THE 2018 MARGARET PHIPPS AWARD PRESENTED TO
The Colorado Symphony established the Margaret Phipps Award in 1993 to honor the philanthropic contributions and memory of Margaret Rodgers Phipps. A Denver native, Mrs. Phipps was celebrated throughout Colorado for her remarkable devotion to the arts community. She served two terms as the president of the Denver Symphony Association and was a passionate advocate of music and the arts. This year, it is with gratitude that the Colorado Symphony is proud to present the 2018 Margaret Phipps Award to United Airlines. The Board of Trustees voted to bestow this award on United Airlines in acknowledgment for their longstanding generosity to the Colorado Symphony. United is connecting people and uniting the world. United Airlines is pleased to have been the official airline of the Colorado Symphony since 2011. They proudly bring the best of the world’s music to Denver through their partnership with the Colorado Symphony. United has the world’s most comprehensive global route network, serving 338 destinations worldwide in 49 countries and carrying 148 million passengers in 2017. From Denver International Airport, United operates 375 daily flights to 126 domestic and 12 international airports, including daily nonstop service to Tokyo, five destinations in Canada, and six in Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
But United does much more than connect passengers through safe and convenient global air travel; it forges strong relationships with the people and local communities it serves. United employees in Denver have donated thousands of hours of service to various local non-profit organizations and have tirelessly conducted school supply drives, food drives, hosted Aviation Days at Denver International Airport for future aviation professionals, and supported their co-workers who were affected by hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria last year, among other efforts. United’s Volunteer Impact Grants program offers employees the opportunity to apply for cash grants for area nonprofits where they volunteer frequently and has provided thousands of dollars to local organizations since the program began. United employees especially love bringing smiles to hundreds of local children facing medical and life challenges through the annual holiday “Fantasy Flights” trip to the North Pole and teddy bear deliveries to hospitalized children. Ben Flyin, the United Adventure Bear, brings his own passport full of travel fun and games to share with everyone he meets and United employees are happy to be his escorts on his travels. On behalf of their 88,000 employees worldwide including over 6,000 right here in Denver, United is honored to be the recipient of the 2018 Margaret Phipps Award.

“
Since moving to Denver last year and throughout my first season as music
director, I’ve been constantly inspired by the unbelievable support and passion of the Denver arts community. As you know, the Colorado Symphony is made up of worldclass musicians who create extraordinary musical experiences week in, week out. We are more grateful than ever for all of you who fill our concert hall with a shared love for the art form we treasure so dearly, and who sustain the music we make with your financial support. Thanks to your generosity, we now have a tremendous foundation in place, and our future has never been brighter.

Now as The Merger, they are joined by Lead guitarist Roger Lynch, another CEO who shares the band’s mission of playing the greatest rock, R&B and pop hits in support of Colorado’s most important charitable causes. Together, and as part of the Moderators, they have raised over $7 million for local organizations, The Merger including two prior appearances at the Symphony Ball. Rounding out the band are bass player Nick Golder, keyboardist Ryan Skiles and the dynamic duo of Emily Saunar and Raquelle Ahrens on back up vocals.
