Artivism Colorado
About the Instructor
Artivism Colorado serves as the intersection of art and activism, teaching young artists to think like activists and to share their messages through art. Participants will be taught to use their creativity to raise awareness, mobilize, and inspire others.
Lisa Villanueva, Founder, Artivism Colorado
Bemis has joined with Artivism Colorado because we believe it is important to teach our children to be critical thinkers who possess the power to think outside the box and have compassion for all of creation. The goal is not to influence any political opinions, but to create strong individuals who are key players in their future. With Artivism, young people are encouraged to explore art ideas that evoke emotions while investigating human, civil, animal, and environmental rights to produce change. They are emboldened to discover their passions and find their voice in society. Follow Artivism Colorado on Facebook

“Originally from Chicago, I am an eclectic urban and Afrocentric artist. I work with many mediums, specializing in clay sculptures and the renovation of leather. An educator and youth and community activist by trade, I desire to uplift our future youth leaders through the arts. I designed a curriculum that fuses art and activism called Artivism. Intrigued by people I see on the street, I am excited to recreate the experience I had with them into a piece of art. You might see them in a friend, family member, or a colleague. Nevertheless, they are people you see daily whose beings connect with my spirit and ask that I tell their stories through my art. Look deep, and you too might see who I see, feel the misfortune, humility, pride, and distinction they made me feel. Their voices speak through me and I tell their stories.” Lisa partners with Bemis School of Art and various community art organizations to facilitate Artivism Colorado. She is also the author of a K-12 curriculum that she facilitates with her primary students.

Enchanted Textures of Taos, New Mexico with Martha Mans This plein air water-media workshop takes place in and around the historic town of Taos, New Mexico. In 1915, Taos became famous as the home of the Taos Society of Artists and has remained an artist’s mecca ever since. Our instructor Martha has also become enchanted with New Mexico and uses its light and textures as the subject of her watercolor and oil paintings. The chamisa, sage, and cottonwood trees against the rugged mountains and mesas make up the enticing landscape of northern New Mexico that she paints. In autumn, the textures and colors are especially glorious. This will be the environment that will inspire your paintings. Martha will instruct in how to use water-media, including transparent watercolor, gouache, and acrylic to paint on-site in picturesque Taos. Improve your paintings with a greater understanding of elements of design, including employing rhythm in landscape painting and leading the viewer through the painting by providing a point of interest. Add strength to your composition using light, midtones, and rich darks. Learn how to achieve rich color using paint-to-water ratio.
