CITY OVERVIEW Founded in 1652, Kingston is a city steeped in history. Kingston is actually the hybrid of two communities, the towns of Wiltwyck and Rondout, who later joined together under the banner of “Kingston.” In 1777, the colonists drafted what would be known as the New York State Constitution and established Kingston as the first state capital. All too swiftly, the British invaded and burned most of Kingston to the ground! Thankfully, some of the city’s beautiful stone structures and unique architecture remained standing, refusing to fall and lose their place in history. Inspired by these resilient buildings, many of the people of Kingston returned home and rebuilt their city.

By the 19th century, Kingston was a leader in the production of cement, bricks and bluestone, as well as a significant transportation hub, distributing essential supplies to the growing country by rail and canal. Now, well over 360 years later, Kingston is still producing speciality offerings unique to our area and sought after by national and international visitors and businesses.

In addition to its museums and walking tours, Kingston has embraced its historic roots by finding innovative uses for many of its large warehouses and former manufacturing facilities. Buildings which once housed the makings of the country’s most basic needs have been transformed into multi-use venues and unique live/work spaces for up and coming artists. The result of the influx of artists in Kingston has been the organic growth of a thriving and sustainable economy based on small businesses and the diverse backgrounds of all who call Kingston home.

“Uptown” – The Historic STOCKADE DISTRICT Kingston’s Uptown neighborhood is where visitors will find many fine examples of America’s early colonial history. The first permanent settlement was built in 1652. Governor Stuyvesant ordered the original stockade built in 1658 to protect the early settlers from local Indian attacks. Originally called Wiltwyck, Uptown Kingston is the largest remaining example of early Dutch settlement in New York State. In 1777, Uptown Kingston’s Senate House is where the first capital of New York was established, and visitors can explore many historic sites and museums that represent that era.

Uptown Kingston today is a thriving neighborhood with many shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, music venues, farmers’ markets, festivals and more. Though abundant public parking is available, the area is best enjoyed on foot. It boasts a highly diverse range of architectural details for visitors to explore, a chronology of American architecture that spans four centuries: from the early Dutch and English, to Federalist, Georgian, Greek Revival, Victorian, Romanesque, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Art Deco and Contemporary.

DISTRICT WALKING TOUR 2016 Tour dates: First Saturday of the Month, May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3, and October 1. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the largest intact early Dutch settlement in New York State and the neighborhood where New York State was born in 1777. View a treasury of centuries-old architecture as you walk the heart of the original village stockade of Kingston whose street plan was designed by Provincial-Governor Peter Stuyvesant in 1658. View a large cluster of native limestone houses built by descendants of the early settlers. Visit the courthouse site where the New York State Constitution was draft-

ed, and the gravesite of George Clinton, New York’s first elected governor, in the Old Dutch Church burying ground. The tour concludes with a visit to the interior of the circa 1812 Fred J. Johnston House. Fee: $10 adult; $5 child under 16. Free to Friends of Historic Kingston (FHK) members. The Forsyth Nature Center has dozens of animal exhibits, themed gardens, and green infrastructure displays. Visitors are encouraged to bring healthy snacks for the animals and a picnic lunch for themselves. The nature center is FREE and OPEN every day of the year. Often referred to as “The Cathedral of Kingston,” the Old Dutch Church, a National Historic Landmark, was a part of the Dutch Colonial Village of Wiltwyck; the original church structure was built on the present site in 1660. The present church structure is the third to be sited on the same plot of land. The church maintains a museum that houses many historical records and artifacts, including a letter from George Washington. The cemetery beside the church dates to 1600’s and has 77 Revolutionary War soldiers buried there including Vice President and NY Governor George Clinton. The Matthewis Persen House Museum and Cultural Heritage Center 74 JOHN STREET

The Persen House, named after its longest resident Matthewis Persen (1739-1819), was built in five phases from 1661 to 1922. The house has witnessed the entire history of Kingston and even pre-dates the formation of Ulster County. It was burned at least twice, saw wars and revolution and was home to doctors, tailors, grocers, druggists and innkeepers. As you walk through the Persen House you walk through time and history comes alive! A significant historical fact – the Matthewis Persen House is on the only street corner in the U.S. with a pre-Revolutionary building still located on each of the four corners. The house is open Tuesday through Friday 9am4:30pm and Saturdays 9am-3pm from May 28 through September 3, then Saturdays only from 10am-2pm from September 10 through November 19. Admission is free. The birthplace of New York State, the Ulster County Courthouse was the home to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1777. Written and adopted in the Courthouse on April 20, 1777, this Constitution became the model for our United States Constitution. It was here that our first freely elected Governor, George Clinton, took the oath of office, the first official act of New York State. The current Courthouse, built in 1818, sits on the same site as the original Courthouse erected in 1683 and is the oldest property in the United States to house a public building. Within its walls noted abolitionist Sojourner Truth won the freedom of her son, Peter, becoming the first African American woman to successfully challenge a white man in a United States court. In the fall of 1777 the elected representatives of rebellious New Yorkers convened in Kingston to form a new state government. New York’s first capital was born. The

session, New York’s first Senate, met in a simple stone house of a local merchant. Now part of a complex of five buildings, the Senate House tells the story of New York’s early government, and gives a taste of life in the Hudson Valley 200 years ago. Volunteer Firemen’s Hall & Museum 265 FAIR STREET

Housed in the 1857 Wiltwyck Fire Station, it is a wonderful example of the evolution of a firehouse from the operation of horse-drawn equipment to the operation of late 20th century fire equipment. The Kingston Fire Department can trace its origin back to 1754 when a fire engine was ordered from England. The Wiltwyck Fire House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This “Little Gem” of a Museum is “child friendly” and children will receive their own fire helmet. The Caboose Visitors Center WASHINGTON AVENUE

The red ‘Caboose’ is located on Washington Avenue near the NYS Thruway, and is open seven days a week, Memorial Day through the end of October, 9am-5pm. There is a kiosk with brief information for when the booth is closed. Inside the booth visitors will find material regarding the City of Kingston and all of Ulster County including travel guides, maps, brochures, and information on dining, lodging, museums, recreation and event calendars. PLACES TO VISIT MIDTOWN

MIDTOWN Midtown is often referred to as the “heart” of Kingston. In addition to being the central connection between the Uptown and Downtown business districts, Midtown is home to the city’s essential municipal, civic and educational facilities, including the historic City Hall, the regional hospitals, the Kingston Library, the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster, and Kingston High School, which just celebrated its centennial and launched its “Second Century Capital Plan.” The growing Midtown Arts District includes a wide array of galleries, music venues, tech hubs, and unique boutique manufacturing businesses. Midtown features a large concentration of retired factories and warehouses, which are now being transformed into unique live/work spaces for artists and other professionals. The recently completed Lace Mill housing complex is a prime example of an adaptive reuse project that features attractive and affordable rental spaces that fit perfectly in the burgeoning collaborative community that is the Midtown Arts District.

PLACES TO VISIT MIDTOWN City Hall

City Hall is a red brick building in a late Victorian architectural style dating to 1873. It sits on what had been the boundary between the villages of Wiltwyck and Rondout prior to their merger to form the City of Kingston. It was originally designed to closely resemble the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) 601 BROADWAY

UPAC is a Classical Revival theater built in 1927 as a combination vaudeville house/ movie palace. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places,

and is today a premier non-profit performing arts venue in the Hudson Valley. Owned and managed by the Bardavon, it regularly presents a diverse line-up of national and international headliners in music, dance, theater and more. “Downtown” – The Historic RONDOUT WATERFRONT DISTRICT Set with the Rondout Creek as its backdrop, this downtown neighborhood features some of the city’s most diverse and exciting events, concerts, and multicultural celebrations. Those visiting on a warm summer night will enjoy the light breeze near the water and the subtle buzz of a bustling nightlife. One can’t help but sway to the music while strolling down the promenade or enjoying a decadent dessert at one of Downtown’s fine eateries.

During the day, visitors wishing to view the Rondout Lighthouse or the beautiful Hudson River can book their rides at the Kingston Marina. The neighborhood features a wide variety of restaurants and charming antique shops, as well as a network of art galleries and museums. The Kingston Heritage Area Visitors Center can be found in the Rondout Waterfront District and provides an abundance of information on Kingston and Ulster County.

Last Saturday of the Month: May 28, June 25, July 30, August 27, September 24, and October 29 This tour traces the rapid transformation of Kingston’s waterfront area from farmland into a thriving maritime village and Hudson River port when it became the terminus of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1828. The tour describes the entrepreneurs and immigrants who shaped the new village and how its fate was tied to the canal, its fortunes rising, then sinking as railroads eclipsed canals in the late nineteenth century. The walk views the rich legacy

of commercial buildings, cast-iron storefronts, homes and churches built by the “melting pot” of nationalities that immigrated to Kingston’s waterfront area during the nineteenth century, and also discusses the area’s recent renaissance. Some uphill walking is involved. Fee: $10 adult; $5 child under 16. Free to Friends of Historic Kingston (FHK) members. Hudson River Maritime Museum 50 RONDOUT LANDING

The Hudson River Maritime Museum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the maritime history of the Hudson River, its tributaries, and related industries. Provides educational tours/programs, historical exhibits/collections, visiting heritage vessels, events/festivals, lectures/films, gift shop, docking, research/archival library. Museum campus includes the Kingston Home Port and Education Center serving as winter port for the Clearwater, and the newly opened Riverport Wooden Boat School. Home to Kingston High School Varsity Crew, Rondout Rowing Club, Kingston Sailing Club, Kingston office of Riverkeeper. 2016 exhibits focus on boat building, cement 16

The Trolley Museum of New York 89 EAST STRAND

The Trolley Museum offers weekend rides in their 1925 trolley car, from TR Gallo Park on the Historic Rondout Waterfront to Kingston Point by the beach and back. See exhibits and displays at their visitors center about trolleys and related history. The museum is open weekends and holidays from May 7th to Columbus Day, Noon to 5pm, and legal holidays including Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Columbus Day, plus special events.
