WELCOME FROM THE COLORADO SYMPHONY BOARD CO-CHAIRS On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our own orchestra, welcome to The Colorado Symphony Ball 2014. Last year, the Colorado Symphony Ball set a new standard for special events and tonight we plan to take it to the next level. We are thrilled to have both The Moderators and The DaVita Blues All Stars joining your orchestra for a sensational performance this evening. The mission of the Colorado Symphony is to create extraordinary musical experiences that transport today’s listener, from the best of the past to the edge of the future and tonight is a testament to that vision. Tonight also is a special opportunity to honor Governor John Hickenlooper as the recipient of the prestigious 2014 Margaret Phipps Award. We are grateful for his leadership and contributions to the vitality of your Colorado Symphony and the region’s cultural community.
Furthermore, we must acknowledge the remarkable musicians of the Colorado Symphony and celebrate their significant contributions to the success of the 2013/14 season and seasons to come. Their artistry enriches the lives of countless Coloradans. From brilliant performances alongside musical luminaries such as Itzhak Perlman and Joshua Bell to busloads of excited schoolchildren eager to hear their very first concert, your musicians play a vital and integral role in our community. Your support remains essential to ensuring the Colorado Symphony’s continued work across the Front Range. Thank you for joining in tonight’s celebration and supporting this extraordinary orchestra. THE 2014 MARGARET PHIPPS AWARD PRESENTED TO
Gov. John Hickenlooper The Colorado Symphony established the Margaret Phipps award in 1993 to honor the philanthropic contributions and memory of Margaret Rodgers Phipps. A Denver native, Mrs. Phipps was celebrated throughout Colorado for her remarkable devotion to the arts community. She served two terms as president of the Denver Symphony Association and was a passionate advocate of music and the arts. This year it is with gratitude that the Colorado Symphony presents the 2014 Margaret Phipps Award to Governor John Hickenlooper. The Colorado Symphony’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to bestow this award on the Governor in acknowledgement of his generosity both to the Colorado Symphony and the cultural community of the State of Colorado. Even before he was elected Denver’s Mayor, John Hickenlooper understood the value that the arts contribute to economic development, workforce development, urban revitalization, and education. He hired the first art curator for a microbrewery and encouraged the growth of Denver’s Lower Downtown neighborhood
through the creation of art galleries, music venues and creative hubs. Since coming into office as Mayor of Denver and, now, Governor of Colorado, he has served as a stalwart advocate for the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), which distributes approximately $40 million annually to more than 300 cultural institutions in the greater metro Denver area. He has also served as the Board Chair of the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, promoting collaborative partnerships between arts and business and their impact on making Colorado a great place to live, work and play. The quality of Colorado’s arts and culture remain of the utmost importance to Governor John Hickenlooper. He is the first to recognize the cultural significance musicians play in the community and the value the Colorado Symphony’s music has on this state’s quality of life. The Colorado Symphony Board of Trustees is delighted to recognize the generosity of Governor John Hickenlooper and his unfailing support of the arts in Colorado.

In addition to a variety of guest conductor appearances throughout the U.S., O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances on each of the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday series. THE MODERATORS The Moderators, Denver’s premier rock-n-roll cover band, play more than just music - they play a vital role in the Denver philanthropic community. Comprised of CEOs from eight of Denver’s largest and smallest companies, The Moderators have been playing together for nearly seven years. They began as members in the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) who came together to make a cameo appearance at a YPO chapter event, and they’ve been playing together ever since. In that time, they have raised an excess of two million dollars for various charitable organizations in the Denver Metro Area. The Moderators’ passion is to play classic rock-n-roll for charities that are centered on important causes within the business com-
munity throughout Colorado. Whether the mission is to reduce student dropout rates within schools, put winter jackets on homeless children or support the Colorado Symphony, the band is helping local organizations raise funding to help children, as well as many other causes. Members: Mike Fries, Lead Vocals (President and CEO, Liberty Global); Ed Haselden, Guitar (CEO, Haselden Construction); Bryant Martin, Guitar (President, Bella Vita Costa Rica); Bob Deibel, Drums (President, OfficeScapes); Carl Fitch, Trumpet (CEO, Statera); Josh Skelton, Guitar (Founder, Red Turtle Music); Dick Capek, Keyboards (Medical Director, Cigna Health Care); Curtis Durham, Bass (Owner, Bath Nation); and Alan Mallery, Saxophone (QA Analyst, Oppenheimer Funds). THE DAVITA BLUES ALL STARS Born over a decade ago, the DaVita Blues All Stars have always been a band exclusively made up of teammates. Employed throughout the DaVita Village, the band comes from all departments and areas of the Village. The band members are from field operations to IT, and from So Cal to Nashville to the Bronx. The band’s purpose is to serve DaVita’s 51,000 teammates who serve the needs of 160,000 patients and advance the need to address Kidney Disease. Through raising funds from performances, CD and T-shirt sales, they support Kidney Disease Education, and the provision of Dialysis Services in emerging nations that cannot afford to provide this vital, life-saving service. In addition to supporting the community, The DaVita Blues All Stars have also participated in the Fortune Battle of the Bands competition, reaching the finals competition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH in 2006 and 2010. The band is happy to do their part through the universal language of music; equal parts of funk, country and Rock and Roll. Members: Shaun Collard, Lead Guitar and Vocals (Vice President, Clinical Operations); Terri Lowe, Vocals (Facility Administrator); Dan Rolls, Saxophone (Senior Programmer Analyst); Jon Amichetti, Bass and Vocals (Desktop Support Analyst); Shane Simon, Vocals (National Sr. Director, Home Hemodialysis); Nick Wood, Keyboards (IT Director); Steven J.
