Great Places to Volunteer With Your Kids
Looking for ways your family can give back this holiday season? Here are five organizations with opportunities around Colorado where parents and kids can get busy doing good.
HELP PUT A STOP TO CHILDHOOD HUNGER
Lakewood
Kids age five and up, with a chaperone, are welcome to help mobile pantry Jeffco Eats in its mission to provide nonperishable food to Jefferson County families facing financial challenges and food insecurity. Volunteers pack up food bags every Friday at Lakewood United Methodist Church. jeffcoeats.org
COLLECT SHOES FOR THOSE IN NEED
Wheat Ridge
Where some see old shoes and clothing as garbage, Soles4Souls turns these unwanted items into opportunities by donating them to individuals living in poverty—keeping them out of the landfill too! Volunteers can collect shoes from their community with a shoe drive, and then spend time sorting through the donations at the Soles4Souls warehouse. soles4souls.org/colorado
CLEAN FOR A CAUSE
Loveland
It might not be glamorous, but sweeping out a horse stall as a member of the Hearts & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center barn team helps the Loveland-based nonprofit provide an avenue to physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being through equine partnerships. Children between eight and 14 years old can volunteer with a chaperone for this weekly commitment. Shifts last at least 2.5 hours. heartsandhorses.org
CELEBRATE FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAY
Denver
Gather your loved ones on November 19 and pitch in alongside History Colorado and Kramerica Gives for Family Volunteer Day. In honor of the global day of service, the two 501(C) (3)s will host a do-gooder’s bazaar where volunteers of all ages can make blankets for local pet shelters, decorate holiday cards for hospitalized kids, and more. historycolorado.org/events

Top Spots to Slide
Got a little thrill seeker at home? Burn off some of their energy and totally wow them by spending a late fall afternoon whizzing down one of these local slides.
Playground Treasures
Christy Schaefer, a mother of three from Erie and founder of the family activity blog SlidesandSunshine.com, asked her kids to share their favorite slide rides near Denver. They suggest:
• For a breathtakingly high playground slide, visit the children’s play area at Denver Premium Outlets in Thornton. premiumoutlets.com/outlet/denver
• For cool slides and an Instagram-worthy location, head to Paco Sanchez Park in the Riverside neighborhood. The steep and fast concrete slide and the twisty slide within the vintage microphone structure are kid favorites.
• For the best slide to glide down with a friend, hit the wide slide at Fairmount Park in Golden.
Most Epic Height
Twin Silo Park in Fort Collins wins this honor. Between two 48-foot-tall silos, a tall and twisty slide takes kids from the top two-thirds of one silo down to the bottom of the second silo. As if that was not amazing enough, the slide has a motion sensor to trigger lights and sounds as you sail to the bottom. Truly epic! fcgov.com/parkplanning/twin-silo
Indoor Slides Galore
If the weather is cold and wet, head to the world’s first indoor slide park, Slick City, which opened in Lakewood over the summer. The 40,000-square-foot facility features slides reaching heights up to 25 feet tall—a daredevil’s dream. Kids can zoom down the race slide with up to four of their friends, get dizzy going down the bowl slide, or be propelled into a foam pit after gliding down the launch slide. slickcity.com/denverwest

A SLUMBER PARTY STYLE GETAWAY
Let’s get real: there is nothing relaxing about cramming the whole family into one little hotel room, even if it’s only for a couple days. Kinship Landing, the downtown Colorado Springs boutique hotel that opened in 2020, recently debuted spacious custom family suites that make a comfy basecamp for a fall family getaway. The modern, minimalist-style rooms feature four customdesigned bunk beds, a queen bed for mom and dad, and two in-room bathrooms (hello, easier mornings!). The rooms are also pet friendly, so everyone in your crew can be included on the family vacay. After an adventure to the top of Pikes Peak, a hike through Garden of the Gods, or an outing to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, gather around a firepit or tuck in for a cozy family slumber party. kinshiplanding.com
Kara ThompsonGOBBLE AWAY for Turkey Day
Here’s a clever way to get kids involved in the Thanksgiving preparations, without crowding the kitchen. Craft these cute silverware holders. You will need dark brown, light brown, orange, red, and cream felt, craft glue, scissors, a pencil, permanent marker, and the turkey template at ColoradoParent.com. To Make: Print the turkey template and cut out pieces. Trace each piece onto the felt colors according to the notes on the template. Once all pieces of felt are cut out, grab the craft glue and start layering: Glue piece one and two together, leaving the top open to create a pocket. Continue gluing the rest of the felt pieces for the turkey body. Finally, cut two small circles from white felt for eyes and dot them with a black permanent marker. Let dry completely before inserting silverware.

Photo: Friendship Bridge Photo: Ashlee Kay PhotographyFriendship Bridge offers loans and business training to help women build better lives for their families.
By Lydia RuegerWhen Astrid, from Guatemala, separated from her husband seven years ago, her three young daughters were just one, three, and five years old. She wanted her meat and sausage business to grow in order to do the best she could for her girls, but she needed financial support to make it more profitable.
In 2020, she joined Friendship Bridge, a nonprofit based in Lakewood that operates in Guatemala, where poverty and migration rates are high. Since 1998, the organization has been providing small loans and services to women who have limited access to economic opportunities in their home country, so they do not have to make the difficult choice to migrate. Some Friendship Bridge clients like Astrid work in the food services industry; others are artisans, farmers, store owners, and coffee producers. Most are mothers working hard to create a different future for their kids.
Friendship Bridge gave Astrid a loan with which she bought industrial meat processing equipment and received business development training and connections to mentors. Now she not only supports her girls, but also employs eight people in her San Marcos community.
“I am surprised that, even as a single mother, 32 years old, and aware of the challenges we face in our communities, Friendship Bridge trusts my development and me,” Astrid says.
Friendship Bridge focuses on Guatemala due to the fact that 59% of the population lives in poverty. Additionally, nearly half of all Guatemalan children under age five are malnourished, according to The 2020 CIA World Factbook.
“The income our clients are able to bring into the home allows them to feed their families and support their children to remain in school longer,” says Caitlin Scott, Chief Strategy Officer at Friendship Bridge. “It creates generational change in quality of life.” friendshipbridge.org
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Support women entrepreneurs in Guatemala by shopping online, or make an appointment to shop in person at the in-office show room, 405 Urban St., Lakewood, 9 a.m. to noon, Monday-Thursday (303-674-0717). All items are handmade by Friendship Bridge’s arti sans. Colorado residents can also start Friendship Circles—com munity groups which benefit Friendship Bridge.
Your pre-teen daughter has developed a lot of body hair and is really embarrassed by it. How do you help her cope with it?
By Courtney Drake-McDonoughDealing with Excessive Body Hair 2 3
THE MOM WHO HAS BEEN THERE AND IS DOING IT RIGHT NOW SAYS…
I come from a long line of women with ample dark hair on the face and body and, as a teen, was extremely self-conscious about my own. I was able to make light of it thanks to my mother who did the same. I tried a variety of treatments over the years but ended up shaving every day. My 13-year-old daughter is extremely self-conscious about her own body hair and her mix of very blond hair with dark eyebrows. If she approaches me, I help her find products, take her to get her eyebrows waxed, and basically keep an open discussion going about how women’s bodies are all different. The bigger of a deal I make something, the more my children fixate on it. So when it comes to body hair, we roll with it -- and have pink razors in every bathroom.
–C.S., Denver, mother of a son and a daughter
THE MOM WHO HAS LIVED THROUGH IT SAYS…
I don’t have a teen girl, but I was that teen girl. I wish, more than anything in the world, that my parents had been willing to pay to remove some of it. Everyone always insinuated it was just normal teenage insecurity, but it wasn’t - I’m in my 40s now, and I can say, with authority, that my body and facial hair did not, and do not, fall in the range of normal, and it has had huge impacts on my quality of life since the age of 13. No one understood or took it seriously, and I’m still struggling to afford hair removal decades later.
My advice is to offer to pay for laser hair removal or electrolysis. If you can afford to help, just do it.
–Roberta S., mother of two, DenverTHE AUTHOR OF A BOOK ABOUT BODY HAIR SAYS…
Parents looking to help their children find a level of acceptance toward their body hair must wrangle with the fact that our society, to a large degree, does not see this as beautiful. That’s why working on self-acceptance and confidence is so crucial. This transcends hair and speaks to the psyche itself—if you can’t accept yourself in whole, try accepting yourself in parts. Is your child a great softball player? A dynamite pianist? Start with their most obvious strengths to help bolster their confidence as a whole.
Sometimes a confidence boost means a cosmetic treatment. If your child continues to wrestle with accepting themselves, this is absolutely a viable option. Accepting oneself as you are does not mean you can’t make changes. Love your children as they are. Share this feeling with them. Listen to their fears; help them understand their feelings are valid.
Light up the Night
By Kara ThompsonThis Dinosaur Mason Jar Solar Light is powered by an LED in the lid that turns on automatically in the dark. As soon as the sun goes down, the hand painted dinosaur and whimsical felt and paper scene magically light inside the jar. Place it near a sunny window during the day to recharge. $48, treebykerrilee.com
Space creatures don’t have to look creepy. The friendly looking alien in this Little Lights UFO Lamp is perfect for any space-obsessed kid. The night-light is made with 100% natural pinewood and comes with a remote, dimmer, and timer for easy bedtimes.
$240, littlelights.us
Add your child’s name or a sweet phrase up to 20 characters to this Personalized Flying Unicorn Night Light. The soothing rainbow scene is sketched onto an acrylic plaque and is sure to take your child into the land of make believe. $65, uncommongoods.com
Perfect for Colorado kids, this Campfire Night Light will bring the nostalgia of outdoor summer nights right to their bedroom. The wood base paired with a plastic “flame” will set the tone for creative dreaming (perhaps of bottomless s’mores). $50, crateandbarrel.com
If your child feels that they’re too grown up for a traditional night-light, this Neon LED Cloud Wall Decor is a stylish and useful alternative. It would work just as well in a nursery as it would in a tween’s bedroom, making it a piece you can enjoy for years to come. $99, potterybarnkids.com

Top Dentists
Keep your mouth happy with our comprehensive list of more than 560 of the best dentists in Denver and beyond.
THe Process
How we come up with the Top Dentists list.
This list is pulled from the 2022 Top Dentists database, which is created using peer evaluations and includes listings for more than 900 dentists and specialists in Colorado. To create its list, top Dentists asked dentists and specialists a personal question: “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer him or her to?” The nomination pool comprised all active dentists listed online with the American Dental Association as well as with dental academies and societies. (Dentists could also nominate others who may not be on those lists.) Respondents were asked to consider experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and physical results. After the responses were compiled, dentists were checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have active licenses and are in good standing. We realize there are many fine dentists who are not on this list; a dentist’s inclusion is based on the subjective judgments of fellow dentists. For more information, visit us at topdentists.com.

As parents quickly learn in the first sleepy weeks of caring for a newborn, babies are constantly changing. This continuous growth challenges parents to frequently adapt—often on the fly—as their little one masters tummy time, rolling over, sitting up, crawling—the list goes on.
Your Guide to Staying Sane While Baby is Teething
Here’s the 101 on helping your baby through the process (without losing your cool).
By Lindsay Tigar Photos:Beyond the active, noticeable transformations, plenty is going on inside, too. During the first year of life, your baby’s brain will double in size, their weight will triple, and they will show off up to four new teeth. Although those two-frontteeth photos are super cute, the process of cutting pearly whites isn’t fun for your child, or for you. Fits of fussiness and obvious discomfort make it difficult to know how to soothe your child.
We spoke with Denver-based pediatric dentists to find out how to best support your babe while they’re teething.
When Does Teething Start?
When your baby gives you that first toothless grin, it melts your heart. But around six months, you might notice a little white dot peeking through your baby’s gum. Dr. J. Patrick Bowman, DMD, MS, a pediatric dentist at Wash Park Pediatric Dentistry, says that while every child is developmentally different, most babies’ first teeth are usually in the upper or lower front area of their gums. “There are a lot of variations in teething patterns,” he adds. “Parents should not be overly concerned if their child gets a tooth out of sequence or not exactly as expected.”
Though the first tooth can come in as early as six months, parents will notice teeth continuing to sprout up until 24 to 30 months, Bowman says.
If parents are worried that their child is behind, they should seek the advice of an expert, says Dr. Bradley Smith, a pediatric dentist at Southmoor Pediatric Dentistry. Typically, he says, dentists
won’t jump to x-rays to check on teeth because they don’t want to expose toddlers to radiation unnecessarily. Remember that your kiddo is on their own timeline and will begin teething when their body is ready. One important thing to note is that baby teeth and adult teeth follow the same track. In other words, Smith says if baby teeth come early, the permanent teeth will likely come early. If the baby teeth come late, the permanent teeth will likely come late.
What Are the First Signs of Teething?
When your little one starts teething, you might think they had a rough night or that they woke up on the wrong side of the crib. However, Bowman says that if this irritability and fussiness are paired with drooling and rosy cheeks, it could signal that your baby is beginning to cut teeth. Many babies will go through restless sleep with more crying fits than normal, primarily due to their sore gums. Also, teeth stimulate and promote saliva, so extra dribble is expected. You might also notice some bleeding if you are brushing your baby’s gums. As
Bowman explains, this is due to tooth eruption and bacteria building up around the gum tissue where the tooth is pushing through.
Remember, it is very common for a child to have their hand in their mouth while teething. As a result, Bowman says many babies will pick up secondary viral infections. “While there is not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, many kiddos do have fevers while teething,” he says. “The fever is not caused by teething but rather a side effect of putting objects in the mouth, and therefore, they pick up a run-of-the-mill cold or viral infection.”
How Can You Help Your Baby While Teething?
As a parent, it’s in your DNA to want to help soothe your child anytime they’re in pain. Whether it’s doing bicycles with their legs to pass gas, rocking them to sleep when they’re feeling clingy, or singing their favorite song over (and over!) again because it makes them smile. Though you can’t take away the pain fully for your little one, you can alleviate some of the discomforts.
Our Picks:
Cooling Relief
Bowman recommends focusing on one key component that tends to help tremendously: temperature. When baby’s teeth are coming through, anything that is cold will feel soothing. If you think of any time you go to the dentist for dental work, they’ll often recommend a cold compress after a treatment. Teething products that are safe for little ones to put into their mouths give the same relief.
Bowman says you can also freeze a washcloth for ten minutes and then allow your baby to suck on it. Just ensure it’s a big enough washcloth so it isn’t a choking hazard.
The Lollaland’s 2-in-1 Solid Food Feeder + Cactus Teether ($20, LollaLand.com) features a silicone mesh bag where you can place ice cubes, fruits, or veggies and freeze them. The design makes it easy for tiny hands to grasp and enjoy the cool sensation—and flavors—of the foods or water inside.
Teething Toys
Smith says teething toys are gamechangers for many parents, and for a good reason: gnawing feels good on sore baby gums. As with pacifiers, bottle nipples, and sleepsuits, your baby will have their own preference on what they like. “Some kids like the ones that go in the freezer, others don’t,” he says. “Each child is so different; find what is helpful to your child specifically.”
Our Picks:
The highly-rated (and celebcoveted) Vulli Sophie The Giraffe Teether ($26, Amazon) allows babies to nibble on a leg that goes way back in their mouth.
For a less bulky teether, try the Milk Tea Bubble Teether from Loulou Lollipop ($26, LoulouLollipop.com) that clips on to baby’s bib or onesie, so you don’t have to worry about it falling on the ground.
Nighttime Care
For many babies, pain seems to be worse at night than during the day because your baby’s pain tolerance decreases when they are tired, Smith says. While he doesn’t recommend giving children an anti-inflammatory medicine (like Infant Tylenol or Infant Motrin) every night while they are teething, for particularly rough evenings where they seem like they are really uncomfortable, half a dose will take the edge off and allow them to rest. Remember, always speak to your pediatrician before giving your baby medication.
How to Care for the First Tooth Eventually, through all the fussiness and drooling, you’ll see that first tooth make its grand entrance. Now, what do you do? Your dental hygiene work begins before the teeth erupt, Smith says. “Use a wet washcloth or damp gauze to massage gums and clean under the lips to remove debris. This will get them used to having something in their mouth,” he explains.
Then, when your baby has a tooth or two, clean them with a washcloth or gauze to break up plaque twice a day. And go ahead and start thinking about their first trip to the dentist, which should happen by their first birthday. Your dentist will then walk you through when to begin toothpaste—usually when they have more teeth!—and how to properly brush.

Explore the Race to the Moon
The Apollo 11 moon landing was a momentous achievement for the United States. However, the country that celebrated the success of the mission was also struggling with conflict and change. Apollo sets the scene, giving visitors a glimpse of the other historic moments happening at the time, including the Cold War, Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War, and the Anti-War movement.
Exclusive to the Denver exhibition, visitors will learn what it’s like to live in space, exploring how astronauts fulfill basic needs like sleeping and using the restroom, and comparing a typical space meal to one on earth.
More than 400,000 individuals contributed to the success of the
American space program. Scientists, mathematicians, artists, engineers, writers, coders, doctors, and hundreds of other experts worked more than a decade to send humans to the moon and bring them safely home again.
"The American space program today stands on the shoulders of those who worked to make the first footsteps on the moon possible,” Ka Chun Yu, Denver Museum of Nature & Science curator of space sciences says. “From history and politics to the Apollo missions, the International Space Station and today’s Artemis program, Apollo: When We Went to the Moon showcases the power of human ingenuity, commitment, and cooperation.”
NEED TO KNOW:
Apollo: When We Went to the Moon, is on view from October 21, 2022, to January 22, 2023. As a special exhibition, admission is $5, $4 members, plus general admission of $22.95 adult, $17.95 youth ages 3-18, free age 2 and under. dmns.org
