Our March Event Guide for 2014 is here! These pages are packed with every type of race you can imagine. You can also go online at www.coloradorunnermag.com to access all of the event listings and to find out more information about each race. We have traditional running and walking events, as well as trail races and multisport races, such as triathlons. We’ve also included adventure races and mud run events. And if it seems like there are more events than ever in Colorado, you’re right. A few years ago, our event guide would consistently publish around 500 events in a year. This year we have more than 650. Many of us set big goals for ourselves at the beginning of the year. Don’t be afraid of failure. Comb through the events listed on these pages and create a schedule to help yourself really conquer your dreams this year. Maybe it’s running your fastest ever 5K or perhaps your dream is to tackle your first marathon. Last year, my running routine had grown a bit stale, so my goal was to branch out and do something new. I ran my first mud run, my first color run, as well as a few other wacky events, and really energized my zest for traditional races. Running a race is a great way to track your fitness. I like to not just run one or two big goal races a year, but participate in races regularly to see how my daily workouts are going. You typically push harder in a race than you would by yourself. It also helps tune up your race day routine. You can run a race at the beginning of your running cycle to gauge your fitness, and then race again every month to track your progress. Plus, a fall marathon or half marathon may be a long way off. Racing now will help you stay on target. If you’re having trouble just getting out the door each day, try to focus on one workout at a time. Maybe it will help you follow through to pack your bag for the gym and put it in your car the night before. Or if you’re going to run first thing in the morning, lay out your shoes and workout gear by the bed so you put it on as soon as you get up. If you feel tired or too busy, just commit to a few minutes. I usually find that once I get going, I’m grateful that I made the effort and finished my entire workout. It also helps to keep your long term fitness goals in mind. Remind yourself who it is that you want to be and what it is that you are trying to accomplish. If you’re starting to feel bored or burned out, make a change. Try something different. Try a track workout. Run hills. Stay indoors and test the treadmill. Join a group or a weekly fun run from a local running store. I hope you enjoy our event guide!

Derrick Repeats at USA Champs in Boulder Los Angeles Awarded Olympic Marathon Trials USA Track & Field (USATF) announced that the City of Los Angeles has been selected to host the 2016 USA Olympic Marathon Trials for both men and women. Los Angeles was chosen over the other finalist city, Houston, which hosted both the men’s and women’s Trials in 2012 with great success. Like in Houston, men and women will run on the same day, starting minutes apart, on a criterium-style course. The top three men and women will receive Olympic Team berths, all on live network television. The typical date for the Asics LA Marathon is in mid-March, but the Trials will be held on February 13, 2016, to allow athletes adequate time to recover and try for Olympic team berths in the track trials which are held in the summer. The “regular” Asics LA Marathon will be held Feb. 14, effectively creating a marathon festival.
Competitor Reinstates Elite Athlete Program Competitor Group Inc. (CGI) announced a new support program for elite athletes four months after abruptly halting their previous program. The new program included a “7-figure investment in 2014 plus special support for American athletes who want to qualify for the 2016 USA Olympic Marathon Trials. Last September, just days ahead of their Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half-Marathon, CGI abruptly cancelled their previously robust elite athletes program, dismissed their elite athletes coordinator, Matt Turnbull, and announced that they would no longer pay athlete appearance fees. The move subjected the company to widespread criticism and sparked a debate on the value of elite athletes to running events. The new program has three key elements: 1. Guaranteed prize money for top finishers at every Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event in North America, 2. Restoration of the company’s Half-Marathon Grand Prix, and 3. A new “Chasing Down the Dream” program, which will provide travel assistance and performance-based prize money focused on achieving the U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifying Standard at 4 events.

Sports Bra Fit Facts Runners spend a lot of time looking for the right fit in their running shoes and the right fabric to fight the elements. But we don’t always put a lot of thought into how important the right sports bra can be. The proper sports bra can cut movement by 50 percent, which is critical for women during their runs. Unsupported, the average A cup travels about an inch and a half in each direction, and a D cup bounces two to three inches. Here are a few tips to help you find the right sports bra. 1. Get measured yearly - your size can change quickly due to weight loss, weight gain, pregnancy, and age. In the dressing room look for support in three areas: the straps, the cups, and the band, including the side panels. 2. No need for two - Even larger breasted women should be able to wear just one sports bra. If you are doubling up for a run, that should be a sign that you need to go shopping to look for a new, more supportive bra. 3. Hand wash - Wash the bra in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid fabric softener and bleach. Lay it flat to dry. Don’t use the dryer because heat breaks down spandex. 4. Replace it - A wellworn sports bra will last about 12 months. Just like anything else, worn out fabrics do not perform effectively and could potentially cause chafing or discomfort. You’ll know you’re due for an upgrade when the spandex fibers start showing or the fabric no longer snaps back into shape. Photography By victor sailor / photorun.net and chris boyack

5:59. With less than a second separating the top ten men, it seemed only a matter of time before an athlete or two made their move. Bobby Mack was the first to surge leading up to the 4,000 meter mark. Mack’s move thinned the field as the top pack reduced to eight athletes. With Derrick running stride for stride just off Mack’s shoulder, the pack of runners including Sean Quigley, Luke Puskedra, Joseph Gray and Jacob Riley formed tightly behind the duo. At 6,000 meter, Derrick put in a surge, losing the majority of the pack, while Mack and Quigley tried their best to hold on. For the next quarter mile Derrick continued to lower the pace before ultimately running solo just before the 8,000m mark. Over the final two miles of the race, Derrick continued to lengthen his lead, as Puskedra came up to challenge Mack for second over the final mile and a half. As the finish line neared, Derrick took one last look over his shoulder and cruised towards repeating as U.S. champion. Derrick crossed the line in 36:13, well ahead of runner-up Puskedra at 36:38. “I want to be the best cross country runner in America,” said an elated Derrick after the race. “I feel really strong in my training, especially training at altitude at Colorado Springs. I’ve never done two-hour runs before, and now I’m doing those. I felt the guys were letting me have it, and I felt like I was in a groove, so I went.“ Behind Derrick, Puskedra out maneuvered Mack over the final mile of the race, pulling away to a second place finish, improving upon his eighth place finish from 2013. Mack finished third overall in 36:42. Gray and Quigley finished 4-5 respectively in 36:57 and 37:01. In the women’s race, the 8,000 meter race led to a few surprising results, including a breakthrough performance for Flagstaff-based Van Alstine. From the gun, a pack of a dozen women grouped up and would run together for much of the first half of the race, including pre-race favorite Olympian Jenny Simpson. Just before the 4,000 meter mark, Van Alstine along with Northern Arizona Elite teammate Kellyn Johnson, Simpson, Mattie Suver and Alisha Williams started to break from the field. As Van Alstine and Johnson led the charge, the field continued to thin. Before 6,000 meters Van Alstine surged ahead, gaining a three second lead over Johnson and an eight second lead over third place Suver. Over the final 2,000 meters, Van Alstine charged hard, grinding down the competition and widening her lead. As she crossed the finish line with a wide smile and her arms raised in triumph, Van Alstine realized she won her first U.S. title, 22 seconds before the runner-up, Simpson at 27:34. Following behind Van Alstine, Simpson used a ferocious kick to finish second in 27:56. USARC veteran Suver and teammate Williams finished third and fifth respectively, crossing the finish line in 28:00 and 28:18, while Johnson finished fourth overall in 28:12. Rounding out the top eight, Suver’s and Williams’ teammate Rochelle Kanuho continued her impressive 2014 campaign with a sixth place finish in 28:22, while Team USA Minnesota runner Meghan Peyton finished seventh in 28:26. Alia Gray ran to an eighth place finish in 28:37. coloradorunnermag.com 13

Boulder’s Jenny Simpson competed at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on February 8. She would have earned a new American Record if she had not miscounted laps in the 2 mile race. With three laps remaining, Simpson surged past Jordan Hasay into second place and was setting a furious pace to reel in Kenya’s Sally Kipyego, who had a substantial lead. Just before the bell, Simpson flew past Kipyego, but then came to a near stop. Kipyego went on to win in 9:21.04, with Simpson regrouping to finish second in 9:26.19, just three seconds off the American record. “I thought I had it together in my head, and I wasn’t going to need the lap counter. Lesson learned,” said Simpson, who admitted that she also did not pay attention to the visual lap counter positioned at the finish line.

Green Elixir: A potent immune boosting, detoxifying drink full of antioxidants
Your Diet
The amounts used will vary based upon the size of the container used (NutriBullet makes much smaller servings than a VitaMix) and your taste preferences. If you are new to veggie drinks, keep the consistency ‘thin’ to drink easily. Otherwise, nuts and seeds can be added for a thicker shake. (Note: if you are on medications for liver or kidney disorder you should consult a dietitian or physician first. Beets should be consumed in very small amounts or completely avoided and celery can interfere with diuretics).
For GoSpring Green and “Cleanse” During the hectic life of the holidays and the long winter months, many of us diverge from our usually well-controlled routines of eating and exercise. Often clients ask me about revamping their diet or completing a ‘cleanse’ in an effort to get back on track from eating less healthy. Generally a ‘cleanse’ means people either literally feel they need to clean out their intestines, and/or want to rebalance their food intake by replacing unhealthy (defined by most as processed or high sugar) foods with healthier versions. This is a positive step since how we feel is greatly dictated by what we think of our food choices. If we mentally think we are toxic, we will feel toxic. 14 coloradorunnermag.com

veryone wants to feel well and eating the right foods is part one of a holistic nutrition plan. Part two is how well we absorb and assimilate those nutrients. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to know how well we assimilate and utilize nutrients until we begin to feel unwell. When people want to cleanse, the easiest way to increase their intake of veggies is to juice or blend them. This reduces the burden of knowing how to cook, and the time needed to cook them. Juicing and blending also reduces the work required of our digestive system by making the nutrients more available to be absorbed. Though most people instinctively want to go on a juice fast when they are not feeling well, be sure to listen to hunger cues. A liquid fast sometimes leads to under eating which can add more stress to the body. Try the potent immune boosting recipe to the right, “Green Elixir.” Eating raw is another recommendation made to ‘cleanse’ the intestines and attain more energy. There are specific guidelines as to how packaged foods qualify as ‘raw’ but the premise is to eat foods as close to their raw state as possible. This is a great idea in theory but most people whose diets consist primarily of packaged, processed foods, lack the digestive ability to handle a raw food diet. Changing to a raw food diet should be done gradually; and most people will feel worse before feeling better while their bodies adapt. Adding digestive enzymes for starch and fiber may make it easier. With the gut in mind, I have compiled a list of five recommendations that anyone can use to tweak or enhance their health.
1
Use a probiotic: A probiotic is a supplement that supplies healthy bacteria to the intestines. The philosophy of functional medicine notes most health issues are related to the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. Normally, several species of bacteria and virus’s coexist in our intestines
Ingredient | Health Function 1 cup raw spinach | Chlorophyll, cartenoids, flavonoids (antioxidants) 1 cup raw kale | Chlorophyll, cartenoids, flavonoids (antioxidants) 2 small apples with skin (w/o seeds) | Fiber, polyphenols (chlorogenic acid), & flavonoids (quercetin) ½ cup raw beet (tastes best when steamed or roasted) | Detoxifies liver, kidneys & lymphatic system; phosphorous, sulfur and potassium ½ cup beet greens | Detoxifies liver & kidney 4 medium celery stalks | Nourishes liver & kidney 4 medium carrots | Beta-carotene, antioxidant, eye health Ginger root (size of fingernail) | Aids in digestion, anti-inflammatory 1 Tbsp organic lemon juice, or ½ lemon without rind | Detoxifies liver
without causing any problems. However, when these outnumber our normal “healthy” defense bacteria, we may develop weaknesses in our immune system that over time may lead to illness or allergies. n What to buy: A) Number of strains: Purchase a bottle that has more than 10 strains of bacteria which will provide a broad spectrum of coverage. B) Concentration of cells: If you haven’t used probiotics before, start with a small concentration (e.g. 5 million) and gradually build up to more than 1 billion. Its important to increase the concentration gradually to prevent gas and bloating. C) Include FOS (fructooligosaccharide), a prebiotic typically found in inulin and chicory root, and will promote growth of healthy bacteria.
2
Try Fermented Foods: Traditional lacto-fermented foods (using salt brine) contain enzymes, aid in digestion and boost immunity. The taste of fermented foods takes some getting used to so I recommend using fermented condiments to get started. n What to buy: Bragg’s Liquid Amino’s and Apple Cider Vinegar. The next step would be to add fermented side dishes to your diet. Whether it is Kimchi or Red Cabbage & Beet Sauerkraut by Wildbrine, these foods offer new fresh flavors on old time favorites. They can be costly, so buy and share with a friend, or make your own!
3
Go Green: You hear it all the time – eat your greens. n What to make: Taking advantage of seasonal root veggies, steam apple and sweet potato for a great side dish spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and coriander. Use the leftover juice from steaming as the starter fluid for a veggie juice in a VitaMix, NutriBullet or Juicer. Juicing or blending your vegetables in combination with apple, lemon or ginger is a way to make greens more palatable and drinkable. Since the taste of veggie drinks takes getting used to, start off with 1 – 2 per week and in-
crease. The biggest hurdle is getting the ingredients together and making one. Schedule the time in the evening to wash and slice the ingredients; create several servings at once in individual containers so that when you want to blend one, it’s as simple as opening the fridge and grabbing the container.
4
Green to Go: Carry pre-made green drink packets with you while traveling to increase your nutrition on the road. n What to buy: Amazing Grass & Garden for Life sell green super food single serving packets. Simply pour one into a glass of juice or water to get your daily serving of greens.
5
Digestive Enzymes: There are many combinations to choose from depending on the foods you have difficulty digesting. There are full spectrum combinations for fat, proteins and starch; combinations specific to protein and fat breakdown that contain a variety of proteases and lipases; and others specific to the various starches and fibers found in fruit, vegetables, and legumes (cellulase, xylinase, pectinase and amylase). n What to buy: If you aren’t sure which combination of enzymes you need, purchase a broad spectrum (amylase, protease, lipase, ox bile, plus additional enzymes for non-digestible fibers) that is produced by a manufacturer that follows General Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines to ensure production and manufac-
turing quality. In addition, look for the NSF certification which certifies the dietary supplement does not contain undeclared ingredients or unacceptable levels of contaminants. Examples of brands that abide by these voluntary audits on quality: Kirkland, NOW, Solaray, Jarrow, Garden of Life, Designs for Health, Rainbow Light, and Nature Made. Off to a Running Start: Five Tips New Runners Need to Know Running is simple. Just put one foot in front of the other as fast as you can, for as long as you can right? Not necessarily. Every runner has made his or her share of rookie mistakes. Follow my tips below and you will avoid these classic beginner fumbles. Or be the stubborn fool that you are, and make your mistakes yourself. You’re a runner now, so don’t worry- it’s not your fault. Stubbornness comes with the territory. By Pam Moore 16 coloradorunnermag.com
Rookie Mistake #1: Wear your grandmother’s shoes If your running shoes are the same ones you’ve been wearing since high school basketball or the ones that were perfect for the step class you loved in 1998, Do Not Pass Go. If you bought your running shoes because they match all your new running clothes, Do Not Pass Go. And, for the love of God, do not wear your grandmother’s running shoes. (My friend actually did this for her first 5K. It did not go well). You need a pair of running shoes that will support your body and your gait pattern. Go to a local specialty running store, where the knowledgeable staff will analyze your gait and help you select the shoe that will work for you. You might pay a premium for the shoes but you will save yourself a bundle on physical therapy, chiropractic, and deep tissue massage. Rookie Mistake #2: The lone wolf approach It’s hard to be the new kid on the block. I’ve been there. I get it. And I don’t care. Sorry to go Tough Love on you but you must put on your big girl (or big boy) underpants and join a running group. Once you find your wolf pack, your running peeps will hold you accountable [read: you will not hit snooze instead of running] and they will teach you all the secrets runners know about nutrition, hydration, the best training routes, and strategically placed Vaseline. I joined a running group when I was training for my first marathon. We met every Sunday at 7 AM. On a good day, there were a just a dozen of us. Most of them were much faster than I was. Precious few of them ran at my pace. Week in and week out,
I faithfully showed up. At worst I ran alone and my long run was complete by about 9 AM. No matter what, I logged the miles that would be the money in the bank I would withdraw on race day. Rookie Mistake #3. The “But everyone else is doing it” training method And now I need to totally contradict myself. Training with a group is awesome. Doing everything your friends are doing is not awesome. Just because you’re invited to do hill repeats with your neighbor on Tuesday, a track workout with your friend on Wednesday, and a tempo run with your co-worker on Thursday doesn’t mean you need to join them. Peek at any beginner or even intermediate training plan. You will not see back-to-back hard workouts. Your body can only become stronger when it has time to recover. Remember those Public Service Announcements from the 80s? They were right. Just Say No. #4. The more is better philosophy If a two-mile run is good, a four-mile run must be twice as good, right? Maybe. Ask yourself if you can complete your two-mile loop easily. If you can’t maintain a steady conversation or sing a few verses of a song (quietly), do not increase your distance. Running should feel stupidly easy before you even begin to think about adding mileage. The same goes for adding intensity. Track workouts, hill repeats, and long runs may be alluring, but there is nothing sexy about nursing an injury. Those nagging aches and pains, consistent fatigue in your legs, difficulty sleeping, recurring illnesses, lack of motivation to run - That’s your body trying to tell you something.
You’re a runner now. Stupidity and pigheadedness come with the territory. But try to step back and listen to your body. It’s smarter than you are. #5 Racing by the seat of your (new) pants Now that you’re a real runner, you’ve signed up for a race. Congratulations! If you are a little scared, that is normal. Use that fear to your advantage. Race day nerves convert to speed you never knew you had. That is, as long as you are not nervous about your outfit, your hydration, or your nutrition. It may be a mental lift to wear new socks and a new top on race day but your spirits will be in the toilet when you’re struggling with unexpected chafing and blisters. Speaking of the toilet, if you are not used to drinking or eating during training, race day is not the time to experiment, unless you want to get intimate with the port-a-potty. Do a “dress rehearsal” before race day, where you wear, eat, and drink the same stuff you will wear, eat, and drink on race day. If you have a chance, you can drive all or part of the course prior to the race. At the very least, review the course map. Although there should be signs and volunteers to help you navigate, ultimately, knowing the route is each runner’s responsibility. Then you can focus your jitters on important stufflike beating the eleven year-old who just passed you like you were standing still. jogglers set out to break world record Many of us dream of breaking a world record and attaining fame in the best-selling copyrighted book of all time: The Guiness Book of World Records. History was in the making recently at the Anthem Neighborhood Fun Run in Westminster when a new record was attempted. “We wanted to break the world record for the most jogglers in a single race, so we picked this 5K and we had nine jogglers come out and juggle for the whole thing,” says Bekah Smith of the Boulder Juggling Club. Joggling, if you’re unfamiliar with the term, is a trendy new sport which combines juggling and jogging. Jogglers are not disqualified if they drop the ball, but in competitions, they must return to the point the ball was dropped and continue from there, so that the whole race is done while juggling. Smith completed the entire 5K without dropping a ball at all. This is the first race in which I’d run side-by-side with jogglers and it was fun to be part of the notable event. When I say I was running “side-by-side,” let me qualify that in many cases that was only for a few seconds as the jogglers passed me by. Most of these jogglers were not “jogging,” but running at quite a fast pace. Admittedly neither the words, “runuglers” or “juguners” have quite the same ring to them as “jogglers,” but I want to clarify these jogglers were more than jog-juggling; they were a run-juggling. So, what is the current record for number of jogglers in a race? Well, I checked the online version of the Guiness Book of World Records and searched for Joggling and found 12 results, but they all dealt with speed rather than number of participants. The fastest 5K joggling with 3 objects for a female is Laurie Young from Canada coming it at 27:42. Bekah Smith finished in 31:05 so the speed record is in reach. And I don’t see a record for fastest male juggling 3 objects in a 5K, so that one may still be up for grabs. Michal Kapral (Canada) holds the record for the fastest marathon while joggling three objects, coming in at an impressive 2 hours, 50 minutes and 12 seconds. So, what other types of
18 coloradorunnermag.com
records are there for running in Guiness’ coveted list? Well, there is one for number of participants in a 5K. According to the site, “The largest simultaneous 5K run was set by Cancer Research UK at the Race For Life One Big Day event and involved 101,246 participants at 23 locations across the UK, on 4 June 2006.” The longest race was in 1929 from New York City to Los Angeles and was 3,635 miles. Johnny Salo was the winner and he ran it in 79 days with an elapsed time of 525 hours, 57 minutes and 20 seconds, just 2 minutes and 47 seconds ahead of second place winner, Pietro ‘Peter’ Gavuzzi. If the joggling speed record is in reach for Bekah with a little over 3 minutes faster on a 5K, certainly Peter could have made up less than 3 minutes in a 3,635 mile race with just a little more training. I can’t believe he didn’t try it a second time. There is a record for the Fastest Half Marathon Dressed as a Fruit by a Female. This was achieved by Joanne Singleton (UK) at the Schaumburg Half Marathon Turkey Trot in Schaumburg, IL, with a chip time of 1:35:45. I was disappointed that there is no mention of what type of fruit she was dressed as. Seeing however, that there is no documented winner of the Fastest Half Marathon Dressed as Candy, I’m inspired to run my next half-marathon in my M&M costume and dominate in that category. Perhaps I better enter specifically in the M&M Category, however, in case there are any faster Snickers Bars or Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup half-marathoners in the world. There is Fastest Marathon Running with an Egg and Spoon (3:47), Most Rubik’s Cubes Solved Whilst Running a Marathon (175 in 4:53:39), and Fastest Half Marathon Running Backwards by a Male (1:40:29). There are plenty of other records to be challenged, but let’s keep our eye out for the next version of the World Records when the Boulder Juggling Club wins Most Jogglers in a 5K Race. Congratulations to Bekah Smith and the Boulder Juggling Club for this momentous achievement. By Yvette Francino

caffeine performance enhancement in a mug by Nancy Clark
W
hether you are looking for a hit, boost, pleasing stimulant, or excuse to socialize with your friends, coffee is the go-to beverage for many runners. Coffeedrinkers enjoy the way a cup of morning brew enhances their feelings of well-being and their ability to accomplish daily tasks. An estimated 80% of us drink coffee daily. Why, we are more likely to drink coffee than eat fruit! Thank goodness moderate coffee intake is typically not associated with health risks. For runners, caffeine is a proven performance enhancer. In their new book Caffeine for Sports Performance, sports dietitians Louise Burke and Ben Desbrow and exercise physiologist Lawrence Spriet address all-things-caffeine that a runner might want to know. Here are just a few tidbits that I gleaned from this comprehensive resource. Perhaps
20 coloradorunnermag.com
the information will help you add a little bit of zip to your workouts. Note: No amount of caffeine will compensate for a lousy diet. If you choose to use caffeinated products to enhance your sports performance, make sure you are also fueling wisely! • A cup of pre-exercise coffee can help most runners work harder - without realizing it. Caffeine has been shown to enhance performance by about 1% to 3%, particularly in endurance sports. For example, cyclists who consumed caffeine prior to a 24 mile (40K) time-trial generated 3.5% more power than
when they did the ride without caffeine. • Runners vary in their responsiveness to caffeine, from highly effective to negative. Some of the side effects associated with too much caffeine include higher heart rate, anxiety, “coffee stomach,” irritability, and insomnia. • The recommended performance-enhancing dose of caffeine is about 1.5 mg/lb. (3 mg/kg) body weight. This can be consumed 1 hour before you run, and/or during a long run (such as a caffeinated gel or defizzed cola every hour). For example, triathletes commonly consume caffeinated gels before each segment, to distribute the caffeine throughout the event rather than have a big pre-race jolt that might make them feel shaky and unable to concentrate. Some runners delay caffeine intake until fatigue starts to appear, and then they ingest 0.5-1 mg/lb. (1-2 mg/kg) body weight.
• Caffeine’s ergogenic effect maxes out at about 200 to 250 mg caffeine. (This is much less than previously recommended.) More is not better. Experiment during training to learn what amount (if any) works best for your body! • Because the amount of caffeine in coffee and tea varies, elite runners commonly use caffeine pills or commercial products to ensure the desired intake. A comparison of the caffeine content in 16 ounces of coffee from 20 coffee venders ranged from about 60 to 260 mg. Even when the researchers purchased the same brand of coffee (Starbucks Breakfast Blend) from the same location on six consecutive days, the caffeine content ranged from about 260 to 565 milligrams per 16 ounces. • Research suggests the caffeine content of espresso also varies. A customer might get served 0.5 to 3.0 ounces of espresso (depending on the barista's generosity) with a caffeine range of 25 to 214 mg. In general, the larger venders (such as Starbucks) offer a more consistent product. But this means you don't know what you will be getting if you plan to purchase a pre-race espresso or coffee. • Energy drinks are a popular source of caffeine. A study of 500 college students in North Carolina reports 51% drank at least one energy drink in an average month in the semester. Sixty-seven percent used the energy drink to stay awake; 65% to increase energy; and 54% to drink with alcohol while partying. Of the party-drinkers, 49% consumed 3 or more energy drinks. That makes for a wide-awake drunk who may believe it’s OK to drive a car... • Caffeinated chewing gum is popular among (sleep deprived) soldiers. The gum effectively boosts physical and mental performance and helps maintain reaction time, vigilance, and ability to think clearly. The caffeine in chewing gum gets delivered quicker than via a pill (achieving significant levels in the blood in 5 vs. 30 minutes) because it gets absorbed though the cheeks, not the gut. • Caffeinated colas offer not only caffeine but also a hefty dose of sugar. Colas, taken later in a long run, can provide a much-needed source of fuel so the combination of caffeine + sugar can provide a nice boost! Hence, some runners claim defizzed Coca-Cola is their preferred sports drink despite having only 35 mg caffeine per 12 ounce can. • Caffeine is only a weak diuretic and is no longer considered to be dehydrating. A novice coffee drinker can become tolerant to the diuretic effects of caffeine in 4 to 5 days of regular caffeine intake. Even high doses (3 mg/ lb.; 6 mg/kg) have no significant effect on urine production in coffee or tea drinkers. Hence, there appears to be no hydration-related reason for runners to avoid caffeinated beverages. • Caution: Consuming caffeine might contribute to negative effects. For example, let’s say you are running in more than one competitive event in a day. If caffeine helps you go harder in the first event, will that “fry” you for the second event? Can taking another dose of caffeine counter that fatigue? With back to back events, will too much caffeine on the first day ruin your sleep, so you are unable to perform as well on the second day? More research is needed to answer those questions but for the moment, 22 coloradorunnermag.com
these situations provide good examples of why advice to use the smallest effective dose of caffeine is sensible. • In 1984, caffeine was banned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). But in 2004, WADA reversed the ruling. New research indicated the amount of caffeine needed to reach the threshold dose was detrimental to performance. Although caffeine is no longer banned by WADA, it is on the banned list for the NCAA, the governing body of collegiate sports. Collegiate runners can be cited for doping if their caffeine level is higher than 15 micrograms/ml urine. (A normal urine caffeine level is between 1-2 micrograms). Unlikely, but possible. • Teen runners should be fully mature and eating an optimal sports diet before even considering the use of caffeine. Again, no amount of caffeine will compensate for lousy fueling practices. • For even more helpful tips and tid-bits, get a copy of Caffeine for Sports Performance. You’ll actually stay awake while reading it; the book is not a snoozer! Nancy Clark, MS, RD counsels both casual and competitive athletes and is the author of several nutrition books. Common Sources of Caffeine
For a 150-pound (68 kg) runner, the recommended dose of caffeine is about 200 mg one hour before exercise. That’s the amount in a large mug (16 oz) of coffee. No problem for most coffeedrinkers! Brewed coffee: 8 oz, small; 80 mg Starbucks Breakfast Blend: 20 oz, venti; 415 mg Tea, black: 8 oz, small; 25-110 mg Tea, green: 8 oz, small; 30-50 mg Coca-Cola: 1 can; 34 mg Red Bull: 1 can; 80 mg PowerBar caffeinated gels: 1 pouch; 25-50 mg GU caffeinated gel: 1 pouch; 20-40 mg Jolt Caffeine Energy Gum: 1 piece; 33 mg NoDoz: 1 tablet; 200 mg

2014 SPRING
SHOE REVIEW
S
pring 2014 features one of the broadest, most diverse selections of footwear offerings we’ve ever seen. Thanks to strong voices from every corner—minimalists, maximalists, moderates— we’re seeing truly something for everyone. If your training is varied, and that’s certainly a proven way to become a stronger runner, then you probably also vary the shoes you run in, and that means you have more than one type of shoe in your closet. In the 16 years that we’ve been testing shoes and compiling our results in these Shoe Reviews, we always hope that the shoes produced each season are ideal for somebody. Knowing the characteristics of your feet and how they move enables you to narrow the field to the shoes that meet your needs. This season more than any other in memory has been like one of those logic puzzles: “Sally is from Salinas. Roger is older than Jenny. Pete’s favorite color is yellow. Which cousin likes pizza?” The matrix of shoes comprising this Spring Shoe Review and selected as award winners was convoluted, to say the least. It’s safe to say, however, that there’s something for everyone. Shoes for active recovery? We have a few. Shoes for faster running? Check. Shoes to deal with excess motion? Uh huh. Shoes for serious training? Every shoe in this review. The key is understanding the purpose of the shoe, its use, and which will fit your needs. Keep running, my friends. —Cregg Weinmann, Fortius Media Group Running Shoe Reviewer

W
elcome to the 2014 Spring Shoe Review from the FORTIUS Media Group, LLC partner publications and websites. Since 1998, we have been reviewing running footwear for you, our readers. The team of footwear reviewer Cregg Weinmann, designer Kristen Cerer, proofereader Marg Sumner, and project manager Christine Johnson, along with our many shoe weartesters, strives to provide clear, concise reviews of the best running products in the world. Our goal is simple: to help you find the perfect running shoe for you. So, where should you go to try out and purchase your shoes? We strongly recommend a running specialty retailer. In other words, buy your shoes from one of your local running stores. If you want to buy online, go to the local running store’s website. Why do we encourage this? First, because we think that you get the proper fitting; and second, because you’re supporting the place that gives you information throughout the year and sponsors your local events and school teams.

Top Runners Compete in Boulder 4 Miler
Rich and Pizzo Grab RRCA 5 Mile Championship and walkers came out to a sunny Hudson Gardens in Littleton for a flat and fast course that was ice and snow free. A free kids run kicked off the morning’s festivities. Top Colorado runners from across the state came out and laid down some great times on a beautiful morning. In the men’s 10 mile, Winter Distance Series alum and reigning Frosty’s 10M champion Tristan Mitchell took top honors in 57:06. The women’s 10 mile saw 42-year-old Stacey Chamberlain of Boulder grab first place in 1:05:21. In the men’s 5 mile, Winter Distance Series veteran Adam Rich of Colorado Springs took top honors with a time of 26:26. The 5 Mile event was the RRCA State Championship. The women’s 5 mile saw Denver’s Sarah Pizzo cross the line in first in 30:13. Ashley Luna of Littleton grabbed second in 30:57. More than 20 vendors had booths lining the streets of the finish area, offering freebies, food and fun activities, like post-race massages. Runners and walkers enjoyed hot Coda coffee, hot chocolate, Propel water bottles, Muscle Milk, yogurt, Power Bars, muffins, cookies, and fruit. The race benefitted the Fetal Health Foundation.
belonged to Rachel Gioscia-Ryan of Boulder who finished in 24:08. The men’s race was a runaway win by local favorite Brent Vaughn. Vaughn led from the gun and increased his lead exponentially throughout the race, finishing with a time of 19:23. Newton Running Elite’s Tyler McCandless grabbed second in 20:18, with Boulder Track Club’s Austin Richmond rounding out the top three in 20:33. Fast and Flurry-ous 4M XC January 26, 2014 Boulder, CO 160 Finishers - Timing by: Boulder Road Runners - Elevation: Start/ Finish = 5,430’ - Course Records: unknown
ellie keyser leads kristen arendt at the fast and flurry-ous XC race.
The wind was the topic of the day as participants converged on Harlow Platts Community Park in Boulder for the Fast and Flurry-ous Cross Country 4 Mile, hosted by the Boulder Running Company. There were a plethora of Colorado’s top runners out on the course, including former Olympians and National Champions alike. The race course design and format made the event extremely exciting to watch. The 4 mile men’s and women’s races were separated into two different heats, each consisting of three loops. Each loop headed west
around Viele Lake and back across the bridge. phoning it in When I’m running solo, I’d like to believe that I’m engaged in pensive activity. Communing with nature during the solitude of the early morning and sorting out the secrets of life, solving world problems, or outlining the next Pulitzer Prize–winning novel.
The reality is I may begin my run with a brief internal debate regarding U.S. economics, but I’m quickly moving on to not-so-scholarly ruminations. I’m often pondering life’s less-than-critical questions such as can you decide that you’re indecisive? Why are things typed up and written down? Is it an effective training method to periodically hold your breath as long as you can during a run? Why do we say an alarm clock is going off when it’s on? My mind is a series of rapid segues with no rational connection involved. Despite my fairly witless thoughts, I enjoy the solitude of running and am sufficiently entertained. When not focused on key issues like coming up with the synonym for thesaurus, the first half of my run often produces a list of things to do, and the second half is spent trying to remember just what those things were. Eleven-letter, memory-aiding acronyms are not uncommon by the end of a long run. Many times my run ends with my sprinting into the house, waving off conversation with my wife while scrambling for pen and paper as I repetitively mouth acronyms like ABSORLATION. For the majority of my running career, I avoided bringing along forms of distraction or entertainment such as music or podcasts. Admittedly, I did dabble with audio books for a few runs. However, that was a recipe for failure given my inability to stay focused during a run on anything much beyond a mesmerizing five-word sentence. I quickly opted for the abridged versions but completely gave up upon learning there was no abridged version of the abridged version. Being a music lover, I have in the more recent past taken advantage of the relative ease in which I can pipe my favorite songs into my sweaty ears during a run. Just me, my iPod shuffle, empty streets, and my jolting my neighbors awake by belting out a chorus from AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.” I’ve seen a lot over the years as far as what others choose to bring along for company or entertainment on a run, including the standard items, such as an infant (or two) in a running stroller or a dog or motivating music. But I’ve also seen the oddity of an elderly runner pushing his wife down the street in a wheelchair, as well as runners gliding along with what appears to be a five-course meal attached to their waist belt. I’ve also been amused by the lady “walking” her dog while she’s driving her car. I’ve been privy to a man minus his skivvies: A naked guy on a bike rode by me in New York City at 5:00 a.m. yelling, “Top of the morning!” Every now and then I do witness things, like the birthday suit bicyclist, that cause me to break stride and do a running double take. A few years back while I was running along the gorgeous and bucolic paths of a local state park with the rising sun reflecting off a still lake, I saw a runner coming up over the crest of the hill ahead. At first I couldn’t believe my eyes, or my ears. Couldn’t be. Wouldn’t be. Shouldn’t be. Ah, but it was. The Lord of the Rings was approaching, but I don’t mean someone resembling the Witch-king of Angmar. I mean rings, as in a phone call. There he was, a man answering the cell phone he was carrying (his ring tone the less-than-idyllic sound of MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This”). Mr. Fartlek Fiber Optics with the truly mobile phone was bringing new meaning to the term long-distance communication. Now, I understand there may be a need to stay connected from 54 coloradorunnermag.com
time to time and be in touch through a cell phone regarding an emergency or whatever. However, I encountered him on a trail many miles from the nearest parking lot, and his ear-splitting conversation clearly was not with 911 but with a more-than-jovial friend on the other end of the line. His thunderous voice and overenthusiastic laughter were in direct contrast to my harmonious rendezvous with nature. As squirrels scattered for the park’s higher ground and terrified ducks rapidly exited the lake, it would have been rhetorical should he have voiced the slogan “Can you hear me now?” Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote, “O hark. O Hear! How thin and clear.” This was more “The park. O dear! The din, I sneer!” As I ran by I gave him a disdainful look and sarcastically said, “Really?” Through subsequent years I still remain irked by Mr. Ringing Runner, but I admit to seeing the emergence of more running and cell phone use. I’ve witnessed cell phones immediately materializing from the waistbands of runners as they cross a finish line. I’ve also seen pictures being taken on a cell phone right before the starting gun goes off and undoubtedly then uploaded to Twitter, with 23 reply tweets posted before the runner crosses the finish line. In more ways than one, the times they are a changing. I suppose, on further reflection, that I shouldn’t be so hard on peripatetic phone callers. At least they’re out running rather than perfecting their touch-tone mobility abilities or texting-in-motion talents through a more sedentary position. Perhaps I need to simply accept things a bit more.
