Happy we are to have the chance to wish you a Merry Christmas!

Those magical words of Christmas highlight the joys of the season here in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Chorus has been working for months to bring the best of its many vocal talents to the thrilling music of the holiday season.

Now singing in its 32nd season, we notice that a rather significant number of the singers in the Colorado Symphony Chorus weren’t even born when the chorus sang its inaugural season in 1984-85. Their fresh young talent complements beautifully the highly experienced veteran singers who have already contributed two or three decades of their vocal gifts to Colorado Symphony concerts.

Contributed is indeed the operative word, for these dedicated singers are volunteers who contribute hundreds of hours each year to honing their skills and mastering the intricacies of the challenging music of our culture’s greatest orchestral-choral literature.

But consider their reward for this contribution -- an intimate connection with the creative genius of Beethoven, Mahler, Holst, Handel, Orff, Verdi, Mozart, Vaughan Williams, and Walton.

And that’s just this year. The list of musical experiences goes on with world premieres -- like William Hill’s The Raven last spring. They work with great conductors and soloists; they sing in pops concerts; they sing for special occasions (like Papal visits). They participate in recordings – the recent Colorado Symphony/Hyperion release of Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem and the premier recording of Stephen Hough’s Missa Mirabilis. They sing in festivals with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra. So, though they never see a salary check, they do indeed have many enriching life experiences as thoroughly rewarding compensation.

Home Alone – December 22, the film, accompanied by live music from the orchestra and chorus.

And make particular note of Handel’s monumental Messiah, December 18-20, performed by these forces with a fresh, exciting vision for a musical telling of this powerful story. This year, we add a Messiah Sing Along on Sunday afternoon for all of you who are eager to participate in those magnificent choruses.

You don’t have to go to a galaxy far, far away to get your Star Wars fix this winter – just come to Boettcher Concert Hall. Whether your loyalties lie with the Imperial Forces or with the Rebel Troops, you’re sure to enjoy these themes spanning the parsecs between Denver and Dagobah.

When George Lucas was filming Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) and needed an epic film score to accompany his space odyssey, he reached out to his friend Steven Spielberg for recommendations. Spielberg had recently finished his movie Jaws (1975) and recommended the composer for that film, John Williams. This would be the start of an amazing number of iconic scores that Williams created for Lucas. This concert will explore the music of the legendary John Williams, who now has 135 studio recordings and over 40 Oscar nominations, through those iconic Star Wars movie scores.

This Star Wars concert is just one part of the Colorado Symphony’s Geek Series, affectionately named for its programming aimed at fans of sci-fi films, comic books, action movies, and more. The Colorado Symphony is making headlines for the innovative nature of this concert series, with features on the front page of the Wall Street Journal and on MSNBC the last few months.

Many people might not realize that music for many contemporary films (as well as for video games and other modern media) uses the same instruments and musical language as symphonic literature by Beethoven, Brahms, and Holst. For example, the audience will see and hear the same orchestral instruments during the Weekend of Star Wars concert as during the Night in Vienna classical concert coming up on New Year’s Eve. Tristan Rennie, Colorado Symphony Second/Assistant Principal Bassoonist and self-proclaimed geek, is a big fan of the Geek Series programming and the impact these concerts have on audience members. “When you hear the music, that’s all you need to be transported into the story,” Tristan says. “We geek fans love the way our favorite movies, books, and video games transport us into new worlds to be explored. The expansive music for these movies has that same ability to transport us to our favorite galaxies, SOUNDINGS 2015-2016 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG 19

kingdoms, castles, and beyond. You come to these concerts because you enjoy the films, and the live music makes the story only that much better.”

Tristan often likes to dress up for these shows and encourages audience members to do so as well. He says there’s nothing quite like getting to the hall and seeing not only the audience in their favorite geek garb but all of the musicians too.

While the Geek programming might be more lighthearted than the traditional Masterworks, the music certainly isn’t easy. This is especially true for the brass section of the orchestra that is responsible for many of the dramatic bursts that help to make scenes from films like Star Wars so powerful and unforgettable. John Sipher is the Colorado Symphony’s new Principal Trombone as of the start of the 2015/16 season. When asked about what it’s like to play the Star Wars concert, his first thought is how tiring it is to sustain that level of playing for an entire concert. “Anything John Williams, particularly Star Wars, is some of the most challenging work we brass players will play throughout the year. In classical programming, brass is usually used sparingly, but in these concerts we play more often, a lot louder, and for longer periods than we are used to. That’s what makes it so great though, the challenge is what makes it so fun.”

The Colorado Symphony takes on the 2015/16 season with more Geek Series programming than ever. MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Carolyn Kunicki

Carolyn has been a musician nearly her entire life. She showed an interest in music at an early age and spent much of her youth playing the family piano and her father’s old boy scout bugle at their home in Pennsylvania. At age nine she started playing the French horn, partly because her mother thought it sounded pretty, partly because that’s what was available at the local school, but mostly because of Carolyn had a strong desire to play something loud.

Congratulations to Carolyn Kunicki, Colorado Symphony Section Horn and recent honoree of the Colorado Symphony’s Women of Note.

It’s not easy for a small child to play the French horn. It requires stamina to hold the instrument during long practices as well as strong stomach muscles and powerful breath to make the instrument sound right. This wasn’t much of an issue for Carolyn who came from an athletic family and remains very athletic to this day.

Carolyn was homeschooled starting at age nine, which gave her ample time to play her horn.

She excelled both musically and academically, enough so to graduate early from high school.

Even more impressive is that by age 16, Carolyn was already accepted to The Juilliard School..

She always knew she wanted to go to New York City, spending childhood nights watching David Letterman and dreaming of making it to the Big Apple. Going to The Juilliard School was a dream come true and it turned out to be everything she hoped it would be. She spent many nights at the Metropolitan Opera thanks to tickets given to her by her professor, even if they were standing tickets for a three hour long opera. She continued to excel in the French Horn performance and went on to win the The Juilliard School Strauss Horn Concerto competition her senior year.

Carolyn won the position of Assistant Horn during that audition back in 2001 and has been playing in the Colorado Symphony ever since. Carolyn has become not only an amazing member of the orchestra’s overall talent, but also a community leader in Colorado. Carolyn has a passion for educational outreach, and she is very involved in the Colorado Symphony’s education program, musicurious. One of her favorite programs is the Once Upon a Time

After graduating, she auditioned and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Music Festival Fellowship, a three year program where fellows spend summers playing in Aspen. During her second summer she won the Aspen Wind Solo Competition. However, she would never make it to her third summer because during one summer in Aspen, she ended up driving to Denver to take an audition with the Colorado Symphony.

Carolyn couldn’t be more honored to be the recipient of the Women of Note accolade, saying “I grew up here. I was hired by the Colorado Symphony when I was just 21, I met my husband here, I had two children here - the Colorado Symphony is home to me, these people are my family. It’s so special to see this program, this group of women, making such an incredible impact in the arts community in Denver. The arts scene is growing in Denver and I think the next decade is going to be an amazing time for our city. Groups like Women of Note are helping our arts scene get to that next level and I’m honored to be a part of that.”

HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES ANDRES LOPERA, conductor Colombian Conductor Andres Lopera is one of the leading Latin-American artists in the United States with nearly a decade of engagements in both North and South America. A passionate conductor who believes in the transformational power of music, Lopera has directed the Oregon Symphony, Toledo Symphony, New World Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, and Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra just in the past three seasons. He has also appeared with professional and youth orchestras throughout Central and South America, including Honduras, where he led the Youth Orchestra of the Americas in a musical camp for both young and professional musicians. In 2012, Lopera was appointed as Music Director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, for which he oversaw 12 different orchestral ensembles with more than 450 students. Also an accomplished trombonist, Lopera’s musical development started with the Red de Bandas de Antioquia and Red de Escuelas de Musica de Medellin, both El Sistema like programs developed in Colombia. Lopera earned a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from New England Conservatory of Music and in Trombone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to these programs, he was awarded a double degree in Conducting and Trombone from the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia. His principal teachers are Hugh Wolff and David Loebel, with additional studies with Ludovic Morlot, Michael Tilson Thomas and Marin Alsop.

DUAIN WOLFE, director, Colorado Symphony Chorus Recently awarded two Grammys® for Best Choral Performance and Best Classical Recording, Duain Wolfe is founder and Director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus and Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus.

This year marks Wolfe’s 31st season with the Colorado Symphony Chorus.

The Chorus has been featured at the Aspen Music Festival for over two decades. Wolfe, who is in his 21st season with the Chicago Symphony Chorus has collaborated with Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti, and the late Sir George Solti on numerous recordings including Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, which won the 1998 Grammy® for Best Opera Recording.

Wolfe’s extensive musical accomplishments have resulted in numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Denver, the Bonfils Stanton Award in the Arts and Humanities, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in an Artistic Discipline and the Michael Korn Award for the Development of the Professional Choral Art. Wolfe is also founder of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, from which he retired in 1999 after 25 years; the Chorale celebrated its 40th anniversary last season. For 20 years, Wolfe also worked with the Central City Opera Festival as chorus director and conductor, founding and directing the company’s young artist residence program, as well as its education and outreach programs. Wolfe’s additional accomplishments include directing and preparing choruses for Chicago’s Ravinia Festival, the Bravo!Vail Festival, the Berkshire Choral Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. He has worked with Pinchas Zuckerman as Chorus Director for the Canadian National Arts Centre Orchestra for the past 13 years.

HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES MARY LOUISE BURKE, associate director, Colorado Symphony Chorus Mary Louise Burke is in her 22nd season as Associate Chorus Director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. In addition to assisting Chorus Director Duain Wolfe, she also prepares the chorus for various Colorado Symphony pops concerts and special chorus projects. She is also Associate Director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, conducting the Concert Choir and acting as vocal coach for the Chorale. With an expertise in vocal technique, Burke frequently does seminars in vocal and choral techniques for area church and community choirs. She is the Assistant Music Minister at Montview Presbyterian Church and has taught classes in “Find Your Authentic Voice” at the University of Denver. She has a Doctorate in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado.

DEBORAH DESANTIS, artistic director, Colorado Children’s Chorale Deborah DeSantis has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Colorado Children’s Chorale since 1983. She regularly conducts performances throughout metropolitan Denver and has led numerous tours, nationally and internationally. Her passion for artistic excellence and music education has been a driving force in the development of the Chorale’s School Partnership program, which she established in 1994. In addition to designing and directing community performance residencies for the Chorale, she frequently serves as guest clinician and conductor for school and community children’s choral programs throughout the nation. Debbie has conducted seminars and workshops for Chorus America, the American Choral Director’s Association, Colorado Music Educators Association, the Choristers’ Guild and the Suzuki Institute. She has served as co-chair of Chorus America’s Children/Youth Choir Constituency.

HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES AMANDA RADDATZ, soprano Amanda Raddatz has garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike in concert, oratorio, and opera performances. Ms. Raddatz has sung performances with Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Boulder Philharmonic, Black Hills Symphony, Boulder Symphony, and Jefferson Symphony. She has been the featured soprano in the Messiah, Carmina Burana, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Mahler’s 4th Symphony, Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne, and Bach’s Magnificat.

Ms. Raddatz began her professional opera career as an apprentice with Utah Opera, Nashville Opera, and Cincinnati Opera. Since that time, she has added many performances to her growing list of credits. These include Musetta in La Boheme, Violetta in La Traviata, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutti, the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, Pamina and First Lady in Die Zauberflӧte, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Abigail Williams in the Crucible, Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Clorinda in La Cenerentola, and Rose in Street Scene. A first place winner in the Birmingham Opera competition and High Plains Opera Singing Competition, she was also a finalist in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild competition and a three-time Regional finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS 2015/16 Colorado Symphony season marks the 32nd year of the Colorado Symphony Chorus.

Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Colorado Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of 180 volunteers joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts.

The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, where it has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the worldrenowned Aspen Music Festival, performing many great masterworks under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman.

The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent Hyperion release of the Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem and Hough’s Missa Mirabilis. In 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the chorus, Duain Wolfe conducted the chorus on a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague. The Chorus will return to Europe in 2016 for concerts in Paris, Strasbourg and Munich.

COLORADO CHILDREN’S CHORALE For more than forty years the Colorado Children’s Chorale has brought its artistry and charm to audiences throughout the world. With a diverse repertoire ranging from fully staged opera and musical theater to standard choral compositions in classical, folk and popular traditions, the Chorale performs with an innovative stage presentation and a unique theatrical spirit.

In recognition of its artistic excellence, the Chorale was awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the prestigious El Pomar Award for Excellence in Arts and Humanities.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Deborah DeSantis and Executive Director Meg Steitz, the Colorado Children’s Chorale annually trains 500 members between the ages of 7 and 14 from all ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds representing more than 180 schools in the Denver metro area and beyond. Since its founding in 1974, the Chorale has sung countless performances with some of the world’s finest performing arts organizations, appeared with world-renowned artists, performed for numerous dignitaries, and appeared in television and radio broadcasts.

The Performance Program includes a series of self-produced concerts, numerous performances with other Colorado arts organizations, and touring around the world. The Chorale presents annual performances of Christmas with the Children’s Chorale and Spring with the Children’s Chorale at Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, A Classical Afternoon at Montview Presbyterian Church and Performing Small Miracles at Colorado Heights Theater.

Spring Fling Sing! is presented in venues across the metro area. This season also includes The Music Man in Concert, A Colorado Christmas, Sierra Boggess in Concert and Carmina Burana with the Colorado Symphony, Carmina Burana with Bravo! Vail, and Ballad of Baby Doe and Tosca with Central City Opera. Tour Choir will present a series of concerts across Kansas and Colorado this spring and, in July, Festival Singers will travel alongside the Colorado Symphony Chorus where they will be joined by local orchestras in extraordinary and historic concert venues in Paris, Strasbourg and Munich.

In addition to the Performance Program, the Chorale offers an extensive mission-supporting Education Program. School Partnerships provide weekly choral music and performance training in targeted schools, offering instruction to students and support for teachers with professional conductors, accompanists, choreographers and other resources as needed. School concerts and workshops serve elementary and middle school students, giving school children the opportunity to experience a professional concert by their peers. Community Choirs, including the dual-language Aplausos de Colorado Children’s Chorale, 303 Choir, NE Denver JAMS, Northside Music Project and El Sistema Colorado, provide children the opportunity to rehearse and perform in their own community with no audition necessary. The Chorale Education Program was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant and received an Education Outreach Award from Chorus America.

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN Frosty the Snowman was a jolly, happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose, and two eyes made out of coal.

Frosty the Snowman is a fairytale, they say; He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day.

There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found, For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around!

HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES CHRISTOPHER DRAGON, conductor Australian conductor Christopher Dragon begins his appointment as Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony in the 2015/16 season.

In 2013 he was appointed the inaugural Assistant Conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, a title he holds until the end of 2015.

This role provided him with the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch in addition to numerous other engagements. In April of 2015 Christopher made his debut at the Sydney Opera House conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with Australian singer/ songwriter Josh Pyke. In 2016 he will be making his debut with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Christopher is a member of the prestigious Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program through which he has worked with orchestras in Australia and New Zealand under the guidance of Christopher Seaman and the orchestras’ Principal Conductors. In 2014 Christopher was invited to conduct the Princess Galyani Vadhana Youth Orchestra in Thailand and earlier that year participated in the Jarvi Winter Academy in Estonia where he was awarded the Orchestra’s Favourite Conductor Prize. Christopher has also studied with numerous distinguished conductors including Paavo and Neeme Jarvi at the Jarvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, and conducting pedagogue Jorma Panula.

JACKIE EVANCHO, vocalist It was Jackie Evancho’s love of the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Phantom of the Opera that stirred the passion within her to begin singing and posting videos to YouTube. Not long after gaining a degree of notoriety for those videos Jackie decided to submit her rendition of “Panis Angelicus” to a special YouTube episode during the 5th season of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” variety show. The response was overwhelming and earned her the opportunity to perform in front of the judges on live television. Jackie’s first performance on “America’s Got Talent” left audiences and judges astonished that such a perfect, beautiful, soprano voice could come from a 10 year-old girl. During her next appearance in the competition, judges asked Jackie to improvise a tune which she performed flawlessly. It wasn’t just her musical gift and her age that floored the “America’s Got Talent” audience, but Jackie’s presence, poise and charm that truly made them take notice. One of the show’s judges, Piers Morgan, explained, “You’ve got the whole package.” Jackie’s debut EP, O Holy Night, was released in November 2010 and became the year’s #1 best-selling debut recording with sales exceeding 1 million copies and earned her a platinum certification. In June 2011, Jackie released her first studio album, Dream With Me. After parting ways with Columbia Records Jackie found a home with Sony Masterworks and released her third studio album in July of 2014 and like her other albums before, Awakening too debuted at #1 on Billboard’s classical charts. And the journey continues……
