CITY OVERVIEW

Founded in 1652, Kingston is a city steeped in history. Kingston is actually a blend of two communities, the towns of Wiltwyck and Rondout, who later joined together under the banner of “Kingston.”

n 1777, the colonists drafted what would be known as the New York State Constitution and established Kingston as the first state capital. All too soon, the British invaded and burned most of Kingston to the ground! Despite this destruction, some of the city’s beautiful stone structures and unique architecture remained standing, refusing to fall and lose their place in history. Inspired by these resilient buildings, many of the people of Kingston returned home and rebuilt their city. By the 19th century, Kingston was a leader in the production of cement, bricks and bluestone, as well as a significant transportation hub, distributing essential supplies to the growing country by rail and canal. Centuries later, Kingston is still producing speciality offerings unique to our area and sought after by visitors and businesses from across the globe. Today, Kingston has transitioned from a traditional manufacturing city to a creative and vibrant community, growing in the areas of music, arts, film, technology, urban agriculture and boutique manufacturing.

More than just a producer of one distinct product, Kingston is now as rich in the diversity of its offerings as it is in its history. Visitors will enjoy the wide variety of galleries, music venues, public art exhibits and boutiques. In addition, the ever-growing Kingston Midtown Arts District, a coalition made up of artists, businesses, residents, organizations and more, includes hundreds of arts-based businesses and individual ventures to explore. Finally, Kingston is home to some of the greatest celebrations and festivals in the region, both on the Rondout Waterfront and in the Uptown Stockade District. In addition to its museums and walking tours, Kingston has embraced its historic roots by finding innovative uses for many of its large warehouses and former manufacturing facilities. “Uptown” – The Historic

ingston’s Uptown neighborhood is where visitors will find many fine examples of America’s early colonial history. With the first permanent settlement built in 1652, Uptown Kingston is the largest remaining example of early Dutch settlement in New York State. Uptown Kingston’s Senate House is where the first capital of New York was established in 1777. Visitors are encouraged to explore the many historic sites and museums that represent that era.

Uptown Kingston today is a thriving neighborhood with many shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, music venues, farmers’ markets, festivals and more. It boasts a highly diverse range of architectural details for visitors to explore, a chronology of American architecture that spans four centuries: from the early Dutch and English, to Federalist, Georgian, Greek Revival, Victorian, Romanesque, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Art Deco and Contemporary.

Enjoy a guided walking tour of the largest intact early Dutch settlement in New York State and the neighborhood where New York State was born in 1777. View a treasury of centuries-old architecture as you walk the heart of the original stockaded village of Kingston whose street plan was designed by Provincial-Governor Peter Stuyvesant in 1658. The Forsyth Nature Center has dozens of animal exhibits, themed gardens, and green infrastructure displays. Visitors are encouraged to bring healthy snacks for the animals and a picnic lunch for themselves. The nature center is FREE and OPEN every day of the year. Old Dutch Church 72 WALL STREET

Often referred to as “The Cathedral of Kingston,” the Old Dutch Church, a National Historic Landmark, was a part of the Dutch Colonial Village of Wiltwyck; the original church structure was built on the present

site in 1660. The present church structure is the third to be sited on the same plot of land. The church maintains a museum that houses many historical records and artifacts, including a letter from George Washington. The cemetery beside the church dates to 1600’s and has 77 Revolutionary War soldiers buried there including Vice President and NY Governor George Clinton. The Matthewis Persen House Museum and Cultural Heritage Center 74 JOHN STREET

The Persen House, named after its longest resident Matthewis Persen (1739-1819), and owned by Ulster County since 1914, has undergone extensive restoration since emergency repairs in 1999 revealed its historical significance. A Historic Structure Report discovered that it was built in five phases from 1661 to 1922. The house has witnessed the entire history of Kingston and even pre-dates the formation of Ulster County, so by touring the house, guests learn many important aspects of our local history! In 2016, County Clerk Nina Postupack announced the opening of a new and permanent exhibit at the Persen House. The focus of the exhibit is the 1665 Inventory of the first resident of the House, Gysbert Van Imbroch. Originally written in Dutch, this primary source document was translated to English in circa 1900 and lists all of the items found in the house at the time of Mr. Van Imbroch’s death in 1665. This document provides a wonderful window into Dutch colonial life in the 17th Century. Over 1,400 items are listed including books, medical equipment, household items, livestock, clothing and more. How many of these items are still used today? The answer might surprise you!

The Senate House State Historic Site 296 FAIR STREET

In the fall of 1777 the elected representatives of rebellious New Yorkers convened in Kingston to form a new state government. New York’s first capital was born. The session, New York’s first Senate, met in a simple stone house of a local merchant. Now part of a complex of five buildings, the Senate House tells the story of New York’s early government, and gives a taste of life in the Hudson Valley 200 years

Ulster County Courthouse 285 WALL STREET

The birthplace of New York State, the Ulster County Courthouse was the home to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1777. Written and adopted in the Courthouse on April 20, 1777, this Constitution became the model for our United States Constitution. It was here that our first freely elected Governor, George Clinton, took the oath of office, the first official act of New York State. The current Courthouse, built in 1818, sits on the same site as the original Courthouse erected in 1683 and is the oldest property in the United States to house a public building. Within its walls noted abolitionist Sojourner Truth won the freedom of her son, Peter, becoming the first African American woman to successfully challenge a white man in a United States court. ften referred to as the “heart” of Kingston, Midtown is home to the City’s essential municipal, civic, educational and recreational facilities, including the historic City Hall, the regional hospitals, the Kingston Library, the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster, the Kingston High School, the YMCA of Kingston, the Center for Creative Education, and the Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center.

The growing Midtown Arts District (www. madkingston.org) includes a wide array

of galleries, music venues, tech hubs, and unique boutique manufacturing businesses. Midtown features a large concentration of retired factories and warehouses, which are now being transformed into unique live/work spaces for artists and other professionals. Visitors are encouraged to take in a show at the renowned Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC), a 1,510-seat capacity theater on Broadway that recently underwent a $5.4 renovation.

City Hall is a red brick building in a late Victorian architectural style dating to 1873. It sits on what had been the boundary between the villages of Wiltwyck and Rondout prior to their merger to form the City of Kingston. It was originally designed to closely resemble the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. “Downtown” – The Historic

estled along the beautiful Rondout Creek, this downtown neighborhood features some of the city’s most diverse and exciting events, concerts, and multicultural celebrations. Those visiting on a warm summer night will enjoy the light breeze near the water and the subtle buzz of a bustling nightlife. One can’t help but sway to the music while strolling down the promenade or enjoying a decadent dessert at one of Downtown’s fine eateries.

During the day, visitors wishing to view the Rondout Lighthouse or the beautiful Hudson River can book their rides at the Kingston Marina. The neighborhood features a wide variety of restaurants and charming antique shops, as well as a network of art galleries and museums. The Kingston Heritage Area Visitors Center can be found in the Rondout Waterfront District and provides an abundance of information on Kingston and Ulster County.

immigration, community, work and bread. In spring and summer 2018, we will offer guided Hard Hat Tours of Reher’s Bakery, which is currently being restored and redeveloped. Join us to explore the retail bake shop where a quirky family of Jewish bakers served Kington’s diverse immigrant and workingclass Rondout neighborhood from 1907 until they closed in the 1980s. In the oven room, you’ll see the century-old commercial oven equipment and explore how two generations of the Reher family made their famous breads and rolls. The Reher Center also offers a series of public programs off-site to invite Hudson Valley residents and visitors to honor the struggles and contributions of our immigrant communities past and present. On June 3rd we’ll host our sixth annual Kingston Multicultural Festival in T.R Gallo Park, a family friendly event featuring food, music dance, games and crafts provided by local cultural organizations. Our 2018 Immigrant Gifts to America program will follow with an exhibit of photographs by recent immigrants highlighting their experiences adjusting to their new lives, along with two movies on immigrant themes. April 11 Hudson River Maritime Museum 7p.m. Lecture – “Hudson Valley 19th Century Industries” with Allynne Lange, Curator Emerita of the Hudson River Maritime Museum. The second half of the 19th century (1800s) was a time of great industrial growth and activity in the Hudson Valley. There was plenty of work for local people at that time, much of it involving hard physical labor. The industries included in this illustrated talk are brick-making, bluestone quarrying, natural cement, ice harvesting, boat building, shipping, pottery making, and clothing manufacturing. in a future volume of travels: 19th Century Glimpses of New York State’s Canals” with Paul Schneider. Now well launched into the multiyear bicentennial of the Erie and Champlain canals, our modern perceptions of these canals are naturally shaped by today’s barge canal system and its many uses, experiences and events in which we participate either on or along its prominent route bisecting the state. Certainly, the original builders of the canals would not recognize them today. This presentation will seek to catch glimpses of our grandfathers’ (and great, great, great grandfathers’) canal. June 6 Hudson River Maritime Museum Lecture – “Lighting the Lighthouse” with Frank Almquist. The history of lighthouses lighting will be discussed from the earliest “fire on a hill” to new LED light sources in a tower. The talk concentrates on the Fresnel lens, its developed in the 1850s, and its implementation around the globe as the primary lighthouse tool to project light beams across the water. Growth of electric lighting eliminated the flame based lamps using the Fresnel lens. August 11 Hudson River Maritime Museum Lecture – “Merriment and Mayhem on the Hudson: Excursion Steamboats in the Nineteenth Century” with Marika Plater. Steamboats decked out in banners, with music blasting and dancing people twirling on the decks, were a familiar sight on the Hudson by the late 1860s on sunny summer days. Aboard were working-class residents of New York City who had saved their pennies in order to—along with members of their churches, unions, sports clubs, and ethnic associations—rent boats and barges to carry them outside of the city during their rare days off. Called “excursions,” these trips exposed urbanites to sights and smells that were very different from the crowded neighborhoods where they lived and worked. After docking at riverside groves owned by entrepreneurs eager to profit from working-class hunger for pleasure outdoors, excursionists explored meadows and forests, went swimming, danced, played sports, chugged beer, feasted, and found temporary escape from their difficult daily lives. Yet excursion fun carried risks and conflicts, as steamboats and groves lacked safety features and wealthier

Cuomo announced the City of Kingston would receive $10 million in funding and investments in its Uptown Stockade Business District as the MidHudson Valley winner of the second round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. two years, the Stockade Business District will benefit from significant infrastructure upgrades, enhanced support for local business owners, and much more! PARKS & RECREATION

Kingston’s Parks and Recreation Department operates a network of 11 neighborhood parks, three community centers, a riverfront beach, a multi-use sports stadium, a community pool, and a nature center. The indoor and outdoor facilities provide the perfect foundation for active living, with many residents and visitors enjoying kayaking and sailing on the Hudson River, sports events at Dietz Stadium, and biking, hiking, birdwatching, and more at each of the City’s unique parks.

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS Forsyth Nature Center

The Mission of the Forsyth Nature Center is “To foster the exploration of the natural world in and around our community through educational programming and contact with flora and fauna at an interpretive facility.” The Forsyth Nature Center has 24 animal exhibits and a dozen gardens that contain a variety of native flora found right here in the Hudson Valley. The Nature Center has been a fixture in the Kingston Community since 1936 and continues to grow and expand with the help of the community through its Friends of Forsyth Nature Center, a not for profit group and with the support of the City of Kingston Parks and Recreation Department. The Forsyth Nature Center has a variety of Native, Exotic and Domestic animal exhibits, all designed for hands on exploration for both children and adults. These include our new turtle house, birds of prey exhibits, domestic and wild birds, small and large mammal exhibits and tropical amphibian and reptile greenhouses.

Dietz Stadium

The stadium is the home field of the Kingston High School Tigers football team, as well as the district’s field hockey, track and lacrosse teams. It often hosts regional and state football playoffs. The stadium is also home to the Stockade FC, a new men’s semi-professional soccer club. Facility includes a 400 meter track and a regulationsized football field turf. Available for public use when special events are not in session.

Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship

The City of Kingston takes sustainability seriously. You will see new composting bathroom facilities at all of our larger park complexes, solar panels at the Forsyth Nature Center and an effort to make sure that the City of Kingston’s operations are as green as possible.

Kingston Point Park

The land of Kingston Point Park has a long and intriguing history, beginning in 1897, Kingston Point has been a “must see” for visitors for over 100 years, with its beautiful views of the Hudson River, Rhinecliff and the surrounding natural areas, Kingston Point Park is an oasis in our urban city. Kingston Point has over 87 acres of open space. At Kingston Point Beach, visitors will enjoy beach volleyball facilities, a playground, free kayak, car top and small motorized boat launch, birdwatching, and access to restroom facilities and a picnic pavilion. Rotary Park, a subsection of the greater Kingston Point Park complex, includes softball fields, a BMX track, nature trails, a trolley landing, and a new dog park. It’s also a great place to cast a line!

“Movies Under The Stars” – Starting in June, enjoy FREE movies in our city parks! Movies are shown in different city parks on Saturday nights. Schedule will be announced in late Spring 2018. Bring a blanket, snacks & the whole family, and enjoy “movie night” under the stars! Kingston Earth Fair And Expo – The 6th annual sustainability fair will be held April 21st from 10am-4pm at the Forsyth Nature Center. This event features a variety of sustainable “green” initiatives along with resources for the community. The event is free and will include food, live music, demonstrations, book readings, an exchange store, and more. Community Bike Ride – On May 19, grab your bikes and join us for this free event! We will enjoy the day cycling through our city parks! Rides for every skill level. 8:30 am 15-mile Ride through Kingston Parks 10:00 am Bike Rodeo 11:30 am 3-mile Bike Ride Along the Waterfront Kingston Kayak Festival – On June 9th, Kingston Point Beach will be hosting the Hudson River's largest Kayak Festival! Join Kenco Outfitters & the City of Kingston for this exciting event which is sure to prepare you for a summer full of kayaking. Come for a kayak instruction, nature tours and boat demos. Suggested $10 donation Children’s Day Parade – Kingston’s annual “Children’s Day Parade” is a great community event that celebrates the summer season! On Friday July 6th, hundreds of children from local youth organizations, schools & summer camp programs will create floats focusing on our “Golden Anniversary.” PARTICIPATION IS FREE! Fall Festival – On October 7th, the Friends of Forsyth Nature Center & the Kingston Parks & Recreation Department host an annual “Fall Festival” as Forsyth Park from 11am-4pm. The event features live entertainment, music, crafts, children's games, delicious foods, interactive Nature Center demonstrations and more! River Ramble – September 15th paddle along the Hudson River during one of the most spectacular times

of the year! Join outdoor enthusiasts throughout the Hudson Valley as they enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the fall foliage. BOO At The Zoo – Join the Friends of Forsyth Nature Center, Kingston Parks & Recreation and the Junior League of Kingston on October 26th from 5:30-7:30pm for a fun filled evening at the Forsyth Nature Center. “Boo at the Zoo” is a Halloween treat for children of all ages! Families are encouraged to come in costume & enjoy s’mores over a campfire, snacks & live entertainment.

Boxing Program – This boxing program focuses on teaching fundamental boxing skills, techniques and conditioning. Train under the direction of Coach Ellis Harris. Class includes cardio workout, shadow boxing, bag work, partner skills & core strengthening exercises. Join us at the Andy Murphy (Midtown) Neighborhood Center where local World Champion Boxer Billy Costello trained! Ages 14 & Up.The program is FREE & open to all! Mon., Tues. & Thur. 5:00-7:00 p.m.

“Replace The Parks” Program – The Andy Murphy Neighborhood Center at 467 Broadway becomes a free, indoor playground for kids in the winter! The center will be open from 9:00 am-2:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from November to March. A large selection of toys & games are available for kids to play with. All children must be accompanied by an adult. NOTE: If there is a school delay or cancellation due to inclement weather, this program will be cancelled. A Naturalist’s Passport – The Naturalist program offers hands-on, interactive nature programs designed for children of all ages! The program runs every Thursday from May 31st through August 30th from 3:30-4:30 pm and is FREE for all. Youth participants receive a participation gift & certificate upon completion of six programs. “Bookworms” Program – This wonderful, intergenerational program brings our seniors & children together for an hour of learning & fun! Seniors read nature-based stories to children at the John Burroughs Reading Nook at the Forsyth Nature Center. The program is every Tuesday at 11:00 am, beginning late June, and runs through early September. It is FREE and weather permitting!
