WITH OUR DEEPEST THANKS TO THE MUSICIANS OF THE

Mary Rossick Kern & Jerome H. Kern

The 2019 Margaret Phipps Award presented to

DIANE S. HILL, Ph.D. The Colorado Symphony established the Margaret Phipps Award in 1993 to honor the philanthropic contributions and memory of Margaret Rodgers Phipps. A Denver native, Mrs. Phipps was celebrated throughout Colorado for her remarkable devotion to the arts community. She served two terms as the president of the Denver Symphony Association and was a passionate advocate of music and the arts. This year, it is with gratitude that the Colorado Symphony is proud to present the 2019 Margaret Phipps Award to Diane S. Hill, Ph.D. The Board of Trustees voted to bestow this award on Dr. Hill in acknowledgment for her longstanding service to the Colorado Symphony. Diane joined the Board of the Symphony in June of 2015. As an organizational psychologist she brought a variety of skills to the table. Helping the Symphony become a high performing organization was an early assignment. Time spent with musicians and staff only served to strengthen her passion for the CSA as well as her resolve to devote as much time as possible to this new assignment. She was recruited to chair one of our outreach and fundraising efforts dubbed Women of Note by its founders. After three years of hosting lunches, a wonderful assortment of gifted musicians, and a delightful group of women that grew beyond her home’s capacity, the organization remains strong and has moved to venues offered by corporate partners around the city. Diane also co-chairs the Advancement Committee of the Board. In this capacity she has assumed Board leadership for individual giving, partnering with Bill Myers who Chairs Corporate Advancement. Her love of the organization, energy and passion for music have propelled a variety of outreach initiatives that have helped grow the CSA audience, build a greater sense of community among our

donors, and expand community support for Colorado’s premiere performing arts organization. Diane has practiced psychology for 40 years as an educator, clinician, and organizational consultant based in Denver. Since 1989, she has been a partner with Somerville Partners--a professional firm dedicated to using psychology to help organizational leaders select, develop, and inspire those who work for them. They work with leaders in a wide variety of settings including, mining, manufacturing, energy, financial services, health and hospitals, education, and the arts. Diane is married to her business partner, Kevin Somerville. Together, they have three married children and six grandchildren. They live part time on a hay farm in Steamboat Springs, CO where Diane enjoys skiing, biking and hiking, horseback riding and entertaining. She and Kevin travel extensively for work and pleasure and have been recently involved in campaigns to support CU’s Anschutz Medical Campus, Mount Holyoke College, and the Colorado Symphony. Diane received her Bachelor’s Degree from Mount Holyoke College and her Master’s and PhD from the University of Minnesota. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and holds a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. Whether hosting a small chamber music event in her home or organizing a group of friends to have dinner and take in a concert, Diane is a tireless, articulate, and energetic advocate for the Symphony and the music it performs.
