Brahms

Welcome to Boettcher Concert Hall! As we enter the final months of our 2024/25 Season, there is still so much extraordinary music to look forward to. From Beethoven’s electrifying Seventh Symphony (March 21-23) to Gabriela Montero’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto (April 25-27), and culminating in our season finale featuring the incomparable Augustin Hadelich performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (May 30 - June 1), this season is guaranteed to conclude on a high note.

Looking ahead, I am thrilled to share a preview of what’s to come in our 2025/26 Season beginning this fall. It promises to be an extraordinary year filled with unforgettable moments, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you. Some of my personal highlights include:

• Classics Opening Weekend: My dear friend Pinchas Zukerman will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto on a program that also includes Respighi’s Pines of Rome — an unforgettable start to a new season from September 19-21.

• Lang Lang at Boettcher: On March 14, 2026, world-renowned pianist Lang Lang will grace our stage for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in a performance you won’t want to miss.

• A World Premiere: Experience the debut of Christopher Theofanidis’ exhilarating new Double Concerto for Violin and Percussion, featuring Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and percussionist Svet Stoyanov from March 20-22, 2026..

• Season Finale: We will close with Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony, “Resurrection,” a profound journey through life, death, and renewal from May 29-31.

Your steadfast support is the heartbeat of our orchestra, inspiring us to reach ever greater artistic heights. As we close this chapter and look toward the promise of a new season, I am filled with gratitude and anticipation for the musical journeys that lie ahead. Your unwavering support fuels our creativity and ambition, and we are forever grateful to you for making it possible to bring this music to life. Thank you for being an integral part of our Colorado Symphony community.

Warmly,

COLORADO

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IF I AM LATE?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP?

During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY?

We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos. Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT?

You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS?

Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT?

Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE?

Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?

We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders. Updates, cancelations, or changes will be posted on coloradosymphony.org and on the event page for the concert.

Strings of Excellence

Yumi Hwang-Williams’ 25 Years of Leadership with the Colorado Symphony

A concertmaster’s responsibilities are both vital and multifaceted, demanding technical brilliance, artistic vision, and a capacity to lead. It’s a position that anchors an orchestra, setting the tone for collaboration while serving as a bridge between the conductor and musicians. In the Colorado Symphony, this role has been held for over two decades by a violinist whose journey and artistry have shaped the orchestra’s identity and enriched the cultural fabric of Denver.

Yumi Hwang-Williams is globally recognized for her extraordinary musicianship, incredible technical skill, and captivating tonal beauty which she skillfully conveys through enchanting interpretations of the classics and the works of present-day composers. With a host of accolades to her name, Hwang-Williams adds yet another this year as she celebrates her 25th season as Concertmaster for the Colorado Symphony, havingjoined the orchestra in a full-time capacity in 2000. Readers who want to learn more about Yumi’s journey can explore her 20th-anniversary feature here: https://coloradosymphony.org/where-words-fail-music-speaks/

“When I was at the beginning of my orchestral career, the veterans of the industry said things like, ‘it goes very fast and you’ll be living in five-year increments,’ and I’ve come to find how true that is,” said Hwang-Williams. “This full life of concerts almost every weekend with a barrage of repertoire, old and new, teaching, personal projects, chamber music concerts, and the business of life make time pass very quickly.”

It’s been five years since the Colorado Symphony celebrated Yumi’s 20th anniversary with performances of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto as the opening weekend of the 2019/20 Season. That season also featured a number of concertmaster solos including two giants in the repertoire: Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) The March 5-7 performances of Ein Heldenleben turned out to be the last concerts in Boettcher Concert Hall for over a year following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, causing an abrupt and unceremonious end to the anniversary season.

The Symphony forged ahead during the pandemic with a focus and fortitude that would become a hallmark of the period. The entire organization galvanized to stay connected and provided as much music for the public as possible within the ever-changing health and safety restrictions.

“It was strange to play outdoors, six feet apart, masked, in front of a hundred or so people, not knowing if and when indoor performances could resume,” she recalled. “But we came out of that dark time with strength and have been thriving, infused with much new energy in leadership, talent, great programs, and audiences.”

In the summer of 2022, Yumi was asked to record with the London Symphony a new solo work by Emmy Award-winning composer John Wineglass. The work was titled #elijah in memory of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old black man who died tragically at the hands of police and paramedics in Aurora. Described as a gentle soul, he was studying massage therapy and was an avid amateur violinist. Playing #elijah was a profound experience for Yumi and it provided an opportunity to play on a Guadagnini violin on loan from the Denver Violins that would ultimately come into her possession — an encounter that marked the turning point of an extraordinary journey.

“The piece is compact and powerful and captures both the beauty and brutality, but also provides solace,” she said. “It was an incredibly moving experience for me to be a part of this project especially given my local connection and the outpouring of support and protests that his death had ignited. The London Symphony records at St Luke’s which is a completely renovated historical church that was transformed into a recording and concert venue for them.”

The Denver Violins, which had set up a wonderful shop in the Daniels & Fisher Tower at the end of 2021, had fortunately secured the Guadagnini for sale. “I had fallen in love with the sound and capabilities of this violin and had to find a way to keep it in Denver,” she said. Recognizing its significance, a collective effort emerged allowing its voice to be heard rather than risk disappearing into a private collection. With the collaboration of friends and colleagues, The Guad Society was formed in 2023 to make this vision a reality.

“I have the privilege and honor of playing this violin for several years forward. It’s a dream come true for me after decades of searching and provides me with more inspiration and exploration. I am so grateful to the Guad Society for making this possible and to the Colorado Symphony, without whom, we all would not be here today to experience the music together.”

Over the past five years, Yumi has also forged meaningful new connections, including a close friendship with world-class Mezzo-Soprano and Colorado native Michelle DeYoung.

L-R: Conductor Miran Vaupotić, Yumi Hwang-Williams, composer John Wineglass during the recording of #elijah

Their bond, which formed during the pandemic, led to the creation of Ensemble Charité. What started as a professional admiration quickly grew into a shared passion project.

“Our mission is to create beautiful concerts that highlight and partner with a charity who receives the proceeds of our concerts,” said Hwang-Williams. “It’s a labor of love borne out of our desire to give back to our communities through our music. We’re happy to have given several memorable concerts and have donated to Bal Swan Children’s Center, Genesis Housing, and Preservery Foundation (one-year partnership).” Please visit www.ensemblecharite.com for more information.

The friendship between Yumi and Michelle took on even greater significance when they shared the stage for one of the most meaningful performances of Yumi’s career: Mahler’s Third Symphony during the 2023/24 season. This performance carried deep personal significance for Yumi and her family.

“My husband, Daniel, came out of retirement with the Philadelphia Orchestra to add to our wonderful horn section, our daughter sang with the Children’s Chorale, Michelle was the soloist, and our Music Director Peter Oundjian, whom Daniel and I have known and worked with for thirty years, conducted. The stars had aligned for all of us to be together on stage experiencing this extraordinary piece of music.”

This deeply personal performance was just one of many moments that have defined Yumi’s tenure with the Colorado Symphony. Conductor Marin Alsop, who served as music director for the Colorado Symphony from 19932005, looks back fondly on her role in bringing Hwang-Williams to Denver.

“I’m thrilled to have been a part of starting her 25-year legacy with the Colorado Symphony,” said Alsop. “The orchestra is so fortunate to have her—she’s the whole package. A truly gifted violinist and a kind and generous person.”

Peter Oundjian, Music Director Designate, reflected on Yumi’s immense contributions: “Yumi’s profound impact on the Colorado Symphony and the Denver community over her 25 seasons as Concertmaster is nothing short of extraordinary. Her artistry, leadership, and unwavering dedication have been the cornerstone of this orchestra’s excellence. Having had the joy of collaborating with her over many years, I can attest to the inspiration she brings to every note she plays. Her ability to connect with her colleagues and audiences alike is extraordinary, leaving an indelible mark on the Symphony’s legacy and shaping its future for generations to come.”

Of creating music with her Colorado Symphony colleagues, Yumi marveled that, “There is no other endeavor where eighty-plus humans are all working toward a single goal, performing in real time to create a living organism of live art while curating this incredible repertoire.” While performing as part of a large ensemble brings a tremendous sense of comradery, she also enjoys the added challenge of stepping out of the ensemble as a featured soloist.

She’ll do just that as the orchestra commemorates her 25-year milestone with three performances of the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello alongside Principal Cello Seoyeon Min from May 16-18.

And next season, Denver audiences will get to experience a world premiere of American composer Christopher Theofanidis’ latest composition – a brand-new double concerto for Violin and Percussion. Commissioned by the Colorado Symphony, this concerto will feature Yumi and dynamic percussionist Svet Stoyanov in a thrilling collaboration with the orchestra from March 20-22, 2026.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have a solo appearance each season with the Colorado Symphony. Every time a symphony musician is front and center, it’s a memorable occasion for both musician and the audience as they have an opportunity to hear that individual outside of the orchestral sound,” added Hwang-Williams. “I’m so thrilled to share the stage with Seoyoen in May and look forward to collaborating with Svet on this debut performance next March.”

As Yumi reflects on her 25-year journey with the Colorado Symphony, her legacy stands as a testament to the transformative power of music and the enduring impact of dedicated artistry. “Music has the power to connect us in ways words cannot,” she said. “It has been my greatest joy to share this journey with my incredibly talented colleagues, our audience, and the next generation of musicians. I look forward to many more moments of inspiration together.”

Don’t miss your chance to celebrate Yumi’s Silver Jubilee with the Colorado Symphony from May 16-18 as she performs the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello alongside Principal Cellist Seoyeon Min at Boettcher Concert Hall. Tickets are available at coloradosymphony.org.

BOETTCHER CONCERT HALL

INFORMATION

FOR COLORADO SYMPHONY CONCERT TICKETS AND INFORMATION: call 303.623.7876.

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more. Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex. We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. To review the full policy and prohibited items, please visit artscomplex.com.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts. Concessions are managed by Centerplate. Please see the FAQ page regarding policy on food and beverage in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Colorado Symphony reserves the right to change the concessions policy at any time. The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.

THE GUILD SHOP: Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, The Shop (as it's affectionately known) is the perfect place to pick up unique gifts, seasonal fashions, and of course recordings produced by, and of, the Colorado Symphony. The Shop is operated by a dedicated group of Symphony supporters and enthusiasts year-round.
