Spend any time around one of the beautiful rivers in the region, and you’re likely to overlook the company of South Carolina’s state amphibian, the spotted salamander. While spotted salamanders are fairly large, they can be difficult to see. You’ll enjoy a hunt through downtown Columbia trying to “spot” a friendly new ambassador, Sally Salamander, commissioned by the Leadership Columbia class of 2009. Look for her (she’s likely to turn up anywhere), and you’ll learn something new about the area and its historic and cultural sites. Stop by the Columbia Regional Visitors Center, the first stop on the tour, to pick up a brochure and map, or visit columbiasalamander.com.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden This 170-acre zoo and garden, with its two distinct parks along the scenic Saluda River, is one of the region’s most popular destinations. The zoo houses more than 2,000 animals in natural habitat environments and provides visitors with an up-close-andpersonal take on the animal kingdom. The 70-acre Riverbanks Botanical Garden is home to a broad spectrum of woodlands,
gardens and plants, as well as the Woodlands Walk, incorporating the ruins of an antebellum textile mill.

Museums
Botticelli, Monet, Tiffany and Chihuly are among the artists of more than 6,000 paintings, sculptures and artifacts showcased at the Columbia Museum of Art. Education and learning are presented with a fun twist for children of all ages at EdVenture Children’s
Museum. Take a walk through South Carolina history while learning the story of how this capital city was founded at the South Carolina State Museum. This is just a sampling of the many museums that make their home here.

Lake Murray
Just west of Columbia’s city center is Lake Murray, an 80-squaremile watery slice of heaven. With beaches, unique islands within
the Dreher Island State Recreation Area and plenty of opportunities to enjoy all types of watercraft, the lake also has sites for camping and picnicking. South carolina Gamecock sports The University of South Carolina boasts some of the South’s most loyal and determined fans, and recently they have had lots to cheer about. The South Carolina Gamecocks’ baseball team won the national title in both 2010 and 2011, and Gamecock football ended 2010 with its first SEC Eastern Division title. Catch Gamecock fever by enjoying a football game at Williams-Brice Stadium or a baseball

Congaree National Park Located a mere 30 minutes from Columbia’s city center, South Carolina’s only national park is lush with the tallest deciduous forest on the planet hugging the fertile Congaree River. A naturalist’s paradise, the park is the playground of native birds and wildlife, canoers and kayakers, and meandering

strollers along its elevated Boardwalk Trail. A self-guided tour provides background on the park’s history and diverse ecology.

The Columbia region is known for its many barbecue restaurants, and lots of folks travel from neighboring states just to enjoy a hearty meal. While pulled pork is typically the signature dish, most of the local barbecue joints offer fried chicken, savory casseroles and

This nonprofit arthouse theater presents independent, foreign and documentary films daily. The venue is also home to festivals and special programming, including the Indie Grits Festival, the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, the

City Center/Main Street Revitalized and revamped, Columbia’s Main Street combines historic structures of architectural significance with fresh retail and dining options. Anchored by the South Carolina State House on the southern end, the street is home to the beautiful Columbia Museum of Art, nightlife, galleries and specialty shops. Congaree Vista Congaree Vista, once the city’s warehouse district, is a brilliant lesson in architectural adaptive reuse. Old textile mills and railroad station structures have been restored and repurposed as a hip arts community, with inspired restaurants and inviting shops. Galleries feature works from local artists, as well as art from around the globe.
Five Points For more than 75 years, Five Points has been the heart of independent restaurants, shops, antique stores, live music and eclectic boutiques. This vibrant and colorful neighborhood – Columbia’s most bohemian – is known for outdoor dining and people watching and is especially popular with the collegiate crowd.
Devine Street Tree-lined and picturesque, Devine Street is situated in Shandon, one of Columbia’s oldest neighborhoods. Spend the day browsing this mile-long stretch of upscale boutiques for men’s, ladies’ and children’s designer clothing, footwear, art and jewelry. Make time for lunch or dinner at one of the fine-dining restaurants or casual cafés.
The area’s other unique districts, each with its own distinctive character, round out the Columbia region’s wealth of things to do, see and explore. Strictly Southern Peach cobbler is a regional favorite and can be found on many menus, including the one at Mac’s on Main. Mr. Friendly’s dishes out Moon Pies on Monday nights, and Cellar on Greene serves a unique delicacy – fried pound cake. Shrimp and grits – an iconic Low Country meal – usually highlights local Adluh grits, such as the signature version at Houston’s Low Country Grill on North Main. Legend has it the ubiquitous pimiento cheeseburger started here. Locals love the one served at Rockaways.

Local Flavor In the greater Columbia region, farm-to-table has always been a passion. Local restaurants turn out amazing, creative fare using fresh, seasonal ingredients straight from the farm. Columbia even boasts a downtown farm, City Roots, whose produce is sold to restaurants and individuals at a weekly downtown market. Restaurants such as Saluda’s and Motor Supply Company Bistro, among others, favor City Roots’ produce in their signature dishes.
Barbecue is serious business in the South, and Columbians take it more seriously than most. Finely shredded pulled pork is the standard, but sauce options range from Carolina Gold, a mustard-based sauce, to vinegar-based and ketchupbased options. You’ll find locals have their own favorites, including Doc’s, Shealy’s, Little Pigs, Palmetto Pig and Hudson’s Smokehouse. Just add some slaw, a little extra Carolina Gold, maybe a hush puppy or two, and you'll be in hog heaven.
