4 Ulster County PennySaver - February 24, 2017
The American College of Physicians released updated guidelines** on February 13th regarding the treatment of back pain. Essentially they are saying what we in the Alternative Health world have known all along: that modalities such as Massage, Chiropractic, and Acupuncture in conjunction with multi-disciplinary approaches like Yoga, Tai Chi, Mindfulness-based stress reduction, and cognitive-behavioral therapy have as good or better result as NSAIDs. The new guidelines call for nondrug therapies first, followed by anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) or muscle relaxants if the non drug approach fails. The guidelines strongly discourage the use of opioids. Most back pain will eventually resolve on it’s own. The use of the approaches above can help to greatly reduce the amount of time for the healing to take place and can, in fact, help the patient to come back stronger and thus less likely to be re-injured in the future. So why would massage help with back pain? One reason may be that massage has been shown in trials to affect the DNA of the muscles. In a trial at McMaster University in Canada, participants in the study exercised to exhaustion in a spin class. Muscle biopsies had been taken before the exercise. A 10 minute massage was given to 1 leg immediately after the exercise was completed. Biopsies were taken right after the massage and again 2 1/2 hrs. later. The findings are fascinating. Massage slowed the activity of proteins called cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain, while increasing the levels of proteins that help to produce more mitochondria. This cell structure helps the muscles to recover from activity and produce energy. In essence, massage had the same pain relieving effect as drugs like ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin. These NSAIDs work by reducing levels of prostaglandins which increase the level of the inflamation-producing cytokines. All this is great news for those of us who advocate for a wellness based approach to health as well as our patients. So – next time you talk to your doctor, talk to them about your non-drug options. Your body will thank you!

Friends of Historic Saugerties Presents: MOONLIGHT ON THE HUDSON: MUSIC AND MUSICIANS IN THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY HUDSON VALLEY – 2 pm at the Community Room of the Saugerties Public Library, 91 Washington Ave., Saugerties, NY. (845) 246-4317. For many of us, music is an integral part of our lives, and so it has always been. This presentation provides a brief introduction to the rich musical culture that existed in the Hudson Valley in the first half of the 19th century. Some of the topics the talk will address include: the range and nature of the music and the musicians that performed it; the means by which music was disseminated in the age before the phonograph and other forms of mechanical reproduction; and, the functions it served in the community. Ulster County Historian, Geoffrey Miller, is a retired second and sixth grade classroom teacher. During the 1980s he spent close to ten years researching the early history of music in the Hudson Valley while pursuing a doctoral degree in Musicology at New York University. Though he never completed his dissertation, he still enjoys sharing his information when the opportunity arises. In addition to his responsibilities as the Ulster County Historian, Geoff is overseeing the restoration of the Reher Bakery Building, a historic structure in the Rondout-West Strand Historic District in Kingston, NY, to house a new venue for local history and diversity education, the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History. All Friends of Historic Saugerties events are free and open to anyone who is interested in history. The talk will be cancelled if the Library is closed for inclement weather. Check with the Library or go to the Friends of Historic Saugerties FaceBook page.
