Just because there is a whole host of history in South Carolina dating as far back as any U.S. history book will go doesn’t mean this classic Southern city is afraid of being fresh. A trip to South Carolina’s capital means mixing the best of the city’s classics and fresh offerings. Here are 10 of each to get you started:

Classic

Scoring one-of-a-kind treasures while shopping Columbia’s antique corridor along Meeting Street.

Southern cooking, from grits to barbecued pork, dots the menus at many of Columbia’s more than 450 restaurants. It’s all delicious.

Fresh Find new designs and high fashion in the many boutiques on Divine Street. Or, window shop then grab a bite or a cocktail at one of the nearby restaurants.

Classic Catching a University of South Carolina football game at Williams-Brice Stadium. With trimmed hedges in the end zone, tens of thousands of fans at each game and a lively, Southern-style tailgating scene, catching a Gamecocks game is as quintessential as it gets.

Fresh Winners of the national championship at the 2010 College World Series, the Gamecocks baseball team games will be one of the hottest tickets in town come the 2011 season.

Fresh The new South Carolina State Farmers Market (see pg. 51) has tripled in size, and it now features a farmers market, conference center, specialty shops and more. Feast your eyes on the produce at the The Farmer’s Shed (see pg. 50), located in nearby Lexington, which also boasts a great selection of fresh produce and an eight-acre corn maze each fall.

Classic It’s warm pretty much year-round in Columbia, which makes golf (see pg. 60) a part of the city’s culture rather than a mere game or hobby. There are dozens of courses in and around the city offering some of the best golfing in the world.

Fresh Even a novice can pick up disc golf in a matter of minutes. Columbia Disc Golf is a great resource to discover the more than half-dozen courses nearby. Or, just find a park with some trees to serve as holes.

Classic The South Carolina State House (pg. 52) is a historic building that has a Civil War era past. Inside its storied halls are notable monuments and an art gallery filled with portraits of famed historical figures such as Robert E. Lee, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Fresh The historic Union Station, built in 1902, is now home to a thriving restaurant, California Dreaming, which has helped to revitalize the neighborhood around it.

Classic Columbia’s college-town status means finding a cozy independent coffee shop or bookstore is an easy task. Spend some time at places such as Higher Grounds Books & Beans to caffeinate with a book and feel as energized as a college kid.

Fresh Have Mother Nature chip in on the relaxation front with gentle kayak or canoe trip down the Congaree River (see pg. 15).

Classic Explore the talents of international artists from ancient Rome and Greece as well as American masters at the Columbia Museum of Art (see pg. 53).

Fresh Classic Riverbanks Zoo and Garden (see pg. 55) is a two-time winner of the Governor’s Cup for the state’s most outstanding tourist attraction. With a 170-acre botanical garden and an incredible selection of the world’s wildlife, it’s easy to see why.

Fresh Take an evening cruise with the Southern Patriot or the Spirit of Lake Murray (see pg. 60) for a chance to see some of the lake’s many waterfowl.

Classic Boiled peanuts are a tasty and common snack in the South, and Columbia has plenty of great options for this treat. Enough of them, actually, that local publications have a best boiled peanut category in their annual “best of” surveys.

Fresh More and more Columbia restaurants are getting on the slow-food and farm-to-table wagon that is bringing fresh produce and local products to menus all over the country. With the city’s bounty from nearby farms and producers, this is one of the best places to taste the trend.

Relax at one of Columbia’s fantastic spas (see pg. 54) that offer an out-of-this world Zen-like experience. There’s nothing better than a little pampering on vacation.

Classic The Nickelodeon Theater’s (see pg. 22) quaint Main Street digs conjure images of movie houses of yesteryear. This nonprofit theater, often called “The Nick,” has been screening some of the most interesting and diverse independent films in its 75-seat setting since 1979.

Fresh The Nick’s new home will be a state-of-the-art cultural facility just a few blocks down Main Street from the original, with two screens and some of the best film technology available. (Salamander at First Citizens Complex, 1230 Main St.) At the corner of Main and Gervais, Sally notices the home of democracy at the State House located in the heart of Columbia, the Palmetto State’s capital. It is a historic building with a storied past of war, struggle and accomplishment. The grounds are home to more than 24 monuments. Can you ﬁnd all six bronze stars?

ARCADE MALL • 1332 main st. Built in 1912, the arcade was Columbia’s ﬁrst indoor mall. The architecture features terra cotta and marble details. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 17, 1982.

Palmetto Building • 1400 MAIN ST. You are now standing next to a building that’s nearly 100 years old. The Palmetto Building was built in 1913 and featured a bank on the ﬁrst level. Notice the architecture of the building. Take a walk inside and feel the different stones. Can you tell what they are?

never Bust By BLUE SKY • 1500 MAIN ST. Look up and discover a unique piece of work created by Columbia’s own famous artist, Blue Sky. His inspiration came when the wall between the two buildings was torn down. Blue Sky didn’t want Sylvan’s to “ﬂoat away” from the rest of the block, so he chained it down.

OF ART • 1515 MAIN ST. Columbia’s world-class museum features fantastic art inside and out. Now that you’ve found me, visit the Museum Shop then walk around Boyd Plaza and notice the Keenan Fountain and Apollo’s Cascade with its many waterfalls, Henry Moore’s “Upright Motive No. 8,” and the large steel and ﬁberglass sculpture “Homage to Abbot Suger.”

riCHland County PUBLIC LIBRARY • 1431 assemBly st. Look inside the 242,000-square-foot building at the corner of Assembly and Hampton streets. Notice the contemporary architecture and more than 20 pieces of original artwork. Downstairs, children go wild over the thousands of

books, puppet stage, listening center and puzzles. Characters from Where the Wild Things Are greet you as you enter the Children’s Room. Do you know the author of the book?

THE BIG APPLE • 1000 HamPton st. Feel like dancing? You’re standing in front of the Big Apple Club. In the late 1930s, Columbia’s young African-American teens would come here to dance the night away. This is where the Big Apple dance craze was born — not New York City.

BLUE MARLIN • 1200 linColn st. What is now a premier location for dining and entertainment used to be the center of growth and development of Columbia. You are now standing in what used

to be Columbia’s train station. Yep, what once stood as the Seaboard Diner is now the Blue Marlin. Our city has done a great job of preserving history while looking toward the future.

adluH Flour MILLS • 804 GERVAIS ST. You’re standing next to an icon in Columbia’s Vista district. Adluh Flour Company, built in 1900, is the only ﬂour mill still operating in South Carolina. You can ﬁnd some of their stonemilled grits as part of the main course in some of our local restaurants. Did you know their biggest customer is Domino’s Pizza?

Bank on This: Rolling rivers The swiftly flowing waters of the Broad, Saluda and Congaree rivers congregate in Columbia. Along their banks lie riverfront parks, walks and gardens that beckon both visitors and locals chasing the warm afternoon breezes to the water’s edge. Near the water’s edge, you’ll find a handful of outfitters providing kayaks, canoes and inner tubes for rides down the river system, so don’t worry about having to travel far to enjoy a ride atop the water’s flow. Saluda Shoals Park, near the Lake Murray dam’s spillway, is one of the most popular put-in points. If you’d prefer a guided trip, a number of outfitters are happy to oblige and will help you hop aboard a raft with an expert at the oar.

Anglers who chance to cast in a line along the water’s banks often find themselves in a fight with a striped or black bass. Each river has its popular fishing grounds, and while locals won’t divulge each and every fishable eddy, they are in

agreement that an easily accessed and near-sure bet for catching fish is Senate St. Landing, near the Gervais St. Bridge on the Congaree River. Nearby, several marinas and fishing outfitters rent fishing equipment — visit columbiacvb.com for specifics.

Three Rivers Greenway is easily accessed along an expansive stretch of the city’s riverbanks. Abutting the perpetually flowing waters of both the Broad and Congaree rivers, this peaceful walk connects a handful of welcoming city parks. Among the most popular is Riverfront Park, near the threeriver confluence. It’s a sprawling grassy area where picnickers and people looking to dip their toes in the water congregate to enjoy the area’s inviting natural attributes. Kayak and canoe rentals are available nearby, and it’s common to see water enthusiasts conquering a small rapid or two.

The half-mile segment alongside Granby Park’s 24 acres was the genesis of Columbia’s riverwalk system in 1998. Hike south along the greenway among trees whose boughs create a leafy canopy over the paved walkway on the Cayce side of the Riverwalk. Plenty of overlooks create optimum conditions for snapping scrapbookworthy pictures of the Congaree River and its greenery. The greenway, which is composed of a interweaving of riverwalks, is suitable for all athletic abilities. Add to the experience by renting a bike, strapping on inline skates or hopping on a moped in order to zip around Columbia’s citydefining waterways. At the end of the day, consider a respite at any of the nearby restaurants to take in the sunset colors as they reflect atop the never-ceasing river water. Lazy days on lake murray

Spread like the fingers of a snowflake, Lake Murray’s innumerable coves and inlets allow for both quiet solitude and family enjoyment. Found just west of the Columbia city center, the lakeshore encompasses nearly 80 square miles. Lakeside rental homes, multiple marinas and easily accessed boat launches sit perched on its warm-water shores. Water, Water Everywhere. While the majority of Murray’s shoreline is rocky, a few prime beaches do exist if you know where to look. One of the lake’s most popular is Sandy Beach. Found in the southeast section of the lake — a few miles from the earthen Saluda Dam — this white-sand oasis is ideal for barbecues, swimming and soaking up the sun. If you’ve rented a boat at one of the lake’s fullservice marinas, you can beach it right on shore and save yourself the hassle of anchoring.

Islands in the Sun. In addition to sandy beaches, secluded coves and inviting inlets, Lake Murray also features a peppering of tiny islands. Among

the most interesting is Goat Island. Oddly enough, goats do meander around this particular island, perfect for a quirky photo opportunity. The Dreher Island State Recreation Area is composed of three islands in Lake Murray, each linked via bridge. This park system is ideal for those who want to enjoy the lake sans watercraft. Camping, hiking, fishing and picnic sites are all available.

And on select occasions, including the Fourth of July, the lake hosts floating concerts. The lake itself is a self-contained tourist attraction. Shore-side vacation rentals provide easy and anytime access to Murray’s banks, while restaurants overlook its placid waters. In the summer months, the Southern Patriot and the Spirit of Lake Murray offer daytime and evening cruises that feature

Congaree’sCanopy If you were a dragon, fairy or gentle giant, Congaree National Park would most certainly be on your short list of desired places to live. Even those of us who are less mythical find South Carolina’s only national park and its 2.5-mile boardwalk, towering trees and the Congaree River running through it make a magical playground.

Just 30 minutes southeast of Columbia’s city center, Congaree National Park is the tallest deciduous forest on the planet and is home to several champion trees, the largest of their kind. The area is inundated with floodwaters eight–10 times per year when the river overflows its banks, typically between December and April. This frequent reinvention helps to make the park appealing to an incredibly broad array of wildlife. If you only have an afternoon to spend, a great introduction to all the wonders of the park is to walk

the elevated Boardwalk Trail using the free brochure you can pick up at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. This self-guided tour gives you some of the history and ecology of the park. For birders, canoeists and kayakers there is an enormous amount of diversity to keep you enthralled for much longer. And it’s free to everyone! To start planning your trip, visit www.nps.gov/cong. BBQ SOME LIKE IT HOT

When in the South, you must eat a Southern meal: mouthwatering, taste-bud-tackling, cooked-to-perfection barbecue. Columbia offers plenty of spots where you can indulge in this age-old gastronomical tradition — an experience you’ll remember forever. Before you go any further, follow this step-by-step guide to full-stomach satisfaction.

Step 1: Start your Engines

Come hungry. You want the whole experience, so bring as much belly room as you can. Don’t be shy. We’ll make you feel right at home. Take a seat and get ready for an indoor picnic extravaganza. Rev up and step up with your paper plate and your appetite. Maybe stretch a bit, just to be safe.

Step 2:

Load Up Take a gander at the buffet or the menu and don’t feel too overwhelmed. Whatever you pick, you can’t go wrong. The main event here is the barbecue. No, not the coal cooking hood in your yard used for grilling hamburgers, we mean the meat itself, and we mean business. In South Carolina, it’s slow-cooked pulled pork, and you can usually get it in a sandwich

or a basket. In some places, hash, chicken and ribs grace the menu, as well.

Step 3:

Get Saucy and Choose Sides This is where it gets interesting. Spicy, tangy or sweet, every barbecue joint has its own recipe for success. In the Midlands area around Columbia, a lot of restaurants use a mustard-based sauce known as Carolina Gold. Now, it isn’t a meal without a little accompaniment. Dress up your plate with beans, potato salad, coleslaw or hush puppies. There are plenty of places to enjoy brunch throughout the city, and the creations that local chefs are providing for the Sunday crowd are simply standouts on any menu. Here are four great brunches in Columbia worth sleeping in for: motor suPPly

Biscuits taste better when they are made from scratch. So do grits, quiches and just about any other breakfast food. This is why the Motor has thrived as a bistro for more than 20 years — and its brunch is a true highlight in the Congaree Vista. The brunch menu, offered Sundays from 11am–3pm, changes weekly. Expect biscuits and grits, piping-hot pastry baskets and great entrees that favor the “unch” part of brunch, such as cornmeal-battered fried tilapia.

Diprato’s wants to make sure you don’t miss brunch this weekend (or any weekend for that matter). So, it offers it on both Saturday and Sunday for those who love the classic sweet-and-savory offerings produced by staff boasting New York accents befitting a classic deli. The griddle cooks up pancakes nonstop — buttermilk, banana pecan, chocolate chip, blueberry and peaches and cream. The rest of the menu runs the gamut from omelets to a delectable Monte Cristo French toast sandwich. Or, just order a steak — N.Y. strip, of course. On a pleasant day, grab a table on the patio and leisurely go about the weekend in style.

Cotton grill The goal of Sunday brunch at the Cotton Grill is to make sure that an empty stomach doesn’t spoil your day of rest. Wednesday night is twice the fun at the Nick — you have the chance to see back-to-back screenings of two different films! At 6pm, the final screening of the previous week’s film runs, and at 8:30pm, the premiere of the new film running the following week helps pack the 77-seat theater. Along with munchies from local restaurants, the Nick’s non-trans fat popcorn, soda and spirits are available very reasonably.

In the spirit of creating exhibition opportunities for works that might not get show time at other festivals, the Indie GRITS Film Festival is dedicated to bringing people together to celebrate and share their interest in independent film production. Documentaries and acclaimed films created by and about Jewish culture are celebrated at this festival in March/April 2011.

Second Saturdays at the Nick Second Saturdays, a family program to champion the shared viewing, conversation and experience of films among youth and adults, is held the second Saturday of every month at 10am. Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers As a venue for the Southern Circuit, the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers, the Nick offers a forum for film lovers to discuss films and their meanings with the filmmakers six times a year. In a few short years, the museum has become a must-see destination for children. After all, if it’s fun enough for Eddie — officially the world’s largest child at 40 feet and 17.5 tons — it’ll be entertaining enough for your kids, who will inevitably revel in the interactivity of the museum’s exhibits. They’ll have the opportunity to learn by

experience through hands-on activities: measuring their own oxygen levels, anchoring their own TV shows, recording their own music and much more. Learning has never been so cool. For the outdoor equivalent, visit Riverbanks Zoo and Garden (803.779.8717, www.riverbanks.org), consistently voted as one of the best in the country. More than 2,000 animals give children the age-old opportunity to marvel at 20-foot giraffes, playful penguins and the slow-moving Galapagos tortoise. But the zoo isn’t just a place to watch from a distance. Kids can get up close and personal with mystery animal hunts, diving expeditions, safaris and even overnight camps. So fret not, Columbia is officially kid tested and mother approved, and the children have permission to let their adventurous spirits run wild and get their hands a little dirty. as the House of Peace synagogue around 1907, the building was located originally at 1318 Park St. After its congregation outgrew the building, the structure was sold with the stipulation that it never be used as a synagogue again. In 1936, the building indeed took on a far different use, as it became an African-American dance hall called the Big Apple Club. It was there that the Big Apple dance craze was born before it became a national phenomenon.
