WELCOME Let me start off by expressing a huge heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Colorado and to all of the patrons of the Colorado Symphony for welcoming me to Denver – you all have made me truly feel at home here already.

BRANDON MARSHALL

In my short time as Associate Conductor since the start of the 2015/16 season, I’ve experienced such a wonderful and open community and a truly diverse and thriving arts scene. With this culture, surrounded by such beautiful scenery, I now fully understand why Colorado is one of the most special places in the world. I will say this – as an Australian I am still adjusting to the cold this winter but luckily it’s warm and cozy in Boettcher Concert Hall!

Christopher Dragon conducting “The Music Man in Concert” in September.

I’m thrilled to announce that I will have the pleasure of conducting my Masterworks performance debut with the Colorado Symphony during the final weekend of Shakespeare Festival: Romeo and Juliet on March 18 – 20.

This is especially exciting as 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. To celebrate the life and work of Shakespeare, the Colorado Symphony has programmed Shakespeare-related repertoire for three weekends in March including A Midsummer Night’s Dream on March 4-5 and a special Inside the Score concert on March 11 featuring Duain Wolfe and the Colorado Symphony Chorus. The Shakespeare Festival ends with Romeo and Juliet in which I’ve worked with the rest of our artistic team to build an exciting program combining the words of Shakespeare with the compositions of Tchaikovsky, Rota, and Prokofiev to create a unique and dramatic Shakespeare performance which features four local actors. It will also feature Bernstein’s American adaptation in West Side Story, one of my favorite pieces, and one that I’ve always wanted to conduct. It has been an absolute pleasure working with the Colorado Symphony this season and I’m confident it will only get better from here. Thank you again to everyone for welcoming me to your beautiful home. I hope you’ll join me here in the hall again soon. As we say in Australia to wish someone good luck before a performance – Chookas! Christopher Dragon, Associate Conductor

Here will we sit and let the sounds of music creep in our ears William Shakespeare, the incomparable musician-of-words, waxed eloquently – and even prophetically – about music and its power to move our souls. For when we sit here in Boettcher Concert Hall, we do indeed let the sounds of music wash over us and warm us with its compelling charms.

And then the…

… soft stillness and the night become the touches of sweet harmony. Those sweetest of harmonies that emanate from this rounded stage…

…sounds and sweet airs that give delight. Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments will hum about our ears, and sometimes voices… Voices that chorus the great words and music of the spheres, joining with the magical musicians of this mighty orchestra.

Such harmony is in immortal souls. Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon, will receive his due applause in his 400th anniversary year with music of the masters, inspired by his own prodigious pen.

Music! Hark!

It is YOUR music of THIS house. Duain Wolfe, Chorus Director and Conductor, with a respectful nod to William Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest

This is a special year for theater goers and artists of every genre, as 2016 is the 400th anniversary of the passing of one of the most iconic and influential artists to ever live — William Shakespeare. The English born playwright would give us 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and more during his lifetime, and has inspired hundreds of years of art since — not only through poetry and plays, but in painting, music, and so much more. His work has also been the subject of many classical music composers who used his beautiful prose and stories as the foundation of their pieces such as by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, and in more modern compositions as with Bernstein in West Side Story.

The Colorado Symphony’s Shakespeare Festival

The Colorado Symphony has devoted three programs in March to Shakespeare and his work, starting with A Midsummer’s Night Dream on March 4-5. In this sweeping program, guest conductor Hans Graf will lead guest actor Maureen Thomas and the Colorado Children’s Chorale, together with the Colorado Symphony, through Felix Mendelssohn’s charming and delightful A Midsummer Night’s Dream, including the unmistakable Wedding March. On March 11, Inside the Score features Colorado Symphony Chorus director Duain Wolfe leading the orchestra and chorus in a musical exploration of Shakespeare’s most captivating lines and characters. Finally, new Associate Conductor Christopher Dragon will make his Masterworks debut on March 18-20 conducting Romeo and Juliet, the definitive ode to star-crossed lovers. This program, also including the Colorado Symphony Chorus, caps the Colorado Symphony’s Shakespeare Festival with a wide-ranging expedition into the music inspired by the timeless drama including a quartet of actors. It’s no wonder that Christopher Dragon said in his welcome letter how excited he is to conduct this as his Masterworks debut – it promises to be a magical concert experience. — Seth McNew

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Meet Associate Concertmaster Claude Sim Claude Sim has been with the Colorado Symphony for more than 16 years and holds the title of Associate Concertmaster. Claude is also a successful chamber musician and has been featured with the critically acclaimed Miró String Quartet, and as violist with the Grammy® Award-winning Pacifica Quartet.

Claude performs Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto During his hundreds of performances with the Colorado Symphony since 1999, Claude has performed as soloist with the orchestra on many occasions. The Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition concerts on January 29 and 30 featuring Claude as a soloist performing Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto might be the most exciting for him. “In all of my time here, I don’t think it’s ever been done,” says Claude. “It’s such a rarely done piece and a great opportunity for a fresh take. The piece is really special. The cinematic quality and sound reflect Khachaturian’s background and his Armenian roots. It’s a very accessible piece, the sweeping melodies are memorable and the infectious rhythms are inspired by folk dance.”

Finding new musical perspectives Claude is passionate about letting his mastery of classical violin translate into many different kinds of music from chamber music, to bluegrass, jazz, and Latin music. Claude even experiments with performing on different instruments and in fact, his guest appearance with the Pacifica Quartet was as violist instead of violinist. Claude is now in an ensemble formed with two local musicians, and their trio has played for events for the Colorado Symphony, such as Beethoven and Brews, and other events such as jam sessions and jazz events. “I try to play with as many varied types of musicians as possible” he says, “to get a different perspective.” He is currently writing original music for his ensemble to explore. Much of the material is rooted in the American jazz tradition, where he writes the main structure for the tunes but keeps space open for improvising. “It’s been a great challenge and joy working with my band to explore all the collective music influences we have. The endless learning process from working with world-class musicians like the other two in this trio and with the entire Colorado Symphony is what continues to inspire me.” SOUNDINGS 2015-2016 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG 17

COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS 2015/16 Colorado Symphony season marks the 32nd year of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Colorado Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of 160 volunteers joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts. The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, where it has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the worldrenowned Aspen Music Festival, performing many great masterworks under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman. The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent Hyperion release of the Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem and Hough’s Missa Mirabilis. In 2009, Duain Wolfe conducted the chorus on a concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl, and Prague. The Chorus will return to Europe in 2016 for concerts in Paris, Strasbourg and Munich. For an audition appointment, call 303.308.2483.
