arts council back colston hall transformation The £45 million transformation of Colston Hall is a step closer after Arts Council England announced in January that £10 million is available for the project, bringing the total committed up to £25 million. From 2019, the main hall and The Lantern will be revitalised to improve acoustics and comfort for audiences. A new third venue will open and the transformation will also deliver state-of-the-art education facilities. Chief Executive of Bristol Music Trust Louise Mitchell said: "It's a huge vote of confidence in our plans," with Mayor George Ferguson adding that the redevelopment "will give a great boost to the rich arts and cultural mix in Bristol – creating a performance and education venue worthy of the 21st century". “Gregory Porter fans will already be well aware of the subtle power of his voice, which slips down through the ears, trickling gently into the soul like whisky and honey” (The Express). Porter released the Grammywinning Liquid Spirit in 2013, his first album on a major record label, and was praised for his “rare ability to combine the subtle intricacies of jazz with a deep, gospel-powered soulfulness” (The Telegraph).

Today’s lunchtime concert recital comes from pianist Alexander Ullman who will be playing pieces by Haydn, Ravel and Liszt. “He heard the score with immense clarity and vision, and brought it to life as if the composer were watching over his shoulder,” says the Huffington Post. *Free for 8 – 25 year olds with CAVATINA, contact box office for more information.

“The UK’s premier symphony orchestra for children” (The Independent) presents its spring concert at Colston Hall. “Anecdotally debauched” (The Herald) comedian Carey Marx delivers punchlines at a blistering rate, concerning anything from Snoop Dogg to his beloved cat. He’s “hilariously demented”, says Edinburgh Evening News. Zoe Lyons also takes to the stage for “a fireproof parade of quick-fire observational gags” (Chortle). The Scotsman calls her “a razor-sharp talent”. plus special guests

Britain’s Got Talent alumni present their self-titled debut, which is packed with all the Rat Packinspired, big band classics you’d expect from the Syco-signed quartet. Alongside their “flawless cover” (Metro) of The Doors’ Light My Fire, hear the boys reworkings of I Put a Spell on You, Mack the Knife, My Way and Stay with Me Baby.

“Black Lips defined themselves early on with riveting music that breathed new life into garage rock” (Pitchfork). The band were notorious for their on-stage antics (vomiting and nudity, mainly), and while The Guardian assures us “they’ve polished up their live act … there is still the sense that the wheels could come off this gig at any time”. Adam Ant turns his attention to his Burundi beatinfused “breakthrough classic” (Louder Than War), Kings of the Wild Frontier, promising a repackaged reissue and series of thunderous live shows. “There is simply nothing else like it,” says All Music of the album. “Nothing else has the same bravado, the same swagger, the same gleeful self-aggrandizement and sense of camp.”

“An exuberant travelogue dominated by African percussion and keyboard riffs,” says The Guardian of Owiny Sigoma Band’s album, Nyanza. The musicians travelled to Kenya to explore Luo music and, in doing so, “[reached] some of that phenomenal potential that simmered just out of reach across their two debuts” (The Quietus). Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Neil Young and Bob Dylan are just some of the artists who have recorded songs by this “septuagenarian Canadian icon” (Winnipeg Free Press) and “folk-rock legend” (Dallas Morning News). Music). For her ninth studio album, Emerald, Dar collaborated with a multitude of musicians (The Milk Carton Kids, Richard Thompson, Jim Lauderdale) to produce “a work of real depth” (The Telegraph).

A genius with the guitar, Ernest Ranglin has spent a long career crafting ska, reggae and jazz as we know them. Now, after nearly 60 years, it’s time to say farewell to the stage and his fans. Ernest will be joined for this goodbye concert by an all-star lineup including Tony Allen on drums, Soweto Kinch on sax, Cheikh Lo on vocals and percussion, Alex Wilson on piano and Ira Coleman on bass. Bristol MAN Chorus and special guests join the Gurt Lush Choir as they present their summer spectacular. The night will mark the first major formal concert of the Bristol MAN Chorus, who promise to belt out “mighty male voice classics from the valleys” alongside an “insane Georgian/ Bulgarian repertoire”.
