2017-18 CONCERT SEASON
NEW IN 2018 Vanguard Performances at the Ent Center for the Arts
FESTIVAL “The Best of All Possible Worlds” Leonard Bernstein at 100
Sharing music with friends is one of
the great joys of my life. This season’s
concerts represent the finest, most
energized performances available from
our outrageously gifted musicians. I
am especially pleased to present this
powerful season of music from the
Colorado Springs Philharmonic.
The center attraction of the season is a
ten-concert, six-week festival dedicated to Leonard Bernstein on his 100th
Birthday. The Best of All Possible Worlds
begins with Bernstein’s joyous First
Symphony and ends with a live cinema
presentation of West Side Story. Along the
way, you’ll get to know “Lenny” in all the multiple facets of his personality – his
private contemplations and his public persona. He was more than a composer, more than
just a conductor that changed the course of American music. Bernstein was a man ahead of his time, and unafraid to envision a better world.
We’re also delighted that the Al and Leigh Buettner Vanguard Performances will take up residence at the brand new Ent Center for the Arts. You are invited to be the first audience to enjoy innovative performances in its intimate and acoustically perfected concert hall.
The Philharmonic Pops has the most entertaining performances, with something for every
taste and appetite. Broadway classics from Rodgers and Hammerstein are on tap, as well as hits from Fleetwood Mac and cinematic legend John Williams.
For now more than ninety years, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic has been a musical ambassador and cultural citizen serving our community with beautiful music.
I invite you to join me and the rest of the Philharmonic family in the new season.

THE
The most celebrated musician of his time, Leonard Bernstein (1918 – 1990) dedicated his life and career to the joy of music and the elevation of humanity. In his centennial year, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic will follow in his footsteps, making music and proclaiming the power of creativity to overcome intolerance. Bernstein gave voice to music and made it come alive for generations of concertgoers. As a conductor, he was a champion for great American composition, and introduced American audiences to the likes of Gustav Mahler and Jean Sibelius. On Broadway, he turned Times Square upside down, speaking a language of rhythm and joyous bluster. Doing justice to “Lenny’s” legacy means digging deeper than just the music. In life, he was an innovator, a communicator of the first order, and a stern advocate for peace and civil rights. In our time, Bernstein’s words (like his music) ring with authority and the rhythm of life. From January to March 2018, the Philharmonic presents a six week festival dedicated to Leonard Bernstein, including five concert weekends, broadcasts, lectures, film viewings, and unique events offered by festival partners.
