British-born Bertie Baigent is rapidly building an international reputation as an exciting and dynamic conductor-composer. He is the musical director of the Waterperry Opera Festival, the London Young Sinfonia, and in various contexts has conducted the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the Gürzenich-Orchester, the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, the Britten Sinfonia, the London Sinfonietta, the Orchestre National de Lille, and the Orchestre de Picardie. Bertie has assisted conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, and Jac van Steen, and has participated in masterclasses with Martyn Brabbins, Pierre-André Valade, Harald Jers, and others. In 2017 he was awarded the Royal Academy of Music’s Sir Henry Wood Scholarship and Ernest Read Conducting Prize, and participated in the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis. Also at home in the world of opera, recent engagements have included Così fan tutte at the Bedford Park Festival and the world premiere of Nero Monologues for Opera in the City; Bertie has also worked with Shadwell Opera, Helios Opera, OperaUpClose, and will conduct at Hampstead Garden Opera and Waterperry Opera Festival in the 2018–19 season. New music is particularly important to Bertie, with past and forthcoming collaborations including those with the London Sinfonietta, the Phaedra Ensemble, and 4|12 Collective. Bertie’s compositions have been widely performed by artists such as the Aurora Orchestra, the Bath Philharmonia, the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral, and the viol consort Fretwork, and have been heard in venues such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Royal Festival Hall. He has been awarded prizes and commissions by organisations including the Royal Philharmonic Society, the BBC, and the National Centre for Early Music. His works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and other European radio stations, and are published by Stainer & Bell. Bertie is a prize-winning Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, and trained as a cellist and pianist before focusing on conducting and composition. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a double first in 2016, and completed an MA in conducting with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

MOVIE AT THE SYMPHONY BIOGRAPHIES NICHOLAS HOOPER, composer Nicholas Hooper is one of Europe’s leading composers, having written and produced music for over 250 films, dramas, and documentaries since 1990. He has developed a reputation for producing music that is original, inspiring, and always colourful. His scores have received several major accolades. In 2004 he won the BAFTA for Best Original Score for The Young Visiters as well as being nominated for State of Play in the same year. Nicholas was nominated for a 2006 BAFTA for his score to The Girl In The Café, and prior to this was BAFTA nominated for The Way We Live Now. In 1998 he won the coveted Golden Panda Award for Land of the Tiger, a major BBC documentary series on India. The following year he won again (having been nominated for three separate scores), making him the first composer to win the award consecutively. He has received many other accolades for his feature films including the period feature The Heart Of Me, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Williams, and The Tichbourne Claimant (a quote from Variety: “Nicholas Hooper’s alert symphonic score rates a major bow, adding shape and atmosphere to the labyrinthine tale”). Nicholas scored Philip Martin’s feature, Einstein and Eddington, starring David Tennant as Sir Arthur Eddington and Andy Serkis as Albert Einstein for Company Pictures/ HBO, and Belonging for BBC Wales Drama. He also scored Enid Blyton for Carnival/BBC, Mo Mowlam for C4, and Yes Virginia, a CBS animated film for Christmas 2009. Nicholas has received great critical acclaim for his stunning scores to both Harry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixTM for Warner Bros, (“Let there be no doubt – Hooper’s reputation is cemented with this work, and his career just shifted gears.” Daniel Champion, Music from the Movies, July 2007), and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince,TM nominated for a 2010 GRAMMY for Best Film Score. He most recently completed recording two wonderful scores to the Walt Disney Pictures feature releases, African Cats and Chimpanzee.
BRADY BEAUBIEN A Stanford graduate and All-American Athlete, Beaubien studied cognitive neuroscience before founding Interlace Media — an award winning motion graphics company. Interlace is a premiere CG animation and creative agency for feature films. They have defined the global campaigns of over 100 major Hollywood movies, including Avatar, X-Men, Rio, Ice Age, and Die Hard franchises. Beaubien co-founded CineConcerts, a company dedicating to reinventing the experience of theatrical presentation and orchestral music. He is currently producing Gladiator Live, The Godfather Live, DreamWorks Animation in Concert, It’s a Wonderful Life, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, and The Harry PotterTM Film Concert Series. He had spearheaded CineConcerts invention of new genres and its creative presentations of cherished film and television content, including writing Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, a project that celebrates 50 years of iconic material. He works to ensure CineConcerts inspires a return to communal entertainment and continues to offer modern audiences and the worlds youth a chance to reconnect with concert halls and local orchestras. As a designer, Beaubien co-designed Matsuhisa Paris at the Le Royal Monceau-Raffles and designed the Citrus building on Melrose Ave. This new architectural addition PROGRAM 4

At The Citrus, advanced materials and technology merge with wood, concrete, and glass in an organic and modernist design. Mr. Beaubien has partnered with award-winning sushi chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, to bring his new restaurant concept, Umeda, into the building. Mr. Beaubien also designed the restaurant.
JUSTIN FREER, producer American composer/conductor Justin Freer was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. He has established himself as one of the West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and has quickly become a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, but quickly turned to piano and composition, composing his first work at eleven and giving his professional conducting debut at sixteen. Continually composing for various different mediums, he has written music for world-renowned trumpeters Doc Severinson and Jens Lindemann and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music around the world. He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor, Freer has appeared with some of the most well known orchestras in the world including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony. In upcoming seasons he will guest conduct the Minnesota Orchestra as well as the orchestras of Dublin, Paris, Philadelphia, Sydney, Toronto, and others. Renowned wind conductor and Oxford Round Table Scholar Dr. Rikard Hansen has noted that, “In totality, Freer’s exploration in musical sound evoke moments of highly charged drama, alarming strife, and serene reflection.” Freer has been recognized with numerous grants and awards from organizations including ASCAP, BMI, the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and the Henry Mancini Estate. He is the Founder and President of CineConcerts, a company dedicated to the preservation and concert presentation of film, curating and conducting full length music score performances live with film for such wide ranging titles as Gladiator, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s A Wonderful Life and most recently Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.TM Mr. Freer earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music Composition from UCLA, where his principal composition teachers included Paul Chihara and Ian Krouse. In addition, he was mentored by legendary composer/conductor Jerry Goldsmith.
