VERY YOUNG COMPOSERS MUSIC CREATION RESIDENCY PROGRAM • AGES 8-10
Very Young Composers (VYC) allows 3rd-5th grade students the opportunity to work with Colorado Symphony Teaching Artists to create original music compositions which will be performed at their school and at Boettcher Concert Hall. Students write a story, segment it into events, and compose music to express the events, setting, and characters. Teaching Artists act only as scribes, faithfully notating each of the students’ ideas.

hile young students are in the formative stages of their career interests, W measures of the long-term ramifications of the VYC program include students indicating increased interest in careers related to the liberal arts and strong gains in medical/health careers. A higher rate of VYC participants selected business and STEM (nonhealth) related careers. G iven the well-established short-term benefits of arts-based and music-based education, it is hardly surprising that long-term benefits tend to follow. T eachers believe the program has a favorable impact on their students, due to the high level of excitement in class, and the near-universal level of pride students take in their music. This is critical, as it affirms a strong culture within the school where teachers are aware of their students’ accomplishments and how music is frequently used in school.
