Please read all registration procedures and related policies carefully. You may register online or by phone. Full payment is due upon enrollment. Checks, cash, money orders, and all major credit cards are accepted.

Registration should be made as soon as possible. Class sizes are limited and spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Level A – All levels welcome. Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium. Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom. Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Students should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium. Level III – This class is for those who have significant experience in the medium – 2-3 or more classes or a year or more of experience. Level IV – This class is for those with advanced skill or knowledge in the medium. This could include four or more classes or several years of experience. Students should be highly motivated and self–directed. Some classes in this level will require a portfolio review and/or approval by the instructor. Registration implies the responsible party understands the course levels above and has selected a course that matches their skill level. Students who are identified as being enrolled in a class above their actual level will be encouraged to move into a class that better fits their level of skills.

Introduction to the Elements of Art

Instructor: Aaron Bauer This class is for children who enjoy their art classes in school and would appreciate greater freedom in what they create. The course will cover the 7 Elements of Art and the 12 Principles of Design, then guide students along a basic art creation process. By the end of the course, each student will have an art piece to share and present in front of their classmates. Supplies will be provided. Painted Sculptures

Instructor: Zandra Zieman-Foster Create animal sculptures inspired by the Oaxacan-painted animals of Mexico. You will learn about color theory, rhythm, repetition, and how to mix colors. You will then apply these skills to a variety of projects including painting, pattern making, and sculpture. Boxes and Treasures

Instructor: Alyson Blanton Have you always been fascinated by treasures no one understands and need a special place for them? In this class we will construct clay boxes of differing sizes and shapes using various techniques to hold our special objects. We will also make our own treasures out of clay and other materials to place within our special box. Come construct, sculpt, and paint with us; there will be an equal emphasis on product and process. The Mountain that Loved a Bird

Instructor: Linda Sagastume Explore making art using painted papers and collaging them in the style of Eric Carle who illustrated The Mountain that Loved a Bird. Bold colors and shapes will come together to create pictures inspired by the illustrations in this book. A fun and playful approach will be encouraged as well as the freedom for creative expression. The FAC’s Bemis School of Art and La Foret Conference and Retreat Center Present: Art and Acting in the Forest

Enjoy outstanding arts education with instructors from the Fine Art Center’s Bemis School of Art set in the lush forest at the 400acre La Foret Conference and Retreat Center. The FAC’s partnership with La Foret has a long history. Alice Bemis Taylor, one of the three benefactresses of the Fine Arts Center, had her summer home at La Foret. The Taylor Memorial Chapel, built in 1929, was designed by the Fine Art Center’s architect, John Gaw Meem. Stretch your imagination! Experience a variety of artistic styles and techniques, including painting, printmaking, and mixed-media art while exploring elements of composition and design. Cultivate your acting skills, voice, movement, and characterization with theater games, mime, and improvisation. Art and acting will come together on Fridays with a special showcase performance and art exhibit for friends and family. La Foret staff will provide swimming in the afternoon, so bring your swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen. Each student should bring lunch and snacks and should be prepared for a variety of activities and weather. No open-toed shoes or sandals. Students may arrive after 8:50 a.m. La Foret is a licensed childcare organization and requires several forms for your child’s protection (Camp Health Form and Certificate of Immunization). Some require a doctor’s signature. All the forms must be completed and given to La Foret prior to the first day of camp. Your child cannot participate until the paperwork is received. Fundamentals of Drawing

Instructor: Jantzen Peake This course is a fun way to learn new drawing skills and how to train your eyes to really see. There is no “can’t” in this introduction to drawing course – only “I can!” You will be guided on how to render an object, bringing depth into your work. Explore how to use color and source of light to make your ideas come to life. Beginning Wheel Throwing

Instructor: Jeremiah Houck Whether just starting out, or practicing recently learned skills, this class covers and reinforces everything necessary to be comfortable throwing pots. Design, throw, glaze, and fire bowls, plates, platters, bottles, vases, and more! These are skills that continue to help students for the rest of their lives. Supplies will be provided. Fundamentals of Acrylic Painting

Instructor: Jantzen Peake Acrylic painting is a fun, vibrant, and a fast-drying way to express yourself. Learn some basic drawing and painting techniques such as: composition, building up the volume of an object, rendering techniques, a variety of brush strokes, bringing a light source into your paintings, layering, introduction into color theory, and so much more! Practice these techniques by working with still life references, landscape paintings, and more. Whether you are just starting out or have never touched acrylic painting before, you will see notable improvements throughout this course, building confidence in your painting. Teen Raku

Instructor: Alyson Blanton What could be more exciting than the sizzle of a hot pot in cold water? Experience the art of Raku while learning wheel throwing and handbuilding skills. Teen Wheel Throwing

Instructor: Maggie Quinn Explore a variety of ceramic forms on the wheel with your peers. This class is a great supplement for young artists without time in their schedule to take an art class or for those who wish to expand their arts experience. Dive into ceramics in a low pressure and supportive environment: no grades, no stress! 3D Sculpture

Instructor: Turner Black Learn to draw from your life! Cultivate a daily creative sketch-booking practice and an observational eye. Introduction to Murals

Bemis ArtTrax: Drawing

Instructor: Kathryn Romberg Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. Emphasis is not on producing finished works of art but rather on developing a basic skill set through practice and repetition. No prior knowledge or experience in the medium is needed or expected for level I classes. The courses then proceed sequentially, each level building upon what was previously presented. Painting the Seasons: Winter

Instructor: Linda Sagastume Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Students should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium. Nature is a gold mine of inspiration — what better way to explore its countless variations than by painting the seasons? The winter landscape lends itself to cool shadows and warm sunlit reflections. In this workshop, we will use a limited palette to simplify color mixing and create a harmonious painting. Exploring Watercolor

Instructor: Patrice Filler Level 0 – This class is for the true beginner with no prior experience in the medium. Discover the unrivaled and endless possibilities of watercolor. Elevate Your Art: Textures in Painting

Instructor: Karen Mosbacher Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Students should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium. Techniques like texturing can elevate your paintings extensively. Learn multiple ways to add exciting and intriguing textures to your paintings with color techniques, added substances, glazing applications, and more. Know when to add and remove areas in your work to create true depth, interest, and wonder. Watercolor Techniques and Mountain Landscapes

Instructor: Ronee Smith Level A – All levels welcome. Discover new watercolor techniques and try something new! In this class, we will examine the art style of contemporary artist Jen Aranyi, practice drawing a simple, abstract mountain range, then outline it with black Sharpies, and finish the sky with watercolors to create a galaxy-like effect. We will explore different ways to finish the foreground (in front of the mountains, such as trees, a river, a camping site, etc.). Acrylic Painting Sampler

Contemporary Mini Fresco-secco

Instructor: Zandra Zieman-Foster Level A – All levels welcome. Explore painting with tempera paint on a plaster surface, similar to how experts did in the early centuries, but on a smaller scale. This method produces bright, vibrant paintings. Styrofoam provides a sturdy lightweight base for the plaster compound, and when it dries, makes a dry absorbent base for wet tempera paint. This medium is great for painting impressionistic style still life and flower arrangements, or even abstract style compositions. Use Your Acrylics like Watercolors

Fun in the Darkroom

Instructor: Angela Crews Level I – This class is for those with some familiarity with the medium. This could include informal use of the medium outside of the classroom. For eight weeks, learn to refine your black and white darkroom skills with instruction in film processing, printing with contrast filters, split-filter printing, and cropping/ positioning for artful presentations. We will also explore techniques such as the Sabattier process. We will work on honing your skills to produce beautiful exhibition quality prints. Enameling on Granite Ware

Instructor: Pat Musick Level A – All levels welcome. Camp dinnerware known as “granite ware” makes an easyto-enamel substrate for further enameling (powdered glass fused to the surface). We’ll create designs for a circular form, then apply enamels on six-inch-diameter plates, fuse them to the plate by firing for a few minutes, and repeat the process in many successive layers. Techniques and types of enamels used will include sifting, sgraffito, poured-on liquid enamels, and more! Enameling: Rhapsody in Blues

Instructor: Pat Musick Level A – All levels welcome. Blue enamels, both opaque and transparent, are particularly brilliant and versatile. In this workshop, we’ll create compositions that maximize the various qualities of blue glass fired to metals, including transparent blues on silver foil, mixes and gradations of opaque blues, and overlays of transparents on opaques. This workshop gives beginners a solid grounding in enameling techniques; those more experienced address the design and expressive challenges of a limited palette — blue doesn’t just mean the blues! Enameling: Multiple-Segment Pieces

A larger enameled wall piece can be made even with a small kiln by mounting multiple segments together. We’ll consider historical and contemporary works in enameling and other media made up of segments. In designing and making your piece with an overall image or composition spread over multiple sections, we’ll consider concept, imagery, shapes of segments (jigsaw vs. squares, for example), final size, visual texture, firing sequence, and other factors. The last class will include mounting and critique of the pieces. Jewelry Production & Lost Wax Casting

Instructor: Wade Petersilie Level III – This class is for those who have significant experience in the medium – two or more classes or a year or more of experience. Advanced jewelry makers – this class is for you! Experience different ways to work with wax including wax modeling, carving wax, wax sheet construction, applying textures to wax, and metal to wax weight calculation. Spruing for casting and metal flow, investing for casting to achieve solid porosity free castings. To complete the project, you will also learn how to finish, polish, adjust size, hang balance for pendants, earring placement, and weight the pieces. Depending on time and student’s ability, stone setting may also be explored. Please note that casting will be done off site at the instructor’s studio; more information will be shared on the first day of class. The instructor will show how to use flexible shaft tools. Each student will be provided with three to use and experiment with. Whimsical Animal Necklace

Instructor: Zandra Zieman-Foster Level II – This class is for those who have taken at least one class in the medium. Students should be comfortable with the basics of how to use and manipulate the medium. Meow, hoot, woof! The possibilities are many when it comes to the Peyote stitch. Why not challenge your peyote skills to stitch up a whimsical cat, dog, or owl mini pouch necklace? This particular odd count tubular peyote method starts by building both sides of the pouch from the bottom up, from one line of strung beads. In addition, learn the twisted herringbone stitch to make a fun strap to complete the necklace. Ears, feet, and tails can be added for more details, as well as face design.
