The transformation

Our £48.8 million redevelopment project aims to: • Build a world-class classical and contemporary music hall for the South West • Create world-class spaces for education and enterprise • Breathe new life into wonderful Victorian buildings by opening up and restoring the unique ‘Bristol Byzantine’ colonnades and 150-year-old historic façade • Enhancing the renowned acoustics working with our internationally acclaimed acousticians

• Improve backstage facilities for creative artists • Revitalise the smaller hall, known as The Lantern, into a beautiful flexible space for use as both a performance venue and conference facility • Open up the Victorian cellars as a third performance space • Create a new education centre in our historic cellars to provide a home for our education programme, which works with 40,000 young people every year

• Provide greater comfort for audiences and artists with new seating and air-conditioning

“The transformation of Colston Hall is vital for music-making in the UK. I am delighted to give the campaign my support.” Sir Simon Rattle Artistic Director, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director Designate, London Symphony Orchestra

W E L C OME Colston Hall is at the beating heart of culture and identity in Bristol. The building has been part of the Bristol skyline for 150 years and home to iconic performances by some of the world’s leading artists, including The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Yehudi Menuhin, leaving lasting memories that live on in people’s minds. Despite this, Colston Hall is the only major concert hall in the UK not to have been redeveloped in recent times. It has seen no major refurbishment for the last 60 years and, with elements of the building no longer fit for purpose, doing nothing is not an option. In 2018 we will be spearheading a major capital project to transform the Hall. The transformation will form Phase Two of Bristol’s biggest ever arts redevelopment, following on from the development of our new foyer in 2009. Building work is set to begin in June 2018 for a grand reopening in 2020.

“Become part of our CHIME Circle and help secure another 150 years of the best musical experiences.”

Louise Mitchell Chief Executive, Bristol Music Trust

So far over £30 million has been raised, thanks to the financial support of Bristol City Council, HM Treasury, Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund and some generous individual donors. However, we still need help to achieve our ambitious plans which will turn our iconic building into something that we can all be proud of as a city, region and nation. To encourage people to support the appeal, we have created CHIME, a concept which celebrates the power of music to connect and unify. A spectacular visual representation of CHIME is being created through a unique installation by metal artist, Rebecca Gouldson which will take pride of place in our foyer. Everyone who donates over £20,000 to the transformation will be invited to join our exclusive CHIME Circle. Through CHIME, we aim to raise £1 million bringing us much closer to our goal – a world-class concert hall fit for another 150 years to come.

“We are thrilled to be part of the CHIME Circle and to be so involved in the transformation project. We have enjoyed going to Colston Hall for many years and the transformation will make it a concert hall that the city can be proud of.” Helen Wilde CHIME Circle supporter and former High Sheriff of Bristol

Benefits

CHIME, a collection of texturally unique shapes, created by metal artist Rebecca Gouldson, will cascade from Colston Hall’s foyer ceiling. Rendered in a variety of metals, the installation will sway, responding to changes in temperature in the vast foyer space, while the metal shimmers in the light shining through the 100 feet of glass at the front of the building, creating abstract shadows across the interior. This impressive installation not only complements the existing copper façade of the Hall, but also encapsulates our vision of connecting people through music, embodied by our CHIME Circle. We invite you to join our CHIME Circle, as your support is crucial to the successful transformation of the Hall.

By supporting our transformation with a donation of over £20,000 (£25,000 with Gift Aid) you will join our CHIME Circle, receiving the following benefits...

Rebecca Gouldson fell in love with etching while studying metalwork and has been exploring the possibilities of capturing images on the surface of metal ever since. Influenced by both the built environment and the natural landscape, Rebecca uses etching alongside an ever growing palette of metal colouring and finishing techniques. She works with a variety of metals including copper, brass and gilding metal. Rebecca has created bespoke artworks for a range of spaces, from public museums to superyachts. Her clients include Tiffany & Co, Barclays Wealth and Legal & General and she has exhibited internationally. “It’s an incredible honour to be involved in the CHIME project given Colston Hall’s importance to the cultural life of Bristol and my close ties to the city,” Rebecca says. “The foyer space holds huge potential for creating a sculpture on an ambitious scale, which is a tremendously exciting prospect for me as an artist.”
