POPS BIOGRAPHY ANDRES LOPERA, conductor Colombian Conductor Andres Lopera is one of the leading Latin-American artists in the United States with nearly a decade of engagements in both North and South America. A passionate conductor who believes in the transformational power of music, Lopera has directed the Oregon Symphony, Toledo Symphony, New World Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, and Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra just in the past three seasons. He has also appeared with professional and youth orchestras throughout Central and South America, including Honduras, where he led the Youth Orchestra of the Americas in a musical camp for both young and professional musicians. In 2012, Lopera was appointed as Music Director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, for which he oversaw 12 different orchestral ensembles with more than 450 students. Also an accomplished trombonist, Lopera’s musical development started with the Red de Bandas de Antioquia and Red de Escuelas de Musica de Medellin, both El Sistema like programs developed in Colombia. Lopera earned a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from New England Conservatory of Music and in Trombone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to these programs, he was awarded a double degree in Conducting and Trombone from the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia. His principal teachers are Hugh Wolff and David Loebel, with additional studies with Ludovic Morlot, Michael Tilson Thomas and Marin Alsop.

HILARY KOLE, vocalist Hilary Kole is currently starring in two symphonic shows, Over The Rainbow, A Tribute to the Artistry of Judy Garland and The Music and Magic of James Bond which are on tour nationwide. She also co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed, Off-Broadway reviews, Our Sinatra, and Singing Astaire.

She began her professional career at the legendary Rainbow Room as the youngest singer ever to grace the stage. From there, she made her concert hall debut at Lincoln Center and has appeared at Carnegie Hall in a Tribute to Oscar Peterson as well as at the Canadian Memorial to Dr. Peterson at Roy Thompson Hall alongside Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock. Additional major concert appearances include headlining in New York City at Town Hall, The Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. Kole also headlines throughout the world at major Jazz Festivals including the Umbria Jazz Festival, The Montreal Jazz Festival, as well as throughout Japan. As a recording artist, Kole has recorded with music legends David Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Michel LeGrand, Hank Jones, John Pizzarelli, Monty Alexander, Kenny Barron, and Freddy Cole among others. Kole’s debut recording, Haunted Heart was released to critical acclaim in 2009, (Gold Disc Award in Japan, and 4 stars in Downbeat) and her sophomore recording, You Are There was named as “Record Of The Year” in USA Today, as well as the 2010 Bistro Award for “Record of the Year”. FAMILY BIOGRAPHY JOHN KINZIE, percussion John Kinzie was born in Pittsburgh and began his musical studies on the piano at the age of five. When band was introduced in the schools, he quickly switched to the drums. He received scholarships to the University of Toledo and the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Robert Bell, Richard Weiner and Paul Yancich. Prior to joining the Colorado Symphony as Principal Percussionist in 1985, he was Principal Percussionist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, a position he won at the age of 19.

Kinzie has appeared with Strings in the Mountains, The National Repertory Orchestra, and the Grand Teton music festivals and has been a featured soloist with the Toledo Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, Yale School of Music, Grand Teton Music Festival and the Colorado Symphony on numerous occasions. He also performs with the Colorado Symphony chamber group “Once Upon a Time,” a group formed to inspire the imaginations of young schoolchildren and to excite them about music. In 1996 he became the head of the percussion division of the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver where he teaches percussion and timpani performance as well as percussion ensemble, master classes, and percussion pedagogy and repertoire. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, skiing, and hanging out with his wife, Colorado Symphony violinist Karen Kinzie, and their four sons, Ryan, Karl, Grant and Reid.

STEVE HEARN, percussion Assistant principal timpani/section percussion with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Steve Hearn is also the principal timpanist of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and a founding member of the Lumos Percussion Group. He has appeared with the Strings in the Mountains, Grand Teton, and Cabrillo music festivals and has been a featured concerto soloist with the Colorado Symphony, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, among others. He has performed at several Percussive Arts Society International Conventions as a featured soloist and chamber musician. Similarly, he was a percussionist in the Colorado premier of Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun’s Water Passion after S. Matthew. Hearn previously held the position as Percussionist/Timpanist in the U.S. Army Field Band, Washington, D.C. were he toured the 48 continental states performing concerts with the Concert Band and Chorus. Active as an educator, chamber musician and drum set specialist, he was the assistant to Robert van Sice at Rotterdam’s Conservatory of Music and was the Director of Percussion Studies at New Mexico State University. As a drum set specialist, he has performed various styles of jazz and rock throughout the Chicago area with the Ramesdell Jazz Quintet and the pop/rock group The Others. Hearn received a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from New Mexico State University, and the prestigious Artist Performing Diploma from Rotterdam’s Conservatory, The Netherlands. Hearn is an active artist/educator for Adams Musical Instruments, Zildjian Cymbals, Freer Percussion Products, TheBoxKit.com, and Evans Drumheads.

FAMILY BIOGRAPHY MICHAEL VAN WIRT, percussion In the space of a few short years, Michael Van Wirt has established himself as an emerging professional percussionist across the United States. In addition to his appointment as Section Percussionist in the Colorado Symphony, Van Wirt has performed with the Houston Symphony and was a New World Symphony Fellow during the 2014-2015 season.

Van Wirt was also a member of Seraphic Fire’s Firebird Chamber Orchestra, serving as timpanist from 2012-2015. He is an alumnus of the Aspen Music Festival, Colorado College Summer Music Festival, and the Alan Abel Summer Percussion Seminar. Van Wirt has performed across the United States and abroad. He has studied in Denmark at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, in Japan at the Nagoya Institute for the Arts, and performed in Australia and New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal. He also studied the music of Trinidad with steel-pan master Tom Miller. Van Wirt was a founding member of Miller’s band “Pan Nation” and performed with the group throughout Colorado and the Midwest.

Van Wirt was given the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Performance and the Frank Toth Leadership Award from the University of Denver, where he received his Bachelors of Music under Professor John Kinzie. He attended the University of Miami under Matt Strauss and Svet Stoyanov and obtained his Masters Degree in music in 2012.

MICHAEL TETREAULT, percussion Michael Tetreault holds a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and a Master of Music Degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK. He holds positions as Principal Timpanist of the Central City Opera, Fort Collins Symphony and Percussionist with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and Boulder Philharmonic. He is also on the percussion faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Tetreault has performed domestically and abroad with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Colorado Symphony, Colorado Ballet, Orchestre de Paris, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra (Dublin), Ulster Orchestra (Belfast), and the Halle Orchestra (Manchester). As a chamber musician he has collaborated with Roomful of Teeth, Quattro Mani, Alarm Will Sound and Ann Murray. He has performed at festivals in England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Germany, and France and has recorded extensively for Albany Records, Bis Records, Warner Bros. Records, Bridge Records, Sony Classical, RTE Radio/TV and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The Colorado Symphony is excited to announce the return of our Community Ticketing Initiative (CTI). Launched in October 2014, the program was created in an effort to reach new and diverse audiences. The CTI supports the City of Denver’s Imagine 2020 Cultural Plan which seeks to broaden access to the cultural arts for all Denver residents.

Through the CTI, the Colorado Symphony is pleased to offer complimentary tickets to children and families throughout the 2015/16 season. The Colorado Symphony offers something for everyone. Concerts include classical, holiday, family, even music from favorite movies, cartoons, and comic books! Colorado Symphony concerts are exciting for all ages – and an experience you won’t forget!

Who is Served by the CTI? Through partnerships with local agencies and community organizations, the CTI primarily serves low-income individuals and families for whom cost is a barrier to concert attendance.
