WELCOME Happy Holidays! Every family has its own traditions for celebrating the holidays, and ours is no exception.

But finding time in the kitchen in December is always a bit of a “Christmas miracle” because our plates are also full every year with family visits and my annual New Year’s Eve concert. For the last decade, that concert has been with the Houston Symphony. This year, though, is the start of a new tradition: we’ll be with you right here in Boettcher Concert Hall as I conduct our Colorado Symphony’s A Night in Vienna concert on New Year’s Eve! We’ll get an early start on ringing (and bowing, and drumming...) in the New Year at 6:30 p.m., so we can all go out and enjoy the fireworks and festivities that make up our own New Year’s Eve traditions. And here’s yet another reason to celebrate New Year’s Eve with your Colorado Symphony: that night, we’ll announce from stage the grand prize winner of our 2016 fundraising raffle. One lucky Symphony supporter will be taking home a 2016 Honda Pilot, generously donated by Rocky Mountain Honda Dealers Association. Our raffle is just one of many ways you can support your Colorado Symphony. So from our Colorado Symphony family to yours, thank you for your loyal support this year, and for many more to come. With best wishes for a happy holiday season and a bright New Year ahead, Brett Mitchell Music Director Designate Colorado Symphony

From Denver to Haiti:

AN ORCHESTRA ON THE ROAD By Rachel Trignano

Catherine Beeson is a busy woman. As a musician and education leader for the Colorado Symphony, she performs double-duty as Assistant Principal Viola and Director of Community Education Programs. “I play music because I love it and I can’t live without it,” says Beeson, “and I bring it to other people because there is nothing more rewarding than creating community by sharing.”

18 SOUNDINGS 2016-2017 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

The Haiti Youth Orchestra Beeson cultivates and grows this community through Colorado Symphony’s MusiCurious education programs, which bring on-site mentorship to K-12 students throughout metro Denver while drawing 25,000 attendees to Youth Concerts every year. MusiCurious has expanded to include adult education programs and provide sensory-friendly concerts, as well. Catherine’s goals are as ambitious as her workload, and it’s little surprise that she found a kindred spirit in Denver native and local high school student Zach Harris, who founded the Haiti Youth Orchestra under his parents’ non-profit organization Road to Hope Haiti. Zach, who has two adopted Haitian siblings, was just fourteen when he started the Haiti Youth Orchestra in 2012 and began supporting Orchestra St. Pierre, a high school youth orchestra in the small, inland community of Mirebalais. In 2014, he reached out to the Colorado Symphony for help in collecting instruments for the students. “Our initial goal was to collect instruments to support Zach’s project, and we did for two years,” Beeson explains. “We eventually began brainstorming a partnership that could create a system of self-sustaining youth orchestras in the many communities and towns far from Port-au-Prince, where access to arts programs is limited.” SOUNDINGS 2016-2017 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG 19

This partnership eventually culminated in a week-long trip to Haiti in June 2016 for three Colorado Symphony musicians: trombonist Paul Naslund, clarinetist Abby Raymond, and violist Helen McDermott. They arrived in Port-Au-Prince on June 6 with donated instruments and supplies in tow, tired but ready to teach the equally-eager Haiti Youth Orchestra students. Within just one day of side-by-side lessons with the Symphony musicians, Mirebalais’ Youth Orchestra members were able to play two songs all the way through. One of the first pieces they learned and performed was “Le Desalinienne,” Haiti’s national anthem—which they have since performed at the beginning of their school year and to celebrate the opening of another school.

"Music literally vibrates at a frequency that causes us to change on a molecular level. I am called, compelled, to bring that to everyone I can." – Catherine Beeson This was mere weeks before Hurricane Matthew descended upon Haiti in October, hitting Mirebelais with severe winds and rain. While the community was spared the worst of the storm’s damages, it underwent days of darkness and extreme weather. Incredibly, three students from the HYO—cellist Fencia Clervoyant, her older brother violinist Peter Clervoyant, and trumpeter David Marcellus—were still able to travel to Denver for a week-long visit of shadowing, receiving instruction, and socializing with the Colorado Symphony musicians this November, which can be read about on our blog. continued on page 22

All of Haiti Youth Orchestra’s programs—including the students’ November visit to Denver—are supported by Zach Harris’ own fundraising efforts, and have been since the orchestra's founding in 2012. It’s a testament to his dedication and mission-driven work: “Music has played such a large role in my life. I loved the idea of taking energetic, young kids who had never even seen some of these instruments and [helping them create] their very own orchestra.” Beeson shares the same passion for making and sharing music. “Music literally vibrates at a frequency that causes us to change on a molecular level,” she says. “I am called, compelled, to bring that to everyone I can.” And that she does. We know the influence and results of the Colorado Symphony’s music education programs are a success not just because of statistics, but because the students tell us so. We keep their thank you notes and drawings at our desks next to our family pictures and pen cups.

Programs like these wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of you, our Colorado Symphony patrons and donors. Your ticket purchases are vital and valued, and make up about 43% of our revenue. The rest of our operating costs come from donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS The 2016-2017 Colorado Symphony Concert Season marks the 33rd year of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Symphony, the chorus has grown, over the past three decades, into a nationally-respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of 180 volunteers joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts, to repeat critical acclaim. The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, where it has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Dallas Symphony. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing many great masterworks under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, and David Zinman. Among the recordings the CSO Chorus has made is a NAXOS release of Roy Harris’s Symphony No. 4. The Chorus is also featured on a recent Hyperion release of the Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem and Stephen Hough’s Missa Mirabilis. In 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Chorus, Duain Wolfe conducted the Chorus on a 3-country, 2-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl, and Prague, and in 2016 the Chorus returned to Europe for concerts in Paris, Strasbourg, and Munich. From Evergreen to Lochbuie, and Boulder to Castle Rock, singers travel each week to rehearsals and performances in Denver totaling about 80 a year. The Colorado Symphony continues to be grateful for the excellence and dedication of this remarkable, all-volunteer ensemble! For an audition appointment, call 303.308.2483.

A COLORADO CHRISTMAS TRANSLATIONS CAROLS AND LULLABIES: CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTHWEST Alegría With happiness and joy, Mary and her loving husband go to Bethlehem, carrying with them a powerful God. When they arrive in Bethlehem, they ask the innkeeper for a place. Everyone saw that they were poor…they could not find a place. When the little birds in the woods see the wife and husband passing by, they sing beautiful melodies with their harmonious trills. Chiquirriquitín Oh, the little tiny one in the manger, hiding in the hay, beloved little one of my soul. In the manger behind the portal of the stable, one can discover Mary, Joseph and the child. Between the mule and the ox, God has been born and it is a poor stable that has received Him.

Campana sobre Campana Bell after bell, and another bell more. Peek out the window and you will see the little boy. Bethlehem, bells from Bethlehem. The angels are ringing them. What news will they tell? After gathering your flock, little shepherd, where will you go? I will go to the manger to take cheese, butter and wine. If the stars are still shining, where will you go, little shepherd? I will go by the child to see if I can sleep next to his cradle. A WORLD OF JOY Swahili: Peace to all people. Glory in the highest. Glory to God. Joy to the world. Spanish: Rejoice! He reigns. We sing together in unity. And on the earth, and on the sea, Praise resounds. Great praise resounds.

A COLORADO CHRISTMAS AUDIENCE SING-ALONGS A CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL Joy to the world, the Lord is come; let earth receive her king. Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay. Remember Christ, our Savior, was born upon this day To save us all from Satan’s pow’r when we were gone astray. Oh tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, Oh tidings of comfort and joy. Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies. With th’angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King.

Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh, O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way. Bells on Bobtail ring, making spirits bright, What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh, hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Come and behold Him, born the king of angels, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

A COLORADO CHRISTMAS AUDIENCE SING-ALONGS SING A MERRY CHRISTMAS Frosty the Snowman was a jolly, happy soul. With a corn cob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the Snowman was a fairy tale they say. He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found. But when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around! Frosty the Snowman was alive as he could be. And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me. Have yourself a merry little Christmas. Let your heart be light. From now on, our troubles will be out of sight. Have yourself a merry little Christmas. Make the yuletide gay. From now on our troubles will be miles away. Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore. Faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more. Through the years we all will be together if the fates allow. Hang a shining star upon the highest bough, And have yourself a merry little Christmas now. Sleigh bells ring, are you list’nin’? In the lane snow is glist’nin’' A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight, walkin’ in a winter wonderland! Gone away is the bluebird, here to stay is a new bird. He sings a love song as we go along walkin’ in a winter wonderland! In the meadow, we can build a snowman and pretend that he is Parson Brown. He’ll say “Are you married?” We’ll say "No man!" But you can do the job while you’re in town. Later on, we’ll conspire as we dream by the fire To face unafraid the plans that we made walkin’ in a winter wonderland! Here comes Santa Claus! here comes Santa Claus! Right down Santa Claus Lane! Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer are pulling on the rein. Bells are ringing, children singing, all is merry and bright. Hang your stockings and say your prayers ‘cause Santa Claus comes tonight. Jolly old Saint Nicholas, lean your ear this way! Don’t you tell a single soul what I’m going to say. Christmas Eve is coming soon, now, you dear old man; Whisper what you’ll bring to me; tell me if you can!

Legends. Heroes. And Miracles. WATCH ANCIENT MYTHS COME TO LIFE Everyone likes a good story, and Chinese culture has 5,000 years full of them. Historic epics, timeless literary classics, and mystical folklore make up this world of deities and magic. Each Shen Yun performance includes short dance stories of heroes who battle demons, fly up to the heavens, and visit deep-sea palaces. Packed with action, courage, and humor, these tales embody the wisdom and virtues of ancient China.

“Magnificent choreography and artistry and dance...” — Irwin Cotler, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada

“Dramatic sound ... the orchestra is exceptional...” — Dr. Sarah Parks, assistant professor of music and director of music program, St. Norbert College

“Really out of this world! ... You have to see it to believe it.” — Christine Walevska, world-renowned cellist, saw Shen Yun 4 times

“Simply astounding to watch and a pleasure to the ear.” — Opera Online Melodies That Capture the Spirit of Ancient China The origins of Chinese music can be dated back to distant antiquity. Ancient Chinese instruments share a deep connection with Heaven and Earth. The delicate notes of the plucked pipa evoke a sense of celestial realms. The enchanting sound of the 4,000-year-old erhu mimics the human voice. Leading the melody amidst a full Western orchestra, they create a profound musical experience that resonates deep in the heart.
