This connection is a powerful thing, with the ability to transform lives, and ultimately transform human experience.” ~ Kristi Bowman Dear Alumni: As we plan a weekend with you in mind, I hope, as new alumni director here at Colorado College, that you will consider joining us and your fellow alumni on campus for Homecoming on October 10 – 13, 2013. We’re excited to welcome you back to campus, and I, for one, look forward to meeting you and hearing your stories. Every one of us has a story woven from various threads of experience, many of them obtained in the “safe place” that was our time at college. At no other time in our lives are we given the same freedom to stretch ourselves and the boundaries around us than during those precious years. Yes, life is busy. There are too many things to do, places to be, obligations to meet. But Colorado College is worthy of a visit to nurture your soul, stroke your consciousness, and connect with others who have shared a common experience. The writer William James puts it this way: “We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” Let that deep be Colorado College. In this guide you will find details on events planned for the weekend. We’ve crossreferenced them in different ways so that you can easily peruse the offerings. You will also find the necessary information on how to register and where to stay, and we suggest that you block the time on your calendar now because we all know how easily our time can get dedicated to other things. If you decide to join us, there is one program that will require some advance preparation, as only a college of CC’s caliber would, and that is the Freedom and Authority session dedicated to discussing “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. See details listed under the program listing for Saturday. I know not when you visited campus last, but there may be no finer time to visit than October. With the scents and scenes of autumn playing among the peaks, we hope our program piques your senses on every level but especially from that place of human desire, the desire to connect. We invite you to campus this fall for a special weekend of reuniting with friends, exploring and rediscovering campus, and celebrating your alma mater, Colorado College. Join us for Homecoming traditions such as Freedom and Authority, Homecoming Convocation, and the all-campus picnic under the tent. We’ll also celebrate new traditions including fireworks, an all-campus wine tasting, and a Faculty Meetup reception, providing alumni with an opportunity to catch up with their favorite faculty and emeriti faculty. CLASS REUNIONS Congratulations to alumni from the classes of 1958 (55th Reunion), 1963 (50th Reunion), 1968 and 1969 (combined 45th Reunion), 1973 (40th Reunion), 1988 (25th Reunion), 1993 (20th Reunion), 1997 and 1998 (combined 15th Reunion), 2003 (10th Reunion), 2008 (5th Reunion), and the classes of 2011, 2012 and 2013 who will return for a Recent Grads Reunion. The following people will be honored with awards at Homecoming Weekend 2013. The Louis T. Benezet Award recognizes outstanding achievement in one’s chosen field, excellence through unusual success or contribution, innovation or research that has advanced a profession or a cause, and/or extraordinary contributions and achievements that have improved people’s lives and exemplify the values of a liberal arts education. These attributes characterized the important contributions of Louis T. Benezet, president of Colorado College, 1955-63. Recipients: Jeff Bauer ’69, Max Power ’63. Jeff Bauer ’69 is an internationally recognized health futurist and medical economist, based in Chicago, Ill. Known for his proposals to create an efficient and effective health care delivery system through multi-stakeholder partnerships and other initiatives focused in the private sector, Jeff is an independent, industry thought leader, who forecasts the evolution of health care and develops practical approaches to improving the medical sector of the American economy. Jeff has published more than 225 articles, books, web pages, and videos on health care delivery. He is quoted often in the national press and writes regularly for professional journals that cover the business of health care. In addition, Jeff has a strong foundation of academic experience. He was a full-time teacher and administrator at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver from 1973 to 1984, where he held appointments as associate professor and as assistant chancellor for planning and program development. He also served concurrently for four years as health policy adviser to Colorado Gov. Richard D. Lamm. Max Power ’63 is the author of “America’s Nuclear Wastelands: Politics, Accountability and Cleanup,” published in 2008. The American Library Association selected the book as one of 21 “Best of the Best” from university presses in 2008. Max currently resides in Corvallis, Oregon, and chairs the statutory Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board as a governorappointed citizen member. He also is a neutral member of the Hanford Concerns Council, a group chartered to deal with complex employee concerns involving health, safety and environmental issues. He has been involved in the Hanford Openness Workshops, and served in joint projects with the Washington League of Women Voters and other nonprofit and governmental organizations in a series of workshops regarding the disposition of surplus plutonium and the interstate transfers of nuclear waste. Max was senior policy adviser in the Nuclear Waste Program of the Washington State Department of Ecology, Olympia, where he worked on nuclear contamination and cleanup issues. The Lloyd E. Worner Award recognizes outstanding loyalty, service and generosity to the college as evidenced by continuing concern and support for students and the quality of teaching and learning, as well as the general well-being and future excellence of the institution. characterized the many years of service and effective contributions of Lloyd E. Worner, Class of 1942, who served as a faculty member, dean and ultimately president of Colorado College (1964-81). Recipient: Greg Smith ’69. Greg Smith ’69, of Denver, is a health care business lawyer and an adjunct/affiliate faculty member in bioethics and law at the University of Denver, Regis University, and the University of Colorado, Denver. After finishing law school, Greg returned to Colorado and became active in the CC alumni program, starting in Denver with work on various local committees and eventually serving on the CC Alumni Association Board, culminating in becoming president from 1997-2001, during which time he also served on CC’s Board of Trustees. He considers that time to be one of the greatest opportunities he has had to serve the college and become better acquainted with its administration, faculty, staff, and then-current students as well. Having had the grounding of a CC education, he decided to continue his own formal education by returning to graduate school in 2006 and is currently working on a doctorate in bioethics and health policy at Loyola University. Greg says the intellectual curiosity formed, nurtured, and supported at CC has been of tremendous importance to his academic success in recent years. The Gresham Riley Award recognizes faculty and staff who have made a significant difference to the Colorado College community through outstanding service, commitment and accomplishment. The continuing concern for and support of students and alumni demonstrated by such individuals ensure the general well being and future excellence of the college. These accomplishments exemplify the important contributions made by Gresham Riley, the tenth president of Colorado College, 1981-92. Recipients: Marcia Dobson, John Riker. Marcia Dobson, professor of classics, has taught in the Classics Department for 36 years. Dobson initiated the Psychoanalysis Minor at Colorado College, and now teaches classes in psychoanalysis to CC students both at Colorado College and at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute during the summer. Marcia’s recent research and publications consider classical texts in their relationship to psychoanalytic thinking and theory, more particularly: “Freud, Kohut, Sophocles: “Did Oedipus Do Wrong?” and “Contemporary psychological approaches to the Aristophanes Myth in Plato’s Symposium” (Dobson and Riker, 2013). Marcia is also an associate editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology. The core of everything Marcia does lies in teaching her students. Over the years she and her husband, Professor John Riker, have engaged in overloads at the college, such as teaching students about alcohol and drugs as well as engaging them in the delightful diversions of ballroom dancing, an important avocation for them both. John Riker is professor of philosophy at Colorado College. John came to Colorado College in the fall of 1968 and has taught here for 44 years, barring just one year when he was the Kohut Professor at the University of Chicago. He chaired the Philosophy Department for 15 years, and has been interim chair several times. For the first 23 years of his career, John published almost nothing. Rather, he was establishing himself as a teacher, performing various administrative tasks for the department and the college, and reading widely in theories of human nature—sociological, anthropological, biological, ethological, and psychoanalytic. John says it took a long time for this scholarship to formulate itself into a theory, but once it did, his writing took off. books. Also during this latter part of his career, he has been voted Lloyd Worner Teacher of the Year four times, Bob Pizzi Advisor of the Year twice, and was the initial recipient of the Victor Nelson-Cisneros Award for the person most promoting diversity on campus. The Spirit of Adventure Award recognizes an alumnus/a, who exemplifies the unique CC experience through a life of intellectual, social or physical adventure. These attributes are characterized by Robert M. Ormes ’26, English Professor, Colorado College, 1952-1973 who was the inaugural award recipient. He was an adventurer of the mind, body and the spirit which exemplifies much of what is special about Colorado College. Recipient: Brian Grossman ’88. As a co-founder of Kids in the Game, Brian Grossman ’88 had a vision to provide access to sports programs to underprivileged kids throughout the United States. Brian recently co-founded ElectricXP, a passion data company with a mission to build a new and unique platform — Buckitdream — that provides people around the world with the opportunity to create a virtual bucket list and live their dream experiences. Brian’s own major bucket list accomplishment was the Marathon des Sables (“Marathon of the Sands”), a 6-stage/7-day adventure in the Sahara Desert of Morocco, known as the “Toughest Footrace on Earth.” Brian has more than 20 years of professional experience working in start-up, early stage, and advanced company businesses with innovative technologies. He served as director of corporate development at CDC Corporation, identifying and negotiating Asia Pacific distribution partnerships and the acquisition of enterprise software companies. As a co-founder and director of Platinum China Software, he was responsible for building the sales and marketing organization, legal matters, and Greater China expansion strategy, eventually orchestrating the trade sale of the company to CDC. Attendees will have a plenary session to discuss the book and then break out into smaller discussion groups led by members of the faculty. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells; from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia—a land of wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo—to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells. The Visual Arts Systems and Subversions, IDEA Space, Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday: 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. The exhibition will feature several projects that create, examine, and/or disrupt natural and artificial systems. Each piece in the exhibition either creates a system in which the audience may participate, uncovers hidden social or natural systems, or actively unravels (or hacks) pre-established systems to achieve other aims. Projects include: a computer-generated environment in which organisms grow and evolve; a visualization of how sound waves disrupt growth patterns of bacterium; an examination of local water reclamation systems; and lyrical animations of the ecosystems of two distinct environments. Participating artists: Nurit Bar-Shai, Jon Cohrs, Scott Johnson, Graham Wakefield and Haru Ji, and Marina Zurkow. Jessica Hunter-Larsen ’90, curator of the IDEA Space, will lead tours on Friday, October 11, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, October 12, at 3 p.m.

“Richard Melo: A Life in Prints,” Coburn Gallery, Worner Campus Center Friday, October 11, 1 – 5 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 1 – 5 p.m. Over the course of his rich and productive career, acclaimed printmaker and painter Richard Melo (born 1928) has worked in a variety of media. While actively stretching his boundaries as an artist through continual exploration, Melo retained a distinct artistic vision that remains consistent throughout his body of work. Drawing from his archives from over 50 years of artistic production, this exhibition celebrates the creative life of a master craftsman. This exhibition is co-curated by Jessica HunterLarsen ’90, InterDisciplinary Arts Curator with student interns Grace Gahagan ’14, and Claire Lukeman ’14.

And What Are We Doing?” A performance piece by John Cage and directed by Professor Andrew Manley Friday, October 11, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 7:30 p.m. Kresge Lecture Hall, Tutt Science Center When, in the 1960’s, John Cage was told that the burning questions for students were: Where are we going? and what are we doing?, he took these as a text and made four lectures that are funny, instructive, nearly simultaneous, spoken but musical and, like all of Cage’s work, - utterly, breathtakingly, unique. As the text says: Everyone’s confused: there isn’t anybody today who isn’t confused - Here we are. Let us say Yes to our presence together in Chaos. The most influential and controversial American experimental composer of the 20th century, John Cage was the father of indeterminism, a Zen-inspired aesthetic that expelled all notions of choice from the creative process. While recognized as one of the most important composers of the century, John Cage’s true legacy extends far beyond the world of contemporary classical music. After him, no one could look at a painting, a book, or a person without wondering how they might sound if you listened closely.

REGISTRATION AND FEES
You will save time and money if you register in advance of your arrival on campus. An early bird registration fee of $25 per household is available from August 1 – October 4, 2013. This fee is waived only for members of the Classes of 2008-2013 who register by October 4. After October 4, a registration fee of $50 per household will apply and there will be a $10 additional fee per person, per event. We do our best to accommodate walk-ins, but cannot guarantee a seat or a meal unless you have registered by October 4, 2013. Please call (719) 227-8171 for assistance with your registration. The Alumni Relations staff, along with more than 100 Colorado College staff, make every effort for all events to be as well planned as possible. To that end, it helps us immensely when you make a good faith effort to register and pay the requested fees. These fees help cover the costs of food, beverages, cleaning, set-up, tents, tables, chairs, and entertainment. We could not hold Homecoming Weekend without the support of those attending.

A complimentary Colorado College shuttle will be available during Homecoming Weekend to transport alumni and their guests between campus and the Antlers Hilton and Wyndham Grand hotels downtown. The shuttle will pick up at the main entrance of the Antlers Hilton and Wyndham Grand hotels and on the south side of the Worner Campus Center. ATHLETIC EVENTS
Alumni may attend on-campus athletic events for free with their official Homecoming Weekend name tag. If you would like to attend the hockey game, you have a few options. Alumni who would like to sit with reunioning classmates, may purchase tickets through Homecoming registration for general admission seating in the alumni reunion section. Tickets cost $12 per person for seating in sections 202 and 203, right behind the student section. Seating is limited and alumni reunion section tickets must be purchased by October 4, 2013. Tickets purchased in the alumni reunion section by October 4, 2013, will be available for pick up at Registration Central in the Worner Campus Center. If you would prefer to sit in another section, or if you miss the October 4 deadline to purchase tickets in the alumni reunion section, single game reserved seating tickets go on sale September 21, 2013, and can be purchased directly from the World Arena by calling (719) 576-2626, (866) 464-2626, or www.cctigers.com. Parking at the World Arena is $5. All hockey tickets are non-refundable.

CHILDREN AT HOMECOMING WEEKEND
Children age 12 and younger eat for free at all on-campus events. If attending the hockey game, children age 2 and older must have a hockey ticket. Event Sitters by Charity offers safe and professional childcare during Homecoming Weekend on Friday, October 11, from 6 p.m. – midnight and Saturday, October 12 from 6 p.m. – midnight in the Worner Campus Center. Dinner is included. Pre-registration is required for all children and must be completed by October 4, 2013. For more information about prices, see the registration form.
BOOKSTORE DISCOUNTS
The Colorado College Bookstore offers discounts on CC logo merchandise. Alumni who are registered and wear an official Homecoming Weekend name tag will receive a discount equal to the number of years since graduation up to 50 years. For example, members of the Class of 1993 would receive a 20 percent discount.
