Kingston

CITY OVERVIEW Founded in 1652, Kingston is steeped in history. The State’s First Capital, once an epicenter for manufacturing, is now moving into the future as an innovation and creativity hub

I

n 1777, the colonists drafted what would be known as the New York State Constitution and established Kingston as the first state capital. All too soon, the British invaded and burned most of Kingston to the ground! Despite this destruction, some of the city’s beautiful stone structures and unique architecture remained standing, refusing to fall and lose their place in history. Inspired by these resilient buildings, many of the people of Kingston returned home and rebuilt their city. By the 19th century, Kingston was a leader in the production of cement, bricks and bluestone, as well as a significant transportation hub, distributing essential supplies to the growing country by rail and canal. Today, Kingston has transitioned from a traditional manufacturing city to a creative and vibrant community, growing in the areas of music, arts, film, technology, urban agriculture and boutique makers. Kingston is now as rich in the diversity of its offerings as it

is in history. Visitors will enjoy the wide variety of galleries, music venues, public art exhibits and boutiques. In addition, the ever-growing Kingston Midtown Arts District, a coalition made up of artists, businesses, residents, organizations and arts-based ventures has much to explore. Finally, Kingston is home to some of the best celebrations and festivals in the region, both on the Rondout Waterfront and in the Uptown Stockade District. In addition to museums and walking tours, Kingston has embraced its historic roots by finding innovative uses for many of its large warehouses and former industrial facilities. Structures which once housed the production of the country’s building blocks have been transformed into multi-use venues and unique live/work spaces for up-and-coming artists. These spaces both honor our unique history, and step boldly into the future. Welcome to Kingston! 7

STOCKADE DISTRICT

n Kingston’s Uptown neighborhood, visitors will find many fine examples of America’s early colonial history. With the first permanent settlement built in 1652, Uptown Kingston is the largest remaining example of early Dutch settlement in New York State. Uptown Kingston’s Senate House is where the first capital of New York was established in 1777. Visitors are encouraged to explore the many historic sites and museums and take in the wide range

of architecture, a chronology that spans four centuries: from the early Dutch and English, to Federalist, Georgian, Greek Revival, Victorian, Romanesque, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Art Deco and Contemporary. Uptown Kingston today is a thriving neighborhood with many shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, music venues, farmers’ markets, festivals and more.

Often referred to as “The Cathedral of Kingston,” the Old Dutch Church, a National Historic Landmark, was a part of the Dutch Colonial Village of Wiltwyck; the original church structure was built on the present site in 1660. The present church structure is the third to be sited on the same plot of land. The church maintains a museum that houses many historical records and artifacts, including a letter from George Washington. The cemetery beside the church dates to 1600’s and has 77 Revolutionary War soldiers buried there including Vice President and NY Governor George Clinton. resident Matthewis Persen (1739-1819), and owned by Ulster County since 1914, has undergone extensive restoration since emergency repairs in 1999 revealed its historical significance. A Historic Structure Report discovered that it was built in five phases from 1661 to 1922. The house has witnessed the entire history of Kingston and even pre-dates the formation of Ulster County, so by touring the house, guests learn many important aspects of our local history! In 2016, County Clerk Nina Postupack announced the opening of a new and permanent exhibit at the Persen House. The focus of the exhibit is the 1665 Inventory of the first resident of the House, Gysbert Van Imbroch. Originally written in Dutch, this primary source document was translated to English in circa 1900 and lists all of the items found in the house at the time of Mr. Van Imbroch’s death in 1665. This document provides a wonderful window into Dutch colonial life in the 17th Century. Over 1,400 items are listed including books, medical

equipment, household items, livestock, clothing and more. How many of these items are still used today? The answer might surprise you! The house is open Tuesday through Friday 9am to 4:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm from May 25, 2019 through August 31, 2019, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm from September 7, 2019 through November 23, 2019 or by appointment. Admission is free so please join us at the Persen House! Tours can be arranged by appointment as well. For further information about this and other outreach programs of the Ulster County Clerk’s Office or if you are interested in guest hosting at the House please call Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack at (845) 340-3040. The birthplace of New York State, the Ulster County Courthouse was the home to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1777. Written and adopted in the Courthouse on April 20, 1777, this Constitution became the model for our United States Constitution. It was here that our first freely elected Governor, George Clinton, took the oath of office, the first official act of New York State. The current Courthouse, built in 1818, sits on the same site as the original Courthouse erected in 1683 and is the oldest property in the United States to house a public building. Rondout Landing. The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater was launched in South Bristol, Maine on May 17, 1969. The dream began in 1964 with folksinger and activist Pete Seeger, who longed to recreate the iconic Hudson River sloop and get it sailing on the Hudson again. In this talk, Betsy Garthwaite, past President of the Board of Directors for Clearwater and a former captain, will recount the story of the construction of the sloop, from the laying of the keel in October of 1968 to her launching in May of '69. Designed by naval architect Cyrus Hamlin and brought to live by the Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol – one of the last remaining wooden boat building shipyards at that time – the replica sloop that would come to be called Clearwater was born. 7pm | Wooden Boat School Classroom | $5/person, HRMM Members FREE. Books occupies the old Kingston Academy building. Originally built in 1774 to house the private school, the 2,000-square foot space is now home to a lovely independent bookstore complete with coffee shop and wine/beer bar. Notable alumni of Kingston Academy like artist John Vanderlyn, Governor Dewitt Clinton, and future Secretary of State Edward Livingston, would likely have enjoyed browsing the extensive fiction section and sipping a latte.

he City of Kingston is proud of its storied history, represented by the many unique architecture styles and landmarked buildings, some dating back to the 17th Century. As our City grows, we are focused on the revitalization of some of Kingston’s languishing treasures to house new initiatives and exciting ventures. Many of these architectural gems have been lovingly restored through creative adaptive reuse efforts. These adaptive reuse spaces are a way for us to cherish our past and move stridently into the future.

uilt in 1903, the US Lace Curtain Mill was a major employer through much of the 20th century. In recent years, though, it had been boarded up and mostly abandoned. In 2013, the centuryold factory was bought by RUPCO, Inc, and was reconstructed into 50+ affordable apartments meant for artists in midtown Kingston. In addition to rental housing, The Lace Mill complex includes artist studios and eight gallery spaces open to the public, and has quickly become a center of

estled on the banks of the great Hudson River, the Hutton Brickyards was a major manufacturer of brick for more than 100 years — from 1865 to 1980 — sending much-needed building materials to NYC. Much of the iconic facilities’ infrastructure has since been dismantled, but a few integral elements remain, including three steel-frame kiln sheds. The kiln sheds are some of the only surviving examples of brick making architecture in the Hudson Valley, and serve as an iconic reminder of our manufacturing past.

rected in 1946, the Pilgrim Furniture Company was the first factory built in Kingston after World War II. What became the furniture company’s showroom and offices is a beautiful example of modernist factory design. In 1951, Pilgrim Furniture sold the building to the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, which used the building as a Hall of Records. Now called The Metro, the sinceabandoned structure will be preserved and renovated to house Stockade Works, a TV and film production company headed by actor/director Mary Stuart Masterson. Located in the heart of Kingston’s Midtown Arts District, the state of the art film and tech production center will breathe new life into a special space.

City of Kingston PARKS & RECREATION

Home of the region’s premier parks system

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS Forsyth Nature Center The Mission of the Forsyth Nature Center is “To foster the exploration of the natural world in and around our community through educational programming and contact with flora and fauna at an interpretive facility.” The Forsyth Nature Center has 24 animal exhibits and a dozen gardens that contain a variety of native flora found right here in the Hudson Valley. The Nature Center has been a fixture in the Kingston Community since 1936 and continues to grow and expand with the help of the community through its Friends of Forsyth Nature Center, a not for profit group and with the support of the City of Kingston Parks and Recreation Department. The Forsyth Nature Center has a variety of Native, Exotic and Domestic animal exhibits, all designed for hands on exploration for both children and adults. These include our new turtle house, birds of prey exhibits, domestic and wild birds, small and large mammal exhibits and tropicalamphibian and reptile greenhouses. Kingston Point Park The land of Kingston Point Park has a long and intriguing history. Since 1897, Kingston Point has been a “must see,” with its beautiful views of the Hudson River, Rhinecliff and the surrounding natural areas. With over 87 acres of open space, Kingston Point Park is an oasis in our urban city. At Kingston Point Beach, visitors will enjoy beach volleyball facilities, a playground, free kayak, car top and small motorized boat launch, bird watching, and a picnic pavilion. Rotary Park, within the greater Kingston Point Park complex, includes softball fields, a BMX track, nature trails, a

trolley landing, and a new dog park. It’s also a great place to cast a line! Dietz Stadium The stadium is the home field of the Kingston High School Tigers football team, as well as the district’s field hockey, track and lacrosse teams. It often hosts regional and state football playoffs. The stadium is also home to the Stockade FC, a new men’s semi-professional soccer club. The Dietz facility includes a 400-meter track and a regulation-size football field turf. Available for public use when special events are not in session. Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship The City of Kingston takes sustainability seriously. You will see composting bathroom facilities at all of our larger park complexes, new Electric Vehicle Charging Stations around the City, solar panels at the Forsyth Nature Center and an effort to make sure that the City of Kingston’s operations are as green as possible. Photo provided by Kingston Parks & Recreation

PARKS & RECREATION

Kingston’s Parks and Recreation Department operates a network of 11 neighborhood parks, three community centers, a riverfront beach, a multi-use sports stadium, a community pool, and a nature center. The indoor and outdoor facilities provide the perfect foundation for active living, with many residents and visitors enjoying kayaking and sailing on the Hudson River, sports events at Dietz Stadium, and biking, hiking, birdwatching, and more at each of the City’s unique parks.

KINGSTON’S EXPANDING RAIL TRAILS

T

he City of Kingston takes pride in its greenspaces and initiatives to promote a stronger community through healthy families and improved quality of life. One such initiative is the Kingston Greenline, a system of trails, linear parks and complete streets for pedestrians and cyclists. The Greenline serves as a hub for popular regional trails like the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and O&W Rail Trail, and the Hudson River Valley Greenway trails. It will also be part of the future Empire State Trail, which is expected to be completed by 2020. The Kingston Greenline is the nexus, connecting trail users to Ulster County’s mountains, valleys and rivers and to the City of Kingston’s growing arts and cultural scene. As the three Greenline feeders converge in Midtown, linear parks and urban rail trails will give way to complete streets, bike lanes and public plazas. Photos courtesy of Kingston Land Trust

Linear Park (Midtown to Uptown) A greenspace and pedestrian/bicycle trail, which provides access currently from Midtown at Downs Street to the Kingston Plaza in Uptown. The trail’s next phase will include increased neighborhood access, landscaping and other amenities. Kingston Point Rail Trail (Midtown to Waterfront) Beginning at East Chester St. in Midtown, this path carries travelers to the Waterfront, where it winds along the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s trolley tracks and Rondout Creek with beautiful views of the Hudson River and the Kingston Lighthouse. From the Waterfront, start at the Ravine and Abeel St. entrance of the Promenade to extend your walk. The Kingston Greenline is a joint initiative between Ulster County, Kingston Land Trust, and the City of Kingston.
