Experience the Symphony’s musicians, guest conductors, and soloists as they rehearse and prepare some of the season’s most innovative concerts from the Masterworks and Inside the Score series. Learn what it takes to work for the CSO. This program will especially engage band and orchestra students.

Mozart Performed by Michael Thornton

Colorado Symphony Principal French Horn Michael Thornton performs works by two Mozarts: Wolfgang’s Horn Concerto No. 3, then Sinfonia pastorella for an 8 foot alphorn by Leopold, Wolfgang’s father. James Feddeck conducts Dvorák’s Carnival Overture and Brahms’ lush Symphony No. 4.

Elgar “Enigma Variations

10 am-12:30 pm

Colorado Symphony Principal Harp Courtney Hershey Bress performs masterpieces

by Debussy and Ravel. Courtney Lewis leads this program culminating in Sir Edward Elgar’s popular “Enigma Variations,” that depicts Elgar’s family members and friends in a musical cryptogram.

Berlioz “Symphonie Fantastique”

Internationally acclaimed violinist Philippe Quint performs Stravinsky’s Concerto in D major on a 1708 Stradivarius, and the orchestra rehearses Berlioz’s colorful and exciting Symphonie fantastique.

Jan 27 Mussorgsky “Pictures at an Exhibition”

9:30 am-12 pm

Jayce Ogren conducts a rehearsal of Mussorgsky’s rich intense masterpiece, and Colorado Symphony Associate Concertmaster Claude Sim performs Aram Khachaturian’s energetic Violin Concerto.

Shakespeare Festival “Romeo & Juliet”

10 am-12 pm

The definitive ode to star-crossed lovers caps the Colorado Symphony’s Shakespeare Festival. The symphony rehearses musical interpretations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Students will be able to compare the work of masters like Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, and Leonard Bernstein.

May 13 Dvořak “From the New World”

10 am-12:30 pm

Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams performs Béla Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Andre de Ridder conducts Dvořák’s popular “New World Symphony,” a work influenced by the rhythms of Native American music, African-American spirituals, and the wide-open spaces of the 1890s American plains.

Strasburg High School Student

Grades 3-8

The instruments of the symphony orchestra can combine in ways that ignite the imagination, support a story, convey thoughts and feelings, and bring a character to life. Explore how composers make use of the 4 families of instruments to create tonal color palettes specific to their inspiration. Students will hear and compare music for ballet, film, and concert stage on this journey with the Colorful Colorado Symphony. Teachers receive Colorado State Music Standards and Common Core aligned materials featuring the program’s repertoire, enabling classroom study in advance of the field trip. Make your reservations early!

Grades 3-5

An imaginative, integrated arts program highlighting the relationships between music and life sciences, and how each can help explain the other. Eco-systems and the life cycle of the butterfly are combined with music concepts like theme and variations, and melodic development. Teachers receive preparation materials prior to the performance. This program can be paired with Once Upon A Time for schools that also want a program for lower elementary grade students. Recommended: Aesop Times Two, or Tunji and the Giant.

A Colorado Symphony small ensemble will visit your school to present a program of music and storytelling which supports language arts instruction, and introduces students to orchestral instruments and classical music. Programs listed below can be combined to reach all ages. These programs can also be combined with our integrated math and science programs, MathNotes and Music of Life, designed for 3rd-5th grades.

This specially designed program introduces the instruments of the orchestra to very young children in venues throughout the metro area. Our 16 piece orchestra and narrator perform an interactive program which incorporates story-telling, and singing and movement with music. This year’s program, Peter Rabbit, will delight young children, teachers, and parents.

Master Mentors - Work With Symphony Teaching Artists

Grades K-12

This highly flexible program provides support for music students of any grade. At the request of the teacher Colorado Symphony musician Teaching Artists can lead: instrument demonstrations, listening/singing/movement workshops, coaching for band/orchestra students, advice for students interested in pursuing a career in the musical performing arts, workshops for general music students that support specific units of study such as music of the Renaissance, composition/improvisation, or another specific request that a music teacher may have.
