers of various textures along with paints and pastels to create fabulous out-of-the box compositions. YOUTH COURSES EXPRESSIONS OF SOCIAL CHANGE

In Collaboration with ArtivismCO

Artivism Colorado serves as the intersection of art and activism, teaching young artists to think like activists and to share their messages and expressions of social change through art. Students will be taught to use their creativity to raise awareness, mobilize, and inspire others. Bemis has joined with Artivism Colorado because we believe it is important that we teach our children to be critical thinkers who possess the power to think outside the box and have compassion for all of creation. The goal is not to influence any political opinions, but to create expressions of social change and develop strong individuals who become key players in their own future. With Artivism, young people are encouraged to explore art ideas that evoke emotions while investigating human, civil, animal, and environmental rights to produce change. They are empowered to discover their passions and find their voice in society.

About the Instructor: Lisa Villanueva, Founder, Artivism Colorado “Originally from Chicago, I am an eclectic, urban, Afrocentric artist. I work with many mediums, specializing in clay sculptures and the renovation of leather. I am an educator and youth and community activist by trade. I desire to uplift our future youth leaders through the arts. I designed a curriculum that fuses art and activism called Artivism. I created the Artivism classes to encourage and facilitate young people exploring art that invokes both emotions and change. As an activist myself, it is important I help others explore their passions in order to find their voice in what are ever-changing, often confusing societal norms.

Artivism Colorado is instrumental in dismantling hate and creating change agents. In our class time, we present human, civil, animal, and environmental rights issues in such a way to produce effective change. Artivism helps participants find their voices in society, because I truly believe our future depends on the change agents of the world.” Lisa now partners with Bemis School of Art and various community art organizations to facilitate Artivism Colorado. What is Cubism?

Painting & Collaging on Tyvek

Kids Clay

Tyvek is a plastic-like commercial building material. Repurposed, it is a fabulous pliable surface for collaging with papers, fibers, and painting. Using a simple heat method, we will create very unusually shaped and textured compositions on Tyvek. Collages can be perforated to add buttons or beads as well. Lots of experimental fun for the whole family! There is a $8 material fee per person payable to the instructor for supplies on the day of class. Maximum number of students from the same household: 5

Kids will have a chance to learn how to create ceramic objects using clay building techniques to complete a guided project. It is time to once again to raise the curtain on our youngest performers! Students will explore the magical world of theatre through games, rehearsals, and collaboration. Interactive instruction will have students dancing, acting, crafting and much more!

From finding a location to final production of the painted mural, learn how to talk with building owners, draft a proposal, and create concept drawings. Colorado College 2021 Summer Session Pre-College Program

Colorado College Summer Session invites rising high school juniors and seniors to join the CC community this summer. Enroll in one of our dynamic courses offered on subjects ranging from environmental science and the study of epidemics to marketing and entrepreneurship to cross-genre writing. CC’s summer session provides students with a rich opportunity to explore challenging academics, get inspired by the wondrous Rocky Mountain Region, and be supported by faculty that are invested in your success. High school students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rhythm of the Block Plan and experience living on Colorado College’s campus during our PreCollege Block, which is specially designed for ambitious high school students.

Introduction to Drawing: Landscape Immersion Instructor: Assistant Professor Kate Aitchison

In this class, students will explore introductory drawing techniques specifically in relation to the Colorado landscape. Emphasis will be on observational and technical drawing skills as we explore landscapes surrounding the Colorado Springs area, drawing outside on location. Students will gain fundamental skills by studying line, shape, value, and composition. These concepts will be explored using different mark-making tools, including charcoal, pencil, ink, and conte. Students will draw in the field from the landscape itself and in the classroom, learning technical concepts in a more controlled setting. Taking lessons from this multi-pronged approach, students will complete a portfolio of finished

Have you always wanted to learn to paint on location in the great outdoors? The key is learning how to simplify what you see. Strong paintings in the field require the elimination of detail and the ability to capture light. Learn how to bring light and texture into your paintings in a fun and supportive learning environment. Please note that this class level is for those with some experience in oil painting. Rich, transparent, and brilliant color are characteristics of drawing inks. Use them on the gorgeous surfaces of handmade papers and get a magnificent painting quickly and easily. We will plan simple compositions: trees in snow and springtime, lakes and rivers, mountains with clouds, and flowers spilling their colors off the edges. The works will be finished with a few lines made with a calligraphy pen and pearly powders for sparkle. This plein air water-media workshop takes place in and around the historic town of Taos, New Mexico. In 1915, Taos became famous as the home of the Taos Society of Artists and has remained an artist’s mecca ever since. Our instructor Martha has also become enchanted with New Mexico and uses its light and textures as the subject of her watercolor and oil paintings. The chamisa, sage, and cottonwood trees against the rugged mountains and mesas make up the enticing landscape of northern New Mexico that she paints. In autumn, the textures and colors are especially glorious— experience this inspiring environment for yourself! Martha will provide instruction in water-based media, including transparent watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, while you paint on-site in picturesque Taos. Improve your paintings with a greater understanding of elements of design, including employing rhythm in landscape painting and leading the viewer through the painting by providing a point of interest. ADULT COURSES THE HEALING POWER OF ART

An art therapist at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center’s Bemis School of Art, Kim Nguyen helps adults overcome trauma through creative expression. Published Aug. 30, 2016 Colorado Springs Style Magazine, by Linda Duval

Born in Vietnam, her mother was married at 15 and had Kim and her twin sister by the time she was 17 – and five kids in all by the time she was 30. Her parents migrated to South Vietnam when she was a child because they did not like living under Communist rule. Then, in April 1975, when Vietnam fell, her parents decided to escape from the country via a small fishing boat. Her father was conscripted into the Vietnamese Army, his salary barely enough to buy one bag of rice every payday. Her mom did other menial jobs so the family could survive. Wanting a better life for their family, they took months planning their escape from Communist rule. “We left Vietnam … with 25 people on that little boat,” she remembers. “The third day on the boat, it ran into a huge storm and the engine died. My father went up and tried to tie a blanket as a sail and he fell overboard. The waves were so huge, we saw him one minute and the next he was gone, swept away. We were all crying and mourning.” Nguyen was 13.

The boat just floated for several more days and landed ashore on Christmas Day — in Malaysia. A United Nations representative and the Red Cross helped them find new homes. The Nguyen family ended up in California. “We didn’t know anyone here” but their sponsors helped them find housing, clothes, furnishings and jobs. They helped them get green cards and got the children enrolled in school. Kim was a good student, but she didn’t find her calling until she took art classes. While getting her bachelor’s degree, she realized she was displaying her trauma on canvas. “I kept painting myself underground, or in a coffin,” she says. She aimed for an art education degree until one of the local art therapists came to class and talked about that field. “I said, ‘This is for me,’” she recalls, and went on to earn a master’s in art therapy. She came to Colorado in 1998 for a workshop “and I loved the weather.” She quickly found a job working with seniors, and eventually ended up at AspenPointe, a local outpatient mental health facility, in 2005. She teaches art therapy classes for them. A partnership between the facility and the Fine Arts Center got her working as an art therapist at the Bemis School of Art in 2009. When that partnership ended three years ago, she continued to volunteer at the school. She teaches one class for veterans and one for military families. Art therapy has helped Nguyen “release what was blocking me from being whole and balanced,” she says. “It is a way to tell my story without going into detail. The more you tell your story, the less power it has over you.” She is trained to interpret the art of others. “Sometimes they think I am psychic, but it’s all there in their art work. Words can mask (what’s really going on) but art doesn’t lie.” When she sees what art does for others, it also helps her heal, she adds. “When I tell soldiers I had PTSD, too, they come to believe that they also will find their way back to a normal life,” she says. “This is the purpose of my life.”

Call the Bemis School of Art at (719) 475-2444 during registration office hours, Monday through Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. with the course name(s), number(s), and method of payment to register over the phone. Registration implies the responsible party understands the course levels below and has self-selected a course or courses that match their skill level. If Bemis identifies a student enrolling for a class below their skill level they may be asked to withdraw and/or switch into a course that’s a better match.

CLASS LEVELS Level A – All levels welcome Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom. Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Student should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium. Level III – This class is for those who have significant experience in the medium — two or more classes or a year or more of experience Level IV – This class is for those with advanced skill or knowledge in the medium. This could include four or more classes or several years of experience. Student should be highly motivated and self-directed. Some classes in this level will require a portfolio review and/or approval of the instructor.

POLICIES & WAIVERS Registration implies the responsible party understands and agrees to the following policies and waivers. All students must follow COVID-19 precautions outlined on the Fine Arts Center visit guideline webpage, to participate in in-person courses and workshops. Additionally, we ask that you arrive for in-person classes on time and promptly leave when class ends. Please do not enter Bemis School of Art buildings until your class begins. No additional visitors are permitted in the buildings at this time.

POLICIES General

• The Fine Arts Center at Colorado College’s Bemis School of Art (henceforth, Bemis School of Art) reserves the right to change class instructors when necessary. • Disorderly conduct or misbehavior while on Colorado College grounds or participating in a virtual course will not be allowed and may result in suspension from class(es). • Suspension due to misconduct does not release the student/parent from financial obligation to Bemis School of Art. • No pets are allowed on campus. Service animals are welcome. • Bemis School of Art reserves the right to refuse enrollment to participants with a history of unacceptable behavior. • Parents must arrive to pick up their children on time. A childcare fee may be assessed for children waiting for more than 15 minutes. • Bemis School of Art does not prorate tuition. • Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make-up classes will be given for absences. • Use of studios for commercial production work is prohibited. • Bemis School of Art studios are reserved for the use of registered students during class time only. • Bemis School of Art parking spaces are reserved for the use of registered students during class time only. • Enrollment in class does not guarantee a space in the Bemis School of Art lot. Please use street parking as needed.

VIRTUAL POLICIES Students registered for virtual courses are expected to conduct themselves as if participating in an on-site Bemis course. As a virtual course registrant, Bemis asks that you please be aware of your surroundings during virtual class sessions. Ensure your Zoom camera background is simple and clear of any foot traffic, including family members moving in and out of view, bright backlighting, or anything else that would be distracting to fellow students and the instructor. If need be, you can choose to turn off your camera in Zoom and turn it back on when you’re ready.

Withdrawals and Transfers

• Tuition fees are for the entire course as scheduled regardless of attendance. No refunds or make-up classes will be given for absences. • Notice of withdrawal must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 475-2444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class. • No refunds will be given to participants who elect to withdraw from a class once it has begun. • Failure to attend sessions or notification to the instructor will not be regarded as an official notice of withdrawal. • There is a $10 withdrawal fee for Fine Arts Center members and a $20 withdrawal fee for non-members. • Request for a course transfer must be received by the Bemis front desk staff by phone (719) 475-2444 or email bemis@coloradocollege.edu no later than one week prior to the first day of class. • Participants may transfer classes one time per semester. Each additional course transfer will incur a $10 transfer fee. • Checks returned are not honored for any reason and will be subject to a $15 NSF charge and subject to prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

Cancellation

The Bemis School of Art reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes. If it is necessary to cancel a class for any reason, all registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and given the opportunity to transfer into another class. If a participant does not wish to transfer into another class, they may instead opt to receive a letter of credit to use toward any future Bemis School of Art course or a refund in the method in which they originally paid (card, cash, or check).

WAIVERS Publicity Waiver

Unless informed otherwise in writing, the Bemis School of Art considers photographs taken of students and their artwork to be permissible for publication in Colorado College, Fine Arts Center, and Bemis School of Art informational and promotional publications, including websites and social media.

Medical Care Waiver In the event of illness or injury, the staff of the Bemis School of Art will act as the agent in obtaining medical care for registered students and have permission to contact the participant’s emergency contact(s) on file.

VIRTUAL WAIVER By registering for a Bemis School of Art virtual course, you are acknowledging that instructors and fellow students of said course may be able to view everything in the line of sight of all shared camera video during live Zoom sessions. Virtual courses may be recorded for quality assurance and promotional publications, including websites and social media.
