BERTIE BAIGENT, assistant conductor Bertie Baigent is rapidly building an international reputation as an exciting and dynamic conductor-composer. He is Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Symphony, Music Director of Waterperry Opera Festival and Principal Guest Conductor of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra; other groups he has worked with include the Dallas Symphony, the WDR Sinfonieorchester, and the Gürzenich-Orchester. Bertie has assisted conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, and Jac van Steen, and has participated in masterclasses with Martyn Brabbins, Pierre-André Valade, and as part of the Dirigentenforum in Germany. Winner of the Royal Academy of Music’s Sir Henry Wood Scholarship and Ernest Read Prize in 2017, Bertie was the youngest semi-finalist in the London Symphony Orchestra Donatella Flick Conducting Competition 2018, and in 2017 participated in the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis. He is a Lies Askonas Fellow with Askonas Holt. Also at home in the world of opera, recent engagements have included The Magic Flute at Waterperry Opera Festival, Partenope for Hampstead Garden Opera, and work with Helios Opera and OperaUpClose. New music is particularly important to Bertie, with collaborations including those with the London Sinfonietta, the Phaedra Ensemble, the Royal Academy Contemporary Ensemble, and 4|12 Collective. Bertie’s compositions have been widely performed by artists such as the Aurora Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia, the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral, and the viol consort Fretwork, and have been heard in venues such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Royal Festival Hall. He has been awarded prizes and commissions by organizations including the Royal Philharmonic Society, the BBC, the National Centre for Early Music, and the Royal College of Organists. His works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and other European radio stations, and are published by Stainer & Bell. Bertie is a prize-winning Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, and trained as a cellist and pianist before focusing on conducting and composition. He read music at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a double first in 2016, and subsequently completed his master’s at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with distinction and DipRAM in 2018.

MOVIE AT THE SYMPHONY BIOGRAPHIES ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, composer OSCARTM-winning composer Alexandre Desplat is one of the most coveted film composers in the world today. Desplat is noted for his collaborations with some of the world’s top filmmakers: Wes Anderson, George Clooney, Stephen Daldry, David Fincher, Stephen Frears, Tom Hooper, Ang Lee, Terrence Malick, Roman Polanski and Angelina Jolie garnering eight Academy Award nominations. Desplat first captivated American ears with The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Birth. The Golden Globe and Oscar winner has since scored a range of incredible films, eight of which have been Oscar-nominated: The Queen, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The King’s Speech, Argo, Philomena, The Imitation Game, and The Grand Budapest Hotel which won the 2015 Oscar for Best Score. Desplat’s most recent work includes Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Suffragette directed by Sarah Gavron and starring Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep, and his second collaboration with Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne. Coming up next for Desplat is the period drama The Light Between Oceans directed by Derek Cianfrance starring Michael Fassbender, Florence Foster Jenkins starring Rebecca Ferguson and Meryl Streep, Illumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets starring Lake Bell and Kevin Hart, and Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story starring Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen. Born to a Greek mother and French father, Desplat grew up in France with a budding love for Hollywood film music, and broke into the French film industry in the 1980s. With a penchant for lyricism, elegant orchestrations, and precise dramatization, Desplat has quickly joined the pantheon of all-time greats. “I was in a car with a friend who had offered me a double vinyl of Star Wars,” Desplat remembers. “It might have been ’78. He gave me this record, and I remember having said to him, “Hmm. ‘Music composed and conducted by John Williams.’ That’s what I want to do.” And that’s what I’m doing.”

MOVIE AT THE SYMPHONY BIOGRAPHIES JUSTIN FREER, producer American composer/conductor Justin Freer was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. He has established himself as one of the West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and is a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, but quickly turned to piano and composition, composing his first work at eleven and giving his professional conducting debut at sixteen. Continually composing for various different mediums, he has written music for world-renowned trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Jens Lindemann and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music around the world. He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor Freer has appeared with some of the most well known orchestras in the world including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also one of the only conductors to have ever conducted in both the ancient Colosseum and Circus Maximus in Rome. Renowned wind conductor and Oxford Round Table Scholar Dr. Rikard Hansen has noted that, “In totality, Freer’s exploration in musical sound evoke moments of highly charged drama, alarming strife and serene reflection.” Freer has been recognized with numerous grants and awards from organizations including ASCAP, BMI, the Society of Composers and Lyricists and the Henry Mancini Estate. He is the Founder and President of CineConcerts, a company dedicated to the preservation and concert presentation of film, curating and conducting hundreds of full length music score performances live with film for such wide ranging titles as Rudy, Gladiator, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s A Wonderful Life, and the entire Harry Potter Film Franchise. Mr. Freer earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music Composition from UCLA, where his principal composition teachers included Paul Chihara and Ian Krouse. In addition, he was mentored by legendary composer/conductor Jerry Goldsmith.

MOVIE AT THE SYMPHONY BIOGRAPHIES BRADY BEAUBIEN, producer A Stanford graduate and All-American athlete, Brady Beaubien studied cognitive neuroscience before founding Interlace Media, an awardwinning motion graphics company. As a premiere CG animation studio and creative agency for feature films, Interlace has defined the global campaigns of over 100 major Hollywood movies, including the Avatar, X-Men, Rio, Ice Age, and Die Hard franchises. In 2013 Beaubien co-founded CineConcerts, a company dedicated to reinventing the experience of theatrical presentation and orchestral music. He currently produces CineConcerts’ titles full repertoire of film concert experiences, including Gladiator Live, The Godfather Live, DreamWorks Animation in Concert, It’s a Wonderful Life in Concert, Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, and the Harry Potter Film Concert Series. Beaubien has helped lead the company’s vision of new genres and its creative presentations of cherished film and television content, including writing Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, a live concert experience that celebrates 50 years of iconic material. Through creative strategy and collaboration, he works to ensure that CineConcerts inspires a return to communal entertainment and continues to offer modern audiences and the world’s youth a chance to reconnect with concert halls and local orchestras. Beaubien is also accomplished in the world of design, with his projects including Matsuhisa Paris at the Le Royal Monceau-Raffles and The Citrus on Hollywood’s Melrose Avenue, an architectural addition to the local cityscape that represents a commitment to the metropolitan and interconnected providence of Los Angeles. At The Citrus, advanced materials and technology merge with wood, concrete and glass in an organic and modernist design. Additionally, Beaubien partnered with award-winning sushi chef Nobu Matsuhisa to design his new restaurant concept – Umeda – and bring it to its current home in the picturesque building.
