MOVIES AT THE SYMPHONY BIOGRAPHIES CHRISTOPHER DRAGON, conductor Australian conductor Christopher Dragon is the Music Director of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Colorado Symphony. He joined the Colorado Symphony in the 2015/2016 Season as Associate Conductor – a position he held for four years. For three years prior, Dragon held the position of Assistant Conductor with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch. Dragon works regularly in Australia and has guest conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. His 2015/16 debut performance at the Sydney Opera House with John Pyke and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was released on album by ABC Music and won an ARIA the following year. Dragon’s international guest conducting includes Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, Omaha Symphony, San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted at numerous festivals including the Breckenridge and Bangalow Music Festivals, with both resulting in immediate re-invitations. At the beginning of 2016, Dragon conducted Wynton Marsalis’ Swing Symphony as part of the Perth International Art Festival alongside Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Dragon began his conducting studies in 2011 and was a member of the prestigious Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program in Australia under the guidance of course director Christopher Seaman. He has also studied with numerous distinguished conductors including Leonid Grin, Paavo and Neeme Jarvi at the Jarvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival and conducting pedagogue Jorma Panula.

He has collaborated with directors such as Tim Burton, Gus Van Sant, Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, Ang Lee, Rob Minkoff, Guillermo del Toro, Brian De Palma, James Ponsoldt and David O' Russell. Most recently for Elfman is the Universal Pictures’ family comedy The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle starring Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland. A native of Los Angeles, Elfman grew up loving film music. He travelled the world as a young man, absorbing its musical diversity. He helped found the band Oingo Boingo, and came to the attention of a young Tim Burton, who asked him to write the score for Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. 34 years later, the two have forged one of the most fruitful composer-director collaborations in film history. In addition to his film work, Elfman wrote the iconic theme music for the television series The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives. Elfman has expanded his writing to composing orchestral concert works which include: Serenada Schizophrana, a symphony commissioned by the American Composer’s Orchestra, which premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2005, Rabbit and Rogue, for the American Ballet Theater choreographed by Twyla Tharp, performed at The Metropolitan Opera house in 2008, and IRIS for Cirque du Soleil directed by French choreographer Philippe Decouflé. In 2011, Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton live orchestral concert, premiered at Royal Albert Hall, and has since toured around the world and won two Emmys®. In 2017 Elfman premiered his first violin concerto in Prague, which was performed by the Czech National Orchestra. TIM BURTON, filmmaker Tim Burton, widely regarded as one of the cinema’s most imaginative filmmakers, has enjoyed great success in both the live-action and animation arenas. Most recently Burton directed Big Eyes and the critically acclaimed Frankenweenie which was a 2012 Academy Award® nominee for Best Animated Picture. Earlier in 2012 Burton directed Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Eva Green in the gothic thriller Dark Shadows, based on the cult favorite television show. He also produced the fantasy horror Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which was directed by Timur Behmambetov. In 2010, he directed Alice in Wonderland, an epic fantasy based on the classic story by Lewis Carroll, and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Mia Wasikowska in the title role. Alice in Wonderland also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, and won two Academy Awards®, for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. Burton was previously honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Animated Feature for the 2005 stop-motion film Corpse Bride, which he directed and produced. He earlier received BAFTA Award and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for Best Director for the acclaimed fantasy drama Big Fish. More recently, Burton won a National Board of Review Award and garnered Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for his directing work on Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which also won the Golden Globe for Best Film – Musical or Comedy. Depp earned an Oscar® nomination for his performance in the title role of Burton’s 2007 film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical thriller, also starring Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman. Burton began his film career in animation, and, in 1982, directed the stop-motion animated short Vincent, narrated by Vincent Price, which was an award winner on the film festival circuit. He made his feature film directorial debut in 1985 with the hit comedy Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. In 1988, Burton helmed the inventive comedy hit Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton as the title character. He then reteamed with Keaton on the action blockbusters Batman, which became the top-grossing film of 1989 and also starred Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and Batman Returns, also starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito. www.amp-worldwide.com

SANDY CAMERON, violin Declared “brilliant” by The Washington Post, violinist Sandy Cameron is one of the most strikingly unique artists of her generation. Since her debut at the age of 12 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Ms. Cameron has performed extensively as a soloist throughout the world. Here are some personal highlights of Sandy’s work: Places and Orchestras: Ms. Cameron has been recognized on stages worldwide and in a variety of settings. The White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Adelaide Festival of the Arts in Australia are among a number of unique performance experiences Ms. Cameron has had. She has appeared at venues such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany, and the Sydney Opera House. Ms. Cameron has collaborated with numerous orchestras, including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Kirov Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and Tokyo Philharmonic. On Stage: The most noteworthy, and a truly rewarding experience of Ms. Cameron’s career as a concert soloist is Danny Elfman’s Violin Concerto, “Eleven Eleven”. Mr. Elfman wrote this concerto for Ms. Cameron, and she had the great pleasure and honor of presenting the world premiere with conductor John Mauceri at the Prague Proms in June 2017. It was received with great success, and Ms. Cameron continues to enjoy performing the piece for audiences worldwide. Other special PROGRAM VI

Ms. Cameron is also featured in performances with renowned jazz trumpeter-composer Chris Botti, with whom she has toured globally. Additionally, Ms. Cameron has written and performed her own musical arrangements for a number of productions at the Hollywood Bowl, including Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Live in Concert, Disney’s The Little Mermaid Live in Concert,Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Live in Concert, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Live in Concert. In the Studio: Versatile in her abilities as an artist, Ms. Cameron also enjoys musical engagements off the stage. In 2018, she recorded the Elfman Violin Concerto with Maestro Mauceri and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, now available on Sony Classical. She is currently involved in an exciting new project with the illustrious composer, Marco Beltrami. Recently, she was featured as a soloist on John Powell’s score to The Call of the Wild and Bear McCreary’s score for The Professor and The Madman. Ms. Cameron can also be heard on soundtracks to Cirque Du Soleil’s IRIS, the video game Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, the History Channel’s Houdini, and more. The outstanding violin used by Ms. Cameron, crafted by Pietro Guarnerius of Venice, c. 1735, is on extended loan through the generous efforts of the Stradivari Society® of Chicago.

KASON NICHOLAS, soprano Kason Nicholas is a member of the Colorado Children’s Chorale National Tour Choir. He is a seventh grader at Dunston Middle School and has appeared with Chorale ensembles in Billy Budd with Central City Opera and Tosca with Opera Colorado. This past fall Kason was the featured boy soprano in Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living at Trinity United Methodist Church. He also enjoys playing piano, violin, and flag football.

TAYLOR MARTIN, chorus director Taylor Martin is an emerging conductor and sought-after educator in the greater Denver area who has served as Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Chorus since 2017. He made his Colorado Symphony debut conducting Handel’s Messiah in 2019 and in 2020 he conducted the Colorado Symphony’s Virtual Colorado Christmas. For the Colorado Symphony, Taylor has prepared the chorus for The Flaming Lips, Video Games Live, Zelda Symphony of the Goddess, and the Music of Danny Elfman. He also prepared and conducted the recent Red Rocks Amphitheater performance by Opiuo with ELUS Vocal Ensemble. Since 2016 Taylor has served as the Artistic Director of this innovative chamber choir. His passion for creative and thought-provoking programming has led the ensemble to considerable acclaim for their immersive presentations of repertoire ranging from great orchestral masterworks to new, imaginative works for unaccompanied choir. Taylor has worked with Duain Wolfe on major SOUNDINGS

COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS The 2021-2022 Colorado Symphony concert season marks the 38th season of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Symphony, the chorus has grown into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of volunteers joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances each year, to repeated critical acclaim. The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Bravo! Vail Music Festival, where it has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Dallas Symphony, under conductors Alan Gilbert, Hans Graf, Jaap van Zweden, and Yannick NézetSéguin. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing many great masterworks under the baton of conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman, and Robert Spano. Among the eight recordings the CSO Chorus has made is a NAXOS release of Roy Harris’s Symphony No. 4. The Chorus is also featured on a Hyperion release of the Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem and Stephen Hough’s Missa Mirabilis. Most recently, the Colorado Symphony and Chorus released a world-premiere recording of William Hill’s The Raven. In 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the chorus, Duain Wolfe conducted the chorus on a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague; and in 2016 the chorus returned to Europe for concerts in Paris, Strasbourg and Munich featuring the Fauré Requiem. The summer of 2022 will see the return of the Chorus to Europe to open the famed Salzburg Music Festival with Bruckner’s majestic Te Deum.
