the 2016 margaret phipps award presented to
mike & michelle Fries liberty global
The Colorado Symphony established the Margaret Phipps Award in 1993 to honor the philanthropic contributions and memory of Margaret Rodgers Phipps. A Denver native, Mrs. Phipps was celebrated throughout Colorado for her remarkable devotion to the arts community. She served two terms as the president of the Denver Symphony Association and was a passionate advocate of music and the arts. This year it is with gratitude that the Colorado Symphony presents the 2016 Margaret Phipps Award to Liberty Global and CEO Mike Fries and Michelle Fries. The Colorado Symphony’s Board of Trustees voted to bestow this award on Mike and Michelle Fries in acknowledgment of their generosity to the Colorado Symphony. Mike Fries is CEO of Liberty Global, the world’s largest cable television company headquartered here in Denver with operations in 14 counties and revenue of $18 billion. Mike helped found and build the company over the last 25 years and has
always been committed to culture and the arts in Colorado, among other causes. In addition to spearheading a long-term corporate partnership between the Symphony and Liberty Global, he has made significant personal contributions along the way, including as lead singer of the Moderators which has performed twice at this very gala (and never lost a battle!). Mike chairs or sits on the board of many charitable organizations in Denver including Museum of Contemporary Art, the Biennial of the Americas, Teach for America, Colorado Academy and ACE. Michelle Fries is a Florida native who spent a decade studying and working abroad before landing in New York as a senior executive for IMG, the global leader in sports, media and fashion. Still relatively new to Denver, she sits on the board of Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art and is passionate about addressing homelessness and supporting our veterans.

THE ENTERTAINMENT COLORADO SYMPHONY One of the leading orchestras in the United States, the Colorado Symphony performs more than 150 concerts annually at Boettcher Concert Hall in downtown Denver and across Colorado. Led by internationally renowned Music Director Andrew Litton, the Colorado Symphony is home to eighty full-time musicians, representing more than a dozen nations, and regularly welcomes the most celebrated artists from the world of symphonic music and beyond. Every season, the Colorado Symphony serves more than 250,000 people from all walks of life, performing a range of musical styles, from traditional to contemporary. Recognized as an incubator of innovation, creativity, and excellence, the Colorado Symphony continually expands its reach through education, outreach, and programming. The Colorado Symphony partners with the state’s leading musical artists, cultural organizations, corporations, foundations, sports teams, and individuals to expose diverse audiences to the transformative power of music.
THE DAVITA BLUES ALL STARS have always been a band exclusively made up of teammates, born over ten years ago. Employed throughout the DaVita Village, the band comes from all departments and areas of the Village, from field operations to IT, and from SoCal to Nashville to the Bronx. The band’s purpose is to serve DaVita’s 51,000 teammates who serve the needs of 160,000 patients and advance the need to address Kidney Disease. Through raising funds from performances, CD and T-shirt sales, they support Kidney Disease Education, and the provision of Dialysis Services in emerging nations that cannot afford to provide this vital, life-saving service. In addition to supporting the community, The DaVita Blues All Stars have also participated in the Fortune Battle of the Bands competition, reaching the finals at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH in 2006 and 2010. The band is happy to do their part through the universal language of music; equal parts of funk, country and Rock and Roll.
TRACKSUIT WEDDING Fun. Excitement. Pure Entertainment. These are the hallmarks of a Tracksuit Wedding concert experience. The brainchild of Libby Anschutz and Ali Pashel Frankfurt, this soulful band brings a unique mix of funk, rock, and blues to the stage. The group began writing original music in 2015 and was recently recognized by the Denver Post as a “Band on the Move.” The band members, who have played shows with everyone from Michael Franti to BB King, bring an incredible depth of talent and energy to every live show. An evening with Tracksuit is a unique experience in Colorado’s music scene. The band also played three major music festivals in 2015 and is looking forward to the release of their first original album in the spring of 2016.
