Summer Music Festival 2017 JUNE 4–24

www.coloradocollege.edu/musicfestival | 1

Confused about our variety of performances? Allow us to explain. Festival Artists Concerts Our renowned festival faculty perform chamber music in the intimate setting of Packard Hall.

Festival Orchestra Concerts With Maestro Scott Yoo behind the baton, the festival orchestra shines in two concerts at the Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center. Having only met a few weeks prior, the fellows impress each year with their artistic abilities and passionate performances!

Pre-concert Recitals Festival faculty give a half-hour performance of a work that inspires them. These recitals are free and open to the public. Stay for the concert that follows and enjoy the wine bar and great company of fellow music lovers in between the two events.

“On the Fringe” Concert Series Illustrious friends of the festival perform in these concerts, celebrating the spirit of collaboration and offering a diversion from our traditional programming.

Festival Orchestra Children’s Concert An annual favorite for all ages! The orchestra performs as well as educates everyone about the instruments and how they work together. The featured work this year is Poulenc’s The Story of Babar the Little Elephant. This free concert packs the Richard F. Celeste Theatre each year, so be sure to get your tickets in advance. 1 | COLORADO COLLEGE Summer Music Festival | Be Inspired.

Music at Midday Our exceptional festival fellows perform chamber music that they have been working on with their faculty coaches. These free performances rival those of any professional ensemble. The best way to spend your lunch break.

Student Concerto Reading All festival fellows are invited to audition to read one movement of a concerto with the festival orchestra. The concerto reading gives the selected fellows a chance to work through the movement while receiving feedback on their performance from festival faculty.

Community Master Classes A chance for community members to perform for our festival faculty. These master classes are free and open to the public. Participation is by invitation only.

Outreach Concerts The Summer Music Festival is proud to bring its music to a variety of local organizations. You will find a list of all outreach concerts on page 16.

Duo for flute and piano

ˇ Janácek Concertino ˇ A terzetto is a trio; a piece of music composed for three instruments. Dvorák’s Terzetto was written ˇ to be played by National Theatre Orchestra violinist Josef Kruis and one of his students. Dvorák heard the duo rehearsing and was inspired to compose for them, with himself on viola. Though the piece proved too difficult for the student violinist, our brilliant faculty trio will bring it to life! www.coloradocollege.edu/musicfestival | 4

If you haven’t yet heard festival faculty member – and winner of the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition – Jon Nakamatsu as a soloist, you’ve been missing one of the most highly regarded pianists touring today. www.coloradocollege.edu/musicfestival | 8

bach Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 One of the few of his works published during his lifetime, Bach’s Goldberg Variations were named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may have been the first to perform the work. Full of challenging technical passages, Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 was premiered in 1933 with Shostakovich himself at the piano. In fact, Bartók had composed another violin concerto 30 years earlier. That work – tied to a romance that had ended – was neither performed nor published until well after the composer’s death, at which time this evening’s Violin Concerto was posthumously renamed Violin Concerto No. 2.
