During this time, Ms. Mason Gregg was also exposed to the world famous Kirov and Bolshoi Ballet companies. Prior to returning to Texas, she continued her studies in Washington, D.C and New York City. In 1972, she founded the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with a desire to establish a professional training facility for aspiring dancers and to enrich the overall cultural atmosphere of the community. Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre (BAHBT) continues to uphold the vision of our beloved founder Lynette Mason Gregg in many ways and especially with our scholarship program. She had a strong belief that our company members needed a sense of and a love for “the big picture”. Engrossing them in a cultural trip full of history, camaraderie, and dance training at the most prestigious schools in New York City was a key in that development. Hundreds of talented dancers benefited from this life changing experience. Over the years many dedicated volunteers worked to raise the funds to make these trips possible, and we thank each of you! Today, BAHBT is proud to continue this tradition and work to keep this dream alive.

Spotlighted by Lewis Segal, critic of Los Angeles Times, who expressed “…pride of place belonged to Nelson Madrigal as the dancing Master for his brilliant turns and jumps, perfect clarity; whether on the ground or in the air and disarming modesty. A dancing master indeed." Mr. Madrigal performed with BAHBT for four seasons as guest artist until his relocation from Boston to Houston. Mr. Madrigal served for two years as BAHBT’s Ballet Master before becoming Artistic Director in August of 2015. He has enjoyed creating and staging fulllength ballets for BAHBT such as The Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella alongside Associate Artistic Director, Natalie Zundel. Mr. Madrigal has two beautiful children with wife Lorna Feijóo. Their children are the light of their lives. NATALIE CANNON ZUNDEL, ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, has strong roots with BAHBT. 2021 marks Ms. Zundel's 11th season serving on BAHBT's Artistic Staff. It has been an honor and privilege working with the dancers, artistic staff and the entire BAHBT family. Being a small part of the enrichment of the Bay Area community for the last decade has been an absolute joy! Her roots with BABHT go far beyond the last decade. She performed with the company from a young age, became one of their first full-time professional Artists in Residence and came full circle after serving for six years as BAHBT's Ballet Mistress before becoming the Associate Artistic Director in June of 2016. Ms. Zundel has over fifteen years of teaching experience in the greater Houston area, most of which were spent under the direction of friend, mentor and BAHBT’s founder, Lynette Mason Gregg. In 2001 Ms. Zundel received BAHBT’s Helen Mason Scholarship Award: a full scholarship to study in New York City. She also received scholarships and training from The Kirov Academy in Washington D.C. and American Ballet Theater in New York. While dancing with BAHBT she performed coveted roles including Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Katrina in Alan Hineline’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and her favorite role, Giselle. In 2003, she began choreographing professionally for BAHBT with a piece entitled Vienna Waltz. It was given special recognition at the Southwest Regional Dance America Festival. Ms. Zundel has enjoyed creating and staging full-length ballets for BAHBT: Dracula, Edward Scissorhands, Coppélia, The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Swan Lake, and La Sylphide. She and Artistic Director, Nelson Madrigal, have also choreographed and created two abbreviated ballets for BAHBT: Snow White and Cinderella, which were designed to bring the performing arts into area schools. She is honored to be a part of this company, organization and legacy. In addition to Ms. Zundel’s work with BAHBT, she also serves as Feijóo Ballet School’s Associate Artistic Director. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fitness and Human Performance from the University of Houston - Clear Lake. She and husband Ryan have two beautiful daughters, Madeline Renee and Penelope Anne. She would like to thank her family for their endless love and support, personally and professionally.

The Nutcracker Synopsis ACT I It is Christmas Eve at the home of the Baron and Baroness von Silberhaus – a large and grand house with the most beautiful Christmas tree imaginable. The Baron and Baroness are hosting their annual Christmas party, welcoming the arrival of their family and friends. The children are playing and dancing with anticipation of the evening’s festivities. Clara, the daughter of the hosts, is thrilled to see all her friends arrive with the adult guests. The Baron presents Clara many gifts while fritz receives a bag of coal. Clara’s favorite uncle, the mysterious toy maker, Dr. Drosselmeyer, arrives. The festivities continue as the families dance followed by Clara in a solo dance for the guests. In the midst of the festivities, the clumsy, unpredictable and slightly disreputable Aunt and Uncle of the Baroness inappropriately and loudly arrive. To quell the chaos, the Baron and Baroness invite the adults to dance, which is quickly interrupted by the children who are enjoying some fun of their own. Drosselmeyer enchants the children and entertains the guests with a presentation of his toys – the adorable gingerbread dolls and the magical harlequins and soldier dolls – who dance to the delight of all the guests. As a finale, he presents a special gift to Clara – a wooden Nutcracker in the shape of a soldier. Clara is thrilled by the toy and takes it to her heart; but a jealous Fritz snatches the Nutcracker, and in the melee, it breaks. Clara is heartbroken. Always magical, Dr. Drosselmeyer somehow repairs the broken toy with a mere handkerchief. The night wanes, the festivities lessen in tempo, and the guests depart; but Clara is reluctant to leave her Nutcracker under the tree. After the family is asleep, Clara slips back to retrieve her Nutcracker but falls asleep near the tree. Startled by the midnight chime of the grandfather clock, she awakens to a room full of life-sized rats. Again, Dr. Drosselmeyer appears and causes the room and the Christmas tree to grow. The Nutcracker comes to life just as the huge Rat King appears. The Nutcracker summons his army of soldiers to protect Clara. In the battle, just as the Rat King is about to prevail over the Nutcracker, Clara hurls her slipper at the giant rodent. Distracted, the Rat King turns his focus to Clara and cowardly flees. Clara weeps for her injured Nutcracker, but Drosselmeyer transforms him once more. This time, the Nutcracker becomes a handsome, young prince. The trio departs on a journey to the Kingdom of Snow. ACT II Clara and her Prince arrive at The Kingdom of Sweets. It is resplendent in fanciful beauty. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her colorful, loyal subjects greet Clara and her Prince. The two astound the group with the story of the Nutcracker Prince’s courageous battle against the Rat King. In celebration of the victory, the sweets present a dance spectacle: Spanish Hot Chocolate, Arabian Coffee, Chinese Tea, the Mirlitons, Russian Candy Canes, Mother Ginger and her children, and Rose with her beautiful Flowers. The highlight of the celebration is the every beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. As the Kingdom gathers for the finale, Dr. Drosselmeyer returns the Prince back into the toy Nutcracker. When Clara awakens in her own living room, she wonders: Was I awake or was it all a sweet dream? 20

Celebrating
25
Years!
Ms. Candis, thank you for 25 years with BAHBT! You are like the Swarovski crystals that adorn your costumes: stunning and brilliant. Your costume design, technical skill, and sheer talent are unmatched. Miles of fabric, thread to the moon and back, thousands of incredible, original costumes are your stock in trade. While costume design is your passion, the most precious gifts you have given BAHBT are your time, your talent, and three generations of love to the BAHBT family. “As a child, I remember many nights after a performance listening to the sound of her sewing away on the machine into the late hours of the night. It’s an honor to have worn so many of her costumes, but the best thing about her is calling her Mother.” — Natalie Zundel (BAHBT Associate Artistic Director) “Ms. Candis’ costumes not only look beautiful, but fit better than any other costume I’ve ever worn from around the world. She is the best. The atmosphere she brings to the stage elevates every single production we do. Her costumes are pieces of art that transport you to the region and time period of the production. The magic Ms. Candis creates, through her beautiful costumes, is one of the most important parts of every production we do.” — Nelson Madrigal (BAHBT Artistic Director)
"Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story." — Mason Cooley
